O’BRIEN
Dublin-born George Bernard Shaw was a pamphleteer, theatre and music critic and public lecturer, but above all a prolific playwright throughout his ninety-six years. A lifelong socialist, he strove for equality of the sexes and the eradication of poverty, with words as his weapons. Shaw’s romantic comedies were huge hits and are still performed worldwide. His best-loved play, Pygmalion (1914), a hilarious but devastating critique of the English class system, won an Oscar for Shaw’s screenplay in 1938 and later became the even more popular musical, My Fair Lady. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925. A rich selection from Shaw’s plays, essays and talks, displaying the full breadth of his talent, chosen and introduced by Anthony Roche.
