Walk this way for gifts with a conscience, for sustainably sourced toys and collectables that last a lifetime, for reclaimed and vintage fashion and wares. The Oceana Walk Arcade’s stores collectively create an eco-friendly shopping experience. Here are just a snapshot of what some of the stores practice and preach. They don’t just talk the talk, but walk the walk!

Where possible we try and buy “locally”, however with Cairns being a smaller town, we are sometimes restricted. We do, however look to towns as close to us as possible, who may have the same problem. This way we are helping each other out. We also appreciate all things pretty – be it handmade, mindfully sourced or something from yesteryear, it’s the story that goes with a product that really increases the value of something. We found a void in Cairns of eclectic gift shops, you know how you think “oh I need a present for such & such and they’re so hard to buy for! What can I get them?” – we pride ourselves on being that shop you come to, to buy a gift for anyone ranging from the age of newborn to 101.

EGGPLANT & POPPY Our love of upcycling came from a sense of hoarding and the desire to give something a “New” purpose rather than becoming land fill or sitting in a box for another 90 years. Apart from being visually pleasing, the product also must be practical in nature, and that is when two heads are better than one – together we brainstorm the functionality & aesthetics of each E&P handmade product, which are forever changing whilst keeping up with trends etc. We think there has been a huge movement towards conscious buying including reclaimed and handmade, even as recently as the past 12 months. People are starting to see the positive effects from buying locally handmade – the repercussions from a financial (the money staying in the town), the associated footprint & and even social aspect – getting to know your customers & vice versa which leads to loyalty from both parts. This is one of the most heart-warming aspects for us. 42 | www.oasismagazine.com.au

VINTAGE SEEKER Vintage Seeker was born out of a deep seated passion for the uniqueness and beauty of clothing from a bygone era, having said that, it wasn't long before we realised what a difference buying pre-loved makes to the environment. There's a smaller carbon footprint, less energy used, less petro chemicals & dyes released into the environment, less contributions to landfill. Not to mention garments were often hand tailored, and never produced by child labour. We are observing a huge awareness by the public of how their choices do impact the environment and society. There is a definite trend to buy only vintage, with many clients only giving themselves a handful of free passes to purchase something new... Others trend towards only buying classic Australian made labels

like Cue or Carla Zampatti. People are sick of feeling like they are buying throw away items, and vintage clothing was made to last. Buying vintage lets people feel good in themselves for having something unique to them, but that also doesn't impact the environment, or support dubious trade practices. We take this message even further at home by fixing instead of dumping... Clothes, toys even furniture can be mended & restored and don't have to contribute to landfill. So many things in this world have a lot of life left in them, it's a beautiful feeling to contemplate where something has come from, the story it can tell. And it's hugely rewarding to bring something that has been neglected back to life. And at Vintage seeker that's what we do, bring divine Vintage to a whole new generation, make it fit perfectly with our alteration service, and make you feel good while you do it! product, not a better product. To sum up, there are plenty of wonderful toys, there just needs to be more people looking for them. The more people are looking for these kinds of products, the more industry will pop up to facilitate it.

EARTH TOYS When establishing Earth Toys we came from a perspective of promoting quality play experiences. Playfulness is a often overlooked but is a very important part of life, whether your 6 months or 60 years old, a good quality ‘prop’ or ‘toy’ can really enhance your experience and quality of life. We have established a business that people can trust. We don’t try to compete with the large players in the toy industry. We cannot compete with them as far as advertising and buying power goes, but they cannot compete with us for customer service, integrity and pride in our products. Earth Toys sources products from all over the world. There are many aspects we look for in products. We request certificates of fair labour/work conditions. If the product line is wooden we ask for FSC certification of the plantation woods, which treatments and finishings are used. Which inks, dyes and paints are used. Basically we do a quality check of all materials and processes to make sure they are appropriate for their intended use. Items intended for under 3 must be non toxic. Recycled products are also desirable. There is also a focus on the longevity of the product, as much as some toys are small and only good for a short term entertainment, we are conscious that many readily available toy brands are likely to break and become landfill quite quickly. We see there is a massive and ever changing industry of toys made with quality materials. This is always evolving and changing. However it’s not really about whether there are enough products to provide everyone with entertainment that aren't made with cheap and unconscious processes, it’s more a cultural issue that ethically made products are more expensive due to the fact that the workers were paid legal wages and the materials were purchased for a fair price. We have developed a consumer culture over the last 50 odd years that feeds the industries that come out with a cheaper

A good quality toy/game has the capacity to enhance your life in several aspects, but too many things can just clutter your surroundings and lose all the appeal as the gigantic pile of toys is less loved and respected than a bookshelf and toy box/s. Lots of cheap things usually quite quickly become a half broken pile of plastic in your loungeroom and believe it or not it is likely more expensive than having a few loved and treasured items. If every time you go to the shops for food you buy a $5 toy, that will add up very quickly in comparison to the few loved and respected toys. Also, remember its your house too, toys can be beautiful and look nice in your house. Another thing to consider is that like with a lot of products, often the cheaper varieties will break quicker than expected and cannot be repaired. Keep in mind, we are also more likely to look after our nicer things. It’s quite scary when you think about the amount of flimsy toys in landfill that the child has even finished loving yet. As a forward thinking business we are aware of the footprint our industry creates. The choices we make as consumers and business's directly affect the world we live in and it seems that some massive changes need to happen on a grand scale to help reduce the damage we are doing to our planet, ourselves and our combined futures. At Earth Toys we are making it easier for people to make conscious decisions based around toys and games while helping to create beautiful, playful memories and experiences. We hope that people choose to support businesses like us instead of the massive conglomerates that are only contributing to the problems.

During the seventies and eighties, I received a lot of air play by being one of the only models at the time wearing vintage and recycled clothing. Again, I found a sense of beauty and timelessness in these fashion items so I set up my first store in 1982 to trade in my passion with both clothes and artefacts. I am now the oldest second hand retailer in Cairns. I was heavily involved in the Envirofiesta showcasing wearable art and vintage fashion along with other "environmentally friendly" passionate business people and artists. This was as far back as the 1980s so my passion and my involvement with recycled, vintage clothing and artefacts goes back years. I strongly believe consumables, toys, giftware, clothes and even houses now are designed to be turned over quickly. There isn't that sense of tangible longevity about them. People purchase and then within 1-5 years are replacing. This is different to the philosophies of times gone by where we built things to last, we took care of our worldly possessions, we passed them on to the next generation. I provide that space where people can again find these special items. Kaotica - Shop 23, Oceana Walk 62 Grafton Street (07) 4051 9386

KAOTICA When I was 10, I moved from Australia to London with my family and became enamoured with the olde-worlde nature of both the architecture and the access to historical artefacts and books in relation to what we had access to in Australia. This started my passion along with the realisation that these "collectables" were built to last, grew in beauty over time and were more artistic and attractive to me than modern day finds. Over time through my travels, I collected numerous worldly artefacts. Pieces that had history, longevity and a story to go with them.

Many other stores within the arcade echo these ethics - Café Paleo sourcing organic and sustainable produce, Dear Pearl Vintage stocking recycled vintage fashion with a distinct 50s-60s vibe, Revival Records where you can revive your love of vinyl with a great collection of recycled records plus many more stories ... Walk our way.
