oth public high schools in Waterloo Region’s rural townships slipped slightly in rankings compiled by a national think tank, but still remain in the upper echelons.

Elmira District Secondary School was 70th of 722 secondary schools, tied with 11 other schools throughout the province. Waterloo-Oxford in Baden was a few levels down, ranked 184 along with 27 other schools.

In the past five years, the two schools had been ranked 22nd and 87th respectively. But Mary Lou Mackie, executive superintendent of education for the Region of Waterloo District School Board, dismissed the entire

Encroachment at Conestogo Park formalized with land owner Steve Kannon

onestogo Park has been short-changed for more than 40 years, but Woolwich is in no hurry to reclaim the land. In fact, the township has now formalized the arrangement.

In preparing to sell the house at 41 Evening Star Lane, the executors of the estate discovered the home’s garage encroached on township property by some 11 feet, and had been doing so for more than four decades. That’s about as long as the park’s been there.

In order to get a clear title, the executors first tried to buy the strip of land, but were unable to negotiate a price with the township, director of recreation and facilities Larry Devitt told councillors meeting

That the encroachment dated back so many decades to the time of the park’s creation makes it something of an anomaly, Devitt stressed. Councillors agreed, voting in favour of the new agreement.

In other business related to the park, councillors approved the necessary road closures to allow for the annual Victoria Day fireworks display in Conestogo.

The display, set to go May 24, will require the usual closure of Elgin Street West, Evening Star Lane and Feodore Street. Activities will run from 5 to 11:30 p.m.

Past concerns about fire safety have been addressed without the need to move the event. An agreement with the ConestogoWinterbourne Optimist Club means the types of fireworks used will provide the necessary setbacks from surrounding buildings and spectators, Woolwich fire chief Rick Pedersen said.

he four candidates were colleagues in the EDSS leadership class, but only two would emerge to take the helm of the school council next year. Putting what they learned in the classroom into practice, Grade 11 students Lydia Frey and Brandon Seip will be the 2010/2011 co-presidents.

More than 450 students cast their ballots last week at Elmira District Secondary School.

The pair will be following in the footsteps of this year’s co-presidents, Caelen Rank and James Toronchuk.

Along with Frey and Seip, the race included Jon Milanovich and Danielle Thomas, all of whom spent much of last week wearing campaign T-shirts, making promotional videos and talking to students about what would make them the best choice.

Following the vote, all four candidates were called down to the school’s main office May 7 and given the news.

The co-presidents elect now face a variety of tasks.

“Something we want to focus on this year is school spirit,” said Seip. “We think it’s important for people to be excited about their school, to be proud of it.”

Both students were members of their student councils in Grade 8, and are now very involved in sports at the high school level; Seip plays on the football, basketball and rugby teams, while Frey is a member of the basketball, volleyball and track and field teams.

“Athletics is something that a lot of people can get into,” explained Frey. “Our school is pretty enthusiastic about our sports teams.”

Among other ideas that the pair have been brainstorming for the next school year, Seip has an interest in rejuvenating the fitness intramurals program, in which students are part of a league where they are able to play a different sport each week.

Their jobs start in September and both students say they’re not anxious about what is to come in the following months.

“I was a bit nervous doing the speech, talking in front of the whole school,” explained Seip, “but I think that is something that will get easier with time.”

Women are slowly moving into the skilled trades, but they still make up less than 10 per cent of registered apprentices in Canada. The young women’s conferences being held in conjunction with the Ontario Technological Skills competition at

RIM Park next week aim to boost that number.

The conference includes guest speakers and time to network with women working in a wide range of sectors, from bricklaying to gem setting, aerospace technology, IT, steam fitting and nuclear power.

“A lot of young women may not have opportunities to speak with other women that are currently in the

trades, so we hope they’ll take away the stories and positive reinforcement that there are vibrant career options in the trades,” said Carolyn Hartlen, public relations director for Skills Canada Ontario.

Hartlen pointed out that the skilled trades offer good wages and stability for women, and said they’ve had positive feedback from both educators and the young

women themselves after previous networking events.

“This is an event that creates a change in their decision. It reaffirms that what they were considering for post secondary education is the path they want to take.”

The conferences, being held at Bingemans in Kitchener, will also include a tour of the skills competition.

> A new lease for old VIC The “yellow house” in St. Jacobs will be the face of tourism services in Woolwich again in 2010, as council this week agreed to another one-year lease on the building, home to the visitor information centre.

The St. Jacobs VIC was opened on a trial basis in 2005 and expanded in 2006. The new deal with Mercedes Corp continues the dollar-a-year arrangement for the refurbished farm home at 844 Weber St. N. adjacent to the farmers’ market. The VIC is open seven days a week from mid-May to mid-October, but staffed only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends.

> Robin to return to the hood The township will work with Robin in the Hood Festival organizers to ease traffic concerns during the event, but aren’t prepared to close First Street adjacent to Gibson Park in Elmira.

Councillors meeting Monday night approved several measures clearing the way for the annual event to run June 3-5, but said they’d rather see better management of buses dropping off and picking up kids rather than closing the street. First Street is a major thoroughfare, and will be extra busy at that time due to the closure of the intersection at Church Street and Snyder Avenue.

Woolwich’s goal of drafting an economic development plan got a $75,000 boost this week from the federal government.

The grant application, filed in January, was praised by an assistant to Kitchener-Conestoga MP Harold Albrecht, on hand at Monday night’s council meeting to congratulate the township for its successful bid.

“Your proposal was very easy for Harold to support. We referred to it as Woolwich's economic action plan,” said David Drewe, playing on the federal action plan slogan.

the roadway and into the Forwell’s Variety parking lot on Lobsinger Line in Heidelberg before entering into a physical fight following a fit of road rage. One driver allegedly cut the other driver off by accident, causing an argument to start between the two. Upon entering the parking lot, the complainant, a 19-year-old Elmira man, was punched in the face by a 49-year-old Milverton man. The older man was charged with assault.

DSS teacher Phil Sauder was one of three teachers honoured last week at the annual Stewart Awards for Teaching Excellence, singled out for excellence and dedication to their work.

“The Stewart Awards are a tremendous honour, recognized across the school board by teachers, administrators and staff so to be nominated and then to win is an incredible achievement,” said Dave Mitchell, chair of the Stewart Awards Trustee Committee.

Sauder was the recipient of the Grant R. MacDonald Award, established in 2004 to honour an outstanding teacher in the local secondary school community. It was named to recognize the long-time commitment to secondary school education of

Grant R. MacDonald, a minister at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in downtown Kitchener, where the awards were handed out.

Sauder co-ordinates the Elmira Life and Work School program, in which rural Mennonite students are encouraged to stay in high school.

“At ELAWS, we strive to create opportunities for students, but at the same time stay true to their values and traditions,” explained Sauder.

The school was started within Elmira District Secondary School in hopes of getting a high school education for these students, many of whom were traditionally removed from school by their parents in order to work on the farm or on the family business. The program has grown from a handful of students to 120, “thanks to

While noting that it was his name on the plaque at the awards ceremony, there were a number of other people who should have received credit for the project as well, Sauder stressed.

Rankings: School board insists there's more to schools than simple numbers > CONTINUED FROM COVER school performance studies, said in the report released this week.

The report card also compared the school’s performance with the performance expected based on parental average income, drawn from Statistics Canada’s most recent census data. With an average family income of $78,700 Waterloo-Oxford performed better

than expected, while EDSS didn’t do as well as expected based on an average family income of $182,900.

On average, schools with higher parental income had a higher overall rating. However, the report’s authors acknowledge that less than 25 per cent of variation among schools is associated with the level of income.

In tandem with the report card, the institute’s website allows

users to compare the performance of 722 English and French, public, and Catholic secondary schools from across Ontario based on eight key indicators derived from province-wide tests of literacy and mathematics skills administered by the province’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

This year’s results indicate that, province-wide, fewer stu-

dents tested below the provincial average on reading and numeracy skills than in 2008.

In 2009, 28.3 per cent of tests written were below the provincial standard, compared to 29.6 per cent in 2008.

“This is a notable achievement, and one that should encourage all teachers and administrators.

For schools that didn’t see an improvement in students’ test scores, educators should be

Mackie, however, said that although she is certainly a proponent of having some measurement of student achievement, she believes the scope of the Fraser Institute’s measurement is far too narrow.

Elmira Cubs prepare for take-off

More than 1,800 competitors from across the province will be competing in more than 60 trade and technology areas from aircraft maintenance to video production.

Students have to complete practical challenges designed to test the skills required in their chosen trade and technology fields. Some $5 million worth of tools, equipment and supplies are provided by sponsoring organizations for the competition.

Hartlen noted that the

competition has been expanding every year, having grown from 1,600 participants last year.

O

ntarians, already in no mood to embrace the new harmonized sales tax, will be even more incensed to learn prices at the LCBO won’t be dropping. Instead, they’ll be climbing.

Although the eight per cent rate will replace a 12 per cent tax, the liquor store claims lowering prices would be irresponsible – apparently we’d all become heavy drinkers due to the nickels and dimes we’d be saving. There’s also a price increase on the way, essentially boosting the LCBO’s profit margins.

That move would be contrary to Premier Dalton McGuinty’s sales pitch: savings enjoyed by businesses will be passed on to consumers. Since the government owns the LCBO, this would be a good opportunity to order the agency to do something that benefits the public.

Don’t hold your breath. The tax and all its downsides are here to stay.

The permanent nature of the tax is embedded in the agreement between Ontario and the federal government: the HST must remain in place through 2015, five years after its introduction next July. As well, the tax rate of 13 per cent is fixed until at least 2012.

Support for the tax is predicated on the savings that will come from efficiencies, as businesses will see taxes drop and will face a more streamlined tax reporting and remittance process.

There are advantages to that. But consumers certainly shouldn’t expect to see those savings passed on to us: The same promise was made when the GST replaced the manufacturers’ sales tax, but prices only went up.

Everything is going to cost more, including eight-per-cent jumps in such previously exempt essentials such as home heating and gasoline.

That reality is solidified by the pro-HST work of a group calling itself the Smart Taxation Alliance, which includes the likes of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, groups whose policies and goals are typically contrary to the interests and wellbeing of average Ontarians.

Harmonizing the sales taxes would be the latest in a string of changes to remove taxes from businesses and place them on individuals. That was the real reason behind the GST, ongoing adjustments to property tax rates, free trade and the trickle-down rationale behind cuts to corporate tax rates, to name a few.

prices, benefits that rarely surface.

Critics, on the other hand, have documented these tactics as no more than a race to the bottom, allowing corporations to flit over borders easily and to work the system to minimize already shrinking tax levies.

Not surprisingly, there is no talk of making this change revenue-neutral – both the province and the feds will rake in more money. If McGuinty wants to make the change, he can start by reducing the PST rate to ensure the government collects no more in sales taxes than it does today. Or adjust income taxes to offset the extra costs we’ll all be paying. In either instance, a reduction in government spending is in order, starting with administrative layoffs.

All of this is wishful thinking, as increased taxes are needed to pay for the deficit, and governments lack the backbone to make necessary cuts.

A British marriage of convenience T

here has not been a coalition government in Britain since the Second World War, but it may have to get used to them. The election on May 6 left both major parties, the Conservatives and Labour, short of a majority, and put history’s also-rans, the Liberal Democratic Party, in the position of king-maker. It has used that position very cleverly, and Britain may be heading for a major constitutional change.

Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democratic leader, used the five days of hectic negotiations after the election to extract a high price from the Conservative Party for agreeing to enter a coalition with them. Policy differences on taxes or educational policy could be finessed fairly easily, but Clegg’s bottom line was electoral reform. That used to be a Conservative red line – but in the end they crossed it.

Electoral reform? Who cares about that except a few policy wonks? Well, no: the Liberal Democrats care passionately about it. It’s the only way that they can ever fight their way back into the centre ring of politics.

The Lib Dems’ political ancestors are the Liberals and, before them, the Whigs. For more than two centuries that lineage provided one of the two great parties that alternated in power in Britain. Then in the 1920s, with the rise of the Labour Party, the Liberals came third in one election – and never found their way back to power.

The winner-take-all British electoral system (“first-past-the-post”) is cruelly unfair to third parties. In the election just past, the Lib Dems got almost a quarter of the votes – but less than a tenth of the seats in parliament. So many people

It was a vicious circle, so for many decades now the most urgent tactical goal of the Libs Dems has been to change the voting system: alternative vote, “alternative vote plus,” proportional representation – anything that gave them a fair chance of winning.

The two “major” parties, the beneficiaries of the existing system, naturally resisted any change in the electoral rules. The only way it could ever happen is if both of them had to beg for the support of the Lib Dems. Like now.

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg would have preferred a coalition with Labour, since most Lib Dem voters are more or less on the left. But he rightly said that he had to talk to the Conservatives first, since they had ended up with more seats than Labour after the election on last week – and he also knew that Labour would be an even less trustworthy partner in power than the Conservatives.

Former prime minister Gordon Brown tried hard to make a deal with the Lib Dems that would keep the Labour Party in power, but his party, aware of the savage cuts that any incoming government would have to make to deal with a runaway budget deficit, didn’t agree. Many of them thought that this was a good election to lose – so Brown’s prospective coalition partners, the Liberal Democrats, could not trust Labour to keep any

deal he made.

A senior Liberal Democrat, discussing the parallel negotiations that the Lib Dems conducted with Labour, explained that though the talks were amicable, “problems remain on deliverability and Labour cohesion.” In other words, some Labour members of parliament would rebel against the deal, probably sooner rather than later – and since a Lib-Lab coalition would have the slimmest of majorities, just a few rebels could bring the coalition down.

Prime Minister David Cameron, on the other hand, may come to rue the day when he agreed to the terms of the deal that finally put him in office.

Cameron was not well liked by large sectors of the Conservative Party that he leads even before the election: he was a “modernizer,” and Conservatives are conservative. But he is more actively disliked now, because many senior members of the party (and probably most of the rank and file) blame him for failing to pull off a clear win against a Labour Party that was exhausted and partly discredited after 13 years in power.

They thought they were cruising smoothly to victory, and they wound up 20 seats short of a majority. They accepted the extortionate concessions that the Liberal Democrats demanded for a coalition because after 13 years in the wilderness they were positively panting with eagerness to be in government again. But when the going gets rough, they will blame Cameron for those concessions too.

Paying for e-waste, but not seeing the benefit

I

f you’ve bought an electronic gadget in the last year, chances are the price you paid included a fee that’s supposed to help pay for recycling the item when you opt to chuck it.

Trouble is, the organization behind the tax is doing more collecting than recycling just now.

The Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES), a non-profit company formed by technology manufacturers, importers and retailers, began charging disposal fees last spring, taking in some $40 million since then. Created in response to Ontario’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Program Plan, the OES was supposed to set up hundreds of free drop-off locations in the country, diverting 42,000 metric tonnes of e-waste from landfills.

Only about a third of that target was met in its first year, drawing the attention of Environment Minister John Gerretsen.

There are far fewer drop-off spots than envisioned, but numbers are increasing. In Waterloo Region, there are 15 spots listed, including retailers such as Staples and Future Shop. None of the locations is in the townships, however.

It’s too early to tell if the OES initiative is having an impact on the stream of e-waste handled by the region, which isn’t part of the program. The 144 tonnes collected in 2009 was down from 210 tonnes the previous year, but is in line with annual averages, says Jim Archibald,

lack of drop-off spots for electronics, and the lack of public awareness, means the region won’t be getting out of the business any time soon.

“The big problem with the program is that you can’t drop off [items] … at convenient places.

There just aren’t the locations for people to drop them off.”

For now, e-waste efforts only divert a minor percentage of the massive amounts of garbage we generate. The 150 tonnes pales in comparison to the 200,000 to 250,000 tonnes of waste processed at regional landfill sites each year, but the diversion program avoids adding some toxins to the mix, Archibald explains. That list includes lead, mercury, cadmium and beryllium.

As well, it just makes sense to recycle many of the products found in consumer electronics. A number of valuable metals, such as gold, copper, steel, aluminum, lead and other substances, can now be recovered and then recycled and reused in the manufacturing of other products.

Such recycling is much less energyintensive and less detrimental to the environment and health compared to landfilling and incineration, and recycling reduces the need for primary electronics production processes that tend to employ toxic substances.

For instance, the recycling of aluminum achieves a 79-per-cent material conservation, a 95-per-cent energy saving, a 97-per-cent reduc-

Fees charged – $10 for a monitor or computer, for instance – essentially cover its expenses. The region pays about $0.40 per pound to the company that processes its e-waste, which translated into $130,000 last year; $150,000 if you factor in trucking and staff time. That rate is a little higher than it could be because the goal was to have a reputable contractor – in this case, Sims Recycling Solutions’ Brampton plant – that documents what they do with the components taken from the waste materials, says Archibald.

The region still collects a fair bit of e-waste, but would be more than happy to get out of the business if the OES plan actually works.

“We provided the system because we didn’t want them going into our landfill,” he says of the region’s efforts. “If the stewardship program takes off … there’s really no reason for us to be involved at the landfill site.”

We stand to lose more than we gain from gravel pit To the Editor,  I recently received a letter from the IBI Group, consultant to Hunder Developments Ltd., responding to my many objections to the proposed Hunsberger gravel pit.

One of my objections related to the wear and tear on our township roads that will be caused by the additional 47,736 truck trips that will occur each year (using IBI’s numbers of 221 operating days multiplied by 18 truck trips per hour during a 12-hour workday). This will be the case over the next nine years (minimum) to 20 years (likely minimum expressed by IBI at the May 4 public meeting) that the pit will operate.

Their factual, yet rather dismissive response was that the upper-tier

government, the Region of Waterloo, will be given $0.015 per tonne for aggregate extracted at the pit, while the lower-tier government, Woolwich Township, will get $0.06 per tonne.

Since the Hunsberger pit has a potential reserve of upwards of 4.2 million tonnes, the resulting contribution amounts to $64,275 and $257,000 respectively over the life of the pit.

I ask the township this question: Are you willing to sell the soul of our Conestogo and Winterbourne communities, the safety of our pedestrians and children and the security of our roads for this paltry sum? I should hope not.

As one of the 290 written objectors to the Hunsberger pit application, I would be happy to compensate the township $44.31 each year for the next

20 years to offset the revenue lost by rejecting the Hunder zone change application. Let’s do the right thing for our township communities.

tion of effluents, and a 95-per-cent reduction in emissions over primary resource extraction. Steel recycling brings a 90-per-cent materials savings, 86-per-cent reduction in emissions, and a 76-per-cent reduction in water pollution.

We’re not diverting as much as we should, but there are positive signs.

Improvements are needed, because we’re generating ever-increasing amounts of e-waste, the result of poor-quality goods failing more quickly and our unquenchable thirst for the latest and greatest. OES estimates that 78 per cent of households in the province have at least one electronic product that is not working or not being used. By discarding those items properly, we would help the organization reach its goal of recycling 46,000 tonnes of e-waste. By the time it reaches its fifth year, OES wants to hit 85,000 tonnes.

Those numbers would help justify the extra costs we’ve been paying since last April. Only $0.40 on computer peripherals such as keyboards and mice, the fee jumps to $12.25 for each computer monitor sold, for instance. Larger items such as bigscreen TVs cost an additional $26.

We’re not getting value for that money. And when waste ends up in landfills or in overseas sweatshops, the environmental benefits of the OES program disappear. At that point, we’re getting fleeced and getting no absolution from the collective guilt arising from so much waste.

Dyer: Looking for a coalition gov`t

The Conservative-Liberal Democratic coalition, on the other hand, has a big enough majority in parliament that it cannot be brought down by just a few rebels from either party. It could actually last four years, which would be long enough to change the voting system (if the voters agree, and current opinion polls suggest that they would).

That is the Lib Dem strategy. If it succeeds, coalition governments will become the norm in Britain.

ohn D’Hondt likens reiki to playing a stringed instrument: plucking one string causes the other strings to vibrate with it.

A reiki practitioner, he explains, channels energy to trouble spots to help the body correct energy imbalances and boost self-healing. how to heal themselves and others. Level two focuses on learning the Japanese healing symbols and sending reiki energy from a distance. After completing the third level, the student becomes a master and is able to teach reiki to others.

A room in the basement is designated the “reiki room” – his son made the sign above the door – and is outfitted with a massage table and low lighting. Quiet music helps to set a calming, relaxing mood.

D’Hondt hopes to complete his reiki master level this year.

He has also trained in therapeutic touch, taken an introductory course on acupressure and plans to take a full hypnosis course in the fall, to add regression therapy to the ser-

vices he offers.

Practitioners use reiki to treat problems like stress, headaches and certain types of pain. D’Hondt emphasizes that reiki is not meant to be a substitute for medical care, and works well in conjunction with other treatments.

He acknowledges that reactions to reiki are mixed. Some people are enthusiastic or curious, while others are skeptical or even afraid of the concept. That makes education a necessary part of his business.

He also offers a discounted rate on the first two sessions for people who want to give it a try.

“It’s actually a very simple method of healing,” he said.

“My goal is to help people – help them be more comfortable, less stressed.”

Last winter D’Hondt left behind a 17-year career in design and engineering when it became too stressful. Reiki had been a sideline for about a year, and he decided to try making a business of it.

“I thought maybe I should try this out and see where it goes,” he said.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. It’s based on the belief that unseen life-force energy flows through the body and can be directed by a reiki practitioner through a series of hand positions.

After doing some reading he hunted out places to learn reiki and discovered there are a number of teachers in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Guelph area. Each level requires classes that take place over a day or few days, with extra practice time after class.

orses are right at home around here, and they’re becoming more important all the time to the rest of Ontario, too. The province’s 350,000 horses and 80,000 horse owners help anchor Ontario’s farm economy, and offer some stability when other parts of the livestock sector are having their ups and downs.

About half of all the horses in Ontario reside on farms and acreages within 150 kilometres or so of Guelph.

It’s become a world-renown horse hub, a centre for all things equine. That’s thanks in part to expertise at the Ontario Veterinary College and at Equine Guelph, an organization dedicated to research, education and training, performance, healthcare and industry development.

An ambitious plan is being discussed to consider turning Guelph’s 640-acre Arkell Research Station into a permanent equine education and

Food For Thought Owen Roberts research centre that would rival anything, anywhere, including the great horse parks of Kentucky. This initiative would reflect the importance of the equine sector to Ontario, and the economic impact could be tremendous.

Early next month, all eyes in the equine community will fall on the Arkell site when a new four-day tradeshow called Canada’s Outdoor Equine Expo gets underway there.

It’s being staged by Guelph-based Canada’s Outdoor Shows Ltd., in partnership with the Arkell station and Equine Guelph, along with sup-

port from the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, the Ontario Equestrian Federation and Equine Canada.

And even though this is its first year, the expo already has a good pedigree.

Canada’s Outdoor Shows Ltd. also runs the successful Outdoor Farm Show in Woodstock at the agricultural research station there, and will soon be applying the outdoor farm show template to a western Canada event as well.

The Arkell expo, dedicated to innovations in horse management, is open to the public. There’ll be about 30 horses there, along with celebrity riders, other personalities from the sector, Equine Guelph’s popular EquiMania interactive activity for kids and exhibits. The emphasis is on thoroughbreds, standardbreds and quarter horses.

It’s not a horse show in the classic sense; rather, says show president Lorie Jocius, visitors will experience first-hand equine research translated into practical applications through hands-on demonstrations and clinics.

“It makes sense to locate this show at Arkell in close proximity to the equine owners, researchers, veterinarians, trainers and coaches in the area,” says Jocius. “These are all very

busy professionals, and to best serve them, we want to be in their backyard.”

Gayle Ecker, director of Equine Guelph, calls the show a way to demonstrate how research can benefit everyone from racehorse trainers to pony clubs. And that’s a fantastic idea. Closing the loop on research at all levels is essential, and everyone is searching for ways to get news out and feedback in return. Trade shows are an accepted and established way of communicating. In an age when virtual and electronic initiatives are all the rage, there’s still no substitute for the sights, sounds, smells and feel – the buzz – of a live event with real animals.

That said, electronic communication is good way to find out more about the expo. It has a website, a Facebook page, and it’s being talked about by all kinds of equine sites, including the influential Barnmice equine blog.

I‘m glad to see this show advance.

The Arkell site is a gem, and the initiative itself underlines how agriculture is changing. Nothing brings rural and urban interests together in a calm, upbeat way like horses. And for agriculture to thrive, these interests have to get along.

Encore student named to Canadian dance team 15-year-old Adrian Eitzen will be part of group competing at world championships next fall Katie Edmonds

I

n November, tap dancer Adrian Eitzen will lace up his tap dancing shoes and take to the stage, but instead of dancing for his instructors at Elmira’s Encore Dance Studio, he will be tapping in front of an international audience at the World Dance Championships.

Auditions for the Canadian National Dance Team attracted some of the best dancers from across Canada on Easter Monday, with more than 300 participants competing for positions on the team to represent Canada at the world level.

After an audition that lasted for more than three hours, Adrian was one of 24 dancers chosen to form the Canadian dance team.

In the fall, he and his teammates will travel to Germany to compete as a group, an undertaking which Eitzen finds to be more challenging than performing alone.

“Getting everyone to be doing the same step at the same time can be difficult,” he explained. “I am sure that we will be able to do it, but it will be tough.”

Eitzen has danced under the direction of Deanna Clatworthy at Encore Dance Studios in Elmira for the past 10 years, put-

ting on his dancing shoes for the first time when he was only four years old.

He has two older sisters, both of whom have had extensive dance training.

One is working in Toronto as a dance and drama teacher for young children, and both auditioned last year for the TV show ‘So You Think You Can Dance Canada.’ Before trying it

I used to go and watch them at the studio, and after a while I thought ‘this is something I could try.’

Adrian Eitzen for himself, Eitzen travelled back and forth to drop off and pick up his sisters at their practices when he was young.

The dancer, who lives in Guelph but studies in Elmira, is not only trained in tap dance but is skilled at a variety of other types, including jazz, ballet, lyrical, hip hop and musical theatre. He said that one day he might like to try out

for the TV show, but currently he is three years too young.

He did however, get to spend the afternoon with Everett Smith, one of the finalists from the past season of So You Think You Can Dance, the choreographer who organized the dancers and taught the group of nervous applicants last month.

“It was a really fun atmosphere dancing with him (Smith),” said Eitzen.

“It was competitive, but that’s what makes it fun.”

Currently, he practices dance for about eight hours per week at Encore. Alongside the competition aspect, Eitzen said he gets a thrill simply from being on the dance floor and tap dancing in particular.

“I like making music with my feet,” he said with a smile. “It’s a challenge and it’s a really creative way to express yourself.”

The World Dance Championships is the only official dance championship under the umbrella of the World Dance Council. Team Canada leaves for Germany Nov. 30, returning Dec. 6.

A salad that will wow them right off the start H

ere’s a first course that is sure to wow just about anyone: who doesn’t love a good Caesar salad? The intention of a first course is to open your taste buds with some spice, and to set the mood for the rest of the dinner. This Caesar salad recipe is full of amazing flavours: the anchovy gives it its necessary body, while the capers add a ‘je ne sais quoi’ of earthy flavor. We use canola oil because it’s neutral in flavor, where olive oil can overpower the dressing.

Use a very fresh egg, as that will take away any concern about consuming raw egg. Finally, real, freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano will make this salad.

The parsley tends to get slightly charred, and the lemon juice just sings with these shrimp.

When I administer stretching programs, I have my clients perform a standard set of common stretches to establish the proper length tension in each muscle or group of muscles. I use a method called â&#x20AC;&#x153;contract/relaxâ&#x20AC;? stretching, meaning that you apply a small amount of tension to the muscle, take a deep breath, hold for five seconds, then exhale directly into the region of your body that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re stretching while releasing the tension.

This works great for those that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like stretching in the first place, as you can get a great bang for your buck, so to speak.

To be eligible to try out for Team Ontario, girls have to play AAA ringette. Every two years, for the Ontario Winter Games, each of the province’s six regions puts together an all-star team.

ast year was a good year for sports in Woolwich, with the opening of the Woolwich Memorial Centre, so it’s fitting that the Athlete of the Year awards will be handed out here May 26.

DENNIS WIDEMAN Elmira native Dennis Wideman is among this year’s nominees for the award, which recognizes the achievements of athletes from Kitchener, Waterloo, Wilmot, Wellesley and Woolwich.

The other nominees are pairs figure skater Andrew Poje, golfer Cam Burke, Alyssia Lagonia (soccer), Colin Doyle (lacrosse), wrestler Jake Jagas and Ron Vankoughnett (duathlon).

Ken Brooks, one of the members of the selection committee, said the wide variety of sports represented by this year’s nominees is nice to see.

“They’ve all accomplished tremendous things, from medals in Canadian championships to participation on national teams and involvement in international sports.”

Wideman had a career-high 50 points and 37 assists, helping the Boston Bruins finish first overall in the Eastern conference last year. He was also second among NHL defencemen with a plus/minus rating of +32.

All of 2009’s nominees have picked up hardware and won accolades provincially, nationally or internationally, but it’s still important to recognize them locally, Brooks said.

“Most of these athletes are out of the community competing, but they built their talents and skills locally.

They have said time and time again that it’s so important to be recognized locally, because that’s where they got their start, that’s where their families are, that’s where their support network is.”

The athlete of the year program also includes awards of excellence for an individual, organization and team that have demonstrated leadership,

Heading out for a hunt is no cause for alarm F

rom the moment the wild turkey season starts, my wife is hoping I’ll shoot two birds, and do it quick. This isn’t just because she loves the wonderful taste of these great game birds – although she truly does. No, the real reason she wants me to fill my tag is so she can finally sleep in past 4 a.m.

That’s about the time that I need to get up. Otherwise, I won’t make my way to my hunting grounds and get set up before first light.

Needless to say, I do my best not to wake up other members of the household. Our dogs, on the other hand, are not nearly as considerate. And, if you ask me, this is shameful.

I mean, I’ll wake up without so much as an alarm and tip-toe downstairs. Then while feeling around in the dark for a light switch, I’ll trip over a dog – usually the older Labrador retriever.

Of all of our dogs, she is the most experienced at being an obstacle in the dark. If it ever becomes an Olympic sport, in fact, she’s sure to win gold.

My dramatic tripping signals the other dogs that it’s time to raise a little hell. Often, the original dog I tripped over will howl, bark or yip even as I’m falling into the pots and pans that hang from the wall

Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea in the kitchen. This generally sets our youngest Lab off into a tizzy and, typically, she runs upstairs into bed with my wife, who is now sitting upright and cursing because of those inconsiderate dogs, no doubt.

At this point, the springer spaniel generally wakes up from a sound sleep on some forbidden couch and senses, in the dark, that I’m wearing hunting garb. She then runs to the gun cabinet and cuts me off so that I cannot leave the house to go on a hunt without taking her along.

Naturally, I explain that I’m going turkey hunting and that a flushing dog is detrimental to that pursuit, but that dog is stubborn and eventually the whole debate degenerates into a yelling match – which also does nothing for the beauty sleep that my wife is hoping to get.

I politely ask the springer to keep it down as my wife is trying to sleep. But does she listen? Of

course not. Instead, she steals my face mask and hat, which causes me to yell futile commands and then chase her throughout the upstairs level. But this time I’ve learned my lesson. I will not run in the dark. No, not while I have that million-candle flashlight.

I finally corner the springer and a big game of tug of war ensues in which several pieces of furniture and a lamp become collateral damage. I curse, the dog barks and howls.

By this time, the two Labs show up because they like nothing better than to howl along with other

dogs. I believe this is the canine equivalent of a sing-along. My wife also comes down and yells something – I assume good luck.

Then again, who the heck can hear her over the racket that those dogs are making?

In any case, she gets the dogs in order very quickly and proceeds to be anything but quiet. In fact, she yells a lot at this point. Fortunately, most of it is unintelligible and the rest of it, I’m hoping, she doesn’t really mean.

I then take that opportunity to go turkey hunting. I guess I just like the peace and quiet …

the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena, it’s fitting to honour his contributions this year, Brooks said.

The Athlete of the Year award will be handed out May 26 at the Woolwich Memorial Centre. The event starts at 6 p.m., with food sponsored by local restaurants.

most every day in winter, and came up with the idea of organizing a fundraising tournament. They’re hoping to install a heated change room and pos-

sibly new rink boards around the concrete pad to replace the aging plywood boards.

Brian and Brent’s mother Karen said the success of the tourna-

ment ensured it will become an annual event.

“There were some challenges along the way, but when they saw it come together, they were rewarded,” she said.

The Study The City of Waterloo, in coordination with participating landowners, is proceeding with the North Waterloo Scoped Subwatershed Study for lands within Subwatersheds 309, 301, 310 in the Laurel Creek Watershed. The purpose of the Subwatershed Study is to undertake detailed fieldwork and analysis to determine the areas for protection and/or enhancement, recommend management measures, and identify areas appropriate for development. The resulting Management Plan will be used as framework for the protection of natural features and functions and development of a District Plan.

The Study Area is divided into a Primary Study Area and Secondary Study Area. The Primary Study Area includes lands within the City of Waterloo currently designated for residential use and a small portion of land north of the City of Waterloo boundary. The Primary Study Area is the focus area for the Subwatershed Study and will be characterized by using secondary source information and detailed, multi-season field surveys. The Secondary Study Area, which includes lands upstream within the Townships of Woolwich and Wellesley, will be characterized primarily through review of secondary source information. The Subwatershed Study will also incorporate a review and assessment of preliminary stormwater management strategies and sanitary servicing and road alignment options to provide direction to future planning studies and applications.

The Process The Subwatershed Study is being completed in coordination with the City of Waterloo, Grand River Conservation Authority, Region of Waterloo, and Ministry of Natural Resources in the context of a Technical Steering Committee. A Background Study has been completed, the Terms of Reference for the Subwatershed Study was approved by City of Waterloo Council in May 2008, and a Technical Work Plan was approved by the Technical Steering Committee in September 2009.

These documents can be downloaded from www.waterloo.ca/NWSSS. The Subwatershed Study is proceeding in accordance with policies of the City of Waterloo’s Official Plan, as well as the policies and regulations of the other public agencies.

Public Information Centre Public input is encouraged throughout the study process. Input will primarily be facilitated through a series of Public Information Centres. The first Public Information Centre has been scheduled to allow members of the public an opportunity to review the work completed to date and to provide input into and comments on the Subwatershed Study.

division was unable to ice a team, so the Ontario Ringette Association decided to fill the gap with a composite team made up of players cut from their home region’s AAA squad.

Scott and Terry Nosal coached the team, and Sam, Paige and Josslyn all played for it. Dubbed “Northwest United,” the team won silver at all three tournaments during the season, and again at the Ontario Winter Games. At each of the tournaments, coaches for Team Ontario were on hand to scout the players and decide which ones to invite to tryouts.

The girls had already started training before they got their invitations, but getting the letter added some urgency to their workouts. The neighbours have gotten used to seeing the girls set up pylons in the street in front of their house and run sprints back and forth. Interval training is important for ringette, which requires short bursts of action. They also work on agility, speed, upper and lower body strength, core strength, and plyometrics, which help build explosive power.

In the afternoon they hit the rink again, playing 10-minute periods for two hours, without even stopping to clean the ice.

Having trained for two months, the girls thought they were wellprepared, but by that point they were exhausted. All they could do was remind themselves why they were there and how much they wanted it, and push on.

Drained by the tryouts, the girls took one day off, but by Wednesday they were back on their training schedule.

In two weeks, they head to Carleton University in Ottawa for a small tournament with several other provincial teams.

When the ringette season starts, they’ll be playing AA with St. Clements as well as taking part in monthly training camps and challenge cups in other provinces. And next February they’ll put all that training to work when they arrive in Halifax for the Winter Games.

The Township of Wellesley Requires a Building Technician The Township of Wellesley has determined that it requires an individual to fill a new role of Building Technician on a full time temporary basis, for the remainder of 2010.

Applications for this position are now being accepted. The successful applicant will join the Building Department reporting to the Chief Building Official. The Township of Wellesley is one of four rural municipalities in the Region of Waterloo with its Corporate Office in Crosshill, a hamlet approximately 20 kilometres north-west of Kitchener-Waterloo.

The successful candidate will be responsible to ensure that permit applications comply with the provisions of the Ontario Building Code, applicable law and related regulations; advise applicants and the general public of the technical and legal requirements for a building permit application submission; preliminary review of plans and specifications; calculations of applicable fees; processing permit applications; file management and other duties as assigned.

To apply for this challenging position you must possess post-secondary education from a Community College in architecture, engineering, a related field, or the equivalent in experience. You have a working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, the ability to read and interpret construction drawings and possess excellent organization, communication and computer skills and a valid Class “G” drivers’ license. Qualifications under the Building Code Act as an inspector would be considered an asset.

Goetz Construction Limited for the Snyder Avenue South Reconstruction Project. In partnership with the Region of Waterloo, the Township of Woolwich has contracted J.G. Goetz Construction Limited for the Church Street West Reconstruction Project. This project consists of the reconstruction of the following roadways:

Dog guide walk celebrates its 25th anniversary JONI MILTENBURG

O

n May 30, Elmira residents and their furry four-legged friends will hit the trail to raise funds for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.

This is the sixth year Elmira has participated in the Purina Walk for Dog Guides, which takes place along the Kissing Bridge Trail.

Dog guides are provided free to people who need them, but there’s a significant expense involved; it costs $20,000 to raise and train each dog. The program receives no

government funding and relies on fundraising to cover the costs.

Since 1985, the Walk for Dog Guides has been the major fundraiser, taking place in more than 200 communities across the country.

This is the 25th year that the walk has taken place in Canada, and organizers have set a goal of raising $1 million nationally. It’s an ambitious goal that would mean a 25 per cent jump over last year’s total.

“This being the anniversary year, we set that milestone mark,” said Melissa Eckersley

of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.

The organization supplies about 120 dogs every year, and that number is growing. The program started in 1983 with vision dog guides and has expanded to include four more types of dog guides: hearing ear, for people who are deaf or hard of hearing; special skills dog guides for people with a medical or physical disability that limits their mobility; seizure response dog guides for people with epilepsy, and in August 2009, autism assistance dog guides.

“These dogs are provided to people as young as four years old, so we’re able to help children now,” Eckersley said of the autism assistance dog guides.

Last year the Elmira walk raised about $6,700, a significant increase over 2008’s total.

This year’s event starts at 9 a.m. at the Kissing Bridge Trail, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. The event is open to people with or without a dog.

All dressed up because there’s somewhere to go Elmira woman launches local version of Princess Project to provide every girl a chance to have a dress for the prom Katie Edmonds

S

omething of the glamour and the glitz of the upcoming prom season was in the air at Elmira District Secondary School this week, all for a cause.

Thursday’s fashion show was the kickoff to The Princess Project, an event organized by Elmira resident Laura Fleming in order to collect donated dresses from the community and redistribute them at no cost to young women who might otherwise go without.

“Particularly in today’s economy, not everybody can afford to buy that expensive prom dress that they’re hoping for,” explained Fleming.

“But so many women have dresses they’re no longer using. It just makes sense to collect dresses that are sitting in people’s closets and disperse them to those who can’t afford to buy them new.”

The Princess Project began in February 2002 when a girl from San Francisco needed a dress for her high school prom.

She sent out an email to her friends, family and social network asking for assistance. The organization’s founders, two

women from the area, responded to her simple request for help by collecting dresses from their friends and family. Within days, women from all over the region had responded with overwhelming support through donations of their “time, talent, and taffeta,” and The Princess Project was born.

Since then, word has spread throughout North America and Princess Project events have been popping up all over; in the past eight years, the Princess Project has served more than 9,000 girls thanks to the dedication of more than 700 volunteers like Fleming.

So far, Fleming has collected more than 50 dresses and she is still looking for more to add to the collection. In addition to dresses, Fleming is collecting donated purses, shoes, jewelry and makeup.

“Anything that might help complete the outfit,” she explained.

Because the project is not a registered charity, Fleming cannot accept cash donations, but supporters may donate gift certificates to salons so the girls will be able to have their hair done up for their big day.

When not putting her

time and energy into the Princess Project, Fleming works for Tomboy Tools, a company which engineers tools which are ergonomically designed especially for women.

“Both my job and the Princess Project involve building women’s self esteem,” she explained.

“My experiences go hand-in-hand which has really helped me along the way.”

But with so many different complements to peanut butter, from grape jelly to bacon to bananas, there’s no need to fear the sandwich itself. U.S. vice-president Hubert Humphrey was said to relish a toasted version with added bologna, cheddar cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise and a catsup chaser.
