very year, approximately 600,000 children in the United States are born to low-income, first-time mothers. These families are at the greatest risk for health, educational, and economic disparities. Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), an evidence-based program that links registered nurses (RNs) to this vulnerable population, empowers new

mothers to overcome challenges to their health and well-being. NFP was created more than 30 years ago to support low-income women who are pregnant with their first child. Through regular home visits with an RN, NFP helps mothers to achieve a healthy pregnancy, improve the health and development of their babies, and provide

Based on the most recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data, teen birth rate continued to drop in 2009, with a national average of 39.1 per 1000 women aged 15-19 years.

lifestyle changes, such as proper management of diet with exercise and smoking cessation. The ACA will assist in making wellness and prevention services affordable and accessible. Health plans will be required to cover preventive services, for which cost-sharing, such as copayments and deductibles, will be eliminated. This will enable individuals to seek preventive services that will help them to avoid illness and disease. Planning to provide preventive services on a large scale means that we are going to need the services of more primary care providers. What does this mean for nurses? recent article stated that the new healthcare reform, known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), has paved the way for nurses to advance their careers by providing more financial support than ever before.1 As our country changes the trend of healthcare as we see it today, and moves toward a focus on wellness and prevention rather than on illness and cure, nurses are going to play a vital part in implementing this change.
