Changing of the guard Pipes and drums usher in new council Steve Kannon
T
he hors d’oeuvres were still warming, the refreshing beverages still on ice, but Woolwich’s new mayor was already talking of rolling up his sleeves and getting to work on the business of running the township. Still, Tuesday night’s first official meeting of the newly elected council largely focused on laudatory speeches and finger foods. Deliberating involved tea, coffee or punch. Amidst the yuletide decorations of Lions Hall in Elmira, Mayor Todd Cowan and councillors Julie-Anne Herteis, Allan Poffenroth, Mark Bauman and Bonnie Bryant spoke only words of thanks to voters, colleagues and former councillors as they were sworn-in by Waterloo Region Chair Ken Seiling. The ceremonies done, Cowan later said councillors would use the next month to get up to speed prior to council resuming regular sessions on Jan. 11. "It's time to get down to work."
