Happy Birthday Oasis! It’s hard to believe a year has passed since a tiny spark of an idea (due in part to one too many wines) materialised into the very first edition of Oasis Magazine. Twelve months on, we’re having just as much fun as ever, in many ways due to the amazing team of talented people who’ve jumped aboard this crazy train. A big thank you to all the readers, advertisers and contributors who’ve supported us over the last year. We hope it will be the first of many! Our Anniversary edition celebrates the onset of spring with our stunning photo-shoot featuring cutting edge Spring Racing fashion. And with Father’s Day around the corner, we also pay tribute to those special men in our lives who need a bit of pampering every now and then. Speaking of dads, we were fortunate to be invited into the home of Curtis Pitt MP and his lovely family. We also had the opportunity to meet the inventor of the Stinger Net, Kim Moss from Uninet Enclosure Systems. We’d also like to take a moment to extend our deepest sympathies to all the victims of the Ravenshoe café explosion and their families. In response to this recent tragedy, a group of passionate Cairns locals have formed a fundraising drive called Cairns Supports Ravenshoe. Funds raised will go to the GIVIT Ravenshoe Appeal and to the Nicole Nyholt/Dempsey family fund to support her two children. As part of this initiative, local businesses and large national corporations have donated prizes to be auctioned off on the website and won at a monster raffle. You can bid for auction prizes at www.cairnssupportsravenshoe.com.au, while the monster raffle will be drawn at the Pier Bar on the August 2. With over $10,000 worth of prizes to be won, please show your support for this very worthy cause.

The Screaming Jets
EVENTS
The Screaming Jets are on a Rock n Roll Rampage with the announcement of their 2015 national tour - and no rock fans are safe! Hot on the heels of their sell-out run in 2014 celebrating an incredible 25 years of Aussie rock, The Screaming Jets will be undertaking their biggest run in recent history, travelling to all the regional centres. Lead singer Dave Gleeson says the band is really looking forward to their forthcoming shows, especially those up in North Queensland. “These venues are all hand-picked in the places we’ve toured over the years as well as places we really want to bring our rock stylings to,” he says. “The more punters, the better the rampage!” The Screaming Jets really need no introduction to Australian rock fans. They have been a permanent force on the live music scene since they burst onto the airwaves in 1989 from their hometown of Newcastle. Their debut album All For One, released in the early 1990s, cemented the band in Oz rock history and spawned their classic anthem Better. Since then the band haven’t really stopped and have an enviable back catalogue including hits Helping Hand, October Grey and Sad Song to name a few, including their revered cover of Shivers.
ROCK N ROLL
RAMPAGE TOUR 2015
One thing The Screaming Jets are extremely well known for are their powerful live shows. Their 2015 tour, which is aptly titled Rock n Roll Rampage harks back to what the band believe rock shows should be. “The name refers to those great old days when rock bands would come storming through cities and suburbs, rocking out and contributing to the delinquency of minors,” says Dave. “This is what we strive to do today. We are now contributing to the delinquency of minors and their parents… proudly.” Don’t miss The Screaming Jets as they rock through North Queensland as they bring 25 years of experience and music genius to Brothers Leagues Club Cairns on Friday 16th October. Tickets are available at www.brotherscairns. com.au or phone 4053 1053.

The 1979 cult film classic, ‘Alien’ will be showing at the Tanks, alongside a Revenge of the Body Snatchers discussion on parasites. Other events, such as comedy nights and documentaries will be featured at the Tanks during the Science Week. Low Gravity is an exhibition featuring 18 handpicked artisans, including internationally renowned artist Chiara Bautista all the way from the US. At home with..
CURTIS PITT It’s 7.30 on a Saturday morning as I arrive at the family home of Curtis Pitt, and the first one to greet me is Macy, the family pet. Named after singer Macy Gray, she is a gorgeous greyhound who was rescued through the Greyhound Adoption Program in Brisbane and she is very keen to investigate as Curtis welcomes me in.
“This house was about to be put on the market and I said to the owner that if I won the election I would be back to talk to them about buying the house. And here we are.”
As I follow Curtis through to the dining room, he apologises for the mess. “What mess?” I ask. It looks like a typical family home to me with kid’s toys, story books, little sequin trainers in the corner and kid’s artwork. After all, Curtis lives here with his wife Kerry and their three kids Tristan (6), Layla (4) and Kobi (2). It’s not long until the rest of the family joins us. As we sit down over coffee, Curtis explains that he came across this house while door knocking in the lead-up to the 2009 election. “At the time we were living on my parents lounge room floor as Kerry and I had just moved back to Cairns from
Brisbane,” Curtis says. “This house was about to be put on the market. I told the owner that if I won the election I would be back to talk to them about buying it. And here we are.” And to Curtis, it is a welcome retreat from long days as Queensland’s Treasurer and Local Member for Mulgrave. Born at Cairns Base Hospital, he grew up in Gordonvale and says it is wonderful to be able to bring his own kids up here in the same town. While Curtis grew up around politics, with his father Warren being the wellrespected Labor Minister and Member for Mulgrave, Curtis actually had dreams of being a fighter pilot. “I used to collect a series of aviation magazines called ‘Take Off’ when I was growing up and wanted to be a fighter pilot. Obviously, I didn’t follow that path,” he laughs. Instead, Curtis’s first job was at a local petrol station, then packing shelves at IGA supermarket, washing dishes at

Then, while studying politics and journalism at JCU, he worked as an Auxiliary Fire Fighter for a few years. “It was a real eye opener. I don’t think people realise that you actually go to more car accidents than you do to fires. It can be a tough job.” He then spent a few years as a copywriter in radio before taking on the role of Regional Marketing Manager for Birch, Carroll and Coyle. This led to film publicity and touring with actors and directors to promote their movies. It’s a time he says he really enjoyed and his home is now adorned with many signed movie posters from those days. After deciding to pursue a communications job in Government, Curtis and Kerry moved to Brisbane to live in 2003. Turbulent years followed, with Curtis’s dad diagnosed with cancer and the unexpected death of Kerry’s mum in 2007. Shortly after, Curtis and Kerry found out they were pregnant with their first child. Despite a healthy pregnancy, their daughter Isabel was stillborn. Whilst still grieving, Kerry suggested Curtis follow his heart into politics, so they moved back to Cairns. Curtis was preselected as the Labor candidate for Mulgrave following

manages a $50 billion annual budget and a $300 billion economy and says his main priorities are to continue growing the economy, bring back job security and better work conditions. At a local level as the Member for Mulgrave, Curtis says his focus is on making sure we have the facilities to meet the growth in the southern corridor. “We made a state wide election commitment to increase teacher numbers and will follow through on this, as well as attending to the backlog of school maintenance still needed” he says. “And a southern health facility is still a priority.” It’s hard to imagine how Curtis finds the time to juggle his work commitments as well as family, but he says his staff and wife make it all possible.

Although relatively unheard of just a decade or so ago, social media is now an essential part of our everyday lives. While connecting electronically has streamlined the networking process both personally and professionally, it also comes with its share of problems. So, in order to find out just how much of an effect social media has on lives, we met with three charming locals to get their take on modern communication.
Q: How many hours a day would you spend on social media? Lorraine: Probably an hour. Having said that, I find it a huge time waster because I often go on Facebook in the evenings for a quick look then before I know it hours have passed (everyone laughs). Allan: I’d say up to an hour a day. I use Facebook for social interaction and LinkedIn for business. I also tend to take part in a lot of work-related discussions via LinkedIn. Jack: I use Facebook and Instagram and also have a blog and a website. I’d probably spend about two active hours a day on social media, but since my phone is always connected I get alerts constantly.
Q: How has social media improved the way you network with friends and business associates? Lorraine: Being from Scotland, it allows me to keep in touch with family and friends visually, without having to make time for a lengthy phone call. It also allows me to keep upto-date with scientific developments around the world. Allan: A lot of my clients who are retirees complain that their grandkids don’t talk to them, so I’ve encouraged them to set up accounts and all of a sudden they’re connected again – and probably finding out more than they actually want to know (everyone laughs). 18 | www.oasismagazine.com.au
Jack: I use it to source political info and news, and to organise my social life. Still, I don’t think anything beats an old-fashioned phone call.
Q: What do you consider some of the disadvantages or dangers of social media? Jack: The risk to your privacy and security. When you voice your opinions you can become exposed to the wrong people. Allan: People need to be more careful about who they allow into their networks. I read about a Professor at a London University who set up a Facebook profile for a plastic frog and within 48 hours it had over 600 friends and access to all their personal information. Lorraine: Even worse, I recently heard a story about a 12 year-old girl who’d been chatting to whom she thought was a boy her age. Just before she left to meet with him, the police warned the family they’d been monitoring the movements of a suspected paedophile ring.
Q: Bearing these stories in mind, what level of exposure to social media do you think is appropriate for children and what age should they be exposed? Lorraine: I think the most important thing is to make them aware of what goes on and the dangers that are out there. Allan: Some parents monitor it. I don’t necessarily agree with it, but you can’t blame them for wanting to protect their kids. Jack: My 15-year-old sister who lives in London sent me a friend request, but after seeing some of the things she and her friends were posting, I rang my dad and told him he’d better take her off straight away (everyone laughs).

KIM MOSS “I was working as a research engineer at JCU back in 1982 when the council approached the University to come up with a solution to protect swimmers from box jellyfish”
20 | www.oasismagazine.com.au
Most of us don’t give the stinger net enclosures a second thought during the off season when the beaches are safe to swim at, but one local company spends these quieter months flat out preparing for the next stinger season. Uninet Enclosure Systems is a locallyowned Cairns business that not only installs the stinger nets along the Queensland coast, but also make the nets from scratch and repair and maintain them all year round. And the owner, Kim Moss, has been there from the beginning as the original inventor of these air-inflated stinger net enclosures. In fact, as far as he knows, Uninet is the only company worldwide that make these air-inflated, floating enclosures. “I was working as a research engineer at JCU back in 1982 when the council approached the University to come up with a solution to protect swimmers from box jellyfish. I was given the task of finding a solution and Uninet was created.”
Now a financially independent company that has been operating for over 20 years, Uninet supplies the stinger and shark protection enclosure systems to Councils all the way along coast on an all-inclusive basis. Uninet install and maintain the enclosures, servicing 28 beaches from Airlie Beach to Port Douglas and from Gladstone to the Gold Coast. Enclosures are installed in early November via a mechanical winch and once the anchors and machinery are in place, it takes about an hour or so to install. They are then removed each May as the stinger season ends. However, wild weather like cyclones and floods can be detrimental to the enclosures so whenever a cyclone warning has been issued, all the stinger enclosures in that vicinity need to be brought in and then re-installed once the wild weather passes. It can be a lot of work for Kim’s small staff of six, but they all accept that wild weather is a way of life in the tropics.

which can grow to over 30 centimetres in size. “Luckily the jellyfish have welldeveloped senses with eyes on all four sides and they sense the presence of the net before coming in contact with it, so they move away.” However, small irukandji jellyfish can still inhabit
beaches during stinger season so wearing stinger suits and only swimming in lifeguard-patrolled enclosures is still the safest option. “Lifeguards take water samples several times a day and if irukandji are detected or someone is stung, then beaches are closed down until they are deemed safe again for swimming,” Kim says. Uninet also make and install shark protection enclosures for the sheltered waters on the Gold Coast, with six nets installed there. Kim says their real work at Uninet begins when it’s the off season and they get stuck into repairing and maintaining the nets and equipment. “Every year we start the season with almost as many nets as beaches and hope we will have just enough to make it to the end of the season,” Kim laughs. I love racing season! It’s a time to step outside the box, be creative, dress up and have fun with friends. Even enjoy a champers during the daytime! Which is why I thought I’d provide some inspiration with our beautiful fashion shoot full of beautiful dress options, along with a selection of fascinators, hats, crowns, and accessories to give you some inspiration and showcase some of our amazing talent up in the Far North. I am also in a big dilemma myself in choosing which way to go; we are so spoilt for choice! Sometimes you fall in love with the hat first and then work everything to go with it, while others are shoe lovers, in which case the shoes come first. I personally like to find the dress first. Then comes the decision of “what’s on trend” in colours, fabrics, and patterns. Do you go classic, elegant, outrageous, edgy or ultra-feminine? Some don’t care too much and just decide on the day! Men are becoming just as enthusiastic as the women and dressing to coordinate with their partner, or just trying to impress in their own right. It’s all so exciting and sometimes even stressful for some. My advice is to dress for you - wear what you feel good in and what showcases both your personality and style. Once

your outfit all comes together you’ll feel fantastic and confident, and this just adds more joy to an already fun day. Just remember ladies, if you want to show a bit of leg or decollage, do not do both. Don’t overdo the fake tan; remember that less is more, and don’t forget to smile. If you are looking to enter Fashions on the Field, follow the dress code (yes there are rules!) Oh, and the golden rule, do not take your shoes off throughout the entire day! Good luck Ladies! I look forward to seeing your beautiful outfits on the day, Giddy up!! PS: Happy 1st Birthday Oasis xx www.modernstyle.com.au

A winning tan
ON THE RACETRACK BEAUTY ANNIE GODWIN DARE WAXING & TANNING
Some race day events I would rather walk around with a blindfold on than look at incorrectly applied self-tans. Streaks, patches, sweat lines and an orange tinge all over, are vital signs that you have got a bad tan. And YES people will notice! So let me give you some helpful tips on achieving the perfect brown glow on race day. There are some general rules to follow before applying self-tanning lotions (or before having a spray tan) to ensure you get the streak-free, even glow that you desire. • Exfoliate body and face, concentrating on elbows, knees, ankles • Wear loose baggy clothing preferably with no straps afterwards • Remove all jewellery • Do not wear moisturizer • Do not wear deodorant • Remove make up when possible Along with the rules above there are a couple of extra tips and tricks below for at-home self-tanning. • Purchase yourself an “easy reach applicator” to get to those hard to reach spots! They are exceptionally good for getting an even application on your back, and can be purchased from a range of chemists around Cairns.
32 | www.oasismagazine.com.au
• If you are using a lotion or mousse and don’t have a tanning mitt to apply it with, make sure you wear a pair of gloves to keep all that tan build up off your hands and wrist. Once your tan is applied all over your body, remove the gloves and give your hands a light coat of lotion/mousse. Aftercare spray tan products and tan extenders are available in most tanning ranges, so please read/listen to instructions and follow accordingly to the brand or to your beauty therapist. At Dare we use the 1hour Lyco Bronze Rapid spray tan, this cutting edge formula allows tan enthusiasts to have the ultimate in convenience spray tanning. If your initial thoughts for Spring Racing Fashion includes less fabric and more skin, Houston we may have a problem! Although considered highly fashionable, even the midriff will be unacceptable in some areas of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival this year. While women entering general admission areas will be able to flash their flesh in midriffexposing crop tops, those trying to enter the Member and VIP areas this year will be turned away. “I think the belly ban is a good thing,” says style commentator Melissa Hoyer. “People are far too lazy and disrespectful with what they wear to some of the country’s biggest social events” But in North Queensland, things are a bit more relaxed and the biggest problem we face is from a male point of view. The brightly coloured suit still
rears its ugly head far too often – or worse still, the suit you wore to your high school formal. There is never a right place for the wrong suit. Get rid of it. And while you’re at the bin, throw your white sunglasses away too. When it comes to hair, it’s all about natural, very “undone” styles, especially in relation to colour. It should look like the elements have created it (not 3 hairdressers in 6 hours). For blondes: honey, cool caramel and cream tones are ideal, with mocha browns a great choice for brunettes. In relation to styles for the races the same rule applies; your style should only draw debate on whether it was it done by yourself or a hairdresser. Less is more, simple and natural. www.redssalon.com.au

Relax, destress and
RECONNECT The main purpose of a day spa is to provide the perfect escape, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A space to drift away, de-stress and be pampered. Whether you’re getting ready for a special occasion or just reconnecting with the most important person in your life (YOU), here’s my top tips for the ultimate time out: 1. Take the day off: There’s nothing worse than checking your watch when you’re meant to be unwinding. Take your time enjoying some of the many fantastic services available, including facial treatments, massage therapy (why not try a luxurious hot stone massage treatment), heated mud wraps and body scrubs, hand and feet treatments, tanning and waxing. 2. Plan your experience: Check out the salon’s website, or drop by and pick up a brochure. At Refresh, we’ve always happy to make time for a chat, offer suggestions and to explain our specials. Why not create your very own Spa Package! 3. Arrive early: This will allow you time to meet your therapist, as well as relax and unwind before your spa experience starts. There is nothing more stressful than running late.
34 | www.oasismagazine.com.au
4. Dress comfortably: Wear loose clothing and remember, if pampering your feet is part of your spa experience, flip flops are highly recommended to ensure your freshly painted nails are give time to dry (not to mention, you can flash those fabulous feet). 5. Share the experience: Why not enjoy a joint appointment with a loved one or a friend. A relaxing lunch at a nearby cafe or restaurant afterwards is a great way to make a day of it. Your visit to a day spa should be a truly relaxing experience - a micro mini holiday to relax, de-stress and reconnect. It is so important not to neglect looking after YOU, but if there is a special someone also in need of a bit of pampering, why not surprise them with a voucher to their own personal spa experience. www.refreshcitydayspa.com.au

TO SLEEP ON HEALTH DR ELIZABETH CHAPPEL MBBS BSc (Hons) FRACGP
APPLETREE MEDICAL CENTRE CAIRNS
“The average person needs between 8 and 9 hours sleep a night, though the amount an individual requires varies greatly from person to person”
Sleep is essential to good health. Poor sleep quality is a very serious condition that may lead to daytime tiredness, poor concentration, irritability, depression, eating disorders, and metabolic/ hormonal changes. Sadly up to 1 in 3 people in Australia have some form of sleeping difficulty. This may include: • Not being able to get to sleep • Not being able to stay asleep / waking up too early • Waking for long periods in the night • Waking in the morning not feeling refreshed. The average person needs between 8 and 9 hours sleep a night, though the amount an individual requires varies greatly from person to person and this requirement diminishes as you get older. It usually takes about 30 minutes to fall asleep. Causes of a sleep disorder include: • Temporary insomnia as a result of recent worries, work stress, family problems etc. • Sleep apnoea, a potentially serious condition more common in snorers and the overweight, whereby the large airways narrow or collapse restricting oxygen supply to the brain • Depression and mood disorders as well as other mental health conditions • Medical problems such as asthma and heart failure • Pain

• •
Prescribed medications, street drugs, alcohol, caffeine and nicotine can all have an influence on sleep patterns Unfounded concerns about lack of sleep. Some people are very anxious they haven’t had enough sleep when in reality they are getting reasonable quantities of sleep at night even if they wake up several times.
Resolving sleep problems involves understanding the underlying cause. It is always helpful to talk with your general practitioner or health care provider to help establish this. Sometimes further testing may be required, such as having a sleep study to exclude sleep apnoea. It is always helpful to understand the concepts of “sleep hygiene”. This information is widely available on the internet and describes learning about good sleep habits. Lifestyle is very important. Learn relaxation techniques and ensure that there is an appropriate balance of exercise, fun and laughter in your life. A healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and no processed foods is ideal. Your doctor may discuss behavioural and cognitive therapies with you, or in some cases suggest a referral to a psychologist. You may also be offered the option of short term medications, although the long term use of these is not, in general recommended. www.appletreemedical.com.au

PRESSURE NUTRITION BELINDA COLDEBELLA HEALTH KICKS PTY LTD
Did you know that in Australia, men are twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke than women? Unlikely to help this statistic, is the fact that 2 in every 3 men in Australia are now overweight or obese.
you will see a marked decrease in your blood pressure as long as you keep it off. It’s not just about how much you weigh, it’s about where you carry that excess weight – if you carry fat around your middle you are more likely to develop high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
Although men can be hard to get started on a healthkick, once they do, they have great focus and can form new habits quickly. Call it “primeval”, but in my experience men enjoy following clearcut guidelines and if they can incorporate some element of competition they will excel. Whether or not genetics are playing a role OR you need medication for blood pressure, you will still benefit from the following combined lifestyle changes.
Watch the alcohol consumption Regular alcohol intake is associated with high blood pressure. Guidelines for safe drinking are no more than 2 x standard drinks a day and a standard drink = 10gm of pure alcohol (e.g. around 1 x glass of wine or a small bottle of beer). Men often curl their lip in distaste when I suggest a switch to lighter beer, but the truth is that if a regular drinker makes the shift from full-strength to a lower alcohol content they can reduce their blood pressure by about 5mmHg.
Cut excess sodium in the diet The primary source in most food is sodium chloride, the chemical name for ordinary cooking/table salt. Salt can significantly influence blood pressure and processed foods are high in salt (no surprise there). 75% of salt we eat is hidden in foods that we often think are healthy like bread and breakfast cereals. The recommended salt intake is 6 grams per day so read your food labels carefully and aim for between 120–200mg of sodium per 100gm.
Exercise more It’s not rocket science, you must move more! Exercise helps reduce blood pressure and alleviates stress (another factor for blood pressure). Find something active that you like doing. Buy yourself an exercise tracker, it will help you stay motivated and you can compete with yourself daily.
Maintain a healthy weight range It’s simple, lose the excess weight and

Serenity in the
BEDROOM STYLING JAN WARNOCK JOOSH IT UP
Do you wake in the morning to lights, bells and whistles? Or should I say LEDs, ringtones, digital alarms, message pings and Facebook notifications! Have you crammed a home office, some gym equipment or yoga mat in there too? Well it’s time to reclaim that sense of serenity back in your life. After all, the bedroom is the room we go to recharge after a busy day. If you’re wondering where’s the best place to start, try clearing out everything that serves a function, eg laptops, phone charges, filing cabinets. Then bring in the things you love. The Linen Buy the best you can afford. The higher the thread count, the more luxurious the feel. And an all cotton composition will feel even more luxurious than a poly/ cotton mix. The colour? If in doubt choose white. This will allow you to mix and match and swap and change as the seasons/ fashions/likes dictate. Bedside Tables Opt for traditional cabinets or something a bit more quirky (timber chairs, stools, shelving units, display cubes). You need to consider what you’ll use them for, eg. books, candles, flowers. Don’t be tempted to overcrowd this space. Create a “visual vignette” for interest.
40 | www.oasismagazine.com.au
Rugs Place a rug about three quarters of the way under the bed, and ensure it’s about a meter larger than the bed on three sides. This will give a real sense of luxury, a cosy feel, and extra comfort for that first step out of bed every morning. Artwork Think calm, serene and most importantly, something you love. Now the fun stuff – cushions, doonas and throws. Use them to layer and introduce colour. Start at the back with European cushions, then pillows, cushions and throws. You can never have too many cushions. Visit your local furniture showrooms for inspiration. Or why not call in a professional to get you started. www.joosh.com.au

TO MAKE MONEY REAL ESTATE GEENA COURT COURT HOUSE REALTY
Many sellers prepare their properties during the winter months in readiness for the busy spring season, which includes school holidays and the racing carnival. Spring usually proves to be a busy time for the real estate industry, as the warmer weather draws prospective buyers out of the gloom of winter and reinvigorates their property search. The recent decision by the Reserve Bank to leave the cash rate unchanged, the tightening rental market and the affordable prices will also attract more investors into markets throughout Australia However, with talk of the Sydney and Melbourne markets set to plummet in months to come, investors will be looking to purchase in promising areas with the potential of growth such as Cairns. When preparing a property for sale, it’s important to make it as presentable as

possible without overspending. There are various cost-effective ways to improve your property, including applying a fresh coat of paint, bringing your tired winter garden back to life by planting colourful flowers and greenery, and giving your property a thorough spring clean, both inside and out. A property owner who recently asked for an appraisal on his apartment, was given an estimate of $175,000 - $179,000. It was a tired apartment earning a very meagre return. However, after taking our renovation suggestions and spending a total of $10,500 (see below), he is now looking at a sale price of $210,000 $215,000 with marketing costs of $1,500 and a rental return of $550.00 pw. A sale doesn’t have to cost a fortune; you just need the right advice.

ON YOURSELF INSURANCE SHANNON TELLEY INTOUCH INSURANCE
The gap between men and women is closing in most facets of life. But it seems there’s one area females still have some catching up to do – protecting themselves with insurance. I believe the problem lies in the historical notion of the male being the primary breadwinner. There was a time when you only took out insurance on the husband. But not only does this ignore the value of what women do – both at work and at home – it doesn’t reflect the changing nature of the Australian family. Women now earn approximately 92% of male salaries. And despite making up 45% of the workforce, females represent only 15-20% of all insured incomes. This lack of insurance for women doesn’t make sense – particularly when you consider how much more vulnerable women often are financially.
statistically live longer, they can ill-afford extra setbacks. Add illness or injury to the mix, and women can find it incredibly hard to recover financially if something happens to them. That’s where insurance can be so valuable. I would encourage all women, particularly those with a family and/or a mortgage, to review their insurance needs regularly with their financial adviser. Your cover has to keep up with your changing circumstances. There’s no point putting it off until it’s too late. www.intouchinsurance.com.au
This vulnerability stems from less time in the workforce, with women often assuming the role of primary carer of children and/ or elderly relatives. As a result women typically have less savings, and less superannuation than men. And considering women will

Food for THOUGHT EATING LOCAL CUISINE In a move set to alter industry standards in Australia, QT Hotels & Resorts is changing the face of its food supply chain to bring some seasonal and specialised produce straight from the producer to the plate. QT Hotels & Resorts is excited to announce the appointment of Georgie Neal to the newly created role of Forager. The QT Forager role will see Georgie establish a close working relationship with farmers and growers nationwide. This will enable the hip designer hotel group to source fresh, seasonal produce for its award winning restaurants and the QT Resorts interactive marketplace, Bazaar. This concept will see QT Hotels and Resorts continue to lead the way in the Australian hotel restaurant scene.
Georgie is passionate about the importance of supporting local growers. “I’m thrilled to be able to develop a long lasting and mutually beneficial network with growers nationwide who are as passionate about food freshness and great produce as we are,” she said. “With suppliers and supermarkets embroiled in ever-increasing price wars, this new arrangement means that the growers are receiving a better price for their produce. This will be showcased through the high standard of dishes created at QT Hotels by Creative Food Director, Robert Marchetti and the Bazaar teams in the QT Resorts,” continued Georgie. Since its entrance onto the hotel scene in 2011, QT Hotels & Resorts has continued to surprise and delight visitors with its ability to create hotels and resorts which are innovative, inspiring, and truly reflect and promote the regions they operate in.
AHL Group Managing Director, David Seargeant, is looking forward to introducing yet another innovative and creative QT initiative. “We are excited to be supporting our Australian farmers and producers and furthering our reputation for freshness and quality - the appointment of Georgie as QT Forager is an exciting initiative and will allow us to share the background and stories of these producers with our guests”.

TRAVEL Words: Amanda Cranston
Amanda Cranston from travelnq.com discovers a luxurious private retreat just outside Port Douglas

Your private
HIDEAWAY When planning a weekend away, what do you look for? Ocean views, rainforest surroundings, a swimming pool or somewhere quiet? Sometimes the most exquisite getaways are not the most obvious or well-known. There are certainly plenty of beautiful resorts to stay at in Port Douglas. However you may be surprised to learn there are just as many private holiday rental properties offering high end luxury with even more privacy than a resort. The Cassowary is one such property that could easily rival even the most luxurious resorts. Designed by local architect Charles Wright, who also designed the iconic mirrored Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre, the Cairns Institute at JCU and the incredible new science block building at Trinity Anglican School, The Cassowary certainly makes an architectural statement. The peaked rooflines of the retreat can just be seen through the rainforest, being not only a design statement but also a sustainable one as it helps capture the rain too. Specifically designed using eco principles, the retreat also has a five star energy efficiency rating. So what is it that makes The Cassowary such a spectacular property? Set on 40 acres within the Cassowary Valley and nestled in between Port Douglas and Mossman, this beautiful building has been built halfway up the hill with elevated views and complete privacy from surrounding natural rainforest. From the moment you set eyes on The Cassowary as you drive up the long driveway, especially at night when the retreat is all lit up, you can’t help but be seduced by its charm. The entire self-contained retreat is open plan with bi-fold or sliding doors. In true tropical style, these were left open most of the time we were there, we left it open most of the time we were there. It has been designed so each room faces the valley and takes in views of the swimming pool and rainforest, and is accessed by one long, wide balcony. Off the balcony is the main living pavilion which features an enormous, state-of-the-art gourmet kitchen featuring massive bench space and espresso coffee machine, a large dining room and separate lounge area with 63 inch television. And with such high ceilings and so much space throughout, it certainly feels like a private resort. Each bedroom also opens onto the main balcony, with three King suites and two Queen suites in total at the retreat - plenty of room for large families or a couple of families wanting to get away together. We stayed at The Cassowary with another family and it never felt crowded. The Queen suites have two single beds and the two bedrooms at either end of the property open up on two sides to take in the rainforest. It is hard to find the words to explain just how magnificent these end bedrooms are - they really are spectacular. Each has an ensuite with floor-to-ceiling louvered windows and the end bedroom we stayed in, also known as the Honeymoon Suite, had a spa bath in the ensuite and a four poster bed. I absolutely loved waking up to the views of the rainforest and surrounding mountains as the sun came up. And each room had cable television, DVD player, electronic blinds and room dimmer switches. There is also a main bathroom, an extra reading room, an outdoor barbecue area, a laundry, a fully-equipped gym and so many more features. And we were lucky enough to have an in-house massage from Mai Thai Massage in Port Douglas who came out to The Cassowary and gave us a massage during our stay. It was a blissful getaway and so much more private than a resort. The Cassowary is also available for weddings, corporate getaways and wellness retreats. For more information visit www.thecassowary.com

MEET | Heather Ghidella
1. What inspired you to start MyStyle Homes and how long has it been operating? Grant and I started MyStyle because we saw an uncaptured niche in the market. We recognised that people needed to be listened to and heard in the building industry and this has reflected in designing liveable homes, which have now won us many awards. My Style has just celebrated its 4th birthday in March this year. It has been an amazing journey to start a new business and guide it to where it is now. I am humbled and so proud of where we are. 2. What has been the business’s greatest achievement to date? We started in very challenging times when the GFC had just hit and to survive in a tough market is a great achievement. We have also won 2 Australian awards which has been very exciting. For a small builder to win a local or state award is a great achievement, but to win two national awards is very rewarding and I am so grateful. 3. You were recently named Cairns Business Woman of the Year 2014, it must have been rewarding to be recognised on a personal level for your achievements. I found the awards process a very rewarding one. Talking about the business is easy, so to then have to talk about myself was challenging and rather confronting. I then judged this year and to be able to work with and help other business women was a fantastic experience. To be generous to others and help them wherever possible is the experience I truly enjoyed. 4. What motivated you to become involved in this year’s Cairns Corporate Challenge, and what are you hoping to achieve? My motivation was a combination of friends and champagne, isn’t this when all the best decision are made? I love a challenge and those who know me know I am never one to shy away from a challenge. To have this experience with an amazing group of people, the ups and downs, and being there for each other is something I am looking forward to. 5. What do you enjoy most about living and working in Tropical North Queensland?
Heather Ghidella Joint owner of MyStyle Homes and Cairns Business Woman of the Year 2014. 50 | www.oasismagazine.com.au
I love the lifestyle here, it is very relaxed and that suits my personality. I am passionate about our region and this helps me design homes for tropical living. I love meeting people to talk about their dreams, I love inspiring them with what is possible and as I am passionate about building green. If I can educate them on what is possible, that makes me happy. I love simple design ideas and features that don’t have to cost thousands but they just work and suit the tropics. As a business we are agile so we are able to change quickly. I never stay still and I love to keep innovating, so it just works. What I find the most rewarding and what I get the biggest kick out of is watching the enjoyment and excitement when people walk into their new home.
