he future of transportation in Waterloo Region is transit – or at least, more of it.

Making a presentation to Wellesley council Monday night, regional planner Paula Sawicki acknowledged that the car will continue to be the primary mode of transportation in the region for the foreseeable future. However, more alternatives to automobile transportation are needed, especially as roads in the cities reach the limits of widening.

The new regional transportation master plan – designed to update the last plan completed in 1999 – has been in the works since 2007. The new plan puts more emphasis on transit and alternatives like walking and cycling.

Sawicki explained that the region splurged on building roads in the 1960s and 70s, but what was once excess capacity is rapidly being used up.

Workshop addresses safety concerns of online social networking Katie Edmonds

ellesley’s annual Art Round the Pond show is set for June 19, but this year’s show will be different from previous years, and certainly different from your typical art show. Committee members saw a need to shake things up a bit, and have put a bit of a modern twist on the event, broadening the range of art forms to include live music by local musicians, handcrafted jew-

Literacy rates for Ontario’s high school students have remained constant at about 84 per cent, as test results released this week show.

Administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), the 2010 Ontario secondary school literacy test was passed by 84 per cent of the 170,000 English-language students who took it in April. The success rate was comparable to past years: 85 per cent in 2009, and 84 per cent in 2008, 2007 and 2006.

The results posted by individual schools will be released June 16.

This loophole, which allows Facebook to take permanent ownership of all photos that are posted to the site is one that often goes unnoticed by adults, youth and children alike when they sign up for the world’s largest social networking site, and just one of the topics that will be covered at “Facebook 101,” a seminar being held June 16 at Park Manor Public School in Elmira.

“A lot of students don’t realize that what they put on the Internet is there forever,” explained Park Manor principal James Bond.

“Their photos, the comments they write to their friends, all of it.”

Created to educate students, parents and educators about the benefits and risks of using the likes of Facebook and Twitter, “Facebook 101” is a seminar put on by Chris Vollum of SocialMedia Trust. So far, the workshop has been delivered to more than 90,000 students throughout Ontario.

“Our school board is doing a big push towards the

“We try to shy away from the word ‘craft,’ as it makes people think of popsicle stick birdhouses and things like that,” Art Round the Pond committee member Jeff Quint said with a laugh.

“We are broadening our definition of art and trying to showcase the one-of-a-kind, handmade pieces.”

This year, being Art Round the Pond’s fifth anniversary, organizers are planning for the biggest event thus

far. Visual artists, potters, photographers, quilters, musicians and more will be showcasing their talents at this one-day original art exhibition and sale. The 40foot graffiti wall will surely be one of the highlights for youth in the area.

“Our local youth group is really interested in graffiti art, so the group coming in is a street-legal group of artists. They can show the group here where and how they can do it properly.”

With more than 25 artists and artisans from across Ontario showcasing and selling their works, five local musicians to show off their talents, a graffiti art demonstration by Ean Kool and Jay Woodfield, children’s activities by the Inspiring Minds Early Learning Centre and the ever popular silent auction, the event is sure to be a busy one, so long as the weather holds out. Ann Roberts, Woolwich Township’s trails coordinator, was the recipient Thursday night of the Volunteer Management Award at the fifth annual Volunteer Impact Awards in Kitchener.

She was recognized for involvement with the Township of Woolwich Environmental Enhancement Committee (TWEEC), Clean Waterways, Canagagigue Creek Bank Rehabilitation project and Girl Guides Yellow Fish project, among others.

“She is fiercely protective of the volunteers. Ann combines her leadership skills with her giving nature to encourage and promote volunteers in the community,” said a statement from the Volunteer Action Centre of K-W & Area in announcing Roberts’ win.

Recipients of the 2010 Volunteer Impact Awards were announced at a gala dinner on June 10 at the city hall in Kitchener. Awards were presented in five categories: business community partner, helping hands, innovative involvement, outstanding leadership and volunteer management.

Elmira couple charged in fraud investigation woman returned home to her Church Street apartment to find it had been broken into and trashed. A window was smashed, as well as the air conditioner and a coffee table.

Police believe the suspect may have cut themselves on the broken window upon entry; the investigation continues.

When police arrived shortly thereafter, the man was gone. In the daylight hours of morning, the homeowner noticed that his black dirt bike was missing from his shed.

The case involves financing for Emmanuel Village, a development with 42 townhouses and 103

apartment-style suites near the intersection of Weber Street East and Fergus Avenue in Kitchener. After an investigation that lasted more than two years and included numerous search warrants and production orders, police determined at least 79 victims lost more than $8 million.

Police believe there were more victims and are urging them to come forward as the investigation continues.

supply of parking and charging for it, so drivers face an immediate out-of-pocket cost.

Whether the emphasis on transit extends to the rural areas depends on the success or failure of the pilot bus route to Elmira that is now in its second year. If bus service to the townships is deemed worthwhile, the logical destinations for future routes would be New Hamburg and

The 2006 census found that 43 per cent of residents in the Kitchener census metropolitan area (all of Waterloo Region excluding Wilmot and Wellesley townships) live less than five kilometres from their workplace.

plan’s provisions apply to the urban areas, it was drafted with the rural areas in mind, Sawicki said. Easing congestion while preventing urban sprawl are underlying goals.

“That’s what we were aiming for – to stop the spread.”

The plan will be brought to the region’s planning and works committee for approval June 22.

he Region of Waterloo has launched a counterattack against the giant hogweed that has invaded the area.

Three university students have been appointed assistant weed inspectors and will be searching for the noxious plant by vehicle, on foot and by canoe.

The plant can grow three to five metres

tall and produces large numbers of white flowers. It was designated a noxious weed by the region in 2008 because of its invasiveness and its sap, which can be a health hazard. The clear, watery sap causes photosensitivity; if it makes contact with the skin and is exposed to sunlight, it can cause severe burns, blisters and scarring.

“If it’s raining that day, we will move into the Wellesley Arena,” he explained.

“We would rather not because it sort of goes against the ‘around the pond’ bit, but we have to be flexible.”

Art Round the Pond is an excellent opportunity for artists to showcase and sell their work, said Quint, noting there is still room for vendors who wish to get involved. It is open to all artists of original, handmade arts and crafts, in-

cluding, for instance, painting, photography, sculpting, carving, pottery, weaving, blown glass, and stained glass, jewelry and textiles.

“It can’t be a massproduced item,” explained Quint. “It has to be handmade, handcrafted. If you purchase an item at the show, you know that you have the only one.”

first brought from China to England for use as a decorative plant and then introduced to North America. It first appeared in the region a number of years ago.

Wellesley Coun. Paul Hergott urged the region last year to take a proactive approach to eradicating the plant.

Given giant hogweed is present in all three cities and four townships, he feels it’s best to take a region-wide approach to the problem.

The students, who are studying horticultural or biomedical sci-

ences, are working out of the Wellesley Township office. They’ll be notifying property owners when they find the weed and advising them on the best way to eradicate it. They will also be doing followup inspections to see whether it’s been taken care of, and reporting any non-compliant property owners to Larry Martin, the region’s weed inspector.

Marty Sawdon, head of the region’s licensing and enforcement division, said Martin can issue an order for the

weeds to be removed, and if that fails, the region can take care of the problem and the property owner will be billed for it. He doesn’t expect that step will be necessary; in five years on the job, Martin has issued only one order.

The students will be focusing their attention on the region’s townships, where giant hogweed flourishes in pastureland and along waterways. Each plant can produce more than 10,000 seeds, which it drops into the water, to be carried down-

stream. Sawdon noted that of the three cities, Waterloo has the biggest problem with giant hogweed, because the seeds follow the watercourse.

Sawdon noted that it will be tough to completely eradicate the plant, but the region is hoping to control its spread and prevent people from being injured.

Reading club launches this week at library

Program aims to keep kids reading through the summer, preparing them for September Katie Edmonds

ractice makes perfect’ is certainly true when it comes to reading. Adding to that practice time is the goal at the Elmira library as it kicks off its summer reading club next month.

Beginning this week, kids of all ages and grade levels can come in and register for the 15th annual TD Summer Reading Club –

Canada’s largest reading club for kids which officially gets rolling locally on July 6.

With every book read by or read to a participating child, he or she receives a stamp on a progress sheet.

Children who read more than nine books throughout the summer are given a certificate to commemorate their accomplishment.

“The main purpose of the project is to get kids

reading,” explained Bette Cummings of the children’s department at the Elmira branch.

“If they stop reading when they are not in school, their reading skills get worse. If they keep their reading skills up throughout the summer, they will do far better come September.”

Reading with a flashlight under the covers and imagining lions and tigers and mon-

keys will be a fun way for kids to keep up with their reading skills – this year’s theme is “Destination Jungle.”

Each age group has its own age appropriate reading list, which eliminates any guesswork for book selections.

More than 500,000 kids participated in last year’s program. Public libraries and TD Canada Trust branches distributed close to 400,000

free reading kits, making the summer reading club a popular summer activity. In 2009, kids across Canada collectively read more than 1.9 million books before heading back to school in September.

The Elmira library is hosting a number of events to go along with the program, including a visit by Elmira’s ‘frog man,’ Steve Racey, as well as others.

“Nothing stimulates

a child’s imagination like reading does,” said Cummings. “I just want the kids to keep coming in to visit us to get started with their books.”

No moral high ground in handling Iran

T

hough some of the saber-rattling has subsided, Iran continues to trouble the international community. This week, the United Nations Security Council imposed even tougher sanctions on the country’s Islamic regime, which continues to pursue nuclear technology.

From the recent crackdown and killing of protesters, to the seizure of British hostages and the murder of a Canadian journalist, Iran’s militant rulers have won themselves few friends in the world.

The sanctions have done little to date, mainly because they haven’t blocked oil exports, worth $100 billion a year. Therein lies the issue that arises in any discussion about the region: oil. We might not care for the people we get it from, but we want it nonetheless.

So far, concerns about Iran’s nu-

clear ambitions play second fiddle to the flow of oil, particularly to China and Russia, both of which have veto power at the Security Council.

The U.S., too, has much at stake in the region. More hawkish in their approach, although less so since Barack Obama succeeded George W. Bush, the Americans are proceeding warily nonetheless. While chastising Tehran, their hold on the moral high ground is precarious.

Having invaded Iraq under dubious pretexts, the U.S. position was steadily undermined by revelations that the reasons for war were unfounded.

Throw in the U.S. treatment of those it captures, and the West has some trouble with finger pointing.

Now, with Iran seemingly involved in the Iraq conflict, and its fundamentalist leaders attempting to expand the country’s nuclear capacity, the

Iran may indeed be a major threat to the region – there are plenty of experts who make a case for that stance. But the Americans and British, having been exposed as liars in Iraq, cannot now count on support for action against Iran, if only increased sanctions led by the United Nations.

Ironically, the case against Iran is much stronger than it was in Iraq.

Iran’s nuclear posturing and fundamentalist bent are far larger threats.

Still, that country is only of interest because of its natural gas and oil reserves, and for its strategic location.

If Iraq is any model, those factors will play the largest role in whether the war expands to Iran.

them have to do with protecting human rights and ridding the world of an evil dictator. All of the countries making noises about Iraq are guilty to some degree for supporting dozens of vile regimes led by dictators who terrorized their own people. The United States, which supported Saddam Hussein for years, has a long record of backing, arming and aiding those who practiced atrocities. The list of repressive, often genocidal regimes is long (see Vietnam, Cambodia, East Timor, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Chile, Kosovo, Rwanda …); examples of righteous indignation leading to action and justice are much harder to find.

Right or wrong, the current war must be judged against this larger picture. The same applies to action against Iran. No one can rightly claim moral superiority.

How to break the Gaza blockade U

nited Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for an end to the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. Britain, France, Germany and Russia have done the same. After Israeli commandos killed nine peace activists last week aboard a ship that was trying to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, even U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the blockade “unsustainable and unacceptable.”

But how can it be ended?

Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, predictably, is brazening it out. He blames the victims for their own deaths. They were “violent Turkish terror extremists” on a “ship of hate”: people so violent and Turkish and terroristic and extremist that the poor Israeli commandos had no choice but to fire 30 bullets into the nine who were killed, and wound 30-odd others for good measure.

It’s a striking example of how Netanyahu bludgeons reality with words until it conforms to his purposes. Why does he need all those extra words?

Could there conceivably be “nonviolent Turkish terror extremists”? Or “violent Turkish terror moderates”?

Presumably he believes that if you pile on enough synonyms, some people will conclude that there must have been something bad about the victims.

Anybody with the slightest experience of the real world knows what must have happened on the deck of Mavi Marmara, the aid ship in question. A bunch of over-confident, undertrained Israeli commandos ran into unexpected resistance from activists, a few of whom had improvised but serious weapons like iron bars. Maybe one

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER or two had knives. And one or two of the commandos panicked and opened fire.

Then the rest of the commandos joined in, presumably thinking that the shooters were responding to a real threat. They all blasted away for 20 or 30 seconds, and when their magazines were empty there were 40 bodies on the deck, some writhing in pain and others lying very still. After that, there was nothing the commandos could do but come up with a story that excused their actions.

This atrocious event has put the Israeli policy of blocking supplies to the Gaza Strip in the spotlight and raises two questions. Does it really give Israel added security at a reasonable cost to Palestinians? And if it doesn’t, then how can it be ended?

The blockade of Gaza began in 2007, after Hamas, which does not recognise the legitimacy of the Israeli state, won a brief civil war and took control of the densely populated territory. It launched thousands of crude, homemade rockets against towns in southern Israel, killing 10 Israelis, so in early 2009 Israel attacked the Gaza Strip.

At least 1,300 Palestinians died, and only 13 Israelis. Since then Hamas has observed a ceasefire. Other Palestinian

militants still launch sporadic rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip, but only one person in Israel has been killed in the past 18 months. Yet the blockade continues unabated.

Only one-quarter of the normal volume of supplies makes it through the sole Israeli checkpoint. The 1.5 million people in the Strip have been reduced to abject poverty, and Israel seems determined to keep up the pressure until they reject Hamas (which they backed in free elections in 2007) and overthrow it. Just how they are to do that, however, is not clear.

Israel has the right to prevent weapons from entering the Gaza Strip, but it is hard to see how cement, macaroni, footballs, tomato paste and fruit juices (all banned) fit that description. In any case, the material to make the rockets has always come in through tunnels under the frontier with Egypt, and is unaffected by Israel’s blockade.

The blockade is simply collective punishment, which is illegal under international law. It has not overthrown Hamas, but instead has strengthened its control over the population. It should be ended, but how?

The Israeli government is now on the defensive on this issue, and a cheap and effective tactic would be to send another aid ship or flotilla to run the blockade every week or so. The cargo should be inspected and certified as weapons-free by the port authorities in Greece, Italy, France or wherever they sail from.

The blockade-runners should not agree to go to an Israeli port, because

Ignatieff well advised to keep things simple

C

anadians, I’d wager, would pick Jean Chrétien over Stephen Harper if an election were called today. That doesn’t mean, however, the Liberals should go back to the well, as much as all the recent talk indicates some of the party faithful would support just such a move.

Still, going back is a good idea, as in back to basics.

Start with scaling back the message. Keep it simple.

Canadians don’t like Harper. He’s cold and uncharismatic. The bar has been set fairly low, yet Michael Ignatieff hasn’t managed to hurdle it. We’d rather go for a beer with Jack Layton, but we’re not too keen on the NDP and its policies.

What does that assortment of facts mean? Ignatieff needs to exhibit more warmth than the robot inhabiting 24 Sussex Dr. while articulating a few simple policies that jibe with our centrist inclinations.

Biology is important: we like to think we make intellectual choices, using our brains, but invariably default to our guts and our hearts.

That’s where the message needs to resonate.

We want many things from our government – often conflicting things – but a simple slate makes much more sense. Just distill things down to what matters most, defining what kind of leader you are.

Don’t keep dreaming up new ways to spend our money – we have too many of those already. Don’t feel the need to comment on everything – an endless stream of releases and

They seemed honest, with a moral compass others could follow. (That the reality was just the opposite seems to matter little, though Bush’s reputation began crumbling even while he was in office.)

It’s that kind of presence that politicians aim for, though neither leader of the two main parties comes even close.

For Ignatieff, simplifying looks like the only road to a longer stay at the helm. Though he hasn’t even contested an election, some of the same grumblings that did in Stéphane Dion are already prevalent in

the party.

This is understandable, given that the Liberals have made little headway against Conservatives, despite our dislike for Harper and his policies. The Conservatives mismanage the nation’s finances, show no grasp of economics, squander money on pet projects of no value to Canadians (see the G8/G20 boondoggle) and lack honesty and openness despite promises to the contrary.

You’d think the Liberals would be much further ahead under the circumstances.

While Ignatieff works on his charisma, he should try to reach Canadians on an emotional level. That means understanding our values.

Yes, we take pride in our health care system, but simply enumerating a list of additions or improvements as a policy statement won’t cut it. You need to tell us the human impact of reduced wait times, for instance: sell the benefits, not the features.

There are all kinds of polls indicating what Canadians want. We want more government spending.

We want less government spending.

We want more law enforcement.

We don’t want a police state. We want more infrastructure money.

We want less government waste. We want William Shatner to be our next governor general. We want to do away with the monarchy.

There’s a poll for everything, and results for every position. Many of them are inherently self-serving.

then their cargo would fall victim to Israel’s blockade rules. (Almost all of Mavi Marmara’s 10,000 tonnes of cargo was construction materials, and would have been blocked by the Israelis.) The ships should not surrender at the first challenge, but sail on towards Gaza and compel the Israelis to conduct hostile boarding operations against them.

The crews should not physically resist the Israeli troops, but some of them would probably be hurt.

Would some be killed? Possibly, though Israel will try to avoid another public relations disaster like last week’s. Might they end up serving jail sentences in Israel? Maybe, if Netanyahu’s government is in a particularly self-destructive mood.

Volunteers can easily be found for these aid missions, and so can the money to pay for them. Carry out one operation a week for the next couple of months, and the blockade would almost certainly crumble.

Netanyahu’s government would either change its policy or fall. Either outcome would be greeted with pleasure in almost every capital in the world, including Washington.

Owned by Breslau residents Nancy Dalgard and her husband Bob Rebelo, the business has operated out of four different locations in the village in its 12-year history. Having recently moved into a brandnew building all their own, Dalgard hopes they’ll be staying put for a while.

BRC Mechanical’s new location on the west side of Woolwich Street offers 3,350 square feet of space, more than three times the square footage of their old location.

A combined reception and showroom in the front showcases all the products they sell – fireplaces, water heaters, air conditioners, furnaces and geothermal units. In the back is a shop and storage area, and there’s a meeting room upstairs, used for staff training and public information sessions.

They started out doing a lot of subcontracting, installing furnaces and air conditioners.

Rebelo had all the required licences and Dalgard worked alongside him. It was two years before they hired their first employee and five before they felt they had their feet squarely under them.

“We both really love this industry so there’s nothing we’d rather do, but it was tough,” Dalgard said.

It was also difficult being a woman in a male-dominated industry, Dalgard said. More women are moving into the trades these days, but 12 years ago they were few and far between. That experience has proven valuable as she spends more time in the office handling orders, sales and organization, because she understands all aspects of the job.

“There’s nothing our guys have done that I haven’t done at some point.”

When plants talk, this scientist listens I

t’s a special time of the year. Tiny crop plants such as corn and soybeans are emerging in the field, creeping skyward to capture the sun’s warming rays.

And they’re screaming their little green heads off about their no-good, sun-sucking neighbours.

At least, that’s what University of Guelph plant scientist Prof. Clarence Swanton heard this spring when he put his ear to the ground and listened, so to speak, to plants’ response to their environment. A lot of the talk occurs between the plants, and a lot of the messages are the same: get lost!

By listening and watching, Swanton, a world-renowned expert in weed control in crops, has made some significant discoveries. For example, he’s found field crop plants don’t like crowds, even though they grow closely together in rows. He’s also found these plants abhor diversity, even though that’s what makes the botanical world go around.

In fact, they know exactly where another plant species has taken root, by the amount of shade it produces and the light it reflects.

If it’s too close, they sound the alarm.

Agronomically, cries for help appear as growth traits. Plants tell

For example, when crop plants sense nearby competitors (a.k.a. weeds), they muster all their energy and grow longer stems and stalks, to try to out-compete the unwelcomed neighbour. This is much like a houseplant’s desperate and often futile efforts in winter to grasp limited sunlight.

But in a very young plant, during what’s called the critical growth period (which lasts about a month) limited energy is available. Something has to give, and the plants actually change by the minute as they’re growing.

Unfortunately, what suffers is root development, as the crop plants focus their efforts on stalks and stems. That means farmers (or gardeners) end up with spindly, underperforming plants

They keep track of how their customers find them, and more than 80 per cent of their business comes through referrals.

They’re also seeing an increase in customer knowledge, particularly when it comes to geothermal. Geothermal clients have researched the technology for two years on average before they call BRC Mechanical, Dalgard said.

Two years ago, oil prices went up and stayed up for several months, only coming down with the onset of the recession. For many homeowners, that price climb was the final push they

needed to switch to geothermal heat.

BRC Mechanical started doing geothermal installations five years ago, but they already make up 30 to 40 per cent of the company’s business. The new building is heated with geothermal, and the unit is on display in the showroom, so people can see it at work.

The walls are decorated with photos of installations in progress, so potential customers are aware just what the process looks like.

BRC Mechanical moved into its new headquarters last December, but the busy winter months mean the finishing touches were put in place this week. The business is throwing open the doors of the new building for a community open house June 17 from 2 to 8 p.m.

anchored by shallow root systems that struggle to sustain the plants all season.

This is a fairly recent understanding, and it’s fundamentally changed the way farmers approach weed control. Traditionally, they thought they could wait until the weeds emerged, then nail them with what’s called a post-emergent (literally, “after they emerge”) herbicide.

Now, knowing plants’ high stress levels in the presence of weeds has prompted farmers to use more preemergent herbicides, to make sure the environment is what Swanton calls “clean” when plants start to grow. Pre-emergent herbicides are applied to the soil, and kill weeds before they get a chance to become competitors. It’s a crucial time to manage weeds, because yields lost during this time cannot be recovered. Delaying spraying by even a few days makes a huge difference in yield.

The down side is that farmers don’t always know what kind of weeds will emerge, or how thick the infestation

will be. They don’t want to spray for nothing.

But economically, research by Swanton and others has shown weeds can cut yield on just one corn plant by more than three bushels a day.

That’s a lot of money lost. Given that we pay farmers pennies for their crops, they can’t take the chance that their fields will be weedy, costing them money.

Swanton’s research into earlyseason weed control has received support from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and Syngenta.

They’re all curious about what his findings mean to science, to farmers and to the crop protection industry.

f you have sat in the pews of St. Teresa of Avila Church in Elmira, you may have heard about the spiritual GPS: the starting point of your trip is your birthplace, the destination is Heaven.

“How you get from one point to the next is up to you, and there are many voices telling you to go in one direction or another,” said Father Ray Reitzel, who is set to retire from his role at the church at the end of this month. “My view is ‘God’s Pathway Saves’… GPS.” Reitzel has been teaching the Catholic faith for more than 50 years. He left home to be a teacher at St. Jerome’s High School in Kitchener where he spent the next 16 years. Following that role, he travelled to North Bay to teach at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall for another 15 years. He retired from teaching in 1993 and returned to Kitchener to pursue his vocation in the church and became a Pastor at Blessed Sacrament in Burford, before transferring to St. Louis Parish in Waterloo and then finally to St. Teresa.

He sees his time with several different churches as a blessing, and a time where he has become part of a large family in his community; one of his favourite verses seems to sum up that sentiment. “‘As anyone who has left houses or family or career, for my sake, and for the sake of the Kingdom, will receive a hundred-fold in this life and an eternal reward in Heaven.’ That’s from Matthew 19:29,” he said. “An eternal reward in Heaven, well that’s the best stocks and bonds you can get, I think!”

changes to the way faith plays out as society grows and stretches and changes.

When he first began, he was speaking to the congregation in Latin. Around 1965, the ways of the church changed and masses were spoken in the vernacular language of the region.

“That was one of the major turning points for the church,” he explained.

“People were able to understand and relate to what was being said.”

Soon after that, however, attendance began dropping dramatically. This time it had nothing to do with the sermons at all, but distractions instead.

“As soon as TV became a household item, that’s when church attendance and vocations dropped sig-

nificantly,” he said. “Just before that time, the seminaries were so busy they were building new ones, but within 10 years they were white elephants – nobody was coming in anymore.”

He saw this phenomenon close to home, even in his own family. Reitzel is part of a large family: he was the ninth child of 12. Of that group, three of the boys became priests and two of the girls became nuns. Now, Reitzel has 52 nieces and nephews and not one of them has shown interest in pursuing a religious vocation.

“It’s a sad thing for me, that none of them have chosen this, but that’s part of what we teach about the faith,” he explained.

“Through baptism, we become one with Christ but anyone who lives their life according to what they honestly believe is true in their life is baptized by desire. It is their choice.”

Today, it seems to Reitzel that more and more people are distancing themselves from the church and he notes that only 20 per cent of families who attend St. Teresa Catholic School are regular visitors to the parish, something that he finds challenging in his role.

“It’s easy to teach people who are searching and who are willing to ask questions, but how you teach those people who just cover their ears to it? I just don’t know.”

He hopes that with his teaching, he may have been able to allow some people to explore their faith and ask questions of him.

“When you are in high school, Jesus is not cool in that stage of life,” he said. “But hopefully, I have planted a few seeds so that when they grow up they take root, and come back

ave you ever set a goal and not achieved it? Ever find yourself having the best of intentions, getting the best insights, being inspired to take action … yet nothing happens?

There’s an adage that goes, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.” My favorite is, “When the resistance to change is greater than the desire to change, nothing happens! However when the desire to change becomes greater than the resistance to change – change happens.”

While coaching clients to better health and wellbeing, I find that they need to see considerable change in their lives: a lot of shifting needs to take place, coupled with dedication and commitment to the process, in order for them to be successful. Making the decision to follow that path is the first step.

I was recently asked, “Barney, why are almost of your articles all about thinking, goal-setting, task management, getting your head right and other non-fitness-related topics? You’re a health and exercise professional, so shouldn’t you be writing about health and exercise?” I had to smile, responding with the following: in my experience, for long-term successful body shape transformation, weight loss, increased athletic performance or pain management, it’s essential to know why you’re doing what you’re doing. If all it took was to eat healthy and become more physically active, then we wouldn’t be plagued with the obesity challenges experienced by Canadians.

There’s always room for the bacon and eggs of pasta O

n a recent trip to Italy, Kirstie noticed one common theme in all of the great food we had the pleasure of eating: simplicity. Most dishes had no more than four or five ingredients, yet everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and almost always drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, which gave every dish a beautiful mouth-feel.

We had our fair share of pasta, simply prepared with quality ingredients, never swimming in the sauce. We stayed at a breathtaking little villa in the town of Marcialla, in a region that is famous for Tuscan olive oils and Chianti wines.

bacon-like pork product that is made for pasta carbonara. We couldn’t, of course, go two weeks without cooking for ourselves (I just can’t help it!) and after a long day of travel, this Carbonara, made with local fresh eggs and salty cured pork was pure comfort food.

No matter what the time of year, pasta is always in season, especially since it’s fast, easy and relatively inexpensive. I avoid using cream in this recipe so as to stay true to the traditional recipe. Sometimes I refer to this pasta as the ‘bacon and egg’ pasta – try it once and you’ll get cravings for it every now and then.

Pasta Carbonara

Serves 6

>>1 450g package of dried spaghetti (I use De Cecco brand) >>1/2 lb thick cut bacon from the market >>1/5 lb pancetta, diced >>Extra virgin olive oil, as needed

What Will You Create?

>>4 large very fresh eggs >>salt as needed >>½ tsp freshly ground black pepper >>1 cup grated pecorino cheese (or parmiggiano) Get a large pot of boiling water going, with about 2 tbsp of kosher salt; add pasta to boiling water, stir, and cook until al dente: take a noodle out of the pot, and eat it. It should have a nice bite to it; Meanwhile, in a large frying pan over mediumlow heat, begin to fry bacon and pancetta – if this doesn’t produce about 2 tbsp of fat, add a little olive oil; Whisk eggs well with a pinch of salt and the black pepper; When pasta is done, remove from boiling water with tongs or a pasta spoon and place immediately in frying pan with the bacon; Turn off the heat of the frying pan, and then add eggs, all at once and stir really well until all of the eggs are incorporated. The heat of the pasta cooks the eggs; Serve immediately, drizzled with more extra virgin olive oil and sprinkled with cheese. Yum.

to the church. Many come back to the faith around the time of their marriage or the birth of a child and we are always glad to see them.”

And upon his approaching departure date, it is the people of his congregation that he will miss most.

“People whom I have met in Elmira are so welcoming,” he said.

“They are very happy, always smiling, they are good people.”

But now his GPS is taking him down the road to the priests’ residence at St. Jerome’s in Waterloo. He plans to spend some time pursuing his hobbies: swimming (he does 60 lengths in 60 minutes each week), cross-country skiing and walking for half an hour each day – his time to think and pray.

Paddling their way to better health Dragon boat racing a positive outlet for breast cancer survivors Joni Miltenburg

B

reast cancer is a disease that affects women of all ages all around the world – a fact that is brought home at events like the International Dragon Boat Festival, being held in Peterborough this weekend. More than 70 teams from around the world, made up of breast cancer survivors and their supporters, will dip their paddles in Peterborough’s Little Lake.

“It’s confronting to realize all these women had breast cancer, but it’s also great that all these women are survivors and enjoying life,” said Robyn Glen of Tasmania.

A handful of survivors from Tasmania have joined forces with Guelphbased Breastrokes, making their entry a true international effort.

In 2007, Breastrokes took part in an international event in Australia. Not all of them were able to go, so they joined up with a Tasmanian team – “Nipples on Ripples” – that was also

short paddlers. Now, with the event being held in Canada, the Tasmanians decided it was time to visit some old friends and race together again.

The EDSS girls’ slo-pitch season ended on a disappointing note last week, as they exited the championship tournament in the first round.

The Lancers finished first in their pool with a 7-1 record in the regular season, and were 9-2 overall. In tournament round robin, they lost to Resurrection Catholic Secondary School before beating Grand River and Preston Heights. That first loss meant they didn’t advance to the second round.

The girls had been anticipating a championship rematch with St. Mary’s High School.

Elmira has lost to St. Mary’s in the final game the past two seasons. After going undefeated through the season and the tournament, the Kitchener school now has an 82-game undefeated streak, stretching back to June 2006.

he Woolwich Girls Minor Hockey Association is introducing a new program to attract the youngest players to the sport.

The Wild Rookie program is for girls aged four to six who want to give hockey a try. The program will focus on skating and basic hockey skills, with some exhibition games against other local league teams in the second half of the year.

Woolwich has mini and tyke programs for

boys under novice age, but there was no corresponding program for girls. Jacinta Faries, local league director for the WGMHA, said some girls joined the boys’ mini program but for others it could be a bit intimidating. The girls also tend to be more social when it comes to sports, which doesn’t happen if there is only one or two of them in the dressing room.

“It was a gap we had that needed to be addressed,” she said.

June’s a time for outdoorsmen to pick their poison W

ith June fully in bloom, I start to get confused and indecisive – more so than usual, I mean. Do I fish for trout, walleye, muskie, pike, bass or panfish? Or do I chase crows, hunt groundhogs, hone my shooting skills on the firing line or spend time flinging arrows at our archery club’s 3-D range? These are the awful choices an outdoorsman with limited leisure time is forced to make.

In a perfect world, we’d all have an understanding spouse and enough time and money to participate in each of these activities. But needless to say, this is not a perfect world – as evidenced by the fact that buxom swimsuit models are, as a rule, not attracted to short, balding middle-aged men.

doors activities that have become legendary mostly because of the stories perpetuated by the participants, rather than the actual action it entails. As a rule this sport is slower and more painful than a government inquiry.

I know at least one diehard muskie angler who goes from year to year without even boating a fish.

Instead, he tells magnificent stories about the fish or two that actually followed his lure to the boat.

This is actually what makes muskie fishermen so brilliant.

They have somehow convinced the rest of us that a curious fish following your lure equates to success. It doesn’t even need to strike.

Only unsophisticated people like wives and kids don’t understand how awesome this is.

A real muskie fisherman can take a muskie follow and write a book about it. They’ll discuss the menacing shadow rising from the murky depths, the dramatic pause before it descended again, and the brilliant strategy that led to the dramatic event.

This doesn’t work for panfish, by the way. I’ve tried it.

For me, these lowered expectations are one of the main attractions of the sport. No one, except those totally new to the sport, actually expects a muskie to bite!

Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve galea Needless to say, this pains me. I mean, if buxom swimsuit models were attracted to short, balding middle-aged men, what to do in June wouldn’t even be an issue for me.

But, sadly, it is an issue. You can’t do it all, so, at least for this year, I have decided to abandon all thoughts of fishing for muskie. It’s tragic, I know.

Yet it makes sense too. Muskie fishing after all is one of those out-

If you ask me, I believe muskie fishermen are secretly happy about this. Let’s face it, if the fish actually bit, you’d be forced to deal with a thrashing, slimy behemoth and its big mouth. Fishing partner aside, however – the muskie would need attending to as well. And they can be mean.

Even so, giving up muskie fishing was not an easy decision for me to make. After all, I have virtually no muskie lures or rods at this point in time and now have no excuse to buy them either. That’s a shame.

On the bright side, not spending hundreds of hours hoping to tempt a muskie to follow my lure frees me up for many other things – like life.

I’ll be able to shoot and fish for other species and generally enjoy the month of June. Tomorrow, in fact, we’re going to chase rainbow trout and once the last Saturday of the month comes around it’s smallmouth bass from there on in.

Still, somewhere in the middle of it all, I’ll get the urge to fish for muskie – even though I’ve only done this a few times and found it kind of boring.

Don’t get me wrong; we had some success. I remember this one fish that followed my lure right to the boat …

Program: Building from a young age > CONTINUED FROM PG. 22 Their goal is to get enough girls signed up to make one rookie team this year. The registration fee for the new program is set at $180, significantly less than other minor hockey programs. Faries explained that they’re trying to make it affordable for families to try out the sport. They’re also looking for sponsors to help offset the cost.

The association is also

trying to recruit girls aged seven to 10 who want to start playing hockey. It isn’t necessary to have taken part in a learn-to-skate or mini program, Faries said; at the novice and atom levels, the girls will learn on the ice with the help of their coaches.

“The first day they’re holding onto the boards and they can’t really skate and within a month they’re skating around the ice,” Faries said. “At those ages, it’s

really easy to start brand new to the sport.”

The WGMHA will also waive the late registration fee for those registering to play Woolwich girls’ hockey for the first time. They would like to have registration forms returned by the end of June – allotment of ice time starts in July – but will accept registration forms up to September.

Dragon boat paddling not only helped her regain her strength, it connected her with a group of women who had gone through the same

diagnosis that she had.

They’re a support group, but one that doesn’t dwell overmuch on histories; they tend toward hysterical, rather than historical, Dunsmore said, explaining they’ve learned to laugh at themselves.

Dunsmore’s teammate Beverly Nelson agrees.

“The camaraderie, I think, is the best part of it,” Nelson said.

Nelson joined the team in 2001, six

weeks after her last radiation treatment. She learned about dragon boat racing from her doctors, something that was unheard-of just 10 years earlier. Up until the mid-90s, doctors believed that repetitive arm movements might cause lymphedema, a swelling of the arm that occurs in 25 per cent of breast cancer patients.

Women were discouraged from playing tennis, golfing, even gardening and knitting.

That myth was challenged

by Don McKenzie, a sports medicine physician at the University of British Columbia. In 1996, he persuaded a group of breast cancer survivors to take up dragon boat racing, one of the most demanding upper body

exercises around. Two years later, he published “Abreast in a Boat – a race against breast cancer,” with his findings: not only did regular exercise not lead to lymphedema, but it helped the survivors’ overall health.

Since then, breast cancer survivors around the world have taken up dragon boat racing. Although it has become associated with breast cancer survivors, the sport also helps women realize the disease doesn’t define them, Dunsmore said.

“It’s a healing, healthy way to deal with a dreadful diagnosis.”

Stratford returns to theatricality World-famous Stratford Shakespeare Festival unveils a series of openings to begin its 59th season Steve Kannon

icturesque Stratford has undoubtedly enjoyed an influx of visitors brought in by the early arrival of spring, but the tourist season shifted into high gear this week as the Stratford Shakespeare Festival officially launched its 59th season.

The kickoff was Monday night’s gala opening of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, directed by the festival’s artistic director, Des McAnuff.

With that, the festival’s 2010 season runs until Oct. 31, featuring As You Like It; Kiss Me, Kate; The Tempest; Dangerous Liaisons; Evita; Peter Pan; The Winter’s Tale; Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris; For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again; Do Not Go Gentle; The Two Gentlemen of Verona; and King of Thieves.

This week’s openings saw productions get underway at three of the festival’s four stages.

“This is one of the most exciting offerings we’ve had in a long time – there’s something for everyone,” said Ann Swerdfager, the festival’s publicity director.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with what we’ve produced for 2010,” said McAnuff in a statement.

“We have an unbelievably gifted company of actors who never cease to inspire and amaze me. All of these talents combine with the work of our outstanding artisans to create a theatre-

The opening play, As You Like It, features Ben Carlson as Touchstone, Brent Carver as Jaques, Paul Nolan as Orlando and Andrea Runge as Rosalind.

Shakespeare included a fair amount of music in this play. While the original score is long gone, Stratford commissioned Justin Ellington, cousin of the legendary Duke Ellington, to write a 1920s-style jazz score for its production, Swerdfager noted.

Tuesday at the Festival Theatre. Directed by John Doyle, the Tony Award-winning director of Sweeny Todd, the production features Juan Chioran and Monique Lund.

“It’s a highly entertaining show. It’s just a lovely, sweet tale that leaves everybody smiling,” she said, adding it’s one of her personal favourites, having already seen it four times.

On Wednesday, theatergoers moved to the Tom Patterson Theatre for the late Shakespearean romance The Winter’s Tale. Directed by Marti Maraden, the production features a cast led by Ben Carlson as Le-

ontes, Yanna McIntosh as Hermione and Seana McKenna as Paulina.

The following day marked the opening of the festival’s first rock musical, Evita, at the Avon Theatre. Featuring Chilina Kennedy in the title role, the production is directed by Gary Griffin – together again after the success of West Side Story in 2009. Kennedy is joined by Juan Chioran, who plays Juan Perón, and Josh Young, who plays Che. The Studio Theatre season will begin on July 13 with the opening of Do Not Go Gentle, featuring Geraint Wyn Davies.

The mix of offerings should help boost ticket sales, which topped 500,000 last year. The festival brings some $150 million in economic activity to the area, a major component in the tourism industry.

What were some bottlenose dolphins spotted doing recently off the coast of Australia, moving them into our own celebrated category right along with chimpanzees, sea otters, woodpecker finches?

The dolphins were sporting cone-shaped sea sponges on their beaks, the first clear case of tool use by wild dolphins or whales, says Bruce Bower in “Science News.”

These “brainiacs of the marine world” will dive to the bottom of deep channels and poke their sponge-enhanced beaks into the sandy ocean floor to flush out small fish, devoting some 17 per cent of their time “fishing”--more tool-time than any non-human animal, says
