AMBIENTE 2018 We took our annual pilgrimage to Ambiente, Frankfurt, this year to see what’s hot in the world of housewares and interiors. The sheer scale of the show can be a little daunting but here is our take on some of the highlights and trends that we saw this year.

SUSTAINABLE TIMBER There is a bubbly undercurrent of change at Ambiente this year. It’s not momentous but there is certainly something stirring and everything eco is bubbling to the surface. Many brands are revisiting bamboo as an alternative to less sustainable timbers in housewares, mixed with mass produced plastics it’s delivering the semiotic code and it appears to be solid sustainable as an option.

Vacuvita
Vacuvita, a Dutch start-up that grew out of Indiegogo - has delivered a real window into the future: dare we say it, a ‘Smart’ Kitchen solution for vacuum assisted food storage. Its counter top vacuum box triples the lifespan of fresh goods (even when compared to freezing). Paired with brilliantly simple app which advises and manages ingredient storage.

ECO INTELLIGENCE French newbie COOKUT is pushing eco and personal indulgence in their mashup of life’s luxuries (think Mojito muddler, or and avocado pestle) all delivered with a reduced waste packaging message, chip-board and stencil graphics exhibition stand and simple low-fi production techniques.

BRAND RE-DIRECTION Chef’n hinted at a shift away from kitchen tools towards aspirational countertop - and were showing a lovely citrus press and companion coffee system - tapping into the massive US cold brew coffee appetite and pairing with French press and drip filter/pour-over.

Water bottles have become the Ambiente must-have over the last five years - with every brand looking to leverage their own special twists‌ Without being cynical there are now so many A-B and C brands, along with OEM’s producing PET replacement that we are starting to wonder when someone will disrupt the market and do something meaningful with a plastic free solution?
