A Note from the Publisher Forty years ago, in November 1974, I founded O’Brien Press with my father Tom O’Brien. Tom was a poet, radical socialist and co-founder of Dublin’s New Theatre Group in the late 1930s. Their literary magazine was ‘Surge’, so it is fitting that 2014, also the centenary of Tom’s birth, sees us publish Surge: New Writing from Ireland, introduced by Frank McGuinness and featuring new short fiction from the five major Creative Writing Masters classes in Irish universities. Add to that wonderful debut novels in our Brandon Fiction imprint, Anyush by Martine Madden and White Feathers by Susan Lanigan, joining new crime fiction from Sheila Bugler and Sam Millar. And let’s not forget the latest instalments in our ground-breaking 16 Lives series, and eagerly awaited new books from acclaimed writers Alice Taylor, Des Ekin, Michael Foley and Colin Murphy. I think Tom would have been proud of how O’Brien Press continues to innovate to maintain its reputation as Ireland’s leading independent publisher.

The Wit of Oscar Wilde Sean McCann Oscar Wilde is probably the most quoted and quotable man in history. He boasted that he could talk spontaneously on any subject – a claim proved by the wicked, witty and everrelevant examples contained in this book.

Irish Wit Sean McCann Distils the essence of Irish wit – on love, religion, the ‘hard stuff’, the English, with a generous mix from Behan, Yeats, Swift, Moore, O’Casey, but above all from ‘yer man’, the leading authority on everything that grows, breeds, thinks or computes in the land.
