Little Love Lessons

Introduction

Hello, hello! It is lovely to have you here. My name is Tarsila, and I’m an illustrator, author and all-round creative. I am originally from Brazil, though most of my adventures in adulthood have happened in Ireland: a special place where I began making books and where my son, Otto, was born. Becoming a mother was a life-long desire for me, but I did not realise that some of its challenges would be extremely difficult, and occasionally, life would be too much to handle. And this is how Little Love Lessons came about. It sprouted from daily musings, reflections and observing my journey as I grew into a parent, and I will share more about this later in the book. For now, I would like to invite you to enjoy these little nuggets of love, either on your own or with a child in your life. These lessons helped me overcome and better understand some of the bumps in the road to becoming a parent, and I hope they can also give you moments of connection, discovery, calm, fun, inspiration, self-expression, understanding … and, of course, love!

LITTLE LOVE LESSONS 3

All You Need Is Hug

In many parts of the world, babies and children are carried on their parents’ backs throughout the day. Wouldn’t that make you feel lovely, cosy and safe? The touch of a loved one is so precious. In our house, when we feel hurt, sad or worried, sometimes a hug or a gentle kiss is all it takes to make things better. Sharing hugs, holding hands or creating a special handshake are great ways to connect. Take time for a snuggle and a chat, or sometimes just sitting close together will feel right. When things are too much, maybe all you need is hug!

Find Joy in Simple Things

Children have a wonderful superpower: they find magic and fun everywhere! Changing into pyjamas can turn into a dinosaur chase, including roars and tickles. A bus journey zips by when you are spotting shapes in the clouds or cars with unexpected colours. How many animals can you find when you go to the park? A queue is not boring if you are balancing on one foot or singing a made-up song. Brushing your teeth is much more fun if you pretend to clean a whale’s mouth. With a little imagination, we can find joy in simple things.
