Once home to Good’s Garage, the land is being considered for a three-storey building that would provide storefront units on the ground floor, with apartments and perhaps even offices on the upper levels.

Having relocated the operation to Henry Street, the owners of the property have been talking with Woolwich officials about possible redevelopment plans.

oolwich Township has no plans for sweeping changes to its hunting bylaw following a close call in Breslau last weekend.

Shortly after noon Nov. 6, a shotgun slug tore through a window at Belgian Nursery, narrowly missing an unidentified customer. The slug was fired from across the road by an 18-year-old hunter who police say tried to shoot a deer across Highway 7, but missed. Police charged the Woolwich man with careless use of a firearm, and seized a weapon.

Students eager to lend a hand Trying It On For Size program has members of EDSS leadership class teaching valuable computer skills to the developmentally challenged Katie Edmonds

uth Wedmen has not seen her brother in a number of years. He moved from Canada to Germany, and from her home at Elmira District Community Living, it is not easy for Ruth to communicate with him.

This week, Ruth attended a computers class and learned how to compose and send an email; her first will be to her brother.

Ruth is one of eight EDCL residents who attend the beginner’s computer class, held every Monday evening.

Each week, the residents are matched up with students from the Elmira District Secondary School leadership class.

“Basically every week we have a different lesson plan set up,” said project co-coordinator and EDSS student Chelsey Schnurr. “This week we covered email and in the past we have helped them to learn how to use Microsoft Word, Publisher and Internet Explorer.”

volunteered to lead the class because they believe that computer use is a key skill that can help people to perform their day-to-day activities more efficiently.

“Computers are needed

for almost everything these days,” said Hurst. “You can use them for research, to find a recipe, or even something as simple as looking up when a movie is playing.”

The class is filled with people with a wide range of abilities when it comes to computer use, some of whom have never used a keyboard before and others who are adept at shortcuts and techniques.

“One of our students, Andrew, probably knows more about computers than we do,” said Schnurr. “He is teaching us a few things.”

Tami Schaafsma is the primary case manager for the ‘Trying it on for size’ program at EDCL, which gives residents an opportunity to understand what it is like to live independently. She says a program like this one is extremely helpful.

“In our program, we see what each person’s strengths are and what supports may be needed,” she explained. “This was a need that just wasn’t being met. Computers are everywhere – you go to the grocery store and there are computers. Some people are fearful of computers because they just don’t know

> CaNS drive no trick, real treat More than 100 volunteers who were out in Woolwich Township on Halloween made this year’s CANS food drive one of their most successful ever.

Colton Bauman, this year’s organizer of Citizens Always Need Supper, said the effort netted some 5,395 pounds (2,447 kilograms) of food for the Food Bank of Waterloo Region. That is only about 400 pounds less than the record they set a few years ago, and more than 400 pounds more than the 4,902 pounds (2,223 kilograms) of food they collected last year, he said.

“We’re really happy,” said Bauman.

“We weren’t expecting that much at all, we were blown away by the amount people were giving.”

> Tourism award for local campaign A marketing campaign to promote Grand River watershed trails and their birding opportunities has earned Grand River Country an Ontario Tourism Award.

The program – dubbed “Trails in Flight” – uses a combination of birding and trail hiking to promote 20 watershed trails to active seniors, mature adults and young families.

The campaign included brochures and a micro-site with maps of trails in the area, a comprehensive trail descriptions and lists of birds and birding opportunities. The award recognized ingenuity in the execution of a marketing campaign that cost less than $25,000 after the campaign doubled visits to the main website, and the micro-site continues to be the website’s most visited section.

Waterloo Regional Police are looking for the public’s help after a young boy was approached by a strange man in Woolwich Township.

On Nov. 3, an 11-year-old boy was approached by a man driving a white, one-ton pickup truck in the area of Northfield Drive and Balsam Grove Road. The driver attempted to entice the youth into his vehicle, offering him a ride and money.

The man is described as a white, in his mid-30s, with dark hair to his ears and a medium build.

Anyone with additional details about the suspect is asked to call Division 3 detectives at 519- 650-8500, ext. 3337.

Driver faces charges after leaving scene of collision was taken from a storage space on Allemang Place in Woolwich Township. According to witnesses, a man with a white flatbed truck removed the vehicle on Oct. 31. The man was described as white, 5’6”, heavyset, with light brown hair, a moustache and a baseball cap. He is around 45-50 years old and was using a crutch.

moderate damage to an 80-year-old Waterloo woman’s 2001 Lincoln after she pulled out of her parking spot on King Street in St. Jacobs and struck a passing gRT bus. The bus suffered only minor damage and nobody was injured in the collision. The woman was charged with ‘start from a stopped position not in safety.’

aterloo Regional Police and canine units were on the scene of an accident at Arthur Street, south of the roundabout in the early hours of Nov. 6. A minivan was found in the ditch next to a broken hydro pole, which had been struck in the collision.

Police were able to locate a 33-year-old man

who had lost control of the vehicle, struck the pole and then left the scene of the collision.

He suffered a concussion and a broken hand and was charged with ‘leaving the scene of an accident’ and ‘driving while under suspension.’ Waterloo Hydro was advised about the broken pole.

There were no injuries.

An 18-year-old Woolwich Township man was charged with careless use of a firearm.

Elmira man faces a variety of charges after his 2005 Chrysler was found in a ditch on the Yatton Sideroad, near the Fourth Line of Mapleton Township. Wellington County OPP officers called in to assist Mapleton firefighters discovered the driver had been drinking. He was administered a roadside screening device test, which resulted in a fail.

The man was subsequently charged with ‘over 80 mgs,’ ‘drive disqualified’ and ‘breach of probation.’ He is scheduled to appear in guelph court on Dec. 13 to answer to the charges.

police after spotting a vehicle being driven erratically on Northfield Drive near Line 86. The vehicle, a 1990 white Chevrolet Uplander, was attempting to pass several vehicles when it veered off to the side of the road, went into a farmer’s field and then back up the ditch. When police stopped the vehicle, they arrested a 56-year-old Kitchener man and he was charged with ‘impaired driving’ and ‘operation of a motor vehicle with more than 80mg of alcohol.’

Street, Elmira resident called police after a leaf blower, a heavy-duty battery and a gas tank with $70 worth of gasoline inside was stolen from his pickup truck. The fuel line was also cut on the truck.

Police have not yet identified any suspects.

Gunshot: Woolwich to look at better educating hunters following incident > CONTINUED FROM COVER in the store. “Definitely it’s an isolated incident,� explained township clerk Christine Broughton. “We haven’t had any other issues come up this (hunting) season.�

The manager of the nursery, Rosemary Galivan, said the whole experience has been surreal. “I think everybody was in shock when we realized what happened. It was the disbelief of ‘did that actually happen?’�

Since the fright of

last Saturday’s incident, however, business at the store has almost returned to normal. “A lot of customers are coming in and talking about it, but I think people are talking about it everywhere,�

Galivan noted.

She was also quick to point out that it was an isolated incident, and a poor choice by a single individual. She hopes the township does not spend too much time or energy reviewing bylaws or making new rules surrounding guns because of the incident at her store.

“I would hate if it was really blown out of proportion,� she said. “It’s no different than someone driving on the road that decides to talk on their cell phone and kills someone. It was just one of those bad judgment scenarios.�

Under the current township bylaw, hunters are not permitted to discharge any firearm within the 200-metre buffer zone surrounding urban or commercial settlements in Woolwich, including Bast Place, Bloomingdale, Breslau, Conestogo, Crowsfoot

Corner, Eldale, Elmira, Floradale, Heidelberg, Martin Grove, Maryhill, Mundil, St. Jacobs, Shantz Station, Winterbourne, and West Montrose.

What Broughton intends to do is examine the properties within the buffer area surrounding Breslau and Shantz Station, and send a reminder notice to residents that they are within the buffer zone and that hunting is prohibited in that area.

s we start preparing for holiday festivities and feasts, the fact that others will go without becomes even more apparent. Next Saturday, more than 160 volunteers – members of the Kiwanis Club of Elmira, plus friends, family and other community service organizations – will try improve the

lot of those less fortunate when they take to the streets of Woolwich Township seeking donations for the annual Christmas Goodwill Food Drive, with proceeds going to support the Woolwich Community Services Christmas Goodwill hamper program.

The success of the event has grown steadily over the past few

“The zoning allows for a three-storey building. It would allow mixed use, as long as the first floor frontage is commercial,” John Scarfone explained.

A plan that met those requirements could move ahead with only site-plan approval needed.

One issue the township will be looking at closely, however, is parking. Unlike Elmira, where there is a large municipal lot, St. Jacobs has parking issues downtown. That means development of the site would have to include an appropriate amount of parking.

A larger concern, though, is the constraint on overall development in the village due to a lack of capacity at the sewage treatment plant there.

Others, including Mercedes Corp., Home Hardware and developers of the Valleyview Heights subdivision, are interested in expansion, eyeing closely the capacity figures.

With a capacity of 1.45 million litres per day and a current usage of 0.98 million litres, the plant has room to handle growth in the village of about

289 more people. The number is actually up over the past couple of years, due largely to a new formula for calculating capacity, but represents only a small part of potential development. Mercedes, for instance, has scaled back plans for a residential project on lots at 10 Front St. and 1441 King St. N. in St. Jacobs. Originally looking at 70 units, they cut that to 46 before dropping the size down to the 14 townhouses proposed last year.

There’s a pressing need for upgrades at the sewage plant, but no work is scheduled until 2014.

The Grade 11 and 12 students volunteer their time each week and enjoy seeing the progress, and some EDCL residents have battled coughs and colds just to make sure they can make it to their class.

“They love it,” said Schaafsma. “Besides being about learning to use the computer, it’s a social environment and it gets them out into the community.

Perfect score Elmira student posts region's only 100% finish in national math competition James Jackson

uick, what’s 137 divided by 14,000? For those of you without a calculator, it’s approximately 0.009.

That’s also the percentage of Grade 7 students who achieved a perfect score on the annual Gauss Mathematics contest around the world. Elmira’s own Amitan Pope is one of those students.

On Nov. 5 the results of last May’s Gauss contest were released, and the young resident of Elmira was one of those 137 students to get a perfect score of 150 on the test – and the only student in the entire Waterloo Region to attain the lofty mark.

Just over 14,000 Grade 7 students from 751 schools wrote the test.

“One of the surprising things was in past years there was always at least a few kids in Grade 7 in the area who got perfect,” said his father David Pope. “But this year he was the only one. That was kind of interesting.”

The test is administered by the University of Waterloo and is designed to help students develop their math skills along the Canadian curriculum. It is a multiple-choice test consisting of 25 questions and students had an hour to complete it.

It covers many of the major mathematic concepts, including area, mass, and volume.

“It’s a little bit different than the regular curriculum,” noted Amitan, admitting that “it was pretty easy.”

The questions on the test get steadily more difficult as students make their way from question one to 25, and they also receive zero marks for attempting the questions or showing their work – as is with the case with all multiple-choice tests, they are either right, or wrong.

teacher who found that he was way ahead of the other kids. He attended St. Teresa until Grade 5, then moved on to the public school system, which his parents thought might help him with his gift.

Amitan attended Elmira’s Park Manor for Grade 6, but switched to a gifted class at Courtland Se-

nior Public School in Kitchener for Grade 7. Now, he makes the 45-minute bus ride into Kitchener every day, after having to be driven every morning and night by his parents last year. He says the extra distance and time it takes to travel to the gifted school in Kitchener is well worth it.

“I would say it’s a lot

more fun,” he said. “It’s more challenging and it’s more easygoing, but we do the work. A lot more work.”

His entire class – which consists of gifted students in a wide range of subjects such as art and music, not just math – wrote the test, and one of Amitan’s best friends, George Utsin, only got

one question wrong.

He may be only 13 years old, but Amitan is also looking forward to his future.

“I would like to go into medicine, I like the idea of being a doctor,” he said. “I like the idea of curing people, and I’m fascinated by robotic surgery and anesthesiology. It’s pretty cool.”

Prison spending should reflect real priorities

A

new Supreme Court of Canada decision is likely to cause a resurgence in arguments about victims’ rights in this country.

This week, the court ordered the estate of a Quebec man who killed his wife and two children before taking his own life to pay $10,000 to his dead wife’s family. While the dollar figure pales in comparison to the heinousness of the act that unfolded in April 2002, it does raise the issue of what criminals owe their victims.

That question is certainly in play in the case of Russell Williams, the former military officer who was recently convicted in the murder of two women. The sensational stories surrounding the proceedings painted a picture of a true sexual predator.

Stripped of his rank and discharged from the Canadian Forces, he is still in line for a generous pension.

Should he be blocked from ever

receiving that or any other government money? Should it be paid, but diverted to the families of victims?

What about the other assets Williams accumulated over the years? Should they be seized and sold for the benefit of victims?

Denying Williams his pension and other monies taken from taxpayers’ seems the right thing to do, especially as we’ll likely be paying in excess of $100,000 a year to keep him in prison – the average cost is more than $80,000 a year, with much higher expenses for segregated prisoners such as Williams.

Should we be extracting more from prisoners to compensate victims? To help cover costs? That’s applicable in the Williams case, but many who end up in the prison system have little in the way of assets. That reality leads us to the other side of the equation: costs. It chafes that we spend $80,000-

And, accurate or not, the public perception is that prisons are far too cushy, though not all of them are the kind of Club Fed minimum security facilities we associate with the likes of Conrad Black and other white collar criminals.

The penitentiary system is no walk in the park, but it could get a whole lot leaner and meaner, reducing the costs borne by taxpayers. For those destined for a lifetime in the system – not just lifers, but the dregs who are in and out of prison, the source of our revolving-door notion of justice – there’s no need to speak of rehabilitation. We’re talking only of warehousing, and that could be done much more cheaply.

That doesn’t mean privatization, however. There’s been much talk of

the U.S. model given the Harper government’s tough-on-crime rhetoric – the Conservatives plan to spend in excess of $10 billion on new prisons.

But if we’re going to chuck more people into jail, we’d better have good reason … and we’d better try to make do with the money already in the budget.

Surely it shouldn’t cost more to warehouse a prisoner that should never be returned to society than it does to put a student through medical school, for instance.

We’ll have to wring more compensation out of offenders. It means spending the money on victims’ rights, crime prevention and other quality of life improvements that reduce criminality rather than on the prisons themselves, which ought to reflect Canadians’ desires for harsh punishment – we are picking up the tab, after all.

Here come the Islamist nuclear terrorists!

Y

ou probably noticed reports recently about the secret trial in Georgia of two Armenian men who tried to sell highly enriched uranium (HEU) to a man purporting to be an Islamist terrorist. The apparent buyer was actually an undercover policeman and the whole thing was a sting operation from start to finish, but it offers some interesting insights into the current state of play in the world of counter-terrorism.

The would-be sellers of the HEU were two naive losers, a 63-year-old failed businessman called Sumbat Tonoyan, who had gambled his money away, and a 59-year-old physicist named Hrant Obanyan who was chronically ill. They both wanted to score a big win in order to finance their retirement, and they fell right into the Georgian police trap.

A petty criminal called Garik Dadayan first approached Obanyan in 2002 with a packet of metallic powder, asking whether it was highly enriched uranium. Obanyan, a scientist at the Yerevan Physics Institute, confirmed that it was uranium though he could not say how enriched it was – and Dadayan was subsequently arrested trying to cross the frontier into Georgia with 200 grams (about 7 ounces) of HEU. Dadayan was out of jail again by 2005, so Obanyan knew where to go when his friend Tonoyan suggested that they could make a fortune by peddling HEU to terrorists. Dadayan told them that he had friends in Russia who could supply them with unlimited amounts of HEU, and suggested that they start by finding a buyer and selling him a sample amount of, say, 100 grams. The poor fools believed him.

It’s almost certain that Dadayan was working for the Georgian intelligence service by this time (how else would

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER he get out of jail so fast?). The fact that in the end he only gave them 18 grams (half an ounce) of HEU to take to Georgia reinforces that suspicion. And of course it was the Georgian police who supplied the “buyer,” a Turkish-speaking undercover policeman who said he was in the market for nuclear material on behalf of “serious people.”

Last March the two mugs took the night train from Yerevan to Tbilisi, with the 18 grams of HEU hidden in a cigarette box that was lined with lead strips to fool the American-supplied radiation detectors at the border. When Tonoyan showed up at a Tbilisi hotel the next day to close the sale (he was asking $50,000 per gram), the police filmed the whole transaction and then arrested him and his partner-in-crime.

Georgia’s motivation in all this is clear. Prime Minister Mikheil Saakashvili is trying to rebuild the close relationship he used to have with the United States before his rash failed attempt to seize South Ossetia by force in 2008. He will do anything he can do to make himself useful to the American intelligence services, and this serves that purpose.

Why do the U.S. intelligence services want to emphasise the risk of nuclear material falling into the wrong hands?

Because that would be a bad thing, of course, but also to underline the fact that thwarting nuclear terrorism is entirely a job for the intelligence services.

The alleged threat of nuclear terrorism is used to justify the whole U.S. policy of invading countries that might provide “bases” for such terrorist attacks. It was the main (although utterly false) justification for the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and it continues to be used to justify American threats to attack Iran.

But what do the intelligence people want us to conclude from this episode?

That the U.S. should invade Armenia?

Obviously not.

They want us to conclude that the military should not be allowed anywhere near counter-terrorist operations, partly because the tools they use – infantry, artillery, etc. – are entirely inappropriate for the job, and partly because invading countries tends to radicalize people and turn them into your enemies.

The little show-and-tell in Georgia serves the purposes of the more intelligent American intelligence officers, who know that the military must be excluded from their operations but have trouble in fending them off. It also helps to justify their budgets, although the threat they are seeking to protect us from is smaller than they claim.

he days when farmers anonymously ship their crops or livestock to a large food corporation are numbered, and the business of farming is evolving from simply crop or livestock management to a full spectrum of business operations, according to Liz Samis, leader of the ‘Growing Your Farm Profits’ workshop to be held in Linwood this month.

“A lot of people think that farming is an easy business or that it doesn’t take much skill, but they don’t realize that each farm is its own small or large business,” said Samis. “Farmers who want to be profitable should be thinking about things like marketing, financial management and all those things that business owners have to be on top of.”

Growing Your Farm Profits is a two-day workshop, delivered by the Ontario

Soil and Crop Improvement Association, designed to guide participating farmers through a self-assessment of their operation and help them to develop action plans that are unique to their individual farm. Succession planning, costs of production, financial planning and value-added opportunities are the most emphasized areas of focus for the workshop.

Succession planning, said Samis, is a term that is often uncomfortable for farmers to discuss as they imagine it to mean the loss of their farm and home. Through a goal-setting exercise, however, participants are managing to see succession planning as a strategic way to move towards their target financial achievements and plan for a successful business once they are no longer able to manage the farm.

“Goal-setting is a great exercise for farmers to do

because oftentimes we get so busy farming that the business takes over and we don’t really step back from it and say ‘Where are we going here? How are we doing?’” said Samis, who operates a cropping operation with her husband near Drayton, growing wheat, soy beans and corn. “This is very good for farms who are thinking about bringing in the next generation.”

Additionally, the workshop helps to identify business strengths in areas including marketing, human resources, social responsibility, business structure and business strategy.

“It’s funny to think of family farms having to sort out things like human resources but it is a really helpful exercise to do,” she explained. “By laying out job expectations and work environment practices, it can help to reduce conflict.

Oftentimes in families we are expected to read minds,

which doesn’t work so well in business.”

Due to the increased interest in local food, consumers are seeking out information about the farmers who produce the food on their table – they want to know about the social and environmental practices of each farm.

“A lot of people are doing direct marketing these days on their farms; they’re marketing directly from the farmers to the consumers,” she noted. “Today’s consumers want to know that as trusted individuals, we are producing safe food, and that we are doing it in environmentally friendly ways.

It’s important to know how to convey that message and marketing skills are very important."

Samis has worked with hundreds of farmers across Ontario since the program was launched, using her more than 30 years in agriculture to provide real-life

“I am not a business expert, I am a fellow farmer,” she said. “I wouldn’t do this workshop if I didn’t believe in it. I think the biggest thing that I want to happen is for farm families to be talking and communicating. That is so important.”

The sessions are open to anyone who is interested in farm management and each workshop averages around 20 participants.

“I have had people who have three acres of land and those who have really big farms and they learn from each other. There is a lot of wisdom in the room and a lot of life experiences so it’s a very neat opportunity.”

Sunny financial forecast hinges on farmers’ recovery A

griculture has faced its fair share of perfect storms that have made a mess of the landscape, economically, practically and figuratively. But in the next year, a new scenario could emerge that will make those storm clouds a thing of the past.

Here’s the buzz. There’s been a lot of talk about agriculture leading Ontario out of the recession, about it rising to become the number-one economic driver, and about how everyone had better jump on the bandwagon or get left behind.

Indeed, isolated incidents have given weight for this prediction to evolve.

But conditions weren’t quite right – the climate was not conducive to investment, no matter how promising the sector. And prices for commodities had sunk so low that a deep chasm existed between farmers’ reality and the kind of prosperity they should be experiencing, if agriculture is being appropriately recognized.

However, that appears to be changing.

And as it does, agriculture may finally

should be tempered by some perspective on where the prices are rising from.

As well, the U.S. dollar and the Canadian dollar are reaching parity, giving farmers here an opportunity to upgrade machinery, a vast majority of which comes from the United States.

And finally – and this is vital – the province has rolled out the welcome mat for entrepreneurs. Some still feel caught up in red tape, but others are taking advantage of initiatives such as Ontario Rural Economic Development Program and the Premier’s Open Ontario Plan to capitalize on opportunities.

For example, last week the province dedicated $1 million to helping a Calgary meat processor relocate to St. Catharines and be closer to markets.

The company, New Food Classics, says having the province’s support was key to making the move. New Food Classics will spend $5 million on the relocation and refitting of a processing operation that had closed in St. Catharines, creating as many as 400 new jobs over the

He sees it like this. Interest rates are basically at rock bottom, with little change forecast. That makes borrowing easier for farmers, to buy equipment, build buildings and service debt.

At the same time, prices farmers receive for their crops and livestock are, for the most part, on the upswing, but not so much as to promote panic like they did a few years ago when they started to rise. This time around, they too are starting from rock bottom. Any dire warnings of skyrocketing food prices

next five years.

Bigger yet is the impact on agriculture. The province says the facility will increase the product demand from local meat producers and processors. Processing capacity in Ontario is a limiting factor in the meat sector’s growth, and a weak link in the value chain. Farmers need reliable and fair processors to turn their commodities into consumer goods.

They can’t all sell local food at the end of their lanes.

So, interest rates are low, commodity rises are rising, the loonie is on par with the U.S. dollar, and the province is eager to do business. That sounds like a recipe for success.

It depends though on whether farmers can hang on. They’ve been battered and bruised for years by low prices, trade restrictions and economic uncertainty.

Their recovery hinges in part on more reliable programs to mitigate the inherent risk in farming.

Because when they recover, so does the province.

One of his most recent acquisitions, however, has a very special place in his garage. It is a 1949 MG TC that was once owned by Canadian racing legend Tommy Hoan – known as the “Giant Killer” – who raced from 1950 to 1953 in Ontario as well as the United States.

“He won a lot of races,” says Holmes of Hoan. “He was known for being a daring and exciting racer.”

The classic car cannot make a return to the racetrack, though – at least, not in Canada.

“It’s not suitable to race in Canada because it doesn’t have a fuel-cell, which is one of the require-

ments,” he said, adding that the fuel cell is a safety measure which uses a sponge inside to prevent gas from leaking out of the car in the event of an accident. He does plan on taking the car to the United States to race next season, though, where fuel cells are not required.

Make most of this appetizer ahead of time; toast the bread and make the mushrooms up to four hours in advance. Grate the cheese. To serve, just re-heat the mushroom mixture in a frying pan (preferably) or microwave, top bread with mushrooms and then top with cheese.

Pair this appetizer with a good Riesling wine or even sparkling apple cider to get the party started!

Heat a heavy pan over high heat, add canola oil, and all of the mushrooms so that they form a single layer in the pan; Immediately add 3 tbsp of water and let cook, undisturbed for about 5-7 minutes (until mushrooms are caramelized on the bottom); Lower heat and add butter, leek, shallots and herbs; season with salt and pepper; keep warm; Toast bread in a 400-degree oven; remove and immediately rub with the cut side of a garlic clove; Top with mushroom mixture; Garnish with shaved Gruyere cheese.

Coach stresses basics after Kings drop two

Lack of discipline, failure to play as a team cited as reasons for pair of weekend losses Katie edmonds

he Kitchener Dutchmen squeaked past the Elmira Sugar Kings 3-2 in a penalty-filled game at the Woolwich Memorial Centre last Sunday. Coach Haddaway blames the loss on a lack of discipline.

“When things got down a little bit, we got too individual,” he said of the results Nov. 7. “A lot of times players want to take it on themselves to be that person to tie up the game or to get that next big goal but for us to do well, we need to be working together as a team.”

In a match with 75 minutes of penalties, the Dutch-

men’s effective powerplay capitalized on two of their nine man-advantages. Elmira managed almost twice as many shots (37-21), yet were only able to get two pucks past the Kitchener netminder. A very physical game created a lot of powerplay chances for both teams, nine and 10 for Kitchener and Elmira respectively, but Elmira was unable to take advantage of their chances, going 0-for-10.

The first period saw Elmira take control of the play; the Kings fired 14 shots on the Dutchmen’s goaltender while keeping Kitchener to only eight shots. Their fastpaced play gave Elmira an

early lead with a goal by Lukas Baleshta off a feed from Spencer MacCormack just fewer than nine minutes into the game.

“The first period was probably our best,” said the coach.

“After that, we sort of became our own worst enemies.”

When unable to capitalize on opportunities, both teams stepped up the chippy play, providing plenty of opportunities for their special teams: 11 penalties were handed out, ranging from bench minors, to unsportsmanlike conduct, abuse of officials, and checking from behind.

The same Elmira offensive pressure continued into the second period – the Kings

put another 14 pucks on net, but they couldn’t bury any of them. In this frame, Kitchener had only limited chances, but they made effective use of them. With only five shots on net in 20 minutes, the Dutchmen were able to put two of those past Elmira netminder Tyler McGregor.

“Our powerplay struggled on Sunday and that has been an on-and-off issue throughout the year,” said Haddaway.

“We are working on that, as well as our penalty killing and I know we have the personnel to get better at those things. We just need to simplify things a bit, and we need to get back to basics.”

The intensity of the sec-

ond period carried over to the last frame, with another 12 penalties handed out within the last 20 minutes: two ‘too many men’ minor infractions, more unsportsmanlike conduct, plus some roughing, and another ‘abuse of officials’ misconduct penalty.

Kitchener struck first with their second powerplay goal of the game by Phil Edgar, just six minutes into the period.

Elmira’s Brady Campbell (Wade Pfeffer, Baleshta) battled back with one of his own, less than two minutes later to close the gap to one.

Jacks go into break with winning ways Despite injuries and emergency call-ups, Wellesley digs deep to beat Hagersville Hawks James Jackson

he Jacks had been playing a lot of extra hockey heading into a 10-day break, ending the run with an overtime victory Nov. 3 in Hagersville.

The win against the Hawks saw the Wellesley squad bound back from a pair of OT losses to the Tavistock Braves and Burford Bulldogs.

“Everything that I was complaining that we didn’t do against Tavistock and Burford,

we probably played the best team game that we have played all year,” said coach Kevin Fitzpatrick.

The Jacks were five players short heading into the game, forcing them to call up Mark Detzler from their Twin Centre Midget team. He played defence, and Fitzpatrick was pleased with his performance.

“He ended up playing a lot of hockey that he probably didn’t expect, and he did a great job.”

Wellesley opened the scor-

ing at 15:12 of the first with the only goal of the period. Chris Bauman potted his second of the season, assisted by Corey Way and Rob Hinschberger.

Hinschberger added to the lead early into the second period, with his fifth goal of the campaign at 1:03, from Bauman and Way, making it 2-0.

Hagersville made it a onegoal game a short time later when Derek Medeiros scored at 2:50.

Through the first two periods

it was a fairly even game, and the shots were almost even at 30-27 in favour of the Hawks.

In the third, however, Wellesley let Hagersville back into the game with the tying goal at 5:56.

The Applejacks responded 10 seconds later though by skating right down the ice and retaking the lead, 3-2, thanks to Justin Roeder, from Bauman and Metzger. The Hawks tied it up at 3-3 at 10:54, and the period ended without any more scoring, sending the Jacks to their

third consecutive overtime.

The Jacks’ special teams broke through in the extra frame, thanks to an undisciplined play by Hagersville’s Dakota Powless. At 2:57 he was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for slashing, and the Jacks made them pay. Way won the game in overtime with his third point of the night, from Hinschberger, at 4:05.

O

n this lake, it happened yesterday. I woke up somewhere around sunrise with deer hunting gear in hand, stepped out of my door and was surprised to see four ducks take off from just beyond the dock. I watched as those birds – all beautiful, black-and-white drakes – completed their powerful running take off and smiled as they circled low on the water while the high-pitched sound of their wingbeats spilled over and mingled with the breeze. Then I surveyed the lake and noticed four more flocks of that boreal species loafing within sight. The whistlers had arrived.

Whistler is another one of those nicknames – like greenhead, butterball, black jack, baldpate and bluebill – bestowed upon a duck by us waterfowlers. In this case, the name is given to Common Goldeneyes. And it suits them well. For when they fly, it sounds like they’re whistling a tune to get your attention.

To me, these ducks have always marked the passing year. They descend upon our lakes like clockwork, around the second week of November. When the whistlers are in, you just know that ponds further north are freezing and winter isn’t too far behind.

More than that, the yellow-eyed ducks leave a sportsman like me undecided. Do I hunt deer today or get in on the fine gunning action that whistlers provide?

Yesterday, I chose to hunt deer, since a buck tag still weighs heavy in my pocket. But the ducks provide all the more urgency to fill it and get out on that cold water to hear those whistling wings echo across this big, old lake.

Part of this is vengeance, I suppose. If any duck can make a hunter spill coffee, it is a whistler.

When they pass close overhead, it sounds as if you’re being buzzed by a jet. In the distance, their whistling wings make it sound as if they are coming from everywhere all at once.

Unlike our species, the drakes are beautiful. Their dramatic black-and-white markings remind you of a gent in a tuxedo, ready for a night on the town – something decidedly different from what the unshaven men in a deer camp remind you of. The hens

too, are elegant in their own ways with chocolate brown heads and greyish backs. Both are hard fliers and often buffleheads accompany them, another northern bird that is similarly marked but not nearly so big.

The thing is that I’m a waterfowler at heart, so the temptation to forget the deer hunt for a day or so is growing with each minute I watch these birds. So I weigh the options for the hundredth time.

And I think I might be missing my chance to shoot a buck with my rifle, but I’d be replacing it with some of the finest waterfowling of the season. And that’s not such a bad deal.

As I write this, a flock of four drakes is punctuating the point by swimming about 100 metres off of my dock. They’re diving for their food and taunting me to get the duck boat out there once again. And today I’ll oblige them by untangling my whistler decoys and organizing my boat blind for one more foray. And tomorrow morning, I’ll forego the deer hunt – there’s always the archery season, after all – and see if I can still hit these fast flying ducks as they somehow catch me by surprise and swing over the spread.

And, this time, I’ll be careful with my coffee.

The solid play of Hinschberger, Way, and Bauman certainly helped too. The three stepped up in the absence of their teammates, and had a goal and two assists each on the night.

The win pushes the Jacks record to 7-2-2 through 11 games, a vastly improved record over last season, already matching their win total when they went 7-23-6 to finish last in the con-

ference. They are positioned well in the standings, trailing the division-leading Tavistock Braves by four points, with a game in hand.

The Jacks have had the past 10 days off, returning to the ice in Port Dover tomorrow (Sunday) at 2 p.m. against the Sailors.

“I was dreading the time off, but when you look at the injuries that we’ve got, we needed

the time off,” said Fitzpatrick about the layoff between games.

Not only were the Jacks short five players going into their game against Hagersville, Fitzpatrick said they lost three more players to injury in the closing minutes of the third period and into overtime.

“We’re going to have to play a lot of games in the next few weeks to catch up, but you

know what, we’ve been hardpressed to put 15 healthy bodies on the ice.

“I got a text from one kid who hurt his knee and he said he can practice this week, and another guy who hurt his shoulder and he’s had about 14 days off, so [the time off] is great.”

The next Jacks home game is Nov. 19 at 8:30 p.m. when they take on the Ayr Centennials.

That was as close as it got, as a late push came up short, leaving the Dutchmen to enjoy a 3-2 final.

“This is something that happens throughout a season,” said Haddaway of the Kings’ weekend slump – the team lost to Stratford 7-2 on Nov. 5. “You hit some bumps in the road and good teams find ways to face that adversity and overcome it. I have the same amount of faith if

not more faith in our guys now than I did two weeks ago when we were hot.”

The Kings play three games this weekend. Their next home game is tomorrow (Sunday) against Stoney Creek at the Woolwich Memorial Centre. The puck drops at 7 p.m.

“We have a lot of games coming up in a short period of time and I am anxious to get going. It’s going to be a great test for us and we will get through it.”

Winterbourne resident Lynne Martin has been invited to participate in the 2011 National 55+ Senior Games in Houston, Texas next June. Martin, 65, won a bronze medal at the Canada 55+ Games in Brockville in August, and will be competing in the 100-metre freestyle sprint in Houston.

“I’m honoured to be selected and to represent the area,” Martin said. The 16-day event is scheduled to run from June 19 to July 5, 2011, with more than 50,000 athletes from across the United States and Canada expected to participate.

Guelph Storm forward Michael Latta is the AMJ Campbell Van Lines player of the week, the hockey club announced Monday.

The St. Clements native recorded five points in two games last weekend. He set up Zack Mitchell for the winner in the third as the Storm defeated Windsor 5-3, and also scored the empty-net insurance goal against the Spitfires. On Sunday afternoon against the Ottawa 67's, the 19 year old scored once in the first and twice in the second, including a shorthanded breakaway goal, to record the fourth hat trick of his career and second in less than a month.

The Predators draft pick is currently tied with Peter Holland for the team lead in goals (12) and sits fifth in the OHL.

t may be a “Hard Knock Life,” but you can bet your bottomdollar things will be better “Tomorrow” – the optimism is unstoppable when everyone’s favourite little redheaded orphan is around.

Smiling, toe-tapping and the urge to sing along are likely to abound during the If The Shoe Fits Productions staging of Annie Jr., which opens next week in St. Jacobs.

A slightly scaled back version of the Broadway musical, the junior version is just the right fit for a cast of kids, which is what If The Shoe Fits is all about.

Directors Charlène Le Duc and Garrett Shoemaker are working with about 35 young performers, ranging in age from six to 17 years.

“This is a version of Annie taken from the Broadway musical, which drew directly on the old comic strip,” said Le Duc, adding audiences will see all the familiar components of Little Orphan Annie.

The story revolves around the spunky, Depression-era orphan determined to find the parents who abandoned her on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. In adventure after fun-filled adventure,

“All of the story elements are there, just the songs have been shortened to make the musical more family-friendly as far as time is concerned.”

Although it’s a period piece, Annie resonates with the young actors, who have eagerly immersed themselves in the story, noted Le Duc. “We really work with them on their characters. We talk about it at length in development – who their characters are and their motivations –to get them to identify with that character,” she said. “At this point, the actors are definitely identifying with their characters.”

Even after eight seasons of If The Shoe Fits Productions, Le Duc said she continues to be astounded by the enthusiasm of young performers. When the group was holding auditions last spring, for instance, more than 500 kids turned out.

“We had a lot of interest. It was amazing the talent out there.”

second nature. Now, even some of the kids who’ve been involved for four or five years are lending a hand with the day-today operations, providing extra help – “They’re willing to take that on.”

Along with the sheer entertainment of the story, If The Shoe Fits will also be accepting donations for the Farley Foundation, which helps seniors and disabled Ontarians cover the cost of their pets’ veterinarian bills.

“With a story full of orphans and a dog at the center of attention, we thought that would be a good cause,” said Le Duc, noting plenty of pet owners associated with the show were eager to have their dog in the role of Sandy.

In the end, it was the choreographer’s dog who won the audition – “such a sweet dog … everyone will want to adopt Sandy after seeing the show,” she laughed.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE DISCHARGE OF FIREARMS IN THE TOWNSHIP OF WOOLWICH Township of Woolwich By-law No. 108-2004 regulates the discharge of guns or other firearms, including air-guns, spring-guns, crossbows, long-bows or any other weapon within the Township.

• All hunters must carry written permission of the property owner.

• No recreational hunting is permitted within 200 metres (656 feet) of a residential settlement boundary!

The Firearms By-law sets out that no person shall discharge a gun or other firearm within any prohibited area which includes all lands within the boundary of the settlements, industrial/commercial areas defined in the Township of Woolwich Official Plan including Bast Place, Bloomingdale, Breslau and South Breslau Industrial Area, Conestogo, Crowsfoot Corner, Eldale, Elmira, Floradale, Heidelberg, Martin Grove, Maryhill, Mundil, St. Jacobs, Shantz Station, Stockyards Area, Weber, Winterbourne, and West Montrose and the Region of Waterloo International Airport lands.

An 8-14-inch cat’s tail (20-36 centimetres) is a balancing aid or balancing “pole,” key to the phenomenal feline sense of balance, says Amanda O’Neill in Cat Biz. Walking along the top of a fence, a cat maintains its center of gravity by adjusting the position of its tail, just as a tightrope walker uses a pole. Scientists who trained cats to cross a narrow beam observed that when the beam wobbled sideways, the cats instantly swung their tails in the opposite direction to keep their balance -- but tailless cats tended to fall off.

It was the 1870s, a time of technical explosion with the invention of the telephone and phonograph and with Thomas Edison about to unveil the light bulb, reported Stanford University Magazine. The scientific world was also debating whether a galloping racehorse lifts all four legs in the air at once, with advocates swearing they did and opponents vehemently denying it.

Enter advocate Leland Stanford, future university founder and avid horseman, whose interest was to clinch his pet theory. He turned to Muybridge for help. It took five years of experimentation but the photographer got the shots, using 12 cameras whose shutters were

triggered by wires stretched across a racetrack. Muybridge’s 1878 film stunned the world when he caught a galloping horse in the act of “flying,” with all four legs off the ground.

“Those hoofbeats reverberated in art and science and are still being heard today. And in pursuing for Stanford the secrets of equine gait, Muybridge unwittingly set the stage for a spectacular invention: the motion picture.”
