Things get hot BACK UNDER CONTROL Firefighters from St. Jacobs and Conestogo were called out July 16 to a fire on Lobsinger Line just east of Heidelberg. A witness saw the flames, estimated at 25-feet high. and reported it as a grass fire. It started in a large wood pile next to a barn, which was considered at risk during the several hours it took to extinguish the blaze.

Woolwich plans to investigate ways to boost local economy Steve Kannon

ave an opinion or two about what path Woolwich should follow on the road to strengthening the local economy? The township will be looking for your two cents’ worth later this year as it formulates an economic development strategic plan.

The goal is to create a roadmap to guide the township in the longer term as it looks to build a diverse economy, said chief administrative officer David Brenneman.

“You need a plan. Otherwise you’re flying by the seat of your pants, and that’s never good.”

Under the terms of a request for proposal issued earlier this month – quotes from consultants are expected by the end of July – the undertaking will review Woolwich’s current strengths and assets, then identify future opportunities, he explained.

That could include working on attracting technology companies or boosting tourism or broadening the industrial base. Or all of that and more.

“We’ll be looking at where the strengths are in the township, where are the opportunities?”

Whatever the outcome, Brenneman is sure the outlook is bright.

Boarding call

> Another jackpot for Centre Wellington Centre Wellington Township is $578,380 richer this week thanks to the latest installment of its share of revenues from slot machines at the Grand River Raceway. The payment represents five per cent of the revenues generated in the first quarter (April through June).

To date, the township has received more than $12.3 million in non-tax gaming revenue since the operation was forced to move from Woolwich Township.

Slots at Grand River Raceway opened on Dec. 4, 2003. Since that time, it has attracted more than 3.9 million visitors.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation issued more than $18.3 million in revenue last quarter to 23 host communities of slots at racetracks and charity casinos. To date, those communities have collected $706 million.

The tracks themselves receive 10 per cent of the gross slots revenue, with another 10 per cent going to the horseracing industry.

ail travel reached its heyday in the decades around the turn of the 20th century, when a railway link could make or break towns and industries. By the 1940s, rail was in decline as the automobile took precedence.

Now there’s an uptick in interest from a historical standpoint.

“You can see the interest just by the ridership on our train,” said Roy Broadbear, general manager of the Waterloo Central Railway and a fourth-generation railroader. “There’s quite a move afoot. People are finally taking an interest in preserving our railway history.”

The Waterloo Central Railway is operated by the Southern Ontario Locomotive Restoration Society. In addition to operating the train that runs between Waterloo and Elmira on market days, SOLRS acquires and restores locomotives and railway cars. Both of those

operations are getting a boost with the construction of a new train station and repair shop in St. Jacobs.

Construction of the new building started in June 2009 and is essentially complete, with just the last

interior finishing left to be done. The new shop will speed up the pace of restoration, allowing volunteers to work inside during the winter. The space includes a public washroom, lunchroom, equipment storage

and display area.

The 55-by-90-foot building has a 24-foot ceiling and the floor is reinforced to hold the weight of heavy locomotives. There are two sets of tracks running through the shop, meaning two locomotives can be worked on side by side.

This week, the No. 9 steam engine sat waiting for its 10year certification alongside the “pink lady,” a locomotive that was used as a switcher in a Niagara Falls rail yard. The pink lady was originally a reddish-orange colour, but the paint faded over years of sitting outside in a pile of rubble. When the owners sold the property it sat on, they had to clear out the locomotive and donated it to SOLRS. When refurbishing is complete it will be restored to its original colour, but until then, due to popular demand, the engine is staying pink.

Both Goetz and Jeremy Allen of Kitchener are enrolled in diploma programs that feature co-op education – Goetz in Mechanical Engineering Technology – Robotics and Automation, and Allen in Mechanical Engineering Technology – Design and Analysis.

Because both winners are co-operative education students, the company will offer them employment during their third program-related co-op education work term. The cash portion of the award will go to the students upon their registration in September.

A 23-yearold Waterloo man was charged with ‘over 80 mgs’ and ‘drive while disqualified.’ He is scheduled to appear in guelph court on Aug. 23 to answer to the charges.

The security video showed a Caucasian man in his early 30s, around six feet tall and heavyset, with short dark hair, wearing olive green docker pants and a green-and-white striped golf shirt bending in front of the display case. Nothing was missing from the case and the investigation is ongoing.

What do you do?

I work as a teacher in Hong Kong. I am back in Elmira for the summer months.

I teach Grade 8 at an international school. It is for students who want an English education but whose parents work and live in Hong Kong.

How did you get that job?

I was teaching on a reserve in Northern Ontario, when a coworker was offered the Hong Kong job but was not able to take it. She gave them my name, I interviewed and was on a plane in six weeks!

What do you like best about living there?

Everything is very convenient there. They have great shopping, and I am also very close to a beach and mountains so it is quite easy to live there.

What do you teach?

What is your favourite part

of coming home?

Seeing my family and friends. I also have missed the big open sky and green spaces- there isn’t much of that in Hong Kong. I miss things like grassy lawns and fresh local food.

What will be your next step?

I plan to come home every summer, but to keep teaching and traveling. If anyone knows of an international school that is hiring, let me know!

onstruction of Waterloo North Hydro’s new service centre is officially underway after a groundbreaking ceremony held on the site Wednesday morning.

The new facility is located on Country Squire Road in Woolwich Township, just north of the Waterloo boundary. Half of the 104,000-square-foot facility will house administration offices, while the other half will be used for storage and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Site preparation is already well underway; work on the foundations will start in two weeks, with the building scheduled to be completed by December 2011. The 100 employees of Waterloo North Hydro who work in the service centre should be moving in before the end of the year, said project manager Pedro Bevelander.

The new facility is more than twice the size of the existing 47,000-square-foot service centre. Waterloo North Hydro bought 35 acres of property, 7.5 acres of which will be used for a storage yard. In the future, the site might also have a

The new building will incorporate measures to make it environmentally friendly and energy efficient, including a geothermal heating and cooling system, operable windows and a 40,000-litre rainwater harvesting system.

The old house and farm buildings on the site have been demolished, but some of the materials were saved to be re-used. Concrete was crushed and will be used for structural fill, and the old barn beams, made of elm hardwood, will be reworked into boardroom tables and wood finishes inside the building.

Bevelander said the service centre will be built to a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver standard, and could potentially end up meeting LEED gold standards.

“We’re only three points away from gold,” he said.

WNH plans a controlled transition to the new building once it's complete. At that point, it will look at selling the current site at 300 Northfield Dr. E. Waterloo North Hydro delivers electricity to 140,000 residents in the city of Waterloo and Woolwich and Wellesley townships.

t has been just more than six months since a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti, and a number of Woolwich Township residents have spent that time planning, organizing and fundraising for projects that will help the country rebuild.

Today (Saturday), a group of volunteer builders from Waterloo Region will begin their training as team leaders, and learn how to construct a prototype of an easy-to-build home for transportation down south later this summer.

Elmira’s Marilyn McIlroy has been working with the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada, Vancor Homes and a community in Haiti for several months, getting the prototype ready for presentation.

McIlroy said she has been impressed and proud of the outpouring of support that came from Woolwich Township. More than $80,000 was donated to the Yvonne Martin memorial fund, to be given to Haitian youth interested in pursuing medical studies.

“The support that Haiti saw from our community was incredible, and I think it is so important. We have been blessed with so much. It is not necessarily a bad thing to be blessed with so much, but it is certainly our responsibility to care for our neighbours.

And our neighbours are not just in Elmira, or Waterloo Region, or even Canada, but they are global.”

McIlroy is currently in Haiti continuing with the needs assessment project, while staff at EMCC prepare for this weekend’s training in Kitchener.

visit a number of communities and assess which areas could use the most aid.

The project is set to take place in two phases. The first is the building of 1,000 homes in rural Haiti at a cost of $8,000 per house plus shipping. The homes will be manufactured in Canada and shipped to Haiti, where the teams will train the Haitians to do the assembly themselves.

During phase two of the project, EMCC hopes to establish a manufacturing plant in Haiti to produce the panels, supplying the country with a safe housing option on a long-term basis. The goal is to create jobs for Haitians in areas of manufacturing, transportation, construction and management.

“They (Vancor) are doing this as a relief and development exercise, rather than a project to make money,” said Geense. “The owner wants to get these houses to people who need them.”

The event is being held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 214 Highland Road E. in Kitchener and is open to interested builders/ leaders willing to go to Haiti to lead local and volunteer teams in rebuilding for the internally displaced persons living outside of Port au Prince.

> CONTINUED FROM pg. 05 one has a story. The No. 9, a 1923 steam engine, was the last operating steam locomotive in industrial service in Canada, working along the Windsor waterfront until 1963. They’re hoping to have it in good working order by the end of the year and ready for special steam runs next summer.

“People are very interested in steam engines,” said Ron Dancey, president of SOLRS. “Everyone knows what a steam engine is, but almost no one has seen one

operating.”

Ticket sales pay for the operation of the railway and maintenance on the train.

They rely on grants and donations to acquire new cars and locomotives. To build the new shop, the society got a $483,000 grant from Industry Canada and put in $50,000 of its own money.

In another month or two, when all the finishing touches are put on the building and all the tools and equipment have been moved inside, the doors will be thrown open to the public for a grand opening.

Development: Woolwich to look at opportunities > CONTINUED FROM pg. 05 “Woolwich has an important role to play in the economic development of Waterloo Region. We’re strategically located between the region’s [cities] and the City of Guelph.”

In fact, regional forecasts have already identified Woolwich – specifically the area around Breslau – as the center of future industrial growth. In the last few years, there has been a focus on developing employment lands in that part of the

township.

Growth plans see development of new industrial land starting in the north part of Cambridge, in an area surrounding the intersection of Fountain Street and Middle Block Road. Stage two would be slightly to the north, on hundreds of acres engulfing the Region of Waterloo International Airport.

The third stage would involve land surrounding Breslau itself, while stage four would see the development of property northeast of

the village, along Hwy. 7 and Shantz Station Road.

Woolwich’s location and the availability of land means there will be plenty of opportunities, said Brenneman, adding the key is to develop a plan rather than letting things happen haphazardly.

That’s especially true if the township hopes to lure technology firms – its proximity to Waterloo is helpful in that regard. With growing investments in environmental projects such as wind and

Census changes shouldn't be a rush decision T

he hubbub over Conservative plans to scrap the mandatory long-form census has pundits in an uproar. The public has been yawningly indifferent.

It appears, however, the federal government will have to reverse course on this one, especially now that the resignation of Statistics Canada head Munir Sheikh has given lie to Industry Minister Tony Clement’s claims the agency was on side.

The decision to make the protracted form a voluntary part of the 2011 Census was purely ideological: many people see it as an invasion of privacy, a case of big government prying into their business. They’re right. Any information collected beyond basic facts – age, sex, place of residency – goes beyond the original intent. But

that doesn’t mean Stephen Harper has made the right decision.

The census has grown to the point where it provides data for a variety of governmental, business and social studies. Groups as diverse as scientists, non-profit agencies and academics have all decried the government’s plan to change the census. Information gleaned from the census is the basis of government policymaking, for instance.

In 2006, the last census year, forms were sent to 13.5 million households. The short questionnaire contained eight questions and was completed by 80 per cent of households. The long questionnaire, sent to one in five homes, contained the same questions as the short form plus 53 additional questions.

ing StatsCan choose a broad crosssection, the general population would in effect be self-screening, skewing the results. That would render data collected in 2011 out of line with that taken from previous censuses, the mandatory long-form survey having been in place for three decades.

While the long form is invasive and coercive, we’re told the ends justify the means. We give up a little to gain much more. There’s a tradeoff. That should be the basis of a debate about the proposed changes.

Given that the next census falls in 2011 and the government made the decision to scrap the long form in isolation, it’s probably best to allow for business as usual next year. A protracted discussion could then be held in advance of the next one, five years later.

Europe in the grip of hysteria over veil M

onkey see, monkey do. Soon after France’s National Assembly passed a law making it illegal to wear a full-face veil in public, British MP Philip Hollobone announced a private member’s bill last weekend that would make it illegal for people to cover their faces in public in Britain. Neither bill mentioned Muslims by name, of course.

Hollobone has previously called the Islamic veil “offensive” and “against the British way of life,” so we may safely assume that his bill is not aimed at people wearing motorcycle helmets.

We can also assume that it will never become law, for British immigration minister Damian Green immediately replied that “telling people what they can and can’t wear, if they’re just walking down the street, is a rather un-British thing to do.”

Good: the last thing anybody needs is for another major European state to copy the French initiative. But it cannot be denied that a great many Europeans feel profoundly uneasy when they see these shrouded, masked women moving silently in their midst.

I grew up in regular contact with women wearing traditional Middle Eastern costumes, and it didn’t make me uneasy at all. They were Catholic nuns, wearing the head-to-toe shroud and with not a wisp of hair visible.

Their faces were not covered, but in other respects they were dressed just like the women that Philip Hollobone finds so offensive. Indeed, becoming a nun was colloquially known as “taking the veil.”

The veil is not Islamic at all. Indeed, it predates all the Abrahamic religions. They all come from the Middle

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER East, and that’s why they all – Jews, Christians and Muslims – used to be obsessed with female “modesty.”

The principle of “modesty” was a way of controlling the behaviour of women who had the power to upset the social order, so how poor women behaved didn’t matter. The early Mesopotamian laws ordaining the veiling of women applied only to the wives of powerful men. Several thousand years later, Greek, Roman and Byzantine upper-class women still went veiled, while their poorer sisters moved freely with their faces uncovered.

We cannot know what proportion of women in seventh-century, pre-Islamic Arabia went veiled, but until quite recently poorer and rural Arabian women, and especially Bedouin women, covered their hair but otherwise went unveiled. It seems a safe assumption that the situation was not much different in the Prophet’s time.

I do not presume to interpret the Quran, but its injunctions on veiling were simply an endorsement of existing social customs. I would also observe that most Muslim communities down through history have interpreted these customs as requiring the concealment of a woman’s hair but not her face.

Traditionally, only rich and powerful men’s wives and concubines wore niqab (a mask concealing all but the eyes) in most Muslim societies. The

burqa, a more extreme form of concealment that hides even the woman’s eyes behind a cotton mesh grill, was largely confined to the hill tribes of what is now the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier area.

So why have women in non-rich Muslim families living in major European cities now taken to wearing fullface veils or even burqas? Not a lot of women, to be sure: France estimates that only 2,000 women go about fully veiled, and the real numbers for Britain are unlikely to be much different.

But why are they doing it at all? Two generations ago, their grandmothers almost certainly did not.

One reason is fear, on their own part or that of their husbands, that the majority society’s values are so powerful and seductive that good Muslims must be completely isolated from it.

This also explains why you regularly see little girls as young as two or three wearing hijab (i.e. with their hair completely covered ) in Paris and London: their parents believe that the habit must start very early if it is to withstand the majority society’s influence.

A second reason is defiance: think of it as a non-gay version of “we’re out and we’re proud. Get used to it.” And both anecdotal evidence and personal observation suggest to me that a large proportion of the fully veiled women in Britain – maybe as many as half – are actually recent converts to Islam who grew up in the dominant postChristian culture. Same for France.

Converts often get carried away.

So which part of this is a threat to public order? None of it, obviously.

Wage gap the top priority in tackling deficits I

t was no love-in this week as Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan met with public sector union leaders to discuss a plan to freeze wages when the current crop of collective agreements expire.

Having frozen the wages of some 350,000 non-unionized workers in last spring’s budget, Duncan now has his sights set on some 710,000 unionized employees as the government tackles a deficit expected to reach $19.7 billion next year.

Unlike this week’s reversal of course on eco fees, the public hopes the government stays the course.

As the government’s single-largest expense, salaries have to come into play when looking to bring spending under control. And because the gap between public sector wages and comparable wages in the private sector has been growing, now is the time for a correction.

The gap has become sizeable.

In its most recent study of the issue – Wage Watch: A Comparison of Public-sector and Private-sector Wages – the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) shows there’s reason for concern.

Using figures from the 2006 Census, they found public sector employees earn eight to 17 per cent more than their counterparts in the private sector. Adding in benefits and a shorter workweek, among other perqs, and the advantage widens to more than 30 per cent. Across the country, the premium paid to civil servants amounts to another $19 billion in ex-

Not because the French are more anti-Muslim than the British, but because they are the heirs of one of the great battles between religion and the secular state.

Britain hasn’t seen such a battle since the 17th century, and the official religion just gradually retreated to the sidelines of modern life without a fight. The fight was long, bitter and much more recent in France, so the French state takes public displays of religious allegiance a lot more seriously. But it is still behaving stupidly.

And what about Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland, where similar bans have been or are being discussed at the national level? They should be ashamed of themselves.

The report does not mince words about the impact of this widening gap and what that means to taxpayers.

“The findings of this latest study … suggest that governments as a group are losing control of the employment costs – benefits costs in particular. Coupled with a large increase in public sector employment in the past year, such cost premiums exert pressure on government expenditures and give poor value-formoney returns to taxpayers.”

While not begrudging anyone a decent living wage, the study emphasizes an unfair disparity that needs to be corrected, says Satinder Chera, CFIB’s vice-president for Ontario.

“It doesn’t make any sense that you have such dramatic pay discrepancies,” he says. “The government is wise to start curtailing their spending – people start wondering ‘where is my money going?’”

Between 2004 and 2008, the number of employees in the public sector grew by 8.7 per cent, to 3.3 million from 3 million.

The total number of employees in the sector is pushing 20 per cent of the national workforce of 17.2 mil-

lion, according to figures from Statistics Canada.

While employment numbers are growing, wages are increasing at a more rapid clip. The cost of salaries and wages alone rose by 22.6 per cent between 2004 and 2008, outstripping the pace of hiring. (Total cost of salaries and wages: $169 billion, of which $65.2 billion was in Ontario.)

Those figures also indicate a growing gap between civil service wages and the average earning of private sector employees. The discrepancy is likely to increase, as average industry wages will remain stagnant or decline dramatically in some industries as a result of the recession, recovery from which remains classified as jobless.

Dealing with these “growing inequities” won’t be easy, Chera admits.

It will be a long process, one he hopes the unions cooperate with, though he’s not holding his breath.

“This is a problem that won’t get solved overnight. I hope the unions recognize the importance and cooperate. If that doesn’t happen, we need to see government take action, and pretty tough action.”

This doesn’t mean it’s open season on public workers. Dalton McGuinty, whose government has been more than generous to its employees, won’t be mistaken for Mike Harris.

Still, the public mood supports the idea that the pain should be shared equally, and that deficits must be tackled.

Throughout the downturn, gov-

ernment workers continued to enjoy regular pay increases, enhanced benefits and guaranteed pensions.

Now, the province intends to fight for freezes when then next round of negotiations begin, even if the economy has fully recovered. The idea is to restore some balance at the next available opportunity.

Also encouraging is a plan to begin reducing the size of the provincial public service by five per cent over the next two years, largely through attrition.

Smaller paycheques in the private sector mean there are fewer tax dollars to go ‘round, says Chera, noting belt-tightening is required. As “defenders of the public purse,” the government has to follow through on the stance taken this week by Duncan.

Long gone are the days of the poor, underpaid civil servant. Today’s reality is just the opposite. So much so that government is now actually competing with businesses for employees – paying more than the private sector can afford to offer, he notes.

Does government have the stomach to do what’s necessary? That’s a bit of crapshoot. But having staked out a position this week, Duncan has to come out of the process with something. Preferably something beneficial that the public can support rather than caving in to the unions.

“If the money ain’t there, the money ain’t there. We’ll be encouraging him to take action where he needs to.”

Residents expect proper vetting of biogas plans To the Editor,  Your article in the Observer of July 10 covering the proposed bio-waste disposal site in Elmira and the effort of a local citizen’s group to raise awareness about this project covered the topic pretty well.

I see that Bio-En president Chuck Martin has described the flyer as misleading and that it has had the overall effect to “paint a damning image of the proposed facility.”

Mr. Martin is certainly entitled to his opinion, of course. As for the information being wrong, we were very careful to use numbers that were supplied by Bio-En, so I don’t see how he could call them wrong.

At the public presentation by BioEn earlier this year, they gave the number of up to 80 trucks per day, and that’s the number we used. Mr. Martin tells us that the average will be lower, but these things have a way of changing over time and, after all, they did tell us that it could be up to 80 trucks per day.

Oh, and by the way, even at 15 trucks per day for the 312 days per year that they tell us they will be receiving waste, the total comes to 4,680 trucks per year.

The production of methane gas by a digestion process is certainly nothing new. What is new about this project is the size of the units and

the volume of material. Smaller units are common in many parts of the world, but facilities of this size are rare. There are none in Canada and few in other countries. Simply scaling up a smaller version will create its own set of problems that were not apparent in the design phase and need to be addressed. That has not been done before in Canada and, as far as I can determine, not been done by Ing. Gerhard Agrinz, Bio-En’s partner, which is supplying the technical know-how. Is this the location we want to have an experiment in biogas technology built?

Mr. Martin is accusing the local group of using “scare tactics” and presenting things “out of context,” and, as I said before, he is entitled to his opinion. In my opinion, and

the opinion of others of this group, Mr. Martin and his company have painted a far too rosy picture of what this plant will really be like and the impact it will have on this community. The residents of Elmira will not tolerate another polluting industry that will stink up the town.

I find it troubling to hear repeatedly from proponents of Bio-En and even a local politician, when referring to residents of the north end of Elmira, “what do they expect when they live near an industrial area?”

What we expect is land use conforming to the bylaws governing that particular industrial land, a use that won’t erode property values in Elmira. Should we expect any less?

Safe driving applies to buggies too To the Editor,  On July 11, I was on my way to Dreisinger’s Funeral Home in Elmira. I was approaching town from the east side at approximately 1:15 p.m. There were a lot of buggies on the road, most likely going home from church in West Montrose.

Why am I writing this letter? I saw something I'd never encountered in my more than 40 years of driving a car: a buggy and bicycle were travel-

ling side by side on the shoulder of the road, heading in the same direction I was going. What was so disturbing was the fact that the young gentleman on the bicycle was hanging onto the buggy seat with one hand, steering with the other. The bicycle was between my car and the buggy.

I hate to think what could have happened had I been a truck and

However, I feel this was inappropriate behaviour.

I also feel strongly that all vehicles using local highways should have to be registered with Ministry of Transportation. It should

also be mandatory to have a visible, valid licence on each vehicle. This should be renewable yearly, as is our car licence. It is a privilege to drive on major routes.

Let’s say an accident occurred. How would one go

about contacting the police to report the accident? How would a person identify the vehicles involved?

As a car driver, I am responsible for being an alert driver, for the safety of all people using the highway.

Why should these people be any different?

Hopefully the two young gentlemen (both likely in their early twenties) will see this letter and, in future, avoid such rash behaviour.

hanges to Ontario’s solar energy incentive program have applicants and manufacturers crying foul.

In October 2009, hoping to stimulate investment in green energy, the province unveiled the micro feed-in tariff program (microFIT).

Farmers, homeowners and small business owners could install small solar arrays (under 10 kilowatts) and sell the power to the Ontario Power Authority at a price that was guaranteed for 20 years.

On July 2, the power authority quietly announced that the price for power generated using ground-mounted solar arrays would drop from 80.2 cents to 58.8 cents per kilowatt hour. Smaller rooftop systems aren’t affected by the change.

OPA painted the change as fixing a “glitch” in the system when ground-mounted projects proved far more popular than anticipated. The government received 16,000 applications, of which 10,000

were for ground-mounted systems.

The change caught applicants and manufacturers of solar equipment flat-footed.

“This rate cut on the ground-mounted systems caused everyone that had an application in or a deposit in to cancel orders,” said John Hubman, president of H-Y Manufacturing, located outside of Elora.

H-Y Manufacturing makes tracking systems that allow ground-mounted solar arrays to follow the sun, maximizing their power output.

They started building the tracking systems after the program was announced, investing $150,000 in machinery and another $150,000 in research and development.

In early fall 2009, still in the depths of the recession, Hubman had six employees.

By November, with orders pouring in, he was hiring people back and soon added a second shift. The company went from building one or two systems a week to building between eight and 10.

Now, customers are can-

celling or putting their orders on hold and they aren’t building anything. The investment and the jobs created are now in jeopardy.

“Money aside, the worrisome part is the effect it’s going to have in laying people off. It’s back to the gloom days of the middle of last year,” Hubman said.

tering system he gets credit for his electricity costs, which works out to between six and 10 cents per kilowatt hour. At that rate, it will take him 50 years to pay off his investment.

Few Ontarians were willing to shell out tens of thousands of dollars and wait 50 years to recoup their costs, which is why Parker was happy to see the government making solar power more attractive. He believes the new price of 58.8 cents per kilowatt hour is appropriate, given that the costs of equipment have come down substantially.

“To my mind, how it’s implemented is the problem,” Parker said. “I can understand the frustration, if you make your decision based on one price and then find out you’re getting a different one.”

While many applicants and suppliers were taken by surprise by the price change, John Hogg has been waiting for something like this to happen. Hogg is president of Green Grid Solutions of

Waterloo and has been in the renewable energy business for 10 years. He says that 80 cents per kilowatt hour is an unheard-of price; in Europe, governments offer between 60 and 70 cents and people can’t believe it when he tells them Ontario was offering 80 cents.

“It was almost disappointing that the number was so high because it just created a frenzy and from experience with OPA, you know they’re going to claw back at a certain point.”

The biggest problem is that OPA intends to make the price cut retroactive to early 2010. People who submitted their applications and went ahead with securing financing and ordering the systems are now caught in the middle.

“It would make sense to say from this day forward we’re going to cut rates, but to make it retroactive … to go out to the communities and promote renewable energy, promote 80 cents and then make it retroactive to before

Food Day looms large for new couple A

s you read this column Saturday, I’ll be walking down the aisle, symbolically giving away my eldest daughter Alicia in marriage to a bright and ambitious young farmer named Mark. He, his dad and his uncle grow crops and raise livestock near Thamesville, on properties that have been a part of their family since the 1800s.

Alicia’s not a farm girl per se. But in some ways, agriculture’s always been part of her life.

For example, on Saturdays gone by, we’d go to Old McDonald’s Farm at the University of Guelph, during College Royal, and ogle at the fistulated cow. Or we’d drop by Donkey Days at the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, a rural marvel just outside Guelph.

Or we’d go east to the Erin Fall Fair on Thanksgiving weekend to watch border collies herd sheep.

And when she became a student at the University of Guelph, her interest in agriculture grew. She ran Project SOY, a contest in which students find innovative, marketable uses for soybeans, Ontario’s biggest cash crop.

She worked with her sister Kate as a student research writer, earning numerous bylines in farm-oriented magazines. For my part, I was fortunate to have her enrolled as a student in my agricultural communications course, where her knack for journalistic writing flourished.

But as far as really understanding

Food For Thought Owen Roberts what it’s like to be a farmer, the experiences I offered pale compared to the new life she’s entering. The tables have turned. From now on, when I want to know what a farmer thinks, as I often do, I’ll ask her. And I’ll hope she’s not too busy to fill me in, even though I know she will be.

It’s for people like Alicia and Mark and his family that Elora food guru Anita Stewart created the world’s longest barbecue in 2003, on the Civic Holiday weekend. At the time, the event was meant mainly to bolster the spirits of Canadian livestock farmers who were being pummeled by the aftermath of BSE. Participants were encouraged to go to their grocer, butcher, farmers’ market or wherever they buy meat, make a purchase, fire up the grill and support the sector.

Over the years, Stewart’s grown the event into a virtual barbecue, encouraging ex-pats and others no matter where (in 46 countries, at last count) to log onto a central website, post their menus and join others in showing their support for Canadian farmers. She’s hoping someday a brave federal government will name

the holiday Food Day, in honour of those who produce food.

I hope she’s right. It’s a wish I made even before Alicia and Mark became a farm couple, because I believe a country that doesn’t support its food sector is misguided. How, with any degree of conscience, can we accept a food system that provides for all the sector’s participants except those who actually produce food? It’s nonsensical, yet it’s exactly what’s happening right now. And we let it, even though agri-food is one of our biggest economic drivers.

Anyway, with Alicia and Mark now officially a couple, I’ll be embracing Food Day a little more passionately and personally than before. Stewart

has kicked it up a notch this year and drawn some of Canada’s top chefs and restaurants into the July 31 event, including Langdon Hall. That’s great. It raises the profile without doubt. And some communities, such as Elora, are hosting their own events locally, still keeping it a grassroots affair.

But to me, it’s still about farmers.

As Stewart says, other holidays are geared to those who eat food. This upcoming holiday is about those who farm the land and sea to provide that food.

Now, it’s about Alicia and Mark.

Here’s to the new couple, and to a life that rewards you for keeping us fed.

Hubman isn’t optimistic. He’s waiting for Aug. 3 when the comment period closes, but he’s afraid that he’ll be laying off employees again.

“I think it’s a forgone conclusion,” he said. “They hoodwinked a lot of people in Ontario saying that we’ll pay you 80 cents, go ahead and develop all of this and create jobs.”

The secret of their success Elmira couple celebrates 60 years of marriage TOGETHERNESS Elmira’s Ron and Doris Bock this week marked 60 years of marriage, citing a simple recipe for matrimonial success: listen, love and be patient.

I

n June 1948, Ron Bock took Doris Brodrecht on their first date: a screening of the film ‘Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House.’ The Cary Grant movie depicts the tale of a couple moving from the Big Apple into a gigantic home in the country, but Ron doesn’t remember a single thing about it.

“I can’t tell you anything about the movie, I’m afraid,” said Ron. “I wasn’t really paying attention; I was too excited that she was there with me.”

This week, the Elmira couple is celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

Their relationship started, fittingly, at a wedding. Ron and Doris had each come alone to their friend’s Kitchener nuptials; as fate would have it, they were seated next to each other at dinner.

“Some people call it love at first sight,” Ron said this week. “I believe in that now.”

Details of their conversation that night have been lost along the way, but both Ron and Doris remember spending the night chatting and laughing and dancing together.

“I was smitten,” said Ron, who mustered up the courage to ask Doris if she would like to go out on a date with him. To his delight, she agreed. A short while later, the two of them took taxis – Doris from her Bloomingdale home and Ron from his home in Kitchener – into town and went to see the film.

Ron decided soon after that if he was to keep seeing a girl from Bloomingdale, he needed a better way to get to her than taking a taxi, so he enlisted a friend to

teach him how to drive and purchased his first vehicle, a Pontiac coupe.

On July 22, 1950, the two wed at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Kitchener

I wasn’t a Romeo or a Don Juan or anything like that.

I dated other girls and I never once thought of them as a potential wife. When I met Doris, it was altogether different.

“It wasn’t a big wedding,” noted Doris.

Right from the day I met her at the wedding I knew, that was the gal I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. It was just a chemistry I guess.”

Ron spent many years working as an optometrist in Elmira, and Doris stayed at home with their children. Throughout the years, they had their share of everyday struggles, said Ron, but nothing that love and a strong faith couldn’t get them through. The couple is now proud parents to David, Rhonda and Cindy. They are grandparents to eight and great-grandparents to another three children, with one more on the way.

“Being a grandparent is a

whole lot easier than being a parent,” said Ron with a laugh. “The kids come over for a while and you can spoil them if you feel like it and then send them home. We were very lucky: we have great kids and a great family.”

These days, the couple is living separately; Doris lives in the long-term care facility at Chateau Gardens in Elmira and Ron is only a few blocks away in a townhouse. Originally, they had bought the townhouse and were planning to live there together, but about five years ago Doris began showing signs of Alzheimer’s, was admitted to hospital and eventually transferred to a place where she can get the kind of attention she needs.

The sculpted shoes are all oneof-a-kind and are inspired by historical and current styles with a whimsical appeal. Kelly Ripa from Regis & Kelly is the owner of one of her shoes. These three shoes in production will be displayed in the Homer Watson Gallery from Nov. 14 to Dec. 19.

Council awards for particular pieces she has created. In 2005 she received the Best Hand-Built award for a vase, and in 2008 she won a Best of Show for one of her patented shoe designs. The

two pieces currently reside in the the potters’ collection located in Waterloo Park.

4) ART ON WALL

> The only art in the room that is

not their own. Former artist Vlodek Klingofer was a friend who helped the couple build a Raku kiln. This piece came to them on his death.

5) POTTER’S WHEEL

> This is Vlodek’s second potter’s

wheel that has never been used.

Years ago Vlodek took a course and

purchased one afterward. He sold it after years of never using it. Five years ago he bought this one to try again and has yet to use it.

6) FLOWERS

> Vlodek likes to call these

“clay-ogenical flowers.” They’re all-season and keep on blooming for years. Vlodek created this line four years ago and continues to improve the product. Metal stalks hand-welded by his Mennonite neighbour have made the flowers more practical and less likely to

break in the elements.

7) OIL PAINTINGS

> Oil painting is new to Danuta,

who has painted with watercolour and acrylic most of her life. The soft colours and subject matter continue her whimsical approach to art. Inspired by body language, she creates a story by featuring the subject from the waist down.

8) TEAPOT > Some would say the greatest form of flattery is imitation.

Danuta doesn’t always feel that way after creating and now pioneering the idea of the sculptured shoe. Now the shoe has become inspiration for other artists. She has added her signature whimsy and creative touch to these non-functional teapots. She created this one for an exhibition in Bayfield, and will sell it for $340. The makeshift showroom at the front of the studio travels with them to shows and contains a full complement of their work.

9) STORAGE

> Much of the storage space is

filled with clay animals which Vlodek sells wholesale across Canada and the US. The series started with three animals 15 years ago and has since expanded to 30. Cats are the best sellers.

common glazes as well as homemade varieties. They continually experiment with new colours.

The secret to this German Potato Salad is the pickle juice. Any potato salad that you plan on making should be dressed while the potatoes are still warm, that way the potatoes will soak up all of the flavour you plan on giving it. When cooking potatoes, start cooking them in cold water and then simmer them slowly, in large or whole pieces in order that they cook evenly without falling to pieces and absorbing too much water. Salt your water, really salt it so that the potatoes become seasoned while cooking.

Cook the potatoes in simmering salted water until just tender. Drain and allow to dry slightly by laying them out on a sheet pan. While the potatoes are still hot, remove the peels and slice the potatoes 8 mm thick;

German Potato Salad Serves 10 > 1 kg waxy potatoes (Yukon Gold works well)

> 3 g salt (or to taste)

> 60 g diced bacon

> 4 g sugar (or to taste)

> 600 ml chicken stock

> White pepper (to taste)

> 60 ml pickle juice or white wine vinegar

> 60 ml vegetable oil

> 1/2 cup finely diced sour pickles

> 30 g grainy mustard

> 1/2 cup diced white onion

> 1/2 bunch chives, chopped

While the potatoes are cooking, prepare the dressing: render the bacon by cooking it slowly until crisp; remove it from the pan with a slotted spoon, and keep it warm; Bring the chicken stock, vinegar, onions, salt, sugar and pepper to a boil; Combine the oil, rendered bacon fat, and mustard with the warm potatoes. Pour over the onions and then add the boiling stock-vinegar mixture over potatoes. Add the rendered bacon and chives; toss the salad gently; taste for seasoning.

evening, he kisses her goodbye and returns to his house just down the road.

“Theirs is a very loving relationship,” said the couple’s son David, who worked with Ron as an optometrist. “From them I learned that

marriage is hard work, but if you can persevere, it is definitely worthwhile. The togetherness they have is incredible.”

For the couple who hope to get the family together to celebrate at the end of the summer, the recipe for a

good marriage is simple: listen, love and be patient – always.

“I have somebody who loves me,” said Doris.

“That goes both ways,” echoed Ron. “We all search for that, don’t we?”

Horseshoe tournament a family tradition M

anser Road will be lined with cars this weekend as neighbours, family and friends of Linwood’s Basler family come together for the sixth annual horseshoe tournament in honour of the late Bernice Basler.

The tournament started in 2003, almost exactly one year following the unexpected death of Bernice, who was only 53 years old when she suffered a heart attack.

Since the backyard of their Linwood home was one of her favourite places, the family thought it was only fitting to hold a celebration in her memory each year in the same place.

“When my mom died, it was tough for everyone,” said Scott Basler.

“We wanted to get everybody back in a good mood. Anytime that mom could be in the backyard she was happy.”

Although it began as simply a get-together, the family realized that visitors were willing to donate money to the event and so they began collecting donations for local organizations.

Over the years that the tournament has been running, more than

$3,000 has been raised for local charities and community groups.

Among those benefitting from the efforts have been local Lions Clubs and baseball teams; the group even purchased a seat at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.

This year, however, will be the family’s last tournament at their Linwood home.

“My dad has lived in the same house since he married my Mom in 1970,” explained Basler.

“He is planning to sell the house, so this will be our last summer our there. It has been tough knowing that he will be leaving soon.”

The tournament will start at 10 a.m. Saturday and games, barbecue and celebrating will continue until around 6 p.m. The brackets for the tournament are now full, but the Basler family is inviting all community members to come out and enjoy the barbecue at 3 p.m.

“We have called some of dad and mom’s old friends and invited them for the day,” said Basler.

“But anyone is welcome to come and join us in the afternoon. We are really looking forward to having our friends and family together for one last time at the house.”

It’s the first time since 1994 that the Canadian women haven’t won gold at the worlds, but it was an improvement over their fifth-place finish at the 2008 Paralympics.

11-point deficit in the first quarter of the bronze medal game and outscored Australia 40-20 in the second half on their way to a 5949 win.

Janet McLachlan of Vancouver, BC, led the team in scoring with 18 points while Elmira’s Katie Harnock potted five points.

The team now shifts its focus to next year’s qualification tournament for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

ood, better, best. Never let it rest until your good is better and your better is best.”

This mantra is quite a mouthful for anyone, but is especially impressive coming from Samuel Rahbek-Ward, an 18-year-old Alberta man with cerebral palsy whose parents were told that he would likely never be able to speak. This week, Rahbek-Ward visited London, Ontario with his parents to participate in the 2010 Special Olympics Summer Games and then paid a visit to their good friend Dave Reimer in Elmira.

Reimer is a certified hyperbaric technician who operates out of an office on Arthur Street in Elmira, having made the switch from his career in underwater welding and commercial diving.

The shift came after an industrial accident a number of years back caused severe damage to Reimer’s foot. Seeking

alternative options to the recommendation by his doctor to have the foot amputated, he came to see Gordon Ward, director of the hyperbaric oxygen therapy facilities located at the Edmonton General Hospital. Reimer’s foot has now completely recovered, which

I couldn’t believe how fast I was going through the water. I can’t wait to go home and tell my friends.

Samuel Rahbek-Ward he credits to the hyperbaric therapy, and a friendship was formed between Reimer and Ward.

Ward first became involved with hyperbaric treatment when his son Sam was born with cerebral palsy, a physical disability with symptoms of varying severity depending on the individual.

“His original prognosis was about as bad as you can get,” said Ward. “The doctors said he would be vegetative and non-verbal.”

After the prognosis, his family searched for options, and then took him to the hyperbaric clinic at McGill University in Montreal for oxygen-therapy treatment.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy promotes healing by quickly delivering a high concentration of oxygen to affected areas of the body. The chamber is sealed and the atmospheric pressure is increased. The patient then breathes 100 per cent oxygen through a mask or hood, taking breaks to breathe regular air.

Breathing pure oxygen at a level higher than atmospheric pressure increases the amount of oxygen in tissues and increases the transport of oxygen by plasma in the blood.

Days of thunder … and getting away with things W

e have had three or four vicious electrical storms in these parts over the last day or two. One featured hail the size of golf balls – just for once, I wish that I were on a golf course watching golfers when this happened – the rest were heavy rains with dramatic shows of lightning.

In any case, these weather events have miraculous spinoffs – the sky darkens quickly, torrents of rain ruin visibility, thunder and lightning shake the landscape and my youngest lab, Scarlett, suddenly appears on the couch.

This last item is the most amazing of all.

To get there, you see, Scarlett will have had to overcome several serious obstacles, not the least of which is her innate Labrador laziness. With this characteristic lethargy swept aside, she then needs to jump her kennel fence, sneak past my wife (no easy thing, believe me) and then curl up on a couch that

ful feat. Generally, it means banging her feeding bowl loudly every time meal time arrives so that the dog associates loud, abrupt noises with good things – in this case food.

Then, you get out a .22 starter pistol and begin shooting it while having your dog complete a few retrieves – which Scarlett is keen on doing.

Again, the idea is to associate noise with good things.

Eventually, you keep making the noise louder and louder, until the dog thinks nothing of the sound of a 12 gauge. I have never seen a dog that does not eventually get over a little gun shyness, especially when rewarded with the obvious joys of being able to roam the marsh with a duck in its mouth.

Having said that, it has occurred to me the Scarlett just might be faking all of this too. After all, she was at my side earlier this spring while I was patterning my turkey loads – and this didn’t seem to bother her a bit.

Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea has been declared off limits to anyone of the canine persuasion – all this before the second thunderclap rattles the windows of our house.

Yes, my future hunting dog is terrified of thunder.

This, of course, doesn’t bode well for a duck-hunting dog, which I hope Scarlett will become. The good part is that I have some time to condition her to the sound of gunshots before the season starts.

If this doesn’t work, I’ll resort to plan B, which essentially consists of placing a comfortable couch in the duck blind. Which, come to think of it, is not too bad of an idea.

If she is faking, and the more I think of it, the better this theory sounds, that would make Scarlett the most brilliant duck dog that ever swam through the cattails. I mean to take advantage of an unrelated situation in order to gain the comfort of a forbidden couch indicates a startling level of cunning and cognitive power.

I mean, while Scarlett was curled up on that couch, my wife, the one who banished her, actually felt sympathy for the poor creature. Heck, she brought her a snack, spoke softly to her, and tucked a blanket over the dog. And Scarlett, now that I recall, couldn’t help but wag the tip of her tail.

There’s just some unwritten rule with women that says they can’t be cruel to a dumb creature that is afraid of a noise or event. Instead, they dote on it and spoil it.

This has given me a good idea.

And I’ll have to try it, next time my wife starts up the vacuum …

Aquaducks finally get to play host

The team has a number of new swimmers this year, thanks in part to the new pool.

Parents bringing their kids to the arena for hockey or figure skating saw the new facility, learned about the Aquaducks and signed up their children.

Despite their smaller numbers and a sizable group of new members, they’ve done well so far this season, Nicholson said.

Ward decided then that if others weren’t going to provide the treatments to his son, he would have to do it himself, becoming certified in hyperbaric therapy. Samuel has been in treatments since he was six years old, and now goes for near-daily sessions.

Three years ago, Sam began a new type of therapy: swimming. Now, after years of physical therapy, weight-training, lessons in the pool and intensive hyperbaric treatments, the young man can walk with the help of a walker, has excellent grasp of lan-

guage and just recently won four medals at the Special Olympics for his swimming skills, accomplishments that his family credit to the hyperbaric treatments and a whole lot of dedication.

“To me, Sam represents the spirit of hard work,” said Ward. “All of the athletes at the event this past weekend were fantastic, and what amazes me is knowing how much extra effort they have to put in to get to where they are.”

Sam underwent a number of experimental surgeries at a young age, rendering his leg muscles fragile, so he relies only on his arms to carry him through the water.

“Doctors back then didn’t know how to

treat kids with cerebral palsy,” said Ward.

“They tried a few different things to help him with mobility, but how he is able to walk now is probably the best we are going to see.”

Sam trains in the pool three times per week with volunteer coaches, and in the gym an additional two times per week. His hard work has paid off, and for his efforts he will bring home to Alberta a gold medal for his 25-metre race, a silver medal for the 25-metre and the 50-metre freestyle races and a bronze medal for his 25-metre backstroke race.

“I couldn’t believe how fast I was going through the water,” said Rahbek-Ward. “I can’t wait to go home and tell my friends.”

Swimmers practice twice a week during the year, which is divided into four sections.

The summer session is usually the smallest, as some kids opt out of competing and return in the fall. Although they do have a series of meets during the summer, the Aquaducks are still a recreational swim club. Swimmers who decide they want to be more serious about competing move on to the Region of Waterloo swim club after a year or two.

Today’s meet gets underway around 9 a.m. and should wrap up around lunchtime.

or the past few years, the Elmira Aquaducks have been the perpetual guests – always the hosted, never the hosts. The shabby old Elmira pool was simply too small to hold all the competitors and their parents, so all of their meets were on the road.

That changes today (July 24) when the club hosts the semi-finals of the South Western Ontario Regional Swimming Association.

Close to 150 swimmers from Elmira, Kincardine and Fergus will dive into the new pool in the Woolwich Memorial Centre.

“The other two teams are really looking forward to coming,” said Cindy Nicholson, the team’s manger. “A lot of parents have said ‘I can’t wait to see the new facility.’”

The parents will have a good view too, keeping an eye on the competition from the lobbies upstairs and downstairs.

A dead woman’s tale shines light on Palestine I

f the way to tell a complicated story is to personalize it, then My Name is Rachel Corrie does just that in explaining the plight of Palestinians living in areas occupied by Israeli soldiers.

Corrie, a 23-year-old American peace activist, was killed – some say murdered – on Mar. 16, 2003 by an Israeli Army bulldozer as she and some colleagues tried to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home. Her death made headlines worldwide and inspired more than 30 songs, two plays, and a documentary, raising questions about the Arab-Israeli conflict that are hard to answer, and perhaps even harder to ask.

Her story, from an idealistic young girl in Olympia, Washington to her exploits with the International Solidarity Movement in Gaza, unfolds in the play to be presented next week at Kitchener’s Registry Theatre.

With words taken from Corrie’s journals and e-mail messages,

noted actor Alan Rickman and British journalist Katherine Viner bring to life the young woman’s take on the longstanding conflict between Palestinians and Israelis.

The play has been contentious since it was first staged in 2005, both because of the issues it tackles and the debate over how Corrie died (the Israelis called it an accident, while witnesses say otherwise).

The controversy is not an issue for Majdi BouMatar, who runs the Multicultural Theatre Space (The MT Space) in Kitchener. The group in known for such productions as The Last 15 Seconds, which looks at terrorism, and Seasons of Immigration, which tackles the trials and tribulations of settling in a new country.

Having read the script, he was eager to welcome the production by Burlington-based Tottering Biped Theatre.

“It’s a phenomenal play because of how sincere it is,” said BouMatar. “When I read the play, I couldn’t put it down.”

THEATRE ON THE EDGE Majdi Bou-Matar's MT Space theatre group is not one to shy away from the controversy surrounding My Name is Rachel Corrie, to be staged next week at the Registry Theatre.

Israeli commandos on a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for Gaza in May – nine people were killed – the conflict in the region is once again in the spotlight.

“We think this is an immediate, urgent issue – a highly politicized topic,” he said.

Part of Bou-Matar’s fascination with the story was the international coverage about a young American woman being killed contrasted to the muted reaction to the fact Palestinians are killed on a regular basis.

“What’s the value of a human life? Some seem to be more valuable than others.”

Corrie’s story, however, serves to focus a spotlight on the region.

The language and imagery are compelling, said Trevor Copp, artistic director of Tottering Biped Theatre.

“Rachel Corrie is a vital way ‘in’ to the Middle East crisis for North Americans because the play focuses on the entire life of a young American woman. She is familiar and her path to the Middle East is recognizable; we are or know someone

who would do this; we admire her. This is why her tragedy strikes us acutely,” he said.

“The experience of occupation that Palestinians face is quite unknowable for most Canadians; but through her we have a way to realize the enormity of the suffering there. Her suffering becomes our own.”

The controversy, and perhaps the association with Rickman, might prove helpful as MT Space offers a summertime show for the first time. My Name is Rachel Corrie also represents a departure from staging only its own productions, which Bou-Matar hopes to do more of.

“We’re planning to start presenting more work from others,” he said. “We present our own shows about every two years – they take time to produce – so this is a way to keep the momentum going.”

Who was the “king” of modern      shaving, well known to many a

Make that King Gillette  Camp 

(1855-1932), American inventor and businessman who in 1901, along with William Nickerson, introduced the   blade,    disposable some 25 years after the first safety razor, says Jack Challoner in    1001 Inventions That Changed the World.

Before the invention of the safety razor,  were evident   the dangers in  shaving in the traditional terminology of the      straight “cut-throat” razor, with shaving done by barbers  or trusted family members.

Defying those skeptics who believed it impossible, Gillette fashioned an ultra   thin, carbon steel, double-edged blade and eventually struck a deal to provide     member   safety razors and blades to every of the U.S. Army during World War I.  Later     innovations included the electric -or dry -shaver by Jacob     Schick (1928), the long-lasting stainless steel blade by the British company Wilkinson  Sword (1965), then even safer replaceable blade cartridges (1971) and entirely disposable razors (1971). Currently on     the drawing board are  eco-friendly recyclable and biodegradable razors.

Sometimes called “wolfman syndrome,” the rare but highly heritable disorder causes excessive dark hair across the body and face as well as enlargement of the head and facial features, reports Constance Holden in Science magazine.

Researchers today have determined that CGHT victims have genetic mutations, called copy number variations, where chunks of DNA are deleted.

There are at least 30 such cases in China, estimates Beijing geneticist Xue Zhang, 16 cases in just three particular families.

History’s most famous “bearded lady” was Julia Pastrana, a Mexican      Indian woman who danced and sang in a     in 19th-century traveling circus, dressed  off  hairy  clothes that showed her condition.     
