Introducing Building Tech.

Winter Semester, 2013 Itome Obieromah, Timoty Pruvoost, Lucas Vandeneede, Stephanie Van Lembergen Tutor(s) Jozef Bator, Architecture Dieter De Vos, Architecture Building technology should make architectural concepts happen, not kill them. That was the rationale for implementing structures, building regulations and utilities into this proposal for the Reading Centre Karlova Ves made during my bachelor studies at FA STU. The result is a contemporary building that can be realized without reducing expectations of the architecture initially intended.

From Lagos to Two Park Benches

Winter Semester, 2014 Tutor(s) Volkmar Mühleis, Institute of Philosophy Wim Goes, Architecture Reverse perspective is up for discourse. In terms of linear perspective, representation of space, hence of depth, is subject matter. “Shall I then reverse you depth? “, was the big question. The project seeks inspiration from the mayhem of traffic in my home, Lagos City. In Lagos, I found that I often associate depth with time, and to me, time is a certain kind of expectation. This is mostly observed when assessing the distance from place to place. Physical depth becomes secondary to plausible circumstances. Therefore, my expectation constantly changes. At first glance, the scene of two park benches seems to be a tranquil one- this is the expectation I wanted to create, albeit it is a false one. By placing two benches so close to one another, so close that another person`s actions affect you on one hand, but far enough to prevent discomfort on the other hand, feelings associated with refuge in the outdoors; like visiting a park or appreciating solace while overlooking a pond are distorted. This happens in the least obvious way - that is my aim.

Re-Thinking Acknaibiche

Summer Semester, 2014 (Voluntary Cause) Niels Decoster, Georgios Ioannou, Itome Obieromah Tutor(s) Brussels Co-corporations Architects An international research and design week, related to the International Master of Science in Architecture. This explorative week aimed to develop hands-on and practical experience of vernacular building techniques and to apply this knowledge in collaboration with local community members on several punctual designs for the sustainable development of the village of Aknaibiche, Morocco. Besides opting for a feasible method of handling resources considered as waste surrounding the site, the project searches for a way forward in regards to connote the critical regional language of architecture in Acknaibiche. Two brick prototypes were made. By using locally sourced materials for their manufacture, objects found around the site were given new light- they became salient features upon which the architecture was conceived, adding a contextual layer to it. These were suggested as modules for construction of the newly proposed school wall. The result is an architecture that merges local complexity and culture with a contemporary rationale to become idiosyncratic to place.

Panenska 26

Summer Semester, 2014 Tutor(s) Jan Dekeyser, Architecture The goal is to restore a rundown baroque town house in Bratislava`s city center. Within the framework of architectural artificial light, I decided to re-visit old work of mine. Interplay of light gives a subtle hierarchical dimension to the design, adds depth, and emphasizes the intent.

Lightness

Summer Semester, 2014 Tutor(s) Patrick Lints, Architecture The goal of the structures` studio was to create a light weight structural solution that could cover 100sq.m and could be repeated 100 times. This rationale questions the need for making mega structures in single unit. I thought it would be a great idea to simulate what it may be like designing in the tropics. Contrary to the massive construction techniques such as reinforced concrete frames locally used, I opted for something rather airy and light inspired by an archetypical tropical house. This way, not only does this module fulfill a structural purpose, it becomes contextual as well. Low - tech logics are deployed to ensure favourable levels of comfort within the structure. The choice of materials resulted from material lengths available on the market and takes into account the technical skill set of craftsmen. The final design resulting structure is an 8 x 12,5m shed.

Acting in Redundacy- Mestagh House

Summer Semester, 2014 Nina Bockx, Diana Margarido, Itome Obieromah Tutor(s) Wim Goes, Architecture Chotima Ag-Ukrikul, Architecture This studio`s task was to find a redundant situation, capture the essence and act upon it subtly to achieve maximal results. As found, we named this house after its owner, Belgian renowned glass artist, Mr. Mestdagh. It is a collection of houses in a hidden alley he had purchased over time. He lived there alone and intended to relocate to another property of his choosing. However, this proved rather difficult due to the profile of property he was interested in and political hurdles. This situation became of essence. Design had no role to play. This gave motive to a manifesto of change. The project takes on the possibility of working beyond architecture`s constraints as it is often associated with buildings. The result led to co - habitation of dwellers of common interests in the house in exchange for its re-branding to Mestdagh House, up-holding his legacy and using that as leverage in negotiations for his desired property from the municipality. The result is reshuffles the city`s housing stock, density is addressed and social cohesion achievedAll done without building anything new.

Wohnen Op Zuidplein

Winter Semester, 2014 Tutor(s) Dieter De Vos, Architecture The aim of this design was to explore the advantages and challenges of designing a city block as an urban ensemble. In contrast to the existing Gent Zuid Mall building which poses as a mega block, this proposal comprises of a variety of multi-building types including a low-rise mixed use building to anchor Lamerstraat, a multi-purpose hall and 5 town houses. Finely crafted living spaces and roof terraces take full advantage of eye catching views onto Muinkschelde and prominent towers of the historic center. Internally, it provides a range of possibilities due to its territorially hierarchical division of space on a collective courtyard. To the south, opposite the newly proposed square, the ensemble becomes porous in its character. This influences streetscape positively by introducing daily life on the square. This way, the ensemble and its surrounding become part of the city`s urban fabric in terms of scale and provide a place residents and visitors can relate to better.

A Playhouse of Nothing

Summer Semester, 2015 Master`s Project - Distinction, Van Hove Award Nominee Academic Promoter Tomas Ooms, Architecture Quality of public space is up for discourse. Within the framework, public space is defined as a place to simply be; a place where strangers meet but also a space capable of public activity. To establish a claim, two anti-poles are put in juxtaposition: Tarlabasi and Istanbul. Tarlabasi represents the socially marginalized lower class with inherently rich qualities to show, while Istanbul represents a contemporary hip burgeoning society governed mainly by modernity. Fragmentation, a concept of engineering clearly separates these two poles by infrastructure. This gives motive to the research question: Can urban transformation in Tarlabasi give a new dimension to cosmopolitanism in Istanbul? After all, cosmopolitanism by definition is stimulation by the presence of others, but not identification with them. However, the intention is not to connect, but to enable a dialogue and establish a stage, an open invitation for these two anti-poles to interact. Inspired by effects of the Stoa, Pnyx and Agora, all of which are elements of architecture dating from ancient Greece, democracy of space is evoked and plays a crucial role. Therefore, spaces of inclusion, contemplation and seclusion are provided. This creates interplay between people that overshadows the obvious scene expected in the performance space hence- A Juxtaposition of Two Antipoles: A Playhouse of Nothing.
