A Note from the Publisher Greetings to our friends across the globe and to readers everywhere. We present with pride (and the usual publisher’s trepidation) a diverse list for this year. From Frank McGuinness’ dazzlingly original novel, The Woodcutter and his Family, and major talent Billy O’Callaghan’s highly acclaimed debut novel, The Dead House, both in our Brandon literary imprint, to Best-Loved Joyce, the perfect introduction to one of our most important writers. If it’s a feast for the eyes you’re after, look no further than our new photographic books celebrating the best that Ireland has to offer: Kerry, Dublin Bay, Ireland’s Ancient East and Ireland’s Beautiful North. Or why not spend some time with country music legends Philomena Begley and Daniel O’Donnell through their new autobiographies, or master choreographer Marie Duffy in Lady of the Dance. Alice Taylor reminds us all of what she loves about that festive time of year in Home for Christmas, and sport fans will love Great Moments in Hurling and Festival Fever: The Irish at Cheltenham. Take a few minutes to browse through our full catalogue – you won’t be disappointed.

Philomena Begley My Life, My Music, My Memories Philomena Begley with Emma Heatherington After joining the Old Cross Céili Band at barely twenty years of age, Philomena became a household name with her 1975 breakout single, ‘Blanket on the Ground’. By 1978, she was touring the US, marching in the New York City St Patrick’s Day Parade, recording at Dolly Parton’s and Porter Wagoner’s Fireside Studios in Nashville and performing at the Grand Ole Opry. She has recorded and performed with all the top stars. Follow Philomena from her happy beginnings as a bread-man’s daughter in Pomeroy through the devastating loss of her brother Patsy, right up to her fiftieth anniversary in show business in 2012 in her ‘gold and silver days’.

Living the Dream Daniel O’Donnell with Eddie Rowley In Ireland, Daniel O’Donnell is more than just a singing star: he has reached the status of ‘national treasure’. It has been a long journey for the boy from Kincasslagh, County Donegal, and in Living the Dream he tells his story with his customary sense of humour and down-to-earth charm. Daniel reflects on the emotions that accompanied his wife Majella’s battle with cancer; the death of his beloved mother, Julia; his part in the BBC’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ TV show; and his ‘B&B Road Trip’ adventures with Majella. And he delves into the relentless touring and recording that took him to the brink of burnout and forced him to reassess his priorities. Daniel O’Donnell is an international phenomenon – ‘a real star’. His fans will love this latest instalment of his extraordinary life story. 272 pages/photographs €19.99 hb/ISBN 978-1-84717-967-8 eBook ISBN 978-1-84717-986-9 Rights available W

The Cradle of Civilisation 23

At all times of the year, plants bring colour to the glens – orchids, bright yellow gorse, bluebells, butterwort, primroses, and thistles. Grouse, harriers, falcons, kingfishers, buzzards, and larks are just some of the birds that can be seen.

HIGH KINGS AND HEROES The Hill of Tara is a moderate elevation near the town of Navan, County Meath overlooking the Boyne and Blackwater Valleys below. Its name derives from the Irish Teamhair, Place of great prospect or Place with a wide view. Today it isn’t much more than a grassy pasture with bumps and hollows, but it is one of the oldest and most important historic sites in Ireland. The Hill of Tara is best known as the coronation place of the early Irish kings and some 142 kings are said to have started their reign here. The story of Tara, however, starts well before it became a coronation site. The oldest structure on the Hill of Tara is the Mound of Hostages (Duma na nGiall), a passage tomb that dates back to around 2500 BC and which contained the cremated remains of at least 200 individuals and the skeleton of a fourteen-year-old boy decorated with a necklace with beads of bronze, amber, jet and faience. Later the tomb was used by the Celtic kings, like Niall of the Nine

hostages, to hold adversaries; he is said to have held hostages from every province in Ireland and Britain to ensure their submission to his rule. Close to the Mound of Hostages are the King’s Seat (Forradh) with the Stone of Destiny (Lia Fáil) and Cormac’s House (Teach Chormaic). The King’s Seat was most likely the inauguration site for the kings of old. The current mound dates from the early centuries AD, was built on top of older mounds and could have featured a circular house. In the legends the site is also the burial place of the Spanish princess, Tea. Her wish was to be buried under the fairest hill in Ireland and her husband chose Tara. The Stone of Destiny was moved to its current location in 1798 after the Battle of Tara to mark the graves of some four hundred United Irishmen who fell during the fight. Originally it stood just north of the Mound of Hostages where it was placed by the Tuatha DeDannann tribe (the people of the goddess Danu) as one of their sacred objects. This book covers the whole Kingdom, including North Kerry, the Dingle Peninsula, the Blasket Islands, the Ring of Kerry, Killarney and the Skellig Islands. It is five kilometres of spectacular, bleached and unspoilt shoreline, immortalised in the epic film Ryan’s Daughter. Right: Sammy’s Bar, Restaurant, and Café, Inch Beach.

of water on the west coast of Ireland. Visitors from near and far are compelled to stop, look and marvel at this huge vista with its everchanging light. In fact, if you are in no hurry (and nothing should be hurried in Kerry), this is a very good place to take a break, sit back, watch and wait – especially in ‘mixed’ and unsettled weather. Watch the transformation before you, minute by minute, with showers and clouds rolling in, great shafts of sunlight and huge, often double, rainbows. Here, there will often be a downpour blackout followed rapidly by bright sunshine. Right: Dingle dawn.

Top left: Catching mackerel at Dillon Park, Dalkey. Top middle and right: Great blackbacked gulls on Dalkey Island, a bird watcher’s paradise. Care is needed as the ground is riddled with rabbit holes and there is a colony of wild goats. During the summer months a regular ferry runs to the Island. Dalkey Scubadivers go diving and snorkelling off the island and further afield.

Top: Since 1180 the St Lawrence family have been the Lords of Howth and resided at Howth Castle. Popular legend has it that, in 1576, the pirate Grace O’Malley (Granuaile) attempted to pay a courtesy visit to the 8th Baron Howth. However, she was informed that the family was at dinner and the castle gates were closed against her. In retaliation, she abducted the grandson and heir. He was released when a promise was given to keep the gates open to unexpected visitors, and to set an extra place at every meal. This agreement is still honoured today.

Bottom: St Begnet’s Church on Dalkey Island is thought to have originated as a timber structure in the 9th or 10th century, and is believed by some to offer miracle cures from its nearby Holy Well. There are unusual carved stone crosses nearby, and the Martello tower on the island is one of the best preserved examples of its kind. 128 | DUBLIN BAY

The Aran Islands At the Edge of the World Lying in the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of Galway Bay, the Aran Islands are truly a place apart. On Inishmore, Inishmaan and Inisheer, all of Irish history, its language, culture and traditions, have been preserved; these wild, enchanting islands seem to have survived the modern world. With striking photographs, vivid text, poems and extracts, The Aran Islands introduces the reader to life in this special place over the past 150 years.

with the passage of time, many clusters have again been ‘stretched’ as new houses are built along the road. Inishmaan, viewed from the sea,

presents a continuous line of houses rather than distinct villages. The number of villages on Inishmore varies from ten to fourteen, depending

on whether one regards the smaller clusters as being independent of, or

merged with, the larger ones. On Aran, settlement has tended to move downslope. New houses are generally taller than the old ones, and their builders seek a lower, more sheltered site. The houses in the village of

Sruthán on Inishmore were all sited above the road in pre-Famine days, but the whole village is now situated below the road.

The Truth About Leprechauns Bob Curran Every country has its own myths about fairies and ‘wee folk’, but the Irish leprechaun is the undisputed king. To some, he is an impish figure full of harmless mischief, forever guarding his elusive crock of gold. To others, he is an evil gnome, bent on disrupting the lives of mortals with his black magic and malevolent acts. Historian and folklorist Bob Curran looks at the origins of this hero of Irish lore – fallen angel, diminished god or son of fairies – and at his habits, occupations and characteristics. He explores the superstitions surrounding the leprechaun, and his enduring place in popular culture, turning the spotlight on the ‘real’ leprechaun – a mysterious, complex and contradictory creature.

The Woodcutter and his Family Frank McGuinness 1941. The World War intensifies in Europe. In Zurich, a famous writer breathes his last, imagining his life till now from his childhood in Dublin. The voices of his family circling him – wife, son, daughter – carry him to his end as he hears each separate chapter chronicling the power of their passion for their famous father, their love, their hate, their need, their sorrows and joys, their strangeness. And James Joyce has saved one last story to delight and defy them: The Woodcutter and his Family ... 224 pages €14.99 hb/ISBN 978-1-84717-907-4 eBook ISBN 978-1-84717-989-0 Rights available W

The Dead House ... the past holds constant sway ... Billy O’Callaghan Perched on a roadside incline, with the land spilling down to a glittering sea, sits a ruined cottage dating back to pre-Famine times. And it calls to artist Maggie Turner, who is running from her own demons. But this is an old house, with a long, grim history, a place that has known hard living and far too much death. In certain isolated corners of the world, the past holds constant sway, and some things are better left undisturbed. 224 pages €12.99 hb/ISBN 978-1-84717-887-9 eBook ISBN 978-1-84717-934-0 Rights available W Rights sold US/CAN

Maeve, the Warrior Queen

g

Celtic Way of Life Curriculum Development Unit Illus. Josip Lizatovic The story of how the Celts lived in ancient Ireland – their houses, food, weapons, modes of transport, social structures, beliefs and their pagan festivals and rituals.

Queen Maeve lies sleeping on Knocknarea, which translates as ‘Royal Hill’ in Irish.

96 pages/illustrations €6.99 pb/ISBN 987-0-86278-563-5 Rights available W

T

he mountain of Knocknarea rises proudly from

the surrounding plains on Sligo’s Cuil Irra peninsula. In Irish it’s called Cnoc na Rí, the Royal Hill. You don’t have to wonder why

for long – Queen Maeve’s Tomb, on the very pinnacle, is clearly

visible from miles away. It’s an ancient ritual site but, despite its historic status, it has never been excavated. Legend has it that to do so would be to awaken the wrath of a goddess queen whose anger

is not easily appeased. And it would not be a good idea to annoy Maeve. Never was. Touchy would be understating it. And so, her

peace undisturbed, Queen Maeve lies sleeping on Knocknarea, awaiting the day when Ireland has need of her once more.

The Wee Book of Irish Wit and Malarkey Sean McCann & Paul Ryan Irish wit is an art form that can be sage, silly, insulting or profound, but it’s always entertaining. This is a pint-sized draught of potent mirth and malarkey from Wilde, Swift, Behan and many other wags, including ‘yer man’ on subjects from love and marriage to death and dying and everything in between.

Gift of the Gab The Irish Conversation Guide Tadhg Hayes Conversation in Ireland is a sport, an entertainment and the essential route to the Irish heart. But it’s full of twists and turns. In order to negotiate it you will need help! With the help of this book you’ll be talking like a native in no time!

The Wit of Oscar Wilde Sean McCann Oscar Wilde is probably the most quoted and quotable man in history. He boasted that he could talk spontaneously on any subject – a claim proven by the wicked, witty and everrelevant examples contained in this book.

Irish Wit Sean McCann Distils the essence of Irish wit – on love, religion, the ‘hard stuff’, the English, with a generous mix from Behan, Yeats, Swift, Moore, O’Casey, but above all from ‘yer man’, the leading authority on everything that grows, breeds, thinks or computes in the land.

Country Days Alice Taylor takes readers along the byways of Ireland and into the heart of the country. In stories by turn comic and poignant, she explores the bonds of concern and kindness which hold people together.
