Eggs-ercising YOUR RIGHTS WARNER’S CORNER DAVE WARNER Star 102.7
Heads up people! There’s an election on the way and the following politically opinionated rant may offend. I should also point out that my opinion doesn’t necessarily represent the views of this fine magazine’s publisher. A few years ago, after an intensely spirited discussion that ended in tears – mostly mine - my Mum and I agreed we would never debate politics again. We’ve always been able to talk about any topic and respect each other’s opinion but weirdly we stood at opposite ends of the political spectrum and that’s where things went south – or left and right, if you will. And I say weirdly because most people inherit their political ideology from their parents. Not this little black sheep. She was a fangirl evangelist in the church of Tony Abbott, and apart from Fraser Anning there’s not a politician in this country I think less of. When He declared ‘coal is good for humanity’ I suspect Mum went out and bought bags of the stuff - to bathe in, cook with, sprinkle around the garden and maybe drop a little lump into her chamomile tea. The leaders I’m attracted to have a social and environmental conscience, two things I suspect the former PM had surgically removed at circumcision. If you’re still reading, I’ll come back to this part of the story later.
Recently in Cairns and around the world students exercised their democratic right to assemble in protest of climate change inaction and the subsequent slap down from our government, older generations and social media was intense and quite frankly for mine, infuriating. Reflecting on it now, I can feel the heat rising in my body - not a coal powered heat - but a human powered renewable energy that I will keep generating in support of our kids, who believe it or not, are passionate about the future of this planet. ‘How many would have turned up if it was held on a Saturday’ was the cry from the outraged who dismissed this action as an opportunity to ‘wag’ school for a whole two hours on a Friday morning – which, completely misses the point! Many vital industries strike at Christmas for a reason; to create disruption and noise to get their message heard. ‘It’s damaging their education’ was another theme - our kids education doesn’t start and stop in a classroom, hats off to parents who take their kids out of school for 6 months to travel around Australia – so please stop sooking about two hours outside the curriculum. There was also a post on social media, written by an idiot, and liked/shared by many more that starts with an own goal – ‘You are the first generation to require
air-conditioning in schools’ – could be a good reason for that? And it ends with ‘you are selfish, badly educated, virtue signalling little turds… wake up, grow up and shut up’. Wow! One woman, clearly stuck in the 1950’s, posted ‘children should be seen and not heard’. The way these entitled old sheep belittle and underestimate our kids really gets my goat. Back to Mum. She’s just turned 73 so she’s held her rusted on political views for decades and late last year we had another incident that once again ended in tears – and this time they were all mine. On an overcast and drizzly Saturday morning I watched her standing waist deep in water in the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon, with her grandchildren on either side of her, proudly holding a ‘Stop Adani’ placard above her head at a Save the Reef rally. Extraordinary. The climate’s not the only thing that’s changing. To my Mum, my wife, my children and the students of Far North Queensland I thank you for standing up for what you believe in - and encouraging and inspiring me to do the same. To our former PM, coal is not good for humanity – humans who protect the planet that sustains humanity, is good for humanity.

What’s on
IN CAIRNS HAYLEY GILLESPIE
After a hot wet summer we will hopefully get to enjoy the outdoors more with autumn here at last. TANKS Returning to us are the fabulous Tanks markets from 9am to 2 pm on the last Sunday of every month from April to November. If you love ‘Hand made’ this this is a great way to purchase a piece of art for you home and you often get to meet the maker! You will be supporting the arts and local business as well as owning a unique thoughtfully created piece. While you are there you can take a gander through Tank 4 at Artists of the North, Cairns Art Society exhibition. Gathering its members and other artists from North Queensland, in one of the largest local group exhibitions in the Cairns cultural calendar, Cairns Art Society presents their annual, Artists of the North exhibition. This year’s theme is ‘Free as a breeze’. MAKIN WHOOPEE Talking of Markets,
Whoopee is venturing out from their Shields Street store and into the suburbs with the return of their Makers Markets at Edge Hill State School on Pease street, Cairns.
now in its second year and offers you an opportunity to come together with people of your own age to learn and share artistic skills and best of all to brainstorm ideas.
This event will showcase the talents and products of approximately 30 small businesses and artisans who have been hand picked by the Makin’ Whoopee Team. The Whoopsters will make sure that there's something for everyone; jewellery, candles, flowers, artworks and more! All handmade, Australian made and in most cases made right in here in Cairns! Held right before Mothers day, PERFECT!
A special feature of this year’s program is a project that combines art and business where you will work together to design, develop and make a product for sale. This will involve making a prototype, cost it to go to market, and then present your concept to a panel for feedback before completing it to sell to Christmas shoppers.
CAIRNS ART GALLERY The Young Creatives Club If you are between 13 and 17 years old you can become a member of the Gallery Young Creatives Club that is held on alternative Makin’ Saturdays from 3pm to 5pm. It is
During the year Young Creatives will also design and host a drop-in children’s workshop where you will learn about teaching, entertaining and working with younger children. These skills will assist you if you decide to study and make a career in art.

In a world where technology is king, it’s no wonder that cyber security is becoming a strategic imperative for organisations. However, given the sector’s evident gender disparity, its exponential growth has resulted in a skills shortage. Data indicates women represent just 11 per cent of the Asia-Pacific cyber security workforce, and with Australia expected to need up to 17,600 additional cyber security workers by 2026, the time to tap into the female labour pool has never been more crucial. As a result, the Australian Government has made a commitment to scale existing efforts to promote cyber security as a career for women, and tech organisations and universities are accelerating efforts to ensure women see tech and security as a viable career pathway. Recently, Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), Mike Burgess, spoke about their push to attract a wider range of people to help with their offensive cyber mission. Australia Cyber Security Centre (ACSC, part of ASD) Assistant Director of Careers, Pathways and Inclusion, Amy Roberts, said the ACSC led a number of programs and initiatives that promoted cybersecurity as a career for women of all disciplines. “Women bring different perspectives, ways of thinking and skills to the sector, in both a technical and non-technical capacity. Cyber
security is not just Information Technology - it also includes business, risk, operations and resource management,” Ms Roberts said. “To help try and shift this culture, ACSC offers a mentoring program to female competitors of the Government’s Cyber Security Challenge Australia (CySCA), an annual ‘hacking’ competition which is open to all full-time Australian university undergraduate and undergraduate-equivalent TAFE students.”
Women in Cyber Mentoring Event (WICME). “The event, an initiative that came out of the Australian Government’s Cyber Security Strategy, provided me with networking and mentoring channels, and attracted women from different employment backgrounds and of all ages,” Ms Rickard said.
“I have a television and telecommunication background, and a passion for network security, so it was surprising to see women with business, communications, Cairns-based CQUniversity ICT marketing and law qualifications in Discipline Lead and Senior attendance. A thought provoking play Warning: Strong Language
26 APRIL to 04 MAY 2019 1300 855 835
The Rondo Stage is set to air some fresh young talent with this production. Half the cast consists of teenagers, Jordy-Mae Constant ( 15 yr old ) as Carmen, Josiane Blackburn ( 17 yr old ) as Jenna - Carmen's chatroom soul-mate and Carmen's brother Tom played by Alexander Swanston ( 17 yr old ). All these actors are a product of a new wave of Youth Theatre training in Cairnsbringing their vitality and experience to this thought provoking script. The teenagers perform alongside some familiar Rondo faces, Mark Chivers as Carmen's absent father, Trish Hill as Carmen's now single Mum and Matt O'Connor as Carmen's mystery visitor in the ChatRoom. The ChatRoom is variously... tender, fraught, confronting and gripping as the family dynamics play out around Carmen's ChatRoom liaisons. This play is essential viewing for parents and their mid-teenage children and should not be missed by theatre-goers who like to be challenged.

IT TAKES A FORMIDABLE TEAM TO RAISE A FAIR
WORDS Pip Miller IMAGES Cairns Indigenous Art Fair
Australia’s premier art fair is also Queensland’s quintessential celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture. With the milestone celebration little more than two months away, the small but very passionate and dynamic team are working hard and fast behind the scenes to ensure this year’s event is one to be remembered. From their open plan office in the city, this predominantly female cohort is a force to be reckoned with. Each year this talented crew pulls out the stops, attracting up to 50,000 visitors from near and far to observe the state’s rich diversity of two distinct cultures in one extraordinary location. Now, let’s meet the team…
JANINA HARDING
After hitting the ground running in February 2015 Janina Harding has been the artistic director of CIAF – a responsibility she says doesn’t feel much like work but describes as “lots of meetings, writing and research”. Janina is a Torres Strait Islander woman whose mother, Eleanor Harding (Adelaide Hain) was the last of her siblings to leave Erub Island. “Mum raised me and my six siblings in Melbourne however we always knew that Erub was our homeland.” Asking Janina to choose her favourite part of CIAF is like asking a parent to choose her favourite child however is quick to answer. “It is when I get to have my own preview of the art fair and come across artists standing strong and proud in their space. I can't wait to see and hear their response to this year's theme My Yarn Now. ”But what I love the most, is hanging out with artists, either in their studio or on their Country. I will always
treasure those moments, and remember those yarns.” Janina says her advice for first timers to CIAF is to start squirreling away their pennies now. “Don’t be caught out because you are bound to find a ‘must have’ piece. And to keep up with an action-packed program, I recommend drinking plenty of water during the day and having a good night’s rest.” For Janina, the theme, My Yarn Now, is time for the nation “to be quiet and listen”. Something that most people don’t know about you? “My nickname at High School was Punk. I used bring my Sex Pistols and Clash albums to the school gym and thrash around at lunchtime.” If you weren’t at CIAF what would you be doing? “Wishing I was at CIAF…”
VANESSA GILLEN
From interactions with exhibiting artists to securing sponsorships, marketing, publicizing and organizing each and every event on the program, Vanessa Gillen’s role as General Manager, is as the title implies, extensive. Calm under fire, Vanessa approaches every task with a focus that is results-driven and importantly, for the benefit of CIAF and its stakeholders. With a background in media, marketing, film production, and of course, the arts, Vanessa brings a breadth of experience to the table and like all of her colleagues, exudes passion as she goes about the day to day. Before joining CIAF Vanessa managed Yarrabah Arts Centre for three years which she says has greatly benefited her current role and ability to see the event from an artists perspective. For Vanessa, CIAF is special because of Cairns’ beautiful environment and the
amazing people involved, along with the fact it brings two unique Indigenous cultures to the fore. “Queensland art and culture is still a new experience for most Australians, so having the opportunity to immerse yourself in one event and view the art, hear music, see traditional and contemporary dance, experience locally made food and learn through hands on workshops with artists is a one-stop shop of cultural immersion for our visitors. “The most amazing thing about CIAF is the atmosphere - I have never been to an event that has such a happy, inclusive vibe where everyone comes together as one.” Something that most people don’t know about you? I worked for England’s former PM Margaret Thatcher as her personal aide when I was backpacking around the world.

Master Builders Australia is calling for more women to pursue careers in the building and construction industry. As the only national voice representing all sectors of the industry, Master Builders is responsible for promoting the interests of its 32,000 members and Australia's $200 billion building and construction industry. And with women like Sharon Vella from the Far North Queensland arm of this national body living by example, the industry is in excellent hands. “As the daughter of a builder, I’ve been in and around construction my whole life,” says Sharon. “There’s something truly exciting about seeing designs can come to life, and how quickly they can quite literally come out of the ground. Working in construction makes you feel very valuable in a society. You’re working in a job that you know can change people’s quality of life. You feel proud doing this job.” A BOYS CLUB NO MORE As the Regional Manager for Master Builders Far North Queensland, Sharon’s role is an extremely important one, and covers a variety of roles from educator to facilitator, business coach and mentor. “Master Builders Queensland is the industry body that helps all members, which is everyone in the construction industry. We help with the technical side of business management, especially the small to medium-sized businesses. Master Builders Queensland have an inexhaustive list of expert advisors in fields including contractual obligations, legislation, technical advice, dispute resolution and work place health and safety. “We provide education sessions on
exactly what businesses need to do to succeed, help with problem solving, or assist in training for the next stage of their business development. Training is a huge part of what Master Builders offers, to continually keep business growing and look after all people. “The concept of construction being a boy’s club is one that we have worked hard to eliminate. Yes, of course it’s a male dominated industry, however speaking from experience I can only say how well I’ve been received, and how well I see other women being treated within the industry. There are women in every element of construction, including concreters, tilers, builders and engineers.” “When you start to look closely and see the rising numbers of women in particular roles, it’s really encouraging. There’s quite a high number of female electricians, and one of our clients has said the best concreter they had was a female mature aged apprentice. Having just one woman on the team brings a unified force.” Minister for Jobs and Industrial Relations and Minister for Women, the Hon Kelly O’Dwyer MP, announced on International Women’s Day funding of $675,000 for Women Building Australia, a construction industry led program to increase the participation of young women working in the sector. “By introducing more Australian girls to the industry, and supporting Australian women already in the industry, we can build a great future for women working in building and construction,” said Minister O’Dwyer in her speech. “Whilst the sector has traditionally been male
dominated, statistics have shown that women working in the building and construction industry leads to better business performance and workplace morale, and a decrease in mental illness rates.” MATES IN CONSTRUCTION Sadly, the dark side of the construction industry is its notoriety for poor mental health outcomes among the workforce. Suicides, rather than workplace accidents, are the leading cause of death among males aged 25 to 44, with someone taking their life every second day according to the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention. Mates in Construction, a national suicide prevention program, was set up to try and reduce these devastating statistics. “Master Builders care about businesses holistically, which is why we work closely with Mates In Construction,” explains Sharon. “Quite a lot of construction businesses are still the mum-and-dad operators with huge responsibilities the legislation, wages, tax and safety considerations are endless. A business might have received a fine or they may have to install a roof in 40C heat, or for example most recently having to come to the assistance of people involved in the Townsville floods – they still need to work, just to put food on the table. We are always looking out for these people in particular to make sure they are okay. “We listen to what they say, what the issues are, and point them in the right direction for further assistance. We aren’t counsellors, but sometimes it’s good just to have people to talk to.” All in a day’s work.

WHY CHOOSE A MORTGAGE BROKER? There’s been a lot of discussions around the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry, which concluded on 4 February this year when The Commissioner, the Honourable Kenneth Madison Hayne AC QC, submitted his final report to the Governor-General. After more than 13 months of investigation and consideration, the recommendations on mortgage brokers represent a huge win for the Big Four banks. Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia CEO, Mike Felton said these recommendations did not represent a good outcome for consumers. A new report, ‘The Value of Mortgage Broking’, released July 2018 by Deloitte Access Economics, has found that mortgage brokers increase competition and choice for customers, which brings a swag of benefits to the consumer, and the larger economy. Mortgage brokers began emerging in Australia in the mid-1980s, and now 55.7 per cent of loans are arranged by brokers. “Mortgage brokers arranged an estimated $197 billion of new residential home loans in Australia for the year to September 2017,” states the report. As you’d imagine, this contributes significantly to the Australian economy. $2.9 billion is the estimated figure. There’s no doubt that more people are using mortgage brokers now than ever before. But why?
Brokers increase competition More brokers in the market works in the consumer’s favour because there is more competition, and therefore better financial outcomes for customers. A mortgage broker is interested in matching the customer with the most appropriate loan product, rather than working on behalf of a specific bank. This means a broker looks at large cross-section of loan products on the market. The broker will assess competitive rates, and suitable terms for the customer. It’s therefore in the lenders’ interest to provide competitive rates and a greater range of products. While big banks still offer the majority of residential home loans, smaller lenders and foreign lenders are also competitive in the market. “Around 28 per cent of home loans arranged by mortgage brokers in the September quarter 2017 were for lenders other than the four major banks and their affiliates,” states the Deloitte report. Assistant Treasurer at the time, Kelly O’Dwyer, said: “The government recognises that mortgage brokers play an important role with more than half of all home loans originated by brokers and 26 per cent of these loans written to non-major lenders, compared to only 12 per cent of loans written outside the broker channel.” Brokers increase choice The Deloitte report found that one of the advantages of using a
mortgage broker was that customers were able to choose products that suited their specific needs. Whether customers are regional, self-employed, permanently employed, or paying off a loan with a family member, a broker can assess the market, and find the most competitive option. Consumers have choices about whom to borrow from, what type of product to use, and how the repayment schedule will play out. More choice can even lead to consumer savings. A study by Damen & Buyst (2016) in Europe showed that “a borrower who shops for five mortgage offers is able to save, on average, at least €7,078 over the life of the mortgage.” Brokers help increase consumer confidence In addition, the Deloitte report found that sitting down face-to-face with a broker helps customers improve financial literacy and make positive financial decisions. It also helps customers better understand their obligations. With regulations tightening in the financial sector due to increased scrutiny from regulators, it’s more important than ever for consumers to get help navigating the minefield of lender policy and loan product changes.

14 March 2019 - Young Entrepreneurs Breakfast with Ms Chelsea Phillips Backing up a week later, we held another Student Breakfast for our budding Young Entrepreneurs. This event was proudly sponsored by TheSpace. We had 160 students in attendance and our presenter was Ms Chelsea Phillips from the Queensland University of Technology. This breakfast had a different flavour - this is more about preparing students to develop enterprise skills, which are highly sought after by the entrepreneurial industry at present. At 22 Ms Phillips has a long list of achievements and the students hung on her every word as she shared her personal story, one of success and failure, being a young entrepreneur. Without these valuable experiences she would not have the skills and knowledge that she has today. Ms Phillips was transparent and refreshingly honest when it came to her experiences, in preparing the students for the challenging world of being an entrepreneur. She encouraged them to take every opportunity that they are offered, ride the wave and don’t be afraid to let your ideas/products evolve as your business grows. Ms Phillips said, “If you fall down - get up, if you fail - try again.” “If you want to be a successful in any career, you have to have GRIT!” If you have a brilliant idea but don’t know what the next step is, contact Christine or Troy at TheSpace or visit their website for more information.

A Single TOUCH... ACCOUNTANT CHARISSE RUSSELL Director For those business owners that are doings things manually; the thought of another compliance requirement by the ATO (Australian Taxation Office) generally feels like a never-ending cycle. If you don’t know already, the ATO require all business owners to be registered for “single touch payroll” effective 1 July 2019. This means that even if you have one employee or five or less than twenty, you are now required to automate your process through the “STP” system. Single touch payroll (STP) isn’t something to be feared. Simply put, your payroll information is being sent to the ATO on a regular basis as oppose to sending them the information once a year. Every time you process a pay run, whether that be weekly or fortnightly etc you “push” the information to the ATO automatically.
There are a few accounting systems If I can offer you one advice relating to available today that can assist with this the STP; and that is don’t leave it to the last minute.
