LISBON The name comes from "Olissipo", which has its origins in the Phoenician words, meaning "enchanting port". Lisbon has, of course, strong Arabic influences; it was, after all, occupied by the Moors for 450 years. In the 12th century the Christians reconquered the city but it was not until the mid-13th century that Lisbon became the country's capital. During the 15th century, Lisbon developed into a spice and jewelers trade center. The breakthrough for Portuguese expansion came in 1498 when Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India. This was indeed the beginning of a golden age, characterized by the Manueline architectural style, named after King Manuel I, with its typical decorative use of maritime motifs. Over the centuries Lisbon naturally grew and changed. The Baixa Pombalina was all rebuilt on 1755 and still retains much of its original character. The city has also grown progressively to the north, and areas such as the Expo '98 are typical of this development. The town is divided in 5 parts with particular interest for tourists/visitors. Av. Liberdade + Baixa/Chiado - City center (business and shopping) Alfama - the oldest part of Lisbon Bairro Alto - another old part, also situated on a hill. Belém - the monumental part of Lisbon. Parque das Nações - the Nations Park (former Expo-98 area)

SINTRA Sintra is an inexhaustible attraction!
The perfect symbiosis between nature and its built heritage led to its classification by UNESCO as World Heritage, at the category of Cultural Landscape, in 1995. The town has been adored over the years by artists and writers from all over the world and the passion for the town reached its peak in the 19th century, in the heart of the romantic era. Sintra has become a major tourist attraction, with many day-trippers visiting from nearby Lisbon. Attractions include the fabulous Pena Palace (19th c.) and the Castelo dos Mouros (reconstructed 19th c.) with a breath-taking view of the SintraCascais Natural Park, and the summer residence of the kings of Portugal Palácio Nacional de Sintra (largely 15th/16th c.), in the town itself. The Sintra Mountain Range, one of the largest parks in the Lisbon area, (Serra de Sintra) is also a major tourist attraction. In 1809 Lord Byron wrote to his friend Francis Hodgson, "I must just observe that the village of Sintra in Estremadura is the most beautiful in the world.“ The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its 19th century Romantic architecture.

PORTO Porto also known as Oporto in English, is Portugal's second city and the capital of Norte region. It is, along with Lisbon, one of Portugal's two global cities. The city is located in the estuary of the Douro river, in northern Portugal. Being the largest city in the region, it is considered its economic and cultural heart. With an estimated population of about 220,000, it lies at the center of the political Greater Metropolitan Area of Porto, with a population of slightly more than 1.7 million and is the main agglomeration of northern Portugal. The city of Porto comprises 15 civil parishes. The historic center of Porto was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. One of Portugal's most internationally famous products, Port wine, is named after the city because it is produced in, and shipped from the area or, more precisely, from Vila Nova de Gaia, a city just across the river which belongs to the same conurbation. The Latin name of Porto, Portus Cale, is the origin of the name "Portugal" for the whole country. In Portuguese, the city is usually referred to with the definite article as "o Porto" (the port), hence the English name "Oporto".

ALGARVE Â
Wherever you look, the colours of the mountains and sea are always with you, creating the impression of a water-colour dotted with highlights of gold, green and blue. The region is an extensive and pleasant one, with a Mediterranean climate, marked by the smell of the sea at low tide and the scent of wild flowers. A stroll through the tangled web of narrow streets, alleys and steps to be found away from the coast is the best way of getting to know this part of the region. But you can also easily lose yourself in the vastness of the coastal strip. Here the backdrop is composed of some of Europe's most beautiful beaches. After the enchantment of the landscape, you can discover the aromas and flavours of the traditional Algarve cuisine. Only a step away from the tranquil peace of the inland region is the excitement of the Algarve nightlife. Bars, discos, marinas and casinos guarantee visitors the very best kind of merrymaking. Also to be recommended is the range of outdoor sports that are available, whether you're playing golf on lush green courses or enjoying some physical exercise at some of the region's excellent facilities, whether you're on the coast or perhaps up in the hills, where, after the rigours of winter and even before the first signs of spring, the land is covered in a pinkish white blanket, produced by the blossom of the almond-trees scattered across the horizon. This is the true portrait of an Algarve that you'll find waiting for you, all year round.

MADEIRA
There are few destinations able to ideally blend outstanding hotels and meeting facilities with exceptional leisure activities and Madeira is one of them. Year-round sunshine and the warm spring temperatures make Madeira an exceptional retreat from the harsh Northern Europe winters. Unspoilt countryside, the peace and tranquillity combined with the warmth of the people, are high on the list of reasons why many visitors return year after year. This is a fascinating landscape, with its high mountains and deep valleys covered by exotic vegetation and colourful flowers. Add to these attractions the charm of the small villages and the cosmopolitan rhythm of the capital, Madeira, and you have plenty of good reasons to set off and explore every corner of the island. Visitors can choose the elegance of the island's time-honoured traditional hotels or opt for one of the more recent forms of accommodation or the traditional hospitality of country houses or enjoy the service at one of Madeira’s cosy quintas. All Madeira's hotels are famed for their hospitality, personalised service, good taste and quality. Thanks to its fertile soil and abundant fish, Madeira's traditional dishes are very healthy. Fish dishes, like scabbard fillet, tuna steak and “escabeche” tuna, and meat dishes like the traditional brochette and marinated meat, accompanied by the traditional fried corn and tasty bolo do caco bread, are a must for visitors to the island. There are restaurants for all tastes, from the most modern and sophisticated eateries with international cuisine to regional restaurants and welcoming, traditional taverns. Whatever the option, there is always a common theme to the choices: the art of making you welcome! We hope you will enjoy this Madeirian experience!
MADEIRA ISLANDS
AZORES “A remote location — about a thousand miles west of continental Portugal – has helped limit tourist traffic and development in this unspoiled North Atlantic archipelago. The nine major islands — connected by ferry service in summer, are home to green volcanic mountains, mineral hot springs, hydrangea-covered hills, rambling vineyards, white-washed seaside towns, cobblestone lanes, and traditional Flemish and Moorish windmills. Terceira (“the lilac island”) is known for its weaving tradition and 50 brightly painted imperios (empires), ornate chapels of the Holy Spirit. São Miguel, the biggest island, includes Ponta Delgada (the Azores' largest city), secluded black and white sand beaches, and natural steam vent ovens at Furnas Lake where Portuguese cozido (stew) is cooked in earthen pots buried along the volcanic shoreline. Faial, named “the blue island” for its abundant hydrangeas and blue-trimmed homes, features numerous grottoes, caves, churches, and museums, as well as the bustling Horta marina, a popular stopover point for transatlantic yachtsmen. May to September is the island-wide festival season with numerous religious processions and cultural events celebrating patron saints, the sea, and the local whaling heritage.”
