Tablets are taking over! In yet another example of the growing popularity of the tablet, Intel has recently launched the Intel Studybook tablet as their latest classroom computer. The Intel Studybook is equipped with Intel’s Learning Series software, along with other exciting features such as an interactive e-reader and LabCam applications. “Students today live in a virtual world, and this device can give a valid scientific experience for students in emerging economies,” says Wayne Grant, director of research and planning for Intel’s Education Market Platforms Group. The 7-inch screen, 1060x600 tablet is built rugged enough to be dropped 70 centimeters, the height of a child’s desk, onto concrete. This tablet is outfitted with a single piece of plastic with shock absorbers surrounding the screen to withstand drops, water, and dust. More than 7 million children in more than 2,000 classrooms in 36 countries around the world currently use Intel PCs. Intel licenses original design manufacturers throughout the world in the countries where the device will be used, so not just anyone can purchase these new devices. “An Intel Studybook offers students limitless opportunities to enhance their learning experience,” says Kapil Wadhera, General Manager of Intel’s Education Market Platform Group. “Expanding the Intel Learning Series Portfolio of affordable, purpose-built educational devices brings us closer to our vision of enabling more students and teachers to participate in high quality education,” Wadhera said. But new technology by itself isn’t enough to help students learn. A recent study covering the One Laptop Per Child initiative found that, due to insufficient teacher training with new technologies, the expectations of higher math and language scores were not met. Launching a new tablet may spark up new interest, but Intel recognizes that it is also necessary to train the teachers how to www.tnblive.com/print/796
