Hello IBC Members and Family; Welcome to this momentous occasion of the First ever IBC Area 6 Convention. It is with great pride that our friends in Area 6 have put together this spectacular event. There is a lot that goes on in the planning and execution of a Convention and this particular Convention is a very important first for the International Betta Congress. We are all here for the love of a particular fish that has captured our hearts and our imagination. What has happened over the last forty years that I have been a part of this hobby still amazes me. The colors that have been dreamed up and the changes in body form are unrivaled anywhere in the fish and aquarium hobby. Also to add to this the fact that we now have three areas that are now having Area Conventions and will soon have a forth is a fact I find astonishing! I know how hard the people who put this Convention worked to make their dream become a reality. It is only fitting that we as the Betta Hobby have a Convention in the birth place of the “Fighting Fish that we all love so much. Thank you so much Thailand Betta Club for hosting such a prestigious event, and to Sarawut Korsoongsak along with Colonel Jesda Attavichitchanyarak for your hard work and dedication to actually bring this dream into reality! This event is only going to grow through the years and build upon the foundations you all have laid today. Although it pains me that I am not able to attend this spectacular event I know that in my heart that you will have the first and best Convention Experience you will ever have. Although there will be some rivalries between competitors it is the that spirit that brings us together as a family and promotes the comradery we have as lovers of this fish the Betta. Thank you all so much for attending and promoting the Betta Hobby. We appreciate the hard work that everyone has put into this event, the workers, those that breed and show these glorious, and everyone in attendance. From the bottom of my heart thank you all so very much! 2

Sarawut Korsoongsak Thailand Betta Club President IBC Area 6 Convention Chair
I
am delighted to welcome all IBC members to the first ever Area 6 Convention hosted by Thailand Betta Club. With the help of all chapters, we are finally able to host this convention. And where else to host it but in Thailand, the land of Bettas. This Convention is not only about Bettas, but it’s also a chance to meet both old and new hobbyists who share the same love for this magnificent species of fish. Area 6, which is situated in South East Asia has been the central of betta trade and hobbys, transacting at least a million fishes every year. Back in 2005, there were only a handful of IBC Registered Chapters in Area 6, this number have grown tremendously, now boasting over 20 active chapters. To top it off, the Betta hobby has grown to a point that theres a show being hosted every other week. Not only have we expanded in Area 6, our pioneers have been going around spreading the word of IBC and assisting these new hobbyist be the first to form an IBC Chapter in their country to hosting their first internationally sanctioned show. I believe, with this convention, the bonds between countries and clubs will tighten. And that I hope everyone will enjoy this convention to the fullest. After all, Betta is a Hobby to most of us, and it’s about fun and friendship. Lastly, I do wish with the success of this convention, more will follow. Thank you 3

The early history
of IBC in Area 6 by Dr.Li Chieh Hsu

The early history of the IBC in Area 6 roughly parallels the development of the betta hobby in Singapore. Just about the turn of the millennium, a beautiful new variant of domestic betta turned up at our local fish shops – the crowntail betta. This novel tail form mesmerized the local fish hobbyists and started many of us, myself included, to get into the betta hobby. It was the early days of internet chats, and the precursor of today’s clubs were formed on listservs – essentially email chats. A few of us realized these online chats were not enough and we formed the Betta Club (Singapore) as a regis-
tered social club with the Registry of Societies in Singapore. Peter Choo was our first President and with his leadership BCS grew into a thriving club with meet-ups, open houses, and most importantly, competitions. At around the same time in Europe and the US, a revolutionary development in domestic bettas was also occurring – Rajiv Massilimov (sp) from Switzerland, and others in the US were developing the precursors of the modern Halfmoon betta. This development did not escape the notice of our local hobbyists and we were soon clamouring to get our
hands on the newest, best and fullest tailed bettas; to the extent of importing fish from the US and paying handsome sums for good quality super deltas (True halfmoons were still rare in spawns, and good fish changed hands at up to SGD$2,000 for a decent specimen!). So now we’re an IBC chapter....what’s next? IBC standard shows of course! Just one problem..... we did not have any IBC certified judges to judge our shows! Again, we leveraged on Aquarama’s reputation to effect this change. With the help of Aquarama, and a small stipend from BCS, we invited 2 certified judges to judge the first sanctioned IBC International Show in Area 6. At the same time, we worked with the IBC Executive Board to have a judging course complete with all 3 seminars, an apprenticeship at Aquarama, visual and written tests – all done in the few days before and during

Aquarama 2005. This was a special crash course, and we were very fortunate to have as our trainers Ernie Perez and Dan Young – Ernie was the chair of judges certification and Dan was a Grand Champion, and both excellent judges. It was a very intensive 2 day residential course held at a nice holiday bungalow at Changi beach, with educational farm tours to the betta farm of the day Straits Aquarium, apprenticeship at the Aquarama 2005 show, and ending with visual and written tests 8
on site. We invited aspiring judges from our neighboring countries and by the end of the course, we had IBC certified judges from Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia! If there is one thing that I can be proud of with respect to the IBC in Area 6, this would be it – organising and driving through the first Judges’ Certification course in Area 6!

Subsequent to Aquarama 2005 and the qualification of Area 6’s first certified judges, the influence of the IBC slowly began to grow – sanctioned shows became known as the shows to enter for unbiased judging, and the number of IBC chapters grew to 5 within a year. Slowly and steadily, the number of chapters grew, even through the slow down in the fish hobby around 2010. But through the efforts of the die-hard betta hobbyists, and a huge infusion of “new blood”, the beta scene began to flourish again. By 2015, the number of chapters jumped to 11, and sky rocketed to 18 at last count! 10
During this period we started to get more involved in the main IBC activities – initially just through discussing and interaction with the IBC Executive and Judging Boards, and later through elected representation on these boards themselves. Through engagement with the main committees in the early days, we were able to get special dispensation to hold sanctioned shows that allowed non selfbred fish, and with combined classes. This was to cater to
Dennis Tan receiving the IBC judge certificate, Aquarama 2005
the different profile of the exhibitors in Asia, and to maximize show entries and participation to boost the popularity of show bettas. New varieties and classes also first made their appearance in Area 6 – we provided input into the crowntail standards, and black orchid CT classes. Eventually, we grew big and busy enough to justify representation in the Executive and Judging boards of the IBC. Sadly, we also “lost” some friends during this time. Pioneer chapter Betta Australis and the other clubs down under were cleaved off into Area 7. And whilst Hiroki Ishida is rightfully from Area 3, we fondly consider him as one of our own as he certified here with many of us. He now leads the Japan Betta Fellows in Japan and is starting up the show scene in Area 3. When talking about Area 6 chapters, the following deserve special mention: Asian Betta Alliance (ABA) made their appearance at Aquarama 2007 and had their first certified judges – Eric Tiu, Gary Ching and Emmerson Sy. They have been staunch supporters of the IBC and instrumental in its growth in the Philippines especially recently. I feel they are currently the most dynamic betta club anywhere in the world!.
In Indonesia, InBS was the pioneer club there and under the leadership of Joty Atmadjaja grew steadily – translating the IBC show standards into Indonesian and holding judging seminars in Indonesian. Together with Hermanus Herianto’s Betta Club Indonesia, they spread the IBC word across the vast Indonesian archipelago. Similarly, the Thailand Betta Club promoted the IBC in arguably the most difficult country to preach the IBC standards – the home of the wild and domesticated bettas. But push on they did under the leadership of Khun Jesda Attavichit, and now Khun Sarawut (Hui), holding sanctioned shows, translating the standards into Thai and ultimately becoming the host of Area 6’s very own and 1st Convention! This year we are holding our own and very first Area 6 Convention. Hosted by the Thailand Betta Club in the native home of Betta Splendens, it promise to be the start of bigger and better things in the world of show bettas. I’m certainly looking forward to an exciting convention and the promise of the future of a vibrant betta community in Area 6 – here’s to Fish, Friends and Fun!
