Township looking for more local control as region moves closer to new Official Plan
A longtime member of the Royal Canadian Legion's Elmira branch, Gord Moore will now serve the organization at the national level.

fter some 25 years of service with the Elmira Legion, Gordon Moore is now ready to represent the branch on a national level: he was recently selected to serve as Dominion first vice-president of The Royal Canadian Legion. His election to the Legion’s top executive council came at the 43rd Dominion Convention in Winnipeg. Moore joined the Canadian Army in 1969, serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, stationed in Fort Osborne, Winnipeg for three years. He has been a member of the Elmira Branch 469 since 1985. He served on the branch executive and all its committees, including a stint as the poppy committee chairman. He became branch president in 1989. By the time he finishes his term as vice-president and then president,

egion of Waterloo efforts to draft a new Official Plan still gives short shrift to the township, butting in on territory that belongs under local control, says Woolwich’s director of engineering and planning. For Dan Kennaley, the region’s latest revisions, now under review by the province, don’t address all of the township’s concerns. Planning staff have been commenting on the draft Regional Official Plan (ROP) throughout the lengthy process, winning some concessions. But more are needed, he said this week. “There are still some outstanding matters – we want the region to make changes.” Specifically, the township would like to see more local control over subdivision approvals, for instance. Likewise, municipalities should be able to adjust their own
