A Note from the Publisher Greetings to all our friends worldwide. What a year for O’Brien Press! A major highlight was publishing the Dublin Illustrated Edition of James Joyce’s Ulysses in partnership with Bob Joyce and the James Joyce Centre, to coincide with the Global Bloomsday Gathering. We also launched our Brandon Fiction imprint, led by playwright Frank McGuinness’ debut novel, Arimathea, and Mary Morrissy’s The Rising of Bella Casey, and published the first women’s crime title Hunting Shadows from new talent Sheila Bugler. We grew our graphic novel series with multi-talented Alfonso Zapico’s James Joyce, Portrait of a Dubliner, breakthrough artist Will Sliney’s Celtic Warrior, and titles on Jim Larkin and the 1913 Lockout. And take your pick of new biography, history, business, sport, music, cookery and photography – despite the challenges, we are firing on all cylinders and producing an impressive range of fantastic books.

‘A hymn to the simple pleasures of growing up in small-town Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s. The tenor is upbeat and positive and it is a joy to read, chronicling as it does the intricate web of loyalties to family and parish that bound a community together. Populated by lively characters who would not be out of place in a Dickens novel. In writing it, Joe O’Toole has done us all a service.’ Eugene McEldowney - The Irish Times

HUMOUR Gift of the Gab The Irish Conversation Guide Tadhg Hayes Conversation in Ireland is a sport, an entertainment and the essential route to the Irish heart. But it’s full of twists and turns. In order to negotiate it you will need help! This book is a user’s manual, not just another phrase book. You’ll be talking like a native in no time!
Irish Wit Sean McCann In this lively, quotable book, Sean McCann has succeeded in distilling the essence of Irish wit – on love, religion, the ‘hard stuff’, the English, with a generous mix from Behan, Yeats, Swift, Moore, O’Casey, but above all from ‘yer man’, the leading authority on everything that grows, breeds, thinks or computes in the land.
The Wit of Oscar Wilde Sean McCann Oscar Wilde is probably the most quoted and quotable man in history. He boasted that he could talk spontaneously on any subject – a claim proved by the wicked, witty and everrelevant examples contained in this book.
Dublin Wit Paul Ryan Wisdom, wickedness, banter and bitching from the heart of Dublin, with overheard conversations and comments from Moore Street market.
The Wee Book of Irish Wit and Malarkey Sean McCann and Paul Ryan Irish wit is an art form that can be sage, silly, insulting, or profound, but it’s always entertaining. This is a pint-sized draught of potent mirth and malarkey from Wilde, Swift, Behan, and many other wags, including ‘yer man’ on everything from love and marriage to death and dying and everything in between.
Holy Smoke! True Papal Stories that will Amaze and Amuse Bob Curran Is the Pope Catholic? Well, not necessarily. Neither is he always a he, or even always alive. A unique tour of the (un)Holy See, with some of history’s most unlikely popes.
I Will in me Politics The Maurice Hickey Diaries Pat Shortt It’s rare that a political diary of such significance comes along. Councillor Maurice Hickey is a leader in his community, the man who gets things done.
Cures, Hoors and Floating Voters Pat Shortt Volume II of the exclusive behind-the-scenes diaries of Maurice Hickey, one of Ireland’s hardest-working politicians. An informative and insightful account of his political exploits.
