COVER FEATURE
Tell us about yourself I am a professional Rwandan makeup artist and a visual painter. I studied art at Kigali International Arts School. I am single and the last born of five children. Why makeup artistry I naturally love art, which is why I chose to join an arts school instead of a university, and it is where my passion for makeup came from. I would help my friends and sisters to do their makeup, they appreciated my work and would post photos of my makeup effort on social media. I started receiving calls from people who wanted me to do their makeup, which inspired me to take it on as a job and earn a living from it. My family then helped me by providing financial capital. I am inspired by beauty ‘vlogger’ Ellarie. Where did you get your makeup training? I am absolutely self-taught, I did not attend any makeup school. makeup art is just a flair that I am so passionate about, although I do get some makeup skills from YouTube. My clients and friends recommend me to people because they love my work and that is how I get so many clients. What do you like most about

makeup and what advice do you have for the upcoming makeup artists in Africa? I just love the art of wearing makeup, especially when going to public places, it makes you look and feel beautiful. It is important how makeup makes you feel because it makes you confident. It is a very lucrative job and is fun for me to do because I get to meet lots of people. I love the fact that my clients trust my work. I am now financially independent and do not have to rely on my parents for money. This job, however, requires patience and kindness when dealing with clients because different clients have different demands. So my only advice to those thinking of delving into makeup artistry is for them to be focused, work on their expertise, and love the art. How do you determine what makeup is suitable for a client? I work closely with my clients and my work depends on their choice. I ask them whether they would want the makeup mild or bold, depending on the occasion, although I also have to offer advice at times. In some cases, like video shoots, and TV shows, I depend on the manager’s choice of makeup because he determines how they should look like in front of the camera.

In some cases, like video shoots, and TV shows, I depend on the manager’s choice of makeup because he determines how they should look in front of the camera. What is your philosophy in life? I love making people happy and listening to their needs. I love it when my clients feel more beautiful or appreciate my work every time they look in the mirror. What inspired the cover look we featured in this issue? I just love the way makeup metamorphoses one from one look to another. Makeup is all about change and beauty. That was why I used the butterflies to further prove the fact that professional makeup definitely brings about a healthy metamorphosis in everyone wearing makeup. Any advice for the upcoming makeup artists? Follow your dreams because any job passionately done is a job well done. Work hard, dream big and let determination be your drive. MAKEUP AFRICA | 11

Prime & Set it!

The Setting spray helps to keep the makeup in place the whole day, and it reduces the appearance of ashy makeup and powder. It either keeps it looking matte or dewy. If you sweat or get oily, just get out your blotting paper (blot or press off the excess oil or sweat) and you will have your makeup perfectly intact and flawless as if you have just applied it! The magic touch of the setting spray! I like the setting spray that contains cucumber extract, vitamin A&E, aloe vera extract, and SPF. One should apply or
spray on the entire face after the makeup application, then let it air dry. Repeat this step after another powder application if necessary. As a certified commercial and bridal makeup artist, it is important to carry these two products in your makeup kit. I can advise anybody that has a passion for makeup to have these products. They make makeup application easier, as they help it to last and keep it looking flawless the whole day. Spring is finally here! PRIME, apply some playful colors, and don’t forget to SET that makeup. Thank me later! MAKEUP AFRICA | 19

TIPS TO LONGLASTING MAKEUP
With Miss Jey
Gone are the years of melting, when the makeup foundation would run down your jawline, nose, and even drag your eyebrows down along the temples of the eyes. Recalling that 5 years ago the primer and setting spray did not exist, we had to rely on nongreasy lotion, moisturising gel, and vanishing cream as base or primer (praying that the sun is going to be kind enough not to meltdown the makeup) during the next 3 to 5 hours. As the setting spray did not exist, we would wait for the ashy powder to set into the skin; and once the body heat gives off, the makeup will eventually look dewy and give off a natural glow. The time starts ticking before the makeup

meltdown. Those were the good old days. Well, this 2022; no makeup meltdown time zone! In fact, it should be illegal to have makeup melting in this era. What is the secret? Primer and Setting spray. Every makeup artist and makeup lover knows this is the key to long-lasting makeup wear. The primer helps to spread the foundation on the skin smoothly and evenly, and it keeps it on for a whole day (if no physical circumstances occur). I personally prefer a gel mattifying primer, with some silica and SPF. It is perfect for oily skin and our hot and hush climate. Once the primer is applied, let it dry; and then apply foundation, concealer, and the rest of your makeup as usual.

LOOK YOUNGER AND PRETTIER
With Oyinkan Oni Want to look younger and prettier every day? I know youʼve been drinking a lot of water, eating veggies, and moisturizing your skin frequently but you should try these 7 unconventional tips to achieve a young and flawless natural look always. 1. Cut sugar from your diet The body doesn't need sugar, and according to nutritionists and skin experts, it exacerbates a process called glycation, which accelerates the aging of the skin. I tried this and found that two weeks off the sweet stuff made my skin noticeably clearer and brighter. 2. Take expert advice on your hair color Having a few lighter strands around the face suits almost everyone and will take years off your face. 3. Have your eyebrows shaped Having your eyebrows professionally
shaped – and possibly tinted – is one of those minor beauty revelations that makes you wonder how you ever got by without it before. A defined brow opens and lifts the eye area in a way that's a little short of wondrous. 4. Find the shade of lipstick that suits you. The right color, whether nude-y beige or cerise, will lighten up your face. 5. Whiten your Teeth Treat your teeth like you are a baby. Make a habit of chewing strawberries, it whitens the teeth like magic. 6. Curl those lashes. Any opportunity to fight gravity at your fingertips, you should take. Lashes tend to lose their density as you age and as eyes tend to flatten out. So seize every opportunity you can to add depth. 7. Swap Your Black Eyeliner for Navy The color "will brighten the whites of your eyes, which tend to yellow as you age.
Smile a lot; optimists tend to look younger as they age and donʼt forget the golden makeup rule. Less is More

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Blush me pretty
Can eyeshadow be used as a blush? Eyeshadows can be used as blushes or highlighters. Naturally, most eyeshadows are more pigmented than blushes so be gentle with your brush and make sure you don't apply too much product. If you are using eyeshadow as blush make sure it's either a matte finish or satin finish. Where should you apply blush? The best place to put it depends on the shape of your face. To slim a round face: Sweep it along your cheekbones (suck in your cheeks to locate them) and extend the color out to your temples. To balance a heart-shaped face: Apply blush below the apples (the meatiest parts) of your cheeks and blend out to your hairline. To soften a long face: Blend blush beneath your apples, but not out to your temples.

How Much blush should I Wear? So it’s best to be slightly heavyhanded—a swipe or two past what you think looks natural. “Once you’ve been moving around for a few minutes, your body temperature heats up, which makes even stains begin to fade a bit. So the contrast won’t be as jarring.” What’s the Best Tool for Applying? For creams, fingers work colour into skin best. For powder formulas, a wide-headed loose-powder brush may be more user-friendly than a traditional blush brush, since it’s better at distributing colour. Smooth on gels and stains with a synthetic makeup wedge. What’s the Difference Between Blush and Bronzer? “Blush gives your face a concentrated pop of colour, while bronzer can be used all over your face for a healthy glow. You’ll want to use a lighter hand with bronzer; apply a single sweep wherever the sun would hit: forehead, cheeks, chin, and down the bridge of your nose.

The color wheel can save your life: Color theory is everything for great makeup application. Most of the time we use the wrong colors and undertones for our skin. To master color theory, you need a color wheel. Opposite colors, such as red and green, cancel each other out. So if you have a red rash on your face, applying a green-toned concealer first will make concealing it 10 times easier. It’s also important to take into consideration the undertone of your skin, your eye color, and what works best with them. For example, purple and blue are great colors for making your brown eyes stand out more. Castor oil helps your brows and lashes to grow. You have probably overtweezed your brows and wished you had them fuller. But with Castor oil to the rescue, you can nourish the hairs and help grow them. Just apply a few drops every night to your brows and lashes with a Q-tip and happily watch them grow.

Use a damp beauty blender to apply foundation If you look in any makeup artist’s kit, it’s almost guaranteed you will find a BeautyBlender. This revolutionary makeup sponge’s shape allows you to access every contour of your face. It is meant to be used damp, to allow a flawless application, and to ensure that makeup never looks heavy. It also comes in a variety of colors and even mini-sizes. Set with powder in-between primer and foundation One way to make sure your makeup lasts all day is to set your primer with powder before applying foundation. It sounds odd (since we’ve always been told to never apply liquids on top of powders), but it actually works. Apply your regular face primer and dust a lightweight translucent powder over top. By doing this, you are locking it in, ensuring that the primer won’t slide around and disturb your foundation. But remember, moderation is key, applying too much powder will make the foundation application cakey.

Check your undertone. The rule of foundation makeup is your undertone. For a warm undertone, look for a yellow-based foundation, for cool undertones, get a foundation with a pink base. If the veins on the inside of your wrist are bluish, you're cooltoned. If they're greenish, you're warm-toned.
6
You can mix your foundation for lighter coverage. Moisturizer is a great way to sheer out your heavy foundation. Mix an equal amount of each—one pea-sized dot of foundation and one of moisturizer mixed together on your palm. Mixing foundation with moisturizer is an easy way to get lighter coverage options.
7
There is a perfect red lippie for you. "If you want to find the perfect red colour for your complexion, try applying one lip colour that has the same undertone as your complexion all over the lip: Cool-tones use cool colours, warm-tones use warm colours. Apply a red with the opposite tone just to the center for a lip that looks full.

Get a clean beat by applying eye makeup before face makeup No worries about powder shadow fallout on cheeks or under-eye liner smears that can “dirty” foundation, blush or concealer and require a redo. Prepping lids with a primer or cream shadow first will keep eye makeup fresh and guarantee a smoother, more even application. Add saline solution to a flaky mascara formula to re-wet it. You're only supposed to keep mascara for three months because beyond that point, it can collect bacteria and lead to eye infections. However, if your mascara dries up within those three months, revive it with a couple of drops of saline solution. Mix loose pigments with a salve or petroleum jelly to make your own custom lip gloss. If you have loose eyeshadow pigments that you're obsessed with and want to wear as a lip shade, blend it with a little bit of a salve, like VMV Hypoallergenics Boo-Boo Balm, VMV Hypoallergenics Boo-Boo Balm, or petroleum

jelly in a spoon and swipe it onto your lips. And Voila! you will be rocking your own brand of lip gloss Tone It Down “If you have applied eye shadow that is a little too intense, don’t remove, just dip a shadow blender brush in the bronzing powder, and sweep across the entire lid. The bronzing powder will work as a neutral tint, so it will diffuse and soften the colour without changing it too radically.” Finishing Touch. Give your face one last glowing touch. Grab an illuminating powder and lightly dust your face to set the look. Make sure the powder is shimmery and not glittery, as we are avoiding anything that will make you look oily.

Pout it Up! It would never do to accompany your radiant face with dull, lifeless lips, would it? Top off your look by giving your pout some subtle colour with a soft pink gloss.

Too much powder? Mist it. Wondering what to do after setting your makeup with too much powder on your face? Lightly mist your face with a facial mist. After spraying, use a makeup sponge and gently dab it over the skin to remove any excess powder. Whew, how did that feel? Life-saving right!

Beauty made just for you With Adekunbi Fashakin Beauty they say lies in the eye of the beholder & depending on your perception of what a beautiful face actually is, there’s no ugly person. What we have are various face shapes, facial features & complexions. Have you seen a lady with white eyeliner in her lower waterline & you’re wondering what’s off about her look but can’t really place it? Well, that’s most likely because she has large eyes & using the white eyeliner (which is supposed to help small eyes appear larger), further widens the eyes. This article will focus on the various types of face shapes, their unique features & how they should be considered when trying to achieve sultry makeup looks. The common face shapes are SQUARE, TRIANGLE, OVAL, DIAMOND & CIRCULAR & using popular techniques like CONTOURING AND HIGHLIGHTING should take the face shape into consideration. For the square-shaped face, the width of the temples is close to the width of the jawline making the jaws a little more pronounced

Beauty made just for you than in other faces. Contouring is done by shading the sides of the temples and the jaw bones to achieve a more oval result with less attention to the jawline while highlighting is kept to the center of the face. The triangular-shaped face has a unique feature where the forehead is much narrower than the jawline similar to a triangle. To make the face a lot rounder, the sides of the temples are highlighted while the forehead and jawline are shaded. When it comes to the oval-shaped face, that’s what the makeup artists call the perfectly sculpted face. It requires no contouring or highlighting except the face is Oblong ( which is a slightly longer version of the square shape ) The diamond-shaped face ( I fall into this category ) has the cheekbone as the widest part of the face with the chin being the narrowest. In this case, contouring is applied at the cheekbones and forehead to reduce the width and soften the angles. Where would we be without the other face shapes that are available? So whatever your face shape is, there’s a particular technique just right for your face. Please look through the face shape chart on the next page, to identify your face shape & how best to shade your less-liked & bring forward your beautiful features to a truly sculpted look.

I knew makeup had no age limit as there are always different technics in this field, and the income is good everyone loves to look good as there is no compromise with looks. That’s the reason why I chose make-up. Did you attend any school or are you self-taught? Oh yes, when I decided I wanted to become A Makeup Artist, I joined a makeup school in India VLCC INSTITUTE OF HEALTH AND BEAUTY in 2008, I started learning from scratch to advance, then the institute took interest in my talent and started sending me to different cities including makeup jobs in Bollywood industry too. Up until then, I was using Indian makeover techniques, then the Airbrush makeup was introduced to the industry, it is like a spray and it is used to apply the base and do the rest of the makeup, so I did not waste much time learning that too. In 2013 I decided to travel internationally and learn more about different styles of makeup, so I got a chance to visit Singapore, where I learned more techniques from different people, with different preferences, After that, I went to Dubai to learn Arabian makeup, semipermanent Eyelash extensions, and 3D Highbrow. In 2014 I came back to dar es Salam. MAKEUP AFRICA | 42

In 2018 I won a live demonstration makeup competition called Project Fx Africa (Tanzania Edition) and in 2021 I won the Swahili Fashion week makeup artist of the year 2021 award, all these were my dreams coming true. Who are your major clients? My clients are all mixed. I have worked with all different people, different casts, and in different communities. It has been a major experience in these 14 years since I started the Make up profession. I have worked with Indian Bollywood actors to tv serial artists, I have worked with Indian models and Mrs. India, and I have also worked with models in Tanzania and celebrities too like Platnumz. Mokeira Oyaro
My name is Oyaro Brenda Mokeira, a professional freelance Makeup Artist based in Nairobi Kenya. I have always had a passion for arts, I recently finished my degree in Bachelor of Arts Fine Art, at Kenyatta University. While in campus i worked at a makeup counter. It is then that I discovered my passion for makeup as well. With no formal training,i perfected my talent as the years passed.
KENYA
What is your name? Brenda Mokeira Oyaro Where are you from? I am a Kenyan citizen. I was born in a county called Embu in Kirinyanga County on the 25th of February 1994. Raised in Nakuru City and currently residing in the Capital City Nairobi. How long have you been in make-up? I started getting seriously into makeup when I joined University, specifically in the second year, that is May 2016. This is going to be my 6th year in the makeup business. Why make-up? Honestly growing up I was never a girlie girl. I was a complete tomboy. I would play boy games such as football, climb trees, and ride bikes. It was never makeup and barbie dolls, but one thing I was really good at from the get-go was art. I would draw on walls I work cut out cartoons from a new paper, I have always been artistic. Painting on canvas and makeup on the face have the same theory, this fact has always been so interesting to me. Makeup allows me to visually express my personality and moods. The way it transforms a face and enhances the best features has always had something otherworldly about it. With so many colors, textures, finishes, and techniques to try, makeup allows me to get as creative as I would like, and to fully express

my inner world. Being an introvert, my work speaks for me, I have been mentioned in rooms I will never reach. Did you attend any school or are you self-taught? I have a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art and Design from Kenyatta University. This is what I went to school for. I majored in Interior Design, with minors in Painting and Weaving. I am a self-taught makeup artist. I did not attend Makeup school. Makeup came in as a passion and I learned the basics from YouTube. My background in painting played a major role in sharpening my skills since they literally have the same theory when it comes to color theory. I watched a lot of makeup tutorials from Makeup Artists such as Danessa Myricks, James Charles, Nikki Tutorials amongst others. I would learn the trends, then try them on my close friends and my sisters, like they say, practice makes perfect. With time I was able to purchase makeup products and just like that became a Pro MUA.
Any awards? Yes, I have won a few local awards but I believe the best ones are still on the Way. I won Project FX Africa Kenya 2018.

I also do personal classes for those who want to learn the basics of everyday makeup. Who are your major clients? I have a very diverse clientele. On weekends I do weddings but I would say the majority of my work would be TV Commercials, Photoshoots, and Music Videos. I work with a lot of Personalities Backstage. For instant I work for Coke Studio, Safaricom Twaweza Live, I was an assistant MUA for East Africa Got Talent, and Tinga Tinga Tales just to mention a few. Share your Project FX Africa experience. I have always had a dream of being part of a reality show like Glow up or Faceoff. Participating in the competition was so exciting to me because it was closer to my dreams.
Project FX Africa has a very special place in my heart. There were so many talented MUAs, the competition was very stiff. When I became the winner, it was the highlight of my year 2018. My father had always struggled to understand what exactly I did. But after finding out I had won the competition, I loved it, it was truly priceless. Winning the competition did show me that it was absolutely possible to achieve your dreams. I do believe that one day too soon I will be part of more international shows! Any advice for the upcoming makeup artists? I would like to encourage the upcoming MUAs to keep on keeping on believing in themselves. The things you are passionate about, are not random, keep tremendous interest, they are your calling. Forget about the fast lane. If you really want to fly, harness your power to your passion. Honor your calling, everybody has one. Trust your heart and success will come to you.

DEAR DIARY
Diary of an African MUA With Tejumade Nwafor EPISODE ONE
Makeup & headgear - @beautycookstudio
Dear Diary,
THE EVOLUTION OF THE GELE aka Nigerian headgear.
Oh, the joys of the days when perfect imperfections were celebrated across the world. The days when your curves and edges didn’t have to boast of a master's degree in mathematics. The days of our mothers and grandmothers; where it was actually the norm to DIY your GELE (headgear). The days of no muscle cramps while struggling to slay those pleats. Who cared back then if ur headgear was symmetrically pleated or not? ABSOLUTELY NO ONE! But I sadly bid those days adieu many many years ago as the world began to strive for perfection across the board in our ART and CRAFT. The bar had no limit and my insanely gifted colleagues with hand-eye coordination PhDs never really sent out a memo before releasing a new one. MAKEUP AFRICA | 74
Today's diary is about Nigeria, an African country on the Gulf of Guinea, which has many natural landmarks and wildlife reserves..hey i caught you there right, I am not here to give you history lessons. I am only here to talk about something straight from my makeup artist heart. This little page is available to me to reflect, assess, rant, moan, groan, unlearn and relearn as the case may be. So please walk with me as I do a little bit of everything. I’ll do my best to make it a short but worthy read.
We literally went to bed one night, woke up the next morning and wham, a new GELE trend had been born. Just when we finally got a handle on the one they released the previous month. So what do we do seeing as we can’t ask God to swap our brains with theirs? Well, there are so many solutions. For one, you can eat humble pie and go learn the new technique and hope and pray another isn’t born by the day after your class. In which case you go learn that too and all its cousins coming after it. All thanks to the innovative Mr Tolu of Onigele, @oni_gele. Or you go on your knees and ask the one who gives gifts to bless you with a genius new trend that you can put your stamp on like the super talented Omon of beauty cook studios, @beautycookstudio.
DEAR DIARY Or you whip out your biggest powder brush and sing Frank Sinatra’s I do it my way, just like I do because truth be told creativity is borderless and boundaryless. This why we should all try to learn a unique way of doing things from time to time and if having tried that you find it’s still not working, then, by all means, have the masters come to take care of that bit of
things especially if there are big bucks at stake along with your professional reputation. So here are Cheers to the new trends yet unborn, double cheers to the innovators and triple cheers to the lot of us who have to keep up par time. God bless all your hustles. Till next edition, Signed Simply TJ because I need to go massage these GELE induced cramps.

TIPS
Wearing lipstick can be a bold statement, and wearing orange lipstick is even bolder. Stop limiting yourself to the typical nude, pink, and red shades. Absolutely anyone can pull off orange lipstick – it’s just a matter of choosing the right shade for your skin tone and applying it perfectly. The orange lip colour is an all seasons type of colour and while the shade might be seasonless, pulling off an orange lippie isn’t quite as simple as swiping on a rose-y pink without thinking twice. Trust me there is a shade of orange for you. IDENTIFY YOUR TRUE SHADE Choose an orange-red shade if you have very fair skin. Go with a peachy coral shade if you have light skin. Wear vibrant shades if you have a medium/olive skin tone. Choose true orange or blood orange if you have a dark skin tone. If you have really, really dark skin, consider yourself blessed. Dark skin and orange lipstick are a match made in heaven. You can rock any shade you want – from peachy orange to the really electric orange. Pick a matte lip product for a bold look. Go for an orange gloss for a more subtle look. Try not to overdo the rest of your makeup. The only color that goes well with orange lipstick is black. Use the darkest shade of black mascara. If it’s nighttime and you’re going somewhere special, you can do a cat eye with a kohl pencil or/and eyeliner. The combination of orange lipstick and cat eyes will make you look very exotic. It’s a really cool look that almost no one uses.

THERAPY
Lemons: for your beauty therapy.
Life has definitely taught us to turn every lemon thrown our way into lemonades but hey! just before you do that, save some for your beauty therapy. Lemons have an amazing range of beauty benefits and here are some great uses for the yellow fruit:
Clarifying moisturiser Mix a few drops of coconut water with a few drops of lemon juice. The coconut will hydrate your skin, and lemon will clear and brighten it.
Blackhead remover It may sound too good to be true, but because lemons are antibacterial, they can help treat acne. Just slice a lemon, and squeeze the juice on your face. Your blackheads will start to fade before you know it.
Cleanser
Homemade Lemon Face Masks. 1. Squeeze out the juice from a lemon, and apply it all over your face with the help of a cotton ball. Wash off after an hour.
Mix a couple of drops of lemon and tea tree essential oil in about 6 ounces of distilled water.Good as a toner or for use with cotton pads as a cleansing wipe for problematic Elbow and knee bleacher: 2. Add three skin. teaspoons of lemon juice "If your elbows and knees appear Teeth Whitener with one dark, simply rub them with half of a teaspoon of lemon," says Patrice Coleman, owner tomato juice of DaBlot Beauty. "It's like magic!" Mix baking soda and lemon juice, and a pinch of turmeric.
and apply it to your teeth with a clean Q-tip. Then, use your toothbrush to scrub your teeth and rinse. It's way cheaper than going to your dentist's office.
Sore treatment Add a few drops of the lemon essential oil sores to heal faster.
Skin brightener Lemons are rich in vitamin C and citric acid, so they can help brighten and lighten your skin when used over time. Vitamin C is a great antioxidant for neutralizing free radicals and boosting collagen production. Remember to wear SPF when using lemon juice on your skin, though, since the citrus fruit can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays.
Shine Eliminator Shine eliminator: Lemon is great for reducing excess oil.

Put a little lemon juice on your lips before bedtime, and wash it off in the morning to help remove dead skin cells and dried skin. If you already have severely chapped lips that have any cuts, do not try this," says Gary Goldfaden, M.D., a dermatologist.
Nail Strengthener Have you been getting too many gel manicures? Make a mixture of your favorite cooking oil (try olive oil) with lemon juice, and soak your nails. This is a good practice if your nails are dry and brittle, but it's also a great way to help fix nails that have yellowed.
Hair lightener Score dye-free DIY highlights with lemon juice. Apply it before you expose your hair to sunlight to score a sun-kissed color. The lemon juice can also help treat a dry scalp and dandruff, so apply it liberally.
Apply this paste and leave it on for an hour before washing off. 3. Mix one teaspoon of lemon juice and honey with one tablespoon of milk powder, and apply this mixture to your face. Let it dry for 15 minutes before rinsing off with cold water. Apply this mask every day to unveil glowing skin. 4. You can make a face mask for naturally glowing and healthy skin by mixing together lemon juice, milk and turmeric. Apply this to the face and let it dry out. Wash off with warm water.
