FAISAL ALI The national blood services agency has issued an urgent call for donations this week, ahead of the Labour Day long weekend in September. Citing diminished stocks across the country – typical during the summer months when Canadians are enjoying the holidays – Canadian Blood Services have requested 22,000 blood donations by August 26.

The urgent call comes amidst a trend of declining donations in Elmira over the past several years.

“In Elmira specifically, we’ve been having a bit of a hard time getting donors to come out consistently to donate,” said Emma BLOOD | 3

Hoping to give residents another option, Kiwanis Transit is preparing for the launch of its new scheduled bus route in Elmira starting on September 4.

The pilot project was approved by both the township and the Region of Waterloo.

And then we have separate rules for the laborers. So they do their starter wall, they lay up two courses of block and then one course of bricks.

So they’re not working way down at the ground; they’re almost at their knees when they’re starting. Because your first course is really hard to lay out.”

Hot summer has translated into big demand for new Elmira splash pad VERONICA REINER Hot, hazy and humid weather has made Elmira’s splash pad a popular destination in its first full summer of operation. How that will impact the township’s planned operating budget is still to be determined.

The Bolender Park facility opened at the tail end of last summer, taking advantage of a warm start to fall. Since an official grand opening on June 2 this year, the place has been busy. There’s been much splashing around and very little fretting about the costs, notes Woolwich’s director of recreation and facilities.

“Council had approved $30,000 in the annual budget,” Ann McArthur said. “So that was approved in January. And that’s for operating the pad, so that primarily includes the use of water and any chemicals that we need for the system.”

Operating costs, a topic of council debate when the facility was being planned, haven’t been an issue to this point, she added.

“I have not heard of any complaints; we’ve had lots of positive feedback from the community who are just thoroughly enjoying it,” said McArthur. “Both residents and tourists are coming in,

Over the past five years, donations have dropped by almost a third at the Elmira clinic, from a monthly average of 132 units in 2013 to just 94 units in 2017. And the trend has continued well into 2018, says Willms.

“Over the past year even it’s been difficult for us to maintain consistency, to know how many donors are going to come out each time,” she said. “Especially during the summer months we have an incredibly difficult time getting donors to any of our clinics, but in Elmira as well.”

Attracting younger people to donate more on a regular basis has been a particular challenge for the blood clinic, notes Willms.

“And with the population aging, the majority of our donor base is part of that aging population,” she says.

There is no upper age limit on blood donors anymore, notes Willms, but people still need to be in good health, as well as not be on any medications that would prohibit donating blood.

“So unforunately a lot of people in the aging population are ineligible to donate.

And when they become ineligible, we need to find new younger donors who are going to donate consistently to replace them.”

The Elmira clinic has also

been struggling to draw in more of the non-Mennonite population to the clinics.

“They are immensely supportive,” said Willms of the traditional Mennonite population.

“From 16 weeks out from a clinic date, we look at how are numbers are prebooking, and it’s difficult for us to understand our pre-booking numbers in communities like Elmira,” she adds. “Because not really anybody pre-books in Elmira because it’s a mostly Mennonite attended clinic.”

For residents in and around Elmira, the monthly blood donor clinic is being held tomorrow (Friday) at the Elmira Lions Hall from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Donors can drop-in during those hours, or pre-book an appointment online at www.blood.ca, or by calling 1-888-2DONATE. “We like to remind people that when we say that it is in you to give, and your donation is going to help save somebody’s life, we really, truly mean it,” said Willms.

“The process takes about an hour out of your life, and the actual donation process is only about 10 minutes.

“So with that hour and that 10 minutes ... you’re going to walk out of the clinic doors knowing that in just a few days time your blood is going to be processed, sent to a hospital, and it’s going to quite literally save somebody’s life.”

From Monday to Friday, the bus service starts at Church Street at 7:39 a.m., with the last bus leaving at 11:15 a.m. From there, there is a three-hour break after which the bus service resumes at 2:30 p.m., and runs until 5 p.m. The route has been scheduled to line up with the arrival and departure of the Route 21 GRT as much as possible, adds Fisher.

The new service is being tested as a pilot project for

the first six months, during which time it will be completely free to all riders.

“After the pilot project, the data we collect is going to be given to the region, and we will be reassessing that along with the region and the Township to see where we’re going to go from there,” said Fisher. “So hopefully it’s a success and we’ll be able to keep it carried on.”

While the region won’t provide any funding, if the pilot proves successful, it will look at extending the service through the rest of 2019, including the project in next year’s budget talks.

A small bus will circle Elmira at peak times during the day, dropping off passengers at a Grand River Transit bus stop where they can board the main bus and link to the transit

hub in Waterloo.

Kiwanis Transit sees the shuttle as a way to decrease demand on its door-todoor specialty transportation, not only linking to GRT route 21 but allowing people in Elmira to access local stops such as shopping or appointments “The community is pretty excited. We’re getting a lot of really great feedback, posters are going up and the signs will going up by next week, the last week of August,” said Cheryl Fisher, general manager of Kiwanis Transit.

HOW TO REACH US

The organization has added a new bus to its fleet for the Elmira route, which will run in a circle along the outer perimeter of town from Monday to Saturday.

The bus route is being added specifically to service those that live outside the core downtown areas near Arthur Street.

“This perimeter route is really focusing on outside the catchment area of route 21,” explained Fisher. “So people that have to walk that distance to get to the downtown or to the southend stores.”

The bus will feature 24 stops along its route, with the two main ones being the township office at Maple and Church streets on the north side of town, and the Foodland plaza on the south side. Rather than cut straight down the middle of town along Arthur Street, however, the bus will travel down Barnswallow Drive on the west side of town instead, and then back up Union Street along the east.

“It operates Monday to Saturday, and there’s just a bit of a split in the middle of the day. So there is a

Barbecue honours the man who put the Ray in Sun Rays VERONICA REINER

In memory of the inspiration behind the Elmira special hockey team, the Sun Rays, organizers hosted their second Raymond Dietrich Memorial Barbecue on Saturday at the Waterloo Rod and Gun Club. “[Raymond Dietrich] had Down syndrome growing up, and he passed away a number of years ago,” said Will Jameson, Dietrich’s nephew. “He was a huge sports fan but just never had an avenue to play the game on the ice. He was able to play street hockey and that with his brothers but never played on a team or that type of thing. So that’s sort of the motivation why we brought the team to Woolwich, and there’s huge support in Elmira and Woolwich area for community living and all that already, so it just made sense.

So the team was formed in his honour, hence the Sun Rays.”

The barbecue drew in some 200 attendees, compared to last years’ 86. It featured appetizers, pulled pork, chicken drumsticks, corn on the cob, raffle prizes, beer from Block 3 and Trail’s End breweries, and pies from Anna Mae’s. All of the proceeds raised from the event went towards the Sun Rays and the Elmira Association for Community Living.

Community responds to backpack challenge The Waterloo Regional Police have received an overwhelming amount of support from emergency service members and community members during its first-ever #BackpackChallenge, the service announced in a release.

The #BackpackChallenge

issued last month encouraged all emergency service workers and community members to purchase a new backpack, lunch bag or $25 gift card to be donated to children in need. The donations were delivered to the local Family & Children’s Services Foundations’ Back to School Assistance Program on Monday. They will then be distributed to children throughout Waterloo Region who are in need.

“We are incredibly pleased at the outpouring of support from members of the community and our fellow

emergency service workers,” said Bryan Larkin, chief of police. “The amount of donations we received exceeded all of our expectations and speaks volumes about the kindness of our community. Everyone who donated can be sure they are sending children back to class feeling confident and proud this school year.”

Family & Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region Foundation distributed approximately 600 backpacks to local children last year. This year, it’s expected to be the same amount.

GRH names new CEO Grand River Hospital has hired a new president and chief executive officer (CEO). Ron Gagnon takes over the post November 5.

“We conducted a national search guided by qualities and attributes recommended by our hospital community and many partners in Waterloo Region and Guelph-Wellington,” said board chair Janice Deganis in a release. “Ron Gagnon brings an impressive range

of talents, skills and demonstrated successes to our organization, and we welcome him to our community.”

Since 2006, Gagnon has been the president and CEO of the Sault Area Hospital (SAH), a large regional referral and community hospital. He has led SAH through several initiatives, including the development of a new hospital facility, completed on budget and opened early; seven years of surplus operating budgets; and advancements in quality of care, reduced wait times, and improvements in patient satisfaction;

“I am excited to join the inspired team at Grand River Hospital and to work with them to continue advancing exceptional care,” said Gagnon.

“Waterloo Region is at an exciting point in its health care evolution, and Grand River Hospital is uniquely positioned as a key collaborator and leader in the delivery of care, health education, research and innovation.

Gagnon replaces Malcolm Maxwell, who is retiring after 11 years of service as Grand River Hospital’s president and CEO and a career of health leadership spanning four provinces and territories.

Youth movement extends to Waterloo Regional Police brass for the day There’ll be a changing of the guard of sorts today (Thursday) at Waterloo Regional Police headquarters, as three young “recruits” take over for the chief and two deputy chiefs.

The new youthful executives were recruited during the police service’s first-ever Police Chief for a Day contest, which ran throughout the month of May. As part of Police Week in Ontario, students in Grade 5 to 7 were asked to submit a 500-word essay describing why they

think policing is important in our community.

Approximately 100 submissions were received from students across the region, with all offering great insight into community policing, police said in a release.

“We were overwhelmed by the response of the youth in our community and also impressed by the wealth of knowledge many of our youth displayed on policing issues in Waterloo Region,” said Chief Bryan Larkin. “We read through every submis-

sion and are incredibly proud of the thought and research that went into each one.”

The new officers will visit headquarters Thursday to meet with Larkin, tour the facility, check out the inside of a police cruiser, visit with the canine unit and interact with police officers. They will also take part in a press conference at police headquarters, located at 200 Maple Grove Road in Cambridge. During the press conference, they will read portions of their award-winning entries.

Not just anyone can participate; each bricklayer must be at the level of a journeyman. Levels of experience include apprentice, journeyman, and master when it comes to careers in the trades. They also work in teams for the competition.

“You have a labourer; every bricklayer brings their own tender, or labourer, they call it,” said Lyndon Brubacher, a bricklayer of six years from Elmira, who will be participating in the event this year. “And then you guys work as a team and see how many bricks you can get. But you have to bring all your mortar, and all your bricks, and stuff like that. It definitely helps to have a good labourer who knows what he’s doing.”

“They’ll go and surround the whole building with one layer or one wall, they’ll do all the starter course and then the main stuff,” added Garbutt. “And the top two masons will do that. And then the rest of the crew will come in and go to town on the wall as fast as they can. It’s to replicate a job site.”

“I’ve been a spectator at the event for a bunch of years now, so I thought it was time to enter,” said Brubacher. “There’s lots of things, even stuff for the kids; there’s lots of draws and raffle prizes, and all kinds of fun stuff. If you’re in the trade, they’ve got a lot of sales booths and free stuff – it’s good.

“They draw two or three TVs and a bunch of other

smaller prizes – that’s for the spectators. You can buy tickets and enter draws to win these things. There’s lots of stuff to do. There’s always tons of people there.”

Spec Mix Inc, which produces factory pre-blended cement-based building products for the construction industry, launched the competition in 2003.

This year’s event is set for September 5 at, appropriately enough, the school of trades and apprenticeship branch of Conestoga College at 108 University Ave. E. in Waterloo.

Polls show a shift in attitude about immigration CURRENT POLL NUMBERS CAPTURE a moment in time, but Canadians’ growing disenchantment with immigration and refugee numbers are likely part of a trend.

Concerns about dubious claimants at the border, a wave of refugees and wider issues of terrorism, coupled with longstanding economic woes, have certainly influenced the latest Angus Reid Institute findings. Half of Canadians now say immigration targets – 310,000 this year – are too high, up from 33 per cent who felt that way just four years ago. Today, less than a third agree levels are about right.

Over the last four decades in which the institute has been tracking Canadians’ attitudes to immigration, the level of support for cutting immigration levels has averaged about 25 per cent. The latest trend is sharply upwards, though it remains to be seen if impressions will eventually return to historic levels. That may be unlikely given that Ottawa is looking to boost immigration further still, with a target of 340,000 people by 2020.

Note, too, that attitudes are hardening even towards refugees and humanitarian cases. About 40 per cent of Canadians want the government to lower the number, with about a third wanting to maintain the status quo.

Chances are pretty good we’ll see additional backlash from the federal government’s plan to boost the number of immigrants and refugees coming into Canada. There’s already been a negative response to the Liberals loosening some of the requirements that newcomers be the ones most likely to contribute to the economy and society. There have been more family reunifications, fewer marketable skill prerequisites.

This comes at a cost, short- and long-term.

Once net contributors to the economy, immigrants have been an overall drain for decades now, the result of welfare state provisions that didn’t exist for previous waves of new arrivals. Combined with a faltering economy, the decline of the middle class and generally poor prospects for the future, the newcomers are unlikely to contribute in the way the once did, the ongoing trope of Canada having been built by immigrants.

There are direct costs that amount to tens of billions of dollars. Indirectly, higher immigration tends to suppress everyone’s wages, transferring some $3.5 billion in wealth to employers from employees each year.

Then there’s the issue of rising real estate prices, particularly in markets where immigrants are prone to form enclaves – think Toronto and Vancouver. That boosts house prices and keeps younger Canadians out of the market.

Increasingly, these enclaves can lead to cultural issues given the changing demographics of immigration in the last few decades. Certainly the inherent problems are exacerbated by today’s political climate, but in the longer-term there could be major conflicts of the type we see growing in Europe.

While Canada has done a better job of integrating newcomers into its population than have countries in Western Europe, many of the problems could easily surface here.

Canada’s immigration is the highest per capita level in the world. Government officials, however, can provide no good reason for doing so. We continue to hear that high immigration levels are needed to offset an aging population, but little about the unsustainable concept of growth.

If the trend reflected in the polls continues, changes will come for political reasons long before the practicalities are acknowledged.

It’s in you to give ... even if some require a little extra prompting to do so.

Re-education camps are part of China’s treatment of minorities WORLD AFFAIRS Two weeks ago Professor Gay McDougall, co-chair of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, alleged that up to a million people belonging to the Uygur and other Muslim minority groups in China’s northwestern province of Xinjiang have been detained in concentration camps to be ‘reeducated’ about religion.

Hu Lianhe, who shapes the Communist Party Central Committee’s policies on minorities, sternly denied it: “The argument that one million Uygurs are detained in re-education centres is completely untrue.”

He rather spoiled the effect of his denial, however, by telling the meeting that while China was not running a “deIslamization” program in Xinjiang, “those deceived by religious extremists ... shall be assisted by resettlement and re-education.”

Resettled where? In detention camps, perhaps?

And if not a million, then how many? Half a million?

Two million? The staterun Global Times then defended the detention camps that do not exist by claiming that Xinjiang had narrowly escaped a descent into mass violence and chaos.

“It is because of the Party’s leadership, a powerful China, and the courage of local officials that Xinjiang has been pulled back from the verge of massive turmoil. It has avoided the fate of becoming ‘China’s Syria’ or ‘China’s Libya’.”

That is not a denial of the policy; it’s a justification of it.

You can’t have it both ways: China is detaining and ‘reprogramming’ Muslims in Xinjiang (we don’t say ‘brainwashing’ any more) on a very large scale. It is doing so because it fears that the sporadic terrorist attacks that have hit cities in Xingjiang and even China proper may escalate as Islamic State, defeated in Syria and Iraq, seeks to build support in other regions of the Muslim world.

Religion is not the root cause of Uighur unhappiness with Chinese rule; it is the deliberate effort to submerge their identity by settling millions of Han Chinese (the ethnic group who make up more than 90 per cent of China’s population) in the province that was once known as ‘Chinese Turkestan.’

Xinjiang wasn’t even Chinese until the 1870s, when the Qing dynasty finally nailed down Chinese control over a crossroads region (part of the old Silk Road) that had been ruled by more than a dozen different mini-empires in the previous millennium.

It fell out of Chinese control again in the civil war of the 1930s and 40s, becoming an independent ‘East Turkestan’ republic backed by the Soviet Union. When the victorious Chinese Communist army took back control in 1950, 73 per cent of the population were Uygurs, with smaller Muslim ethnic groups like Kazakhs and Kirghiz accounting for perhaps another six or seven per cent.

Only one-fifth of Xinjiang’s population was

Han Chinese in 1950; today almost half is. Han immigration was spontaneous in the early days, but in recent decades the Communist regime has encouraged and even subsidised it, in a deliberate attempt to create a loyal majority in the province.

Muslim Xinjiang, like its neighbour to the south, Buddhist Tibet, is suspect because its religion gives it an alternative, ‘foreign’ loyalty.

As in Tibet, this attempt to make the population more ‘Chinese’ only stimulated resentment and resistance among the former majority population, and the first anti-Chinese violence in Xinjiang began in the late 1990s. Almost 200 people, mostly Han Chinese, were killed in ethnic riots in Urumqi, the capital, in 2009, and since then there have been numerous knife, bomb and vehicle attacks in Xinjiang and in China proper.

Despite much fuss and even more money, the suburbs still rule the roost EDITOR'S NOTES From limiting growth and encouraging intensification, from cycling lanes to an LRT boondoggle, we’re going to see an increasing number of projects designed to make Waterloo Region an idealized version of a hip city, a happening place filled with funky high-tech businesses and a vibrant cultural life. In this dream, happy people get around by foot, bicycle or public transit, happily enjoying a new, happy way of life.

It’s an unlikely future, but one municipal officials are happy to spend your money on.

The reality is that the region, like pretty much every urban area, is seeing most of its growth in the suburbs, despite the very visible – i.e. they’re eyesores – highrise developments. The ongoing suburbanization is especially true of mid-size cities (50,000 to 500,000 people) such as those found in Wa-

terloo Region, and the kind that are home to some 45 per cent of Canadians.

A new study led by Queen’s University urban planning professor David Gordon shows the suburbanization trend is not only continuing, but growing.

“Many people over-estimate the importance of the highly visible downtown cores and underestimate the vast growth happening in the suburban edges of our metropolitan regions.

The population in lowdensity auto suburbs and exurbs is still growing five times faster than innercities and inner-suburbs across Canada. Despite their inner-city condo booms, even the Toronto and Vancouver metropolitan areas saw 3.4 and 2.4 times as much population growth in auto suburbs and exurbs compared to active cores and transit suburbs,” the new report finds.

“Canada is a suburban nation and its population became more suburban from 2006–2016, despite the planning policies of most metropolitan areas.”

Waterloo Region may think it can buck the trend,

of Toronto and its ilk. Curbing growth, however, is not on the menu.

With walking and cycling, who isn’t captivated by the street life of European centres? It’s great to see people going about their daily business under their own steam. We lack the beautiful old architecture, public spaces and way of life, but on we go.

As for transit, it’s fast and convenient – and sometimes even inexpensive – in other parts of the world. Why not here? Never mind the geographical distances, car culture and premium placed on our time ... we’ll plough ahead in a small, makeshift way, spending much in return for little.

OK, none of that pessimism is on display at the official level.

The region is pressing forward with its transit scheme.

The cities are looking at adding bike lanes.

More highrise buildings are being erected.

Tens of millions are being poured into downtown redevelopment.

This is all driven by an

optimism that these moves will bring change. Positive change. Hopefully, that is the case.

Happening, walkable, livable cities would be ideal.

All of this is predicated on ever-more growth, despite the fact constant growth – the Ponzi scheme that is our economy – is not sustainable. It also depends on separating taxpayers from even more of their money, despite spending that outstrips economic growth (there’s that word again) and people’s incomes. Most troubling, it depends on people changing their behaviours in large enough numbers to make any of it work.

The ideal of so-called compact communities puts me in mind of Europe, where densities are higher and people live within an easy walk or bike ride of most of the amenities of daily living. Because most communities developed before the advent of the automobile, they’re very much people-centric as opposed to the car-centered towns and cities of North America.

People actually do walk and cycle as a means of transportation, not just recreation. Public transit is convenient and well used.

In short, the antithesis of how we do things here.

Living there, you can quite easily do without a car.

Of course, vehicles are more expensive, gas prices astronomical and parking spaces limited, putting a real damper on the kind of automobile enthusiasm seen in North America.

In all the talk of more human-scale communities, there’s no mention of aesthetics. For me, that’s the make-it-or-break-it part of the equation: our ugly built environments foster neither pride of place nor a desire to be out on foot, interacting with the place where we live something to enjoy in its own right. It’s going to take a monumental effort at creating something better to get us out of the suburban model: Shifting from our box of a house to our box of a car to the box where we shop and the box where we work. but the numbers say otherwise: 72 per cent of those living in the KitchenerWateloo-Cambridge census metropolitan area (CMA, as used by Statistics Canada) live in what’s called the “auto suburb,” with just 11 per cent in the so-called “active core” area of the cities.

Similar numbers can be found in other Canadian cities, with the divide growing in favour of the burbs.

Still, the focus – and the money – is on countering the trend, while growth rolls on unabated by officials at the municipal, provincial and federal levels, who are determined to cram down our collective throats all of the egregious problems related to those policies.

When it comes to planning policies, some of the goals are admirable, at least in part.

Who wouldn’t like a vibrant cultural scene, with great entertainment options and a real nightlife in the vein of, say, Montreal or Vancouver? Without, of course, the congestion and demographic nightmares

The fact is that car ownership is seen as essential in most communities – few North American cities, such as New York, actually make car ownership more expensive and less convenient than doing without an automobile.

And once someone is invested in a car, most of the costs such as monthly payments and insurance are fixed whether it’s sitting in the driveway or rolling through town. Transit is rarely faster, so people take their cars. While people tend to underestimate the cost of operating their vehicles – gas, wear and tear and the like – they still see it as cheaper than using transit.

The study released this week indicated that’s not going to change in any appreciable timeframe.

Runners need plenty of training to put the endurance in ENDURrun VERONICA REINER An ultimate test of endurance, this year’s 16th annual ENDURrun aims to find the best overall runner of all terrain types.

This year’s event wrapped up last weekend, with Robert Brouillette claiming top spot in the men’s category for the fourth straight year. Aidan Rutherford was second, while Christian Belair was third. In the women’s category, Valery Hobson was the winner, followed by Robyn Collins and Vicki Zandbergen.

Racers competing in the event should train for an entire year to fully prepare for the seven-stage, 160 km challenge, says race director Lloyd Schmidt.

That’s what’s needed to succeed at the multi-stage event over the course of a week (stage 1 – halfmarathon, stage 2 – 15 km time trial, stage 3 – 30 km trail run, stage 4 – 10 mile [16 km] hill run, stage 5 – 25.6 km alpine run, stage 6 – 10 km time trial, stage 7 – marathon).

“We’d like to get people to commit to the event early, like a year in advance,

so that they can properly train for it,” explained Schmidt. “Because we’ve had instances where people didn’t train for it, and it becomes a really difficult event to complete.

If they commit to it and they prepare for it all year in advance, and they do the hills and the trails and back runs and everything, they can get through it.”

But how does one prepare to run 160 km in one week, especially within a varied time limit for each course?

“I run six days a week and one double run,” said event participant of two previous years, Karen Batsford. “You have to get used to running on tired legs.

It’s amazing what your body can do. You wake in the a.m. barely able to walk, and you wonder ‘how am I going to run a marathon today?’

It shows how the mind plays a role also.”

“Because it’s such a unique multi-stage race and different running conditions every day, I try to cover all of this in my training,” added Deirdre Large, event participant. “I incorporate back-to-back long runs to get used to running on tired legs. So a 30 km run Saturday followed by a 20

Every year, right about this time, I have a look through my freezer to gauge the amount of game meat I’ve got left from last season. Usually, by the end of August, we’re just about out.

This is perfect because that and some fish will get us through until hunting season starts and the wild meat collection begins anew.

As I was doing freezer inventory, I noticed we had a couple of wood ducks left, as well as one package of venison and two packages containing the meat of six eastern gray squirrels in total.

I would have cried out in joy, but for some inexplicable reason, Jenn does not like squirrel meat like normal people do.

She dislikes the thought of it so much that I end up cooking it when she visits her sister or dad. In fact, the mere mention of cooking it will cause her to visit her sister or dad.

Despite this, it occurred to me that squirrel season starts again in less than a month. So I thought I

had better use what’s left to clear the way for some fresh stuff. Thought processes like these are why Jenn never asks what I’m thinking.

So I got out my pressure cooker and pressure canned those squirrels.

This is something I typically do with some cuts of venison. Pressure canning breaks down tough cuts of

meat and tenderizes it so that it melts in your mouth.

Canned venison is great on sandwiches or in stews.

That’s when I figured, why not squirrel?

For me, this was my E=MC2 moment.

I’m pleased to say it turned out great and for the next little while I enjoyed squirrel on a bun every second day at lunch – which Jenn, along with the local

squirrel population, found a little disconcerting.

That’s normal however.

My experience is that the minute I tell some people I enjoy a good feed of squirrel, they nod politely and then retch.

When you think of it, however, that’s unfair.

Squirrels consume good food: corn, apples, acorns, beech nuts and mushrooms to name a few. There’s no

reason they should taste anything but good. And they do.

Also, let’s be clear. Those same people who retch at squirrel often enjoy tofurkey.

The squirrel, which I canned with beef broth and steak spice, was tender and tasted very much like venison roast, which is, let me just point out, the exact opposite of tofurkey. There were no ill effects either,

other than a strange urge to climb trees, hang out at birdfeeders and buy nuts at the grocery store.

Right now, many of you are probably mulling over the one question that troubles everyone, so I’ll answer it now – it takes three deboned squirrels to fill up one 500 ml jar. This means since the legal possession limit for squirrel is 15, you’ll need to have five 500 ml

jars ready to go for midSeptember. There. Now you can sleep at night.

I was mentioning this to Jenn the other day just before I finally found my 500 ml jars in the darkest corner of the basement, under a pile of cardboard, tucked deep behind the furnace oil tank.

I must be getting old. For the life of me, I don’t remember putting them there.

WYSC sees good response to its adult recreational soccer league, which is back for a second year VERONICA REINER After a successful run last year, the fall adult house league at the Woolwich Youth Soccer Club is on again for 2018. Players of all experience levels are participating in this co-ed league, with registration closing September 1.

“We already have quite a few people from last year already registered,” explained Brendan Lowther, chair of the club’s recreational committee. “As of right now, we’re about halfway to our registration goal.”

The target is a total of 64 registrants, the same amount as last year, to form four full soccer teams.

Registrants must be at least 18 years of age.

“It’s a fun way to stay active,” said Merrin Macrae, a participant in last years’ adult soccer league who

will be playing again this year. “You don’t have to have played varsity soccer in order to join the team.

It’s a mixed league, which means we have people at all sorts of different levels and we have both males and females. It’s a fun way to stay active, to get outside, and also to meet other people.”

They organize the teams according to skill level to keep the teams as fair as possible. Woolwich Youth Soccer encourages everyone to come out, whether participants have prior experience playing the sport or not.

“It’s not made to be a majorly competitive environment; we sort of encourage everyone of all abilities to be able to attend and play,” said Lowther. “On our registration form we have a way for people to self-select their ability, so if you select

A-level, it means you play a lot and have lots of experience, all the way down to D-level players, those who have never played before.

And then when we make the teams, we make them so that they’re as even as we can, based on that selfselection.”

There are 16 people on a full team. When organizing the teams, the club is sure to accommodate special requests.

“At the same time, we do accept the traditional friend requests,” said Lowther. “And the spouse requests. You don’t have to request your spouse; we assume you want them on your team, but you could also let us know if that’s not the case. Sometimes people want to compete against each other, and that’s fun.”

The league draws in players from all over the area, outside of Elmira and even outside Waterloo Region.

Lowther attributes this to being one of the few soccer

leagues in the area that is just for fun.

“We do get a lot of people from a variety of areas; so we get people from Waterloo, a few from Elmira, but even people from just outside the area,” said Lowther. “So we get people from Drayton, Fergus, Elora, places like that. It’s pretty cool. We see different kinds of people from all over.

“It’s unbelievable actually. We get people from quite a ways out, and I’m surprised that people will drive in for like 40 minutes, from wherever they are, up north kind of thing.

Every time I go to the registration, it’s a surprise, some of the addresses, to me.”

The cost to register is $65. The first game will be September 9, and the league will continue for seven weeks (excluding Thanksgiving weekend) until October 28. Games take place Sundays at Park Manor PS fields in Elmira at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

If they don’t, then they’re out. That amount depends on the distance and terrain, today’s race was 10k has an hour and 15-minute time limit.”

“Everyone struggles at times,” added Batsford.

“Injuries are why people drop out or didn’t make cut off. I ran with a severely sprained ankle. Most people I found pushed through injuries. One lost all their toenails just to finish, to say they finished.

All the runners are so motivating, whether they are the leaders of the race or back of the pack. All are inspiring and do it for

themselves.”

Last week’s race took participants through various parts of the Waterloo Region. For example, the August 14 run took runners on a 30-km trek starting at Bechtel Park in Waterloo.

The majority of events ran through the Conestogo area.

“Each stage is totally different, and we try to run as much of the Waterloo Region as possible,” said Schmidt. “[Saturday’s] stage is from Elmira to Conestogo; it’s very, very flat. So compared to Chicopee, which was grass and trails and hills, tomorrow is flat roads. It’s quite a dramatic change in terrain.

And that’s what we like to do; make sure runners run every kind of discipline.”

ENDURrun also features a charity of choice program, where chosen runners select a charity and raise over a $1,000 for it so that they can have their entry fee refunded.

“But we limit that to two people,” said Schmidt.

“Because if we returned everybody’s entry fee, we wouldn’t have any money left. This year was actually a good year; one person raised almost $10,000.

That’s fantastic. Most people raise $1,000 or $1,500, but [he] went way above and beyond for his charity, Nutrition for Kids.”

There is also prize money for winners of the event, as well as a gold jersey that marks the leading runner.

The largest such outdoor event in the country, the show is giving businesses both local and distant the opportunity to reach new markets and promote their wares.

It’s an opportunity, too, for local farmers to see the latest the industry has to offer, as well pick tips on best farm practices.

“We have 750 agriculture exhibitors who are bringing farm equipment, crop input, genetics, agriculture technology, agro-business services like financial services and insurance, livestock equipment, live animals in some cases,” said COFS spokesperson Amanda Macfarlane.

“And they’re bringing that to the show to get in front of farmers who are looking for products or services for their farm.”

For local business Floradale Feed Mill Ltd., which produces formulated farm animal feeds, the show is an opportunity to stay visible with farmers and fellow industry members.

Waiting for an earlymorning oil change last week, my wife and I killed some time with a breakfast visit to the nearest fast-food restaurant, which happened to be A&W. A&W is not my first choice. I believe its nohormones, no-steroids campaign makes the entire Canadian beef sector look suspicious, a sector that’s actually renowned for quality and safety.

Canada has a thorough, highly regulated meat inspection system. Implying farmers who do not supply meat to the A&W chain are operating outside the system is wrong.

I’m not alone. The chain has developed a deeply ingrained rural cadre of haters. In fact, many people in the farming sector will be disappointed that I gave A&W a nickel.

But within walking distance of my oil change, choices were limited.

Before ordering breakfast though, I was struck by a hastily constructed sign inside, illustrated with a frowning emoji, proclaiming that A&W’s Beyond Meat veggie burgROBERTS | 12

“Our Beyond Meat Burgers are so popular, we have temporarily SOLD OUT!” the sign announced. It also promised more stock was on the way.

I’ve never had a Beyond Meat burger. My wife once tried one and said it was similar to a beef burger, except texture-wise, it didn’t hold together as well. The Toronto Star restaurant critic drooled over its ingredients – mung beans, brown rice, peas, sunflowers, potatoes, halved pomegranates and

cracked coconuts – saying it tasted “Just. Right.”

Publically, the meat industry says everyone should have access to alternatives. But privately, it reels against the Beyond Meat burger’s popularity, and other unconventional alternatives. It’s paying attention to their success, even though sales of beef, Beyond Meat’s model, are not suffering and beef consumption in Canada is up for the second year in a row.

Still, there’s a sense that traditional meat production is falling behind as

what’s called flexitarianism rises, that’s it’s not sporting shiny new products like the Beyond Meat burger, and that it must take measures to regain public trust.

That’s especially true among young people. Research from the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity shows only two-thirds of millennials rate farmers as “believable” when it comes to the environment, compared to 70 per cent of the overall population. That’s a red flag, given farmers’ traditionally high standing among

the public, and the fact that millennials are a key purchasing demographic.

In some areas, the meat sector is pushing back.

For example, it’s trying to take action against the use of the word “meat” for animal-based protein developed in a lab. That’s understandable – in generic packaging, cultured meat might look similar to some kinds of conventional meat, and send consumers into a tailspin.

However – and this is hard for the meat sector to accept – we may be entering a period in which

some people consider radical alternatives such as cultured meat desirable. Traditional slaughter is avoided with cultured meat, and to some, slaughter is simply unacceptable.

And despite documented nutritional benefits of eating lean meat, in the UK, 71 per cent of consumers deem plant proteins to be healthier than their animal-based counterparts.

Some excellent examples of efforts to show beef production is sustainable – and in fact, helpful – ex-

ist in our own country.

In Manitoba, farmers are involved in a program that shows how cattle grazing is helping preserve endangered bird species. In Ontario, crop and livestock farmers take part in a species-at-risk program to make parts of their property available for wildlife habitat.

Such stories must be told widely and repeatedly to help Canadians understand livestock production’s role, and emphasize the safe, wholesome and nutritious aspect of meat produced here in Canada.

“This year there’s a tillage demonstration focusing on tackling cornstalks, as well as a variable rate seeding demonstration.

And then brand new is going to be the Farmer’s Edge knowledge tent. So this is an educational speaker series for farmers,” she said.

“A lot of what we showcase at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show is best seen live in the field, but there are some things you can’t see in a field that are still important to help run a farm, so that’s what the purpose of this knowledge tent area is.”

This year’s keynote address will come from Elaine Froese, a professional speaker, writer and

coach who specializes in family farms. Froese will be giving a talk on fairness in farm transition, and succession planning – an ever-important consideration for any family-run business.

“Farms tend to be family businesses that are multi-generations working together, which is a great thing, but it can also present a lot of challenges. So Elaine Froese is an expert in succession planning and farm transition and she will be joining us this year,” said Macfarlane.

Also to feature at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show is a demonstration by the Ontario Ministry of Food and Agriculture on electro-

static spraying. The method uses electric charges to help water adhere to plant tissue and is touted with reducing water consumption while increasing coverage. There will be demonstrations on livestock handling, health and wellness seminars, and a new innovation showcase which presents the latest technology available for the farm.

Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show will be run September 11-13 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Canada’s Outdoor Park in Woodstock. Tickets are purchasable at the gate, cash only, and are $20 for adults, and $10 for youth (13- to 17-years-old), and free for children under 13.

Consumer research contributes to Ontario’s apple cider strategy Ontario consumers are thirsty for more hard apple cider, and the province’s apple sector is poised to deliver. But first, researchers are profiling consumer preference to be sure the industry serves up cider that hits the spot.

The project developed in response to research needs identified in the 2016 Cider Research and Innovation Strategy is a partnership with the Ontario Craft Cider Association and the Ontario Apple Growers.

The strategy aims to see seven million litres of Ontario craft cider come to market by 2020.

“Our work is about developing a better understanding of who the cider consumer is, and the sensory, flavour and taste profiles they’re looking for in a cider,” says Amy Bowen, research director, consumer insights at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland).

Bowen used Vineland’s trained sensory panel to develop a lexicon of 22 sensory attributes to describe taste, aroma, flavour, mouthfeel and colour of hard apple ciders. The same panel then applied those attributes to 50 cider brands currently available to consumers through the LCBO and Ontario cideries.

Research is helping with the development of cider using 100 per cent Ontario apples.

Next, 228 cider-drinking consumers rated their liking for a subset of those 50 ciders, and described each one using a provided list of terms. They also completed a questionnaire about consumption and purchase habits.

“We identified two main segments of consumers, one that was driven by sweet, fruit-forward flavour profiles, and another panel that was driven by less sweet, balanced, and more complex flavours,” Bowen says.

She notes there are

significant differences in flavour and ingredients in domestic and imported ciders available to consumers through the LCBO. Craft ciders are made from 100 per cent Ontario apples, while others are made in Canada using apple concentrate, and some imported ciders contain little fruit juice at all (less than 20 per cent).

Interestingly, two of three top-rated ciders tasted by study participants are not among the top fiveselling cider brands at the LCBO.

“We want to develop ciders using 100 per cent Ontario apples that meet a sensory profile that consumers respond to,” she says. “If someone is looking for an apple cider, and they want a dry one or a sweet one, understanding those profiles allows us to be flexible in using mixes of apples that are well adapted to our industry.”

But if the industry is going to meet its growth targets, an additional 16,000 tonnes of apples – or 1.45 million trees – will be required. Work is underway

to determine which apple varieties meet the climate, yield and taste profiles ideal to growing the cider industry.

“We need to think strategically,” Bowen says. “It’s a big, long-term investment to put an apple orchard in the ground. There’s a huge opportunity to look at how the apple variety mix aligns and meets the needs of this growing industry, to keep it profitable and flavourful.”

Ontario research leads to more sustainable lawns

Michael Brownbridge has great respect for the lowly lawn.

For starters, grass has remarkable survival skills.

During droughts, those brown blades that look dead have simply gone dormant until the next generous rainfall returns them to resplendent green.

Lawns kick out moisture on hot days which cools urban environments.

They also act like sponges that hold moisture after heavy rains and release it slowly to benefit trees and other plants growing nearby.

Then there are all the pollutants grass traps.

“It’s one of the most phenomenal plants on the planet,” Brownbridge said.

their foils. That includes the hairy chinch bug and European chafer (white grub) for grass.

Fortunately, Brownbridge, the research director of horticultural production systems at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, has come up with ways to keep the grass greener – and pest-free – on all sides of the fence.

The roots of his research go back seven years to the advent of the provincial cosmetic pesticide ban and the turf industry’s search for alternative pest management products.

Brownbridge was able to determine that new, nontoxic tools, such as nematodes and biocontrols, worked but not necessarily at the level industry needed to keep grass in peak form. So he started

investigating grass varieties that could better stand up to pests and our changing environment.

Brownbridge found new fescues and ryegrasses that have root systems that access moisture and nutrients in soil more efficiently, and require less water to thrive, yet still look as good as traditional Kentucky bluegrass.

Better still, some new varieties contain microbes called endophytes that produce waste that’s toxic or unpalatable to the hairy chinch and white grub.

The endophytes also make grass more robust during times of stress, like drought.

The grasses don’t have to be perfect at fending off pests, either, he noted.

They just have to reduce infestations and let existing pest management practices take care of the

rest; for example, Brownbridge and his team found applying certain species of nematode in early fall rather than spring cut white grub infestations by in half.

Vineland is currently testing these new grass varieties at sod farms in

Hamilton and Wainfleet.

Lawns – even existing ones – can also be seeded with these new quickgrowing varieties.

“We reckon if you have 20 per cent-plus of these grasses in your lawn, you’ll get some of these insect deterrents,” he said.

The greatest benefit of Brownbridge’s research isn’t a verdant yard, however. It’s turf that requires fewer inputs, making it more sustainable.

“It’s a living, breathing, functioning piece of the environment that if we take a bit of a different

look at it and maintain it in the right way – and I’m not saying we need a lot of inputs – it can become an important part of our environment,” he said.

Butterflies are the inspiration for a day full of art Various art forms come together for The Art of Butterflies, a one-day exhibit Aug. 25 at Guelph’s Silence Sounds

VERONICA REINER The Art of Butterflies exhibit at Silence Sounds in Guelph is collaborating with the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory and artist nik harron to create a unique experience for every audience member. This will be done through various art forms, all inspired by butterflies.

“I think it’s going to be a really unique opportunity to have a day where you can engage with pretty much every part of your brain,” said Scarlett Raczycki, executive director at Silence Sounds. “Whether it’s auditory, or kinesthetic, working with the crafts and the origami; scientific, learning about the butterflies, so it’s going to be this really weird, amazing, unique experience where you get to kind of bounce around from all those different categories.

It all comes down to the butterfly, and how many different ways you can take one form of inspiration.”

Harron’s contribution

to the event is MONARCH, a butterflyshaped physical synthesizer, as well as an interpretive computer visualization that visually mimics the sounds played by the instrument. MONARCH is comprised of 38 magnetically-tunable oscillators, four kalimba elements, six strings, two removable steel picks, and a playable reverb spring.

“It was deeply influenced by the Georgian composer Koka Nikoladze,” explained Harron, who constructed the instrument over eight months. “Koka made a little soundtrack box for a movie that he scored that was composed of springs and wires and a resonant spring on the inside to give it some reverb.

Seeing it, it struck me that instruments don’t have to be these pre-designed things. They can just be sort of organic and unique, so I decided, ‘I’m going to build

one.’”

Harron hopes that the interactive art will engage the audience and give a novel experience, in a way that other media might not.

“I’m interested in a kind of interaction that you

generally don’t get with a medium like painting,” said Harron. “Where you’re isolated in your studio, and you spend so much time making this thing, and you hang it on a wall, and people are afraid to touch it, and if they have something to say about it, they don’t want to say the wrong thing. And so they’re very,

very quiet. But if you build an interactive exhibit, they get to play. Whether it’s adults or children, hearing the sound of laughter, and being able to see them explore something new and novel... it’s a very rewarding experience.”

In addition to MONARCH, there will also be informative presentations by the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory regarding the migration of monarchs and gardening pollinators. The organization is also bringing in live monarchs and tropical butterflies.

In conjunction with the event, there is a juried art exhibition. Visual artists had the opportunity to submit butterfly-themed artwork until August 10 that will be presented at the event. While Silence Sounds received plenty of submissions, they had to narrow down the number of paintings due to space limitations.

“We ended up selecting

19 pieces. It was complicated; it took us a long time to pare down. We kept having to say, ‘we don’t have that much wall space,’” said Raczycki with a laugh. “We have a whole wall being used for the projections. I think even with 19, it’s going to be pushing it a little bit. We did get a lot of really amazing stuff, and a huge range too, which is really exciting. We have everything from abstract expressionism to photography to watercolours.”

There are activities for the whole family, including a children’s art exhibition where youth under 18 are invited to create a work of art inspired by these live, caged butterflies. Other activities include constructing butterfly mobiles at 11:30 a.m., butterfly magnets at 1:15 p.m., and creating butterfly origami at 3 p.m.

The Art of Butterflies will take place at Silence Sounds, 46 Essex St. in Guelph on August 25.

The event is free of charge.

Florence was the wife of the late Aaron Wideman (1978). Mother of Elaine (Alvin) Hershberger, Beulah (Dr. Mel) Gerber, Elroy (Ruby) Wideman, Reta (Rudy) Derksen, Eva (Norm) Woodard, Clifford Wideman, Maynard (Sue) Wideman, Stewart (Diane) Wideman, and Marilyn Wideman. Grandmother of 26 grandchildren and their spouses/ partners, 48 great-grandchildren, and many great-great-grandchildren. Also survived by her sisters and brother, Viola Wallace, Dr. Ellen Moyer, Laura Shantz, and Abner (Shirley) Martin, and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her parents Annanias and Susanna (Steckle) Martin, daughter Alice (Robert) Martin, daughter-in-law Joanne Wideman, grandchildren Christopher Wideman and Rodney Martin, brothers Vernon, Nelson, Lloyd (Gladys) Martin, sister Almeda, and brothers-in-law George Wallace, Carson Moyer, Milo Shantz, and all of her Wideman in-laws. Florence was a very active member of the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church and was an avid quilter, gardener, and scrabble player. She also enjoyed the farm at Wagner’s Corners, but most important to her was her family. The family will receive their relatives and friends on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira, and on Thursday, August 23, 2018, from 1 p.m. until time of funeral service at 2 p.m. at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church.

Interment to follow in the St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery. In Florence’s memory, donations to the Mennonite Central Committee or House of Friendship would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

Township looks to showcase local artistic talent Artists of Woolwich Gallery to be housed at the municipal building, with a launch gala set for Sept. 13

Putting all that fresh corn to a sweet use

FAISAL ALI There is a surfeit of artistic talent right here in the townships, evident through such events as the local Art in the Park and the Kissing Bridge Trail Studio Tour. But often, that local talent can be overshadowed by the larger scene in the neighbouring cities.

Hoping to give local creators another platform to shine on, the Township of Woolwich has launched an the Artists of Woolwich Gallery at its administration offices in Elmira. The gallery, which has already begun to take shape, will have an official unveiling next month with a special reception event.

“The idea came together because as an organization, we really feel that it’s important to support all facets of our economy, which includes our arts and culture and the creative economy,” said Raj Sian, the economic development and tourism officer with the township.

“We wanted to be able to [support] the artists of Woolwich, of which there are many different types,” added Sian.

“There’s paintings, there’s quilts, there’s pottery, there’s jewelry.

There’s a whole bunch of different mediums that we have available in Woolwich from our local artists, that we wanted them to be

For Marilyn Farquhar, one of the artists being featured in township’s gallery, the medium of choice is threads and stitches.

“I’m in quilting,” she explained. “I would say I’m a modern and contemporary quilter.”

Farquhar typically designs her own pattern

arrangements using a combination of high-tech software and good oldfashioned grit.

Farquhar has already established herself beyond the boundaries of the township as an artists, doing some commission quilt work as well as providing lectures and participating in trunk shows all over. However, she’s excited about the oppor-

tunity to showcase her talents at home as well.

“I think it’s really good for some artists that don’t have a lot of venues to get their work out there. In my particular case, my work is getting out there now on an international stage.

It was â&#x20AC;&#x153;stupefying,â&#x20AC;? something that â&#x20AC;&#x153;stops your thought.â&#x20AC;? What was IT, and is there a name for this overpowering feeling?

A. The words were those of NASA astronaut Chris Hadfield when he stepped out of the International Space Station for his first spacewalk and gazed upon his home planet, says Jo Marchant in â&#x20AC;&#x153;New Scientistâ&#x20AC;? magazine. The feeling he experienced is awe, first defined in 2003 by

pioneering awe researcher Dacher Keltner and Jonathon Haidt as â&#x20AC;&#x153;the feeling we get when confronted by something vast that transcends our frame of reference and that we struggle to understand.â&#x20AC;?

McKee is also volunteering her time to help the gallery curate new contributions from other local artists.

“I was very happy because I’ve been waiting for this for quite a while, that the township would put a little more into the arts,” she said.

For McKee, painting is a hobby, and her works feature lush, colourful scenes and lively portraits.

The gallery will feature

a rotating roster of exhibits, with different artists and artworks being hosted every three months. Anyone living in the township may apply to have their works included in the gallery in upcoming months, says Sian.

“We’re planning to have about four different artist showcases every year, so one each quarter. We have a working committee of artists, volunteers, that are local to the community who are going to be in-taking submissions,” she said.

“It’s really an opportunity to ensure that any artist in Woolwich has an opportunity to showcase their piece.”

Those interested in seeing their works displayed in future galleries are encouraged to reach out to the township.

“One of the key goals of the next showcase, entitled ‘Dreams’, is to focus on children’s artwork as well. And so we have reached out to some of the local schools and daycare centres to ask if there’s any type of work that they

would like to submit on behalf of their classrooms, or on behalf of their children in their classrooms,” said Sian.

The Artists of Woolwich Gallery reception will be held on September 13, between 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the township administration office, 24 Church St. W. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with some of the local artists during the reception; however the gallery will be open to the public anytime during regular business hours as well.

Marilyn Farquhar was one of the featured artists at the St. Jacobs Quilt and Fibre Art Festival in May, and regularly writes and lectures on the finer points of quilting.

Caramelized Corn with Sage and Onion 2 Tbsp. butter 1 onion, chopped 4 cups sweet corn kernels (4 to 5 ears) 1/2 cup sweet red pepper 1 green onion, chopped 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh sage or 1/2 tsp. dried sage 1/2 cup light cream 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper

In large non-stick skillet, heat butter over mediumhigh heat. Add onion; stirfry for 2 to 3 minutes or until softened.

Add corn and red pepper; cook, stirring frequently, for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned.

Stir in green onion, sage, cream, salt and pepper; cook until heated through, about 2 minutes.

Dish out while warm.

-ization that has occurred in this part of the country since I was younger,” said Barber. “I don’t think people realize how much more forest and green there is, than there was even 40, 50 years ago. Certainly more than there was in the early 20th century when it was all pretty well disastrous and no one would ever really spend any time in southern Ontario, certainly not on recreational grounds. Now, I think it’s really become that because of a lot of renaturalization, also more money revival of some of these small places. St. Jacobs is a perfect example.”

Another location mentioned in the book that local readers can easily find is the West Montrose Covered Bridge, the last wooden covered bridge in Ontario and the oldest such bridge in Canada. Construction of the bridge began in 1880. The bridge gets approximately 50,000 visitors a year, said village resident Tony Dowling, a member of the BridgeKeepers group.

“It’s not just a geographical place, it’s an experience,” said Dowling. “It’s a really special place, like a living museum.”

Waterloo spokesman Bryan Stortz, the filming of the 2017 film ‘It’ at the bridge only further contributed to its appeal as a tourist destination.

“I used to get the calls for filming, and with ‘It,’ because it’s a big Hollywood company, I just said ‘fine, talk to the legal department. They’ll do a legal agreement,’” explained Stortz. “It was really slick, they just went in and filmed it, and nobody even knew they were there. That’s why they’re a big movie company, I guess. I understand it did give the bridge a bit of profile.”

More local locations that the book explores include the Mennonite Story Interpretative Centre, the St. Jacobs horse-drawn tours, and the heritage rail. Barber’s book also touches

on attractions in Niagara Falls, Collingwood and Blue Mountain, Peterborough, Guelph and Elora.

“I wanted to showcase recreational opportunity, the greenbelt in general ... the borders of the greenbelt, that area, I think it’s been overlooked,” said Barber.

“People automatically go north to cottage country.

There’s a lot more to be said and seen and done a lot closer to the city. And I wanted to bring that out.”

The book advertises itself as a quick-reference tool to make the most out of one’s day off, noting the locations highlighted are affordable, close by, and do not require much planning to reach. All that is needed is the willingness to drive out to see the beautiful landmarks in Ontario.
