WRPS stepping up visibility in the townships Community policing will again be focus of rural operations STEVE KANNON Restructuring of police services in the region’s rural area is an ongoing process aimed at increasing visibility and decreasing emergency response times, say Waterloo Regional Police officials. While not planning to resume regular office times at the Elmira and New Hamburg detachments, police have assigned a sergeant on a permanent basis to look after the rural areas. Sgt. Kelly Gibson was joined by police brass in explaining the changes to Woolwich councillors meeting Tuesday night. Daryl Goetz, acting superintendent of the North Division detachment, said the changes are part of a restructuring that got underway in 2016. The goal is to make police more visible, taking a more proactive approach to policing the townships, he noted. That should help address areas of increased crime statistics in evidence this year, he suggested. So far this year, break-ins to residential and commercial properties are up substantially compared to five-year averages: 135 year-to-date versus the five-year average of 89 for residential break-and-enters, and 83 versus 42 on the commercial side. Former foundry site now called home First tenants move into new MennoHomes apartment building in Elmira FAISAL ALI After a tremendous amount of hard work and community input, the affordable and accessible apartment project being headed by MennoHomes saw its first tenants move into the Elmira building Wednesday. The building, located at Church Street and Memorial Avenue, has been dubbed “The Foundry” by MennoHomes, in recognition of the Procast metal casting building that had historically stood at the site. The project is also the first affordable apartment building in the township with elevators to make it accessible. “One of the main features of this building in Elmira, or that one of the larger needs that we were responding to was to have a building that was accessible for people with mobility challenges. And so a big part of that was making sure this building had an elevator,” explained MennoHomes executive director Dan Driedger. “Although it’s only a three-storey building, and you wouldn’t be required to put an elevator in there, we had conducted a survey back in 2014-2015 and the feedback we got from the community was that it was critical to have a building that was zero-steps into it, and that somebody with some mobility challenges could comfortably live in, and then MENNOHOMES | 4
