I
nfertility is a public health priority, declared Maurizio Macaluso, MD, DrPH, from the Division of Reproductive Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as he laid the ground for a symposium at the 2010 meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. In 2002, “2 million women in stable relationships could not conceive, despite trying for 12 months,” said Dr Macaluso, describing the rationale for making infertility a priority. A National Action Plan for the Prevention, Detection, and Manage-
ment of Infertility was completed in 2010 by 135 national and international experts, with the goal of promoting and preserving the ability of Americans to conceive naturally and the ability of American women to carry a pregnancy to term and deliver a healthy child. One particular area of focus is the prevention of pelvic inflammatory disease by means of chlamydia screening, an infectious disease that can affect fertility; such screening may lead to reduced rates of tubal scarring and infertility, although the impact of chlamydia screening on infertility rates remains to be determined. s the staff of the Valley Hospital Fertility Center in Paramus, NJ, celebrates the milestones of a 10-year anniversary and helping to create 1000 babies, Margaret M. Robinson, RN, Director of Fertility and Embryology Services, took time to talk with the Infertility & Reproductive News about the center and its services.
Could you tell us about the history of the clinic? The Valley Hospital Fertility Center was originally put together in 2001 as a satellite affiliate of New York University (NYU) Fertility Center in New York City.
