MOUNTAINFILM ON TOUR 7PM, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 12

THE GOONIES (1985) 7PM, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 26

A spectacle of fantasy, music and colour, in turn of the century Paris, Moulin Rouge is a high energy collision of comedy and tragedy. The cross-pollination of the musical genres and styles, the extraordinary arrangements and showy costumes, the superlative editing.

Mountainfilm travels year-round and worldwide with a selection of current and best-loved short films from the annual Mountainfilm festival in Telluride, Colorado. These films feature a mix of adventure, environment and celebration of the human spirit.

The Goonies is a smooth mixture of ingredients from Steven Spielberg action movies, made special because of the high-energy performances of the kids. It's a fantastical story of buried pirate treasure, told with a slice-of-life approach that lets these kids use words Bogart didn't know in "Casablanca".

From the PUBLISHER GIDDY UP! Oh, how I do love the horse racing season. Even though, I must admit, I’m not an avid horse buff. To say I don’t know one end from the other is an overstatement, but identifying colours is about the extent of my knowledge. Despite my lack of expertise, I rarely miss a race day. After all, if there’s ever an excuse to pop on a snazzy hat and some fancy pants, you’ll generally find me at the front of the queue. In fact, there are numerous times I’ve been to Cannon Park and not even seen a horse. Sometimes that has happened because, well - there just were too many people to catch up with, and before I knew it it was the end of the day and I realised I hadn’t seen a horse go by. And other times, it’s because the horses didn’t arrive. I’m probably showing my age here, but does anyone remember 2007? The

equine flu was terrorising the Australian equine industry, but Cairns didn’t care. In true Cairns style, the show went on, despite no horses actually running that day. Horses? Who needs horses? When they told us the biggest event on the Cairns entertainment calendar was to be cancelled for something that was happening in the bottom part of the state, we said Nu-uh. We raised a middle jockey’s whip to the people who were trying to steal the most accepted reason to have a Friday off work, and the show went on! I’m sure I’m not alone when I confess that I fell a little more in love with this city that day. Back to the present day, and we are spoilt for choices this year. Cairns Cup will be held over two weekends - August 4th & 11th, and the Cairns Amateurs a few weeks later on September 7th & 8th. Did someone say FOUR new outfits?? If you’re scratching your mane, wondering what to wear, look no further than our Style section to see just some of the loveliness available from YMO Boutique at The Pier. And if you’re one of those who hasn’t been to The Pier since your shoes would stick to the floor of the Pier Tavern and the Mud Markets were a

“thing”, I highly recommend you pop in. It’s pretty flash these days, and it’s overflowing with gorgeous locally owned boutiques, including Wild Sugar by Sajeela and Vivienne Francine. Our gorgeous model is the most entrepreneurial Jodie Mlikota, who is co-Founder of Gathar - you can read all about it in our Meet section. I was hugely thrilled when our friends at Cairns Cup invited me to host the Cairns Cup Fashionable Fillies event on August 11th. Heaven knows I love to chat, so being given a microphone and permission to speak about a heap of pretty things - well, that is basically the stuff that my dreams are made of! So come along and support the local businesses who thrive off the horse racing season, and if you see me, please say hi! I can guarantee, I won’t drop you mid-conversation to see my horse racing past.

What’s on IN CAIRNS artworks speak to the culture, history and lifestyle of Tropical North Queensland, turning the Cairns City Library into an outdoor gallery of pictures, sound and light.

THE ARTS HAYLEY GILLESPIE CAIRNS FESTIVAL August 24th to September 2nd The overriding vision for the Cairns Festival is to deliver a bright, bold and challenging program spanning visual and performing arts, culture and entertainment while showcasing the city's key cultural precincts, nurturing local talent and driving tourism. The Festival for 2018 includes some favourites from previous events and lots of new and exciting ones. ‘Art on your door step’ if stepping into a gallery space isn’t your thing, then don't worry. During the 2018 festival, streets will light up with world-class artworks from a variety of celebrated artists. Check out just a couple of events below. SUBURBAN SATELLITES Truly unique arts events for the whole family to get involved in. GRAND PARADE AND FIREWORKS Head to the Esplanade for one of the biggest community events on the Cairns Calendar. Annually the Grand Parade attracts over 20,000 to the Esplanade to celebrate Cairns and our wonderful community. Cairns Regional Council provides workshops and all the information you could possibly need to make a magnificent float to represent your group, business, or just yourself. Check out ideas online too from parades around the world and the buyback shop at the Transfer station can be a great place to start looking for things to revamp and decorate your display. There are many more wonderful art events around the city and check out the Cairns Regional Council festival site for all the dates. Many events are FREE! It's a great combination to view both international and local artists doing their thing! CAIRNS ART GALLERY until September 23rd One of my favourite exhibitions coming up is Continental Drift: Black/blak art from South Africa and northern Australia. This first major exhibition from a gallery program that celebrates and examines global black art and culture. Continental Draft highlights the shared experiences of contemporary black/blak artists from South Africa and northern Australia. While both countries have different histories, British colonisation had dramatic effects on their black peoples, many of which continue to be experienced today.

Is Brunch the NEW DINNER?

BRIOCHE FRENCH TOAST REDLYNCH HONEY, VANILLA BAKED RICOTTA, CANDIED CRUSHED PISTACHIOS

Move over breakfast, brunch is the

most important meal of the day! We chat to Joan Wilson owner of Tattle at The Chambers about one of the ever-growing foodie trends: brunch. The playful blend of “breakfast” and “lunch” first appeared in an 1895 Hunter’s Weekly article, where British author Guy Beringer suggested an alternative to the heavier post-church Sunday meals in favour of a lighter fare served later on in the morning. Brunch is cheerful, sociable and inciting,” Beringer said. “It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.” While it is still designed to bring people together it is far more elevated than its former self, and is now being considered one of the most important dining out experiences friends and family share in. With brunch one of the most googled terms globally, cafes are changing their menu to allow for this socialising must-do. While brunch might be a more causal experience as opposed to a full-service dinner the food and drinks on offer is anything but. “Our kitchen is embracing a menu

that allows customers to explore much farther than simply breakfast,” Joan Wilson said. “We asked, what are our customers telling us they would like to eat and we listened to them. The key to a great brunch experience is a bustling atmosphere and an exciting menu,” Joan said. “There isn’t a country in the world that doesn’t have a knock out brunch dish, we have created an enticing menu, kept the dishes affordable and added some grown up twists on the classics,” Joan Wilson said. “When people come to Tattle we want them to feel excited about catching up with friends and sharing stories over a coffee or better still a cocktail, sit on the outdoor deck or down the garden laneway and just simply relax. “Combine this relaxing experience with fresh eggs, Tattle’s signature Brioche French Toast or not-so Breakfast Bruschetta and add a Raspberry Rose Bellini or spicy Bloody Mary’s to the mix you start to get a picture of a great social outing,” Joan said. Tattle is open seven days a week from 7am to 3pm and offers an all-day breakfast menu. To view the menu visit: www.the-chambers.com.au/tattle

Food, Friends and Fine Wine AT ESTERS For years my girlfriend Jharna and I have been saying that we need to get together for wine and cheese outside of our usual lycra clad Yellow Arrow circuit on a weekday morning. With the new wine bar Esters opening up at The Chambers and my partner and I (potentially) heading down the parenthood route in the near future we both figured the time was essentially now or never. Plus let’s face it, this exceptional Cairns winter weather is the perfect excuse to go out for a drink or two (hello immaculately straightened hair!) Arriving at the intimate wine bar on a Wednesday afternoon we were greeted by a smartly dressed waiter who showed us to a table and plied us with menus and tales of the fabulous wines on offer. As you would expect he was well versed in the many wines they had behind the well-stocked bar at Esters. I’m no wine connoisseur by any means but I know what I like and what I don’t like so after a short discussion and a couple of samples I settled on a glass of Mclaren Vale Rosé

while my date chose a Pinot Noir from France. Next, we moved to the food menu. With a focus on tapas-style plates and cheese boards, the menu at Esters is designed for sharing, which is exactly what we planned on doing. Despite recommendations for the J.F.C (aka Japanese Fried Chicken with Wasabi Mayonnaise and Chilli Jam), it was cheese we had come for. And copious amounts of it. The ‘Cheese Please’ plate for $34 with Australian cheese, fruit, preserves and lavosh had our names all over it. Looking beyond the wine menu I was nearly swayed into ordering a Gin Bowl with Mt Uncle Botanic Gin, Fever Tree Aromatic Tonic and Orange but as a self-proclaimed Negroni aficionado, I couldn’t go past trying Esters version with Four Pillars specially crafted Spiced Negroni Gin. The arrival of our cheese plate quickly ensued, followed by a flurry of envy-inducing Instagram snaps of the picture perfect platter complete with

fresh raspberries, pickled carrot and heirloom tomatoes. 45 gossip-filled minutes later all that was left of our illustrious cheese plate was the garnish. Mind you if there was any of that delicious preserve left I reckon I could have eaten that too. Wine and cheese at Esters soon rolled into entrees and desserts at The Chambers sister restaurant Soma but that’s an article for another day. Classy and chic with a killer drinks list, delectable cheese plates and exceptional service from knowledgeable staff, Esters at The Chambers is the excuse you didn’t know you needed to go out for drinks on Wednesday. Or a Thursday. Or a Friday... Follow Foodvixen on Facebook and Instagram for Cairns cafe and restaurant reviews and foodie news.

Alexis Wright Gulf of Carpentaria who won five national literary awards, including the Miles Her most recent non-fiction book, Tracker, a collective memoir of NT Aboriginal leader, Tracker Tilmouth, won the 2018 Stella Award. Alexis will be ‘in conversation’ about her writing life on Friday evening 10 August as a free event, and will appear again on the weekend to talk specifically about her Tracker book.

LOOK OR BOOK: www.cairnstropicalwritersfestival.com

Jane Caro is the author of nine books, but is probably best known for her appearances on Channel Seven’s Sunrise, festival lunch, Jane will talk about two of her books, Destroying the Joint: why women have to change the world, and Unbreakable: women share stories of resilience and hope. Jane will also launch Flesh and Blood, the final book in her young adult trilogy about Queen Elizabeth the First, and well as join a panel on writing for young adults.

Robert Drewe is an Australian literary legend with more than 20 highly acclaimed books – novels, short stories and memoirs – that have won state, national and international prizes, been widely translated, and been adapted for film, television, theatre and radio. At the festival, Robert will be interviewed about his recent novel, Whipbird, and the essential elements of writing a successful short story. This coincides with the launch of his latest short story collection, The True Colour of the Sea.

Julian Burnside AO QC is celebrated nationally as a barrister, human rights and refugee advocate, and author, well known for his strong opposition to the mandatory detention of asylum seekers for which he was awarded the City of Sydney Peace Prize. In Cairns, Julian will host a breakfast, be interviewed, launch a new book by Iranian journalist Behrouz Boochani who has been on Manus Island since 2013, and hold a conversation titled Is Our Democracy Working? with Richard Fildler and filmmaker Anna Broinowski. Two fringe events include a screening of his doco Border Politics by EndCredits at Event Cairns Central, and an address to the Cairns for Refugees group.

Ashley Hay started writing in science but now writes novels. Her awards include the Foundation for Australian Literary Studies’ Colin Roderick Award and the New South Wales’ Premier’s Literary Awards’ People’s Choice (for The Railwayman’s Wife). The New York Times celebrated her first novel, The Body in the Clouds. Her most recent novel, A Hundred Small Lessons, was shortlisted for the 2017 Queensland Literary Awards. At the festival, Ashley will join both fiction and non-fiction panels, as well as run a masterclass.

These six are only a fraction of the long list of authors gathering in Cairns for the biennial festival, with a large youth program, screenwriting, playwriting, poetry, biggest book club, book launches and a Festival Book Fair to celebrate writers and writing as one of the cornerstones of Australia’s fast-growing creative industries.

Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery at The Centre for Cerebral Palsy, St Louis Children’s Hospital, Missouri in USA, Aisling started the mammoth task of fundraising $150,000. That’s the estimated cost for this epic procedure.

In Aisling Crehan’s own words, she will be forever in debt to the community of Cairns. “The generosity of Cairns locals has changed the life path of my little girl.” In 2014, Aisling’s daughter, Ciara, was born prematurely at 32.5 weeks at Cairns Base Hospital. Early diagnoses showed that Ciara had Cerebral Palsy (Spastic Diplegia GFMCS III). Over the last four years, Ciara has endured countless medical procedures. When Ciara was confirmed as a suitable candidate to have Selective

“The surgery will permanently reduce the spasticity, by cutting nerve rootlets in Ciara’s spinal cord,” Aisling explains. “And it will greatly minimise the amount of future orthopaedic surgeries she will need throughout her life, as contractures will be minimised.” Aisling further explains that SDR will eliminate pain associated with movements, as well as minimising future deterioration of her body ordinarily caused by spasticity. Without this surgery, it is likely Ciara would lose her ability to walk by the time she is 40. On August 5th, Ciara, her 5yo brother Daniel and Aisling fly to St Louis, via Brisbane and Los Angeles for the SDR

surgery followed by a five day hospital stay. Two weeks later, Ciara will have another surgery followed by a three week block of intensive rehabilitation and outpatient physiotherapy. Four months later, Ciara will require another in person check-up followed by further intensive strength conditioning therapy. “After surgery, Ciara will walk independently. She will feel AWESOME in her new legs, as she will be able to use her whole body freely! I can’t wait to see her not in pain anymore.” On August 4th, the Cairns community is invited to come to wish Ciara bon voyage for her fabulous life-changing experience. “I want to thank the people who have supported us in any way. I am eternally grateful.”

5IF 8IZ As women we are capable of so much greatness within ourselves, and even more so when we choose to step out of ‘the game’ find our unique voice and identity. I had a life-changing moment of realization earlier this year, I was struggling internally because of that little voice inside that many of us have that says ‘you aren’t good enough’. Then something shifted in me, I was able to release that internal block of doubt and comparison and ironically once I started to rise to my full potential and own who I am – my strengths AND my weaknesses – I understood how much more I could support others and

raise them up because my focus became outward and living from the heart, not the head. I wanted to create a space for women to see their true beauty of who they are inside and appreciate every aspect of themselves – so ‘Radiance 2018 – Illuminating The Strength Within’ was born. The unique thing about the event is that it is so much more than just one day. It is everything around it, it’s a feeling, it’s the conversation we have within ourselves and with others. It’s the enablement of self-worth, resilience and rising to be the women you were meant to be.

Admittedly, these debates are also known as property transactions, or sales. When he’s not out fishing, Lance proudly boasts that, in the early-2000’s, he had the 2nd best Fish&Chips shop in Melbourne. Verification on the legitmacy of this claim is yet to being sought. people Leigh Boswell - All the World’s a Stage At Work with Dulcie Bird Spilling the Beans on newborns

All the World’s a Stage.. LEIGH BOSWELL Leigh Boswell’s smiling face is widely recognised in the local arts and entertainment sector. As the inspiration and brains behind the eternally successful The Young Company, Leigh has provided children with valuable experiences and parents with school holiday respite for the past decade.

In May of this year, as part of her involvement in the Australia Council for the Arts, Future Leaders Program, Leigh was invited to attend the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, Imaginate on a Delegate Secondment. We recently caught up with Leigh to hear all about her adventures on this trip. The Edinburgh International Children’s Festival is one of the largest and most successful performing arts festivals for children and young people in the UK and the world. It attracts an audience of ten thousand, including visiting artists and practitioners from across thirty different countries. Leigh describes her trip as a magical life moment. “What’s not to love? Engaging with people from across the world, all as passionate about theatre for young people as I am! I was in heaven!” The Festival program itself included some of the world’s best theatre, dance, multi-media and puppetry specifically for children and young people, with nine days of inspiring shows, events and discussions. “What struck me most was the amount of work for early years, with the stand out productions being ‘Stick by Me’ from Scotland and ‘Loo’ from Spain.” “‘Stick By Me’ was a quirky new show about friendship, play and the importance of treasuring little things. As a one man show it had its young audience sitting on the edge of their seats as they played witness to a friendship between a boy and a paddle pop stick.” “‘Loo’ was set around the bow of a sunken boat in a sea of sand and its young audience sat within hands reach of if it. They were immersed through all the senses as the hot, dry wind from Asia comes alive on summer afternoons. The found (and lost) buried objects while the solo physical performer provided the poetic expression as she moved with the evocative music.” Leigh’s enthusiasm for children’s theatre is evident within moments of speaking with her. “What I treasured about these productions was their ability to make believe with everyday objects, mirroring to its young audience a unique sense of creative play. Yet they also have the solo physical performer welcoming them

into a theatre space, often for the first time.” “For me the stand out productions were the ‘Expedition of Peter Pan’ from the Netherlands, ‘We Come from Far, Far Away’ from Norway, ‘The Road that Wasn’t There’ from New Zealand and ‘Baba Yaga’ a commissioned production from Windmill Theatre Company in Australia and Imaginate,” Leigh enthused. Australia is considered one of the world leaders in producing children’s theatre – and Leigh advised that ‘Baba Yaga’ was no exception. “It was based on the Russian Folktale and utilized many multi-media elements. It was an uproarious musical journey that had the audience mesmerized from the get go. A totally magical and mischievous adventure!” Baba Yaga was co-created by three unique and celebrated artists from opposite ends of the globe. “The really exciting this is that one of the creators, Christine Johnston, will be visiting Cairns really soon, with Opera Queensland in Ruddigore, or The Witch's Curse. I can’t wait for that!” While the ‘Expedition of Peter Pan’ plucked five adult strangers from their busy jobs who rediscover the joys of play by shaking off the shackles of adulthood and flying high with the king of make-believe. This joyous production had its audiences jumping out of their seats dancing and cheering for the adults on stage as they found their groove through the magic of theatre. “The thing I love most about theatre is that it entices the audience to begin questioning their place in society, and what role they can take to make the world a better place.” “That may be through friendships, or action towards social issues or their ability to affirm their own thoughts.” “The inherent literacy in

critical

the visual sense that is played out within a piece of theatre for young people can often generate innovative ideas for our young people to pursue further.” In 2019, The Young Company will be celebrating our Tenth Birthday! And as we hit the double digits, I can’t wait to share with our extended family what we have in the pipelines, and everything I saw in Edinburgh! So what’s next for Leigh and The Young Company? “Well, I’m very excited to be heading to the Opera House in August for a program with Erth and The Dead Puppets Society. They tour internationally too, so I’m really looking forward learning a lot from them.” “And after that, we are heading into The Young Company's 10th Year, and the celebrations include touring in ‘The Young King’ By Slingsby Theatre in August. This has toured to New York and Sydney Opera House, so it will be an amazing experience for our little theatre.” “I’m really excited about what the future holds!"

HANNAH LOWES Fashion Planner

JOANNA MCEWAN Sleepy Time Baby Sleep Consultant

I’m really struggling with lack of sleep, what can I do? SONNY: The earlier you can get organised, prepared or simplify life, the better for you, your partner, children and especially baby. The less we are stressing trying to do things we could’ve organised earlier will effect bub when it comes to sleep & relaxation. Stock up on essentials early because there’s not much you actually need in those early stages but the things you do, are essential. Everything else can wait till after 3 months. If you are time poor, contact ‘Korha Newborn Essentials’ and chat about their newborn essential packages. Also, • Spring clean & de-clutter the house. • Get familiar with organising your grocery shopping online & delivery. • Start making & storing frozen meals. • Purchase a diffuser with some lavender oils. This will help baby & you to relax & sleep when needed. JOANNA: Ask for help. This does NOT make you a bad parent. There are professional services you can access that can help you settle your baby, so you are able to get a few

SONNY SAMUEL Korha Newborn Essential Gifts

long stretches of sleep. Sleepy Time Baby LOVES working with new parents! Tell someone how you are feeling, everything can feel so overwhelming in the beginning, and sleep deprivation can make everything feel so much. Here are my top 5 tips for settling a newborn: • Secure, tight swaddle • White noise • Lots of skin to skin • Use a swing • Lightly warm the bed before you put them down. HANNAH: Be kind to yourself would be my biggest tip. The classic advice is sleep when your baby sleeps, and this is the best remedy. Things will improve, and you just need to survive. Make sure you’re not putting extra pressure on yourself to have a tidy house etc. The most important thing is mum and bub..... if the dusting doesn’t get done, it doesn’t matter. If a friend visits and offers to help accept it. If you can afford it, get a cleaner occasionally. This will free up time so when baby sleeps, you can sleep. Airtasker is great for this!

Any tips for dealing with older kids (who may get jealous) when newbies come along? SONNY: It’s inevitable, however it’s important to explain to the older children that they too needed the same attention. Make sure to give the older kids some responsibilities and have them involved with the care of their new sibling. Make them feel as though they are helping you out as a parent, talk to them and explain what you are doing and why it is important. JOANNA: Try and get the sibling involved with the care of the baby so they feel important in their new role as a brother or a sister. Spend some quality one on one time with your older child, it's not about quantity it's about the quality of the time you get to spend together. During the pregnancy, you can prepare the sibling for what is going to happen and make a big deal out of them being an older brother or sister. Don't beat yourself up about not being able to spend as much time with the other child/ren, everyone will be adjusting, and you can only do so much. HANNAH: This one is a challenge! I think it really depends on how old the child is. My little man is 2.5 and is adjusting really well to having a little sister. I’ve been fortunate to have dad home for a long time to help with him. Key tips I’ve been given and seem to have worked so far..... when you introduce your old child to their new sibling make sure you are not holding them and give the older child a big cuddle when they come in. We bought him a gift from his sister and took in one of his teddies to share with his new sister. Make sure you’re prepared with snacks and drinks when you’re about to sit down and feed. When new bub is asleep try and have some mummy time with the older child so they feel special as well.

What’s the best tip you could give new parents? SONNY: Every baby and situation is different, although it can be overwhelming at times, try not to think too much about it. Don’t just listen to one book, learn from many and create your journey. Remember everyone is going through some radical changes on this journey. Never be scared to ask for help, advice, or talk to a family member or friends. I personally belong to a Facebook group called the KDz (Kiwi Daddys), with 70k members who support & help each other with raising kids. Here is a quote I saw the other day from a fellow KD. “dads, the only difference between you and a woman is tits, so other than producing milk, you can do everything else to help with your baby, so no excuses! Get in and help, it’s the greatest gift of all… to give to your family”. JOANNA: Relax and be informed. I don't mean google absolutely everything, I mean have a list of people and services that you can access and who can assist while you are still getting to know your baby. Try and enjoy those first few months, stare at your baby while they sleep. Really embrace the scrunched up cuddles you get and take as many pictures as you can. The days will seem long but trust me, the years are short! HANNAH: Enjoy every second!!! Even the sleep-deprived haze and the crying every time you put them down. Enjoy the snuggles, the smiles and watching them grow. Blink, and it will be their first birthday, blink again, and they will be off to school. I personally am writing this, snuggling my six week old little lady, after her cluster feeding for the last few hours. I’m exhausted, and all I want to do is go to bed, but I’m enjoying the cuddle as she’s finally fallen asleep and I’m smiling, enjoying this time knowing that it will soon be a memory.

At Work With.. DULCIE BIRD

Chief Executive Officer | The Dr Edward Koch Foundation

Dulcie Bird has been at the driving force of The Dr Edward Koch Foundation since 1997, when she was appointed to the Board of Directors and took on the role of Chief Executive Officer. In that time, it has grown from a fledgling charity to a nationally recognised non-profit organisation. “The idea began in 1996,” Dulcie explains. “There was a group of business owners in town who decided that there was a need for this service. We were identifying gaps in the Public Health arena, and the after many meetings, including with the Director of Tropical Public Health Unit (as the department was known at the time) we formulated our plan.” Dulcie explains that she was a records administration officer and archivist with Queensland Health at the time, and started with the foundation in a voluntary capacity. “Shortly after I started, we realised there was a need for someone to take the role on full time, so I left my job with Queensland Health.” “Early on, the Foundation was involved in many campaigns. However, I became very interested in the mental health side.” It was then, Dulcie made the decision to study a Bachelor of Social Science with a major in Sociology at JCU.

“I think we were the first mother/daughter team at James Cook,” Dulcie beams, as she explains that she was a tertiary student at the same time her daughter, Tanya was studying. “I love that I was able to experience that with her. It was really special.” In 2004, Dulcie was honoured with an Australia Day Award for services to art and the Dr Edward Koch Foundation. “I have always involved myself in community work. It’s my passion and being recognised for my work in helping children with disabilities and in suicide prevention is an honour. But I knew there was still so much work to do.” “Then Cyclone Larry hit in 2006, and that was a big turning point around here.” Dulcie explains that the Department of Communities engaged 120 new staff to the Cassowary Coast and Tablelands area to deal with the natural disaster. They asked the Foundation’s FNQ Suicide Prevention Taskforce to deliver their Life Suicide Prevention Workshop. As a result of that conversation, The Edward Koch Foundation delivered a mental health support program in partnership with Queensland Health and Department of Communities for 18 months following Cyclone Yasi.

“We are now highly regarded for our work looking after the health and wellbeing of people in communities in regional Australia, with a particular focus on suicide prevention.” Dulcie explains that the Foundation now delivers Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses to people across the region. This is a program which was developed by Betty Kitchener and rolled out by her through trained facilitators, such as herself. The idea of the MHFA Course came from an idea that Betty Kirchener had: We have first aid procedures and courses for injuries and accidents, so why not for mental health? The Life Bereavement Support Service is another service the Foundation offers family members and others in the community who are bereaved by suicide or unexpected death, and an intensive suicide prevention which is now being applied in many of the communities of Far North Queensland. “I was up at the tip of Australia just recently, and saw a woman crying. Now, as you know, getting to the northernmost point of Australia is enough to make anyone cry! It’s a tough trip,” Dulcie laughs. “But this was different. This woman was sad. I know, in today’s society, it’s a bit taboo to interfere in peoples lives.

I THINK WE WERE THE FIRST MOTHER & DAUGHTER TEAM AT JAMES COOK

But studying people and watching people is very much what I do. It’s what I am curious about.” “So I approached her, and asked if she was okay. She hugged me and said that her father had recently died suddenly and that it was on his bucket list to see the tip of Australia. She was so overcome with emotions and I was

so glad that I could be there for her at that moment.” “All of the work that we do with the MHFA Course is around recognising the signs of when someone needs support and interaction from another person. We need to open up conversations and remove the stigma of mental illness. If someone has cancer, they

aren’t embarrassed about it. I look forward to the day when people who are suffering with mental illness can openly admit to it, without being embarrassed.”

WHITE WATER

WORLD CHAMPS BLUEY’S FORESIGHT JOHN FORSYTH FACEBOOK @U19rafting

A group of six Young Cairns white water rafters have won the Under Nineteen National Title and now look to conquer the world. Mark Miller is the coach of the Boys who are students at St Andrews High School and Redlynch State College. He said it all came about when his son and others were introduced to White Water Rafting and formed a team at Redlynch High and Mark was approached to coach. The boys aged between fifteen and sixteen who have been together for nine months as a team. They claimed their title at the Tully Pre-worlds White Water Rafting Championships in May this year which had the Australian Championships incorporated. While some international great teams were in attendance it was the young boys from Cairns who stole the limelight with a crowd-thrilling performance declared coach Mark Miller proudly. “Sensational, people stood up in their seats in awe, who are these boys?“ What also impressed everyone was the speed at which they attacked the rapids, and the time they recorded. “The times they achieved far exceed anything we hoped” claimed Miller. This was later acknowledged further when one of the world best open men’s teams, Japan just managed to record a faster time than the Cairns lads by only three seconds in the time trial. This also placed the boys apart from The Japanese Open men’s team as the fastest Australian team overall during the weekend of racing, finishing faster than both National Men’s and

GOFUNDME AUS CROCS – Australian Under 19 Junior Men’s White Water Rafting Team

Women’s Open teams and the under nineteen and Masters teams competing at the dual tournament. After only being together for around nine months the boys are well and truly hooked on the sport, making it easy for the coach to get them to train five days and week sometimes including weekends. This passion for the sport and their commitment to each other is a key reason for their outstanding performance in Tully coach Miller explained. “It’s actually been a blessing, these boys are absolutely loving it, and during the school holidays when I said take it easy, they were out on the river every day.” And the hard work has paid dividends because by claiming the Under Nineteen National title they have earned the right to represent Australia at the world Whitewater Rafting Championships in Tully next year. With the World Titles in their backyard, Mark believes that gives the locals

boys a huge advantage. “They know the Tully River like the back of their hand, that’s the home ground advantage that we will have.” To expose the young guns to the rigours of International competition, Miller would like the team to compete at the New Zealand National Titles early next year but is in desperate need of financial support. “That’s our biggest thing at the moment is sponsorship, trying to get them to another event, “he said. He still holds hope to get the funding for a trip to the land of the long white cloud for the team, “We’ve got a bit of time to get some funds together and get them over to that one, Miller said. Meanwhile, training continues on the Barron River from the Gorge near the Power Station to Lake Placid during the week and Sunday mornings, with the two thousand and nineteen World Championship title their goal.

Be well, Bluey.

THE FASCINATOR: Became popular in the 60s when it was fashion to affix a veiled, feathered, bowed or beaded comb to one’s beehive instead of wearing a full hat.

THE HALO:

Oh hi there Beyonce, we can see your halo! Dubbed this season’s hottest headwear trend is the halo. Whether worn in a delicate metallic style or in a more statement vintage inspired headpiece, the trend is angelic and radiant and circles around the head, revealing the face, eye brows and hair. The Halo rose to fame in the 1930s and was seen as a distinct move away the Cloche.

THE CROWN: Adjust your crowns ladies! You truly are a princess! Your ensemble will be elevated by the regal styling of the gold crown or tiara style headband which will be a hot favourite this season.

THE BOATER: Deliciously on trend this season, the Boater has perfectly round crown and brim both of which sit horizontally flat. Traditionally, boater hats are made with stiff straw and are trimmed only with a hatband.

THE LAMPSHADE: With its small circular crown, the Lampshade is typically flat, but can be rounded – and flares outwards to create a cone-like profile. This style was made popular by Christian Dior in the 1950’s. The classic lampshade design is longer and more flared than a pillbox and made of stiffer material.

Spring Racing STYLE GUIDE FASHION ARABELLA KULLACK

Spring has nearly sprung and that means the spring racing season is almost upon us! As we all start planning our next outfits, here’s my take on what’s making waves this season.

traditionally feminine colours (think lilacs, pale blues and pinks) and on the other hand, strong statements being made in bold, bright colours (think reds, violets and yellows).

Spring sees a move away from the heavier fabrics and darker colours of winter and transseasonal raceware. This season I think we are going to see two strong themes emerge: on the one hand, a return to soft, pastel,

Across the board, both sheer and satin fabrics will be making an appearance along with print clashing and asymmetrical, edgy necklines. I think embellishment and texture in terms of both accessories and fabric is going to carry on through into the spring racing season, and we will continue to see the appearance of the statement earring, whether it be jewelled or tasseled.

Accessories can make or break an outfit, so it’s important to think about what’s really going to help lift and add to your ensemble and pull everything together. Don’t be afraid to introduce new, complimentary colours or textures, remembering that accessories can be a great way to introduce hot seasonal trends - woven or sphere clutch anyone? When it comes to your footwear remember that you are going to be on your feet for most of the day steer clear of any type of shoe that you would consider wearing to a night club or that can’t

stay on until the end of the day. Spring fashions embrace open-toed and block heels, and a classic pump can never lead you astray. When is comes to your millinery, work with your milliner to create a piece that will compliment your outfit. I think we are seeing a true resurgence of hats: wide brim, boater, fedora, top (to name a few) and remember, sometimes less is more. Personally, I am a massive fan of boaters and love their versatility. I think straw hats and particularly boaters are going to be favourites this season for a relaxed, but polished look. Whatever you choose, make sure you feel comfortable and love what you’re wearing as this will ensure a cracker day at the races!

I’m about to sound really vain, but in my 20’s it was all about covering up my face with makeup to hide spots that looked like the outside of a Chockito bar. In my 30’s I was more accepting of myself as my skin was clearer and I must admit after having three children my skin greatly improved. I remember mum explaining that having babies would improve my skin, however, that was no vain reason to begin procreating! Got to love my baby boomer mum, wise one she is. She once was recommended bleach to improve her skin in her 20’s and then she met dad. For a woman of her age and not a real wrinkle in sight, I am happy to say that I just might have inherited her skin. Under all the oil and grease, enough to fry BEFORE

an egg on at times, I can now say that in my forties I have accepted my aging skin and am embracing it. This brings me to say that we all age gracefully in our own time and let’s just say that those lines we inherit are years of tears, joy and our ancestry. Let’s embrace them and give them what they deserve. Gone are the days of me wearing heavy makeup and hello to fresh, light wearing and most importantly, well-matched makeup. Cover or not to cover is the question? Powder or no powder? All makeups are made differently and finding the best texture can be difficult. Our oil production slows down and powder may not be our first favourable option on our BEFORE

If you have a dryer skin, mineral makeup should be mixed with a little moisturiser to help the mineral self-spread and create a skin like coverage without the heavy, sit in your pores look. If you are oily and have skin problems mineral makeup has so many healing benefits. I have come to enjoy mineral makeup not only for its skin benefits but also for its feel good, look great mojo. It truly puts a smile on my face and a spring in my step each and every morning. No matter whether you are 20 or 80 age is inevitable, let's embrace it and make the most of what we have. We can reinvent ourselves over and over throughout our years, but our main goal is to age well, so as long as I can keep my aging skin glowing with a natural looking mineral makeup, I feel I’m ahead of the game. Let’s get you ahead of yours. Look and feel great with a Colores “Embrace your age” mineral makeup session. Best Thing Since SLICED BREAD NUTRITION DOROTHY RICHMOND

A sandwich consists of 2 slices of bread enclosing a filling of anything and sometimes everything. Dietitians love sandwiches as such a variety of foods can be included in just one light meal. The sandwich takes its name from the Earl of Sandwich who, during a long gambling session, asked constantly for repeated serves of cold food between two slices of bread. Curiously the most famous of sandwiches break the 2-bread rule. The American club sandwich has 3 slices of bread and the Danish open sandwich or smørrebrød has one. Sandwiches are a great way to delight the taste buds of all during the racing season. Small open sandwiches make great function items for racegoers as do points which are delicate sandwich triangles. The open sandwich is a popular choice for people who choose a low carbohydrate diet. Although often, open sandwiches are served on Cairns City

One of the main benefits of an open sandwich is that ingredients are visible so it easy to entice diners to the delights of lean roast beef with horseradish smoked salmon, fresh dill, lemon, marinated fish, sauerkraut and low-fat cheeses. However, it is not just the punters who should enjoy sandwiches. Jockeys as do other athletes have strict sports nutrition requirements. Jockeys usually have predetermined body builds based on their genetics and are well aware of their strict requirement for maintaining a low body weight. Minimum riding weights for jockeys in Australia are 53 kg and for jockeys riding in cities and 54 kg for country tracks. Key points for jockeys to maximise their performance include Before a race. jockeys need to have 3 meals a day. Items such as cereal. muffins. pancakes. pasta is all ideal On race days items such as sports bars and gels are easy nutrition, particularly for travelling athletes. Hydration is very important for jockeys as dehydration can affect concentration and coordination. During recovery, fluids are paramount as well as items such as dried fruit and nuts All riders should have a full meal at least 3 hours after competing. This meal should be carbohydrate-based with a good source of protein To all involved enjoy the racing and Bon appetite!

In fact, if you are dodgy deductions is a lot paying for advice that like robbing the local CHANCES ARE THE includes Tax advice bank. Tax advice also needs to be up to date. If you’ve been doing exactly the same thing with your tax for as long as you can remember, chances are the rules have changed for at least some of

things you are claiming, and you aren’t even aware of what you are and aren’t doing properly. Don’t wait for an ATO audit to find out. Before it’s too late, make some time to see your Accountant and make sure that the tax guidelines you are following are correct and up to date, and no matter how much you think you might be able to claim on next year’s tax, remember that there is a big difference between Qualified Advice and what you’ll get from your mate’s brothers works bookkeepers’ mechanics goldfishes next door neighbour. Can You MOVE LAW TAMLYN LEAHY Family Lawyer

When relationships break down it can involve significant change and adjustment to new routines for the whole family. Quite often a separating spouse may want to move to another town, city, state, or country in order to have the support of their extended family during this difficult time or for work opportunities. Where a parent intends to move with their children this is referred to as a “relocation” by the Family Court. If moving is going to impact on the time the children will spend with a parent, the parent moving must seek the consent of the other parent to the relocation or seek the permission of the Court to do so.

spend time with a parent. Particularly if the move cannot be justified by reason of a threat to the children or the parent.

Generally, if a parent decides to just up and move without consulting the other parent and the other parent objects to the children being relocated the court will not look favourably upon the parent relocating. This can have an impact on the final outcome as to who the children should ultimately live with and how they

Similarly, if you are planning on taking an overseas holiday you should seek the consent of the other parent. If your child does not have a current passport written consent is required from all parties with parental responsibility for the child. If a parent has grave concerns that a parent may take the children

If you do wish to relocate you should speak to the other parent about your move and what it would involve. You should try to reach an agreement which accommodates your move and both parents ability to spend time with the children. Maybe an agreement can be reached where the children live during the school term with one parent in a certain location and spend the school holidays with the other in another location. Maybe the other parent will also consider moving.

overseas without their permission they can seek orders from the court preventing the child from leaving the country and can also place a child’s name on the Australian Federal Police Airport Watch List. In circumstances where a parent has unilaterally relocated with a child without the other parent’s consent, whether or not there is a parenting order in place the court can issue a recovery order requiring a child to be returned. A recovery order is a request directed to all Federal, state and territory police to find and recover a child and return the child into the care of a parent. At all times when seeking orders from the court regarding the relocation and recovery of children, the court will consider what is in the child’s best interest. Essentially DO NOT MOVE UNLESS YOU HAVE PERMISSION TO DO SO, either from the other parent or from the court.

Business Liaison

ASSOCIATION The months of April and May were all about the 2018 Careers & Employment Expo! Well at least no one can say that the BLA team ever back down from a challenge… We did it! We pulled together an interactive, fun filled Expo in 9 weeks and many late nights. The Expo opened on the Wednesday night with a 5 star Cocktail Party, at the newly refurbished Bungalow Hotel which is located on Aumuller Street, just around the corner from the Cairns Show Grounds where the exhibition was being held. This provided exhibitors, organisers, sponsors and speakers the opportunity to network prior to the event. This year the Expo consisted of 65 exhibitors offering a multitude of pathways including Universities, Accommodation options, Defence Force Recruitment, Government Departments, Vocational Training Organisations, Traineeships & Apprenticeships, Not for Profit – Youth Well Being and Life Skills, Media and Marketing, Arts, Film, Music and Dance just to mention a few.

As the students entered the venue there was a variety of food vans on location to offer them sustenance for their journey through the expo. Everyone knows it’s easier to talk to a teenager once they have eaten something. Throughout the morning we were entertained with live music from CQUniversity and in the afternoon we had Juanita from Star 102.7 hosting a live broadcast from within the expo. This again provided an atmosphere which was all part of the experience. Our vision this year was to have our exhibitors focus on interaction whilst providing an experience for the students. Our exhibitors went above and beyond to engage the students walking through the doors including virtual reality, games, competitions, a quick lesson on CPR, learn to use a poser tool, express themselves through graffiti art or they could even suit up in Sumo Suits. A massive thanks to our exhibitors for their support in bringing our vision to life, we could not have done it without you all. All reports

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO? from teachers and students who attended the Expo said that it was a success and they are looking forward to attending again next year. The Staff of the Business Liaison Association are very passionate about what we do and how we affect the lives of the students in the Cairns and surrounding regions. We are both mothers of children who encompass a variety of talents. We understand that every child is different and the importance of helping all children to be the best that they can be, and to follow their talents in choosing their career paths. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful 2018 Careers and Employment Expo Sponsors, Life Sumo, Total Exhibition Services, Cairns Show Association, Rotary International and The Bungalow Hotel. We all know that “It takes a village to raise a child. Without the support of all our sponsors and our community we would not be able to provide this wonderful opportunity to the students to

assist them with pathways for their future careers, and help them achieve their End Game! We encourage you to drop in next year and see what all the commotion was about. We aim for bigger and better in 2019!

who want to lead and drive much-needed change. Women who want to BE THE CHANGE. That is exactly why I facilitate ElevateHER – Lean IN Circles; offering supported coaching in small groups of 10-12 aspirational women.

Disrupt the STATUS QUO

While not every woman wants to be in a lead role, we can all help by supporting those who do. Here are 3 positive actions to start with:

LEADERSHIP JILINDA LEE

1. Women supporting other women

Director

If ever there was a right time for leading and driving much-needed change; for courageous leaders to purposefully disrupt entrenched, ineffective practices; that time is NOW.

necessary. Leadership that is dynamic, authentic, with genuine intent, ethical, fair, inclusive and equal. More diversity at the decision-making tables. Yes, that means more women in lead roles.

Why do I say that? Well, if you take a broader look at the current leadership status quo across the world, things are clearly not working well. You don’t have to scratch the surface very deeply to see poor leadership role models, unethical practices, inequality and unfair treatment, lots of shoulder-tapping, C-seat swapping, lots of MDBTY [my-dick’s-bigger-than-yours] power play, corruption cover-ups, and self-preservation strategizing.

Now, I’m not going to list all the gender inequality stats; you can Google them. The data is clear. Global reporting shows that companies with more women on their boards and in C-Suite, decision-making roles, are more successful than those who don’t. It is madness that we still have so few women in executive leadership and governing roles in Australia and our local communities.

Woah! Steady on Jilinda, you say. That’s a whole barrel full of negative blurb. Sure is. But let’s take off the rose-coloured glasses and ‘just-be-happy’ face masks for a moment. Glossing over it doesn’t change anything. This passed-down behaviour is unacceptable, and it’s NOT leadership. It’s time to call it out. Deliberate and daring disruption is

V I TA L L E A D E R S . CO M . AU j i l i n d a @ v i t a l l ea d e r s . c o m . a u

Even more concerning, is the number of women leaving full-time corporate roles and opting for lower-paid part-time work or home-based micro businesses. Many women cannot see a way forward in their chosen career, because of unfair practices, inflexibility, and inequality, both in the workplace and at home. How do we change that? We need to encourage, enable and support women

Leading ladies, please reach down and help other women to step up. Just because you had a tough journey and had to work twice as hard pushing through a strong headwind, while your male colleagues glided by on a tailwind, doesn’t mean all women should do it tough. Get behind your sisters; be their tailwind. 2. Drop the competitive kill-off games Don’t treat aspiring women leaders as a threat to your power base. Blowing their candle out does not make yours shine brighter; in fact – it makes you look like an insecure idiot. The world is better lit by candelabras than a lone candle. Collaboration is a more valued leadership skill than competitiveness. 3. Engage a mentor; join a circle As part of a national mentoring program, both our Directors currently mentor women in new lead roles. It can be lonely at the top, especially when driving change. Make sure you choose a mentor for their character, competence and consistent achievements. In that order. Character matters. Oh, and join a circle of like-minded, supportive women.

Meet.. GATHAR Dinner parties are about to get a whole lot easier thanks to Cairns based start-up Gathar. Described as the Airbnb for cooks, Gathar allows you to jump online and browse through menus from cooks and chefs in the Cairns area. Find one you like and book them in for your next dinner party. Then sit back and relax. A

Gathar team, consisting of an amazing cook and waiter will come to your home with all the ingredients to cook and serve up a feast for your friends, they’ll even do the dishes! The bright idea for Gathar came from local marketer Jodie Mlikota (our cover model), who loved having friends over for dinner, but hated the hard work that came with it. After pitching the idea at a Brisbane start-up competition in February, Jodie found herself on a plane to Paris pitching Gathar on stage in the global grand finals. Jodie has since assembled what she describes as the Gathar co-founding dream team, with the web developing superpowers of

well-known local foodies Nicky Jurd and Kaj Haffenden combined with the hospitality insights from Darren and Jacqui Barber, known for their part in Cairns’ small bars Three Wolves and Gin Social. The Gathar online marketplace is on track to launch in the Far North in September, with Brisbane and then the rest of the country within this dynamic tech start-up’s sights. With three-course dinner menus starting at $60 per person, catching up with friends is about to get interesting. Jump on gathar.com.au or follow them on socials @gatharing to be amongst the first to experience Gathar in your home.
