Shared Network Canada (SNC) had previously held a public information centre, though it was lightly publicized and held in Bloomingdale. In the meantime, there has been growing opposition to the plan, which calls for a 65-metre (213-foot) tower to be installed on a farm property on St. Charles Street, just east of the village.

Having received a multitude of feedback from residents, Woolwich’s planning department last month asked the company to add another public meeting into the mix.

Region pushes back dates for trio of major road construction projects in Woolwich Township STEVE KANNON THE REGION HAS PUSHED back a few major road projects slated for Woolwich Township.

Reconstruction work on Hawkesville Road and Northside Drive in St. Jacobs, originally planned

for this year, has been delayed until 2019. Likewise, regional plans for major construction on Church Street East and Arthur Street in Elmira have been put off until 2020 and 2021 respectively.

look at its pipes under the roadway, with an eye on replacing the infrastructure when the region has the pavement ripped up.

moving forward, said Jared Puppe, the township’s acting manager of engineering.

The sanitary sewers could be replaced along with waterlines under Northside Drive and Hawkesville Road.

For its part, the region plans to do the design work this year as well as the relocation of any underground utilities as necessary.

“I am currently awaiting soils information, once it is received I expect the detailed design will continue,” said project manager Larry Van Wyck in an email.

Some of the work may be done in conjunction with construction plans along the stretch of Sawmill Road between the roundabout and King Street, he noted.

Work on Sawmill Road is one of the reasons for pushing back the Elmira projects, as the region predicts doing the work simultaneously would create problems with detour

routes.

“The surrounding regional projects undertaken in 2019, particularly the Sawmill Road watermain installation, will use Church Street as the detour. Therefore for traffic management purposes, we have to keep Church St. open and accessible. We also bumped Arthur Street for the same reason. Doing work on Arthur St. in 2019 would increase the traffic congestion substantially as a lot of the traffic from the neighbouring projects will seek Arthur St. to get around the construction,” said regional project manager Boris Latkovic in an email.

While the delay of the Arthur Street project may be necessary, that doesn’t change the fact “Arthur Street is in awful shape,” said Puppe, who noted the work has been pushed back a few times since 2013.

Still, there will be more time for looking at options

in Elmira, particularly at the intersection of Church and Arthur streets, he added.

Pushed by the township, the region is looking at adding turning lanes on Church Street on one or both the east and west side of the Arthur Street intersection. That would involve some additional work – lane widening and the potential loss of some parking spots on Church Street West – but would ease traffic congestion, Puppe suggested, adding that now is the time to do it, with the next reconstruction likely decades out.

“Something should happen now – if you don’t do it right with these two big projects, you’re likely 40 years out before the intersection gets done again.”

While the region has argued the intersection works fine as is, the township has begged to differ, prompting the upper tier to investigate options.

Fashion fundraiser a benefit for YWCA program that helps families fleeing domestic abuse ALI WILSON A LOCAL BUSINESS IS partnering up for an evening event of women helping women.

In its seventh year, Passion for Fashion will be coming to the St. George Banquet Hall on March 26.

The event that provides guests with dinner, a fashion show and silent auction to boot sees all proceeds

going to the YWCA Kitchener-Waterloo’s Family Relocation Project.

That initiative provides gently used dishes, couches and beds to women and children that have left abusive relationships, often escaping their homes with nothing but the clothes on their back.

“Women and children will quite often leave an abusive relationship and they leave with nothing,” said

co-founder Nancy Koebel of Lyfestyle Financial Inc., who spearheaded the charitable event along with La Crème in St. Jacobs seven years ago.

Koebel went on to explain that the money they raise specifically is used to help women transition into their own apartments, providing furnishing and aiding the program with storage facilities that house donated items.

As of February, the relocation project has helped some 375 women and 485 children leave abusive relationships over the past 11 years.

“It is out there, it happens. Most people don’t realise that it happens so it is just nice that this is an event where the money stays local,” said Koebel.

Last year’s event helped to raise more than $26,000

to assist the charity, all of the funds aiding women and children in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

The first annual event, which Koebel says they threw together in just two months, drew 70 people who were interested in providing support for the cause. Having grown, the event this year they will be drawing in a crowd of 250, with tickets still available

for anyone interested in supporting the cause.

United Way looking to provide grant support to Wellesley residents’ community projects FAISAL ALI THE UNITED WAY WATERLOO Region Communities group is looking to support small, community-driven projects in the Wellesley Township through its community matching grant program.

Whether it’s with something as simple as installing a park bench, holding a community barbeque or beautifying a part of the township, United Way is offering grants of up to $500 to community members to help make those visions a reality.

“The community matching grants that are available in Wellesley Township are grants that have been made available through the partnership with United Way and with the Township of Wellesley,” explained Nancy Bird, vice-president of resource mobilization for the local United Way. The organization is specifically targeting residentled initiatives in the township, explained Bird.

“So it wouldn’t be for an established agency, like a service delivery agency.

We’re not looking at organized, registered charities or other groups. It needs to be really resident-driven,” she said. She added that service organizations like the Lions Club, would be

considered for the grant.

Filling out a grant application can seem daunting, and for that reason the United Way is more than willing to work with people on their community project ideas. The organization has a dedicated office space at the township office in Wellesley to meet with applicants and talk about their ideas.

“So I think encouraging people if you have an idea, even if it’s not maybe fully developed yet, if you want to talk to us or even like put in an application, we’ll give feedback or we can ask questions,” she said.

It’s perhaps closer to a partnership than a straight grant, as United Way is offering to match in dollars whatever the applicants contribute toward the project, and the contribution doesn’t necessarily have to be in cash.

“They might get supplies donated from someplace, they may have volunteer hours that are then valued at approximately $16 an hour – we look at a living wage for Waterloo Region. And that’s sort of what they’re bringing to the table along with their idea,” said Bird.

Drop-in programs add to mental health services available through the WCHC ALI WILSON WOOLWICH COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE is offering a variety of drop-in programs, recognizing that not everyone’s needs can be met with typical structured sessions for addressing mental health, for instance.

The move reflects a growing demand for counselling services.

“Many primary care organizations as well as

community mental health organizations have seen an increase in the number of people trying to access services, so we are not alone in seeing an increase in the number of referrals for mental health counselling. One of the ways that we have tried to increase the availability of supports for our clients and for community residents is partnering with different organizations that pro-

vide services,” said Lynda Kohler, WCHC program co-ordinator, noting the addition of support workers from CMHA. “One thing that we have been challenged with is people who are waiting on a waitlist either for a Canadian Mental Health or for our own internal counsellors, so we are offering a drop in program once a month for anybody that is waiting for counselling to

come in.”

Every third Tuesday of the month from 10-11 a.m., the mental health resources and information session is offered with no registration required. The drop-in program will help you learn about helpful resources to support yourself, your family and friends.

Woolwich Community Services food bank looking to stock the shelves with spring food and fund drive ALI WILSON WOOLWICH COMMUNITY SERVICES IS looking for the community’s support during the spring food and fund drive, the organization’s chance to stock their shelves until the fall drive.

The food bank at WCS provides a monthly food hamper to low income individuals and families living in Woolwich Township and the northern part of Wellesley Township. Each hamper is created to suit the specific needs of the recipient size and intended to last only five days.

“For some families it is keeping food on the table, for others it is assisting them by lowering their food costs, so that the money saved can go towards another necessary household bill,” explained Tina Reed, WCS’ coordinator of community support, of the program’s intent.

Hampers include donated canned, non-perishable food items and hygiene items when available, as well as perishable items such as fresh milk, margarine, bread, apples and carrots which are purchased with cash donations. With the support of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region as well as local farmers and community members, hampers also include frozen meat for one meal.

“It’s not a set curriculum – she has a range of topics that she can discuss. So she does like to ask participants what they would like to learn about in the session, is there anything that they would like to know more about and she focuses on that,” she added.

Offered for youth specifically, Sid Bater, a youth therapist, will be facilitating what’s called the fireside hangout.

As living with anxiety and depression can be lonely and isolating, the fireside hangout is an informal, relaxing place to meet others. It provides an open and accepting environment to discover youths’ strengths, how to

move forward in life, and most importantly show you that you’re not alone, he noted.

The program came to fruition after parents identified a void for a no-pressure support group for kids and teens struggling with anxiety and depression.

“Some, for example, don’t even get out of the house to go to school – they just can’t do that. So it was something where it would be safe enough that you could have get out to something or go to a group or something like that, but not something where it’s going to be a diehard therapeutic group where you’re going to be called on to give something. Anxiety obviously is going to hold you back from wanting to be there,” said Bater.

Providing connection is a driving force for the group he explains, anxiety and depression can make you feel very alone and isolated and while many peo-

ple are affected, traditional strategies don’t always help. Instead, they hope to provide an environment to show people they are not alone, form a sense of connectivity and provide a platform to facilitate treatment.

“Anxiety is one of the largest issues that we have in North America. Anxiety and depression by far top the mental health charts, but anxiety is also one of the most treatable and that part doesn’t get out often because we put people into a structured program and that’s not going to do it for everyone,” Bater said. “The main thing I want is for people to know that there is a safe place, ‘I’m not going to be judged and I can be there I don’t have to say anything if I don’t want to.’”

“My hope is that people will feel safe enough there, feel that there is a place for them.”

The fireside hangout is

a drop-in program with no registration required offered for youth ages 16 to 21 at WCHC in St. Jacobs.

The upcoming sessions are March 22 and April 5 from 6-8 p.m.

An online mental health and wellbeing service, it offers self-help programmes, creative outlets and a community to help with everyday stressors or major life events. Support is provided in a safe and anonymous environment available 24/7, 365.

New head for MCC Ontario Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Ontario has picked John Head as the organization’s new executive director.

He replaces Rick Cober Bauman who last fall became the executive director of Mennonite Central Committee Canada.

Head joined MCC Ontario as associate executive director in 2014, focusing on operations. Since the departure of Cober Bauman last fall, he has served as interim executive director.

Prior to his current role, he held various senior finance and HR roles in private industry while serving as elder

and home church leader in his church, and voluntary treasurer of a non-profit organization. Head has taken part in a number of short-term mission trips to Lebanon, Albania, Mexico, Guatemala and Haiti.

“I am honoured to have been selected,” said Head in a statement released this week, “I’m eager to get started officially and continue to learn more about MCC. I look forward to supporting staff and meeting the many people who help make our work so meaningful and our many generous supporters.”

Head was the choice of MMCO’s board of directors following a recruitment process.

“After an exhaustive recruitment process, John’s calm, steady strength, vision and leadership brought him the enthusiastic endorsement of the search committee,” said board chair Karen Cornies.

Police support injection sites Waterloo Regional Police gave their support to opening of supervised injection sites in the region. In a letter to council last week, Chief Bryan Larkin said the sites could effectively reduce overdose fatalities in the community.

“We acknowledge that supervised injection services won’t solve the overall

opioid crisis that is sweeping across our nation; however, it will potentially reduce the mortality associated to overdoses. This cannot be ignored, saving lives needs to be a priority for all of us, as well as the safety and wellness of our community,” he said in a statement.

A feasibility study by the region, released last month, found that in addition to saving lives, the sites could reduce public injecting and needle sharing, and help connect drug-users to addiction treatment, as well as other health and social services.

The region is currently looking at opening two such sites in Kitchener and Cambridge, as well as a third that would be mobile. At these sites, adults

would be able to bring and use illicit drugs under the supervision of trained medical personnel. A similar site was opened in Toronto last year.

North America’s first legal injection facility, Insite, was opened in 2003 in Vancouver. Last year, Insite had 175,464 visits by 7,301 individuals in the city, and intervened in 2,151 overdoses.

Since the site began 15 years ago, there have been zero deaths from overdose.

New ambulances for region Waterloo Region council last week approved the purchase of 10 ambulances at a cost of $1.5-million.

Four of the ten ambulances will be added as new additions to the region’s fleet, while the remaining six are to replace current vehicles.

Two of the four new vehicles were purchased to accommodate the two 12-hour ambulance shifts that were added back in February. The other two are to help with out-of-service vehicles in the fleet, and for special events. The addition of four vehicles to the Region’s service was approved by council in December as part of budget deliberations.

With the two 12-hour shifts, the number of paramedics deployed during peak hours (4 p.m.) is 23 ambulances and three rural first-response units.

Police warn of identity fraud after mail thefts in Elmira MAIL THEFTS IN ELMIRA last week have the regional police warning people to regularly collect their mail.

Waterloo Regional Police received reports of several thefts from mailboxes on March 7 in the Snyder Avenue and Church Street area of Elmira.

One of the suspects, described as female, 5’ to 5’2” tall, 160 pounds with a heavy build is said to have attended six different apartment buildings, forced open mailboxes and stole the contents from inside. She was last seen wearing a light grey puffy waist-length jacket with light coloured fur around the trim of the hood, black pants and light ankle

height hiking boots with a fur trim.

Police are also looking for a suspect vehicle described as a possible four-door 2000 Nissan Pathfinder, dark in colour with stock silver aluminum alloy rims and tinted windows. The vehicle was last seen heading north on Snyder Avenue.

5:45 PM | Waterloo Regional Police responded to a report of a collision in north of Elmira. A cyclist, who was traveling east on Sandy Hills Road, was struck by a passing eastbound pickup truck. The 35-year-old male cyclist was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The 19-year-old male driver of the pickup truck was charged with ‘careless driving.’

7:00 AM | A school bus collided with a pickup truck on Perth Line 67 in Perth East, prompting a response from Perth County OPP and Perth County Paramedic Services. There were no students on the bus at the time of the collision, and alternative transportation arrangements were made. The driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

1:54 PM | Wellington County OPP received a report of a break-in sometime overnight at the Emmanuel Christian High School in Fergus. The investigation revealed that a suspect had entered the school overnight and removed some property and cash. A suspect was identified and spoken to. A 17-year-old male from Centre Wellington was charged with ‘break and enter’ and ‘possession of marijuana under 30 grams.’ He was released on a Promise to Appear.

2:15 PM | Wellington County OPP responded to a report of a robbery on McGivern Street in Moorefield. Two males wearing disguises entered the RBC Bank and stole an undetermined amount of cash. One suspect was carrying a handgun. The males left the bank and got into a vehicle that may have been operated by a third party. The vehicle is described as being a black four-door sedan and was last seen travelling north on County Road 10/ McGivern Street towards County Road 8. OPP are actively investigating this incident. To really just provide a little bit of extra resource and leverage to make it happen in their community.”

Put in 10 hours towards a tree-planting project in the township? United Way could match that with $160 of grant money to help purchase seeds and other supplies, for example.

The grant program launched last year, but the applications have only just started to come in, said Bird.

Up to $500 is being offered per project, but there is a total of $5,000 earmarked for grants in Wellesley this year, and the grants are given out on a first-come-first-serve basis. For that reason, Bird is encouraging people interested to apply early, even if their projects aren’t until later in the year.

Currently, Community Matching Grants aren’t available in neighbouring Woolwich or Wilmot townships.

Ford as Tory head puts anti-Wynne vote to the test ONTARIO’S PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVES REALLY have to hope the anyone-butWynne movement sweeping the province really means anyone.

In picking Doug Ford as the party’s new leader, the Tories are really putting voters to the test. They, and many Ontarians, may even end up wishing they’d stuck with Patrick Brown instead.

Supporters are taking great pains to stress that Ford is not his brother, the late Rob Ford, who’s many personal demons played out very publically during his time as mayor of Toronto. We may not be treated to videos of a substance-addled Ford talking out of school ... or simply talking gibberish, but the comparisons will persist. And there is plenty of video of the elder Ford being less than politically correct.

Atop the list will be his defences of the younger Ford’s mayoralty, along with the brothers’ short-lived show on the equally short-lived Sun News Network.

Then there are the comparisons to one Donald J. Trump.

That’s almost its own meme these days, but there are similarities, from being born on third base and inheriting daddy’s money to the crude, everyman persona. As with Trump, Ford also courted religious and social conservative groups, though without the dog-whistle issues much more prevalent in the U.S. The comparison also extends to the last American election, in which the Democrats picked the one person – Hillary Clinton – who could possibly lose an election to the bombastic Trump.

This is all manna for Wynne and NDP leader Andrea Horwath.

While Ford has remained relatively low key – at least for him – we’ve got a few months until the provincial election. Handlers will be trying to keep him under wraps, concentrating on policy and playing up the very prevalent anti-Wynne Liberal sentiment. As with Trump, no good will come of the leader going off script.

The PCs will also be moving quickly to heal the internal rifts. If getting rid of Brown was an internal putsch, it’s almost certainly backfired. Worse still, the selection process for a new leader – admittedly rushed – had problems. And the reputed frontrunner, Christine Elliott, won more ridings and votes than Ford, though lost the leadership under the formula devised by the party (shades of the Trump/Clinton divide in 2016). Very few of the party’s MPPs and candidates backed Ford.

All of that adds up to the Tories having a few hills to climb even before we go to the polls June 7.

As for the voters, we’re already not overly impressed.

The Conservatives still top opinion polls – Wynne is simply reviled – so the party has that going for it. But the voters Ford courted as the kind who were already going to vote PC. But a survey prior to last weekend’s leadership contest found that for every middle-ground (i.e. not an already decided partisan) voter Ford could win over, two were less likely to vote Conservative as an alternative.

That’s where Wynne – counting on the vote of the boughtand-paid for civil servants and Ontarians not paying attention to the scandals, corruption and incompetence – hopes to see opposition votes split between the Tories and the NDP, letting the Liberals crawl up the middle.

In choosing Ford, the Progressive Conservatives may have handed Wynne a gift – another four years of making things worse for Ontario – which is certainly pas un cadeaux for the rest of us.

Liberals and Conservatives alike have to wait until June to find out what’s really at the end of the rainbow.

Trump and Kim – talks are just for show, but should go ahead nonetheless WORLD AFFAIRS I THINK I KNOW why President Donald Trump suddenly agreed to hold talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un after a year of mutual threats and verbal abuse.

Anything short of a complete breakdown at the talks would virtually guarantee Trump next year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

Moreover, it would seem bigger and shinier than the one they gave to Barack Obama, because Obama hadn’t actually earned it.

He got it just for being a nice guy.

Oh, no, wait a minute.

If they gave it to Trump they’d also have to give it to Kim Jong-un, and that would be even sillier. Yet there probably won’t be a complete breakdown at the talks, which are due

by May, because both men are strongly motivated to make them look successful.

Kim’s minimum goal is to establish North Korea as a legitimate sovereign state that is accepted by other sovereign states (including the United States) as an equal. Just having a oneon-one discussion with Trump about the security problems of the Korean peninsula gives him that.

He will do his best to keep the meeting civil, and under no circumstances will he break off the talks first.

Trump’s main goal is to look good – to get a ‘win’ – and Kim’s advisers will have told him to let Trump win something. It doesn’t much matter what, so long as Trump can wave it in the air and claim victory when he gets home. But it will definitely not be an enforceable agreement to dismantle North Korea’s new nuclear weapons and their delivery vehicles.

Look at it from Kim Jong-un’s standpoint.

Saddam Hussein gave up his nuclear weapons program (involuntarily) after the first Gulf War in 1990-91, and 12 years later the United States invaded

Iraq, overthrew Saddam, and hanged him. Well, the new Iraqi regime provided the rope and the gallows, but the U.S. invasion would never have happened if Saddam had really had nuclear weapons.

Libya’s Colonel Muammar Gaddafi gave up his quest for nuclear weapons too. It never really amounted to much, but it worried Western powers enough to make them leave him alone most of the time.

Then Gaddafi handed over all his pathetic scraps of nuclear weapons-related technologies – and NATO airpower subsequently backed the tribal rebels who finished him off with a bayonet up his backside.

So if the U.S. sees you as a problem and you value your life, don’t stop until you get your nukes, and never give them up. The North Koreans understand this lesson very well.

No promise Trump could make would persuade the North Koreans to surrender their nukes. As far as Kim is concerned, nuclear deterrence against

the United States has now been achieved, and he’d be mad to give it up again.

It’s a pretty flimsy form of deterrence – his rockets aren’t very accurate and his nuclear weapons don’t always explode in a fully satisfactory way – but even a 10 per cent chance that North Korea could kill half a million Americans in a ‘revenge from the grave’ attack should be enough to deter the U.S. from using nukes on North Korea.

A nuclear war between the U.S. and North Korea would probably kill ten times as many North Koreans including practically every member of the regime – Pyongyang would be a glowing, radioactive pit – so Kim’s regime would never initiate such a conflict. But he needs the assurance that the United States will never resort to nuclear weapons either, and only North Korean nuclear weapons can provide the necessary deterrence.

You may deplore this kind of thinking, but it is DYER | 8

More invasive tech is not the solution to the perils of social media and device addiction EDITOR'S NOTES THE SOCIAL MEDIA BLITZ officials are using to quell would-be partiers around Waterloo’s universities come St. Patrick’s Day – warnings about repercussions likely to be more useful than any attempts to convince students partying isn’t cool – will undoubtedly be used against any who do take part in the festivities.

Such is the surveillance state that we’ve built for ourselves, allowing companies and the police state to invade our lives despite their ill intentions ... and gleefully joining in by not taking even the simplest attempts at protecting our privacy.

Outside of the potential for Waterloo street parties, it’s a safe bet you or somebody you know will post online photographic evidence of the weekend’s festivities. Seems harmless enough, right? Well, maybe.

At a time when govern-

ments are increasingly bent on taking away our privacy and other rights, we’re often our own worst enemies when it comes to exposing ourselves to the world, literally, in many cases.

For young people in particular, the tendency to post the details of their lives on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites comes with a host of perils.

Even young people are starting to become aware of that. While social media, such as Facebook and Instagram, are popular for sharing photos and other aspects of people’s lives, many users are worried that their postings could have an impact on their job prospects. Such young social media users think that something they posted could come back to haunt them.

A form of “day-after remorse” seems to be evident. An increasing number of users say that they have removed or taken down a photo or other social media posting because they feared it could lead to repercussions with an

passwords right on the spot so that the interviewers can poke around their online lives.

Already a dubious phenomenon, the ironically named social media sites – led by the likes of Facebook, Twitter and a thousand variants of Instagram and Pinterest – has descended into little more than partisan flame wars, blatant marketing and outright propaganda.

Coupled with the undermining of privacy – embraced by governments not the least bit eager to protect their citizens – the sorry state of affairs should leave no one upset if they all suddenly went away tomorrow. Such would be a reason to rejoice, in fact.

There’s very little social about such sites, at least in the conventional human sense of the word.

The occasional use is one thing – though the sites, along with the ubiquitous Google, are mining data, joined by the likes of the NSA – but there are many people, many of them young, who spend too much time and think too little of the consequences.

More than just too much information, poor judgment and bullying, such time spent online has societal implications.

The tech companies are developing increasingly sophisticated tools for gathering up large swathes of online data – the things you post and like on Facebook, for instance – in order to both predict your behaviour and to sway it.

This goes beyond targeted advertising, which is itself somewhat problematic.

Even those who helped develop social media sites and software are warning of the perils of technology, particularly the tendency to addiction – intentionally programmed – and the loss of privacy. While such revelations are useful, they’re often followed by positing “solutions” that involve yet more technology, rather than actual solutions, such as laws forbidding data mining, collection of personal data and demanding rapid expiration of personal information, under penalty of civil and criminal charges.

That, however, is beyond the pale, as governments

are the leading violators of your privacy.

At this point, expecting governments and tech conglomerates to fix the problems they’ve created by intent is like putting the Big Bad Wolf in charge of building houses for the Three Little Pigs. The proposed “remedies” for the ills of social media – taking spa day breaks from your smartphone to counter addiction or installing additional apps to tweak the phones security – are really just defences of the status quo.

“The iniquities of social media, of course, won’t disappear if they’re briefly ignored or contained. Instead, addressing them will require companies like Facebook and Google to be viewed holistically: Rather than an isolated scourge, they’re symptoms of an economic system in which profit supersedes public health and societal stability. The answer lies not in a micro-economy of pseudoconscious nonprofits, books, and startups, but in structures independent of KANNON | 8

employer.

But just because you delete something you’ve posted, that doesn’t mean it’s gone. Chances are it’s been captured by archiving sites and will live on, perhaps longer than you do.

Internet sites like Facebook exist to harvest information, sell it to advertisers and target you with personalized ads. Tracking is the norm, as is collecting as many details as possible of what each of us does online. There’s nothing neutral about most of it: this is not just a sociology study, though, of course, it’s that too.

Leaving aside the issue of why exactly people feel compelled to post the upto-the-second minutia of their lives, there’s a danger of what you post being used against you.

There’s an obvious peril to posting about illicit acts – not uncommon, if not bright – but a less obvious risk comes with not-criminal-but-damning posts sought out by prospective employers. In fact, people going in for interviews are now sometimes asked for Facebook login names and

Does ‘denuclearization’ mean no American nuclear weapons can be located in South Korea, or in the entire region? Given the range of those weapons, how would that make North Korea any safer?

Does it mean dismantling North Korea’s nuclear weapons? Certainly not.

It’s just what Kim had to say to get the talks started.

His ultimate goal is to ‘normalize’ North Korean nukes, as Indian and Pakistani nuclear weapons were eventually accepted as normal. This can only happen if the United States acknowledges a state of mutual nuclear deterrence

between the two countries, which Trump is not yet ready to do. But even by talking to Kim about it, he begins to give the concept substance.

Kim can promise Trump a “moratorium on nuclear and missile tests” because he doesn’t really need more tests. His nuclear weapons and rockets are far fewer and much less sophisticated than their American counterparts, but mutual deterrence can work effectively even when one side has a hundred or a thousand times more nuclear weapons than the other.

So Trump gets an early ‘win,’ and Kim gets to nudge the United States a little closer to an understanding that its future relationship with North Korea will be one of mutual deterrence. Or maybe locking two narcissists in a room is bound to end in tears, but it’s well worth a try.

Minor hockey teams excelling at league, provincial levels Woolwich Minor Hockey Association sees seven teams advance to Ontario semi finals, a new high for the local organization ALI WILSON A RECORD NUMBER OF Woolwich Minor Hockey Association teams have made it to their respective league finals.

Comprised of just under 600 players, WMHA has 39 teams in total. The 39 teams are separated into rep and local league classifications, the rep teams play in the Tri County League, while the local league teams play in the Grand River Local League.

Following the ending of the regular season for rep players, teams were tasked with playing in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association play-downs, which saw teams play a round robin, then quarter finals followed by semi finals and then the finals – dependant on winning the prior series – competition coming from all across Ontario.

For the first time in recent history, WMHA had seven teams competing in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association semi-finals, the most since having six move on to the semis in 2011: Novice AE, Novice A, Minor Atom A, Major Bantam A, Major Midget A, Midget AE and Juvenile A. As of print time, four of the teams were moving into the finals: the Jr. Sugar

Kings (Major Midget A), Midget AE, Major Novice A and Major Bantam A, all of whom will be competing to be named the best in Ontario.

With 225 hockey associations and more than 100,000 players in the OMHA it is quite an accomplishment for these teams to make it this far.

“Even though we are a small ‘A’ centre, we have a strong hockey background in this community and the community backs up our hockey teams very passionately,” said Rob Moyer, president of WMHA. “Our players show a lot of heart, our coaches put time and effort in and our players show up to practice and envelope everything that these coaches are offering which is very, very important.”

While many teams have exceptional stories, exemplifying the success Woolwich has found during this season is the Major Novice team in particular. The boys thus far have not lost a regular-season or playoff game, completely sweeping each series.

As team coach Rob Hall explains it, the success comes down to Woolwich being a great hockey community.

“Honestly I think that

Whether that’s led to a good rest, a bit of rust or somewhere in between remains to be seen.

Still, the Kings were happy to complete the elimination of the Bombers in four straight games with a 5-0 win March 7 at the WMC. The win also marked netminder Tyler Mazzocato’s first shutout of the 2017-18 season.

Entering into the fourth game of the playoffs, the Kings had to have been feeling pretty confident

with their track record. In their first playoff match against the Bombers, the Brampton team had put three goals into the Kings’ net. In the second, the Bombers scored just twice.

And in the third, only one found the back of the net.

It was 3, 2, 1, and all signs were pointing to a 0 this time around.

“I thought that was a

great series for us. I think we got better every game, culminating with the last game, of course,” said head coach Trent Brown.

“Our offensive output was pretty steady. That to me just looks like we got better defensively every game and that helps us play offense as well.”

Opening the shooting frenzy last Wednesday

was Jeremey Goodwin, just five-minutes from the puck-drop, with Ethan Skinner and Kurtis Goodwin picking up the assist.

For the second point, Brampton was down a man to the box, giving Marcel Berube (J. Goodwin, Ethan Skinner) the opportunity for a power play marker at 9:44.

Opening the second

frame up 2-0, the Kings pressed the attack with yet another bottle-knocker seven minutes in, this time potted by Ethan Wiseman (J. Goodwin, Braydon Munn). The game was getting heated as both teams started racking up the infractions.

The Kings were up 4-0 with only 11 minutes left on the clock. Both the Kings and Brampton got slapped with some pretty heavy penalties, including a check from behind and head contact, as the teams were battling now for ev-

ery inch of ice.

Time was running down with the scoreboard staying stubbornly in place. In the final minute of play, Brampton mounted a last desperate attack to end Mazzocato’s shutout bid.

the box and, at the same time, the Bombers pulled their goalie for an extraattacker, turning it into a six-on-four.

However, the open net only allowed Sugar Kings’ Matt MacKay (Tyler McBay) a shorty in the

final 17 seconds of the match, which ended 5-0.

It was a combination of strong offense and an immovable defence that gave the Kings their win, with every player contributing to the effort. The team outshot their opponents more than double with 36 versus the Bombers’ 17. Elmira was 2-7 with the man advantage, while the Bombers were 0-7.

“Jeremey Goodwin had a three-point night. Skinner had two-points. But on a whole, as the series went on everybody who played in the series ended up with at least a point. Our depth is something of a strength for us, and we’re happy to see everybody contributing,” said Brown.

Mazzocato credits his shutout to his teammates for keeping the puck away from the net.

“I think we played very well. We kind of dominated the offensive zone, we gave up very little defensively,” said Mazzocato.

With the first round of the playoffs over, the games are only going to get tougher from here on out. Moving onto the second round are the top four teams of the regular season: Listowel, Stratford,

Elmira and Waterloo.

All the teams swept their respective series except for Waterloo, which played Kitchener to a narrow 4-3 record in the best-of-seven contest. The first-place Listowel team will be taking on Waterloo in the second round, while the second-place Stratford Warriors are set to play Elmira.

It’ll be a challenging round, but Mazzocato is feeling good about the team’s chances. It’s his second year with the Kings, and he’s looking to defend their status as Sutherland Cup champions.

“You got to go into the game the same as every other game: just be ready.

If we can stick to the way we’re playing now I have a lot of confidence that we’re going to do well,” said Mazzocato.

The Sugar Kings will be heading to Stratford tomorrow (Friday) to take on the Warriors for their first match. They’ll be back in Elmira Sunday for their second game, followed by a Monday game in Stratford and a fourth back at home on Wednesday. Game time in Elmira is 7 p.m., but 7:30 p.m. in Stratford.

As president, Moyer says they are very proud and happy for all teams in the finals regardless of their level of play and ask the community to come out and cheer on their home team.

“To win a championship

at any level, whether its league or all-Ontario, is very, very satisfactory to our association because it’s hard to win championships,” said Moyer.

Now only entering into finals play for many, the next few weeks will hopefully reveal some additional banners officially celebrating the local success.

GALEA: Best to plan ahead to avoid late-season awkwardness when “friends” come calling FROM | 9

avoid helping a friend remove his ice hut from the lake.

I only mention this now because, in many areas of the province, ice hut removal deadlines are approaching fast. This means the average ice angler will soon be discovering that they have more “friends” than they previously thought.

Beware though, most anglers who need help removing an ice hut will

not hit you with the blunt approach. No, they’ll trick you into being a good person, if possible. Therefore the first step in avoiding this back-breaking effort is to recognize the subtle signs.

For instance, if an ice angler you hardly know sends you a thoughtful card and a dozen roses, take this as a hint they will soon be calling and asking for help to get their ice hut off the lake. Likewise, don’t be fooled if that same angler invites you to go fishing on

the very last day of the ice hut removal deadline.

I’m not saying don’t go, of course. That would be ridiculous. I’m just suggesting be prepared with credible excuses that will help you avoid the work when the fishing is done.

It used to be that the simple declaration of having 12 slipped discs and a sciatica problem was enough to get you out of the job. But that’s not always the case anymore.

Some savvy ice hut owners I know now keep an assort-

ment of back and lumbar supports as well as a good supply of Rub A535 in their huts for just such an occasion. Worse still, they know how to use it.

No, if you are going to avoid helping a “friend” remove an ice hut these days, you are going to have to up your game.

I prefer to fake being in a coma, but sometimes that’s just not practical. In lieu of that, I have found a simple response is often the best.

For instance, when a

“friend” calls to ask for help removing an ice hut, say “Sure, I’ll help. I told my doctor I’m not going to let this chronic explosive diarrhea keep me from getting out there. Would you mind picking me up though? My truck is being professionally cleaned.”

This will work on most occasions but again is no guarantee. In fact, it loses effectiveness in inverse proportion to the hut removal deadlines proximity and the sheer size of the hut.

If the truth were to be

told, the best way of avoiding ice hut removal duty is planning a trip that will keep you outside of the country for the two weeks leading up to the removal deadline.

Having said all this, it is easier to help your “friend” remove a hut than go to all this trouble.

Figure out what you want to do and be prepared. As I said, in many parts of the province, the deadline is looming.

I just hope you get this column in time. The Internet is horrible here in Bora Bora.

Young Wellesley soccer player selected to go to Munich event ALI WILSON A WELLESLEY SOCCER PLAYER has been chosen as one of three Canadians to join the FC Bayern Campus in Munich next month to compete against the FC Bayern Youth Academy.

Representing the top talent in North America, Owen-Dillon Holmes, a Wellesley Public School student, was selected last fall to be part of the ID camp near Buffalo, NY, alongside players from Canada and New York State.

From there he made the 14-player team that’s headed to Munich. Players will be attending from Canada, the United States

and Puerto Rico.

This is Holmes first time taking part in the event, as well as it being the first time 10/11 year olds have been able to attend FC Bayern Munich, which is one of the biggest clubs in world football and has a proven track record for developing young players.

“We’re extremely proud of this achievement, and thrilled of the opportunity to represent in such important event,” said Sean Holmes, Owen’s dad.

Holmes plays for the Kitchener-based Global Premier Soccer Academy.

He plays any position and has been recognized for his ball control, skill and speed with shot accuracy.

For the last three years he has been playing the highest level for his age – in 2016/2017 he had the most team set play goals, last year he had the most assists.

In the past he has won individual awards at three separate events in skills and juggling, MVP in the Waterloo futsal league, and three championship wins in the last year.

Holmes will arrive in Germany on April 14, where for the next week he will have training sessions with FC Bayern staff coaches, compete in friendly matches, tour Allianz Arena Stadium as well as the campus before heading back home a week later.

“The region has contributed $2.2 million over four years, and the agreement we have with the region is that we will build $8.8 million worth of infrastructure in the region. So they’re making an investment of one-quarter of the infrastructure that we built in the region,” explained Hogan.

“And that’s the guaranteed amount. It’s likely going to be more than that because we do have about a 14-times multiplier over the project in general.

Like the municipalities have put in between $17 and $20 million, and we’re spending almost $300 million. So basically the municipalities are leveraging their dollars regionally 14 to 16 times.”

FOOD IS SAID TO bring people together – and in southwestern Ontario, that’s exactly what University of Guelph Prof. Hannah Tait Neufeld is hoping it will do for local Indigenous communities.

She’s launching a fouryear research project called “Bridging Place and Social Spaces: Building Healthful Relationships Towards Indigenous Food Sovereignty in Southwestern Ontario,” to address traditional food access and knowledge barriers in this region.

Tait Neufeld, a family relations and applied nutrition professor, has received support from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research for the study. The research funding will go towards documenting community examples – in the form of images and stories – to support and reinforce traditional food-growing practices across various locations.

She calls it “land-based education.”

Tait Neufeld is teaming up with diverse research partners, including Adrianne Lickers Xavier and the Our Sustenance project in the community of Six Nations, as well as with Guelph-area urban food projects and with the University of Guelph campus community.

She’ll also work with Prof. Kim Anderson, whose research interests include the health and wellbeing of Indigenous families.

Internet access is not only becoming increasingly vital for business in the office, but on the farm as well as farmers employ ever more sophisticated technologies in the field.

FAISAL ALI WHETHER IT’S OUT ON the farm, at the store or at home, access to a fast and reliable Internet connection has become an all but essential commodity for modern economies. Yet even as the larger cities in the province enjoy superior speeds and greater market competition, rural and remote communities are often left out of the loop.

The South Western Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) is working to change that. The not-forprofit collective is funding the creation of a large, high-speed internet network in the south west of the province that aims to provide rural communities with the same speeds and same choices as their city counterparts.

Construction for the multi-million dollar project is expected to begin in mid-2018, and SWIFT is asking rural Canadians

to help decide where they need to prioritize building first.

“We should have shovels in the ground this year, which is very exciting,” said Tammy McQueen, SWIFT’s communications manager.

The goal is to connect all the participating communities in southwestern Ontario – about 3.5-million people, or 350 communities – with a fibre optic network. The group is investing in fibre optics specifically because, unlike wiring, the technology is considered “future-proof.”

Once the fibre is laid in the ground, internet speeds can be increased indefinitely into the future as demand grows, using the same fibre optic network.

Crucially, the network would be “open access,” meaning any telecommunications company would be able to provide Internet services on the same net-

work.

Fibre optics in Ontario are often run to the Internet Exchange Point at 151 Front St. in Toronto, meaning those living in close proximity to city often have far more service providers to choose from.

It’s only when you move to more remote communities that the number of service providers with networks in the area become increasingly sparse, leading to inflated prices and monopolistic practices. Providers are often unwilling to invest large amounts into building their own networks to service remote communities with small populations, leaving them with few options.

“If you are in an office tower, two blocks from 151 Front St., you have a choice of about 50 different service providers to get services from,” explained SWIFT CEO Geoff Hogan.

“Whereas if you are

somewhere in Wellesley Township, and you want to get a contract for those services, there’s probably only two companies that can give you access. So once SWIFT is in place and we have this super fast highway all the way to 151 Front St., you’re actually getting the ability to have 50 people compete for your business.”

Construction for the network’s backbone is starting in mid- to late2018, and is expected to be completed by 2021.

As the backbone goes online, the next step would be to connect individual communities, homes and business to the it. It’s at that point that people will start to experience faster service.

The venture has attracted $180 million in combined funding from the federal and provincial government, another $90 million from the private sector, and approximately

Research participant Xavier says the three sisters are key to Six Nations and southwestern Ontario for several reasons.

“Being grown together, the three foods are ideal in a garden,” she says.

“Their growth is actually enhanced by being to-

gether. They form a synergistic relationship. When cooked, they provide enough food to sustain a person.”

Traditionally, she says, the three sisters would have been ideal to keep a community healthy even in times of drought, or when animals for food were scarce.

“Store-bought foods tend to be processed, less healthy and expensive, and we’re eating too much of them,” she says.

“In southwestern Ontario, Indigenous communities have expressed an interest in consuming more locally harvested foods.”

She says urban Indigenous families and youth frequently relocate to cities for work or school, and are also in need of

support to reinforce the important relationship between food and local environments.

But her study’s not only related to increasing access to traditional foods.

A significant portion will be dedicated to capturing images and stories to facilitate knowledge exchange.

For example, participants will take photos where foods are harvested, hunted or shared in the

community of Six Nations and in nearby municipalities such as Kitchener-Waterloo and at the University of Guelph.

She says the photos will become the objects of interviews, and she and her research team will collect stories behind the images.

The photographs and digital stories will be displayed at local events to advocate for the continued relationship build-

ing, in support of landbased Indigenous food initiatives.

“Sharing practices, increasing food knowledge and access through increased social supports will contribute towards the health and wellbeing of individuals, Nations and Territories,” she says.

“Food is a bridge, and when our research project is complete, I hope food has led the way for all of us to know each other better.”

SWIFT: The goal of the network is to be a shared resource FROM | 13

ing bids from a group of 28 pre-approved telecommunications companies, including Bell Canada and Rogers, to build different sections of the network.

The companies will own the networks themselves, but are bound to follow SWIFT’s rules, including allowing other companies to provide services on their networks. They will also be incentivized to provide services to small communities where the profitability may be marginal.

“So really SWIFT is all about building an affordable, open-access network that will make it easier, faster and more affordable for service providers to deliver those services to consumers,” said McQueen.

Right now, SWIFT is asking Ontarians – particularly those in rural areas – for information on their current Internet service via an online survey.

The goal of SWIFT is to connect 3.5-million people in Ontario in some 350 communities and 14 First Nations with an ultra high-speed network.

The information will help the group decide which communities to start connecting first.

Those interested in taking part in the survey can find it on the SWIFT website. The survey is also being promoted on the Wellesley Township website.

“It’s important,” said Wellesley Mayor Joe Nowak about filling out the survey. “It’s important to let the SWIFT people recognize the need out in Wellesley Township.”

“It’s going to help the economy, it’s going to help the farming community for sure,” he added of

the fibre optic network. “I do know we have a lot of the on-farm shops ... and it always amazes me as to how they’ve been able to attract the business that they’ve attracted. And I think having the Internet at their disposal will go a long way in making their businesses even stronger.”

More than a few laughs, and the music of the jazz age to boot Drayton Entertainment production of The Drowsy Chaperone opens Mar. 28 at St. Jacobs Playhouse STEVE KANNON SPRING IS IMMINENT, AND we can only hope that it helps liven things up. In the meantime, we do have The Drowsy Chaperone, billed as a musical inside a comedy, to brighten up the season, taking us back to a simpler time.

The critically acclaimed musical – it received five Tony Awards, more than any other musical of 2006 – opens March 28 at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse.

The show tells the story of a modern day musical theatre addict known simply as “Man in Chair.”

To chase his blues away, he drops the needle on his favourite LP – the 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone.

From the crackle of his hi-fi, the musical magically bursts to life on-stage, telling the tale of a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up show business to get married, her producer who sets out to sabotage the nuptials, her chaperone, the debonair groom, the dizzy chorus girl, the Latin lover and a pair of gangsters who double as pastry chefs.

It’s all about fun for fun’s sake, a world of colourful sets and upbeat music, evoking all the glitter of the jazz age.

“The Drowsy Chaperone is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to old-fashioned musical comedy – if you love song and dance musicals like Singin’ in the Rain and Anything Goes, you will love this show,” says Drayton Entertainment’s artistic director, Alex Mustakas.

“It’s ferociously funny, fast paced, and jam-packed with show-stopping dance numbers, upbeat songs and over-the-top characters.”

Outside of Man in Chair’s reminiscences, there are his comedic and sometimes acerbic reflections on the state of the

Adding a new twist to the show-within-a-show scenario, Nadajewski’s quirky Man in Chair provides a hilarious running commentary, including back-stories about the fictitious performers and quips about the ridiculous plot lines as he giddily applauds

the production numbers from his front row seat right on stage.

The Drowsy Chaperone introduces us to celebrity Janet Van De Graaf, who vows to leave the stage to settle down with her oil tycoon beau Robert Martin.

This is to the chagrin of her wily producer Mr. Feldzieg, who will stop at nothing

to keep his star performer in the limelight as the featured attraction in his Feldzieg’s Follies.

Jayme Armstrong, who has performed in numerous Drayton Entertainment productions including Thoroughly Modern Millie, Singin’ in the Rain and Anything Goes, takes on the role of conflicted starlet Janet Van De Graaf. Stratford and Charlottetown festivals alumnus Kyle Golemba is her lovesick mogul fiancé, Robert. Cliff Saunders, seen in The 39 Steps last season, is the devious producer Mr. Feldzieg.

A host of other comical characters become embroiled in the plot to prevent Janet’s marriage – veteran actress Gabrielle Jones is Janet’s inebriated Chaperone, who is supposed to keep her away from Robert until the wedding despite being distracted by her own hijinks.

Andrew Scanlon, who appeared in the U.S. tour and Toronto productions of Kinky Boots, is self-proclaimed famed Latin lover Aldolpho, who is out for seduction. Shaw Festival alumna Glynis Ranney is the daffy wedding hostess, Mrs. Tottendale, with funny man Keith Savage as her loyal butler, Underling.

Tim Porter, who has become a staple in the Drayton Entertainment pantos, is Robert’s jovial best man, George; Jennifer Thiessen, who appeared in Beauty and the Beast, is ditzy flapper Kitty, who hopes to take Janet’s place in the Follies; Gregory Pember and Aaron Walpole, who both appeared in Rock of Ages, are two goofy gangsters disguised as pastry chefs determined to stall the nuptials.

With music and lyrics by Tony Award winners Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison and book by Tony

Award winners Bob Martin and Don McKellar, the story is Canadian in its roots.

Originally created as a 40-minute musical for Martin’s stag and doe back in 1998 by friends who were writers, performers and comedians in Toronto, the show went through several iterations before opening on Broadway and becoming a smash hit.

Community Information Page Important Information about Vendor Regulation During Elmira Maple Syrup Festival, Saturday, April 7th, 2018 This notice will be of interest to any person or organization that is considering selling food and/or merchandise in Elmira on Festival Day. Please be advised that any person or organization not already regulated by the Festival Committee, or is not an established business and member of the Downtown Elmira BIA, must apply for a Salesperson License from the Township of Woolwich to sell food or goods at the Maple Syrup Festival. The deadline to apply for a Salesperson’s Licence is Monday, March 26th. Each application must be accompanied by the required fee of $60. Funds collected will cover the cost of advertising and enforcement, and the remaining revenue will be donated back to the festival for disbursement to local charities.

The Elmira Maple Syrup Festival Committee works diligently each year to create the best and safest Festival possible for both vendors and visitors. Proceeds from the Festival benefit our community in many ways. In recent years, the number of unlicensed food and non-food vendors setting up in the downtown core and surrounding areas of Elmira has increased to the point where pedestrian traffic has been negatively impacted. Safety concerns have been raised by vendors, agencies and community members and action is required. The Maple Syrup Festival Committee operates under a Salesperson’s Licence from the Township and is responsible for organizing the vendors in the Outdoor Mall in downtown Elmira. The Festival Committee also organizes the vendors who operate on the grounds of the Woolwich Memorial Centre property.

Members of the Downtown Elmira BIA may set up tables that do not project more than 1 metre out from their storefront without a Salesperson’s Licence. However, downtown businesses who plan to offer food or goods not usually sold in their stores, or share their table with a Third-Party Vendor, must apply for a Salesperson’s Licence. Please note that BBQs must be TSSA-certified and may not be set up within 10 metres of a building, food vendors must have Health Unit approval, and electrical hook-ups must have inspection certificates. The Township has circulated information directly to the downtown stores through the distribution list of the Elmira Business Improvement Area. Store owners should contact the Township’s Licensing Officer if they have not received the information by email or need help understanding what is allowed.

How to Apply for a Salesperson’s Licence You will find the Salesperson’s Licence Application Form available on our website in the list of Applications, Forms, and Licenses found under “Doing Business.” Completed application forms may be submitted to our Licensing Officer, along with the required $60 application fee, by Monday, March 26th.

The Township reserves the right to approve or deny any application for Salesperson’s Licence.

Enforcement: Municipal Law Enforcement Officers will be out on Saturday, April 7th checking to make sure vendors are properly licensed. The Township’s Licensing By-law 47-2013 sets the fine for operating without a Salesperson’s Licence at $350.00.

The Township of Woolwich is currently reviewing our Animal Control By-law and is seeking public input on the proposed changes. To be considered, feedback must be received in writing by March 25, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. The Animal Control By-law provides for the regulation, restriction, and prohibition of the keeping of animals in the Township of Woolwich, including matters around dogs, kennels, and exotic animals.

Copies of the draft by-law are available on our website at www.woolwich.ca under the Township Services, By-laws section or at the Township Administrative Building, 24 Church Street West, Elmira. When viewing the draft by-law, any new sections are in red and any material to be removed has a strikethrough. McKeag, Robert Alex “Bob” Passed away, with his loving wife and best friend, for 63 years, and family by his side, on Friday, March 9, 2018, at the age of 84 years. Bob was the beloved husband of Grace (Toms) McKeag of Elmira. He will be remembered by his daughters Katherine (Kitty) and Roy (Buck) Stahle of Listowel, Corylin (Cory) McKeag and Ron of Alberta, and his son Jason and his fiancée Lynn of Hamilton; his grandchildren Rick (Monica) Stahle, Rob (Jessica) Stahle, and great-granddaughters Lacey and Ebony Stahle. He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews. Bob started work at Metro Toronto News Company and was promoted to supervisor and then manager of the magazine wholesale division. In the 70s he was manager of New London Distributors. He spent his last 20 years as General Manager, Vice President and part owner of Kitchener News Company in Waterloo.

He was a Past Master of Glenrose Lodge AF & AM 628, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for the past 40 years, and he was also an avid cribbage player. The family received their relatives and friends on Monday, March 12, 2018 from 7-9 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Private family interment in Elmira Union Cemetery and reception followed. As expressions of sympathy, donations to KidsAbility School Authority would be appreciated by the family.

Coconut oil a good choice in baking

FAISAL ALI WHEN WELLESLEY PUBLIC SCHOOL students Kate Rudy and Ashley MacGillivray were asked what they were passionate about, they not only came back with an answer, they decided to do something more about it. Partnering together, the two Grade 7 students put together a school-wide fundraiser for their project, in what can certainly be described as an A+ effort.

“It’s called a Passion Project. What happens is you choose a project that you’re passionate about, and you write an essay and a slide show presentation about it. We chose homelessness and, as an add-on, we did a fundraiser,” explains Rudy.

“We figured out how horrible the homelessness in Toronto has gotten and we really wanted to help in some way,” adds MacGillivray. Every week, their class would watch the CNN news broadcast, and the two students say they were motivated by the CNN Heroes segment to come up with way to make a difference.

Rudy and MacGillivray wrote their own separate essays as part of the project, and are working on a joint presentation to the class. But the two certainly went above and beyond what was expected when they organized a school-

like band-aids, tissues, canned-fruit, toothpaste and toothbrushes, granola bars and water. Kindergarteners and Grade 7 and 8 students, meanwhile, were asked to bring in money.

All in all, Rudy and MacGillivray were able to raise $151, above their

I should see something happening soon because I use coconut oil to fry my eggs for breakfast and I use it for baking ... surely that will help me lose weight? And I am still waiting for my brain fog to clear.

Today I experimented with this Drop Sugar Cookie recipe, using coconut oil instead of the vegetable oil listed in the recipe. They were so quick to make because they are not rolled like traditional sugar cookies and the dough does not require chilling. And they are delicious! I sprinkled them with coloured coarse sugar before baking but they could be iced for a special occasion – say, green just now. For a chewy cookie, under-bake them slightly and for a crunchy

different types of shelters in Canada,” says MacGillivray.

The students reached out to a shelter in Toronto, the Good Shepherd Ministries, to find out what they and their patrons needed the most in terms of donations. And with the information handy, they

then decided to split their fundraising effort in two parts.

For the first part, students in Grades 1 to 6 were asked to donate items that they could use to create individualized “care packages” for the homeless. These would include a host of essentials,

Q. What happens to garbage once it is interred in a landfill?

A. Through hands-on excavation, archeologist and garbologist Bill Rathje found that a well-maintained, airtight, dry sanitary landfill acts more like a mummifier of trash than a decomposer, reports Edward Humes in his book â&#x20AC;&#x153;Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash.â&#x20AC;?

Fifty-year-old newspaper was readable, steaks and hot dogs intact after decades, guacamole pasty and green after 25 years,

onion peels and carrot tops recognizable after 20, and grass clippings still green after 15.

The slowly decaying material is held in place by surrounding nonbiodegradable plastic, and this â&#x20AC;&#x153;trash matrixâ&#x20AC;? has the unintended benefit of sequestering to some extent toxic materials (paint, motor oil, insecticide and more) from the water table.

Other surprising results: Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rathjeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;First Principle of Food Waste,â&#x20AC;? that is, the more repetitive your diet â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the more you eat the same things day after day â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the less food you waste. Also, during times of expected scarcity, wastage tends to go up, not down; people lay in

more provisions than they actually need, and end up throwing more away.

Finally, well-publicized toxic-material collection days sponsored by sanitation departments may backfire, leading to a surge of toxic waste from those who gather the stuff for disposal but, for some reason, miss the official collection. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the big picture: Americans make more trash than anyone else on the planet, throwing away about 7.1 pounds per person per day, accumulating to some 102 tons over a typical lifetime.

CARE PACKAGES: Not just identifying a societal problem, but doing something to help despite being only 12 years of age, the two have already done an impressive amount to give back to the community.

“Well, we’re both on the WE Team at our school, but that’s more of a group thing. But this time it’s just us,” Rudy.

The WE Team at the school organizes a number of charitable projects, divided into two categories, they explain: community and international.

“So we just finished one.

It was book sale, and it was to raise money for educa-

tion in India. So that was a project we just did. And then we did a community one a little while ago. It was like a sock fundraiser called Toasty Toes,” the Kitchener-based charity, says MacGillivray.

With the fundraising over and the care packages made, the last step is to take the goods to Toronto.

And so committed are the students to the project, they will be taking a day during their March Break to load a big truck with all of the supplies and deliver them to the Good Shepherd.

Drop Sugar Cookies 3/4 cup butter, softened 3/4 cup coconut oil 2 cups white sugar 2 large eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 4 cups all purpose flour, sifted 1-1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt

Cream butter and coconut oil until light, about 3 minutes.

Add sugar and eggs and mix again.

Add vanilla.

Add flour, baking soda and salt, mix until all is combined.

Use a cookie scoop or roll dough into balls, place on greased baking sheets about 1-1/2” apart.

PUT BUSINESS RIGHT HERE.

Press cookies down slightly with your hand.

Sprinkle with coarse sugar if you like.

Bake at 350º F for 15-17 minutes or until they are starting to brown on the bottom.

Cool, then store in an airtight container.

“There’s been a lot of them,” said manager of planning John Scarfone of the comments received, noting the township itself had found the public consultation process to be “lacking.”

The township has been passing along the comments it receives to SNC. The company has acknowledged the feedback, pledging to incorporate the comments into its review of the tower proposal.

“We would like to ensure all residents we are actively working to review the impact the tower would have on the community and will notify residents of any changes to our proposal in order to receive your valued input,” said spokesman Dom Claros in an email statement Tuesday that announced plans for another open house meeting, this time in Maryhill.

Among the issues for the company to address is a newly released study that identifies Maryhill as a good candidate for a cultural heritage landscape designation. The review

carried out by the Heritage Resources Centre at the University of Waterloo looked at significant locations in Woolwich and Wellesley townships.

A communication tower would certainly alter the landscape around Maryhill, argued Bonnie Bryant, a village resident who served on the steering committee for the study.

Residents have been rallying in opposition to the tower project, with a petition in the works, she said in noting they’re all concerned about the dramatic impact it would have on the rural landscape.

“The whole village is going to see it – it’s huge.

People are not happy,” she said in an interview, adding the company seemed to be trying to keep the issue under the radar, slipping by without much notice.

With another public meeting, she expects a strong turnout.

“There would be questions that they’d have to answer. They have to prove a need for this tower,” said Bryant, who sent her writ-
