SMART KITCHEN
Salone Del Mobile, Milan 2018
Smart cooking is now a “must-do in kitchen appliances and the big brands are showcasing their take on it. Samsung set it’s connected fridge as a family hub, the outer touchscreen deals with the family communication, while a camera placed inside the fridge helps with meal planning, shopping list, and instant content visualization. Samsung also showcased a double access oven that allows to set different temperatures in one oven and cook two meals independently. All of their smart appliances can be controlled through their SmartThings app. Combining nutrition and technology, Grundig developed MicroGarden, an intelligent growing system for microgreens with automatic watering and air circulation.

DELICATE INTERACTIONS Creating a delightful experience makes a difference when using tech products, we’ve seen some great example of interfaces with a little twist. When the power button is switched on, Samsung’s latest induction hob imitates flames in a captivating and safe way. The size of the flames vary depending on the temperature that’s selected.

Grundig went for integrated interface : devices no longer have any buttons but instead are controlled via a projected interface on a marble surface. Sony’s Hidden Senses exhibition showed interactions with the right amount of magic: remote controls are replaced by beautiful interactive marble cubes, decorative objects become alive as you touch them and soft lights follow you where you need them. Playing with haptic feedbacks, carefully chosen sounds and delightful interactions, the result was poetic and convincing.

SHY TECH Technology beautifully blending in our everyday environment is a direction more and more brands are heading. Google’s exhibition was all about presenting their products in a way that makes technology invisible in the home environment. Both Sonos and Ikea decided to treat their new speaker like furniture to create a colour palette that fits any interior. A similar example was a lamp design by Coach that’s made in such a way the lightbulb is hidden behind fabric, and the lamp is completely invisible unless switched on.

The Salone Del Mobile is a major event to attend, and one of the best fair to see in Europe. It’s first of all a great way to get an idea of what’s on trend at the moment in terms of colour, materials and finishes in the world of interior design. But the exhibitions that surround the fair are probably the best thing to see if you’re looking for what’s coming next, whether it’s a promising brand’s debut, talks and conferences or surprising tech innovations.
