SKY is a sisterhood of teenage Girls all across Botswana. Becoming a SKY Girl means taking the pledge to define your Sures (things you love) and Shapos (things you don’t need in your life)

What Sets SKY Girls apart? We are not swayed by peer pressure, instead, we make choices that are true to ourselves and we stick to them. Whatever our Sures

and Shapos are, we stand by them, because those choices define us, and make each one of us unique. To become a SKY Girl you need to take the pledge and live by it.

How do I take the pledge? Inbox us on our FACEBOOK page @skygirlsbw and send us your details.

I pledge to be true to myself and what I believe in. To be who I am, not who someone else thinks I should be. I will say Sure Ka Yone to the things that I am all about – like standing up for my friends and following my dreams. I will say Shapo Ka Yone to the things I am good without – like smoking and backstabbing. I will make choices that are true to me. I will follow my skyline. I pledge to find my SKY.

Summer By Cocoa Fayy

ooaaaahhh summer is here!!! *sips Oros with ice. The season we have all been waiting for is here! It’s important to feel comfortable and still look fresh and cute. Here’s a few tips from your faves, and how they slay the summer. Remember to drink your water and wear those sun hats that match your outfits!

Zendaya is bringing the heat this summer with a crop top and skirt outfit. The heels finish the look for us. Re sure ka great fashion sense, and definitely rocking it. Wearing a long skirt with a cute belt makes the crop top pop just a little more and definitely gives it that neat finishing touch! A messy bun to go with it would definitely make your outfit stand out and gape it gets a lot of air coming in and more of your beautiful face out there. Go slay them girl!

Vicky Vee is rocking these subtle shorts and plain white vest. Super cute and gorgeous. Perfect for a study picnic at the park or even a day at the mall. Slip into cute slides and you are good to go! It’s a cute simple look, and super comfy as well! Definitely an outfit ready to be kissed by the sun but don’t forget that sun screen to protect that brown skin!

Kefilwe Mabote is serving us flames with her summer suit! This outfit is cute and is also great for a girl’s day out. Something about this outfit screams elegant but humble and that’s a summer look you definitely want to portray. Jumpsuits aren’t usually tight and that’s another plus for summer. O tshwere your cold lemonade and passionfruit with your girls… definitely Insta-feed worthy.

Here we have Kendall Jenner killing this shirt dress! It’s a pretty simple and cool outfit - super cute and looks even better accompanied by lots of accessories like a necklace. Definitely finish the look with some shades, throw on a jean jacket and some sneakers and you out!

Tadiwa Tafa is a 15-year old motor bike rider from Gaborone who has won several medals and trophies in local races, and obtained an overall second place in the ladies category for the Botswana Motor Sports Championship for the years 2018 and 2019. She has also competed in the 2019 Motocross of African Nations in Zimbabwe, as part of the Botswana National Team.

H

ow did you get into riding bikes? My father had a quad bike and used to take my brother and I riding when we were about six years old, to a track where we would watch other riders with their different bikes ride around the track. My interest to ride motor bikes started then, and grew as the years went by. At about 8 years of age, I started riding a quad bike at my Grandfather’s farm. This was a Suzuki 250cc, and my brother and I would take turns riding it the whole weekend at the farm. At the age of 10 my father bought me my first bike which was a Suzuki 65cc two stroke. This is when I started riding a two wheeler motorbike, in 2015. My father would take us to the track every weekend to ride with him, and I became more and more confident. I made many friends the same age as me at the track who were riders too and some had already started participating in local and international races. And when did you start racing? I only started racing properly in 2018. I am now riding a KTM 125cc two stroke and I participate more in motocross races. I have raced in both categories held in Gaborone, Jwaneng, Moshupa, Malotwane and Khawa. I have also participated in one race in Zimbabwe (MXoAN) representing the national team of Botswana. This was an international race held in 2019, which had teams from about 8 African countries competing. Who do you look up to for inspiration? I look up to a woman by the name Taye Perry for inspiration. She has raced in the Toyota 1000km desert race in Botswana and came third overall in the two wheeler category (2019), and also raced in the 2020 Dakar Rally amongst other races.

Where do you see yourself in the future? I wish to see myself having a career in riding and travelling around the world to participate in races and I want to see myself as a top achiever for my country. I also wish to start a riding academy for any other young girls that would love to join the sport. What’s the biggest challenge with riding? The hardest part about being in this sport is balancing my school with my passion for riding. For me, school comes first because education is key to success. School would help me a lot with my riding career and I would not want to mess that up.

Any tips for other girls who are interested in the sport? I would say to other girls that this sport is quite scary but I promise, it is very fun and adventurous. The goal is to enjoy it!

a w i Tad

How does it feel being a girl in a male-dominated sport? Does it affect you? Being in a male-dominated sport is quite pressuring because one would want to see me ride as fast as the boys. But I have actually been motivated by some of the boys that I ride with, who tell me how good and fast a rider I am which encourages me to do better in the sport. What is your favorite thing about riding? My favorite thing about riding is that after heavy rains, you can ride through the big puddles of water and mud. Of course you are going to get wet and dirty, but that is the fun part about riding.

Talita & Tebogo's Interview by Karyn Foya

hat inspired you to go into the food business, how did this story start? Due to high rates of unemployment in Botswana, we paired up to start a low carb diet business. Banting Foodie was started after we realized that there are not enough low carb foods in the market and we found it fit to do something about it. We started our company early this year with the vision to turn our passion for cooking into a business reality. What do you enjoy about your work, and being business owners? Cooking to us is about trying, learning new things and serving people with good and clean food every single day. Getting to see people enjoy every bite of our food keeps us going and also keeps us curious about what the next day has in store for us.

Please tell us about your working relationship, as friends. Is it easy to run a business together? Being friends and business partners is not an easy thing but knowing where to draw boundaries between our friendship and our business has been helpful and keeps us going. We have our differences but with a common goal in mind, we always find ways to deal with them. What achievement are you most proud of in terms of your business so far? Our biggest achievement so far is being recognized and appreciated by Batswana which has resulted in us being interviewed by Duma FM, The Voice and now SKY Girls BW! What are your top 3 tips for setting up and running your own business? Determination, commitment and passion. Be determined, focus on what you want to achieve and be committed to pushing yourself when no one else is around. Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them in order to grow. What would you say to a teenage girl who thinks it’s not possible to start her own business in Botswana? We all have great abilities within us, the problem starts when you limit yourself. Go all out for what you believe in and what you want to achieve, always remember that if you don’t take risks, you will work for someone who does.

Interview by Karyn Foya

W

hat are your favourite forms of art? I’ve always gravitated towards hyper realism and contemporary figurative art. Anything really is possible if you just be yourself and not give into society’s perceptions of who you should be and under which bracket they expect you to fall into. My other favourite forms of art would have to be architecture, SFX makeup and makeup in general. Who do you look up to the most for inspiration? Mr David Magang, the don of Phakalane and the Golf Estate, who is widely acknowledged as an entrepreneurial legend. I aspire to have the same level of grit and perseverance he has to achieve something as big as creating my own empire. What achievements are you most proud of? The most recent award I received which was a High Achievement Award in AS Level Art and Design. I honestly wasn’t expecting this award at all, it really brought my mood up the day I found out! Do you have support from friends and family for your interest in art? They’re some of my biggest supporters, my dad especially, he actually suggested I study architecture a couple of years ago. You’d think that because he’s a virologist I’d be urged to study medicine as would any

child typically in an African household, but thankfully that wasn’t the case. He even suggested I venture into fashion design and continue to pursue being a makeup artist as well. What advice would you give to a teenage girl considering getting into art? Keep at your craft, no matter what that may be and never give up on trying to be the best artist you can possibly be. I didn’t come out the womb painting like Picasso, it took a couple tries as well as time and effort into perfecting my skillset. You’d be surprised at the huge improvement you can make in a year or two or even a couple of months if you keep practicing. As cliché as this may sound, practice makes perfect. Let your imagination run wild with what you want to create! The possibilities are endless! Any form of art goes, from painting, to sculpting and printmaking. Whatever you envision in your mind, simply put pen onto paper, or in this case paint onto canvas. How would you describe 2020 in one word? Tragic. We lost a lot of souls and loved ones this year, some due to this horrific coronavirus and others for different reasons. Hug your friends and family a little tighter next time and be kind to everyone because you never know if that’ll be the last time you see them.

Matheah Molete is a floral designer and owner of Azzani Designs, a company that makes flower walls. Her company has been featured in different publications, including InBusiness, BWunplugged, The Voice, RB2, WCW, and HubTv. What inspired you to create your own business? I love the concept of self-expression and independence. Azzani designs was an outlet to do both - to express the creative energy inside of me, independently. I started Azzani designs in 2018. I love nature (plants and flowers), I had travelled internationally, and I had an “aha” moment, when I saw something similar. So my love for nature and international travel inspiration sparked Azzani design! What do you enjoy most about your work? Self-expression and independence! Did you study something to do with arts and crafts or are you self-taught and do this out of passion? I studied Business Science, Economics and Management, worked in a bank for 5 years, in a treasury department, and this was self-taught. Tell us a bit about the process of creating your flower walls? Is it a challenging task? The design stage includes getting to know the customer’s interest and preference (colors and design). Assembling includes putting up the flowers on a frame as per customer’s preference and quality control. We use over 1000 artificial single flowers to make flower walls, after assembling them, quality control is important, ensuring that flower walls don’t fall, and design is as per client’s request. It can be challenging, but anything driven from passion is no challenge at all.

What would you say to a teenage girl who thinks it’s not possible to start her own business in Botswana? The limitations are only in your mind, anything is possible! Don’t be afraid to try something different. I have received so much support from Batswana. The support and reviews have been phenomenal. What quote inspires you? Life’s battles don’t always go To the strong or faster man But soon or later, the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can. How would you describe 2020 in one word? Reflection.

What is your ultimate goal, business-wise? To grow and evolve, to provide the same quality of flower walls as international flower backdrop providers. Are there any difficulties you have encountered throughout your course of being a business owner? Start-up costs, and convincing clients that artificial flowers are just as good as real flowers.

s we grow older, we start to experience a lot of wonders in the world. We hear people talk about anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and we grow to understand what these mean. We grow to at least, understand that these fall under the umbrella of mental health. Our mental health is a reflection of our state of mind. It includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Consequently, it affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and it influences the choices we make, which is why our mental health is so important. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood, to adolescence, and throughout adulthood. Just as with our physical health, we can experience mental health challenges. These challenges can happen to anyone, have many different signs and symptoms, and can look different in different people. Some common symptoms of a mental health challenges include changes in mood, changes in the way you perceive things, obsessions, fears, and feelings of anxiety. The environment we live in can have a tremendous impact on our mental health, especially when it involves

people we care about, like our family and peers. If you are exposed to an environment that is physically, emotionally, or sexually abusive, you may find yourself feeling worthless or believing that life is not worth living. You may lose your self-esteem, feel as though nothing you do is ever good enough, that you are unlovable, a burden, and this may leave you feeling anxious, sad, empty, irritable, and/or hopeless. You may lose interest in activities that you used to find enjoyable. If this happens, you will notice that hanging out with friends or family doesn’t make you as happy as it used to, playing your favorite sport doesn’t excite you anymore, and your hobbies don’t help you relax or cheer you up as much as they used to. You may start to withdraw from your loved ones, push people away so that you can be alone most of the time, sleep more than usual or less than usual, and lose or gain a significant amount of weight unintentionally due to a change in appetite. These changes in sleeping and eating patterns can affect your energy levels, you may be more active than usual, to a point where you speak faster than usual and are restless most of the time, or you may be constantly fatigued even after sleeping for several hours. You may be fearful of being laughed at for saying the wrong answers in class. You may worry about being accepted by your peers, about your future, and you may also worry about how your parent will respond to the marks that you scored in a test, some may even fear going home or to school because of the kind of environment they have been exposed to.

Mental health challenges can manifest as physical symptoms such as fast heart rate, difficulty breathing, stomach aches, headaches, dizziness, and tense muscles. It takes so much effort and bravery to step forward and admit that you may not be able to handle these challenges all on your own. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking someone for help. We might be afraid to speak up because we might think that we are bothering others, or we fear that people will think that we are weak. It is important to note that asking for help takes courage and will never be a sign of weakness. Developing a healthy lifestyle, where we take care of our physical wellbeing can also have a significant impact on our mental health. Additionally, we need to engage in positive self-talk. “I have control over my life.” “I am smart.” “I am beautiful.” “I am unique.” “I have a purpose!” Telling yourself these affirmations every day is the best reminder that you have power and worth. The journey to better mental health is not always an easy one. This is why we have organization such as Botswana Network for Mental Health, UB psychology clinic, BONELA, and LEGABIBO, which you can reach out to for mental health support.

ou are beautiful, unique, precious and worthy because you were created in the image of God. Please don’t doubt whether you add value to the world, because you do. You are the first of your kind and the last there will ever be. Don’t worry about being bullied for being short, there is nothing you can do about it, dynamite comes in small packages and the bullies are just insecure and are trying to dim your light, do not let them win. Teacher is wrong when he says “Thabo bullies you because he likes you”, someone who likes you isn’t supposed to treat you like that. Pulling your hair, twisting your arm and throwing things at you? Someone who likes you is kind to you and helps you, so talk to someone, tell your guidance and counselling teacher or mama le papa. Always be kind to everyone, and remember mama is right about “books before boys”, you have your whole life ahead of you to date, when you are more mature it will be more fun because you will know yourself better and also know what you want in life. Remember what happened to your classmate who fell pregnant and had to unfortunately drop out of school? It was so sad, all her dreams of being a doctor were put on hold, so mama is right, when you are older you will be able to make the right decisions about what you want and do not want. Keep up your love for drama, it’s great to have a hobby so that you don’t focus on books, books, books all the time and so you stay off the streets. It was so much fun when you travelled to Zimbabwe as part of ‘Magosi little theater’ and your play won the competition, right? It’s also very nice going into character when you are on stage and you don’t have to be your shy self, it feels like escaping into a magical world where everything is perfect and is also a medium for you to build your confidence to stand in front of an audience. Keep up the great work, all this training will help you in your work on radio, TV, and on stage in the future. Study hard and keep the awards rolling so you can achieve your dream of studying performing arts. Your parents are right, the world is your oyster, pass your form 5 and go to tertiary. Smile and walk tall baby girl, the world is waiting for your magic. It’s possible, believe it! I love you.
