Real Life Lessons
YouTube Playlists
Once every 2 weeks we produce a resource that aptly we call “Real Life Lessons – From Truck Drivers at Work.” This is a unique resource that can either be distributed to each of your drivers or used as content for safety meetings. Each issue provides a brief summary of an actual incident in which a driver was injured, and then discusses some of the lessons learned from that mishap.
These online safety videos are collected from variety of sources and address issues relevant to injury prevention within the trucking industry.
Online Training Midwestern Insurance Alliance has partnered with the leading provider of online safety training content for the trucking industry (Vertical Alliance) to offer policyholders a discount for the Infinit-i Learning Management System.
Streaming Safety Videos Midwestern Insurance Alliance has partnered with Wumbmus Corporation to provide streaming safety videos on-demand. As always, access to our video library is completely free for Midwestern’s policyholders.
24 Midwestern Insurance Alliance
Safety Meeting Handouts These resources are intended to be printed and distributed to employees to supplement the spoken content of safety meetings. Although most are oriented toward drivers, some address hazards in the shop/garage and the warehouse.
Safety Devices Midwestern Insurance Alliance does not sell safety products, but because of our trucking industry focus, our safety consultants are aware of products that are marketed to prevent injuries to professional drivers, mechanics, and warehouse workers. Our “Safety Devices” page should be your first stop if you want to know what products are on the market to address specific injury hazards in the trucking industry. A number of these products are available to policyholders as a discounted rate.
Simulation Training Tools Spice-up your driver training with these simulation training tools developed by the Trucking Injury Reduction Emphasis (TIRES) of the Washington Department of Labor & Industries. These programs are interactive and use computer-aided graphics to address key issues relevant to driver injury prevention.
Driver Health and Wellness One of the most significant problems in the trucking industry revolves around the general poor health and physical condition of many professional drivers. The negative impact of poor driver health is far reaching and certainly contributes to the frequency of driver injuries and the speed of recovery. For far too long the trucking industry has turned a blind-eye to the problem. Driving Healthy is a resource to help trucking companies begin to tackle this issue.
no need to reinvent the wheel. In this section we provide simple, concise policies that you can customize to meet the unique characteristics of your company.
Checklists Having checklists helps provide for consistency in training, inspections, and employee observations and other tasks. With that in mind, we provide customizable checklists developed specifically for the trucking industry.
Safety Management Guides This section includes bulletins, white-papers, articles and other documents providing guidance to safety directors in addressing a wide range of safety and compliance issues. If you have questions on Safety Resources: Please contact:

Midwestern Trucking Injury Prevention Program (TIPP) Get Certified
This program is only open to trucking companies insured with Midwestern Insurance Alliance. Participation in the program is voluntary.
Distinguishes Your Company – Attaining TIPP certification distinguishes companies that participate, as placing high value on safety. A number of different entities consider commitment to employee safety to be very important. OSHA will even reduce the amount of a penalty if a company is cited for a violation but can demonstrate management commitment to safety. This program not only provides a mechanism for your trucking industry clients to distinguish themselves, but it also provides guidance for developing a structured and documented injury prevention program that clearly provides evidence of management commitment.
Benefits of Certification
Enrollment Process
Below are just a few of the many benefits of attaining certification in Midwestern’s Trucking Injury Prevention Program.
To achieve certification within Midwestern’s Trucking Injury Prevention Program employers simply submit the online certification enrollment form. A loss control consultant will contact the employer to verify completion of the program requirements. Within six (6) weeks of receipt, the employer will be issued a certificate to post prominently in their facility.
Midwestern Insurance Alliance believes strongly that employers get results when they commit to intentional, structured loss control efforts. This is why we developed the Trucking Injury Prevention Program (TIPP).
Eligibility
Prevents Injuries – Implementing each of the elements of this program will help prevent injuries. Improves Morale – Employee injuries (particularly those that result in time off work) disrupt daily work activities of the business, negatively impact morale of the injured employee and his coworkers.Control Claims Costs – The cost incurred by a workers’ compensation claim frequently includes medical treatment, but can also include wage replacement, legal costs, travel reimbursement and a host of other costs defined by state statutes. Implementing each of the elements of this program will help minimize the cost of workers’ compensation claims. Reduces Future Premium – Since the cost of claims can impact insurance premium for the next 4 years, anything that can be done to minimize the cost of a claim (without diminishing the quality of medical care and physical recovery of the injured employee) should be done. Several of the elements of this program specifically target management efforts to control the costs of claims.

15 Ways for Truck Drivers to Get (and Stay) Healthier By Teona Baetu
You just have to glance at driver population statistics and you’ll see that if left unchecked, the truck driver might soon make an appearance on David Suzuki’s list of endangered species. The reasons are familiar. The average driver is over 45. Truckers over 55 outnumber those under 30. The job is largely sedentary and the hours can be challenging. Bad sleep habits wreak havoc and stress builds on itself. And while a driver is sitting, he or she is also being jostled about, so the driver’s musculoskeletal system takes a beating. Risk of diabetes is high. So until that unlikely day arrives when freight gets delivered without human interaction, we’re offering five handfuls — 15 in all — of quick and easy health tips for drivers. Some you can act on today; others might take a bit of prep work. But for the most part, just go for it. You’ll feel better immediately. 1. Check to see if your company offers healthy-living programs for employees. Some have workout facilities at the offices or offer a discount or partial reimbursement for a gym membership. 2. Don’t diet but instead just live a healthier lifestyle. “If you want to get healthy, don’t focus on weight loss, focus on health,” says Siembida. “I want to come at it like weight loss is not my goal, strength is my goal and maintaining strength as I get on in years; and if weight loss comes from that, fantastic!” 3. Start small. ...with one habit you want to change and decide how you are going to change it. 4. Challenge yourself to stick to a goal for at least a month. If you manage to do any healthy activity you want—whether it’s hiking or walking, even if it’s only for a short period of time— that activity will become a habit and part of your new routine. 5. Eat breakfast every day. Eggs, bacon, yoghurt, whatever you like best.
6. Replace chips and chocolate snacks with cut-up fruit pieces, dried fruit, nuts, and seeds.
or fish, make some time for it when you’re on the road. If you can rollerblade and fish simultaneously, good for you!
Fruits like apples and oranges help lower your cholesterol because they have something that dietitians call soluble fiber (also found in oats, barley and eggplant, to name a few).
12. Walk.
7. Cook for yourself. It’s cheaper. And having more money in the bank relieves stress.
Or jog. Around your rig. And if there isn’t space for you to run or walk but you want to anyway, you can walk or run on the spot. Use music to make it more enjoyable. 13. Your mom was right about posture.
8. No Pop.
Sit up straight in your chair and make sure your shoulders aren’t slouched forward. See? You feel better just thinking about it.
Replace soda with juice or, preferably, water.
14. Stay in touch with the folks back home.
9. White Out
Anything that eases stress keeps you healthier. And there are more ways to do it than ever before.
Try to cut sugar, flour and salt out of your diet. 10. Work at making sleep easier. No caffeine before retiring, no heavy meals just before hitting the hay. 11. Take your hobby with you on the road. A hobby can help you relax; it will relieve stress and make you sleep better, while all the while having fun. If you rollerblade
15. What can also help you get a better sleep is a routine. If, before you go to bed, you read for 10 or 15 minutes, your body will get in that routine and falling asleep will come easier. Avoid watching tv or surfing the ‘Net before bedtime because those activities can be stimulating and may prevent you from falling asleep. Reading is a much better relaxant.
