YOU-NIVERSITY

the School of YouTube WARNER'S CORNER DAVE WARNER Star FM

As an accomplished and decorated procrastinator, I burn a lot of daylight loitering on the internet, not lurking – because that sounds creepy – but lazily kicking the metaphorical can around. Like watching a highlights package of the annual cheese rolling competition in Gloucestershire or a 56 minute montage of jets breaking the sound barrier or two hours of controlled building demolitions; it’s called the web for a reason. This world wide web will pick pocket your time before you even know it’s gone but it also gives back in spades - Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the school of YouTube – where you can learn to do anything, without the flamin’ HECS fees. Regardless of age, O.P score or skill level the School of YT will welcome with open arms anyone who wants to have a crack. There’s no dress code, compulsory subjects or detentions and the only time you’ll encounter a bully is if you’re watching how to ride one. If we could be bothered reading we used to have to go out of our way to get instructional advice from say, a self help book or magazine; difference being, for example, YouTube can show you how to have

an amazing orgasm, whereas Woman’s Weekly would tell you how to knit one. I’ve learned how to fillet a fish, build a Billy Kart, pleat a Japanese gyoza, hang a gate and importantly, delete my browser history. A mate of mine, and I don’t recommend anyone do this – like ever, performed a successful emergency caesarian section on his pet guinea pig which he learned at the SYT. The nefarious Mexican drug lord El Chapo only got pinged after the United States D.E.A found ‘How to dig a tunnel with a dessert spoon’ on his browser history. I heard George Colombaris was seen YouTubing ‘How to avoid paying your hard working employees’ in the Green Room at Masterchef. And it’s pretty bloody obvious this year’s gold Logie winner Tom Gleeson spent time at the SYT on ‘How to make a dick of yourself on national television’. So the next time you’re faced with a problem that you think might be out of your league, sign up to the Ivy League School of Youtube. You can’t fail.

at home. “But it was time for a change. And the biggest change is our trading hours. Pacifico is now open for breakfast from 6.30am Tuesday to Saturday, with a new closing time of 10pm.”

For the best part of the 21st century, one local venue has been a staple. So when news emerged earlier this year that the Green Ant Cantina, Cairns 3rd longest running restaurant, was shutting it’s doors, it hit a lot of Cairns locals and tourists right in the feels. The Green Ant was famous for its relaxed atmosphere and genuine hospitality - oh, and *those* chicken wings, of course! Fast forward to October, and I’m doing my happy dance again. The venue’s owner, Troy Birmingham, has reinvented this much loved establishment with the very distinctive facade. Now trading under the name Pacifico, Troy and his team have changed the focus slightly. “We’re still going to be known for our great food, great drinks, and great service. And for a welcoming and creative space that makes you feel

As a huge fan of the Green Ant, I couldn’t wait to try out the new menu at Pacifico, so I grabbed a couple of friends and headed to Bunda Street. The food was, as expected, EPIC! Our table devoured a variety of dishes from the menu, each taste testing the plate beside us. Our order included a melt-in-ya-mouth rump steak sanga, wrapped in sourdough with crispy, brightly coloured salad. Also on our table was some of the freshest salmon I’ve experienced, and a Poke Bowl to keep even the grumpiest vegan nourished. Add to that, a delicious, freshly brewed cafe latte, and - yep - my waistline thanked me when I subtly undid a button on my trousers. Although, I learned later that my button un-doing wasn’t as subtle as I had hoped. The verdict is pretty clear - if you’re after a reasonably priced, generously sized, delicious meal, spectacular service and a relaxed atmosphere, you need to get to 183 Bunda Street, opposite the Cairns Central train station. Just look for the brightly coloured building - you can’t miss it!

HO! HO! HO! Loving locals this Christmas

Hello and welcome to the forthcoming holiday season! No matter how you celebrate Christmas, there are normally gifts to be given. Shopping for the person that has everything they probably need should be special! Three main things I like to look for are: • Keep it local- and keeping money in our own community • Shopping sustainably – this means thinking of the small, handmade producers that have a small footprint on our environment. They also create something that is unique and you will have a direct, positive impact on the person you bought if from, as well as the person you give it to. Make sure your gift is made with love as well as given with love. MAKIN’ WHOOPEE Makin’ Whoopee is venturing out from their Shields Street store and into the suburbs with the return of their Makers Markets at Edge Hill State School on Pease Street, Cairns. The Makin' Whoopee Curated Makers Markets Christmas 2019, from 9am-2pm on Saturday, November 16th, in the big green shed at Edge Hill State School. This event showcases the talents and products of approximately 35 small businesses and artisans who have been hand picked by the Makin’ Whoopee Team. There's something for everyone; jewellery,

candles, flowers, artworks and more! All these gifts are handmade, Australian made and (in most cases) made right in here in Cairns! You will also be able to buy handmade snacks and other delicious bites to eat, whilst listening to live tunes throughout the day. COCO LOCO Coco Loco presents Tutti Frutti from 3pm to 10pm on Saturday, November 30th at Laneway Green (Motel Nomad) Please note, this is a ticketed event! Chica Chica Boom!!! After the huge success of the first two Coco Loco events in 2017 & 2018, this is a one night only art + music + performance extravaganza celebrating all things local, loco, tropical and fruity! Some of the amazing artists featured include Andrea Huelin, Caroline Mudge, Felicity Bury, Grace LillianLee, Hayley Gillespie (oh, that's me!), India Collins, Laila Whiteing, Malachi Aird, Ricky Beresford, Serena Kuring. You'll be entertained throughout the evening by some fantastic doctors of the turntables like DJ Bart, Cameron Kennedy, Concierj, DJ Debrey and Fred Cuzon. Coco Loco is the brainchild of Caroline Mudge and Laila Whiteing, who wanted to create a unique and quirky space for artists to exhibit their work alongside DJ’s and performers. You won't want to miss this! Merry Christmas and Happy Giving xx

THE EMCEE The Sparkling Miss Donna Perignonn Arrived in Cairns 23 years ago; an original “Queen of the Daintree”; a drag queen of many looks and talents; becoming a part of the bohemian nightclub life and progressing to burlesque style night club acts. Donna has performed on many a stage across the country, always to great audience acclaim. Playing characters, designing all her own costumes, makeup, production and staging & creating stunning visual performances – and has used these talents to raise funds for Cancer research and Relay For Life.

THE AFFIRMATIVE TEAM David Leith is small publisher, and not just in stature. He lived under the yolk of empirical rule in the UK until escaping by sea a little over decade ago. Sailing to the sunnier climes of the Southern Hemisphere to live the dream of becoming a slayer (of the lexicon), a reaver (of sandwiches) a corsair (of, God knows), a usurper (of parking spaces), and a conqueror (of small tasks). He has made his home and business in FNQ.

ANNETTE JARRETT

Annette Jarrett is pretty well known around this town – more of the quiet reserved type we all love and know?...yeah maybe not… Most people will hear Annette before they see her…either by her large booming voice or loud infectious laugh. Annette would be best known for her work with the Leukaemia Foundation but also worked for 4CAAM and HotFM– as the Promotions and Marketing Manager Annette may have organised your Company OB for your big sale or the opening of your business. Annette now works for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation which now says “In the words of LJ Hooker – I have found my new home”…doing what I love and enjoy the most in life….fundraising and making a difference for our community. “Shaping the Future, Created by James Mort”. A tag line that suggests his Midas touch is something we can all bank on and his ability to juggle 4 vastly different business ventures under one unifying brand of MiHaven (striving for social impact in all he undertakes), could imply he has superhuman skills. Yet at his core, this plumber turned Property Development Entrepreneur, is just a bloody hard-working decent bloke who wants a fair go for all and to leave a legacy bigger than his bank balance of beautiful things.

Laurie has honed a “dictator diva” management style and enjoys inventing new ways to make her employees cry. She is a people person with a critical eye for detail, so she will probably be nice to your face and then talk about your cheap-ass handbag behind your back. Laurie was born in the USA, and has travelled to over 40 countries--even the s***hole ones, as Trump would say—and has found Australia to be exactly as advertised: full of whinging bogans. It has been said that the only thing more impressive than Dan’s good looks, charm, penis and intellect is his humbleness. Dan truly believes that while life is short, it is the longest thing you will ever know. Life for Dan is not all sunshine and rainbows, It’s very difficult to be great. THREE DIVERSE EVENTS

for Tropical Writers In October, Cairns Tropical Writers Festival as part of its year-round program of events welcomes renowned poet, performer and festival director from the UK, Chrys Salt MBE, who is in Australia as the international poet at this year’s Tasmanian Poetry Festival. Then in November, Professor Craig Batty is coming to Cairns, with a one-day professional-development workshop for screenwriters and filmmakers.

SPICY SUNDOWNER WITH CHRYS SALT MBE Join us for a compelling poetry performance with UK poet Chrys Salt MBE in the late afternoon at sundown, 5.30-7.30pm on Friday 11 October 2019 at Rydges Esplanade. Drinks, canapés and networking on arrival will be followed by the spoken word poetry, Q&A and book signings. Chrys’s performance will be from her 2017 publication, The Punkawallah's Rope, to coincide with the seventieth anniversary of the Partition of India. This book was her response as a visiting writer from the ex-colonial power to the overwhelming first experience of India following her readings in India in 2016 at the Kolkata Book Fair. The Punkawallah's Rope is a sequenced performance from the book that will be preceded by readings from some of our local poets.

WRITING AND PERFORMING WORKSHOP The following day Chrys will give a one-day workshop from 10.00am – 4.30pm at the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre to support local writers to go ‘from empty page to mic and stage’. The morning will be devoted to getting new work written, in Chrys’s words, ‘Don’t get it right, get it written’. This promises to be

an exhilarating journey into the imagination by using a series of writing exercises to weave words together as ripples on the surface of a deeper idea. The afternoon’s focus will be on how to present or ‘perform’ your work for an audience. While this won’t teach acting in an afternoon, drawing on Chrys’s theatre background, she can pass on quite a few ‘tricks of the trade’.

DEVELOPING A TV OR WEB SERIES WITH CRAIG BATTY

This one-day workshop on Saturday 16 November will explore two of the fundamental aspects of creating a TV or web series – world and character. Aimed at authors thinking about the screen, or emerging and practising screenwriters who want to advance their skills in developing concepts and deepening their understanding of script development, this workshop will delve into the relationship between world and character, and how this informs themes and storylines. Professor Craig Batty has mentored many new, emerging and practising writers in the UK and Australia for over 15 years. He is an award-winning author, educator a n d researcher in screenwriting and script development and the author and editor of 12 books on writing for the screen. This workshop is a partnership between Queensland Writers Centre, Central Queensland University and Cairns Tropical Writers Festival. All bookings via Eventrite or for queries, contact 0437 366 651 or program@cairnstropicalwritersfestival.com

Spilling WOMEN the beans on... IN MALE DOMINATED INDUSTRIES

Being a woman in a male dominated industry has as many challenges as it has rewards. As Beyonce said, “who runs the world? Girls.”

AIRRISH FLORESCA ENGINEERING

FLORENCE DRUMMOND MINING

Tell us a little bit about what you do and how you first got involved in your line of work. AIRRISH: I work in the Assets Planning department of the Port of Melbourne as an Asset Engineer. I develop and execute condition assessment programs, assist in minor and major capital works and assist with the development of our new Asset Management System. I first got involved in my line of work when I did my university work experience with the Cairns Regional Council in 2015 and later got offered a full-time role once I graduated. I’ve been working professionally as an Engineer since December 2016. FLORENCE: I work in the Mining and Resources industry onsite. I first got involved when I saw an ad in the Torres News for opportunities in Weipa. CIANNA: My husband was already a professional wrestler and qualified personal trainer when we met back in 2013. It was not long before we were launching our first professional wrestling organisation in 2014. My husband proposed at our debut event, cementing professional wrestling as a significant milestone in our lives. We moved to Cairns at the end of 2017 to enjoy the beautiful FNQ lifestyle with our two small children before launching Pro Wrestling Power in early 2018. My roles and responsibilities within Pro Wrestling Power are Co-owner, Administrator, Merchandiser, Front of House, Social Media Contributor, and Network Liaison. I am responsible for a lot of things behind the scenes like our operational plan, tracking our promotion strategies, networking, and relationship building. How do people usually react when you tell them what it is you do for work? AIRRISH: People are usually quite impressed when I

CIANNA McLACHLAN

PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING

tell them what I do for work. I think it’s a combination of my young age, position, and the company I work for that gives them this impression. FLORENCE: When I share my story with school kids in the classroom it absolutely blows them away when I ask them to imagine a truck tyre much taller than me. It’s probably been one of the best engagements to share and know you are inspiring them to literally “think bigger”. CIANNA: People sometimes laugh, or react with shock when I tell them that I am involved in Professional Wrestling. Sometimes it takes a few stories and photo evidence before they believe me. Why do you think your industry is a male dominated one? AIRRISH: I think engineering naturally leans itself towards construction and project management which is also male dominated. Men are historically viewed as the ‘builders’ and ‘planners’ in this field and subsequently, there are more men than women in engineering. I also think it’s because a lot of women feel ‘intimidated’ or ‘lonely’ in a male dominated career such as engineering. There have been numerous times where I’ve felt intimidated or dismissed because of my age and gender and it can get pretty tough to push through that. FLORENCE: It is traditionally a role that is physically demanding and remote, with uncomfortable conditions and exposure to the elements. That could be one reason. As well as minimal demand for tertiary qualification requirements and a workplace culture of being more male focussed.

CIANNA: Professional wrestling requires commitment, and as women we sometimes have a lot of different commitments already, especially as we become mothers and this takes priority in our lives. For me, being involved in professional wrestling is easier as my husband and I are in it together. I know that I have his support, that we have a great team of people working together, and that we have a network of extremely professional highly experienced domestic and international wrestlers that are really supportive, inclusive and encouraging. What is your favourite thing about your job? AIRRISH: I chose to pursue a career in engineering because I wanted the work I do to have a direct and positive impact on the community and end users. I also wanted a career that would expose me to new things and everyday presented a new challenge. So I guess my favourite thing about my job is all the interesting things I learn from on-the-job training, subject matter experts, and driving around town and seeing the infrastructure projects I helped with being used by the community. FLORENCE: Being close to nature is one of the most rewarding elements of my job, as well as the creation of opportunities for people in remote rural communities. CIANNA: I have the best job at our live action events - I am the front of house! I get to meet and greet all of our

wonderful fans, find out who their favourite wrestler is, share in the excitement, and enjoy the full experience supporting the great local food trucks that attend our events. What would you say to other females who might be interested in following your footsteps? AIRRISH: If you have a passion for engineering or any career in STEM – just go for it. When I put in my application to study a Bachelor of Engineering I didn’t think about how it would feel being a woman in a male dominated field. I was thinking about the cool structures I’d learn about, how interesting the next few years of my life are going to be, and the places my job could take me. Don’t be scared or intimidated by the career path because the work you will end up doing is incredibly rewarding, challenging, and fun. FLORENCE: Don’t be scared to fail and know that you will be influencing other people more than you know. CIANNA: Don’t let the small percentage of negative people stop you. There is always going to be someone who is critical or judgemental but the majority of people are supportive, encouraging, and chasing the same goals. In regards to wrestling, learn from experienced qualified professionals, get to know your body, become really familiar with your strengths and weaknesses, and safety first!

SUMMER HAIR Don't Care! HAIR EMMA GELLING Blended Beach waves ... frizz effects ... top knots. These are the buzz words of hair this summer season. If you're anything like me, my jeans are already vacuumed bagged and stored for next year. The heat has arrived, and the brisk mornings are but a distant memory! Enjoy these months of the increased heat minus the humidity, it’s a great time to test new products and it’s also your last chance to rock a style change for the year. Remember if you're thinking of any big changes, you need to up the home care and be aware of how much your hair is in chlorine or salt water.

• Dry Shampoo: This is my absolute favourite. Personally, I only wash my hair once a week. I also go to the gym three times a week, so with this heat picking up, I need all the help I can get stretching my wash day. Dry shampoo is my best friend! • Leave in treatment: Another BFF. If you love swimming, you're going to need to protect hair with a leave-in treatment with added sunscreen, which will protect your hair from the sun and chlorine whilst locking in moisture. Soak up the heat, embrace the curls and enjoy this summer season.

So here they are ... my top tips for rocking your style this summer: • Sea Salt spray: If you haven’t got one get one. Spritz in the hair wet or dry and scrunch with fingers for a perfect imperfect curl

Follow us on Facebook to keep up to date on our next event. Blended Hair is running hair and makeup for workshops once a month on a Thursday evening. If the times or dates don’t suit, just get three friends together and book your very own party!

• Shampoo twice always: Always shampoo your hair twice before conditioning, the first removes dirt and product from the scalp the second removes it from the ends.

MENTAL HEALTH CHECK

for the men in your life

PSYCHOLOGY

KAREN DOW Shine Strong Psychology As I made my way to work one morning, my head was consumed by the upcoming weeks enormous to-do list, having just survived a hectic weekend of housework, driving the kids around and recovering from one too many wines watching the AFL grand final with friends. It suddenly dawned on me, that one of the important men in my life was showing signs of a decline in his wellbeing. But I’m a mental health professional. How did I fail to notice this? Simple - with all the stresses of our normal, daily lives, recognising the signs can be tricky. I thought how often this must be happening, and how important it is for us all to know the signs and risk factors, and know when to act.

others and being goal focused. However, sometimes these strategies fail, so it’s important we know the signs to look for that indicate the much loved male in our lives may be battling depression or anxiety. These emotions may emerge as restlessness or lack of interest in daily activities, changes in weight or sleep patterns, feelings of worthlessness or agitation, a difficulty in concentration or the ability to control their worry. Research has also identified that even though depression is a key factor in male suicide, it is not the major reason. Men are more likely to attempt suicide after difficult life events, particularly the Three D’s death, divorce and debt. If any of these events occur 4 tips maybe helpful.

Quite often, men are carrying a burden of mental health issues that is hidden from our view. They tend to find it difficult to break the stigma of weakness that is far too often associated with depression or anxiety. Around the world, one man suicides every minute, and in Australia, males account for two-thirds of all suicides.

Attend to the signs of mental health decline by knowing the signs. Ask them if they are OK? Accept and listen to their experience. Aid them to make a connection with others such as professional, friends or even a phone counselor.

Research in Australia has identified that men use different coping strategies than women to mitigate negative feelings associated with mental health. A few of these strategies include humour, keeping themselves busy, exercising, eating healthy, helping

2019 HIA PIONEER NQ HOUSING, KITCHEN & BATHROOM AWARDS

It’s the Night of Nights for the Far North’s building industry. TRADING STORIES WITH ...

Jodi Allen

There's no shortage of business networking groups in the fine city of ours. Each one has it's own unique story, and different focus which attracts its own tribe. One of the groups that has been gathering huge momentum over the past few years is Trading Mate. It started with a vision to be the ost cost effective online advertising option for Australian small businesses, but has turned into so much more. We caught up with Jodi Allen, the founder of Trading Mate, to hear the full story of Trading Mate. Over the next three issues of Oasis Magazine, we'll be revealing the whole story, but for now, let's get the inside scoop on the origins of this fantastic local success story. "It all started a few years back. It was time to head back into the workforce after six years at home with my little people. It's a tough time for a parent, because we all want to have a better work/life balance, but financial constraints associated with the cost of living means that generally parents have to contribute to the family budget in some way.

"I started thinking about the skills that I had acquired over my many years working, and it seemed like a good idea to set up a small, home-based bookkeeping business." Jodi admits there were times when she was nervous. "Starting a business is risky, but it's also really exciting, and the whole thing just seemed right. I decided it was time to 'have a go'". "Fortunately, as a bookkeeper, the only major financial outlay was for business promotion & advertising. I started looking around, and the phone books all offered a “free listing on their website in exchange for a hefty fee to advertise in their hard copy directories. Studies at that time were indicating that about 80% of people found it more convenient to look things up on the internet. We search online to get the information we require. So I knew it really was time to make a start, to join the tech-savvy people and get my business online.

I spent a lot of time uploading photos, perfecting my business speil to ensure all the right keywords were included, and uploaded onto the online directory. And ... nothing. Not a single enquiry! Any bookkeeping work that came my way seemed to originate from friends or by word of mouth. And often, it was a favour in exchange for a haircut or manicure. "Favours are one thing, but I started thinking - what if amongst the usual paying clients, an exchange of real value items and services could be procured? Also, every business has to have some form of bookkeeping in place, right? "Looking around my home, I noted that the patio roof needed painting, there were electrical repairs, pool paving, garden maintenance, and geez it’d be nice to have a cleaner or lawn mowing service …

business exchange? Surely there were others out there in a similar predicament? With jobs they put off because of financial or time constraints, or just placed in the “later, it’s too hard right now” category? Imagine if we had, in our networks, a group of professionals from each of the business industries we needed, and we could trust them to do an honest and careful job. And, quite simply, that’s how the idea of Trading Mate came to be. It was an idea to form a network of small business owners, tradies, and give them access to the best internet advertising exposure and connections at face-to-face networking functions for small business at the lowest possible cost.

"I started thinking - What if there was a way to connect with other local businesses, to discuss some form of

MISINFORMATION AND

False Assumptions TAMLYN LEAHY Family Lawyer

As a family law lawyer I regularly have to pick apart a client or another party’s misinformation about what happens when husbands and wives and partners separate. The Bogeyman of family law strikes often, putting fear into separating spouses as to what they may or may not get and letting preconceived notions get in the way of reaching a timely resolution. Listed are a few of those preconceived notions that often frustrate a resolution: • That the courts and the lawyers will “screw you over”. The duties of a lawyer to the court are fundamental. Lawyers must obey the law and ensure the efficient and proper administration of justice. This means a lawyer must represent their client’s interest to the very best of their abilities and within the confines of the law. Each family law matter that comes before a court has its own unique set of circumstances. There is no one size fits all mentality. • That a Mother always gets the children or gets to dictate the parenting arrangements. When a court is making a parenting order it must regard the best interests of the children as the most important consideration. One of the primary considerations is the benefit of a child having a meaningful relationship with both parents. • That superannuation is not an asset of the relationship. When a marriage or relationship breaks down the property can be divided between the parties, and superannuation is no exception. It is treated as property. A division of the assets could include a superannuation split, that is that a party of the relationship may be entitled to a proportion of the other party’s superannuation.

• That property of the relationship is divided up equally, regardless. Property rights on the breakdown of a relationship are altered when it is “just and equitable” to do so. How the assets of the relationship are divided between the parties depends on the contributions of the parties to that relationship, including financial and non-financial contributions and to the future needs of the parties. • That men generally get a raw deal. Family law is not biased against men. Some of the preconceived notions listed above may appear to be marginalizing the husband or the father. The Family Law Act of Australia 1975 does not contain gender bias. The Act requires the court to give consideration to the best interests of the child when determining parenting matters and to consider whether an alteration of an interest in property is just and equitable. • I do not need to disclose my personal financial information. A duty of disclosure requires each party to provide to the court and to each other all information relevant to an issue in the case. You must provide information and documents regarding your circumstances that are in your possession, power or control and that continue to come into your possession, even after separation. • Its personal. It’s not. It may be for the individual parties involved or so it may seem to them at the time. But to the courts and the lawyers representing their client to the best of their abilities, it is about complying with the law and ensuring the timely and proper administration of the law.

IT'S A SMALL WORLD It certainly is a small world that will be on display at Cairns Museum from now until December. Eleven tiny but perfectly formed room suites are the work of one man – master wood craftsman and gifted miniaturist Les Paul. The late Mr Paul was a lifelong resident of Cairns and his downsizing arose from his profession of cabinet making. He turned his love of wood and furniture design and creation into a hobby, turning out Lilliputian-sized rooms in replica complete with wallpaper, art works and all kinds of accessories. Les Paul’s family have donated his rooms to the Cairns Historical Society and they will be displayed at the museum from September 7 until December. From 1937 onwards until the mid-1980s, he made the 11 complete room suites of furniture plus numerous single pieces. They are built on a scale of 1:6 (2 inches to one foot/ 5cm to 30cm). Mr Paul brought all his skills of cabinetmaking to the task, as well as being a qualified glazier. If he didn’t have the right tool to do a precise job, or it didn’t exist – he made one. The suites are beautiful renditions of fullsized bedroom, living and dining room suites, shaped from Queensland maple and red cedar, silky oak, Kauri and Huon pine. “Fiddly” doesn’t even begin to describe the patience and skills needed to make the pieces. For Mr Paul there was no such thing as just gluing things together – the assembly follows his craft with mitres, dovetails, mortise and tenon joints – in miniature. Not a single nail or staple was used either. The suites are housed in glass fronted boxes and are completed by accessories to finish the rooms – carpet, wallpaper, bedspreads and clothes made by Mr Paul’s daughter Audrey (pictured right) and crocheted doilies made by Mr Paul’s wife. Audrey Robins (nee Paul) says her dad made the first suite when out of work in 1937. “He was not sports minded at all and he said to mum ‘oh, I think I’ll make a little miniature bedroom suite, and that’s how he got started in 1937.” He retired in 1974 and Audrey says that is when he started to make a complete suite a year. If he didn’t make a full suite one year he would instead work on individual pieces, “just for something different”. Les Paul would only tell his family what he was working on and local artists. “Nobody would get a sneak preview except us and artists like Ulla Jensen, Sheila Forbes, and Xavier Herbert.” They would provide the tiny artworks

. . after all

to hang in the rooms. “They would say to him – ‘Pauley [that was his nickname] we just know just the painting for that’ and they would go away and do a tiny oil painting on canvas and dad would frame it.” The goodwill was mutual with Mr Paul making the frames for many artists around Cairns. Once finished the suites were popular and word of mouth ensured plenty of visitors at the Paul family home. The first visitors’ book from July 5, 1976 to August 10, 1981 had 1651 signatures. They wouldn’t be charged a cent and many would be given a little handmade rolling pin as a memento. Audrey says her fondest memory of her dad’s work is seeing him in the “little old shed” making his miniatures as well as full size furniture for their home. The suites are amazingly intricate. A miniature drawing room in silky oak for instance took more than 320 hours of work – that’s two months full time work – and has 657 pieces. He never sold any but did take them to the annual Torimba Wood festival where he was a frequent Grand Champion, Champion of Champions and People’s Choice winner. Mr Paul died in 1992 and his collection has been looked after ever since by Mrs Robins and her late husband George. The donation to the Historical Society and exhibition at the museum fulfils her dad’s wishes. “He wanted to see the collection in a museum one day. Not for it to be split up and he never wanted it to leave Cairns.”
