the Esplanade. I was so chuffed to be taking this journey with such a sensational pair, and was even more excited to join in the celebrations with them at the end of our day.
From the PUBLISHER
Dreams of running down the finisher's chute started playing out in my head. There was cheering. And streamers. Lots of streamers. I was front and centre, amidst the adulating support of the crowd, the wistful looks of pride as I passed my friends, and the adoring looks of my well-behaved, attentive kids, who were not being a nuisance at all, had not broken anything all day, and was not causing my husband to do the clenched-teeth shouting/whispering instructions that they have become accustomed to. I had embraced the 5am riding sessions. There is a pure beauty about that time of the morning. As the wind whips past your ears, and the white noise of rubber on roads overtakes your senses. The purpose-filled isolation is addictive and I was a junkie.
It’s Ironman time. Can you feel it? It’s such an exciting time of year with multitude of fit and focussed folk, inspiring us to jump off the couch, and step out of our comfort zones. This certainly happened to me. I was bitten by the triathlon bug after last year's event, and I decided that I was up for it. I had given it a crack in 2016, but was determined to do even better in 2018. Even numbers are my thing. So I gathered my posse - a duo of wonder women to do the swim and the run legs, which would straddle my 90km slog from Palm Cove to Port Douglas, and back to
That mental filmclip, however, came to a screeching halt a couple of weeks ago, when the cheering support of the crowd was in fact my training buddy saying “Can you wiggle your toes?” And the looks coming from my kids faces were not looks of adulation, but rather that of terror, as they wondered why the person with the bloodied face and missing front teeth was in their house. You see, I came off my pushy. Quite unceremoniously too, from the onlookers accounts. Not that I think it is possible to come off a pushbike gracefully. But if it is possible, I certainly didn’t on that dark and
frosty pre-dawn morning. In fact, I believe that no situation where your face makes first contact can ever end well. In the book entitled “Parts of Your Body that should Endure the First Point of Impact”, I note that Faces do not make an appearance. Especially not when said first point of impact is Collins Avenue. A big shout out to the lycra-clad “proper” cyclists who, although unknown to me, formed a barrier around me as I was scraped off Collins Avenue, and to the awesome Ambo’s who gave me that powerfully magic whistle, and looked bemused as shock set in and I started talking about a plethora of topics, non of which were related to the topic prior. And of course, thanks to my substitute, who injects a shot of testosterone into my former all-girl team, and who has already proved to be more dedicated and skilled on two wheels than I ever was. The fabulous cycling community, including this issue's gorgeous cover girl, Lena Zaltash, have told me to get back on the bike. And maybe one day I will. But this year, I’m content to be a spectator and the biggest supporter of the 3000+ entrants. To all entering this year, please know that I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines, looking on in awe at your sheer stamina and guts. Each and every one of you is truly awesome and you should be so proud of yourselves! Bring on June 10th!

THE IRONMAN ISSUE According to our cover model, Lean Zaltash, she is “fierce, not cute.” And given that she’s competing in her third Ironman this month, we tend to agree! Lena first learned about the event through a mis-timed drive on a Sunday in June in 2012, Lena was left in total awe of the athletic machines running from Yorkeys Knob to the city. She stopped making excuses, and had a go! “The Cairns triathlon community welcomed me in, widened my social circle and opened my eyes to the huge generosity of spirit and knowledge we are lucky to have in this gorgeous spot we call home.” Lena has collected finisher medals, and tons of beautiful gear in her five-year journey in this sport; recently racing the Australian Alpine Ascent in Kosciusko. "The scenery was breathtaking but nothing beats the view on our bike leg between Palm Cove and Port Douglas!"

Don’t Poke THE TIGER WARNER’S CORNER DAVE WARNER
Star 102.7
‘In war, there are no winners.’ This phrase was once said by someone who clearly didn’t dig in during the great Beer War of 2015 to take advantage of the gruelling trench type conflict between breweries that sent the price of Corona into a flat spin before crashing to an affordable level for the average punter.
around by the neck like Siegfried’s mate Roy did in Vegas, but it still stung. It was a tiger with wings and it was my own fault, but the strike punctured my back pocket and my wallet haemorrhaged. Once bitten, twice shy.
We missed check in at Cairns Airport by two minutes. It was my old And a concurrent I STILL LIKE TO man’s 75th birthday conflict was taking GET HIGH, BUT celebrations on Phillip place in the sky with THESE DAYS I’M Island in Victoria, one the air wars, a dogfight TWITCHY of those family that followed the occasions you just can’t blitzkrieg model of miss, and if we went on surprise, speed and the next available Tiger flight superior firepower. Flash sales we would miss it by five days. that could get you anywhere, anytime, for less than your lunch money. So we bought the last four seats to Winners everywhere, if you can just get Melbourne that day on another airline to the airport on time… for $1000 each one-way. Ouch. Winning.
Did I ever tell you about the time I got bitten by a tiger? I didn’t get dragged
I don’t blame the tiger, I was playing in his jungle and I was ill-prepared.
I still like to get high, but these days I’m twitchy before I fly. I now insist we get to the airport a good day and a half before our pilot. So the air war changed the ‘skyscape’ and the rules of engagement shifted with cheaper prices, and the booking system is like buying a pizza starting with the base then racking up your toppings - like seat selection, leg room, baggage allowance, you check yourself in and carry your boarding pass in your phone. But not everything has changed. The seat kicking kid behind you; the personal space invader beside you; and the ‘we haven’t even left the terminal yet’ seat recliner in front of you. They are all still present, And when we land, you’re not going to shave much time off your disembarkation PB by standing up first when the seat belt sign goes off. So cool your jets people and happy travels.

Brunch about TOWN Brother Jenkins – Ask a Cairns local where their #1 brekkie spot in Cairns is and many will answer with Brother Jenkins. The brother and sister team breathed life back into this old corner store and turned it into one of Cairns’ most cherished cafes. Widely voted by my trusty Foodvixen followers as the BEST Eggs Benedict in town buuuuut it’s their Breakfast Salad that gets me (almost) every time. Mama Coco – Anyone who knows me knows I’m a big fan of dining at Mama Coco. When I first started Foodvixen back in 2011 it was one of the very first places I blogged about. With their regularly changing menu, Davy and his team are always adding new and exciting ‘on trend’ breakfast (and lunch) dishes. My fave dish of the moment is the appropriately named ‘Your House Deposit’ which puts a slight spin on the very popular Smashed Avo adding Cherry Tomatoes, Chilli, Rocket, Ricotta and a touch of Chilli for good measure. Caffiend - Their brekkie menu has been on repeat for the last few years but there are so many dishes that are favourites with the locals God forbid they ever change it. Me personally, I’m a sucker for their Salmon Brekky with Smoked Salmon, Smashed Avo Toast, Poached Eggs, Beetroot Relish, Horseradish Cream and Pickled Cucumber Slaw. You can thank me later. Waffle On – Before I visited Waffle On I had actually never had a savoury waffle. Yeah I know what has the world come to? Turns out they are pretty darn tasty. My personal pick is the Goats Cheese with Smashed Avocado, Blueberry Coulis, and Honey or the Salmon Beets with Smoked Salmon and Shredded Beetroot on Smashed Avo Creme Fraiche. Did I mention they also have some killer sweet waffles? Can I get a hell yeah? Smith Street Cafe – Mum’s in activewear, MAMIL’s (middle-aged men wearing lycra) post-bike ride, and Taipan’s basketball players are all regular sights at this popular Cairns brekkie haunt. What started out as a tiny coffee shop four years ago has now doubled in size and introduced a scrumptious menu complete with an adult version of Coco Pops. For the prettiest smoothie bowls and (arguably) the best coffee in town check out the Smith Street Cafe. Sing Sing Espresso – Tucked down an alleyway on Lake Street, Sing Sing might only have a few smaller items on their breakfast menu but what the menu lacks in size it more than makes up for in deliciousness. If the very popular Avocado and Edamame on Sourdough with Lime and Chilli isn’t your thing might I also recommend the Raisin, Orange, Fennel and Macadamia Sourdough Toast with Marscapone and Coconut Nectar. Oh and while you’re there make sure you put in a take-home order for a loaf of what might just be the best sourdough of your life. Follow Foodvixen on Facebook and Instagram for Cairns cafe and restaurant reviews and foodie news.
Suburb Spotlight EDGE HILL SARAH MORT
What’s not to love about Edge Hill? Since I moved to the Collins Avenue today is one of the key places I like to show Tropical North some 13 years ago and took my first drive my overseas and interstate friends. I think I love it as an through the inner suburbs of Cairns, I could tell urban planner. It makes me smile to think by a country mile that Edge Hill had something planners, landscape architects and engineers very special about it. I could see that it would can actually collaborate to make something actually be pretty hard for it to fail in with purpose (a road) linking to a place to A LITTLE regards to best long-term property live (a suburb) so stunningly beautiful. A TROPICAL OASIS potential given that it was blessed with one little tropical oasis smack bang in the SMACK BANG IN of the town’s best assets with the Botanic inner city. THE INNER CITY Gardens on its doorsteps. As the Far North is not my natural habitat, I recall when Collins Avenue seemed to be being raised in the large metropolis cities of closed for an age and thought what a brave Melbourne and Sydney, I love finding bold step by the Cairns Regional Council to close something unique and special in the inner urban the main drag into Edge Hill... But then again how precincts of Cairns. My core loves are the wide streets, visionary and ambitious. and extra wide green nature strips lined by the classic

high set timber Queenslander homes, and an abundance of palms and tropical plantation. You can see a lot of this in the inner parts of Cairns but one of the best examples is in the streets of Edge Hill. I know all the other cool things we love about Edge Hill such as the great cafes, bars, and food shops but for me, its most unique point of difference is its inner-urban tropical landscape streetscape, the Cairns Botanic Gardens, and classic Queenslander style homes.

MUSIC KEESHA MCLEAN Usually I write about ‘What’s On’ over the next few months, however, I thought I’d write about the fabulous live music scene we have recently experienced. FESTIVAL 2018 Cairns Esplanade was ‘a blaze’ with live music for 12 days during April for Festival 2018, celebrating The Commonwealth Games. I have never seen Cairns so vibrant and alive. It was truly special. Cairns Cultural Services Artistic Director, Roz Pappalardo did a superb job in producing a brilliant programme, showcasing many of Cairns live music and emerging artist acts including youth artists Maggie Helena, Legends Of Perhaps, award winning favourites Leanne Tennant, Greta Stanley, as well as Handles, Melanfunk Collective, The Montgomery Brothers, The Taste, Los Caracoles, Twelve Ballet to name a few, performing and supporting national award winning artists Busby Marou, Kate-Miller Heidke, Amy Shark and The Cat Empire. Festival 2018 really did celebrate our diverse live music talent, something I do hope Cairns Regional Council replicates annually. The closure of The Esplanade was a bonus too!
QMUSIC AWARDS 2018 Cairns artists where in force at the QMusic awards held May 14th, celebrating the cream of Queensland’s music talent. Cairns artists, Legends Of Perhaps, Greta Stanley, Mayah and Tanks Arts Centre were honoured to be chosen as finalists in their category. Celebrations all round for 23 yr old songwriter Greta Stanley who was awarded The Billy Thorpe $10k Scholarship towards recording her new album. A fabulous achievement and well deserved. Legends Of Perhaps were finalists in the ‘Schools’ Category, Mayah in ‘R&B/Hip Hop’ and Tanks Arts Centre for ‘Regional Venue Of The Year’. Wonderful recognition for Cairns and FNQ! Leanne Tennant who is twice QMusic award winner, is 2018 recipient of QMusic Carol Lloyd $15k Scholarship for a female emerging songwriter. This prestigious fellowship scholarship will enable Leanne to produce and record her next album. Exciting times ahead for Leanne and all Cairns emerging artists. Breakfast : Tracey Spicer AM and the #MeToo Movement Cairns Tropical Writers Festival will host a breakfast with award-winning author, journalist and broadcaster Tracey Spicer AM as a satellite event at The Hilton in Cairns on Monday 23 July 2018.
appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia, "for significant service to the broadcast media as a journalist and television presenter, and as an ambassador for social welfare and charitable groups".
Well known as a national anchor newsreader with the Ten Network for 14 years, Tracey was sacked by email aged 39 in 2006 while on maternity leave. With speculation she was fired due to her age, she hired a lawyer, her ground-breaking fight about discrimination in the workplace making national news.
Describing herself as ‘the bogun from Brisbane’, last year she published her no-holds-barred “femoir”, The Good Girl Stripped Bare. In the book, Spicer is her usual defiant and outspoken self, given to hilarious public confessions as she nails the structural barriers facing women in the workplace. She encourages us all to “shake off the shackles of being the good girl”.
Always a powerful advocate for women’s rights, social justice and equal opportunity, Spicer is co-founder and national convener of Women in Media that surveyed 1000 female journalists in 2017. It found almost 100% were relegated to low-paid, low-profile, low-power roles, with almost half experiencing intimidation, abuse or sexual harassment in the workplace. Spicer has produced and presented documentaries in Bangladesh, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, and India, and is an ambassador for World Vision, World Wildlife Fund for Nature, the Penguin Foundation, Dying with Dignity, Autism Spectrum Australia, QUT’s Learning Potential Fund, ActionAid anti-poverty and global human rights agency, Domestic Violence NSW, and Karitane Parenting Services. She is Patron of the NSW Cancer Council, the newborn care unit at the Royal Hospital for Women, Life's Little Treasures Foundation and the National Premmie Foundation, and the face of the Garvan Institute’s research into pancreatic cancer, which claimed her mother. Spanning television, radio, newspapers, magazines and online, Spicer now runs two companies as a freelance writer, speaker, media trainer and broadcaster, Spicer Communications and Outspoken Women. Her TEDx talk has had 5 million views. Check it out on YouTube. Watch her take her make-up, high heels and other prescribed ‘armour’ off, and suddenly be more real and effective, and trusted. Her advocacy has also seen her nominated for a Walkley Award, and in 2018 she was
In the wake of the scandals in the entertainment industry in Hollywood and elsewhere, Tracey has become the face of the #MeToo movement in Australia to break the silence. More than 1600 women across industries and backgrounds have contacted her with their stories involving over 100 men, 40 of them household names. Working with the police to bring them to court, Spicer has just launched Now Australia together with Tina Arena, Deborah Mailman, Sacha Horler, Clare Bowditch, Missy Higgins and a host of other women in entertainment to bring about permanent change. Equivalent of the Time’s Up movement in the US, this is a service to support both men and women who have been sexually harassed, assaulted or intimidated in workplaces, putting them in touch with counsellors and lawyers. Early Bird Weekend Passes Women in Media FNQ, and the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance have supported Tracey’s visit to Cairns. Tickets to the 23 July breakfast with Tracey Spicer AM, and Early Bird Weekend Passes to the Cairns Tropical Writers Festival on 10-12 August, are both available at www.cairnstropicalwritersfestival.com
What’s on IN CAIRNS THE ARTS HAYLEY GILLESPIE TROPICAL STEAMPUNK Join forces with some of Cairns most prominent artists colliding together their creative energies to produce the most fun and unique atmosphere and works of art! April 16, 2018, local artist Caroline Mudge and event coordinator Rebecca Scott are collaborating again to create Coco Loco 2 – Steampunk Edition to be held on June 16th 2018 at the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron. They have timed the launch of this celebration to coincide with the United Nations World Creativity and Innovation Week (April 16 – 21). This second Coco Loco is the follow up to the 2016 Tiki-themed Coco Loco that saw over 900 predominantly local art enthusiasts dressed up to celebrate the creative, free and fun lifestyle that tropical Cairns represents. The art show format will be the same for 2018 – with participating artists being given the theme of ‘Tropical Steampunk’ to guide their creations. The evening will run from 7pm to 3am with attendees being encouraged to dress up in the Steampunk theme. There will also be several costume making workshops run in the lead up to the event.
So Uber in and soak up the scene, this is a wonderful opportunity to start or add to your art collection! Oh and you’ll get to meet the artists! CAIRNS ART GALLERY ‘The Elephant who was a Rhinoceros’. An enchanting, beautiful Lecture performance told as many stories have been passed through the history of time, person to person. This performance revolves around the role the animal plays in human language as a name for that speechlessness from which speech once took off. A creature that does not speak; a creature you cannot speak of. The work traces the footprints of this impossible figure as it appears every time the human is measured against the animal as mute and unspeakable. It is the elephant in every room. It is a white bear, whose silhouette looms larger with every effort to keep it out of your mind. Saturday, 23rd June 2:00pm 3:00pm. Free entry, bookings essential. TANKS ARTS CENTRE Botanica Exhibition is on from Friday 1st June to Thursday 4th July. Featuring work created by JCU Creative Media Students, this exhibition showcases the living wonderland that exists within the gardens. Treat yourself to this world of re-imagined botanicals, illustrations, video games, sculptures and film. Experience the unexpected.

people AT HOME WITH ... LIZ BLATCHFORD AT WORK WITH ... HEMANT AND EVONNE DAYA
At Home With.. LIZ BLATCHFORD Born in the United Kingdom, Liz Blatchford spent most of her childhood in Australia and, as a dual citizen, has represented both countries in her professional triathlon career. “I did my first triathlon at the age of 14. I went to university and studied marine biology for a couple of years, but I ended up leaving my studies when I was 20 to race full time as a professional, and I haven’t looked back” Liz is on the Ironman comeback trail after giving birth to her daughter Mahli. She is loving her life as a new mum but she admits that the road back to fitness has been tough, balancing her new role as a parent and the demands of a professional athlete. "During the pregnancy, I embraced things such as pilates to keep me stretched and balanced and worked that all-important pelvic floor. Mahli came into the world via c-section, following that, I was told no exercising for 6 weeks, it was the hardest 6 weeks of my life. I gradually developed a passion for walking” Liz's first race back after having Mahli was the Noosa Triathlon in November 2017 "It was so nice to be out on the course and I placed 7th, I was super happy with that place having had nearly 18 months not competing." "With the help of Kris from Strength For Endurance on the Gold Coast, we developed a training program I could do at home with a kettlebell ( which I could swap for Mahli when she was grumpy ) some bands and a TRX suspension trainer." No-one knows more about winning, racing and relaxing in Cairns than Liz, who dominated the Cairns Ironman in
2013/14/15, and, although not completing this year, she is looking forward to sharing her passion for the event and Tropical North Queensland with everyone. “The course is so stunning. I like warm conditions and in Cairns, you are always guaranteed nice balmy conditions. The coast road up to Port Douglas is so beautiful and as much as you are racing, it is hard not to find yourself looking around in awe. It is amazing that these roads are closed for us to race on in a World Heritage listed area. The run is one of the best I have done and with the crowds on the finish chute and down the Esplanade, it is as good as running Ali’i Drive in Kona. And race morning in Palm Cove is another special moment. Standing on the beach and looking around at how beautiful it is, is truly inspirational. Ironman Cairns just has everything.” Liz said the Asia-Pacific Championships status of the Cairns Ironman event is a bonus that adds a number of other dimensions. “It has the extra points, it draws a stronger field and it has more kudos, so it brings a whole lot of extra factors into play. You don’t get much better than Javier Gomez and Mirinda Carfrae and it is very exciting to see that Javier is coming to Cairns. He has proven that he is amazing over the 70.3 and we know his credentials over the standard distance racing. It is always exciting to see someone of his calibre take on their first Ironman. Everyone knows Rinny and she is a true champion" "I’m super excited to be racing in the Ironman Philippines in just a few weeks, following that, Mahli, Glenn and I are excited to arrive back in Cairns and share in all the fun and excitement of this incredible event”

Don’t Be So Quick To TURN YOUR BACK WORDS: NICK CARLING
A few weeks ago I embarked on a journey to send a powerful statement to a guy who has been chewed up by society and spat out. Let’s call this guy Pete. In his darkest hour, Pete decided that the stress of life wasn’t worth it. Hospitalisation followed his battle with depression, and thankfully, his attempts at suicide were unsuccessful. Sure, Pete’s woes were not entirely society’s fault. There’s no doubt he could have made some better decisions over the course of his life. But he is human, and as all humans do, he has made his fair share of mistakes. It's our failures that help us learn and grow, and with this experience, he had the opportunity to build something more significant in his life.
Pete believed he only had one positive thing left in his life - a registration entry into the 2018 London Marathon. In spite of his many emotional challenges, he bravely dedicated time to train every day for three months. He completed run sessions of over two hours on a noisy treadmill that faced a brick wall. That is some extreme dedication! With three weeks left until race day, Pete’s doctor advised that doing the race could be detrimental to his wellbeing, due to the medication he was taking. The doctor feared there was a potential for Pete to negatively react due to the overwhelming pressure of this event. Knowing how much this race meant to him, I gathered support and got myself to London for the weekend.
In a world where judgement, rapidly expressed opinion and vitriol are but a The day before the race, we met and keystroke away, we often find ourselves devised some race goals, to ensure he stressing about what others think of us. was as prepared as possible, and could focus on his own plan. We stress about trying to appear successful; we stress about the “what Race day came and while there were ifs” of our decision making; we stress people failing due to the “extreme about things that, ultimately, really heat” of 22c. Yet Pete stuck to his plan. don’t matter. But since when were we supposed to be perfect? We met in a few strategic places along
the course and Pete absolutely nailed his first ever marathon. He didn't stop once during the 42.2km, having only run on a treadmill for three months previously. I met up with Pete the day after the race. The change in his demeanour was apparent. The man I spoke to was a different person - positive, confident, proud. My fondest memory was of the smile that he now wore on his face. Pete had battled through very dark times. He was told that he shouldn’t and wouldn’t be able to finish the marathon. But he perservered, drowned out the noise and conquered something extraordinary. Now is the start of a new chapter in his life, and all it took was for one person to believe in him, to give him hope, and be the positive influence he needed. We all have the opportunity to give someone hope; to do something small that can seem insurmountable to them. I challenge you to do something positive for someone you know - no matter how big or small. I guarantee it will make the world of difference to them!

Spilling the Beans on.. TIME MANAGEMENT These days most of us are guilty of taking on more than we can manage. Whether it be work, family or social commitments, the option to say ‘no’ is becoming increasingly difficult. With smart phones becoming a permanent extension of our hands, it can be virtually impossible to switch off.
KATE
JAYDE
MARNIE
This issue we met with three busy mums to get their perspective on modern-day time management! Jayde Neil Special Needs Teacher Aid Kate Bickford Agrums Owner/Operator Lady Douglas River Cruise Marnie Gabbert Legal Secretary
When it comes to juggling day to day tasks, do you follow a strict routine or do you prefer to wing it? MARNIE: Deep down, I would love to follow a strict routine. I am extremely methodical: I like my cutlery all the same way in the drawers, I like everything in its place, I love neatness and symmetry. But life is full of interruptions, internal and external, and my life is currently just flown on a wing and a prayer. I would get too disappointed if I didn’t meet my daily expectations so instead, I just hope I tick a few boxes. KATE: I follow a reasonably strict routine on a day to day basis, especially with the kids and their before and after school activities. I try to fit most of my work in between school hours, but I always end up finishing it off after kids are in bed, sometimes until 10pm. JAYDE: I usually wing it! I know roughly what needs to be accomplished each day and so long as I can mentally tick
the important tasks off my imaginary list then I’m happy! Why do you think people are finding it increasingly difficult to fit everything into the day? MARNIE: I think we raise our expectations far too high. I want my house to look like all those glossy saved Pins, I want my children to eat raw natural homemade food, I want everything I do to be perfect at work and home. Striving for perfection is exhausting and impractical to achieve. Oh, and most of all, I blame my phone!!! My evil phone. It is the reason why I want perfection through my Pinterest addiction and the reason why I will never achieve it through my short attention span!!! KATE: I think more people and especially, young families have higher expectations of housing these days , therefore have higher mortgages and have to work longer hours to pay them off. So juggling a family and working full time is a challenge. I think 20 years ago most people had smaller
home loans and would work less hours than today. JAYDE: I’d like to say it’s because I take on too much but if I’m perfectly honest it’s because I’m hopeless at time management. Is there a particular task you consistently fail to complete? MARNIE: Housework. And with two young children, the question is: Why bother? KATE: Mmmmm, probably helping out more on the boat side of our business. I keep trying to get out there to physically do more on the actual boat, but find my days are always full to the brim with juggling kids and covering my duties within our business which is management, marketing and admin. JAYDE: The one thing I consistently fail to complete lately is making time for myself to exercise. What would be your number one tip on getting things completed on time? MARNIE: I am not the person to ask that question!!! I am the biggest procrastinator in the world and apparently… I thrive on stress. However, when push comes to shove, I can be focused and hardworking. I know the benefit of prioritising.
KATE: I am an avid "LIST PERSON", without a daily list I feel like I go around in circles! I make a list, smash through it and know I am on top. Mind you, I do work late most week nights to get through it, but not on weekends, that's fun, family time. JAYDE: Write a list (note to self!) If you could change something about your current workload or routine, what would it be? MARNIE: There’s not a great deal I need to change at work. I’ve been doing my job a long time and I know how and when to get things done. It’s my home life that’s a shamble. I really need to work on creating a simple life: I need declutter my thoughts and my house, and learn to say no. KATE: To get up early and do my exercise before the daily school routine starts. I find when I try to squeeze in anything like a quick run or class during my work hours, I am behind for the whole day. JAYDE: I am easily distracted so if I could remove all sources of social media, reading material & random boxes of treasured items out of my house then that could really improve my daily routine & my ability to get more things done!
At Work With.. HEMANT & EVONNE DAYA Dayatech Automation. Smart Home Specialists.
When Hemant decided to exit corporate life in Sydney, a move to Cairns was the perfect sea change. Hemant admits to being a misfit in the corporate world and quickly felt right at home in the Far North. “Cairns has an entrepreneurial spirit that we love; there are so many fantastic businesses evolving here, and the community are so welcoming. One thing I disliked about Sydney, you could go to the same coffee shop for ten years, and no one would care, here it’s the complete opposite.” Hemant and his wife Evonne have turned a passion for solving problems, into a thriving home and business automation venture. To put it simply, home automation refers to the ability to control
everything around the house – from switching the lights to opening the door – with a simple push of a button or a single tap on the screen. Home automation was often thought of in the past as elitist or perhaps like something out of a James Bond movie, but now it is not only affordable but in many cases necessary. It has become an essential element in the quality of life for those with disabilities, and a revolution in home security, it can make life much safer. Hemant first began messing around with automation in his university dorm, he laughingly suggests that it came about out of “pure laziness”. He achieved many qualifications which include an engineering degree, a Masters in Information Security, he is
a Microsoft Certified Engineer and an Open Framework Architect. You could argue that Hemant has proven to be anything but lazy. Evonne also has an extensive background in engineering and IT and together they automated their first home. The couple then moved into aquarium automation then progressed to home and business automation projects. They thrive on the challenge of working out solutions to make lives easier. “We provide a custom designed and installed technology and entertainment systems for both residential and business customers
with a particular specialty in dedicated home theatres, dedicated music listening rooms and wireless whole-house music and entertainment systems. On any size job, you can expect on-time performance, high-level workmanship and meticulous attention to detail. Anything is possible; you just have to think a way around things.” When asked what currently most excites them about automation, they answered, “the assisted living space”, it can help people live safer, more comfortable and independent lives within their own homes; it can improve confidence and quality of life for elderly people and those with disabilities.” It is an exciting time to work in the
area of home automation, with big companies spending billions on artificial intelligence, home automation is soon to become the norm. If the idea of home automation excites you, why not start in stages? Lights first, then sound or keyless entry solutions? Drop in to see their showroom Suite 5, 320 Sheridan street, or make an appointment for a more detailed conversation. If you have an automation idea and are not sure if it’s possible, Hemant and Evonne would love to hear from you. “The personal connection that we have with our customers is our core focus, along with the ability to provide solutions that offer the smartest and most convenient way to live and operate”.
Alex Paukovits EXCELS IN KENDO With lots of noise, yelling, big sticks and few other girls at her regular club training, it’s a wonder she stayed.
BLUEY’S FORESIGHT JOHN FORSYTH Alexandra Paukovits has a true passion for her sport. This passion started at sixteen years of age, when she was first introduced to the Martial art sport of Kendo. At first, it was not necessarily the sport that was appealing to Alex, more so the people involved in the sport. A chance invitation by a friend to experience Kendo in Year 11 at Cairns High, has now resulted in Alex becoming an integral member of the Australian team. “When I first saw Kendo I was intimidated, but I ended up sticking to it because of how friendly and welcoming everyone was”, Alex recalls. With lots of noise, yelling, big sticks and few other girls at her regular club training, it’s a wonder she stayed. She was taken by the Japanese etiquette of respectfulness and a sense of humble modesty demonstrated through acts such as not celebrating winning points, or the simple gestures to acknowledge an opponents good strike. This shy girl soon became hooked, and borrowed old club armour for three years until she finally got her own. It all started when Alex was studying Japanese Language at James Cook University. Kendo was part of the Australian University Games schedule, so decided to give it a go. “In 2010 I impulsively flew to Perth to the University games. I got permission to go and represent JCU and I flew to Perth by myself “ Alex states. She had never been to a Kendo event so she didn’t know what to expect . “The A N U club allowed me to do a warm up with them. I felt accepted in
the Kendo community of the Universities and that just reinforced for me how important good sportsmanship was in the sport." Alex travelled to Japan after University on a working holiday visa and continued to participate in Kendo. This was a new learning curve for Alex as she realised how much there was still to learn. “The good thing about the Japanese was that, for them, a foreigner getting involved in their sport and wanting to be part of their culture really touches them, and they take you on and almost adopt you - everything you do they help you with.’' Returning from Japan, Alex applied for selection in the Queensland Kendo team, and with no other women applying that year, she was selected to represent the State at the national titles. In 2013, Alex started participating in competitions and developing her skills. With competition experience, and her Cairns Sensei's coaching, Alex was gaining a reputation for herself in female Kendo ranks. Alex gained selection in the Australian team in 2014 to compete at the World Kendo Championships 2015 in Tokyo. She fought in both the individuals and the team matches, and learned about competing at that level. Now at 2017, Alex is entrenched in the Australian Kendo Team once more. She is currently preparing for the World Kendo Championships in South Korea, in September. “I think we have a much stronger Women’s team than 2015 “ Alex believes the experienced team know what to expect; the noise, the effort and the experience of the high pressure tournament. Alex is hoping to help the Women’s team achieve success in September. The goal is top four placement so I wish her well in South Korea.

Our skin tone is a rainbow of colour no matter the ethnicity of our being. You see no two skin tones are the same. So why settle for anything that is ok, when it can be perfect!
Dark is indulgent and it’s beautiful, but it has not been so inclusive in the world of makeup. In fact brands still continue to market shades that are not quite the right fit for the decadence that dark skin is. Dark skin has a natural luminescence with blue/purple deep cool or warm red/yellow undertones that most brands seem to miss.
“The joy on every person's face is clearly felt when one is accepted and included for their very own unique beauty… what they are born with and what this great country of Australia is.”
When determining the right shade of foundation makeup for any skin tone we need to look at not only the visually appealing overall tone, but a deeper undertone. These undertones can vary from yellow, blue, green, pink to ash. The

Self Care for a Healthy BODY & MIND PHYSIO SUZANNE RATH
Wellness Embodied
Self care; It’s a phrase often bandied about, that means lots of things to different people. As practice principal of Wellness Embodied, I’ve seen people at various stages of the self-care spectrum over my 12 year physiotherapy career. From patients in intensive care units, to athletes trying to stay injury free. I’ve also been on my own journey. As both a business owner and healthcare practitioner, I often find I neglect myself most, so I’ve had to find what works best for me, as well as my valued clients. Here are a few of those things! Craniosacral Therapy: While not especially well known in Cairns, Craniosacral therapy is much loved by its followers for the wide range of outcomes it can achieve. From decreased stress and anxiety, to faster progress in orthodontic work, the possibilities are limitless. As a light touch technique, it involves working on the connective tissue to achieve improved movement throughout the system, but especially in the bones of the cranium (skull). Best of all, it can be tolerated by almost anybody. At Wellness Embodied, Craniosacral Sessions last for
an hour and are performed by me as a physiotherapist, making them eligible for health fund rebates.
or MRIs for you, often we don’t need to as we can alleviate your issue completely without expensive imaging.
Listen to your body: All too often we experience injury, stress, or pain when we ‘push through’. Whether it’s a movement we shouldn’t be doing or we are just too tired to keep up a task, constantly pushing through can be detrimental to mental and physical health. It’s important to note here, that mental and physical health are tightly intertwined. In fact, many of the chemical changes that cause anxiety and depression are like the chemical changes that cause chronic pain. Do you experience worse headaches and pain when you’re tired, angry or stressed? From a physiotherapy viewpoint, it’s important to seek an expert opinion as soon as you get injured or are suffering from pain. Physiotherapists are trained allied health practitioners who work closely with doctors and specialists. We’re also the best value option. As experts in the musculoskeletal system, an appointment will involve a full assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, while we can request Xrays
Chat with friends; One of my main goals in setting the practice up was being able to form relationships and work with a range of healthcare practitioners to achieve the best possible outcome for my clients. I believe this approach is highly unusual in physio and I strive to ‘go the extra mile’! For this reason, I run a free monthly ‘Wellness Wednesdays’ event, featuring local speakers and presenters in health and wellbeing. I’m also excited to announce an upcoming collaboration with Jeany Schall of Soul Motion Yoga on Sunday 3rd June, from 10am-12pm. We will be facilitating the workshop ‘Rise Above Pain.’ Featuring helpful strategies and education to empower attendees to manage their own pain. Become educated on pain theory, gentle yoga flows, nutrition, essential oils, pacing techniques, plus receive a copy of my eBook, ‘Reframe Your Pain.’ For more information on any of the events, get in contact at any time on the channels below.

Top Five Athletic Benefits OF MAGNESIUM SKINCARE SABINE SCHROEDER
Spa in a Jar
Are you sore after hard workouts? Do you feel bowled over by exercise stress? What about sleep? If you can’t remember the last time you had a restful night, there’s a good chance you’re not getting enough magnesium. As the second most prevalent electrolyte in the human body, we know that magnesium plays a crucial role in cell energy production and recovery. Even small shortfalls in magnesium can seriously impair performance. A 2012 study of elite runners found that it was magnesium, not sodium or potassium, that was the electrolyte most depleted during the race. Low magnesium stores resulted in significant cramping and inflammation for the runners. Here are five critical reasons to make sure your magnesium levels are up to par; 1. Greater Strength - If you’re not optimizing your magnesium stores, you’re missing out on peak performance and muscle gains. Without enough magnesium, enzymes that enable muscle protein synthesis are impaired, compromising recovery, hypertrophy, and strength.
2. Hormone Balance - Healthy testosterone and balanced cortisol levels can make or break an athlete. Magnesium helps maintain this equilibrium by helping to free up testosterone so it can work its magic in the body. It also allows for the metabolism of the stress hormone cortisol after workouts by reducing nervous system activation. 3. Better Insulin Sensitivity & Body Composition - Magnesium is known as the mineral of insulin sensitivity. It helps your body metabolize carbs while influencing the activity of hormones that control blood glucose levels. Robust magnesium creates a metabolic environment that will help you get superior muscle development and a leaner body composition in less time. 4. Faster Recovery - Magnesium accelerates recovery processes and aids sleep. It fights inflammation, relieves cramps, raises antioxidant levels and replenishes energy stores in the muscle. It also calms the central nervous system lowering the heart rate for a restful sleep. 5. Greater Power & Vertical Jump -
Magnesium is necessary for the explosive movements, making it a key nutrient for athletes who want to enhance athletic performance. Volleyball players who took 350 mg of magnesium for 4 weeks increased vertical jump height by an average of 3 cm. How To Take Magnesium: Scientists recommend a minimum of 3.5mg – 7 mg per kilo of body weight a day, up to 10mg/kg for athletes. Some of this can be consumed from food - whole oats, raw nuts, beans, and bananas. However, due to food production from depleted soils this is never enough. The easiest/most efficient way is using a well-formulated magnesium spray on your skin in the morning, after training or even during competition. With an absorption rate of under 2 minutes you will boost your body functions exactly when you need it. Stay away from any oral forms of supplementation as the stomach acid required to digest it destroys over 2/3 of what you think you are getting – and makes you feel queasy in the process, not a very efficient mode of delivery at all.

What’s Trending in REAL ESTATE REAL ESTATE RENEE AMADIO Owner & Sales
The property market – such an exciting chapter of life! Forever changing and adapting to meet the wavering trends of society. We’ve made a list of what’s trending in todays market The Use of Amazing Technology What is this amazing technology driven world we live in? With cutting edge technology literally at our fingertips, the way in which properties are marketed has revolutionised. Employing the use of drones, video campaigns and interactive maps, the real estate world will never be the same. Innovative technology allows individuals to browse like they never have before. The use of mini remote-controlled helicopters to gain the best footage possible has everyone talking. First Home Buyers Grant – Rise in Young People Entering the Market What better time to enter the property market than to receive a bonus $20k for doing so! Albeit some terms and conditions attached, this is an amazing tool to help young individuals & couples reach their dreams of buying or building their first home.
Granny Flats As a real estate agent, I have seen an incredible rise in families looking for homes with a retreat or “granny flat” in the back yard. As years go by, with cost of living on the rise, families are cohabiting together more and more often to save on the property spend. Digital Real Estate Social media is beyond evident in everyday life, it allows messages to reach the masses within seconds. As a real estate agent, this is a tool we have employed in every day practise. Social media and the likes of Instagram & Facebook allow companies to interact with clients & individuals in a way like never before. Consumers are turning to their mobiles in search of their perfect homes. Airbnb The new age way of earning income from your investment property! Air BNB is on the rise and the cash cow investment option is proving more and more popular in this space. For those who aren’t prepared for the upkeep and management side of things – there are many ways to outsource
to companies that specialise in providing this service for your Airbnb property. Locally, Host My Home Cairns provide this service and do an exceptional job! Where is the Cairns property market headed? Onwards and upwards is the Cairns market! With our city skyline embracing a multitude of new developments and ample projects under way, it is a perfect example of positivity in the market place - especially regarding growth and expansion. We anticipate this to have a large positive impact on the property market particularly in regard to it regaining momentum. Having just opened the doors to our boutique agency at the beginning of the year, we have endured a steady growth period. As always, it has been fantastic meeting and interacting with Cairns locals and investors. We love getting to know each and every one of our clients and hearing their stories. Being heavily affiliated with the development that is Nova City, we are busting with excitement to observe the journey and the growth carried with it. We look forward to the completion of all projects!

Choose a law firm that specialises in Family law and are experts in their field. Do they have specialist accreditation? Does their reputation precede them? Seek referrals and recommendations from friends and colleagues. Do your research. Your lawyer should first and foremost be Accessible. Your phone calls and emails should be answered or returned promptly and your lawyer should be relatively easy to access and to make an appointment with should the need arise. Technology has changed the way that lawyers communicate with clients and there is no reason why your lawyer should not be available to you. Your lawyer has a responsibility to Maintain client/solicitor confidentiality, a
protection which belongs to you as the client. All of the details of your case should be handled with the utmost confidentiality and respect for your privacy. Your lawyer should act ethically at all times. Your lawyer is subject to principles and values and conduct rules that guide them in their practice. They have a duty to you as their client as well as a duty to the court to conduct themselves at all times in a professional and discrete manner. Your lawyer should keep you Informed and be an effective communicator in letting you know about respective court imposed deadlines, any foreseeable delays, setbacks and difficulties with your matter and providing you with sound advice on your legal prospects. You should also be kept regularly informed of your legal fees and given a detailed explanation and disclosure of your lawyers’ fees and accounts. Do not be afraid to discuss your fee structure with your lawyer at all times.
Above all your lawyer should know their Law. After your first appointment with your lawyer you should be feeling a level of comfort in their competency and that they will bring their knowledge and expertise of the family law and legislation to the fore on your matter. Your lawyer should be able to provide you with clear and concise advice as to the best way to resolve your divorce and family conflicts. You should look for a lawyer that is progressing your matter in a timely manner. Litigation can be an expensive, time-consuming and stressful process. Your lawyer should be mindful of this and using their best abilities to help you achieve a result as soon as practicable after your separation. If you have a specific family law topic you would like dealt with in this column please email me at tleahy@wgc.com.au. Any communications will be treated in confidence.

The Future of BUSINESS CHAMBER CHATTER RHIANNON SIMCOCKS Cairns Young Chamber
Have you heard? The Cairns Young Chamber has been re-focused and re-launched in 2018. The Cairns Young Chamber (CYC) has been too quiet, for too long now and last year’s Emerging Leaders (annual leadership development program delivered by the Cairns Chamber of Commerce) told us they wanted CYC to be a platform for the under 35 emerging professionals, business owners, movers and shakers to come together, support each other and be supported by the broader Cairns Community in their leadership and future endeavors. They started just that! 6 months on and we’ve just re-launched a refined and punchier 7 month Cairns Young Chamber, Emerging Leaders Program. We have 12 participants this year and a programme like never before – full of learning opportunities, workshops, presentations, mentoring opportunities and further study opportunities. We’ve also brought together 8 passionate, dedicated and inspiring young leaders to

steer our new CYC Committee. The Committee will be the driving force behind a renewed vision for the CYC and are tasked with the opportunity to turn big ideas into actions that have an impact. But before we launched into the ‘doing’, we asked our CYC membership, past Emerging Leaders, current business leaders and stakeholders what they wanted CYC to achieve over the longer term. There were three key themes that ran throughout every discussion and focus group we held – CYC should exist to support the advancement of young careers and leadership skills, to enable and connect young people to opportunities to have some influence over the issues that matter to us and finally, to facilitate and support our next generation in making a contributing to the betterment of this region. Advance. Influence. Contribute. What was loudest, clearest and strongest – was that money, career progression, profile and networks are all part of it – but they aren’t the driving motivation for our next generation. The driving motivation is being able to contribute to the future of our
wonderful region. So. In 2018. CYC will be about the networking, connecting, and bring together our next generation. But it will also be about something much, much bigger. It will be about mobilising that generation as valued contributors, as influencers of positive social outcomes and the future of this region, and about building the leadership capacity in our next generation. So please get involved. Sign up to be a member (it’s free right now!), reach out to support the CYC or encourage your younger employees to stretch their wings and get involved. You can find out everything you need to know via the Cairns Chamber of Commerce website – and the CYC tab. “It takes a village to raise a child”. It’s one of my favorite sayings. I believe that similarly, it takes a community of strong leaders, to raise even stronger leaders in our youth. And we believe, through dedicated effort and clear strategic direction, that the new CYC can become part of the leadership development fabric of this region.

No More Stashing Cash UNDER THE MATTRESS ACCOUNTANT CHARISSE RUSSELL
Director
Why you ask? Well, in a budget that got a lot more coverage than it deserved, it was one of the few things that caught my attention enough to warrant a second glance. As of the new financial year, business’ that are registered for GST can no longer accept cash as payment for any item that costs more than $10,000. In a bold move, the government hopes it will re-invigorate the ailing Money Laundering Industry. So, with the proceeds of your criminal endeavours now a little harder to conceal, what else can the average taxpayer expect from this year’s Budget? Not a lot really. Nothing that will have you waiting for your PAYG Summary (Group Certificate) like the local hospitality industry and Lycra fanciers thinking about the annual ironman explosion. Apart from the low to middle income offset, which will not always translate as cash in a refund (so please don’t start spending it yet) most of the budget measures are small changes aimed at making tax evasion a
little more fiddly for people and companies with complicated tax structures. Without any of the fanfare of the budget, the ATO also released their watch list for this year, and one thing they are cracking down on in particular this year is ‘Cash Only’ businesses. So, it may be time for all of the small food court operators to think about getting an EFTPOS facility, initially to avoid scrutiny, but also as part of a long-term strategy to get a greater share of the increasingly cashless market that they are operating in. Also, on the ATO naughty list, are those “deductions that don’t require any proof” deductions that people expect their tax agent to put into their returns, things such as laundry costs, phone and internet expenses and especially the cents per kilometre method of calculating vehicle expenses, which always seems to conveniently be the maximum. You can still claim these, but if you get audited, you will be required to
prove that these claims are justified. All in all, this Tax Season isn’t going to have any shocks or super happy surprises in store for most of us, and as the government lead us away from the Cash Economy, and reduce the deductions available for employees to the point where the autofill system can eliminate the need for most wage earners to actually turn up for mandatory government events that don’t include a Sausage Sizzle, there will be a lot less excitement and anticipation for that... HAPPY NEW FINANCIAL YEAR!!! P.S. We are checking with Council with regards to running a 6-month long sausage sizzle. Fingers crossed. Charisse Russell is a Chartered Accountant with over 17 years’ experience in accounting, audit and taxation. Her passion lies in changing lives through her approach in being a coach, advisor and mentor. Charisse has two gorgeous munchkins and has an amazing husband. Charisse is part of the Tax Store network of accounting practices and runs and operates HKS Russell [Business | Accounting | Consultants].
Business Liaison
ASSOCIATION
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS! It’s Our 25th Birthday! We are very excited to be having our 25th Birthday this year. Established in 1993 by Ms Angela Toppin, whose passion for opportunities for secondary school students in Far North Queensland far outweighed any challenges that may have stood in her way in getting this association up and running. Over the past 25 years the Business Liaison Association’s program and vision has evolved along with the education curriculum to ensure that our competitions and opportunities align accordingly. Over the last 25 years we believe that the Business Liaison Association has exposed, on average more than 250,000 students to competitions, events, speakers, exhibitions, careers programs, awards and bursaries. The reason we can provide these wonderful opportunities, is because of our very generous sponsors, teachers and supporters who also have a passion to provide pathways and opportunities for the children who live in our region. We are looking forward to organising some special events this year to celebrate our birthday and show our sponsors
how thankful we are for their continued support. If you would like information on how to be a part of this wonderful organisation, please contact Kerrie Stanley on 0431 022 249 or email eo@bla.org.au. CQU Breakfast – A Recipe for Change We were very excited to have over 150 attendees at the annual Recipe for Change Breakfast which was organised in conjunction with the CQUniversity. Students attended from Gordonvale State High School, Innisfail State College, St Stephens College, St Mary’s Catholic College, Woree State High School, Tully State High School and Cairns State High School. Ms Claire-Marie Pepper shared her story and the opportunities that had presented themselves to her through her career to the students, and they were most inspired by her presentation. The students then participated in an interactive social innovation workshop, where the students worked with the team from CQUniversity and learnt how to recognise and action social changes. They came up with some great ideas.
