Usually, the only thing holding us back from trying something new is ourselves. Our self doubts. But we didn’t have these hangups as kids. We were fearless. So why are we, as adults, so scared to say yes to things? Why are we so scared of failure? Is it about time we bring back a little more recklessness? Is it time to try new things - things we have no experience in! To make mistakes? Have a laugh at yourself when you fall down, then dust yourself off and get back up again. It’s time to stop worrying about being so damn perfect! Let’s all get back to being more child-like, playing, and being curious. Jump in. All in. Fail epically and then try again. Have a crack even when you don’t know how. Have a crack - especially when you don’t know how! If you like the sound of this theory, you're gonna love the sound of a free copy of this book! Keep an eye on our social media in the coming weeks, to get your hands on this great read! So what are you waiting for? Let’s stress less and stop taking ourselves so seriously. Anyone who has seen my hair in the morning knows I’m not to be taken seriously. (Let’s just say, Rod Stewart’s mullet is jealous of my morning hair!) Let’s get back to experimenting and failing. And let’s all get back to winging it.

CAIRNS TROPICAL WRITERS FEST

A sundowner with writer and publisher

Anne Summers women’s refuges and health services, while many middle-class women entered tertiary education and the workforce in increasing numbers. When updating the book in 1994, Summers issued a ‘letter to the next generation’ as a provocation, questioning why so few young women identified as feminists. ‘Where are the books or the articles by young Australian women setting out their thoughts, seizing control of the debates, tweaking the noses of the old guard?’, she asked. This succeeded in prompting debate and a raft of new publications by younger women. In 2003 the book was voted one of the top ten books of the past 40 years, and in 2011 the Australia Day postage stamp featured Anne Summers AO in its Australian Legends series. The next reprint led to a 3 day conference at the Sydney Opera House in 2013 titled Damned Whores and God’s Police 40 Years On.

Described by many as the godmother of Australian feminism, Anne Summers will be hosted at a soirée event at sundown by Cairns Tropical Writers Festival from 5.30pm on Monday 5 November 2018. Anne is currently a New-York based best-selling author, editor, publisher and thought leader with a long career in the media, politics and business in Australia, Europe and the United States. Her famous first book, Damned Whores and God’s Police, marked the turning point for women worldwide as the International Year of Women unfolded in 1975. The blockbuster, in continuous print ever since and selling over 100,000 copies, offered a new framework for understanding the narrow options for Australian women as shaped by the brutality of the young colony.

The author of nine books, Anne has had an extraordinary career. Her latest book, Unfettered and Alive: a memoir, brings her story of travelling around the world as she moves from job to job, revealing stories about famous and powerful people she met. She is refreshingly frank about her own anxieties and mistakes as well as her at times heart-breaking family story of violence and ultimate reconciliation.

Anne chronicles her progress as a journalist through the ranks of Australia's major mastheads and her work setting up the federal Office for the Status of Women. Then there are the years in New York working on feminist magazines Ms and Sassy – and her 'Exhilarating –return to Australia to helm Good Weekend and Greenpeace and what International.

storytelling!

This is a woman who broke through so many boundaries to show what women can do. Anne continues to make waves, and remains as committed as ever to bringing change to Australian women. Join us for refreshments and a compelling conversation with Anne Summers, followed by Q&A and book signings.

Quentin Bryce

'I was born into a world that expected very little of women like me. We were meant to tread lightly on the earth, influencing events through our husbands and children, if at all ... and fade into invisibility as we aged. I defied all of these expectations and so have millions of other women.' As women’s liberation took hold in the social ferment of the 1970s, many support groups sprang up, including the Women’s Electoral Lobby (WEL),

'It's the story of an utterly singular woman, who always says "Yes" to life even when it scares her. Her memory for the events, and her frankness about fear, make this an extraordinary memoir.' - Annabel Crabb

Delicious street food inspired delights from around the world.

Getting my MOJO BACK Coco Mojo: Delicious Street Food inspired delights from all around the world, available right here in Clifton Beach. Coco Mojo Bar and Grill, located at 14 Clifton Road at Clifton Beach, serves global street food which is sure to make your taste buds sing happy songs. My dining partner and I chose our perfect lunch table outdoors on the wide patio, surrounded by tropical plants and ferns, carefully blended with Thai style ornaments. Overall, the restaurant projects an earthy and cozy atmosphere furnished with rusty pieces. It reminds me of my home back in Thailand. The wait staff were all so enthusiastic to welcome us, which certainly made us feel at home. Upon browsing the menu, we were met with a plentiful selection of international street style cuisine, in options for small and large plates, as well as Coco Mojo’s signature share boards. Some healthy, green, and light lunch options was what my mouth was watering for, so I chose Thai Vegetable and Noodle Salad. If you are Thai, like myself, or have been to Thailand, you would know that Thai Noodle Salad is one of the best street foods EVER. Thai’s can be a bit critical of westerners versions of Thai food, but I can say on this occasion that I really enjoyed my meal. If anything, it could have been slightly spicier - but that’s just my tastebuds! Traditionally, this dish is made with vermicelli noodles, mixed with meat, or seafood, and a lot of Thai vegetables; and quite often is seen being sold on the side of the road off a cart. The wholesome mix of rice noodles, sprouts, herbs, vegetables, cashews, crisp shallots, topped with Thai style chilis, and lime coconut dressing, got my attention. Topping the dish off with deep fried mushrooms, to balance out the flavor, I chose to wash it down with a Blueberry Mojito - a tall mix of white rum, blue berry, blue berry liqueur, cane sugar, lime and mint - it was refreshing and absolutely divine! The food arrived very quickly after it was ordered, and did I mention how lovely the wait staff are? Overall, it was such an amazing lunch. Healthy, yummy and the atmosphere was casual, relaxing, like eating at home. Phoebe Burke - Roving Reporter and food lover

Moving On . .

withTheJulie Hodge Family Lawyer focus to law, so she admits the writing was the easy part. “Juggling the demands of a young family, as well as writing and publishing, and launching a blog and social media platform was, at times, challenging, but I was determined to finish the project.”

While most of us are happy to spend our second maternity leave tending to a toddler and new baby, Family Lawyer and Senior Associate at Miller Harris Lawyers Julie Hodge added the extra challenge of writing and self publishing a book.

It’s designed to save people time, money and stress

The legal guidebook "Moving On - What you need to know about separation and divorce" was a culmination of Julie’s 12 years experience working in family law, and her desire to provide people with holistic information to help them resolve their family law issues.

“Over my career in family law, I have grown quite concerned about the misinformation surrounding separation and divorce. People need information not just about the legal issues, but also about the practical matters, such as the financial and emotional stresses that inevitably occur after a relationship breakdown.” “My aim is to prepare people for the legal processes and the other issues they may face, and guide them so they can navigate their way through this difficult time in the way that suits them and their family best.” “My book is designed to save people time, money and stress, and to demystify the process, so as to empower people to move towards their new life.” The Cairns local studied journalism at JCU before switching her

“This book is suitable for people experiencing separation or divorce, as well as those people supporting them, either professionally and personally.” “And because separation and divorce is so common, I’ve had a lot of interest in my book from people working in aligned professions such as health, mental health, accounting and financial planning.” The book and ebook is available from Julie’s website www.juliehodgethefamilylawyer.com.au and quote LOCAL to recieve a 20% discount off the purchase price.

READER REVIEW: Thank you for writing this book Julie. It’s just what I needed. “Moving On” is very comprehensive, covering so many different aspects of separation and divorce, which are all relevant. The book highlighted a lot of issues I hadn’t even thought of yet and provided practical suggestions on how to overcome them. It has a very human angle to it. Not only do I now feel empowered to do a lot of preparation for meetings with my lawyer myself, but it was a great reminder about the importance of self-care and the value of a carefully selected professional and personal support team.

Building hope in

Papua New Guinea

Barry Kirby was a "chippy" on sabbatical in Cairns in the mid 1990s when a small newspaper ad for a project manager in Papua New Guinea’s Menyamya village caught his eye. While working there, a chance encounter with a seriously ill woman by the side of the road would change his life. Barry transported the woman to hospital – but the next day when he went to check on her he discovered she had died. He had an epiphany. PNG did not need more carpenters, but it needed more doctors. At the age of 40, in 1995, Barry sold everything he owned and returned to Australia to enrol in a premedical honours degree in Biomedical Science at Griffith University, Queensland. He graduated with his MBBS from the University of Papua New Guinea in 2002 at age 52 and obtained his Australian Medical registration after passing the AMC examinations in 2007, while working as an ED doctor at Redlands Hospital, Brisbane. In 2008 Barry returned to PNG. In 2010 he went back to the University of Papua New Guinea, where he undertook a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to deal specifically with country’s devastating maternal mortality figures. Women in PNG have a 1-in-20 risk of dying in childbirth. This statistic is fewer than 1-in-20,000 for women in Australia. Most of the deaths are the result of women having to give birth in their villages – without access to any medical supervision – and most are due to postpartum haemorrhage. Dr Kirby has spent the last 20 years devoted to the women and babies of PNG. He is based in Alotau, in remote Milne Bay Province. He travels across the difficult terrain to access villages which would otherwise go without any medical assistance. In 2011 he established The Hands of Rescue Foundation to help him fund maternal health interventions across the

Milne Bay Province. He is greatly assisted through donations to Send Hope Not Flowers – a Canberra-based maternal health charity which funds safe birth programs across seven countries. In 2016, Dr Kirby took receipt of a seaplane through the Hands of Rescue Foundation which has greatly assisted his ability to access mothers in need as well as operate an emergency evacuation service for mothers who require urgent medical attention. His work to reduce the maternal death rate is multi-pronged and includes: the provision of mother incentive gifts which includes basic supplies for mothers and their newborns; health staff training and bonuses for dealing with extra work; constructing waiting houses and funding mother to purchase food while away from their villages; installing solar lights in labour wards and emergency obstetric kits supply and distribution; family planning advice and provision; and the use of culturally appropriate plays in villages to educate men on the dangers of childbirth. In June , Dr Kirby was made an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia for “distinguished service to Australia-Papua New Guinea relations through the development and delivery of maternal health medical assisted programs”. Miller Harris Lawyers are honoured to again welcome, Dr Barry Kirby to Cairns to be our guest speaker at our sixth annual charity fundraising lunch for the charity, Send Hope Not Flowers.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. What does a former Mayor, a Comedian, an Epigeneticist, a Fiber Optics entrepreneur, an Indigenous Ranger, a Psychologist and a finalist in the X Factor Australia have in common? They are all speakers at this year’s TEDxJCUCairns. This highlights the diversity of speakers that will take to the stage at TEDxJCUCairns on Saturday 27 October 2018 when it is held for the fifth consecutive year by The Cairns Institute at James Cook University. TEDxJCUCairns is an event for the community, shared with the world, with the speaker videos to date, receiving over half a million views. David Burston from Toastmasters is again working with speakers to overcome the daunting task of giving a TEDx talk. David has worked with previous speakers including Molly Steer (Straw No More), Krista Watkins (Banana Flour), Amy Eden (Manoora Community Garden) and Kate Fern (The Power of Pallets).

This year our theme, meWE, is about what connects us and how we often mirror each other. It highlights the importance of collaborating to identify solutions to some of the social, environmental, cultural and economic problems the world is facing. A group of JCU students produced logos to go with this year’s theme, and following a Facebook poll, Karen Hallard’s design was chosen. Due to licensing requirements our ticket numbers are strictly limited to just 100. Attendees, not only have the opportunity to be part of the audience during filming of the talks, but can enjoy amazing food including a range of delicious local produce and some interesting displays. A previous speaker will return to update the audience on what has happened since 2017, and there will be an excellent range of MCs hosting the event, including presenters from ABC Far North.

OF MUSIC

In joint partnership between St Andrew’s Catholic College and The Gift of Music, a very special event is being presented on 1 9 October, at the all new All Saints Theatre at St Andrews College. Music teacher and 201 8 Cairns Regional Council's Woman of the Year, Maureen Cameron has formed part of a team that has orchestrated, planned and brought together a series of events, art works, music, recitations of the ode, 126 Ceramics, speakers, choirs, bands and local community organisations including the RSL, Cairns Historical Society and Cairns Family History Society. Since the start of the year, they have been playing a daily musical dedication and reciting the ‘ODE’, one for each of the 1 26 service men and woman etched on the Cairns Cenotaph. After this daily ritual, a plaque in honour of the service person is "planted" with the name of the reciter and musician of that day. 126 members of the Cairns community have been invited to design and sculpt 126 pieces of ceramic. These will be unveiled at the Centenary of Armistice finale concert, aptly named The 126 Project. The finale concert will be a showcase of local talent from the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Cairns and also some of the finest music from Cairns Choral Society and Cairns Pipes and Drums. There will be guest speakers, special musical compositions, poignant photos, videos along with music and verse. Rehearsing with all of the individuals involved for many months, coming together in a series of joint rehearsals to put the whole show together – lights, sound, music, art work, official opening of ceramics etc.

IN MOSSMAN

One of the highlights of Far North Queensland’s musical calendar is moving to Mossman this year, bringing a taste of the Orient to the region. “Showcase in Paradise” is now in its second year, providing a two day music platform for musicians, artists and local businesses from across the region to perform, showcase and network together. Bringing together all people who are interested in music or who love to listen to the sweet sound of the talented young musicians around the region. Over the course of two days in November, musicians from all regions are coming into Mossman for a Music Camp and End of Year Recital. Everyone from the Far North area is welcome to come along to these special two days, as performers, audience or sponsors. On Saturday 17 November, students and family will camp at Mossman Leisure Park for the day and be able to showcase their talents busking at the Mossman Markets. Sponsors of ‘Showcase in Paradise’ are encouraged to set up stalls next to our busking station. Organiser, international musician and Director of the Cultural Centre Pty Ltd, Suna Flynn, said the highlight of this year’s program on November 18 will be “Turpan Tango” performed using the rarely seen Pipa (Chinese Lute) and the new Kawai grand piano at the Mossman shire Hall. “We feel privileged to be showcasing Chinese cultural heritage through this unique instrument.” Ms Flynn said. Hosting the event this year is Lynda Irvine, founder and CEO of Music 4 All and Lynda’s Music Studio of Mossman. As well as bringing together the Douglas Shire community to fund the purchase of the new piano, Lynda is an ARIA “Music Teacher of the Year” nominee and author of the “Brag Tag This” music book series. This event is a great opportunity for all music lovers young and old to come together and enjoy the many facets of local music in the picturesque town of Mossman. A chat with . .

RENEE DEMBOWSKI FOUNDER & CEO SOCIAL BUTTERFLY MARKETING

Thirty minutes into my chat with Renee Dembowski, the founder and CEO of Social Butterfly Marketing, I had to make a point to change the course of the conversation. Renee had just spent the best part of a glass of wine firing questions at me. “I love to ask questions,” Renee laughs, as I pull her up on it. "I worked at Customs once upon a time.” So how did this former St Mary’s student move from being a Public Servant, to an innovative, award winning trailblazer in the exciting, world of social media? "I was working for the Department of Defence at the Navy Base, in a HR and Business Performance role,” Renee explains. "I loved my job! I love analysing data-and using the results to make improvements to systems and processes.” A few years into the role I fell preg-nant, and while I was on maternity leave, I was advised that my role was being relocated to Townsville. Being a Cairns girl born and bred, moving to Townsville with a newborn was not an option for me.” “This whole period of my life put me into a bit of spin, honestly. If that hadn’t happened, I would probably still be in that same job!” "Around the same time, my husband, Clint was in Real Estate and he was looking for an alternate marketing solution, rather

drop.” "We started a newsletter called the 'Bayview Bulletin'. It was an 8-page, black and white newsletter, which we delivered to about 3,000 homes in Bayview Heights and surrounds. It had community stories, recipes, new babies born in the area that sort of thing. I loved the sense of community it created in the suburb."

social media client. It was a local club, they asked me to put together a two week strategy. I’m a real planner so I went completely overboard,” Renee laughs.

I wasn’t given a textbook to study

Local businesses realised the newsletter’s popularity, and enquired about advertising opportunites. “More and more local businesses were advertising, and with any profits, we'd put on community events, like open-air movie nights and fun family days which we called ‘Picnic in the Park’."

"I had a full month’s strategy prepared and basically created an unpublished Facebook page, with a month of content planned out so I could demonstrate how the page would look.”

“They were impressed and their support and encouragement basically kick started my social media career.” "At that time, there were only a handful of social media marketers in Cairns. It was an exciting time in the industry!“

"In 2015, I conceptualised the Virtual Fashions on the Field. An innovative social media campaign which attract“I started helping businesses create ed enormous engagement across the their own Facebook Page, and realised country.” I was really interested in social media. I got a real buzz out of helping to "I had a true passion for fashion and a promote businesses. It came naturally love of the horse racing industry. Over he 23 years I had been attending the to me. entirely confident to jump up on stage to be still be recognised and rewarded for their beautiful outfits. This campaign saw a 380% increase in engagement on their Facebook page from the previous year.” “However, the real catapult in my career came in 2016, when I was awarded the Cairns Business Women’s Club Sole Entrepreneur of the Year Award. It was such an amazing opportunity." “I’d previously had some ideas rollingaround in my head about an interactive and collaborative marketing campaign which brought together traditional marketing methods like print and radio and then of course, the beast which is social media. That Award gave me the confidence I needed to kick start my dreams for the Social Butterfly campaign. And when I came up with the precise plan, I made an announcement publicly, I knew it would keep me accountable!”

and New Zealand. “It was an amazing feeling, the ideas and the hours I had invested into the Social Butterfly campaign were recognised internationally. Judges for the award categories included representatives from Snapchat, Facebook, LinkedIn, Microsoft and Fox Sports to name just a few," Renee admits. At the same awards night, Renee was voted in the Top 5 Social Media Marketers in Australasia, and she was given the role of Queensland Ambassador for the Social Media Marketing Institute. As a way of value-adding for her clients, Renee has always ensured that Social Butterfly Marketing is a professional member of the Social Media Marketing Institute, the governing body for the social media industry in Australia. Members of the Institute are required to maintain high levels of industry knowledge and professionalism through ongoing education. This requirement really sets SMMI members apart from the rest of the field.

Voted in the Top 5 Best Social Media Marketers in Australasia

"The Cairns Eye Social Butterfly campaign engaged almost 100 local businesses across Cairns and the Far North, as well as many charities and community groups.” “The campaign was designed to provide a platform for businesses to use social media to build brand loyalty and increase business awareness.” The concept went on to be awarded the Most Innovative Use of Social Media Marketing in Australasia at the inaugural Social Media Marketing Awards held in August this year. This is an annual event hosted by the Social Media Marketing Institute of Australia

In 2017, Renee became the first person in Australia to receive a Diploma in Social Media Marketing, and she is now a qualified trainer for the course. That means she can offer a recognised qualification to help people on the pathway into Social Media Marketing as a career.

“Businesses are starting to realise the importance of social media. Having a formal qualification in this relatively new field expands our knowledge and reinforces the importance of a carefully crafted strategy that moves towards an objective. It also legitimises what we already know.” “But if a Diploma’s not right for you, we also have an intensive eight-week online course.” ”I wasn’t given a text book to study in order to get where I am today. It would have been a lot easier if I was! I wish this course was around when I was getting started,“ Renee says, laughing. “The social media industry is constantly evolving, and every day is a new opportunity to create engagement for clients. Looking at what a business needs, and developing strategies around that is really fun!” “Even in my own business, as it continues to grow, I need to keep an eye on new marketing trends. In the near future, we will be expanding into email marketing, which fits in nicely with digital marketing strategies. Renee has every right to be proud of her business, and of the milestones she has reached to date. She’s capitalised on her fresh ideas and mixed it with a sixth sense for predicting the “next big thing”. Along with hard work and determination, she admits there was another force to building her successful business. “I couldn’t have done it without my family. I’m so grateful for the support they have given me. It has helped me grow my business, at the same time as I was raising my three children.”

Spilling the B eans on.. The sun is waking earlier, we have started looking for the aircon remote controls that we stashed just a few short months ago, and singlets and flip-flops are agai n seeming like a viable option for both daytime and evening wear. Yep - Summer is coming, and with this change of season comes an impressive lineup of concerts and music festivals. With the Cairns region proudly boasting a consistent flow of fabulous performances from local, national and international artists, locals of all ages are spoilt for choice when it comes to summertime entertainment options. Always keen to learn, Oasis Magazine’s intern, JCU Creative Media Student Phoebe Burke, took to the University’s Smithfield Campus to ask some important questions to help us all navigate through Festival Season.

PHOEBE: What has been the most amazing music festival you have ever been to? LAUREN: My favourite music festival I’ve been to would definitely have to be Stereosonic! The 2 days festivals are amazing and I wish they brought stereo back! ROSANNA: I loved going to the Time Out Concerts in high school, but I think the first Grass is Greener in 2016 was one of the best. Peking Duck also killed it last year. CAMERON: I can’t say I’m a ‘seasoned festival goer’, however, I have dipped my toes in, and have enjoyed going to a few of the Grass is Greener music festivals and one over in New Zealand. Whilst Cairns is a relatively small regional town, The Grass is Greener festival really delivers for the community. Bringing acts, both domestically and internationally that wouldn’t normally have Cairns on their list. tional talent we seldom get to see here. PHOEBE: How much money would you usually spend on a music festival? LAUREN: That 100% depends on my outfit, what and where I’m pre-drinking, and, of course, how much is in my savings account. Haha! CAMERON: Generally, I would pay to get into the VIP area to really get up close and personal with the performers. Plus the money that goes towards staying fed and hydrated during the day also need to be factored into events like these. Planning ahead can sometimes save you some unwarranted expenses … arranging a friend or family member to drop you off and pick you up. ROSANNA: I prefer to spend the extra money and upgrade to a VIP option, but you still end up spending a fair bit between food and drinks – not to mention the cab home! So, yeah, I spend quite a bit haha.

SUMMERTIME MUSIC FESTIVALS PHOEBE: What are your tips to surviving a music festival all day long? LAUREN: Food, shade and A LOT of water! With drinking all day and in the sun and heat of Cairns it’s so easy to get worn out! ROSANNA: Make-up, SUNSCREEN, setting spray, plenty of water, more sunscreen, and hair ties. I got heat stroke last year from not drinking enough water - not to mention some crazy tan lines. My makeup also melted off my face within the first hour, so you need to be prepared for touchups. CAMERON: Think long term, pace yourself so that you’re not written off before the final act. Staying hydrated is a key tip. Cairns is hot and water is essential. PHOEBE: What are some fashion tips you can offer up? The best clothes to wear to a festival? LAUREN: This year for The Grass Is Greener I’m so thankful to be dressed by Beginning Boutique. I won’t give too much away but get ready to see a lot of my Beginning Boutique festival looks on my Instagram @lauren.higgs ROSANNA: I always opt for comfort first! Shorts and sneakers with a cute top. You need to be prepared for hours of dancing and the inevitable, people jumping on your feet.

Depending on the time of the year as to what’s the choice of clothing. PHOEBE: Who are you looking forward to see this year at The Grass Is Greener? LAUREN: Oh that’s a hard one! It’s areally good line up this year. I would probably have to say Safia, The Jungle Giants and of course Darude! ROSANNA: Safia, I think they are going to be amazing live and they have a really chill vibe. CAMERON: Drewboy and the Sax addicts are always good … and they are locals! PHOEBE: If you could pick one artist from anywhere in the world, to join next year’s TGIG lineup, who would it be? LAUREN: 100% Skrillex!! I saw him at Stereo in 2014 and he was AMAZING! I would have paid $200 just to see him! ROSANNA: In my dream world – Avicii. But real world Tash Sultana or Amy Shark CAMERON: Tough one, maybe Amy Shark or George Ezra

YOUR SISTER

“It started with a unicycle, and some bitumen. Then five cent pieces became my thing. Then I became a sock merchant for a while. Then I went on some rainbow tangent. This week, I officially became a paper florist, which I had no idea would lead me to banner making for the St Kilda footy club. And I thought playing Molly Meldrum was strange. What is my life?

“Hell yeah, I’m flipping my realised they had just one thing left to do ber last year, yet her legacy lives on in Samuel and the Love Your Sister middle finger at breast cancer! I ... raise some more cash. community. want it vanquished.” The Love Your Sister phenomenon At 11 years of age, Samuel Johnson represented Australia as a Youth Ambassador at the Asian Pacific Children's Peace Convention. A few years later, he was Sally Fletcher’s first kiss on Home and Away. Then, in 2000, his notoriety exploded as the starring character in the cult hit, The Secret Life of Us. Also in that year, Samuel’s public speaking accomplishments w e r e recognised when he was awarded the Centenary Medal in the Queen’s Honours List for Services to the Arts and the Community. Shortly afterwards, he won an AACTA award for Best Actor in a Television Drama. However, Samuel’s most cherished role is, was and always will be that of Connie Johnson’s little brother. Since childhood, the pair were the best of mates. After Connie was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, Samuel made Connie the promise of a lifetime: He would ride a unicycle around the entire country for her, in an effort to remind every young mum in the land to be breast aware.

continued to spiral, and Samuel begrudginly took the role of Chief Spokesperson. Preferring to stay out of the limelight, he acknowledged that the community needed a voice, and conceded that he would do it for the cause.

“Samuel is a bit of a nutter,” said one of the trusted Love Your Sister crew. “Anyone who rides all the way around the country on one wheel has to have at least one screw loose, and most people who know Samuel would concede this.” “But he’s vowed to keep screaming from the rafters until our mum’s stop dying, and that’s why we love him”. And while his most recent screen role portraying Ian “Molly” Meldrum catapulted him further into the public eye, and won him a Gold Logie, Samuel proclaims he has now retired from acting, to spend all of his time in the Love Your Sister Village.

Next us, it was time for the 800,000-strong to accept their next

“I want to be a part of the new ‘moonshot’ and help kick cancer in the face-hole, once and for all.” Indeed, Samuel. Indeed.

And accept it they did it, by breaking another World Record. This time, for creating the world’s largest love heart, made entirely of 5 cent pieces. The “Connie’s Big Heart Project” encouraged everyday Australians to gather their five cent pieces from the car ashtray and down the back of the couch.

Samuel kept his promise, and in 2012, he spent a whole year atop a unicycle vowing to do whatever it takes to remind young mums to check their boobs.

They then lined them all up to reveal 875 thousand kilometres of five cent pieces, totalling more than $2.5 million dollars.

As he circumnavigated the country, the Love Your Sister community was being constructed. It was a community built of support, of love, kindness, as well as some very sweary descriptions of the vile disease that was ravishing his beloved sister’s body.

And just to give you some perspective of the level of engagement this campaign had ... if you lined those five cent pieces up end to end, they would wrap around planet earth 40 times.

One year later, Samuel and Connie were reunited, and sporting a new Guinness World Record for his efforts, and the sum of $1.5 million raised for breast cancer research, Sam and Connie

Yet, despite his public persona, Samuel is an introvert, and shirks at the idea of being a spokesperson for Love Your Sister. However he realises the cause needs a voice and he accepted the challenge.

Together, Sam and Connie and the Love Your Sister community went on to raise a total of $8.1 million for breast cancer research in Australia, whilst also adding a Gold Logie, and an Order of Australia medal to their collection. Sadly, Connie lost her battle in Septem-

All games will be scheduled as either Twenty20 matches, or one day fixtures for the entire season, removing the two-day match that has been so popular in the past. Kevin sees it as move to keep up with the times. “One-day and T20 formats have become so attractive to the public all over the world.” Kevin feels the move to drop two-day matches is a positive one by Cricket Far North. After many years of scheduled two dayers being cancelled due to the unpredictability of the far North wet season, the Cairns competition received the fresh approach it was yearning for.

be no result.“ “With shorter format cricket, you’re providing the young players with what they want, and you're getting a result every week. And it's linking into our representative cricket. So it has a lot of pluses." Kevin believes it is perfect timing. “It coincides with the World Cup of T20 cricket played here in Australia in 2020, which will be huge". While he sees the future of the game changing to the faster action, quick results of the shorter forms, Kevin does believe it has taken some skills out of the game.

"Back in my time there were no helmets, very thin pads and no other padding, which made it paramount to “The problem was, you'd get a Satur- watch the ball and read the bowler. day of cricket in, and the Sunday would You had to develop batting techniques be a wash out, so the match would to counter all kinds of bowling." peter out into a draw and there would

“You learnt to become a good technical player, so the old elements of getting your feet working and watching the ball were incredibly important.” “Players today are well padded up, with helmets, and are tending to be a bit more blasé. Now they just stand and talk, so i think that skill factor has gone a little bit.“ Kevin concedes there are some negatives to the changes. “There is a little bit more travelling involved for the players, but let’s hope it all works out this year.” The Cricket Far North season began successfully with all first round T20 games played on a glorious Cairns mid September weekend.

Australia ECO FASHION WEEK NOVEMBER 4TH - 10TH

Eco Fashion Week Australia (EFWA) began in 2017 in Perth, Western Australia and was founded by Zuhal Kuvan-Mills, artist, designer and earth ambassador for Green Embassy, Australia’s first internationally recognised organic fashion label. The event draws like-minded fashion designers and speakers from around the world. In 2018 EFWA expands to two Australian states. Tropical rainforest and wild flowers took over the cocktail party of the EFWA’s “Green Carpet” launch at QT Resort in Port Douglas in September. Reef Restoration Foundation CEO Stewart Christie headed up a list of VIPs attending the launch of this global eco fashion extravaganza. Radio personality, Angie Ayers, has been announced as the 2018 Australian Ambassador for the global event, which will be held in Port Douglas from November 4 to 10 this year.

From 4-10 November, the week-long eco-packed event will feature community-based activities such as clothes mending workshops, an eco-market with locally handmade goods, designer showroom and education seminar. She said a passion for protecting the ocean inspired her involvement.

“All signs are pointing to our region becoming eco-fashion hub,” she said.

“I’m so thrilled to be in Port Douglas to represent Eco Fashion Week Australia and show the people of Tropical North Queensland how beautiful sustainability can be,” she said.

“Council has the ability to drive a global culture shift towards ethical and sustainable fashion production.

‘With the Great Barrier Reef on one side and the rainforest on the other, this part of the world couldn’t be closer to the beauty and majesty of the systems that provide oxygen for the world. “Our Fashion choices are just one way of helping these struggling systems.” Angie explains, “This event isn’t just going to be a show for fashion lovers or eco-minded people, but for anyone who enjoys an evening out with mates, a dash of inspiration and a whole lot of wow factor!” Mayor Julia Leu said Eco Fashion Week Australia 2018 will be the region’s opportunity to stand up and be recognised on the world stage.

There is a sense that there is an eco-revolution upon us and we have two huge environmental assets in the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics to leverage.” Mayor Leu said this could turn into real economic results for the region. “This could lead to retail stores popping up, education opportunities orprimary production revolving around the eco fashion industry,” she said. “Putting ourselves at the forefront of this movement means a stronger, more durable and diverse economy that creates genuine employment opportunities and attracts people to our region.”

Top tips for A WINNING DAY FASHION ARABELLA KULLACK

The spring racing season has kicked off and the count down to Melbourne Cup has begun! As we begin preparing for the race that stops the nation, here are my top tips for ensuring you have a winning day at the racetrack, whether it be Flemington, Cannon Park or anywhere in between.

1. Stay Hydrated Stay hydrated: A day at the races can mean a lot of time outdoors in the sunshine. As the temperatures begin to climb, don’t forget to hit the H2O regularly throughout the day.

2. Put Your Best Foot Forward Put your best foot forward: Ladies, be kind to your feet! If wearing heels (as most of us usually do) try and find a pair that you feel comfortable walking and standing in, as chances are you will be spending a fair bit of time on your feet. Also, if you are using public transport or are travelling to the track, bring a pair of foldable flats to change into. They might also come in handy if the urge to whip off your heels overcomes you! Shoe inserts and heel guards can also prove useful and provide extra comfort.

3. Power On Power on: If you haven’t already, invest in a portable phone charger. This will ensure you are contactable and can place that last minute bet (or take one more happy snap) if necessary.

4. Fashion Forward Fashion Forward: If you plan on entering Fashions on the Field, make sure you check the fashions criteria, and find out starting times to avoid any last minute rush. Also, double check to see if the race day is themed and if so, dress accordingly. For example, Derby Day traditionally has a black and white dress code.

5. It’s In The Bag It’s in the bag: If travelling with a group of friends, put together a small emergency bag full of bandaids, tissues, safety pins, Nurofen, bobby pins and anything else that might be needed to save the day! Happy racing!

As we start to feel the heat of our sun ramp up slightly, we also tend to get a bit frustrated with our hair and makeup. This is a perfect time to create good habits and perfect styles for summer. Here are some simple tips that will have you springing into the warmer months and looking your best. ITS ALL IN THE WASH I can’t tell you how many times I’ve explained simple washing techniques, yet still most people are unaware of the 2-1 rule. * Two shampoos to one conditioner. This simply means washing your hair twice, the first wash won’t lather too much - it is simply removing the product and oils from the scalp. The second shampoo removes these products from the hair. If you suffer from excessive oiliness, or exercise a lot, you may need to add a third shampoo. * Never go to bed with wet hair, or

But is it just a trend? Trends of late have seen beauty brands launch makeup shades for darker skins with a celebrity or influential star at the forefront of their marketing. While this is a positive start for change, these trends generally come and go and the brands are not actually doing their job to initiate consistent and long lasting change to bridge the gap for skin of colour. Diversity is a much broader term than it was years ago, but have times changed? Diversity is no longer just about the colour of your skin, it includes age, size and gender. But the question remains, are beauty companies diverse enough?

and to represent, people all along the spectrum of skin shades and gender identities.

It is not just a matter of placing a darker model for a current campaign but it is paramount to have cosmetic and fashion brands educated with a deeper understanding of undertones for skin of colour. In the last five years, compared with fashion, beauty has been quicker to act on matters of inclusivity. Driven by social media, beauty has moved to welcome,

People have morphed into a world where they are very much in touch with who they are. They are firm about it and unwilling to change or pacify themselves for anyone. It’s a world of “This is who I am.” “Love the skin you’re in” “Colour has no race”…the list goes on.

This can be a wide spread topic in the world of makeup amongst artists but now more than ever we are living in a diverse world. Stereo typical framing of what makeup trends should be will become a thing of the past, bridging the gap from trending diverse beauty in spurts and making it more main stream and inclusive for darker skin tones.

In the not so far distance away from

fashion and cosmetic makeup are the photographers. Skin of colour photographs differently under different light and even experts in their field are yet to grasp the correct way to bring out the best with a model of colour. I have experienced photo shoots where no matter how great the model looks in front of me the photographer has not captured the natural beauty of the skin tone. In some cases, I have seen women of colour photographed and then their final photo lightened. Is this the way we want to see women of colour portrayed? Models have often been disappointed that the photo is not portraying who they really are. Where is the embracement? Even if cosmetic makeup products are there, that doesn’t mean people can find them. When sales assistants simply don’t know which products will suit their customers, it can feel awkward and difficult going in store to buy your makeup. If sales assistants are predominantly lighter, they are unlikely to have the knowledge to be able to find the right shade for skin of colour. If the fashion and cosmetic makeup industry wants to be truly inclusive, brands need to fully embrace diversity right to the core of their messaging. To be continued…

You do not need to go the Spa Resort or beauty salon to enjoy a lovely relaxing iced tea. You can very easily make refreshing teas in your own kitchen, using products found in your garden and the local fresh produce market, without buying powders and pre-prepared formulas. Often after work, or even during the working day, people enjoy having a beverage to relax. So much of our energy nowadays comes from sweet beverages, so many ask the question: what should we drink? As a guide for adults, daily fluid intake of between 1500 and 2000ml per day is ideal. However, this will vary for individuals. Water is the best drink, so how do we make it a little bit more interesting? Let’s look at some variations of tea: Cairns City

Green tea is made from tea leaves that are processed just after harvesting. Black tea undergoes oxidation, which changes the colour of the tea from green to brown. Oolong tea is a tea that is half way between green and black tea. Tea is high in flavonoid antioxidants. Sit down after work and enjoy a tea of your preference. One nice idea is to make up fresh floral teas in glass teapot, so you can enjoy the colours. Some suggestions are: * Hibiscus and raspberry * Lemongrass and chili * Cinnamon and peach * Pomegranate and lime * Watermelon and basil * Kaffir lime and coconut * Ginger and mango * Lavender and pineapple * Rose and mango * Raspberry and grapefruit. As well as in teas, edible flowers can be used in deserts such as: Passionfruit mousse garnished with the stunning passionfruit flower, and a little rose petal sorbet can be added to complement a dessert along with candied rose petals. A food safety note: only use flowers that are edible, for example frangipani is toxic. Also, if you are growing your own flowers, you need to ensure that any chemicals added to your garden are food grade chemicals. Also, please note that food producers and caterers that use edible flowers are required to comply with the Queensland Food Act so their products are safe to use.

As much as we try to remind ourselves that age is just a number… you know, “forty is the new thirty” and even “seventy is the new fifty” … We’ve all got our niggles. You know the ones; sore back, weak knees, dodgy hip. The things that make us feel a whole lot older than we are. We are probably all also guilty of blaming these niggles on the fact that we are getting older (and wiser), but what if these aren’t actually the effects of aging and are really just the fact that we’re not moving as much as we should be! There’s recently been a big push about the importance of knowing your health and fitness age so that you can really see what kind of shape you are in and change up the lifestyle factors that may have a negative effect on your health and fitness in the future, but what if the future is now? What if you’re already over the hill and heading towards your golden years? Well… the good news is, it’s never too late to start!

In fact, if you’re over the age of 60, studies show you should be participating in regular physical activity to help maintain your independence…plus we know that it also helps you feel better, sleep better and have more energy to do all the things you love (like playing with your darling grandbabies). There are so many amazing benefits to keeping active, especially as an older adult. Did you know that regular exercise helps with: • Controlling blood pressure; • Reducing the risk of developing illnesses and diseases; • Minimizing the symptoms of chronic conditions like joint pain; • Increasing flexibility, mobility and strength; • Improving quality of life; • Boosting brain function and emotional health; and • Maintaining a healthy weight range. It’s so easy to do what you’ve always done

but stepping outside of your comfort zone and adding regular exercise to your routine can make a massive difference to your life! The team at Genesis Fitness Cairns know that being healthy and active is extremely important for your body and your mind, no matter your age or fitness level and they know that older adults are more likely to exercise in a group with people their own age. That’s why they’ve created a range of Active Seniors classes tailored to helping those in their golden years keep active. These 45-minute classes are run at 12:00pm each Monday to Friday at Genesis Fitness 318 Mulgrave Rd and are designed simply to help get you moving! PLUS they’re a great way to meet new people, improve your health and fitness and develop a newfound sense of self confidence… and did we mention they’re a whole lot of fun? It’s true, we can’t turn back time… but we can make physical activity a priority and start moving and grooving now!

The Story Behind YOUR NUMBERS ACCOUNTANT CHARISSE RUSSELL Director

A client of mine contacted me the other day to tell me some amazing news about her business…and that was her Company just won a large contract with a major supplier, and that I was the second person she told that morning [after her husband of course]. I was absolutely thrilled to hear her good news and grateful that she contacted me. Now rewind back 18 or so months ago where the story starts off a little different to the news mentioned above.

numbers. I could see the potential to make money AND not only that, I could see that if they changed certain habits, reduced certain costs where possible AND most importantly I could see this client needing just a little guidance and support that they would come out better in 18-24 months. They did EXACTLY what was asked of them and now the next goal that I have set for them is to look at buying their first home.

SO…

Going back to the original story - the reason why I was the second person for her to share the great news was so that we could work together over the next few months and review the numbers.

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR NUMBERS?

Eighteen months ago, the business and company weren’t doing so great. The company was making losses and cash flow was poor. Around about this time, this client of mine came to us [after going through other accounting firms] for help. We said YES to helping them, because I could see a different story behind the

potentially purchasing their dream home. She wants to understand the story behind the numbers. Your numbers aren’t just something an Accountant uses to “lodge a tax return” [or at least they shouldn’t be]. They are so much more than that. They tell me a story. They tell me your story. Some stories behind the numbers require changes and hard work, but if you learn to understand the numbers, you become a better business owner. You gain the knowledge to make informed decisions. You gain confidence in what’s happening behind your business…by understanding the story behind your business and what the numbers mean. The Value of Your ASSETS LAW TAMLYN LEAHY Family Lawyer

Under Family Law legislation the Court has the power to redistribute the property of the parties to a marriage or de-facto relationship including property owned jointly or individually. The Court’s power in this respect is discretionary. In order for the Court to make Orders regarding the division of matrimonial property there a number of steps that must be taken including identifying and valuing the parties assets. Parties to a separation may need to get their assets formally valued where they are unable to agree the value between themselves. Parties may reach an agreement between themselves for example on the basis of a property appraisal provided by a real estate agent based on their sales knowledge in the market. Appraisals are

generally free and several appraisals can be obtained at once and the agreed value can be the average of the appraisals. However if the parties cannot agree an asset’s value they will need to formally engage a single expert valuer to provide a valuation. Under the Family Law Rules there are obligations, duties and rights which arise from the appointment of a qualified expert to provide a valuation.

The expert must provide an objective and unbiased opinion within their own knowledge and capacity and is not permitted to communicate with either party to discuss the valuation.

Generally parties will (with the aid of their lawyers if they are represented) agree upon which expert is to be engaged and who will pay the costs of engaging the expert. The parties will also agree upon the terms of reference of the expert’s engagement.

Ultimately if you can agree the value of your assets within reason you have a certain control over the negotiation process. However if neither can agree you will need to engage an expert to assist.

The expert may be in the field of real estate or finance or in a particular field depending upon the asset to be valued.

If the parties are not in agreement as to the value of the asset the expert’s valuation report will be accepted and used by the Court to inform its decision in the redistribution of the parties’ assets.

If you have a specific family law topic you would like dealt with in this column please email me at tleahy@wgc.com.au. Any communications will be treated in confidence.

Cruising the Med WITH BELINDA WALLACE HELLOWORLD TRAVEL EDGE HILL

Cruising holidays are by far one of the

most popular travel choices for so many reasons.

It’s your hotel room at sea, aboard a cruise ship chosen for an activity, style or reason that suits you best. Whether it’s an expedition ice breaker, specialist wildlife cruise, river or ocean cruise, adventure seeking, entertainment/party lovers, culinary delights with world class chefs, family cruise with water slides, go carts, wake boarding machines or for all the relaxing and pampering options available with ocean views. Plus so many exciting itineraries and destinations on offer with a huge variety of shore excursions and activities you

Two questions I am regularly get asked are “Where is your favourite travel destination?” and “What is the most popular travel people enjoy?” can plan with a group or by yourself. Such activities include biking, kayaking, submarines, helicopters, polar plunge swimming, and of course you can just explore each amazing destination independently on foot, bike, Segway, or hire a car. The options are endless as my travelling companion and I found out on our latest cruise experience. Recently, I took the opportunity to experience the 8 night Mediterranean journey on the Azamara Quest starting at Barcelona travelling to Valencia, Ibiza, Monaco, Santa Margherita, Livorno and finishing in Rome. Arriving in Barcelona, we went straight to our trendy little hotel right in the heart of Las Ramblas, with wonderful views

from the rooftop terrace. Barcelona did not disappoint as we soaked up the Spanish hospitality, enjoyed paella, Estrella beer, shopping and skip the line pass to be amazed by the famous Sagrada Familia. Checking in to our cruise was like a surreal dream, floating through all the lovely welcome signs and friendly faces. This soon became the daily Azamara service, and we grew happily accustomed to a “welcome home” every time we boarded the ship after exploring each city. My favourite was when one of the Azamara staff greeting us after a big day walking the cobblestone streets with a

lighthearted comment: “Don’t worry about dinner tonight - we are cooking for you!” Humourous, and yet absolute bliss to my ears ... and stomach! Now i can’t go any further without trying to describe the beyond exquisite food on board this

Azamara cruise. The quality and choice that was complimentary , meaning there was nothing to buy onboard included many cafes, restaurants, buffet, gourmet coffee, deluxe alcohol package (beer, wines, spirit, cocktails) 24 hour room service - were all off the charts! Luckily we walked every day exploring ancient cities so we could tell ourselves

we could eat and drink like kings, totally guilt free!

Of course no cruise would be complete without a cocktails by the pool session.

There are so many incredible moments on board Azamara. We loved every second. The friendly staff even remembered which wine we had with dinner the night before. The understated yet homely luxury, that “pinch me” moment when you open your curtains and see the next destination awaiting.

We dedicated the one day cruising at sea to blissful sun lounge, cocktails, BBQ lunch, swimming in the pool. Oh it‘s a hard life on the Mediterranean!

Being adventure seekers, we loved that the ship was small enough to dock into every port, so we could get on and off at our leisure. Azamara stay at each p o r t lo n g e r a n d e v e n overnight at some including Ibiza so you can experience the night life!!! One of our favourite highlights was the ‘white night party’ - everyone dressed in white, extravagant seafood BBQ including lobster, champagne and sailing away on sunset from Monaco. It was just spectacular!

Literally, the only thing we didn’t enjoy was about our Azamara cruise was leaving it. Luckily we had booked a wonderful place in Rome with views across the awe inspiring city. What a way to farewell our trip of a lifetime! Returning with a few extra kilos - both suitcases and ourselves - we cannot wait to plan our next cruise!

Happy travels . .
