In the early years of the 1900’s, there were signs that read, “Whites only and no colored people allowed.” Racism was alive and enforced long after slavery was abolished. The unfair treatment of African Americans was horrific. African Americans were tortured, abused and mis-treated. To fight the injustice, there were civil rights movements that included the non-violent protest of Martin Luther King and the “by any means necessary” stance of Malcom X. Even after the civil rights movement of Martin Luther King, his plight of “We Shall over Come,” didn’t progress until after his assassination. Today, we still fight for equal rights. The nation accomplished a lot under the leadership of our black president, Barrack Obama. The discrimination of health care was resolved and the economy was stabilized.
