Wellesley residents oppose density of subdivision proposed for village

FAISAL ALI Concerned about the density of a proposed new housing development, residents of a Wellesley neighbourhood were out in force at township council Tuesday night, making their opposition known.

They also presented councillors with a petition against the developer’s requests.

Blaze Properties Inc. wants to build 16 semi-detached homes and one single-family house on a vacant twoacre lot on Gerber Road in the village.

To make the homes fit, the company wants to make three of the 17 units smaller than the mandated minimum sizes of semi-detached and single detached homes in the township.

Residents of the village, however, accused the developer of trying to “jam” as many people onto the one lot as they could, with little regard for the rural community’s small-town character. They pointed to the fact that the property company had to request lowering the size requirements so they could fit more homes into the lot.

Two early years centres have been planned for the Township of Woolwich, one at Riverside Public School in Elmira, and a

second at the site of the new St. Boniface Catholic School, slated for construction in 2019 in Breslau. The Breslau centre will be the first such early years centre available to the town; Elmira, on the other hand, already has limited programming on offer. “(The two centres) are both in progress. While child care centres are essentially comparable to daycares that can look after children independently, early years centres offer services that involve both the parent/caregiver and the child.

and Family Centres are intended to support parents and caregivers in their role as children’s first teachers,” said Cardow, explaining the difference between child care and early learning centres. “And they are a place that parents ... or caregivers come with their children to engage in really enriching play and inquiry-based learning opportunities with their children.”

SUBDIVISION: Plan tries to jam too much into area, say residents

Blaze Properties received approval to decrease the setback of the single home that abuts Gerber Road, allowing the property to be built three metres closer to the busy road than normally allowed.

Residents raised concerns that by moving the property closer to the road, the home would obstruct sightlines of passing motorist, where the speed limit is set to 80km/h.

Blaze Properties had originally received approval to build 16 homes on the lot in October 2015, but after encountering an issue with the way that the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change regulations treats the water supply system for condominiums, the company had to alter its proposal, according to documents supplied by the company.

Residents stressed at the Tuesday council meeting

that they were not opposed to the development of the smaller homes, just the request for reduced property and frontage sizes.

The majority of Wellesley’s councillors likewise supported the development project, saying that the township needed to have more affordable housing options for people moving in the area. However, they also expressed confusion as to why, instead of requesting approval to

build smaller homes than the bylaws allow, Blaze Properties couldn’t go with their original plan of building 16 homes total on the lot.

Township planner Geoff VanderBaaren, who spoke at the meeting, said the request could be reworked to limit construction to 16 and not 17 homes.

The issue was deferred until the concerns raised by residents and councillors can be addressed.

With their usual children’s games, activities, food and movies after sundown, the 16th annual Hampton Street block party will allow for Elmira residents around the Hampton Street block the opportunity to gather together and meet their neighbours.

“As in past years we continue to enjoy an event that brings our neighbours together in the spirit of family fun,” said Randy Smith. “New neighbours meet their neighbourhood; young people meet their peers and older folks.”

Looking back 16 years, Smith remembers forming the committee that is still organizing the event today.

“The reason that we started this 16 years ago was because we wanted to know more of our neighbors,” said Smith. “We do this once a year to get the community more aware of

who’s who.”

The block part really emulates what it means to live in a neighbourhood that goes beyond having homes in close proximity to each other.

“To me it’s a big thing about having the kids in the community feeling safe, having new people to the area seeing that they have moved onto a good block.

It’s just a great opportunity to meet new people and have fun,” he said. “It is just win-win-win all around.”

Smith says each year in addition to the fun games, movies and eatery they do a 50/50 draw, food collection and donations jar targeted towards a community initiative. This year they have decided to donate the money towards the Elmira splash pad project.

Foodlink event is all about going local Taste Local! Taste Fresh! returns for its 14th year, hosted at Steckle Heritage Farm ALI WILSON Foodlink’s annual culinary showcase and fundraiser, Taste Local!

Taste Fresh! is back for the 14th year on September 10.

As Foodlink’s only fundraiser, proceeds go directly towards the organization’s mission to promote local food. The grassroots, non-profit organization promotes local food and local farms within Waterloo Region, and is well known for its annual Buy Local, Buy Fresh map that shows consumers where to source those items.

“We like to kind of think of ourselves as the pioneers of local food,” said Anna Contini, manager at Foodlink Waterloo Region.

The event is a sampling of the region’s local farmers and chefs that sees guests enjoy a full afternoon of live music, mingling with local providers and a take home artisanal pottery plate. It brings together 17 area chefs and some 20 farmers and producers from the region, welcoming both new and returning partners each year.

Each year participants from the prior event are asked if they would like to return, while Contini seeks out new prospects as well. Chefs have first dibs on what they would like to work with for the season, while Contini partners up the remaining group.

“We pair up local chefs with a farm or producer partner,” she said, noting that in some cases they pair two partners up. “So each dish will feature that local food, whether that be beef, tomatoes, carrots, chicken, whatever.”

She notes that although some of the participant may not be directly based in Woolwich or Wellesley, it is likely that their products are available in the area through retailers or local establishments.

The afternoon is all about giving guests the opportunity to sample original food creations showcasing local foods and farmfresh products prepared by the chef-farmer teams.

“Folks go around to each station and they are served whatever the dish is. While being served, they can chat,” she said. “The idea is that they can learn more about how the food was grown and how it was made. So, really, the whole event encourages relationship-building between the farmers the chefs the consumers, and awareness about where the local food comes from.”

Part of the draw each year is receiving a handcrafted pottery plate by the Waterloo Potter’s Workshop on which food is served.

“They are so beautiful,” she said. “I think myself it is one of the highlights of the event.”

At just three hours long, the celebration of food is a packed affair, with relationships developing throughout.

Beyond educating consumers, the event gives chefs from local restaurants the opportunity to work with local foodstuffs and build relationships with producers.

“Many of the chefs are now aware of not only their own partner but other lo-

Artist Peter Etril Snyder dies at 73 Painter captured images of Waterloo Region, Mennonnites for some 50 years A chronicler on canvas of Mennonite life in Waterloo Region, artist Peter Etril Snyder died Monday following treatment for leukemia.

He was 73.

His artwork was a widely recognizable portrayal of rural life in the area, particularly of Old Order Mennonites, gracing many publications, including

promotional material for the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival.

Born Jan. 28, 1944 at the same Kitchener hospital where he passed on August 28, Snyder began painting at the age of 12, taking lessons as a teen before heading to the Ontario College of Art from 1963-66. For the next 50 years, he built a career as

an artist both in the region and beyond, enjoying both commissioned works and documenting local scenes that grabbed his interest, according to biographical information on his website.

Snyder established galleries for his original works and his reproductions, including a popular spot in St. Jacobs, which operated

from 1989 until his retirement in 2009.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn, his brothers Doug and Don and their respective families.

There will be no service, but visitations will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Friday (2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.).

Fishing derby a Labour Day tradition at Wellesley Pond ALI WILSON Back for another year, the Wellesley and District Lions are gearing up for their annual fishing derby on Labour Day, although it will be the only event the village sees on the holiday Monday.

Originally started by an individual who wanted an activity for his kids to do before going to school, the event has since been run by the Lions, with the annual derby signifying the end of the summer for the community.

Although it is open to all ages, the derby is really targeted towards the youth in the community. Since

taking it over it has been steadily growing in popularity.

It all happens day of, with setup at 8 a.m, registration at 9 a.m. and all lines in the water from then until noon.

“There is always people here as soon as they see any kind of activity so we try to accommodate them, although they are not allowed to do any kind of fishing until 9 o’clock,” said Peter van der Maas, organizer from the Wellesley and District Lions Club.

Participation comes at a cost of $7 per angler and $20 per family, with all proceeds going to com-

munity improvement projects.

For the registration fee kids get to fish the derby, play their hand at reeling in a tagged fish, have a hot dog, drink and a chance at one of the donated prizes.

“We have very good support from the merchants and business owners in town they always supply all of the prizes for the prize tables, but it is strictly a fun day. It is a catchand-release and we are looking forward to a good turnout. We always have a lot of fun,” he said.

A week prior to the derby, the Lions drop 15 tagged fish in the pond.

The first person to reel up

one of the tagged fish will go home $150 richer – although all participating children are eligible to win additional prizes throughout the day.

“We have had up to 15 tagged fish and we throw them in the pond the week before. So far, oddly enough, in only two (years) has the tagged fish been caught, but the real goal of the derby is just to provide families with an activity to do together over Labour Day weekend,” he said.

“The real attraction is in the family environment.”

cal food partners in the event as well, so a lot of longer-term relationships have come out of that,” she said. “And then, of course, for the consumer to know where they can source local, where they can purchase farm gate, even a lot of our retail stores have local food – so really that is what it is all about.”

Wellesley producer Edwards Family Organics, a first-time participant, is partnering up with Borealis Grille & Bar. They will be supplying the head chef with lamb for a smoked lamb terrine with roasted tomato jam, beet pickle and collard chips.

“We produce everything on our farm, it is certified organic,” said Krista Edwards, co-owner of Edwards Family Organics with her husband Mike, noting that in addition to lamb they also farm pork, beef and chicken.“It’s just a little bit different niche.”

Newcomers to the event, the couple just recently opened up a retail store on their farm and felt the partnership would be a great way to raise awareness of their niche organic products.

“We have a really nice variety of things this year,” she said. “What we like to do is showcase the variety of food that Waterloo Region is known for – it’s like a little snapshot.”

Contini is coming into her tenth anniversary with Foodlink.

“It is kind of neat to see the evolution of local food and all of the partnership that have evolved over the years,” she said.

Over her time with Foodlink and the event, they have played host at a handful of locations but feels they have made the right

connection working with Steckle Heritage Farm.

The venue plays host to heritage barn dating back to 1840, holding the bulk of the event, a working farm with animals, vegetable gardens and a sunflower field – all located directly in Kitchener.

“They have this heritage barn, it is a working farm in the city, it is a really lovely venue for the event,” she said.“It just seemed like a nicer fit to reinforce the farm to fork connection.”

Playing through out the grounds will be local Gypsy jazz musician Juneyt.

“He is pretty well known on the local scene here, we have had him for five or six years and we love him so we keep asking for him to come back,” she said.

While the tagged fish don’t always come out, van der Maas sees many different fish in their wading pool.

“Cat fish, carp, some sunfish, a few bass, maybe a small trout,” he said, noting the largest trophy of the day goes towards the fisher who brings in the smallest fish.

“The fish that are caught here are tossed into the wading pool and the kids can look at them here.”

While van der Maas wouldn’t reveal the best spots to fish around the pond, he said some of the regulars swear by their locations, noting that the entire pond is fair game to find one of the tagged prize fish.

“I would be giving away trade secrets, you know,” he jokes. “People set up chairs all the way around some people go under the

bridge some of them go on the other side of Queen’s Bush Road so there is lots of room for everybody.”

This year, anglers are able to set up wherever they please, except for the area directly beside the bridge, which is home to one of the preliminary projects in the ecological renovation of the pond.

“Some people might be a little disappointed by the excess growth around the edges, but we are in the middle of an ecological renovation of the pond. We are allowing the growth to continue to discourage geese, for one thing, and to solidify the shoreline,” he said, noting the addition of about 1,000 native species along the shoreline.

While the derby used to run alongside the Soap Box Classic, this year it will be going solo.

After a long standing run of the traditional soap box derby, organizers were

unable to find people to take it over, so they have cancelled it all together.

Van der Maas is sad to see the event go.

“Numbers might go down but the greater concern is the lack of volunteer participation that has lead to the cancellation of the Soap Box Classic,” he said. “I am afraid that this is a trend, a very worrisome trend because the very features that make the village a great place to live are the features that are driven by volunteer work.”

The fishing derby will also be looking for a new organizer next year as it is van der Maas’ final derby, although he says it is likely another fellow Lion will take up the torch.

Anglers can register for the fishing derby on the day of, September 4, at 9 a.m. at the Wellesley Pond.

Tickets are $7, which includes entry in the derby, a drink and a hotdog.

RWL seeking public input The Region of Waterloo Library is asking for the public’s input to help shape the next four years of library service in the townships.

The survey is to aid in the development of the 2018-2022 Region of Waterloo Library service plan to be used to improve rural library services and programs ensuring they are responsive to the needs of residents.

An extensive consultation was conducted with rural residents in 2012 to inform the prior service plan that has been implemented since 2013.

Currently the library serves some 65,000 residents across the region, including in the townships of Wellesley and Woolwich, through 10 library branches, four popup libraries and online.

Conestogo intersection to reopen With the intersection of Northfield Drive and Sawmill Road in Conestogo expected to reopen tomorrow (Friday), work shifts to the next phase of the reconstruction project.

A construction Site Meeting was held

this morning and the following points regarding access and the next stage of construction were confirmed.

The Scotch Line/New Jerusalem detour and signs will be removed. It is assumed that traffic on the gravel section of New Jerusalem Rd (which was not part of the formal detour) will go back to being very minimal.

Flagmen will be taken off the Glasgow Street bridge, but the existing closure signs will remain in place. Meanwhile, the Peel St bridge in Winterbourne will remain closed, Woolwich Township reports.

The detour for Northfield Drive traffic looking to go east on Sawmill Road will continue to be via Hwy 85 and

Hwy 86. Existing signs will remain in place.

As of Monday, Sawmill Road will be closed (barricaded) to all traffic at Misty River Drive and at the bridge over the Grand River for the start of Stage 3 of construction. Misty River Drive will also be barricaded at Sawmill Road to stop traffic from entering the work zone. Sawmill Road will be closed during working hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) but opened up to twoway traffic for evenings and weekends on a one-lane dirt path around the construction area. If traffic or weather conditions create problems, the dirt path may have to be closed outside of working hours. This configuration will

be in effect until completion of Stage 3, which is expected in mid-November.

8:00 AM | In the early morning hours of August 23, Waterloo Regional Police were called to the community of Maryhill in Woolwich Township for a report of suspicious vehicles in the area. Police arrived and encountered a vehicle that had been recently stolen fleeing the area. Police did not engage in a motor vehicle pursuit out of concern for public safety. A short time later, the stolen vehicle was located on Maryhill Road after it had left the road and collided with a tree. The driver fled the area on foot. The Stratford Police Canine Unit attended the scene to assist and located items believed to have been stolen from unlocked vehicles in the area. However, the driver was not located. Waterloo Regional Police want to remind residents to avoid leaving keys or other personal belongings unattended in their vehicles and to always lock their doors. 4:56 PM | Two boys were making rude gestures and throwing rocks at passing vehicles from the parking lot at the veterinary clinic on Benjamin Road in Woolwich Township. The boys were approximately 8 years of age and caused damage to one of the vehicles. Police were unable to locate the suspects.

Township, Ford pickup truck was involved in a collision with a deer.

There were no human injuries but there was significant damage to the pickup truck.

No soap box derby this weekend After years of being a Labour Day weekend staple in the Village of Wellesley, the annual Soap Box Classic has been discontinued.

“For the last few years my husband and I tried to find younger blood to take over. Unfortunately no one would bite. So we finally announced last year that we won’t be organizing it this year, hoping someone would come

forward. No one did, so sadly it’s over,” said organizer of 11 years, Wendy Sauder, in an e-mail to The Observer.

A declining trend among many service groups, organizations and community events – the lack of volunteerism in the community strip villages of the features that make them great places to live, noted Wellesley fishing derby organizer Peter van der Maas.

The next closest places to enter a soap box derby would be Shakespeare or Woodstock, which lead competitors from all across the region to compete in Wellesley for the convenience and character the village provided.

Regional police officer on trek to raise fund for St. Mary’s Waterloo Regional Police Sgt. Peter Viol this week began a 4,300-kilometre trek across Canada to raise funds for the Regional Cardiac Care Centre at St. Mary’s General Hospital.

The self-supported Heartbeat Tour will see Viol cycle from Vancouver to Waterloo Region, a ride to commemorate the passing of his late wife, Monique, who died from complications following a heart transplant in 1983.

She was 20 years old.

“I know Monique would support this ride because she wouldn’t want to see other families going through what she went through,” said Viol in a release. “This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, not only to give her death a purpose, but to raise awareness of the importance of cardiac care for women.”

HAMPTON ST.:

To date, Viol has raised more than $23,000. His 2017 goal is $30,000.

Viol is no stranger to long-distance cycling journeys. In 2015, he competed in the 4,440 km Tour Divide, which runs from Banff, Alberta to the U.S.Mexican border. During that tour, he cycled from Banff to Gunnison, Colorado. In 2016, he completed the Chowder Tour, another self-supported ride from St. John’s, N.L., to Ottawa.

Both events raised more than $30,000 for health care in Waterloo Region.

He is expected to complete his journey at the end of September and will participate in the St. Mary’s Hike for Heart at Laurel Creek Conservation Area on September 30.

Texas flooding gives perspective, pause for thought THE FLOODING IN TEXAS courtesy of Hurricane Harvey makes clear how powerless we are against the forces of nature. Also obvious is the fragility of our built environment, particularly in popular coastal areas.

At least 22 people have died and cost estimates already amount to tens of billions, with a full assessment still weeks and months away.

Reports and images from the area put in perspective the scale of natural disasters seen in this area – the flood in June was minor and isolated, as was a tornado that touched down earlier this month.

That’s not to downplay the impact on those affected, but we are lucky to be relatively free of major risks. We are far removed from the hurricanes – save for the occasional rain that pushes this far inland – earthquakes, mud/rock slides and even sweeping forest fires seen elsewhere. Tornadoes can and do happen, but with nothing like the frequency and intensity of the U.S. Plains, for instance. Nowhere near large bodies of water, we are unlikely to see the kind of flooding that seems to be increasingly commonplace.

In the case of Houston, what’s going on there is unprecedented in size, but represents the third straight year the area has been hit by a 500-year flood. The odds for such storm/ rainfall events are deemed to be 0.2 per cent in any given year, thus the 500-year moniker. Whether the last few years are a statistical anomaly or an indication that there’s more to come remains to be seen.

Still, it’s a troubling trend, as extreme weather is in evidence globally. The June 23 flooding in Woolwich, though fairly limited, was the result of a very heavy – and very much unexpected – rainfall that hit the northern part of the Grand River watershed, wreaking havoc downstream. The tornado, too, was the result of a quick-developing storm cell, providing little warning. Similar examples abound worldwide.

We’re not to confuse today’s weather with the big picture of climate, but every anomaly adds to the evidence.

If climate models are on target, we can expect more extreme weather days ahead, even putting aside the human contribution to global warming/climate change.

These changes would significantly decrease the duration of the annual snow season and lengthen the growing season.

They could increase the frequency and severity of extreme heat events in summer.

If the models hold, we can expect more than just rising temperatures. Greater impacts could include changes in precipitation patterns, in soil moisture, and possibly in the frequency and intensity of severe weather events.

Such extremes would have consequences for the property insurance industry and possibly for disaster-relief agencies.

Health impacts could affect the insurance and pension industries.

Additional damage to forest ecosystems by pests and diseases, and increased frequency and intensity of fires may occur. Species currently threatened with extinction face the greatest risk of fading away in a changing climate.

Ontario falls prey to a number of natural hazards: drought, heat waves, floods, rain, snow and ice storms, tornadoes and even hurricanes, although they’re rare. Small changes in average climate conditions are expected to generate significant changes in extreme events.

From very local flooding such as June’s event in West Montrose and Conestogo to the devastation of Harvey, Katrina and Sandy, it’s likely we can expect more such new flashes.

Angola is ripe for change. Or possibly not WORLD AFFAIRS There is momentous change in Angola. The oil-rich country of 28 million people on Africa’s southwestern coast has just elected J-Lo as president.

There is also very little change in Angola. The new president is not Jennifer Lopez, the American J-Lo (which would definitely mean big change). It is João Lourenço, a member of the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) since the 1970s, a general since the 1980s, and most recently the minister of defence. He can’t sing, either.

J-Lo replaces 75-year-old José Eduardo Dos Santos, who has been president for the past 38 years (the second longest-ruling president in the world). But it’s questionable how much power he will really inherit from the outgoing president, who passed a new law prohibiting his successor from changing the heads of the army, the police or the intelligence service

for eight years. Dos Santos wants no surprises after his retirement.

In fact, it’s hard to say that Dos Santos is retiring at all. He will remain the head of the ruling MPLA party, his daughter Isabel (Africa’s richest woman) runs the state oil company, and one of his sons controls the $5-billion state investment fund. Other allies and cronies dominate the rest of the economy.

J-Lo, by contrast, holds no positions that provide opportunities to steal massive amounts from state funds, and is widely believed to be non-corruptible or nearly so, a rare quality in the MPLA’s senior leadership. That may be why he was forced on Dos Santos by the party as a successor.

The MPLA has a little problem. After a devastating 27-year civil war between rival liberation movements ended with the death in battle in 2002 of Jonas Savimbi, leader of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita), rapidly growing oil production and high world oil prices created a huge boom in the

Angolan economy. In several years since then it has been the fastest-growing economy in the world.

A great deal of the new wealth went to senior MLA members and their allies, but enough trickled down to keep the impoverished masses quiet and obedient.

But the collapse in oil prices since 2014 has halved the Angolan government’s income and killed the private economy, such as it was. In the sprawling capital, Luanda, half-finished, abandoned apartment towers line the shore.

The poor are getting poorer, and they may eventually get angry. This is a relatively rich country where 20 per cent of children die before their fifth birthday and a quarter of the adult population is officially unemployed (unofficially, much more). There is a lot of dry political tinder lying around waiting for a match.

The opposition Unita party won 27 per cent of the votes in last week’s election, ten per cent more than ever before, despite what was probably largescale vote-rigging. The rank-and-file of the ruling

party is getting worried, and despite having made the transition from hardline communist to freemarket capitalist over the years, the MPLA remains a disciplined organization.

Dos Santos was invulnerable until he got ill, but for more than a year he has been receiving treatment for cancer. He had his cousin, Vicente Manuel, made vice-president in 2012 with the intention of making him the designated successor, but the party chose João Lourenço instead in 2015. And though nobody is admitting it publicly, it probably pressured Dos Santos not to run again in the 2017 election.

So change is probably on the way in Angola after all, despite Dos Santos’s strenuous efforts to protect his family’s own wealth and power and hamstring his successor. What kind of change it’s hard to say, because like all prominent MPLA members J-Lo has had to hide any contrary opinions he may have held during the long reign of Dos Santos.

We really ought to welcome moves to cool housing market, boost affordability EDITOR'S NOTES Tighter federal rules on borrowing could reduce the demand for housing five to 10 per cent, further cooling an overheated market.

A report released this week by TD Bank also predicts the changes could cut two to four per cent off its forecast for housing prices next year.

The new rules apply to non-insured mortgages – those where the buyers have put at least 20 per cent down – by making people qualify at rates 200 basis points higher than the actual mortgage rates.

That’s supposed to help reduce the risk of people defaulting on the loans, a precaution in keeping with signs rates may be increasing beyond the historical lows we’ve seen.

All that low-cost money has in fact been partly to blame for soaring prices, according to a recent report from the Fraser Institute, which finds that Canadians

have been able to qualify for much larger mortgages over the past two decades because of declining interest rates and rising incomes.

“Increased borrowing power, brought about by falling interest rates and rising incomes, is potentially the most overlooked and least understood factor influencing home prices across Canada,” says Niels Veldhuis, the organization’s president, of the new study, Interest Rates and Mortgage Borrowing Power in Canada.

The report finds that between 2000 and 2016, interest rates fell from 7.0 to 2.7 per cent, which increased Canadians’ mortgage-borrowing power – the maximum size of mortgage homebuyers can qualify for – by 53 per cent.

Rising incomes across Canada during that same time – also up a nominal 53 per cent nationwide – amplified the increased borrowing power for homebuyers.

The arguments are clearly self-serving. The bigger picture must be taken into account, particularly the on-again, off-again bursting of the housing bubble.

Are we headed for a pop in the housing market? A soft landing?

We’ve been debating that for years, particularly since the collapse in the U.S. market now almost a decade ago, but there’s a long series of reports that have raised doubts about the sustainability of the largely upward trend that slowed only marginally during the worst of the 2008 recession.

Even with some easing in Vancouver and Toronto – partly the result of restrictions on foreign buyers – average home prices remain far out of reach of many residents.

None of that sounds sustainable. Some economists and market watchers are waiting for a correction.

Still, there are plenty of us who see housing as a safe investment, unlike, for instance, the stock market, which remains volatile.

Both markets are a gamble,

however, and both were and continue to be heavily manipulated by the financial sector, the very industry responsible for the systematic corruption at the root of our economic woes.

Speculation, of course, is another word for gambling.

When you buy stocks, you’re betting they’ll go up in price (or down, if you’re shorting). Other than securities, there are a host of speculative investments for those willing to take the risk. Speculation also extends to the housing market. This applies not only to people who buy homes to flip them, or farmland in the hope of a future subdivision, but to many who’ve entered the housing market in recent years.

As the bubble grew and prices rose, many buyers overextended themselves, believing prices would just keep rising. In much of the U.S., the bubble burst after 2008, leaving many holding mortgages on homes worth considerably less than what they owed the bank. Foreclosures followed, and some banks collapsed under the

weight of ill-advised mortgages.

While Canada’s housing market did not take the same kind of hit, sales and prices did drop a bit before recovering. Anyone who thought the bubble would continue to expand has neglected history, and the market optimism has proven unfounded.

There’s a simple reality: housing prices do not always go up.

That said, even recent drops in some markets have to be weighed against the big increases we’ve seen in recent years. The small drops are really only a correction from what was an overheated market fueled by unrealistic expectations.

Price decreases could help those looking to get into the market down the road, but that upside could be offset by the fact credit is harder to come by. Lenders are hanging on to their money, and tightening requirements when they do part with it.

power by 126 per cent.

“This increase in borrowing power – in simple terms – means that an average Canadian family, dedicating the same share of their income to monthly mortgage payments, can afford a mortgage that’s more than twice as big now as it would have been in 2000,” Veldhuis says.

In essence, we could borrow more, so we did. That in turn drove up housing prices to meet – and exceed – our buying capacity.

Although typically cast by the industry as a bad thing, reforms are needed to bring housing back into the realm of affordability.

Better to cool down housing market than wait for the bubble to burst, though we’ve been waiting for that pop for a long time now.

The wider industry, including financial sector, developer and builders, would prefer the government keep pumping the real estate market that’s driven a good chunk of the economy while putting Canadians even deeper into debt, all the while excluding growing numbers of people with artificially

Despite high housing costs across the country, the average Canadian family spent more on taxes in 2016 than housing, food and clothing combined. The average Canadian family paid nearly twice as much of their income in taxes (42.5%) as they did for housing (22.1%). The basic necessities of life, which include food, clothing and housing, amounted to just 37.4% of income — still less than the percentage of income going to taxes.

“As you well know, this government has a history of massive cost overruns when it comes to infrastructure projects, and your office has played an integral role in bringing this information to the public’s attention. Before any more hard-earned tax dollars are sunk into these projects, taxpayers deserve to know that the money will be spent effectively and efficiently.”

Lourenço’s reputation for honesty. Long-ruling parties faced with collapsing popular support often try to win it back by choosing somebody known to be clean and competent as leader: think of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union picking Mikhail Gorbachev as General Secretary in 1985.

But remember also what happened to the CPSU in 1991. It was already too late to “reform” the Communist Party in the Soviet Union by 1985. It may already be too late to reform the

MPLA now. And Angola’s civil war is only 15 years in the past: a transition to a less corrupt, more open, less repressive regime would be a tricky thing to manage.

Lourenço has fought for and served the MPLA all his adult life, and he certainly has no intention of removing it from power.

But he could be seduced by the idea of making it really popular again, and thereby holding onto power by genuinely democratic means.

In which case we must wish him luck, while knowing that he is likely to fail.

Three local athletes recipients of Dan Snyder scholarships Jonathan Reinhart, Tyler Townsend and Savannah Campbell are this year’s winners of the award FAISAL ALI For their athleticism and academic prowess, local athletes Jonathan Reinhart, Tyler Townsend and Savannah Campbell were awarded scholarships from the Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship Fund at a ceremony last week.

Recognizing their achievements both on and off field, the award granted each recipient $1,600 for the new year at their post-secondary schools of choice.

“It feels awesome, to be honest.” said Townsend about receiving the scholarship. “It’s an honour to win the Dan Snyder – (it’s really) something that means so much and people work so hard for it every year.”

Townsend was selected under the scholarship’s “Woolwich Minor Hockey” category for his years with the Wildcats, but it’s fair to say that was not all the appeal he had going for him. At 19, Townsend has had a deep connection to the game and an active involvement in the community for much of his adolescent life.

Townsend first got on the ice at the age of three, started playing at the age of five, and has been playing ever since. He grew up in Milton but moved to Woolwich in Grade 8 where

The last story I read reported that some areas in Texas were dealing with five feet of water and flooding has not yet crested. It is a horrible disaster.

The good news is, if anyone is going to stand up to and rebound from this, it is the Texans.

One great example was made apparent in an online video I saw this morning that showed a shirtless Texan catching a fish that was swimming around his living room. It was a nice fish, too, and he got it by cornering the fish and diving in for it – presumably because the ceiling was too low for casting.

When I saw that and the smile on this man’s face, I figured that these people are going to be all right. Like those in Ontario who made it through this spring’s floods, they are made of sturdy stuff.

A new name and direction for local hockey tournament FAISAL ALI The traditional Woolwich Wildcats Weekend is fast approaching this season much earlier than usual for its 42nd iteration – and this year its promising to be something quite spectacular. With a brand new name and a brand new approach, the tournament – now the Woolwich Fall Memorial Hockey Tournament – is certain to be dif-

ferent from previous years, says first-time organizer Brandan Brubacher.

Heading things up this year, Brubacher said he is looking to take the event in a new direction for its 42nd outing.

“Last year they had some house league and some select teams, but then this year I took it over and I wanted to make it like a premier minor hockey tournament. Make it like a

junior hockey tournament, so I changed it to only single ‘A’ teams and really focusing in on good quality hockey. So I think we’ve done it.”

Thirty-six teams are registered for the tournament, which will be running September 15-17 at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.

“There’s a team coming from Rochester (New York), so that’ll be cool for everyone there really. Whenever

there’s an American team in a tournament, all the kids like that,” says Brubacher.

For the 25-year-old Brubacher, who himself played in tournament as a kid, he’s hoping to bring the tournament back to its more competitive, more stringent roots.

GALEA: Looked at in a certain way, buying another boat really is a societal good FROM | 9

that details how people are dealing with devastating natural events like this, some questions come to mind. For instance, right now some of you are probably wondering, what kind of person leaves their door open during a flood? The answer is a hardcore angler.

Some people will do anything to catch fish. And,

as horrible as the circumstance is, this guy has the fishing story to end all fishing stories.

I don’t mean to make light of this or any other natural disaster. The toll is always heartbreaking.

But there is good news too. For one thing, there are probably more fishing boats per capita in that state and neighbouring Louisiana than in any other part of the world.

And this is turning out to be a good thing for anyone who needs a lift to higher ground. Better yet, times like this showcase the best in people as they pull together to help each other.

This is why sometime within the next year or two I am going to make a pitch for a better boat. It’s not for me or for fishing and duck hunting. No, it is for safety in case we find ourselves

flooded out. And, it will also be helpful if neighbours need a lift.

When I present this, the first question Jenn will ask is, “Why would you need another boat since we already have a canoe and tin boat?”

My go to answer is, “If we have a bigger boat, we can probably save all of your shoes. And I can lend the other boat to neighbours who forgot to put the plugs

in their boats.”

Her next question will likely address the fact that we live on very high ground. I will acknowledge that point but then reply with, “Exactly my point. If flood waters reach us we will really need a bigger boat.”

Then I will point out that if you look at the way people with big and small boats are helping each other in Texas and, this

spring, in areas closer to home, you’ll quickly realize that money spent on a good fishing or duck hunting boat is never wasted.

They offer a sense of security and, on occasion, allow you to use them to enjoy the outdoors too.

Plus, if the flood waters are really high, you might be able to fish in the garage without getting soaked.

Three is the magic number in pre-season play Three games over three days net three ties featuring 3-3 scores as Wellesley works on roster for the season FAISAL ALI It was part conditioning test, part old-school hockey as a busy weekend saw the Wellesley Applejacks post three ties in exhibition games, where there was no OT to settle things.

After a Friday match in St. Clements, the Jacks were on the road Sunday for a pair of games in Kincardine. In each case, the final score was 3-3.

But at this point the games are more about evaluating the players en route to forming a roster than about the scoreboard, and the coaching staff had plenty to take in.

“Friday was our first exhibition game, and this is the time at training camp here where we like to see all these young prospects, the young guys play,” said head coach Brad Gerber.

With three games in short order, he and his staff got to see both newcomers and returning players alike, with each game featuring some mix of both.

Up first against the Applejacks were the Mitchell Hawks, playing Friday evening in St. Clements. The back-andforth contest saw the two teams trade leads before settling on a draw after 60 minutes.

The Jacks drew first blood, holding leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before falling behind 3-2, pulling out a tie in the dying minutes of the game. “[I’m] very impressed with the young guys, the way they competed and then their will to compete and the speed that they showed. There’s definitely a great future for all these guys sometime down the road,” said Gerber of the August 25 match.

After a day’s rest, the

Jacks took the two-hour drive to Kincardine to square-off against the weekend’s second opponent: the Walkerton Hawks.

The game did not get off to a good start for the Wellesley team, with the Hawks scoring two quick goals halfway through the opening period. The Hawks turned up the heat in the second, scoring yet again to take a 3-0 lead.

But if the first half of the game belonged to Walkerton, the second half was claimed by Wellesley.

Applejacks defenseman Kyle Soper got the Jacks on the board, assisted by forward Shaun Pickering, with five minutes left in the middle frame. From there, the Applejacks pressed their attack.

To start the third, Wellesley goalie Conner Duench was swapped in for Ryan Hergott, while the score sat at 3-1. Five minutes in, forward Will Martin scored, assisted by Zach Ribero, to make it a 3-2 game.

It looked like that might be the final score, but some late-game heroics, this time by Spencer Brick, knotted things up at 3-3. From there, the Jacks held off a push from the Hawks to claim the point.

Done with the Hawks, the Wellesley squad got a breather while the hometeam Kincardine Bulldogs battled the Stayner Siskins to – what else? – a 3-3 draw, returning to the ice afterwards to take on the North Middlesex Stars.

The second game of the day was a bit more even tempered than the first, with the teams scoring titfor-tat and the penalties kept to a minimum over the course of the game.

to respond after the intermission, tying the game at two apiece.

Pickering soon after scored his second goal for the game, assisted by Liam Hartman and Nathan Schlupp, putting the Applejacks back ahead at 3-2.

That lead held up until there were fewer than three minutes to play, when the Stars got the goal needed to knot

things up again and hand the Jacks yet another 3-3 draw.

Now, the work begins in earnest to whittle down the roster ahead of the team’s season opener on September 15 in Woodstock.

“Going into the weekend we had 30 players left, and we want to get that down to 21 or 22 by probably this week’s practices,” said Gerber on Monday.

“Just seeing our group together for the first time next weekend, we’re excited about that. Moving forward, we’re excited about working with these guys again.”

The Jacks are on the road Friday to face the Patriots in Mount Forest, returning Saturday to St. Clements for the back end of the home-and-home series. Game time September 2 is 7:30 p.m.

Reinhart is transferring out of Conestoga College to the University of Windsor in September for his second year in business and economics studies.

He’s keen to go pro, and while he ends his stint with the Sugar Kings, he’s now turned his sights to the Windsor Lancers hockey team.

The third recipient of the Dan Snyder Scholarship, Savannah Campbell of Elmira, meanwhile is a track and field athlete. Qualifying in the “Woolwich Community Open” category of the award, 18-year-old Campbell is humbled to have been selected for the award.

“I was really happy. I was honoured to have been selected by the committee.

Somebody like Dan Snyder is a huge community figure,” said Campbell. “It’s a huge honour!”

Campbell joined her school track team in Grade 8, and she’s been running since. Campbell was a top15 finisher at the nationals for two years in the 400m hurdles. Off the field, she has been extensively involved at her school, including volunteering her time to assist coaching the EDSS track team, and joining a number of clubs like Reach for the Top, Mathletes, the English and philosophy clubs. And that’s all on top of her strict training regimen, and her homework.

She will be heading to the University of Ottawa in

Jonathan Reinhart the fall for her studies in biology, and she hopes to pursue research in the field afterwards. During studying, Campbell still will be making time for her running, however, and plans to join the varsity track team.

“I don’t know how far I plan on pursuing track. I love the sport and I’ll continue to do it throughout university, hopefully – injuries aside,” she added with a laugh. “After I’m done with running I plan to pursue coaching in some degree.”

The Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded after the passing of hockey player Dan Snyder in a car accident in 2003. Recipients for the award are chosen by a committee that includes some of Snyder’s family.

The organization has provided $54,519 to local athletes and students since its founding in 2004.

All three athletes were honored at a reception on Wednesday evening in Waterloo.

ment and it was pretty well known all over Ontario, and then it kind of ... I think they wanted to get more teams, so then they started [letting] house league and select teams enter,” recalls Brubacher.

“But it used to be known as a really high class, good hockey tournament kind of thing, and I wanted to bring that back,” he explained, adding that he hoped it would put Woolwich on the map as a major centre of strong hockey.

The tournament has six divisions, with 36 teams – all of them single ‘A’ - from minor PeeWee to major midget, playing in a round-

robin competition. Every team will play a minimum of three games, more if they make it to the championships on Sunday. The Elmira Sugar Kings will also be opening up their season right after the championships, making it a day full of hockey.

The tournament will be entirely free for spectators and Brubacher is aiming for a packed arena. There will be food trucks on site all day, raffles, silent auctions with signed memorabilia.

“I’m definitely encouraging fans and friends to all come out. Even if your kid isn’t in the tournament, there’s going to be a ton of stuff there that you can enjoy,” said Brubacher.

Woolwich women’s soccer team ends on a high note after a season of struggle ALI WILSON Woolwich women’s soccer team finished the season strong, despite having a winless regular season of game play.

The Woolwich Lightning won the Premier Division B Side Finals this week.

Playing in the Grand River Soccer Associations women’s 11 v 11 premier division east outdoor league, the Lightning defeated The Legends’ at the Bill Struck Field Sunday evening 2-0 to secure the win.

During regular season the team had zero wins, zero ties, and ten losses, but they overcame their losses – and limited number of players – to end the season on a high note.

“We struggled all season.

We were actually winless,” said coach David Wang.

When the team entered

into the playoffs they continued the losing streak being defeated in the firstplace team in the other division by a matter of penalty kicks, but when the team made it into the finals they kicked it up a notch.

Even though the team had a depleted roster, that didn’t stop them.

“We were short players, as we often were this entire season, but the ladies just played amazing so it was great to see,” he said.

Playing with a full squad, and four subs, The Legend were a tough match for the only nine active players on the Lightning who played for a majority of the game.

“It was a real character performance,” he said.

“The other team had subs, they were subbing off and our girls you know for a lot of the game there were just nine of them and even

when we had ten, the girl had sprained her ankle so she was basically just standing up as a decoy.”

Wang said the team of Patricia Cronin, Nicole Tunstall, Meg Dalley, Maddie Wang, Alana Thoman, Megan Weishar, Dana Schaffner, Tess Campell, Marley Kernick and Amy Martin, showed real perseverance to pull through such a success at the end of the season.

Now that the season is finished for the team, Wang says they are looking towards building a women’s league team with a bit more depth on the bench.

“One of the reasons why we struggled all season is because we were short players. Next year we are looking to get more players,” he said. “It is pretty much entirely Woolwich teams, these ladies have all played for Woolwich in the

past and it would be great to get more people coming out to play.”

The team is looking for women 18 and up who would be interested in joining the team next year.

Wang notes that although the youngest woman on the team is 18 that there is a wide variety of ages actively playing and welcome.

“We have one underager, but one of the players has four kids so it is really neat – it is a wide variety of ages,” he said. “If any women are interested, next year we will probably drop down from premier, to the first division so it’s not going to be as intense.”

All in all though, Wang says he and the Woolwich contingent are happy to be going into the off season with this success.

“It was a great way to finish the season, for sure.”

Canadian meat producers keep an eye on NAFTA talks

Beef and pork industries wary about any return of Country of Origin Labeling requirements FAISAL ALI So many variables are at play in the renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement that a new deal is a long way off. Still, beef and pork producers are being especially vigilant, advocating against disruptions in trade that might be dredged up in the talks’ wake.

The issue at hand for Canadian producers is not exclusively about tariffs, but rather the possibility of the U.S. re-enacting their highly contentious Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) requirements for beef and pork products entering the country.

It is really a wildcard, said David Thompson, vice-president of Conestoga Meat Packers, a pork producer and exporter based in Breslau, about the talks, which started two weeks ago. The company supplies its meat products to retailers in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and some 20 countries worldwide.

It’s unlikely that COOL legislation will be making a comeback in the U.S., says Dan Darling, president of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), but added that they had to be vigilant.

“Things can pop up. We can be given up for some other commodity being fixed,” he said, suggesting COOL might be brought back for concessions elsewhere in the negotiations.

The farm media in Ontario – and throughout the world, in fact – has a mission to help keep farmers informed. Are they the next big thing, she asked?

Well, some of the industry spokespeople she connected with certainly thought so, mainly because the industry has developed new, better-tasting varieties suited for Ontario conditions, and demand has soared. Farmers who are part of the 250-member Ontario Tender Fruit Growers are growing 750 acres of nectarines in the province this year.

NAFTA TALKS: Producers in all three countries share concerns FROM | 13

came to an impasse. Eventually, the Canadian and Mexican governments took their case to the World Trade Organization (WTO), arguing that the labelling requirements were against existing free trade agreements between the three countries, and won.

In December 2015, the WTO ruled in favour of both countries. Moreover, it gave Canada and Mexico the right to “retaliate” against the U.S. for the damage done to their meat industries. Canada was given the chance to impose $1-billion worth of tariffs to a range of U.S. products entering the country (Canada had requested $3 billion), until the U.S. repealed COOL legislation, which it did soon after.

Canada still holds the ability to impose those retaliatory taxes on U.S. exports, and while it does the U.S. is unlikely to try to re-enact COOL – at least not without Canada’s consent first. But cattlemen from all three countries, Canada, Mexico and even the U.S., are presenting a united front on the matter, urging all sides to respect the status quo.

“That NAFTA over the last 23 years has worked extremely well for agriculture and these three countries, and we want to make sure there wasn’t any changes made that would stop that trade from happening,” said Darling, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association president.

“Both our organization (CCA) along with our provincial members, and US

Basically our message is, for the most part, we want to see very, very, very little change in the NAFTA agreements.”

The Canadian, Mexican

and U.S. cattlemen’s associations signed a joint letter last month addressed to the three heads of state, requesting as much.

“After President Trump received that letter, he kind of pulled back a little bit; prior to that letter, he was talking about just pulling right out of NAFTA and basically re-inventing the wheel. And after he received that letter – and I’m sure some correspondence with some other commodities as well – he changed his mind and proceeded with renegotiations, which is a big change.”

Darling says that his organization will continue to advocate for Canadian producers to all parties in the negotiations, which will be held for the most part out of the public spotlight.

The United Way Waterloo Region Communities is offering community matching grants to eligible residents or community groups in Wellesley to assist with the influx of donation requests to the township.

The program is designed to assist in the building of a stronger, safer, more engaged community.

Although there is a similar grant available in both the cities of Waterloo and Kitchener this is the first grant available of its kind in the townships.

“This is a direction that the United Way Waterloo Region Communities is seeking to go, investing in the townships lean more locally focused,” said the organization’s Jonathan Massimi. “And I think this grant has opened up a wonderful partnership with United Way and the township that didn’t exist before.”

He said they are starting it in Wellesley, after having a conversation with the township about the amount of requests for donations they had been receiving.

After realising that a majority of the donation requests were targeted towards aiding community groups in putting on local township activities, he offered to step in.

“I suggested, what if United Way provided funding actually to take portions of that off of the townships plates so that the township wouldn’t have to worry about those events falling through because of lack of funding,” he said.

A group of residents or community group at whole is eligible to apply for the up to $500 donation, excluding political groups, businesses, agencies or individual persons.

The grant requirements are that fundings must help improve the quality of life in the community, in-

clude opportunities to involve community members in planning and implemention and it must have community support.

In addition to providing your portion back with cash or in-kind, volunteer time can also be applied towards the grant matching formula. The offer is set to encourage groups to invite more volunteers and in turn involve more people locally.

“Our experience when we are working with the cities has been that having this funding available becomes a calling in getting people to think about community events,” he said.

Massimi noted that in terms of the application process they didn’t want it to be onerous, but they just simply wanted to provide access to a maximum of $500 to do something in the community.

“It is almost like seed money to get your idea going,” he said.

So far there has been

some interest in the grants, although Massimo says they are hoping to use the information night on September 20 to solidify peoples applications.

“People can ask questions, there will be some information available on the grant and walking people through it because it is a new thing,” he said.

The grants of up to $500 are available throughout the year, with no application deadline, although it is encouraged to get it in sooner than later.

“It is open until the funding is depleted,” he said, noting that there is a total of $5,000 in the pot.

United Way Waterloo Region Communities will be holding the community matching grant information session on Wednesday September 20 from 5-7 p.m. at the Township of Wellesley council chambers in Crosshill. Massimi will be there to answer any questions the public may have pertaining to the grant.

of all so-called tender fruit, comprising peaches, nectarines, plums, pears and apricots.

Given that it takes a newly planted tree about four years to produce fruit, farmers need a long time to respond to a trend like this.

They can plant the trees, but fruit is still a long ways down the road. Hopefully the trend hasn’t petered out by then.

This one looks like it has staying power though, based on reaction to the story and the mostly goodnatured public debate that’s ensued over nectarines versus peaches.

From my perch, either are fine. Ontarians don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables. So, eat one or the other, and you’re better off than if you eat neither.

And then there’s the matter of food waste, which has become a huge issue with municipalities. Buy what you need, use what you buy, and all you’re left with waste-wise with peaches and nec-

tarines is the pit. That’s a great example of minimal food waste.

But I found the elevated passion and hubbub over peach fuzz that surrounded this story was an eye-opener. Based on Karen’s story, I wrote a daily newspaper story about the nectarine phenomenon. That led to peach farmers being interviewed on province-wide radio shows, and later, a face-off between nectarine fans and peach aficionados.

Whoa!

In Ontario, peaches are a legacy fruit. Peach season is a sign that summer has reached full maturity.

Nectarines used to be a bit player in the big scheme of things, literally and figuratively. So, there wasn’t much of a competition between them.

But nectarines have come a long way. Being relatively small, they didn’t have much curb appeal to consumers in grocery aisles.

And in the tender fruit world, size matters. So re-

searchers at the University of Guelph, the Vineland Research Innovation Centre and elsewhere worked to create nectarines that have a sweet taste, cold tolerance and – most important, from a consumers’ viewpoint – girth.

Some farmers report nectarines they now grow are about 25 per cent bigger than the ones of just a decade ago.

Unfortunately for nectarines, their eye appeal extends to insects. Some insects are repelled by peaches’ fuzzy coat. Nectarines and peaches often grow in the same orchard, and that proximity makes nectarines a convenient choice for fuzz-hating bugs, too.

Anyway, if you hate peach fuzz, no amount of logic will convince you to eat them.

Of course, you could simply peel them. Or buy nectarines. Whatever the case, support the commodity of your choice and eat more fruit. It’s good for your health.

Series launches with new performers Matthew Byrne, Lizzy Hoyt are the first two concerts of 12th season of Folk Night at the Registry STEVE KANNON Twelve seasons into his popular Folk Night at the Registry series, producer Jack Cole is a little more comfortable bringing in new acts. He’s established a reputation for choosing strong lineups, and audiences trust his judgment.

Still, he admits to more than a few butterflies when acts unknown to the local scene take to the stage at the Registry Theatre. That being the case, there’ll be some fluttering on September 23 when the season opens with Matthew Byrne and again on the October 28, the second show of the series featuring Lizzy Hoyt.

Both will be new to local audiences.

Some familiar names, including Joe Crookston, Joe Jencks, Si Kahn, Dave Gunning, J.P Cormier and Shari Ulrich round out the season’s offerings.

Byrne gets things rolling, bringing his authentic traditional sound from Newfoundland. Since his debut in 2010, Byrne has won accolades for his work.

His second album, Hearts & Heroes, was honoured as Traditional Recording of the Year at the 2015 Canadian Folk Music Awards. His Folk Night show is part of the release tour for his third recording, Horizon Lines, which debuted in August while he was on staff at Goderich’s Celtic College.

“Matthew is a real voice for traditional music. He’s got so much history,” said Cole. “His mother is a song collector in Newfoundland, and so was his grandmoth-

er. He’s taken it up from his mother, and he’s giving [the songs] back to the people,” he said of the family’s efforts to gather field recordings of local, traditional performers.

As such, Byrne’s performances contain many stories about the songs he sings – “Our audience loves that.”

Shifting from east to west, Lizzy Hoyt performs the second concert of the series, making her way to the Kitchener venue October 28.

A multi-instrumentalist – fiddle, guitar, accordion and harp – Hoyt toured for 10 years as a side musician before pursuing her own projects, which in turn brought her acclaim. She’s twice been nominated for Canadian Folk Music awards (solo artist and traditional singer), and has received other awards and nominations, including an Award of Excellence in Filmmaking or Screenwriting at the Canada International Film Festival for her Vimy Ridge short film, based on her song.

“This lady has just such tremendous talent on fiddle and guitar, and she’s got a beautiful voice,” said Cole of his desire to book her for the series.

True to folk traditions, she nonetheless brings her own modern take to the genre, he notes. Folk singers typically write about issues and about history, and she’s of that mould.

“I was feeling like I needed to get some up-andcomers,” Cole said. “I get my biggest kick from introducing people they don’t

know. I think people will love her.”

For the third concert of the series – to be preceded by a special, as-yet-announced show on November 28 – Cole shifts to more familiar ground with Joe Crookston, who was one of those unknown quantities when he made his Canadian debut at a Folk Night show in 2012.

“That’s Nova Scotian royalty,” said Cole of the performers on tap.

“We should have all the Nova Scotians in the city out that weekend,” he laughed.

Rounding out the series on May 5 is Shari Ulrich, whose career has spanned 23 albums with various bands and as a solo artist.

For the Registry show, she’ll be joined by her daughter Julia Graff, also a multiinstrumentalist, and fellow High Bar Gang member Kirby Barber on bass, vocals, and guitar.

“I’ve been a big fan of Shari Ulrich since the ’70s when she was part of Pied Pumkin. I bought their first two albums on vinyl right from the stage at her shows,” said Cole. “She’s got a large following here.”

All shows take place at the Registry Theatre, 122 Frederick St., Kitchener.

Tickets for the shows range from $18 to $25 in advance, with series passes available.

Consent Application B13/2017 – 1021354 Ontario Inc. (Reist Industries), 100 Union Street, Elmira Zone / Use: General Industrial Urban (M-2) and Open Space (O-2) / industrial / equipment rental operation.

The applicant is requesting permission to sever an approximate 0.7 hectare strip of land at 100 Union Street, having approximately 36.57 metres frontage on Oriole Parkway East, and convey it as a lot addition to the adjacent lands at 35 Oriole Parkway East. The proposed retained lands, located at the corner of Oriole Parkway East and Union Street, are approximately 1.9 hectares in area with approximately 164 metres frontage on Union Street, and contain the industrial / equipment rental operation. Three buildings located on the proposed severed lands will be relocated to the retained lands or demolished.

Consent Application B14/2017 – Grand River Conservation Authority, 7224 Reid Woods Drive Zone / Use: Agricultural (A) / Canagagigue Creek and Woolwich reservoir.

The applicant is requesting permission to grant a 511 square metre easement in favour of the adjacent lands at 2131 Floradale Road (Floradale Feed Mill) for the purposes of providing a stormwater outlet from a proposed storm water management facility to the Woolwich reservoir.

The lands at 2131 Floradale Road are zoned Agricultural with site specific provisions permitting a feed mill.

NOTICE OF THE DECISION: Within 10 days of the meeting, a copy of each decision will be sent to owners, agents, those who submit written comments, and people who sign the register at the meeting. If you wish to be notified of the decision of the Committee of Adjustment in respect to an application, you must submit a written request (to the Secretary-Treasurer – Nancy Thompson ext. 6040) or sign the register at the meeting. APPEAL OF MINOR VARIANCE AND CONSENT APPLICATIONS: Anyone in opposition to a decision may appeal the decision to the Ontario Municipal Board. The Board may dismiss an appeal without holding a hearing if the appellant did not make oral or written submissions to the Committee of Adjustment before a decision was given, or does not provide a reasonable explanation for having failed to make a submission to the Committee.

Barbara Joyce Taylor (nee Haylor) Barbara Joyce Taylor passed away on August 19, 2017 at the age of 90. She was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario on December 25, 1926. Barb was the beloved wife of Walt for 52 years.

Our family was delighted to celebrate momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 90th birthday on Christmas Day 2016. Just a few weeks following that celebration, our mom fell at home. As a result of her injuries, mom could no longer return to her own home and subsequently she was required to receive care briefly at two hospitals.

On March 3, Barb moved into long-term care at Cambridge Country Manor prior to transferring to Chartwell Elmira on March 30 until her passing on August 19, 2017. We express our sincere appreciation to the staff and management at these two facilities for the exceptional professional care and compassion they provided to our mom during her time with them. The staff and residents became part of our family.

Barb will be sincerely missed by her family. Dearly loved mother of Sandra Gates, Pat Taylor, Fred (Gail) Taylor, Kathy (Dave) Messer, Ron (Linda) Taylor, Harold (Shelley) Taylor, and Sue (Pat) McCabe. Grandma will be dearly missed by her 17 grandchildren and 11 spouses, 30 great-grandchildren and 1 spouse, and her 2 great-great-grandchildren. Barb is the much loved sister of Fred â&#x20AC;&#x153;Abâ&#x20AC;? Haylor of Queenston.

Barb and Rusty worked hard over the years on their broiler chicken farm on the outskirts of Welland to provide a wonderful life for their family. The family moved to the Elmira area in the 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Mom continued to live and care for herself in her home until her unfortunate fall on January 16, 2017.

Momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest joy was spending time with her many children, grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren.

She always spoiled us all with her home-made chocolate chip cookies, lemon and apple pies, as well as freshly baked cheese and pizza buns. Always having a jigsaw puzzle on the go kept her alert. She normally finished a 500-piece puzzle every week of the year. When Christmas-time was approaching, she had her days organized so that she could finish the puzzles she had been given on the previous Christmas/Birthday before sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d receive more for the upcoming Christmas/ Birthday celebration.

Barb enjoyed the summer at her cottage in Marten River where she spent her time there relaxing in her front porch overlooking the water. From there, she could see her neighbours head out onto the lake in their boats and return to their docks at dusk, and she could also watch the â&#x20AC;&#x153;big trucksâ&#x20AC;? go past in the distance on the highway. Mom also loved to keep an eye on the hummingbirds drinking as they hovered around the feeders she always kept full in anticipation of their return.

In keeping with Barbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishes, cremation has taken place through Dreisinger Funeral Home in Elmira.

A fundraising event to make your own Ride for Refuge sees participants collect money for a variety of causes to help the disempowered FAISAL ALI Casting a wide net, the Ride for Refuge has grown from a local fundraiser to one international in scope.

On September 30, more than a thousand local participants will join others from as far away as Australia and New Zealand to raise money for as many as 50 different causes.

“That’s the unique thing about the ride,” explains Mika Takamaki, one of the lead organizers of the event. “Most fundraising events are organized by a single charity raising funds for a single cause.”

Ride for Refuge, on the other hand, is organized by a single group, “but then any charity that fits the criteria can use that event to raise money for their own cause. So we have a lot of smaller charities who may not have the capacity or the staff or the volunteer base to organize their own event, but by being a part of the ride they can be part of a nation-wide event.”

There are plenty of charities that participate, but they all have a common mission: to “provide refuge and hope for displaced, vulnerable and exploited people everywhere.”

For Paul Atkinson, the fundraiser has been a huge boon for his support of International Teams Canada, a charity based in Elmira, and its work in Rwanda.

Atkinson has been doing the ride every year with his wife Marlene since the start about 15 years ago, back when it used to be called the Ride for Refugees. Back then, says Atkinson, there

“You get the feeling your doing something that is bigger than you ever thought possible or dreamed of. And all of those riders are supporting a variety of charities, all of whom are focused on helping the poor, the marginalized, the disadvantaged,”

says Atkinson.

Atkinson is particularly passionate about supporting Rwanda, and each year puts together a team to raise money for various causes in the country.

The money they raise goes towards the International Teams which in turn is put towards education-based initiatives in the Kiziba Refugee Camp in Rwanda.

Kiziba is one of about six

major refugee camps in the country, with a population of about 17,000, half of whom are under the age of 18.

In the past International Teams has supported backto-school type programs for children in the camp, student sponsorships and the construction of the Kiziba Community Library, which they helped stock with about 4,500 books

and install solar panels for electricity. This year, says Atkinson, the charity is looking at raising money for adding computer technology to the camp’s library - and the bike ride is sure to help.

“Last year we raised about $12,000, the year before it was about $20,000. It varies,” says Atkinson, noting that he is often one of the top raisers in the Ride for Refuge.

The ride starts at the Koinonia Christian Fellowship in Bloomingdale, and from there people have plenty of routes to choose from: from the gruelling 50km bike ride to the leisurely 5km walk. Takamaki explains the point of the event is to be wholly inclusive, offering something for everyone.

“It’s really about families coming together, friends joining together, raising money for a good cause,” says Takami. “It is certainly not a race.”

The 5km walk takes participants from Bloomingdale Park along Snyder’s Flats to the Grand River and back. The 50km route, meanwhile, takes bikers to Maryhill and then north almost to Ponsonby before coming around back through Ariss towards Bloomingdale. Atkinson, for his part, will be doing the 25km route, which will take him on a circuit east past Maryhill and then around back to Bloomingdale.

I am not fond of potatoes, other than the deep fried varieties that are addictive and bad for you.

But when the new potatoes come along, I am eager to make recipes I have not made in a while.

Today I am going to share two potato recipes for you to try. The first one is Roasted Herb Potatoes, which you can put into the oven and forget about.

Cover them tightly with foil and the broth steams up the potatoes and keeps them from drying out.

This can be made for large groups: I did this for my August menu for the seniors’ meals that I do.

The second recipe is called Parsley Potatoes and can be made quickly on the stovetop. I have used this recipe for formal dinners because the mini red potatoes are attractive flecked with parsley.

Having fun with the English language by turning peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s names into verbs WEIRD NOTES

Q. In the category of

strange pairings in the service of science, that of a robot and the red-eared slider turtle might be one of the stranger. Can you explain?

A. Start with the premise

that robots find it hard to get around by themselves but animals donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. Dae-Gun Kim and colleagues at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology designed robots with a frame that would jut out in front of the turtleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head holding five red LEDs and a food-delivery tube, reports Timothy Revell in â&#x20AC;&#x153;New

Scientistâ&#x20AC;? magazine. The team then glued these small box-like robots to the backs of five red-eared slider turtles, aiming to ride their turtle through five checkpoints in a water tank. Each turtle was â&#x20AC;&#x153;conditioned to associate a lit-up LED with foodâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;so the robots simply guided it using the LEDs and fed it snacks as a reward for going in the right direction.â&#x20AC;? The robot hitchhikers were not only successful but actually sped up with practice (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Journal of Bionic Engineeringâ&#x20AC;?).

Next, researchers want to power the robots by drawing electricity from the motion of the animal host. Says Nathan Lepora at the University of Bristol, UK: â&#x20AC;&#x153;These robots could be used for surveillance, explo-

Roasted Herb Potatoes 6 – 8 new potatoes 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper Herbs, fresh or dried 1 – 284ml beef broth

Scrub potatoes clean, leave skins on.

Into a casserole dish or baking pan, cut potatoes into 1” cubes or larger; just remember the bigger the chunks, the longer they take to cook.

Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Sprinkle with herbs. If using fresh herbs, use twice the amount you would use if using dry herbs.

Pour in beef broth.

Stir it all up, making sure to coat potatoes with beef broth.

Cover tightly with foil.

Bake at 350º F for 1 hour or more.

I stir them halfway through to redistribute the beef broth.

Mini Red Potatoes with Parsley 1-1/2 lbs. mini red potatoes 1 medium onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 1 Tbsp. oil 1-1/2 cups chicken broth 3/4 cup minced fresh parsley 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper

Cut a strip of peel from around the middle of each potato. Leave the rest of the skin on.

In a large skillet, sauté onion and garlic in oil until tender.

Stir in broth and parsley, bring to a boil.

Add potatoes, salt and pepper. Reduce heat.

Cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Sprinkle with additional minced parsley to serve.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY

BE SAFE TRAVELLING TO AND FROM SCHOOL  Plan a walking route to school or the bus stop.

Choose the most direct way with the fewest street crossings and, if possible, with intersections that have crossing guards.

 Walk the route with your child beforehand. Tell him or her to stay away from parks, vacant lots, fields and other places where there aren't many people around.

 Be sure your child walks to and from school with a sibling, friend, or neighbour.

 Teach your kids — whether walking, biking, or riding the bus to school — to obey all traffic signals, signs and traffic officers. Remind them to be extra careful in bad weather.  If your child bikes to school, make sure they wear a helmet that meets one of the safety standards. Research indicates that a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85%.

 Teach your child never to talk to strangers or accept rides or gifts from strangers. Remember, a stranger is anyone you or your children don't know  Teach children to arrive at the bus stop early, stay well or don't trust. out of the street, wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching the street, watch for cars and avoid the driver's blind spot.

RIDE: An event that can be

Cure, participants of the Ride for Refuge raise money for their involvement in the event. The twist here, however, is that people can choose precisely which charity they want to raise money for.

The Ride for Refuge maintains a list of dozens of preapproved organizations on their website to pick from, including Adsum for Women & Children, Global Youth Volunteer Network and, new this year, the Iqaluit Food Centre.

“That’s another thing that is pretty cool this year is for the first time ever we have a charity that’s based in the Arctic,” says Takamaki about the Iqaluit Food Centre. Though far removed geographically from places like Waterloo Region, the centre is able to fundraise across Canada for their community.

“Now we have a partner at the Iqaluit Food Centre in Nunavut, and they’re going to recruit people across Canada in various locations who will ride and raise pledges on behalf of people in the north.”

There are likely charities on the list that people have

never heard of; but through the Ride for Refuge participants can support these lesser-known organizations in a big way. Don’t find the charity you are looking for?

Anyone can recommend organizations to join the Ride, and provided they fit the overarching goal, to help those displaced, vulnerable and exploited, they can be added to the roster.

The ride takes place on September 30, so there is still plenty of time to get involved. People can choose to join a cause, like International Teams Canada or the Iqaluit Food Centre, or donate to participating teams like Atkinson’s “WMB Rwanda Riders.” For more information on the charities, the riders and the routes, head over to their website at www.rideforrefuge.org.

“A lot of times people want to make a difference, but they just don’t know what to do,” says Takamaki.

“If you want to make a difference in the lives of the vulnerable, this is an opportunity to do something that’s actually fairly easy.

CHILD CARE: Reviewing the mix of services FROM | COVER

The new early years centres underway in the township are part of a much larger plan by the Ontario government to change how Ontario’s early years centres are run. Rather than fund and oversee the OEYCs themselves, the province, through the Ministry of Education, will begin providing funds to the local municipalities instead starting in 2018. The local governments in turn, like the Region of Waterloo, will then be expected to fund and direct their early years services as they see fit.

Simultaneously, while the municipalities take over these centres, the services they provide are also facing a review. Currently, each OEYC is funded by the government, but run independently by organizations like the YMCA, Our Place in Kitchener, and Woolwich Community Services in Elmira, with every group providing different programs at different locations.

says that this fragmented system creates gaps in important services to different communities. Beginning in 2018, the ministry wants to standardize the various OEYC services across Ontario to ensure everyone has access to the same important services. Under this new plan, the OEYCs will be renamed to Ontario Early Years Child and Family Centres (OEYCFC), to reflect their new mandate.

“It’s not about a one-sizefits-all,” explained Douglas Bartholomew-Saunders, commissioner of regional community services, at a meeting of Community Services Committee in Waterloo, August 22. “What the ministry has done is indicated that it is looking for a more consistent approach to the delivery of early years services so that if you’re receiving them in Cambridge, they’re not dramatically different than what you’d see in ... Woolwich, for instance.”

As part of this new consolidation, the region com-

pleted a needs assessment of early years services in Waterloo, and determined Riverside and St. Boniface would make good candidates for new Early Years centres.

“Our hope is that everybody will know ... that an Ontario Early Years Child and Family Centre is a place that they can go with their child to learn with their child, get support as their child’s first teacher,” said Cardow, whether that means getting expert advice on child development or referrals to other services.

“And hopefully it’s also a place where they could access some of those other services in a communityhub model where maybe there are services on sight as well that they could go so that it’s all in one place.”

Funding will be transferred over to the Region of Waterloo for the early years centres starting January 2018, while the transition to the new programming is expected to take place over the course of the year.
