We are family! At Home With … Joe Vella At Work With … Lesley Van Staveren
e e r F Celebrating life in Tropical North Queensland
Publisher’s Note “We Are Family”: Sister Sledge
Families, hey!? What would we do without them? A constant source of love, support, frustration, entertainment, and, often, embarrassment. Especially that time in 1986 when your mum picked you up from the Blue Light Disco wearing a polyester nightie. Like, actually walked inside to collect you! Families are generally an absurdly eclectic mix of conservative, liberal, wacky, average, frugal, generous, outrageous and passive folk who, except for genetics, would probably never choose to know one another. What binds us, however, are the experiences we share. In this issue, we are celebrating families - including paying tribute to our gorgeous Dad’s on Fathers Day. We have a chat with local business leader and humanitarian, Joe Vella, about his work with the Make A Wish Foundation. And we’re off to work with Lesley Van Staveren, of FNQ Plastics, as they prepare to revolutionise the Cairns recycling market. The subject of our cover story is Chris Durie, building designer, devoted husband and father-of-five, who is working to design smarter buildings for our climate. We also catch up with Chris Wiles about his fundraising efforts for Muscular Dystrophy, and local lad, Allan Hardy, who has gone next level with extreme adventure. Oasis Magazine is delighted to be supporting The Cairns Tropical Writers Festival on 12-14 August; The Ukelele Festival, The Ride for Muscular Dystrophy on August 28th, as well as The Power Of Pallets Charity Auction on October 29th. There’s plenty going on in our gorgeous city over the next few months. I encourage you to embrace it - all of it - and savour all the beauty this gorgeous town offers up. And I couldn’t sign off without giving a shout out to Oasis Mag’s inaugural work experience supremo. Isabella, from St Monica’s joined us in July, and what a gem she is! The future’s looking secure with this calibre of person entering the workforce.

Mother Of Nature! A former boss of mine used to bang on about the 5 P’s of breakfast radio; Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. That little nugget of wisdom can be rolled out for any endeavour really, like family camping trips. Every year in the dry season we pack the camper trailer, the kids, the dogs, an
over-bloated Esky and head up into Cape York for a week to disconnect from the internet and reconnect with nature, ourselves and each other. No facilities, no amenities, no people, no worries! But this year was going to be different, this year we were going to be so prepared that for the first time ever I wasn’t, at the end of the day, going head to head with that big red angry ball in the sky. It’s not like the sun’s unpredictable; it’s been disappearing in the same spot at the same time for oh, I don’t know, BILLIONS of years. But this year with proper preparation there will be no race between setting up and a setting sun, we’ll leave at 7am and drive straight through, no stops! We left at 12pm. Only five hours after our ETD. First stop was three minutes into the journey at Brinsmead Mobil, trailer tyres needed air. Second stop Smithfield shopping centre, forgot towels.
Third stop Smithfield Macca’s, kids were starving. Fourth stop Koah roadhouse, needed fuel. Fifth stop Mareeba Coles, left meat in freezer. Sixth stop Lakeland Downs roadhouse, forgot milk. Seventh stop Laura general store, ice had melted due to frequent stoppages. We stopped in at more places than a Seventh Day Adventist on a Sunday morning. On the plus side we arrived just in time to watch the sun set behind the hills. Oh, and we also forgot coffee, which is no big deal, just replaced it with beer. Going off the grid and getting a bit feral with the family is my favourite week of the year, and if you don’t come home with scratches and bruises, you’re doing it wrong. Those little nicks and cuts are earned like scout badges, that sew themselves onto your skin. You’re not a NapiSan poster boy for Mother Nature, so shut up and get dirty.

FOOD VIXEN
GETTING THE PARTY STARTED at Flame I don’t know about you … but I get pretty excited about new and exciting places to eat in Cairns. So when good old social media alerted to me to Bushfire Flame and Grill’s new pop-up restaurant and bar ‘Flame’, I made plans to go that very evening. Located on the street side right in front of Bushfire on the Cairns Esplanade, Flame is serving up tapas plates and bar street bites until the end of September. My handsome “Plus1” and I arrived about 7pm on a Thursday evening and grabbed ourselves a table right in front of the chef, who was busy sizzling away on a large grill (the food, not the chef). With the Rio Olympics almost upon us it would be rude not to partake in one of Brazil’s favourite pastimes – and no, I don’t mean soccer. I followed the waiter’s recommendation to try Brazil’s national cocktail, the Caipirinha. The three ingredients of cachaça, sugar and white rum served over crushed ice, make for quite a yummy concoction - and something that I could surely get used to! Considering that Brazil’s climate is very similar to that of Cairns, it’s no wonder they went down so readily. Turning my focus turned to food, there’s about 10 dishes to try – reasonably priced between $7 and $14. Sharing is the
name of the game at Flame (I made a funny) so we started off with the Smoked Barramundi Bruschetta and Salumi. Barramundi on Bruschetta? How has no one thought of this before? We then moved onto the Twice Cooked Pork Belly Skewers, Empanadilla’s and Calamari Fritti. And then, because we both had a tiny little bit of room left, (and also because I spied it on its way to another table) the Chivito with melted provolone cheese, prosciutto, rocket, roasted capsicum, chimichurri and caramelised onion/tomato/green chilli relish on artisanal bread. The Chivito was almost too good to share. If you’re looking for something classy, but a little more casual, Flame is the place for you! The Olympic party might be just getting started in Rio, but you can have your own party - in your mouth - with the tempting tapas and street bites at Flame. Flame (outside Bushfire Flame and Grill on the Esplanade) is open 5.30pm – 9pm 7 days right through to the end of September. Follow Foodvixen on Facebook and Instagram for more foodie news and reviews!

Welcome to Terror Australis A hot new live art cabaret that slices open the sinister side of Australia. WINNER – John Chataway Innovation Award, Adelaide Fringe 2016.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MORGAN ROBERTS
Coming to CoCA this September for two performances during Cairns Festival, this adults’ only cabaret transports audiences to the Australian Outback, into a world of Ozploitation - a category of low-budget horror, comedy and action films made in Australia after the introduction of the ‘R’ rating in the 1970s . Premiering earlier this year at the 2016 Adelaide Fringe Festival, it has already been dubbed an outright hit. Essentially a deranged outback nightmare, performed by psychosiren Leah Shelton (Polytoxic), Terror Australis is a frothing hot mess of black comedy, anti-burlesque and hills-hoist pole dance. “If you like your goon bags swingin’ from a clothes line and your contemporary cabaret edgier than a serial killer’s machete, then Leah Shelton’s your gal.” wrote Laura Hughes, of The Maggie Journal. “Leah Shelton performed her physical comedy spectacularly, never uttering a word while drawing the audience into the dirty, grungy underbelly of Australian pop culture.” (Hitlist BEST CABARET - Adelaide Advertiser) Shelton’s premiere solo work is a surreal exploration of the paranoia that lies deep within the Australian colonial psyche. True tales of terror
terror australis
collide with pop-culture, jewel-encrusted gore, lip-sync, sweat and beer. Radio Adelaide’s Phoebe Montgomery exclaimed “Leah Shelton delivers an equally erotic and manic performance of the most outrageously Australian burlesque show ever to grace the Adelaide Fringe” Not for the faint of heart or easily offended, Terror Australis is bizarrely entertaining, annihilating boundaries. “Leah Shelton is sensational – sensual, erotic and quite
mad” (Tsunami Magazine) Welcome to Terror Australis … a sunburnt country where cars rule, hitchhiking kills and dingoes eat babies. Down Under, no one can hear you scream and things are never quite as they seem. Tickets $29 for Adults, $24 for Concession. Exclusive Public Showing of the Creative Development Process Limited Tickets Available - 19 AUG 6PM
Doug is Hamlet
JUTE invites the community to come and observe a work-in-progress showing of Doug is Hamlet on the last day of its creative development, August 19th. Come along and see how the creative team have been developing this work and get an insight into our theatre making process.
‘Doug is Hamlet’ is the second project JUTE has undertaken with Doug Robins. The contemporary imagining of this work takes the themes within this play and places the audience in a dystopic world where the indecision of the characters, their inability to recognise their journey towards the grave and their inability to make change to stop the destruction of our world are all brought into play. The scenes developed in the first creative development are funny, ribald, push at political correctness and play with a language that is half way between Shakespeare and Beckett. Indeed, ‘Waiting for Godot’ became a key image of the world we created. The characters fail to notice the rotting fish (something is rotten in the state of Denmark), cannot move, cannot make a decision, cannot make change and are moving inexorably towards the open grave which they fail to notice. It’s an exciting vision for a work that asks an audience – what is the price of inaction, what are the consequences of our actions….To be or not to be? JUTE commissioned the script in 2015 and will undertake a week of creative development in August 2016 to produce the work in early 2017 in Cairns with a tour to Brisbane later that year as part of Access Arts second disability arts festival.
Doug has a unique story to tell on stage. A 26-year-old actor, drama graduate of JCU, Doug is a wheelchair user living with the fatal Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy disease. Average life expectancy of people with this illness is 25.
JUTE has commissioned playwright Kathryn Ash to develop the script that began its life in the initial creative development. The design will be developed for this new work during the creative development making the work ready to be rehearsed and produced in 2017. The design elements are as integral as text and performance elements in this work. As a production company with a track record of 69 new Queensland works and 33 tours, and a loyal regional audience, JUTE has the skills and knowledge to create an extraordinary piece of theatre staring Doug. Central to the artistic concept is the audience response to Doug as a performer. As with ‘Propelled’ the emphasis will be on artistic excellence and quality of performance so people are mesmerized by the story being told: a focus on ability not disability. Event starts at 6pm on 19th August. Tickets are $10 and are available from the JUTE website at jute.com.au. The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Cairns Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

SPEAKER:
Lara Wilde LARA WILDE LOVES THE ROAD
Having grown up in rural and remote Australia, Lara has what many would consider to be a warped sense of what a reasonable road trip is. A 600km round trip for a movie, or a 1400km round trip to dine out at a nice restaurant, or a 1600km round trip to attend a 1 hour meeting... these are all a regular occurrence for Lara. Lara’s passion for road trips is matched by her passion for cars. Over the years, Lara has owned a variety of cars and motorcycles and driven through every state and territory Australia has to offer and most of America. When a single woman heads out and drives a 1972 Chevrolet pickup truck around Australia she is sure to have adventures.
During her travels, Lara noticed that many Australians turned down the opportunity to explore the open road as they found it intimidating. As some one who embraces risk and adventure, Lara was frustrated by the automotive culture that told people they had to belong to the boys club and have a lifted four wheel drive with a winch and half an ARB catalogue before they left the 80 km an hour zone. If you are prepared, patient and just a little bit brave you can drive anywhere in the world. Regardless of if you have a brand new car or a vintage machine, Lara shares her simple tips for a safe road trip giving you a stylish adventure.

Making a Difference
CHRISWILES The world changed for local man, Chris Wiles, when his son, now 10 years old was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.
ge.

T
“He was diagnosed with Becker muscular dystrophy which is an X-linked genetic disorder that slowly and progressively weakens your muscles.
“Interestingly, the largest 5% of charities received 80% of the sector’s total income.”[1 ACNC Commissioner Susan Pascoe AM has said.
Fortunately Becker is one of the less aggressive forms of muscular dystrophy. Some boys are diagnosed with more aggressive forms, like Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Often these boys are in wheelchairs and face severe mobility issues by their early teens. My son is one of the lucky ones.” He said.
“That’s why Ride for Muscular Dystrophy is important. We’re raising money for Muscular Dystrophy Queensland. They’re a small charity that support local families living with the condition. They supply equipment, support and services to the community when there’s often nobody else to help. They’re really at the coal face of the condition. We need to support them so they stay around to support my boy.” Says Chris.
Chris Wiles has been instrumental in creating a strong following for the Cairns Ride for Muscular Dystrophy, a fun 100km community challenge and helped raise $11,457 at last year’s event.
On Sunday, August 28, 2016 Chris and Muscular Dystrophy Queensland are aiming for 40+ cyclists to embark on a
group cycling journey through Cairns and surrounding areas while raising funds for Queensland families living with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular disorders. 100% of these funds will go towards supporting Queensland families living with muscular dystrophy. Everyone is welcome to register and Ride for Muscular Dystrophy on Sunday 28th August. Riders will meet on the Esplanade at 6am for registration before beginning their journey at 7am. An invitation is also open to the general public who would like to come along to the finish and welcome back our dedicated riders and support families living with muscular dystrophy.

Finals Fever
GAME ON
David Arnfield QUEST CORPORATE TRAINING
One of the many attractions of this gorgeous region is the climate, which allows us to get out and enjoy the great outdoors and a fantastic vehicle to be able to do that is through sport. We can easily underestimate the facilities we are blessed with that not only allows our own community to utilise but also attracts elite sports men and women from all parts of the world to our region. As we draw closer to September, the excitement begins to build with finals time for the winter codes.
In Rugby League, we can all remember the amazing ride our own NQ Cowboys took us on last year. The golden point win over the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL Grand Final was one of the most exciting sporting moments I can remember. Wouldn’t it be amazing if they could go back to back! On the local CDRL scene, Innisfail Brothers would have to fall in a massive hole not to hold the shield aloft again. You can see all the CDRL Grand Final action, Saturday, September 24 at Barlow Park, but stay tuned to all the fixtures excitement until then! In AFL, can anyone stop Hawthorn’s run at four AFL premierships in a row? They will, no doubt, go down as one of the
greatest teams in league history. Locally, the AFL competition seems to be a two-club race between Port Douglas and South Cairns, although you can never discount Cairns Saints. Don’t miss all the AFL Grand Final action on Saturday, September 24, at Cazalys Stadium. Cairns very own NPL team, the FNQ FC Heat, has surprised the entire soccer league with their results this year. It would be an amazing accomplishment for Tim Campbell and his boys to go all the way to the Finals in September. So let’s get behind them, Cairns! In Netball, it’s hard to go past the favourites, the Woolshed Cutters, but Cairns Saints or Brothers Leprechauns could also cause an upset. All the excitement of the Netball Grand Finals can be seen at the Martyn Street netball courts, September 13-16. In FNQ Rugby, it looks to be a race between Barron Trinity Bulls and Cairns Northern Beaches. You can catch all the finals action on August 12, at Barlow Park. Good luck to everyone competing in their respective sports finals. It’s an exciting time in sport, and great to see the rewards culminating from a lot of hard work.

People At Home With … JOE VELLA At Work With … LESLEY VAN STAVEREN

oe Vella’s DNA has always been insurance.
Based out of Cairns’ last standing old movie theatre on Mulgrave Road, he has been the proud owner of Joe Vella Insurance brokers (JVIB) for 20 years. Pretty impressive for someone who started their business from their daughter’s bedroom. After brokering his neighbours home insurance policy; he was officially in business! A man of incredibly high moral calibre, Joe approaches all elements of his life in light of the old mantra: ‘Treat others as you would like to be treated.’ In fact, it was a difference in moral views that made Joe quit high his flying insurance job overseas and start from scratch on his own terms. ‘I’d rather be a goldfish in a pond, than a guppy in an ocean’, he states. ‘You need to be your own person and make a difference.’ Despite his status as one of Cairns’ top entrepreneurs, Joe is most happy when playing with his four beautiful grandchildren. They especially like spending their time at Joe’s personal ‘haven’: a lakeside abode on the banks of the stunning Lake Tinaroo.

As an avid gardener and keen golfer, Joe is transforming his lakeside land into a six hole chipping green in amongst a lush botanical garden. As well as the home acting as a future ‘retirement haven’ for Joe, it also acts as a lakeside wonderland for his grandchildren. As I listen to Joe speak so fondly of his grandchildren and how much he enjoys spending time with his entire family, I let out a smile. This is a man who is both caring and inspiring in equal part, and I start to wonder how much of a more wonderful place the world would be if all influential businessmen were like Joe.
‘I’d rather be a goldfish in a pond, than a guppy in an ocean’, he states. ‘You need to be your own person and make a difference.’
‘Make a point of difference in someone else’s life/business and you too will be the benefactor of this” He states. Joe himself is a man that puts a lot of his spare time into charity. He is an honorary member of the Cairns West Rotary Club and has had a passionate input in many charities that help children and young individuals. These include the ‘Make A Wish Foundation’, ‘Steadfast Education’, ‘Hear and Say Foundation’ and ‘Catholic Education For Disadvantaged Youths.’ Although he cherishes all of the charity work, Joe says that ‘The Make A Wish Foundation’ is the one charity that he would struggle to let go of the most. The charity grants a special wish to children who have been diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. In his twenty years working with the ‘Make A Wish Foundation’, Joe recalls one particular wish that was incredibly moving: A five year old boy called Aiden, from New South Wales, who wished to ‘Find Nemo’. Spence street was shut down as a cavalcade of Police vehicles paraded in a spectacle with Aiden to find the clown fish. Aiden was then transported by helicopter to the Outer Barrier Reef where he snorkelled on the corals until he found Nemo. Although the brave boy lost his battle with Neuroblastoma, Joe highlights the sense of drive and sheer joy that this wish gave both Aiden and his parents during this tough time. It is this community focused attitude that

makes Joe Vella one incredibly inspiring man. Alongside his numerous charity involvements, he is also Queensland’s honorary consulate for the board of Malta. Having moved to Australia from Malta when he was just six months old, Joe still speaks Maltese fluently. Although he states that race and religion are always a part of us, ‘life experiences and teachers are who make us who we are.’
‘Make a point of difference in someone else’s life/business and you too will be the benefactor of this” He states. When asked his advice for budding entrepreneurs, he stated: ‘You need to have a passion in whatever you do and believe you have something better to offer
the public. You need to have integrity to the point of difference and be extremely savvy with how businesses need to be manufactured in today’s environment.’ He also highlights the importance of learning from others. ‘Learn to ask for help and find a mentor with credibility and reliability (please please please listen to someone who’s been there and done that).’ All budding business people should treat Joe’s advice as golden, after all, he is an all-round success! However, despite his booming business, Joe keeps a very downto-earth approach to his professional life. ’20 years have gone by far too quickly. One of my greatest achievements is keeping the memories of the old Cairns alive’ Joe’s office is the stunning ‘Vella Plaza’ movie theatre on Mulgrave road, which he restored back to its original glory through reconstruction work in 2008. He recalls the incredible memories this building ignites for some of Cairns’ older residents. One elderly gentleman, upon seeing the movie theatre, stopped in his tracks and smiled. ‘It’s nice to see the old girl with the new dress’. And that’s Joe Vella, always having a positive effect on others.

Claire
Spilling TH One of the most fascinating parts of relationships, is that they are ever evolving, which in turn allows those involved in that relationship the option to also evolve. With Father’s Day on the not too distant horizon, we caught up with three local women to chat about how their relationship has evolved over its life, and about changes that have occured since kids came along. Firstly, tell us about how you met your partner.
Sunny
Annette
32
Sunny: I met my husband when we were at high school in Sydney. We hooked up at University and then moved up here after graduating. We’ve been together for 19 years, and married for ten years, and we have two young daughters. Annette: I met Clay while I was working at the Matson Plaza. We hit it off immediately, and were engaged within 8 months. We’ve been married 11 years and have 6 year old twin boys. Claire: Same with us, it was a work thing. I was a new nurse and Roger used to deliver patients back to me. One day, I saw him swigging on a can of Diet Coke, although to this day he denies that. I asked Roger out on a date, and that was 14 years ago. I had a 3 year old son at the time, and we dated for three years before we moved in together.
What was it about your partner that made you just “know” he was the one?
Claire: Well, obviously, it was the Diet Coke. Although he denies that, so perhaps that rocks the very essence of our relationship. {laughs} No seriously, it was his kindness. He is the kindest person I’ve ever known, and that continues to this day. Annette: He accepted me for who and what I was. I didn’t need to pretend to be someone I wasn’t. Sunny: My husband is all of those things too. He’s kind. He accepted me for who I am. Hmm, perhaps it’s familarity? I’ve been with him for more than half my life. We have grown up together. There’s a real comfort in that.
| w w w. o a s i s m a g a z i n e . c o m . a u
Tell us about your wedding.
Sunny: We had two! One in Sydney and one in Singapore, which we had absolutely no control over. It was massive and my father-in-law held no stops! It really was a show! There was even karaoke when my husband sang “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” and there was a hideous fake cake! Annette: We had a fake cake too! Except as we were eating the cake, my father looked over to where we had just cut the cake, and said “Well, if that’s the cake, what are we eating?” The caterers had forgotten to take the cake away before serving it! My wedding was the opposite of me. It was quiet. Claire: We’re not married, although we have the mortgage and the kids. The defacto thing was never an issue until our 6 year old son recently found out. It has confused him a bit.
How has life changed between then and now? How has having kids changed you?
Sunny: It’s busy. So busy. Annette: And it’s not about us anymore. I mean, him and I. Now, it’s all about the kids. Sunny: Oh and the weight gain! I’ve put on about 10kgs since our wedding. Annette: I was the opposite. I was the heaviest I’ve ever been when I got married and then I actually lost 47kg before I fell pregnant. Sunny: I look back on photos and think “Wow”. Claire: We don’t appreciate it, do we? We always think at the time that we are not quite good enough, until we look back on photos and go “Ah yeah, that was enough!” I’m still holding onto my old jeans. Every now and then, I lock the bedroom door and take some time to

reaquaint yourself with your pre-kids jeans. {Everyone laughs} Claire: But you MUST make sure the door is locked. You don’t want anyone walking in. It’s that unspoken thing, he doesn’t acknowledge the weight you’ve put on, because he loves all the curves. But if he walks in, and you’re horizontal on the bed, struggling trying to pull your jeans over your bum, well, that’s just awkward! {more laughs} Sunny: Your priorites change as well. Sleepins used to be an expectation. That’s a thing of the past now! Annette: And money is definitely tighter. Shopping used to involve looking at pretty things. Now, you just shop for a bargain! Claire: Okay - I’m going to get a bit soppy here, and say that I actually love my partner more now, watching him be a father, than I did when it was just two of us. Don’t get me wrong, I liked him before. But watching him with the boys has taken things next level. There are some couples who struggle when partners come along. I’ve been really lucky that mine exceeded every expectation. I wasn’t expecting that, and I’m really glad it happened. Annette: I love the alone time too! Claire: Oh yeah - alone time! I actually have my own couch! The boys have their couch, and then there’s
the Mum couch, and only I am allowed to be on it!
What will your 2026 look like for you and your family?
Claire: Okay - 2026, I’ve got an 11 year old, a 16 year old and a I will have finished my law degree, and have started on my second career, as so commonly happens when women have children. And fingers crossed, there will be a cure for Type 1 Diabetes so my son will be able to live an easier life. And hopefully, more time with friends and family. Right now my life is so consumed with work, after school activites and insulin. I want more time. Annette: In ten years time, I want to be still living in the house I’m currently living in, still working in the job I’m working in, and still married! And I assume I’ll be interviewing potential girlfriends for my sons. {Laughs} But I do want to be invovled in my kids life. Sunny: I don’t think anything will be that different. We will probably just be busier, with even more running around to do after our two daughters. And I’m sure there will be the typical arguments about clothes, boyfriends and how they want more freedom than we give them.

Lesley van Staveren of FNQ Plastics Exciting news is unwrapping: our tropical city has a more sustainable future in sight with a $3.4 million plastics recycling plant set to open next year. Lesley and Col Van Staveren, co-owners of FNQ Plastics, are the driving force behind the initiative, which will provide Cairns with the technology to localise and close our plastics recycling loop. The facility will be capable of processing up to 3,600 tonnes each year and the thing that’s bound to get you pumped about the plant is its capacity to recycle co-mingled plastics, including shopping bags. The average plastic shopping bag is used for about 12 minutes yet takes up to a thousand years to decompose. In Cairns, our Regional Council’s Materials Recovery Facility cannot process plastic bags and so they currently end up in landfill. Reflecting on their own use of plastic products was where it all started for Lesley and Col. The workshop area at the Mulgrave 34
| w w w. o a s i s m a g a z i n e . c o m . a u
Road premises is a hive of activity and, as Lesley points out the different operations to me, she explains that all their offcuts would be able to be recycled onsite at the new plant. Her enthusiasm is infectious and I want to know what else is fuelling this fire for sustainability; after all, the pair has plenty going on already. Taking on FNQ Plastics back in 2007, the small backstreet business is now one of the largest plastics fabrication outfits in Far North Queensland. The Van Staverens quadrupled their business growth in 5 years – and accelerated their family growth, with 3 kids in less than 3 years. Their children’s future is a big factor in their push for increased environmental accountability. ‘We have a 1, 2 and 4-year-old at home. Creating a sustainable future for our kids is important to us. We want this to be a nice place for them to live,’ Lesley says. ‘We’ve got waste products that are going to landfill and creating emissions. That worries us. We’re not doing enough to look after the place and we believe there needs to
be movement on it,’ said Col. Through family connections they were exposed to patented technology from Newtecpoly Pty Ltd that can essentially close the loop on what is usually a long, complex journey for plastics recyclables. Once sorted, plastic recyclables from Cairns are trucked down to Brisbane for processing: they are chopped down, washed, drained and processed into extrudable beads and then transported elsewhere to be melted down and moulded into finished
product. ‘Right now, there’s no recycled goods produced up here,’ Lesley says. She hands me a garden plank that is made of 100 per cent plastic bags, produced by a southern supplier. The plank represents plastic bags that didn’t end up in landfill. Yet when we buy recycled goods like these, we are buying goods that have been transported back to us after we’ve sent our unprocessed plastic 1100km south. ‘It doesn’t make sense, it can really be done a lot better!’ says Lesley.
The machinery that would be used in the new plant can literally take all types of co-mingled plastic: manufacturing waste, household and post-consumer plastics, agricultural and more. Not only that, the machinery and technology can handle up to 10 per cent spoiling, maximising energy efficiency and cutting out the need for all of those other cleaning processes before melting and moulding. Upon investigating the process, Lesley and Col knew it deserved attention. ‘We said “Awesome, we’ve got to bring this to Cairns!’” They believed it was something that could gain traction and, judging by conversations so far, community feedback is positive and investor support promising. I share the enthusiasm for the end-to-end process that will keep recycling local and cost effective. I ask what it would look like in practice. ‘Take banana farms,’ says Lesley, ‘and think about all the bags used to cover the bunches of bananas. Farmers are looking for an outlet to get rid of them. Instead of going to
landfill we can take all of those bags, melt them down and turn them into plastic stakes that can be used to carry the bananas. You’re enabling people to be part of closing the recycling loop.’ Not only is it practical, the products look good aesthetically. I see a raised garden bed that I wouldn’t mind in my backyard and I wonder if I could afford it. The plank I handled earlier from the plant down south retails for $100. Sure, it’s not quite a rustic railway sleeper, but looks-wise it’s actually not far off. Lesley says I will be able to pick up a local version for about half that price. ‘We want it to be a quality product and we can do it at a competitive price.’ A logo will be created that identifies if a particular product or business has been part of the local, closed loop recycling process. Just like the Australian Made label on your clothing or FSC paper certification on your latest novel, Col envisions a unique logo that will indicate a 100% Cairns recycled product or service. The coming months will be busy for the FNQ Plastics pair. There are logistics of collection and sorting points to confirm, investment and finances to finalise and, of course, everything else plastics is business-as-usual.
‘We want it to be a quality product and we can do it at a competitive price.’
Community momentum and buy-in is really important for this venture: Lesley and Col need our support with public education and awareness. They remind me, ‘We can all be more conscious of what we’re doing by thinking about what we use, where it’s coming from and what we do with it when we’re done.’ Check out FNQ Plastics’ Facebook page for the latest updates and prepare to help make our tropical paradise a greener north! You may not recognize his face, but you’ll recognize his work. Local export, Allan Hardy has taken adventure, adrenaline and sports action to new heights, and there’s no sign he’s slowing down. Working with some of the biggest brands on the planet, such as Red Bull, Nike, G-Shock, MTV, Warner Brothers Movie World and Milwaukee, Allan delivers a combination of TV commercials, documentaries, and music videos that will blow your mind. And they travel to four corners of the earth to do it. When I asked the talented Director/Producer about some of the major highlights from his impressive career, he revealed that the year he spent with Bliss n Eso directing their creative aspects, album covers, music videos, live show visuals, documentaries, and touring the world with them was unforgettably cool. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Allan divulged how setting up bank robberies, blowing up cars and racing bikes around the streets are all part of a days work, made evident when he collaborated with Red Bull to re-create the original BMX Bandits film. If that’s not impressive enough, Allan is now focused on his next project involving ‘the perfect mix of crazy action and insane locations, combined with a big budget and international audience’. While he’s keeping the specifics under wraps for now, he did label it as the biggest production of his life. Allan describes his life as a ‘slightly unbalanced mess a lot of the time’ having to juggle the responsibility of running a business, while directing and creating the productions, developing new opportunities and trying to keep enough time to spend with his family. “Throw in the odd filming trip to Japan, USA or outback Australia and you end up with quite a jumble”, he comically added. While he admits he doesn’t visit his hometown nearly enough, his inspiration stems from its beauty and adventure, along with locals who carved out their own paths like Glen Jacobs, pivotal in the Australian mountain bike scene. “Cairns is a very special place to grow up, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” he proudly states. There’s no doubt that Allan’s success has come from hard work and dedication, but he also puts it down to not being afraid to put yourself out there. “Do heaps of work experience, get a job to pay the rent but keep working on your passion afterhours, travel the world and experience as much as you can and finally, create your own opportunities”. Seems like pretty good advice to me. Words: Liz Yelaska Images: Supplied

Chris and his wife, Ros, moved from Perth over nine years ago in order to be closer to family. The warm, energetic couple have a love for their adopted city and the lifestyle it offers, although Ros tells me with a smile that they’re not considered ‘locals’ quite yet.
These parents-of-five have watched Cairns change dramatically in the time they’ve been here, becoming ever more cosmopolitan, whilst keeping a unique tropical style. Chris’s company, KiiOS, is in full flight, built on an environmentally conscious ethos and a strong belief that buildings and plants must be designed together; their effect on each other be understood. ‘It’s the way it has to go. We can’t keep using resources the way we have, or building the way we do. We have to start
planning for the future, now.’ ‘There are a lot of brick boxes out there that don’t catch the breeze’. It may be economical in the shorter term, but he does not believe it’s the best way to build for the future. The Durie’s previous house, in Redlynch valley was designed by Chris and, in two years, the airconditioning was turned on just three times. Understanding a site’s wind patterns, vegetation and sun exposure means a building can be designed to maximise natural energy characteristics.
This way of designing is nothing new, says Chris, but he feels that it is underutilised in Cairns. He describes investing in it as taking a leap of faith and, firmly believes it will gain momentum here. So, I want to know, what does the future look like with this kind of investment? For Chris, it looks like vertical and rooftop gardens. ‘Put the right plants in and you’ll get the right outcomes. Energy ratings will go up, maintenance will go down: you will have a much more comfortable house.’

HAIR
KRISTY BLACKHURST HAIR ENVY BY KRISTY
Down to the Nitty Gritty Do not assume that your child’s hair and hair care is any less important than your own. Let’s talk about the things that aren’t really talked about. Its time bust the most commonly asked about myths.
Cradle cap: Cradle cap is caused by excessive oil production on your child’s scalp. You will find that it is commonly present in the first 3 months of life and is rare after 12 months. It will generally clear itself up without treatment within the first few weeks of life. Most people believe adding an excessive amount of oil to your child’s scalp is the best way to tackle the cradle cap. I would suggest taking a more gentle approach.
Your child itching at their head is generally a good indicator. Head lice particularly like to hang out behind the ears and towards the back of the neck. Head lice cannot jump or fly. They can only spread from head-tohead contact. Getting rid of head lice is a huge process that takes time, you must have the right tools on hand, and use a reputable brand.
Instead try massaging the scalp with a small amount of baby oil, lightly lifting the cradle cap with a soft brush then washing the scalp with a face washer in warm water washing the crusts away.
It’s commonly believed that Changing your sheets and pillowcases will lessen the likelihood of re-infection. But rarely do headlice leave their life source (the scalp) for anything other than to transfer to another life source.
Head lice: I know, right! The word alone is enough to make you itch. No sooner does the school term go back than the first note gets sent home from school. Dirty hair; clean hair; child; adult. Head lice do not discriminate! As long as you have a scalp for these bloodsuckers to provide warmth to live and breed their eggs, these little guys
m 46

are set to invade! Head lice is a common problem that cannot be stopped. We need to turn to our schools and parents to keep a constant watch and to keep us well informed.
Your going to cringe but you’re just clearing their dirty droppings away…. GROSS!!! Once head lice are away from its life source, you can expect them to die within 8-24 hours untreated. Once treated check your child’s hair daily to avoid re-infection. Also - please - let your child’s daycare centre or school know.

We specialise in a range of anti aging and preventative treatments, and so all ages and genders are catered for in the clinic.”
At any given time it is not unusual for friends or family members to come in together, particularly if there is a special occasion, like a wedding or birthday. “Weddings are all about the bride of course, and we love to ensure she looks and feels incredible on her big day. We also want the mother of the bride and groom to look radiant, so it is an honour to be a part of their celebration.” Increasingly men of all ages are seeking better health, higher energy levels, with a desire to retain and restore youthful looking skin. Face Today also offers treatment and skincare for teenagers suffering from acne as well as providing advice on nutrition and how to age with wellness. The Face Today formula for patients’ satisfaction is based on achieving a subtle, natural transformation over time and ensuring the patient understands the ongoing plan for treatment, and is ultimately happy with their results. This approach, along with their passion, creativity and loving care, sees patients returning for years with the Face Today Team counting each and every one of them as precious family. NUTRITION
Dorothy Richmond DOROTHY DIETITIAN
Feed The Man Fish This Father’s Day falls on a Sunday, so it’s the perfect time to cook your favourite man a delicious, nutritious seafood meal.
Dorothy’s Fishy Faves •Citrus cured salmon with horseradish sauce •Warm curried prawns with naan bread and cashew and coriander chutney •Queen fish ceviche with watermelon and finger lime salad. •Steamed salmon with Salsa Verde •Barbecued sardines with preserved lemon and tomato salsa •Tuna nicoise made with quails eggs, kipfler potatoes and white anchovies •Walnut encrusted salmon with mixed beans and dill dressing •Char grilled tuna, radish and cucumber salad with lime and wasabi dressing •Colourful paella with white fish and peas, capsicum and spinach. •Grilled scallops with orange, avocado and green salad •A seafood antipasto with marinated salmon, chargrilled octopus, oysters and ciabatta
Cooking fish is creative and individualised. Recipes can be adapted to be healthy and many traditional, comforting recipes are once again in vogue. Steaming, stir frying, curing, poaching, baking and barbecuing fish are methods with the greatest health benefits. Team with citrus fruit (which complements the flavour of fish) and vegetables, legumes, fresh herbs and nuts (for added antioxidant value.) Seafood is often seen as expensive, but in reality the price per serve is favourable compared to other protein sources such as lamb. Canned fish such as tuna and salmon make great portable working lunches especially when added to salad in a wrap. Fin-fish, crustaceans and molluscs are low in saturated fat and high in protein. Some species are high in vitamin D, calcium and iodine. The particularly beneficial properties of fish lie in the content of omega-3 fatty acids, which protects against many chronic disease conditions. For seafood to be consumed at its
best, it needs to be handled and stored correctly: •Fresh seafood should have a lustrous flesh or skin, smell fresh like the sea and in the case of finfish, the flesh should spring back when touched. •Chiller bags should be used to transport fish home and it should be stored covered in the coldest part of the fridge. If stored at cool temperatures fresh fish can be used within 2 days or where possible on the day. Frozen oily fish should be used with 3 months. •Most importantly fish should never be over cooked. It is cooked when the flesh turns from translucent to opaque. Personal food preferences comes into the degree of cooking. It is better to prepare all the other ingredients in a dish and then give the fish your undivided attention. •For cooking salmon use a heavy bottomed pan and if serving the skin cook skin side first and turn when the skin is crispy and just able to be lifted off the bottom of the pan. Compliment the delicate flavour with a crisp dry white wine, and remember “The world is your oyster”.

What if… there was a product that reduced the risk of dying from heart disease and cancer by more than 50%? A product that played a vital role in the prevention of diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, insomnia, obesity, stress and many other epidemic self-related diseases. A product that made people leaner, stronger, more flexible, alert, confident and more attractive! A product that was strongly associated with having more control over your life? What if… it was becoming better known every single year that the value of the product, while important at every age, becomes more important as men and women advance from their 30’s, to their 40’s, their 50’s, their 60’s, their 70’s, even their 80’s and beyond… What if… children who were introduced to that product found it to be a source of play and pleasure, strength, agility, selfconfidence and self-esteem. Helping with the ability to compete and co-operate… What if… there was a product that helped create bonds between husbands and wives, parents and children, rich and poor, black and white, so that a commitment to your product often becomes a factor, that united people in love, friendship, business and community… What if… surgeons, generals and top medical practitioners of the world went on record to say that NOT using this product was the equivalent of smoking a packet of cigarettes a day! What if… these claims for that product didn’t come from advertising agencies or sales firms, but, rather, from scientific journals, university laboratories and independent international research that had no vested interest in that industry at all?

And IF all this were true, how much would you pay for this product? What if we could offer this product for less than a cup of coffee a day? What ‘health related catastrophe’ would it take for you to do something about it? Would you stop making excuses and deal with your life head on? Would you need to ‘think about it’ anymore? That’s up to you to decide… But we, as part of the health and fitness industry can offer this product to you. It’s called EXERCISE! It is becoming increasingly common for children to complain of back pain - no doubt a direct result of today’s computer crazed lifestyle. Stooping over a screen for long hours at a time will invariably lead to short term problems and potentially long term damage. Add in a heavy school bag (often carried over one shoulder) and the young, developing back is put under considerable strain. Tips to be back aware: • Discourage your child from sitting on their bed with a laptop to do their homework or play games. Encourage them to get up and move around every 15 minutes whilst studying.

| w w w. o a s i s m a g a z i n e . c o m . a u
Back Pain in Children • Try to minimise the weight of their school bags and encourage them to wear their backpacks over both shoulders. Ideally, a backpack should weigh less than 10% of the child’s weight. • Obesity and poor posture can also lead to back problems, and this fits in with a sedentary lifestyle. Encourage your child to eat nutritious foods and to move move move! • There are some rare and serious causes of back problems, so if your child is complaining of pain, they should be fully investigated by a reputable GP. • Any injury that results in back pain or altered sensation or power in the limbs should be assessed by a medical practitioner immediately. • Any child who is complaining of a fever and back pain should also have immediate medical assessment. Infections within the structure of the back are a rare but significant cause of pain. A spinal tumour, whilst extremely rare, is important to diagnose
early for the best treatment outcome.
Other causes of back pain in children that require medical attention can include structural back problems such as Scoliosis (a sideways curvature in the spine); Spondylosis (a structural defect in the vertebrae); and Scheuermann’s disease (a growth disorder of the vertebrae). Occasionally, children may experience Sciatica (pain radiating into the buttock and leg from a compressed sciatic nerve). General illness like some auto immune conditions, fibromyalgia and viral infections such as influenza can also be a cause of back pain. The vast majority of back problems that children experience can be easily avoided by watching lifestyle factors such as plenty of exercise, cutting right back on junk foods to avoid obesity and ensuring that they have a good posture at all times. STYLING
Jan Warnock JOOSH IT UP
When I get asked to give advice on how to maximise a property’s value, the thing that strikes me is how we all love our own homes. We all have a history in that place and more often than not, that history is on display as mementoes of the lives that live there – family photos scattered around; adored collectibles brought back from destinations far and wide. The second thing that hits me, is we like to follow fashion trends of the time. Suede wall colours, magnificently patterned floor tiles and beige – floors, walls, soft furnishings and décor pieces.
First Impressions Count I’ve stated before that first impressions count. Always! And this is even more important now when most potential buyers have been searching the net to find that property that they love. They will also do a “drive by” to gauge what the neighbourhood looks like. Your property needs to not only stand out, but reflect a lifestyle that will entice the buyer to want to visit your open home. So your property needs to look immaculate from the street. Your photos on line need to really enhance the properties appeal. And the interior must give the impression that it is clean, contemporary, light with no sign of its occupants. This is where a property stylist is invaluable.
JOOSH IT UP All fantastic at the time! Unfortunately when you’re trying to sell your property, this works against you when trying to achieve top dollar.
With the right advice and the correct styling, your property will be that stand out. By using the owner’s own furniture, the cost of styling is kept to a minimum. As a recent client stated “We are so very thankful to Jan for making our home look so beautiful. What a difference her creative eye made to getting the best price for our house. Will definitely recommend Joosh It Up in the future”. - Donna Formosa, Redlynch

The Right Time . .
Many vendors look to sell during this period as there are several factors that fall into place at the same time to represent a very strong market in Cairns. The racing season, the weather and the school holidays attract many interstate visitors and the latest reports show that Cairns is thriving. With our domestic visitors numbers at their highest level since December 2007 and just over 4% lower than the highest levels ever seen.
as a large contender, property experts are predicting confidence will turn into dollars’. Judging by the results I am currently experiencing in the sales market with properties selling sight unseen and for record prices, it is certainly looking like they were right. Cairns is still in the ‘rising market’ phase however there is a stability and confidence in the market I haven’t seen for years.
Our International visitor numbers for the March Quarter 2016 recently released by Tourism Research Australia shows our visitor numbers to the tropical north are up by 11.1%.
There are many variations on how property analysts and local real estate agents are seeing the market. Some say it was having a downturn, whilst others are busier than ever. The real estate market will always have consistency with those owners who are pricing their properties correctly and have a good marketing campaign in place. These owners are seeing results in a great time frame. The interstate and local buyers
According to The Cairns Post (January 2nd 2016): ‘With major projects on the horizon, including new residential highrises C3 Towers and Nova 8, the city’s first aquarium and Aquis still looming
are consistent and the confidence, in my opinion, continues to grow. Some owners are holding on to their properties waiting for the large developers in the market to commence their projects, however, this reduces the supply to the market, meaning and there is less choice for the purchasers. Hence, agents achieve excellent prices as there are less properties to purchase. I have recently sold a house in Mooroobool which had 13 enquires in the first two days, as well as a unit in Cairns North that hadn’t even reached the market and was sold within a day. To me these results show a confident market and with our tourism season coming up, our great weather this time of year and the racing season attracting many visitors to the region, it does represent a great time to sell.

STATUS UPDATE
WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT? When Status Plus first opened its doors 33 years ago, founder Carolyn Balderson had one goal in mind; to bring high performance, long lasting European appliances to Cairns locals. Believing the Cairns market deserved access to a wider range of brands, she sort out agencies for Miele, Gaggenau, Jennair and Bosch. The rapidly growing population responded positively and, as they say, the rest is history. Since that first day, there have been quite a number of additions and changes to the product range at Status Plus, always making sure to keep up with current trends and market demand. Not only do we still sell appliances, but we also sell, stock and showcase a range of Duce timber doors and windows, bathroom products, whitegoods, mosaic tiles, blinds, shutters, and have most recently added a kitchen and

their needs.
“So, what’s all the fuss about?,” you ask.
We still believe in an old world shopping experience and try to greet all clients as they enter the door with a friendly ‘Welcome to Status Plus!’. We truly want to get to know your styles and preferences, so we can help you make the right decisions with your purchases. Most importantly, we want to show you all the hidden gems around the showroom that you may not get to see without one of our ‘showroom tours’.
Ask almost anyone that has stepped foot into our Anderson Street showroom and they will tell you our showroom is definitely one of a kind. While it may look a little deceiving from the street view, once you enter the front doors you can easily get immersed in the displays, which are located over 3 levels. At any given time of day, you may find one of our sales consultants demonstrating an appliance, such as an induction cooktop, or be offered a coffee or glass of water from one of the latest display machines. We believe in having as many display models powered up to show our clients exactly what to expect from their new appliance and make sure they are getting the right product to suit
To top it all off, we have a Best Price Policy giving our clients piece of mind knowing they will get the best price possible. Why not come and see what all the fuss is about yourself? We’re open 6 days a week. 51 Anderson Street, Manunda or online at statusplus.com.au
STRATA PROPERTY KELLY ROBERTS TCM STRATA
Family Business As a Real Estate Agent, Valuer, Property Manager, Strata Manager, Development Consultant and Industry Board Member, I have been lucky enough to play a part in many of the stages of a property’s life cycle. And , as a third generation Property business owner in Cairns, I am constantly amazed at how the demographic of North Queensland’s population impacts on what we manage, but most importantly how we manage. The dynamic of the family unit has changed dramatically over the last fifty years and this has had an unbelievably large impact on the regions demographic. The previous “norm” of a man and wife, two kids, a mortgage and picket fence is now the minority in the landscape of the modern family. The present day family unit presents as varied and textured, and this is reflected in the choices made by families when purchasing or renting property. The enactment of the Family Law Act 1975 resulted in a large increase in divorce rates in Australia and some would say opened the boom gates for diversification of the family dynamic. Increases in divorce resulted in an increase in both couples and childfree singles seeking out smaller, yet more exclusive urban properties. Strata title properties emerged; as a result the idea of
an 800m2 block of land with a three bedroom, one bathroom dwelling was replaced by an increasing vertical landscape. Ever since urban centres have spawned vertically, urban sprawl has creeped into the fringes. The modern family now consists of a more varied makeup of blended families; adult children co-habitating with parent/s, retirees taking on the role of carer to parents and grandchildren, and not to mention the insurgence of pets replacing children in many family units. Such diversity has created great innovation in the fields of design, architecture and building. It has also created change in the way that these properties are managed throughout the life cycle of the property. As the needs of the home occupier change, so does the way in which they are managed by all the stakeholders during the life cycle of the property. Architecture, design and planning teams create new ideas based on the changing market demand, sales agents ensure they match the property with the best fit client, the property manager matches the property to the right tenant, and the Strata Manager manages the process of ensuring all the elements of the building envelope are correctly managed to ensure the asset reaches its potential life.

INTOUCH INSURANCE

Family Matters Family Guarantees With this edition’s focus being family, I thought this would be an opportune time to tell you why I am so passionate about insurance.Thirteen years ago, my beautiful daughter was born with Cerebral Palsy. She is now an awesome teenager, who inspires both myself, and those around her, on a daily basis.
Family guarantees are becoming increasingly popular as buyers scramble to get into the property market for the first time, ‘trade up’ or buy an investment property. Family guarantees offer the means to ‘buy time’.
What this unexpected life journey has taught me is that disability and illness doesn’t discriminate. It can happen to any family, at any time. The other thing that I have learnt is that money gives you options to either improve the chance of survival or the quality of life for the person and the family affected.
The most important step in putting a family guarantee in place is to ensure there is an exit plan – a plan designed to release the guarantors (generally parents) from the loan to fund their child’s home as soon as possible. This is a relief for the guarantor, who doesn’t want the burden of a 30-year loan on their property limiting their options, including the ability to sell their house.
If either my husband or I, or one of our other children, were to become seriously ill, I take peace in knowing that we have substantial insurances in place to provide enough money to give us the best possible treatment available and the best chance of surviving. It will also help us with our everyday bills, so that we don’t have to worry about loss of income from taking time off work. This insurance will allow us to focus on the most important thing in life: Family. I am involved in a lot of fundraising to make sure that my daughter and other children like her have access to the best therapies available locally. This takes a lot of time and energy, and I can guarantee that if I was unwell, the last thing I would want to be doing is organising a sausage sizzle. I see insurance as a way to protect what matters the most. But more than that, it can be the difference between getting a lifesaving treatment in a timeframe that suits your situation, and relying on an already stretched public health system, and fitting into someone else’s schedule. There are so many insurance options available that can be tailored to each family’s individual circumstances. To find out more please contact me on 0419 324 984.
To exit a family guarantee, the child’s home should be revalued down the track to assess the property’s equity, which can be used to release the guarantors. Let’s use the example of a child purchasing a home for $400,000. Generally the property would be revalued in about five years’ time and, assuming it increased in value to $500,000, the child could then get an 80 per cent loan for $400,000 and the parent can be released from the loan. In this example, the child now has enough equity in the property in their own right to not need the guarantee. As a result of the family guarantee, they have saved about $9000 in LMI (Lender’s Mortgage Insurance) on the initial purchase. There are many options available to borrowers when faced with any property purchase decision. The advice and guidance of an experience adviser can be invaluable.

A quiet revolution has begun. Women are changing the face of small business in Far North Queensland and throughout Australia, setting themselves up for an independent and flourishing financial future. More and more women are becoming small business owners. Trailblazing pioneers from Queensland include Sarina Russo, Therese Rein, Cairns’ own Lorna Jane Clarkson, Sass & Bide’s Sarah-Jane Clarke & Heidi Middleton … the list goes on and on. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) represents many of those small business champions. Our own research points to an increasing number of women in small business now. The age old picture of blokes in brickand-mortar buildings is being replaced by women from all walks of life: young and
60
| w w w. o a s i s m a g a z i n e . c o m . a u
Women find more ways to build financial futures single, married with kids; working on their computers at home, setting up a new wave of businesses. Entrepreneurial women are not afraid to start up a business from scratch. They are showcasing their talents, which in some cases have been hidden for far too long. They are the new role models for not just other females, but males too. The path to reaching our potential in terms of economic growth will be forged through the empowerment of women and girls. That is, the fullest possible integration of women into business and our economy. This view has shifted significantly from simply being the “right thing to do” to having undeniable evidence show that it is in fact the smart thing to do. The 2015 Global Gender Gap Report unsurprisingly reveals that where the gender
gap is smaller in a range of areas—including access to education, health survivability, economic participation, and political participation—countries and economies are more competitive and prosperous. The Queensland Government recognises this, with the new Advancing Small Business Queensland strategy underpinned with tactics specifically to support more women business owners. Regardless of gender, if you live here in Far North Queensland and you’ve ever pondered starting your own business but you’re not sure where to turn to, I’m here to help. CCIQ is the not-for-profit peak industry body for business in Queensland, and we’re here purely to power your business potential. Meet KANISHK How did you get into music? I developed an interest in music once I began university. I had a lot of free time and started to mess around with the guitar. At first it was very casual, arranging acoustic covers of my favourite songs. Soon after I started writing originals and learned to express myself through music. What’s the story behind your hit feature track, Trance? Trance was written about a time I was on the train in Melbourne and had a conversation with someone about the book they were reading. After we stopped talking I looked out the window and started daydreaming. When I came back to Earth she’d already hopped off the train. So the song mocks the fact that I tend to zone out too often. Which artists inspire your style? I was quite inspired by Melbourne musician Lakyn. Before I started posting videos on YouTube I watched his clips avidly and in a way that encouraged me to upload my own. I’m a big fan of his ability to make a song his own. What has been your career highlight? Releasing this EP has been the best thing for my music so far. It’s enabled me to reach a wider audience and distribute music that’s more polished than my home recordings. I’ve been stoked with the response I’ve had so far. What does the future hold for your music? In the near future I have a few things planned. I have some gigs in Cairns coming up including the Carnival on Collins, before I tour the east coast in December. I’m also looking forward to getting back into recording covers and originals at home, which I haven’t done since last year. Where do you hope to be in 5 years? In 5 years I hope to still be making, recording and releasing music. I hope that my audience continues to grow and I can share my stories with more people. I’d like to keep playing live and hopefully perform at some Australian folk festivals. Has the Cairns community helped support you as an artist since moving here? Absolutely. Everyone up here has been really supportive and people make a conscious effort to go to each other’s gigs. The network of musicians here are all pushing for you to succeed. 62
