A Note from the Publisher What a year 2016 has been for Ireland! The centenary of the Easter Rising has done much to remind us of our rich history, and to bolster national pride. And with Ireland’s economy improving, our confidence is up too. This has been a great year for O’Brien, and our team has been working harder than ever to produce a wide range of fine books. As well as the usual eclectic mix of fiction, history, biography, graphic novel and humour titles, we are delighted to commemorate Cathal Brugha Street’s 75th anniversary with All in the Food, featuring recipes from the country’s top chefs. We have also teamed up with renowned photographic agency Sportsfile on Great Moments in Gaelic Football, and with acclaimed Irish Times photographer Eric Luke on Looking Back, a celebration of Irish life over the last forty years. Weeshie Fogarty brings his irrepressible personality to The Heart and Soul of Kerry Football, and we have the thoughtful Tea and Talk from everyone’s favourite, Alice Taylor. Last but certainly not least, we are very excited about the beautiful Dublin: The Story of a City with unique reconstruction drawings by Stephen Conlin and text by Peter Harbison. Our catalogue is bursting at the seams – dive in and have a look!

New books from The O’Brien Press

Dublin The Story of a City Stephen Conlin & Peter Harbison Dublin has taken many forms over the last millennium: first a Scandinavian settlement, linked by kinship to Norway; then a medieval town that formed part of a Norman sphere of influence across Western Europe. By the eighteenth century, it was a ‘polite’ city of the British Empire, before gaining independence and developing into a bustling, modern European capital. Merging archaeology with art, Stephen Conlin’s beautifully crafted views recreate Dublin’s most famous areas and buildings at key times in their development, such as Wood Quay in 1254, Parliament House circa 1760, O’Connell Street in 1945, and the Grand Canal Basin today. This wonderful imagery is complemented and enhanced by the vivid text of Peter Harbison, which moves through time to provide an entertaining history of Dublin, its people and its landmarks.

Bobby Sands Freedom Fighter Gerry Hunt Bobby Sands was a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army who died on hunger strike while imprisoned at HM Prison Maze. He was the leader of the 1981 hunger strike in which Irish republican prisoners protested against the removal of Special Category Status. During his strike he was elected to the British Parliament as an anti H-Block candidate. His death was followed by a new surge of Provisional IRA recruitment and activity. A Short History of Ireland Breandán Ó hEithir A short, accessible and entertaining history from one of Ireland’s best-loved writers, now updated to bring our country’s story right up to date. It deals with prehistory, the Celts, Christianity, the Vikings and the Normans. The various conquests and rebellions are covered, including Cromwell, Wolfe Tone and the 1916 Rising. Linking past to present, it brings history up to date, providing an interesting account of both North and South through the 20th century, clarifying the development and intricacies of the Northern ‘troubles’ and the many attempts to resolve them. 16Lives The final titles in this ambitious biographical series: see them all on page A23. Sixteen men were executed for their roles in the Easter Rising 1916: here their lives and sacrifices are explored in full. Patrick Pearse Ruán O’Donnell Patrick Pearse was born in Dublin and spent many summers in Rosmuc in Galway learning Irish. He established a school for boys, St. Enda’s, where children could learn about Irish culture and language. The public face of the 1916 Rising, Pearse was in charge of the General Post Office (GPO). When the British army overpowered the Irish rebels, it was Pearse who ordered their general surrender to save further loss of life. He was tried and executed by firing squad in Kilmainham Jail on 3 May 1916.

Thomas Kent Meda Ryan Born in 1865 near Fermoy in County Cork, Thomas Kent became involved in the Land League in the 1880s and was jailed for his part in a boycott. At Easter 1916 Thomas and his brothers mobilised in County Cork, waiting for further orders. During a gunfight at their home – Cork’s only fighting – a policeman and Thomas’s brother Richard were killed. Convicted of ‘taking part in an armed rebellion’, Thomas was sentenced to death. He was executed in Cork Gaol on 9 May 1916. Meda Ryan’s biography shines light on a man who was ‘Ireland’s forgotten patriot’ until a State funeral in September 2015.

Tea and Talk Alice Taylor Relax with Alice, sit and chat over a cup of tea, as she invites you into her life. See an old press overflowing with the linen collection of two generations, the oil lamps and clocks inherited and collected over many years, and the books of people who once lived here. Alice tells you of the sad loss of her beautiful dogs Kate and Lolly, friends of the heart, and takes you around her village to meet her neighbours, join a meitheal to plant trees, and visit the fairy doors in the nearby wood. But Alice’s home and community are not a perfect place: hear about the split in the local GAA club, blocked off rights of way, the donations of the local canine population on the footpaths! Visit a restored famine graveyard and hear about the landlords who once owned this village and the landmarks they left on the landscape and the people. The Wee Book of Irish Wit and Malarkey Sean McCann & Paul Ryan Irish wit is an art form that can be sage, silly, insulting, or profound, but it’s always entertaining. This is a pint-sized draught of potent mirth and malarkey from Wilde, Swift, Behan, and many other wags, including ‘yer man’ on everything from love and marriage to death and dying and everything in between.

Gift of the Gab The Irish Conversation Guide Tadhg Hayes Conversation in Ireland is a sport, an entertainment and the essential route to the Irish heart. But it’s full of twists and turns. In order to negotiate it you will need help! With the help of this book you’ll be talking like a native in no time!

The Wit of Oscar Wilde Sean McCann Oscar Wilde is probably the most quoted and quotable man in history. He boasted that he could talk spontaneously on any subject – a claim proved by the wicked, witty and ever-relevant examples contained in this book.

Irish Wit Sean McCann Distils the essence of Irish wit – on love, religion, the ‘hard stuff’, the English, with a generous mix from Behan, Yeats, Swift, Moore, O’Casey, but above all from ‘yer man’, the leading authority on everything that grows, breeds, thinks or computes in the land.

Dublin Wit Paul Ryan Wisdom, wickedness, banter and bitching from the heart of Dublin, with overheard conversations and comments from Moore Street market.

The Fridge in a Denim Jacket! Zig & Zag Ireland’s favourite aliens in a special anniversary edition of their first ever book. Jokes, stories and general madness for the child in all of us!
