A Note from the Managing Director
It’s not every year that we get two books picked out for international awards: Ruth Frances Long was selected by the European Science Fiction Society as best author for A Crack in Everything (followed this year by A Hollow In The Hills) and Kim Hood’s fantastic debut Finding a Voice was shortlisted for the inaugural YA Book Prize. Congratulations to both authors, and hopefully this year’s crop will do just as well! Picture book are getting us excited this year: Nicola Colton’s (she created the lovely new covers for Judi Curtin’s Alice & Megan series) A Dublin Fairytale, the first Irish-published edition of Gulliver with stunning illustrations by Lauren O’Neill and Chris Judge & Mark Wickham latest collaboration, Brian and the Giant. For older readers, two gripping debuts (A Cage of Roots and The Butterfly Shell) join new books by established members of the O’Brien Press writing family: Alan Nolan, Erika McGann, Nicola Pierce, Gerard Siggins, Judi Curtin, Brian Gallagher and Celine Kiernan. There’s something for everyone here: happy reading! Her previous book The Treachery of Beautiful Things (Dial Books, 2012) received excellent reviews. ‘fantasy lovers will adore the twists and turns … it’s wonderful to see Irish mythology in the hands of someone who knows what they’re talking about and resists presenting the reader with a twee view of the country’ Inis magazine on A Crack in Everything ‘an excellent fantasy, with strange but memorable characters set in believable settings. The storyline all through is tense and exciting with a somewhat surprise ending’ Irish Examiner on A Crack in Everything Maureen White is a playwright, teacher at the Gaiety School of Acting and dramaturg for Rough Magic Theatre Company.
