The rise of the machine at EDSS High school team claims top spot at Waterloo First Robotics Competition, held last weekend at UW

The EDSS team emerged victorious over the weekend at this year’s Waterloo First Robotics Competition, heading off to North Bay next.

With the win, the relatively young Elmira team has the distinction of un-

seating Team 2056 from Stoney Creek, which has won eight of the previous 10 games in Waterloo.

“A lot of students – well students and coaches – are sort of still in shock,” said Barbara Gaudet, a team coach and science teacher at EDSS. “Because we did not expect to be able to beat Team 2056.”

The team’s creation, Green Bull, had to perform

a series of complicated tasks at the University of Waterloo competition, that saw it moving and arranging boxes, activating switches and a final climb that had it lift its 120-pound body 12-inches off the ground. The competition also included an “autonomous period,” where the robot had to rely completely on its own internal programming,

bringing the programmers’ talents at EDSS to the forefront.

The Elmira team has one more competition in North Bay coming up, but heading into that, the team’s score was already well above the cut-off used last year to qualify in the provincials, placing them in an excellent spot.

All of this couldn’t have

been possible without the help of a large number of coaches, mentors and volunteers, as well as the sponsors who fund the team, says Gaudet. And then, of course, the students themselves.

“With the students [it’s] their dedication. The hours and hours they spend building, programming, designing, practicing, fundraising, doing the busi-

ness plan – there are all sorts of facets to it.”

The Ontario First Robotics tournament is taking place at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga from April 12-14. If EDSS does well there, the next step will be to move on to the worldlevel First Championship in Detroit.

The sun keeps on shining for those on public payroll STEVE KANNON WOOLWICH AND WELLESLEY TOWNSHIPS contributed seven members to a list of people on the public dime who earned more than $100,000 in 2017.

Across the province, the list – which includes doctors, nurses, teachers, police and firefighters in addition to civil servants – includes 131,741 names, up 6.8 per cent from 123,410 in 2016. Combined, they were paid salaries and benefits that total more than $16.8 billion.

The provincially mandated salary information, known as the Sunshine List, was released last week.

In Woolwich, chief administrative officer David Brenneman was the highest paid of township employees, taking in $150,028.96. Director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley, was paid $116,106.76, while director of finance/treasurer Richard Petherick received $116,106.76. Director of recreation and facilities Ann McArther got $101,966.25, clerk Val Hummel was paid $109,168.70 and acting manager of engineering Jared Puppe received $101,813.50.

In Wellesley, chief administrative officer Rik Louwagie was paid $121,307.89 as the township’s lone member of the club.

The Region of Waterloo has 311 employees on the list, while the police contributed 641 names.

Across the region, 5,022 people made the list, many of them at the University of Waterloo (1,450), Wilfrid Laurier University (603) and Conestoga College (104).

When first introduced in 1996, the list contained 4,319 names. Inflation is responsible for much of the increase: adjusted for inflation, $100,000 then is now the equivalent of $151,929 today.

But even using the inflation adjusted amount, there are 19,922 government employees on the Sunshine List. That’s a 335 per cent increase, while the population during the same time period has grown by about 31 per cent.

Average weekly wages for workers in Ontario are $974, which amounts to $50,600 per year. That includes overtime pay, and assumes no weeks off, amounting to just half of the Sunshine List threshold.

St. Jacobs student gets an up-close look at Queen’s Park antics A student at Foundation Christian School in Winterbourne, Luke Dixon getting all kinds of experience as a page in the Ontario legislature FAISAL ALI WITH THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE as febrile as ever and an election just around the corner, there is perhaps no more exciting time to be at Queen’s Park.

That’s certainly bound to be the case for Luke Dixon, a St. Jacobs resident and Grade 7 student at the Foundation Christian School in Winterbourne, who was selected to represent the Kitchener-

Conestoga riding in the province’s prestigious Legislative Page Program.

For two weeks, the young student will serve as a page at Queen’s Park, where he will get to meet and work with the most senior politicians in the province and watch the democratic process in action. And it’s that firsthand experience, says Dixon, that drew him to the role.

“It looked a lot more interesting to be on the

chamber floor doing things then just sitting there or watching TV,” he notes.

“It’s a great opportunity for everyone because you get to learn about things and you meet a whole bunch of new people, and it’s a great experience.”

Each year, the Legislative Page Program selects approximately 140 bright students in Grades 7 and 8 from across the province to serve in the humble, but vital, role of a legislative

page. It’s a demanding job, as Dixon explains it, placing them right in the thick of action while simultaneously asking them to remain in background and as unobtrusive as possible.

“We’re trying not to make ourselves noticed but to do what’s needed,” says Dixon.

“The Township of Wellesley already has 16 operating kennels. We seem to be a little overserved with dog kennels.

I am a little curious as to where the customers are coming from – there is a lot of product being offered

here,” said van der Maas.

“This past year we have also had several applications for new kennels; is there a wave of dog ownership coming up?”

The municipality is currently home to 16 licensed kennels, with approvals already in place for four

more. The two applications discussed last week are new for 2018.

By comparison, there are currently 11 licensed kennels in neighbouring Woolwich, with the township receiving one or two applications in an average year.

To put that in perspective,

there is roughly one kennel for every 2,000 people in Woolwich, while in Wellesley, around one kennel for every 500 people.

explained that kennel owners have told him there is a demand for some breeds going unmet. Some people, looking to meet that demand, see dog breeding as a comfortable business opportunity, which explains the rise in occupant kennel applications, he noted.

The first applicant, who has prior experience, said he is looking at breeding cocker spaniels and golden retrievers, anticipating he’ll start with 15 to 20 dogs. The second applicant is looking to raise poodles

and golden retrievers, starting with six to 10 dogs.

Directing questions to the first applicant, Amsey K. Martin of 3305 Hessen Strasse, Wagner asked about his succession plan for retired adult dogs, along with the intended market for puppies.

Martin said he would work with dealers in Hamilton, Toronto and various places that would either adopt the older dogs or sell puppies in pet stores.

Wagner noted that the second applicants, Mervin Bowman and Joseph Bowman of 7500 Line 86, had

no prior experience with breeding dogs, nor a succession plan.

“For me that’s a really big thing, because it’s one thing for you to set up a nice kennel – it’s one thing for you to meet all of our bylaws – but you are going to be breeding dogs, dogs that people adopt and put into their homes.

Many people treat them just like a family member,” said Wagner. “The adult dogs, when you’re

As well, there must be a site map that shows the location of the kennel on the property and related details of both inside and outside spaces.

is a requirement within the township’s animal control bylaw is a detailed succession plan for retired older dogs once they are no longer of use to kennel owners.

With that information in hand, the township circulates a letter to nearby property owners, soliciting feedback on the kennel proposal. Following that, staff drafts a recommendation report for council’s decision.

WELLESLEY AND WOOLWICH FIREFIGHTERS went above and beyond the call of duty Wednesday evening at local grocery stores to raise donations for the region’s Community Food Assistance Network.

Across the region, the spring food and fund drive saw firefighters and police officers at grocery stores in Kitchener, Waterloo, Wellesley, St. Clements, Elmira and Cambridge.

They partnered with the Food Bank of Waterloo Region for the Fire and Police to Food Bank 365 initiative that will help replenish local food banks.

“It’s just a great opportunely to raise awareness about the needs of all of the programs within the Waterloo Region,” said Wendi Campbell, executive director of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region. “This spring we are trying to fill some shelves with the

most needed food items and have a great community conversation about the needs in all parts of our community, whether it is in the townships, in the cities, in our rural communities. The need for food assistance is throughout all of Waterloo Region and to have our Fire to Food Bank and our Police to Food Bank programs helping us with the kickoff is just a great way to raise awareness and get some extra hands out tonight to help us do some collection.”

An initiative started by City of Waterloo fire chief Richard Hepditch, Fire and Police to Food Bank 365 helps to raise awareness of the year-round struggle faced by residents of the community. The stations also provide a place for people to drop off food any time.

“People often think of food banks and food programs during holidays, but it is all year round,

and the Fire to Food Bank Program has helped raise that awareness because people can drop off donations at fire halls and police stations 365 days of the year,” said Campbell.

“The Fire to Food Bank and the Police to Food Bank 365 programs are only a few years old, they have always been amazing partners, but through the leadership of chief Richard Hepditch from Waterloo Fire Rescue we have really been working with them to raise awareness of the year round struggle that is faced by residents of our communities.”

Locally, firefighters were at Pym’s Village Market in Wellesley, Food Town in St. Clements, and Food Basics, Foodland and Shoppers Drug Mart in Elmira taking donations. They’ll be making use of bins made by Elmira District Secondary School students Abby Hanley and Chantal McMurray, using donated

supplies from JL’s Duke St. Home Building Centre.

Food and monetary donations will be delivered to Wilmot Family Resource Centre, Cambridge SelfHelp Food Bank, Woolwich Community Services and The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

The united goal is to raise enough for 20,000 meals in two hours for those in need of food support in the Waterloo Region, a feat Campbell is confident with the support and generosity of the community they will be able to reach.

“It’s a pretty big effort.

We have covered off so many grocery stores and are going to have volunteers helping us, so I think we can do it,” said Campbell ahead of the event.

bers, getting water for anyone on demand, preparing the chambers for the day and delivering books and references requested by the clerk. As such, pages have to be extremely observant and mindful of details, and quick to move at a moment’s notice when they’re needed.

The result, in theory anyway, is a smoothly running and efficient legislature; like the grease in the wheels, the pages are what help keep the enormous machinery of government in motion.

For anyone who has ever been audience to a meeting of an assembly of any kind, the event can seem fastidious if not downright tedious. But on the floor, Dixon says that it can be a very fast-paced and excit-

ing environment.

“It’s a lot of fun but it’s also a lot of work, especially memory work because you have to know all the MPPs by faces and seats,” says Dixon. “So it’s hard at the start, but it gets easier.

And actually being in the chamber is a lot of fun versus just sitting in the galleries.”

It’s also a great way to learn the ins-and-outs of Ontario’s political process.

“So right now they’re doing the routine things like the introduction of bills and petitions or reports by committees or member statements,” said Dixon. “So it’s fun. The two best parts for pages are probably question period and routine proceedings because you have the most to do.”

The day begins at 8:15 a.m. for the young pages,

as they are briefed early on the day’s events and what will be required of them.

They are also tasked with getting the chambers ready ahead of the MPPs for the start of legislature.

“Once order is called and the Speaker comes in, he reads the prayer and then he calls the orders of the day. And at that point half the pages go down to legislative process class, and half of them stay in the chamber to help wherever needed, and then everyone’s back up for question period because it’s quite busy,” explains Dixon.

From there, the legislature adjourns for lunch, after which are the routine proceedings occur. “And that’s the bills, motions, reports by committees, petitions, member statements and statements by the ministry and responses. Not

in that order, but those six things.”

Dixon will soon be returning to his home in St. Jacobs as the legislative session ends, but he’ll be returning with a wealth of new experience and insight. The youth is certainly keen to encourage others to apply for the program, though with one caveat.

“I would recommend it to everyone who is good with memorizing things, because you need to know all the MPPs and their faces and their ridings and their names, their portfolios if they have one, and where they sit,” he said.

“It’s a really good experience and I would recommend it to people. But if they find they have trouble with remembering things for school, it might not be the best for them because you have to know a lot.”

Wellesley Twp. discloses council pay, expenses Wellesley councillors collected $63,820.92 in pay, plus $6,978.27 in benefits, filing expense claims of $9,497.86 in 2017.

Treasurer Theresa Bisch filed a statement of remuneration and expenses that was accepted by council last week. The Ontario Municipal Act gives municipalities until March 31 to make the details public.

Each ward councillor received $11,301.60 in salary, with varying expenses – $1,501.03 to $2,504.71 – based on mileage, cell phones and conference fees.

Mayor Joe Nowak was paid a salary of $18,614.52 by the township, plus $12,000 from Waterloo North Hydro and $2,132.90 from the Grand River Conservation Authority. He filed expenses of $1,210.07.

Bisch’s report also noted the township paid four members of its Committee of Adjustment remuneration totalling $805.68 and eight recreation committee meeting compensations totalling $800.

New condenser for arena

Homelessness grant for region

Erosion having done in the existing system, the condenser unit at the St. Jacobs Arena will replaced ahead of the next ice season.

Woolwich council last week awarded the job to SCS Refrigeration at a cost of $83,000.

An inspection last year revealed advanced pitting of the ammonia tubes, with replacement recommended to avoid the potential release of the refrigerant. The work is to be complete before August 17.

The Region of Waterloo will get $3.27 million over three years from the province to help end chronic homelessness by 2025.

The money will be used to triage people experiencing chronic homelessness so that they get help faster. Such people tend to be the most vulnerable, often suffering with disabling conditions such as chronic illness or substance use problems such that they need support to stay housed, say regional officials.

“Right now, access to support and rent assistance for this population is first come, first served,” said Deb Schlichter, housing services director for the region. “This funding will ensure we reach those with the greatest need. We want to help them move into housing as quickly as possible with the support they need to keep their home.”

The new approach will see people who have not had housing for at least six months in the past year more easily get through the steps needed to access housing and support. Two new teams of workers will be formed, the first team helping people find the right

housing and support for themselves, and the second trained to offer service for youth, single adults, families, and First Nations/Metis/Inuit peoples to help them recover from homelessness and connect to services they need to stay housed.

Tenants in the private market who are helped by these teams will access new subsidies to help them afford their rent.

With this new approach there will be one central waiting list for housing support – currently there are several – managed by Lutherwood, recently selected as the lead through a public procurement process.

Police loading up for gun amnesty program running through April THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE and municipal police services are holding a gun amnesty program during the month of April.

The gun amnesty is for any Ontario resident who wishes to voluntarily surrender unwanted or illegally-owned firearms, weapons, accessories or ammunition, providing citizens with a safe way to surrender weapons and enhance public safety, police say.

During the amnesty, police will not recommend weapons-related Criminal Code charges that might otherwise apply to people who are turning in these items. Police note no amnesty is offered for people who turn in weapons that have been used in the commission of a crime. No anonymous submissions will be accepted.

Interested gun own-

ers are strongly urged to call the OPP (or their local police service’s) nonemergency number at 1-888-310-1122 to arrange for officers to attend and safely retrieve the weapons. Gun owners can also use the OPP website button – www.opp.ca/gunamnesty – or the Citizen Self Reporting tool to notify police.

Police warn that guns should never be delivered directly to police facilities.

“Ontario has seen an increase in break-and-enter incidents where firearms are stolen or targeted by criminals. The OPP and our participating police partners are giving people a safe way to dispose of weapons, imitation weapons and related equipment, accessories and ammunition to reduce the number of guns in their communities,” said OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes in a release.

He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Court on April 20 to answer to the charges.

6:45 PM | Waterloo Regional Police responded to a collision on Ebycrest Road, between Victoria Street North and Bridge Street, near Breslau. A Honda Civic, being driven by a Cambridge woman, was travelling westbound when it collided with a westbound pickup truck. The pickup truck left the scene after the collision. The driver of the Civic and her male passenger received minor injuries.

6:30 AM | Wellington County OPP responded to a report of a collision between a car and a bicycle that occurred on Wellington Road 7 between Wellington Road 51 and Eighth Line. Police, Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue, and Guelph-Wellington Paramedics Service responded. The cyclist, an adult male, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle that struck the cyclist remained at the location. The OPP is asking that anyone who may have been driving on County 7 southbound early that morning and saw the cyclist to call them at 1-888-310-1122.

5:02 AM | An unknown suspect attempted to steal diesel fuel from a farm on Maple Bend Road in Woolwich Township. The suspect vehicle is described as larger than a pickup truck with numerous lights on the rear area, with what appeared to be a fuel tank on it. The vehicle fled quickly towards Sawmill Road as the homeowner was on the phone with police. Waterloo Regional Police are seeking information regarding this attempted theft, asking anyone who has had a similar incident to report it. Police also remind anyone with fuel tanks on their property to secure and lock the access to the fuel.

THE VIEW FROM HERE

We’re only just seeing the perils of social media BELATEDLY, WE’VE BECOME SLIGHTLY more aware that technology companies such as Facebook and Google have a vested interest in harvesting our personal data, eliminating our privacy and undermining the common good.

That’s not a side effect, that’s their business model.

In the Internet age, there’s money to be made – lots of it – in selling users (i.e. you) to advertisers. But that’s just where it starts. As the Cambridge Analytica scandal shows, the more pernicious use of the technology involves intensive psychological analysis to sway public opinion, from the products we buy to the votes we cast.

For all intents and purposes, it’s the use of psychological warfare techniques – psy ops – to support the corporate state. And that’s even without the (often illegal) data mining by government intelligence services.

Hailed as democratizing the flow of information – twoway and decentralized, just the opposite of what we’ve seen historically – the Internet has massively reshaped the way we live and do business, for instance. It’s also become a bonanza for the disseminators of propaganda and collectors of data intent on stripping away our privacy for their own gain, financial and/or political.

We’re complicit in that, flocking to sites like Facebook, where we’re laying ourselves bare to the world.

Facebook, like many Internet sites, exist to harvest information, sell it to advertisers and target you with personalized ads. Tracking is the norm, as is collecting as many details as possible of what each of us does online.

The ubiquitous Google is an even larger collector of data and invader of privacy. Worst still, it’s increasingly a censor, filtering search information for its own gain – directing web surfers to its own or affiliated sites, for instance – and for political reasons.

Sites on both the right and, particularly, the left now argue they’re being blocked or pushed back pages in searches that are performed.

The screened right-leaning sites have tended to be more on the fringe, generating content deemed hate-related. On the left, even progressive sites long accustomed to high Google rankings have been feeling the pinch.

Such censorship tactics are the work of an establishment – of which the large tech companies are certainly part – that knows it has lost all credibility with the thinking public.

Attempts at manufacturing consent are nothing new, first by co-opting the traditional media that has become strictly corporatist and now via new technologies, with even greater control and appalling outcomes. The traditional view of the media speaking truth to power, holding leaders accountable, has certainly been undermined by a variety of factors, including the concentration of corporate ownership. That’s being repeated in the electronic age.

The Internet provided something of a workaround for groups of all ideologies that felt left out of mainstream news coverage. Now, with increased filtering – aka censorship – an agenda is yet again being pressed.

Clearly, there are all kinds of unsavoury information to be found online, some of it outright criminal. There are lies and libels left, right and center. Where the search engine changes are said to target the worst of such hateful and “fake news” sources, the wider net that catches up many sites critical of established orthodoxy is not inadvertent.

Profits and political control are the end game, not byproducts of the technology.

Flinging eggs everywhere and anywhere in hopes that something will stick.

They’re just shams, but elections a must for dictators WORLD AFFAIRS WHY DO THEY BOTHER? Last week, Vladimir Putin, the Russian dictator, got himself ‘re-elected’ to his fourth six-year term by a 76 per cent majority on a 76 per cent turnout. This week, the Egyptian dictator, former general Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, will be ‘reelected’ with close to 100 per cent support, although probably on a very low turnout. A quarter-billion people are being inconvenienced in order to wield what amounts to giant rubber stamps.

So why do they bother?

Both dictators control the mass media in their countries, so they can be reasonably confident that most people will not be exposed to much criticism of their actions. They both can and do have people who oppose them arrested or killed (and Sisi’s enforcers also torture people). Yet they feel the need to go through these fake democratic elections in order to validate their rule.

The charade goes even further in many African countries. At some point in the past, often after popular protests or even a revolution, term limits were imposed on the presidency, but later the man in power (it’s always a man) realizes that he actually wants to rule the country for life.

Once again, however, abolishing the term limits is done with due ‘democratic’ decorum, generally involving a state-managed referendum.

China is the latest dictatorship to end term limits, making Xi Jinping in effect president-for-life, although it skipped the referendum part. Indeed, even China pretends to be a democracy, more or less, although the Communist Party must always be in the ‘leading role’ and there are no direct national elections. Why do they go through all this rigmarole, when the outcome is invariably a foregone conclusion?

Egypt’s pharaohs felt no need to ask the people’s opinions on their performance as rulers. The kings of 18th-century Europe ruled by ‘divine right,’ not by the popular will (and

they didn’t actually ask God’s opinion on their performance either). But at some point in the past century, democracy has won the argument worldwide.

It has not won all the power struggles, and many dictators survive in practice, but they are all obliged to pretend to have popular support. This is a very big change from the past, when tyrannical power was generally based on a combination of religious authority and brutal armed force. Why, and in particular why now?

The anthropologists may have an answer. It is now pretty widely agreed in their profession that pre-civilized human beings almost all lived in bands where all adult men, at least, were treated as equals, and all had an equal right to share in decision-making. They even had well-established methods for making sure that nobody got too big for his boots.

These primitive ‘democracies’ all collapsed in the early stages of civilization, when the huge rise in population (from dozens to millions in a thousand

years) made it physically impossible for everybody to take part in the discussion about means and ends any more.

At the same time all the traditional social controls that kept ambitious people from seizing power failed too. You can’t shame people into respecting the opinions and personal freedoms of other people if the numbers get so big that you don’t even know them personally. Result: 5,000 years of tyranny.

But give these mass societies mass media, and they regain the ability to communicate with one another.

It turns out, unsurprisingly, that they want to be treated as equals again. The first successful democratic revolution happened in the American colonies in 1776 because printing presses were everywhere, and over half the population was literate.

Now mass media are everywhere, and even the dictators have to pretend that they are in power by the will of the people. It will be a long time before they actually disappear DYER | 8

The additional space and types of retail aren’t in keeping with the township’s vision for the area.

In a nutshell, the proposal doesn’t jibe with the goal of protecting downtown Elmira.

The question is, why?

No, not why it doesn’t jibe, but why is the township fixated on the core?

It’s a familiar issue in the township, having been front and center during the Walmart debate over the King/86 development near St. Jacobs and again a number of times during the expansion and wouldbe expansion of grocery stores in Elmira.

Woolwich is not alone in that regard. It’s a dilemma in communities all over the country, where downtowns have taken a beating.

The Skyline Retail Real Estate Holdings at the Foodland plaza will not be the knockout punch for downtown Elmira.

That said, it will have an impact on the core, just as the growth of shopping malls and, later, big box developments undoubtedly had an impact on cities everywhere – you need look no further than our neighbours, Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo.

The reality, however, is that we want something different in our shopping habits. Malls, with dozens or hundreds of stores under one roof and plenty of parking, offer decided advantages, not the least of which is shelter from the weather. And, in recent years, the superstore phenomenon has caught fire.

You can bet that plenty of people from Elmira, not to mention the rest of Woolwich and Wellesley townships, do their shopping at those facilities in the aforementioned cities.

Space considerations alone preclude those kinds of shopping experiences from being offered in downtown cores – in El-

Arthur Street and through, say, an industrial area on the east side of town would do wonders.

Such changes are obvious to Laurie Ward-Surey, who, as owner of E’s Into Wellness studio, lives and works downtown.

From little things such as more greenery and improved garbage collection right through to a bypass route, there are a host of ways to make the downtown more welcoming, she says.

At her Arthur Street location for more than a decade, she saw a few changes downtown, most of them not for the better.

“The traffic is getting worse. Trucks and tandem trucks ... they’re just speeding through the downtown,” says WardSurey, in favour of a bypass route.

In the meantime, she’d like to see new ventures in the core reflecting the influx of residents moving into the town’s new subdivisions.

“It would be nice if we could tap into that. We don’t need more offices downtown,” she says, not-

ing stores open and then close in short order, the space often turned into offices.

“It does become frustrating.”

She’s not alone in that sentiment, as the transition is not lost on Woolwich planners.

A number of studies have mapped out some ideal changes, but the township isn’t in the business of acquiring real estate or helping to launch new ventures, unlike some larger municipalities (often with mixed or poor results).

Ideally, there would be the development of a cohesive vision for the core, a strategy to provide what the public wants in order to attract people downtown. That could include longer hours and marketing expertise to make stores more in line with the expectations of today’s customers. In the bigger picture, that would mean attracting the kinds of businesses that bring people in and entice them to linger, such as outdoor cafés to play up the downtown’s advantages in the

better weather.

The township and its BIA have recognized an opportunity presented by a growing Elmira. Many of the new homes – current and future – are within walking distance of the core; the goal now is to give them a reason to walk, and stop, downtown.

Over the years, Woolwich has completed a few core reviews for Elmira, and has undertaken zoning changes to tweak the development options downtown. Much of the emphasis, not surprisingly, has been on the retail portion of downtown business. Such thinking dominates municipal planning schemes just about everywhere. Under pressure today from big-box retail, much as they were from the malls in previous generations, downtowns are having to cope with change. That doesn’t always sit well with core retailers.

mira’s case, it’s easy to look around and see that the retail outlets north of Conestoga Mall, for instance, would find no home there.

Yet most of us are voting with our dollars to shop at those other spots.

By bringing some of that flavour to Elmira’s south end – let’s be clear, we’re in no imminent danger of recreating Hespeler Road – there is an opportunity to keep some of that trade in this community. Township planners aren’t convinced.

It’s easy to see why they’re concerned. Elmira hasn’t suffered the mass vacancies and resultant decay seen in other communities – you don’t have to go far to see examples – but it isn’t the robust, going concern officials would like to see. Too much storefront office space, not enough retail or services that draw people in.

The downtown could also use some sprucing up, the impetus for a bid by the Business Improvement Area (BIA) to boost its budget by increasing rates.

Fewer than half of Americans trust Facebook to obey U.S. privacy laws, while a survey published by Bild am Sonntag, Germany’s largest-selling Sunday paper, found 60% of Germans fear that Facebook and other social networks are having a negative impact on democracy. Nearly three-quarters of Canadian Facebook users say they will make at least some change to how they use the social media platform in the wake of a data mining scandal.

“The issue is a callous disregard for the privacy rights of users and a lack of care with respect to data that had been entrusted to Facebook. I’m not sure exactly what’s going on here, but I’m afraid there is a systemic problem with the algorithms and the business model of Facebook that allow bad actors to cause harm to innocent users of Facebook.”

In approving an expansion at the Safety-Kleen plant, Woolwich council was not prepared to write the Breslau company a blank cheque. The township plans to keep a close eye on the process when the project moves to the construction phase. The move clears the way for the company to acquire 15 acres of land from the abutting Forwell gravel pit, some of which has contaminants underneath, a legacy from Breslube Enterprises and other former operations on the site.

(if they ever do), but they already rule less than half of the world’s people, and they all have to go through a charade of democracy to legitimize their rule.

When the first results of the Russian election were coming in last week, a reporter asked Vladimir Putin if he would run again in six years’ time. “What you are saying is a bit funny,” Putin replied. “Do you think that I will stay here until I’m 100 years old?

No.” But that’s what Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s former ruler, would also have said when he had been in power for only 18 years.

In the end Mugabe stayed in power for 37 years, and he was 93 and planning to run for another term when he was finally overthrown last year. Putin would be a mere 85 years old when he broke Mugabe’s record, although China’s Xi Jinping would have to live until he was 97 to do the same. I’ll bet neither one makes it.

things, and even promote them, it’s in no position to make the changes demanded by the public.

That being the case, even attempts to block development elsewhere are going to do nothing to funnel businesses into the core.

Steps need to enhance experience at covered bridge To the Editor, I READ THE “WEST Montrose residents’ association calls for improvements to the covered bridge experience” story with interest in last week’s Observer. I live in Elmira, visiting the covered bridge several times a summer, often as a canoeist. The covered bridge is usually where I disembark; I’m one of the trespassers, although I am respectful by not loitering and not leaving any belongings or garbage behind.

Although the covered bridge is nice and a unique landmark, the entire area is not very inviting, especially with all the “Private Property,” “No Trespassing,” and “No Parking” signs.

I find it shameful that the public does not have

access to the river. Even if the property is private, it would be very kind if the landowners would share their wealth by letting others enjoy the landscape and the natural resource.

I support Coun. Patrick Merlihan’s idea of the township purchasing the area along the river to make it public. Perhaps some of the money the Ministry of Tourism is providing for increased access to the Grand River could be used in this area as well (see the Waterloo Region Record article “Project aims to ensure Grand River canoe access improves from tourists” from March 23).

Additional parking and parkland, with a playground, would make the area much more inviting.

I would also like to see much of the river’s edge naturalized to provide environmental benefits to the wildlife as well as the river itself.

Taylor Stewart won three of his four snowcross races last weekend at Chicopee. The success has helped put him at or near the top of the standings of the series in which he competes as the season winds down at next weekend’s CSRA National Championships.

[SUBMITTED] ALI WILSON A NATURAL TALENT FOR the sport and the guts to go with it has helped propel a local snowcross racer into the thick of a national championship run, despite being fairly new to the circuit.

Nineteen-year-old Taylor Stewart, an EDSS grad who calls Heidelberg home, is currently sitting in firstand second-place in his rookie year of Sport 600 1

and Sport 600 2, respectively, on the Canadian Snowcross Racing Association’s competitive circuit, racing against riders with years of experience on the sled.

CSRA competitions in Canada are held primarily within Ontario and Quebec, with the race season running October through April. Today’s most popular form of snowmobile racing, snowcross has high-flying aerial displays

and compact track designs that sees competitors race around tracks with tight turns, banked corners and a variety of jumps.

Last weekend Stewart competed in the Rockstar Energy National Snowcross races at Chicopee Ski Resort in Kitchener in front of a big home crowd of friends and family. He’s had a very successful season that has seen him on the podium on many occasions. Ahead of this past weekend, he was

sitting in second and third respectively.

Over the two-day event he won the Sport 600 1 and Sport 600 2 races on Saturday. On Sunday, he came first overall again in Sport 600 2. And despite crashing on the course, he was still able to come third overall in Sport 600 1.

Stewart has been riding snowmobiles since he was young, however it wasn’t until he was introduced to racing that he caught the

snowcross bug.

“I went to my first snowmobile race at Chicopee, actually, just to watch with my dad,” said Stewart.

“Ever since I went to watch that, I was bugging my dad to go try it, and I did.”

Going from that initial zeal to standing on a podium at Chicopee was a somewhat surreal experience, he notes.

“It was really cool for SNOWCROSS | 10

YESTERDAY, I HAD A great chat with a biologist who specializes in deer behaviour. He told me several interesting facts about deer.

But aside from “No, I won’t tell you the exact location of a 12-point-buck this fall,” the most disappointing thing he said was that there are studies that support the theory that deer recognize areas where there is little to no hunting pressure. And, worse still, they commonly utilize those areas when the hunting season is on.

This was only disappointing because he was telling me something every deer hunter already knows.

I don’t know a single deer hunter who has not experienced days in the field where they have not seen so much as a fleeting glimpse of a whitetail in the distance, only to drive out after the hunt and see deer lounging on someone’s front lawn or dozing off on a property that is posted with no hunting sign.

The latter, to me, is ample proof that deer can read and have a pretty good GALEA | 11

Woolwich Wild invite girls to try their hand at hockey ALI WILSON GIRLS’ HOCKEY IS ONE of the sport’s growing segments, but there are always those who’ve never played and would like to do so. Providing them with that chance is precisely the reason for the Woolwich Wild’s annual Come and Try Girls’ Hockey event.

It’s an opportunity for

girls between the ages of 4 and 12 (by Dec. 31, 2018) to come out and get a feel for the sport.

“It’s giving them that chance to actually try it and you know kind of confirm that that is what they want to do,” said Jacinta Faries, one of the organizers. “Sometimes you’ve heard of something, but until you try it you don’t really know if you are go-

ing to enjoy it or not. I find that just watching the girls as they come out most of them are really happy that they have come and they have enjoyed it.”

During the session, the girls will do some skating and hockey drills to start and will finish up with a scrimmage game for fun.

And there to answer any questions parents may have will be Woolwich

Wild representatives.

“We divide them up into different groups based on their skill level and then have stations where they do different drills to work on their skating or with their stick on the puck.

Near the end of the ice time, we do little scrimmages so they get the sense of what a hockey game might be like,” she explained, noting they

get a wide range of skating ability, and make sure to divide them up so that everyone has fun. “Most of them want to try what it is really like to play a game, so the scrimmage is fun for that.”

First held in 2011, the Come and Try Girls Hockey event has been held every year since, with 28 girls attending last year.

In addition to being a

scheduler, local league liaison and on the Wild executive since 2009, Faries was able to see firsthand the benefits of playing with the Wild through her daughter’s time in the sport. After growing up with her three older brothers playing, Faries daughter wanted to try it herself and ended up playGIRLS’ HOCKEY | 10

Woolwich Wildcat teams take multiple championships over the weekend FAISAL ALI THERE WAS PLENTY TO celebrate by the end of the weekend as team after team of Woolwich Wildcats finished atop their various leagues.

In the OMHA series, the Novice A, Major Bantam A, Jr. Sugar Kings and Midget AE teams were all declared champions of the season.

Over in the Tri-Country games, three teams, the Tyke MD, Major PeeWee A and Minor Midget A, took their game to another level with three straight championships. And then, in the Grand River category, the Novice LL#1 and PeeWee LL#2 were declared the winners.

Amidst all the winning,

both the Jr. Sugar Kings and the Major Bantam teams qualified to play in the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) championships in April. Left competing in the Grand River Championship are the Midget LL#2 team, who have a few more games to go.

Speaking to the young members of the Major Novice A team right after their victorious game against the Orillia Terriers on Friday, the kids are so ecstatic, they’re positively talking a mile-a-minute.

“It feels amazing!” said Cruz Balog of winning the championship, amidst the flurry of noise and excitement in the room.

“Well, we’ve worked hard and we’re proud of

what we’ve done, and I just hope that we can do it again,” added Colton Brito.

For Rob Hall, head coach of the victorious Novice A team, the talents and determination of the players are front in centre. With a record of 66-3, and a flawless regular season, Hall couldn’t be prouder of his players.

“The team is exceptional,” he said. “They are wonderful, wonderful children. They are beautiful hockey players. They all really have a great skill-set with regards to the game.

They’re passionate about the game, that’s the thing.”

Many people will ask him how it is the team wins so often. The answer is quite simple, Hall sug-

gests: “Yes there’s coaching involved, of course. However, when the kids are at this age, at 8-years-old, it’s sheer passion and drive.

These kids just are driven to win.”

With the season wrapping up for some teams, while other move on, it’s certainly ending on a high note. Hall is hoping to do one last team skate before they disband for the year.

And while some players will likely move on to other teams and other leagues next year, Hall is confident they will do well no matter where they end up.

“I can only wish the best to each one of the players and the families as they go forward,” he said.

Having started racing a few years ago, Stewart quickly gained attention last year from the Ski-Doo racing department, who offered him a position on the Ski-Doo X team, the next level up being professional riding.

“He has done exceptionally,” said Taylor’s mom, Susan. “A lot of the kids that he competes against, they have been racing for years and years and years.

He has been driving since he was probably 6 or 7 years old, but he has only been racing for a short period of time – so there are guts and a gift there.”

Last year Taylor competed in Trail Sport 600, before making the jump up to Sport 600 1 and 2 this season.

“It’s definitely more competitive and there are definitely a lot more experienced riders in this category,” he said. “Most of the people that I have been racing against have been doing it from a young age and have been competing in the series for a bunch of years.”

in Sport 600 1 and is sitting in second place with 680 points in Sport 600 2 in the CSRA national standings.

His success has not come as a surprise to his mom.

“As a kid, he was four when he had his training wheels off and was going off of the curbs the same day. I don’t know when that starts or whether you’re born that way – that’s something I think is in you,” she said of his daredevil nature.

By the same token, she’s aware that the extreme sport also comes with its risks that other competitions don’t.

“I mean it’s amazing, I am super proud, but at the same time it’s a nail-biter.

I definitely hold my breath and pray, but you have to be in a certain head space to do this and I am there to support him,” she said. “If he’s got it in him to do it, and you provide all of the tools and the safety gear, then I think you’re set to go. But you have to have the guts and then there is the gift, the gift of being able to ride.”

While this week comes with a bit of a breather, Taylor and his team will be heading to the Mystik Lubricants National Championships at the Horseshoe Valley Resort this weekend where he will be racing to see if he can edge out the competition and take that top spot.

“This weekend is our last race of the year,” he said.

“So everyone usually tries to put everything they have into it, especially in my category because the points right now are really close.”

Regardless of the outcome, his success is exceptional given that he’s been in the sport for but a few years. While right now he is working towards that top spot for this year’s season, he does hope that with

ing in Woolwich from novice all the way through to midget. The choice to go with girls’ hockey from the start didn’t come without a debate, however.

“We kind of debated well which should we put her in, but from a dressing room and friend perspective it’s so nice because all of the girls are together and you know they chat they get to know each other really well. I think they have just as much fun in the dressing room as they do on the ice,” she said. “They grow up being

friends – I’ve watched my daughter, the friends she made in novice she is still friends with today.”

Her daughter’s experience and enthusiasm is shared by current novice players, who have their reasons to play.

“Just having fun,” said Leah Thompson, who is finishing up her second year on the team.

McKenzie Rank, also a second-year Wild player, said she likes “that I get to skate with my friends.”

And as veteran Wild Addison Gunn explained, “I like to play and help win

hockey.”

Participants are asked to bring a CSA-approved helmet and face mask, skates, stick and gloves – or really good winter gloves to protect fingers.

However, if you do not have any of those items on hand Faries says not to fret: if you reach out to her she can help find equipment.

Come and Try Girls Hockey will be happening on April 15 at 4 p.m. at the Woolwich Memorial Centre in Elmira, with the girls heading onto the ice at 4:30 p.m.

sense of humour.

The difference between a good deer hunter and a bad one is that the good deer hunters learn from situations like this. Mostly, they learn how to shake their fists at deer. Sure, this has little effect on the outcome, but it does make you feel better.

Anyhow, since this biologist confirmed something I already suspected, I have started to wonder if other

things I have thought about fish and game are true.

That’s why I have began compiling a list of questions that I will ask him to confirm or deny next time we talk.

The first one that comes to mind is: Do big bucks deliberately lounge in front of my trail cameras at night to drive me crazy or is it merely to give me false hope?

My suspicion has always been ‘yes’ to both of those

questions, but it would be nice to hear a professional opinion.

I’d also like to know if grouse calculate pre-set flight paths based on the number of big trees they can put between the hunter and themselves?

Again, my experience suggests this is the case.

Then there are a few questions that have been nagging me ever since I bought my first duck licence more than 40 years

ago. Why do ducks always buzz your decoys from the direction you are facing 180 degrees away from? And, if he’s got the answer for that I’d also like to know why is it that when you sneak up on a pothole, one duck takes off straight out of the water, flusters you and causes you to empty your shotgun without touching a feather while the other hundred that were behind an impossibly small patch of cattails only get up and

darken the sky after they hear you fumbling to reload? Lastly, why do ducks only land in your decoys when you are answering the call of nature or pouring a coffee from your thermos?

Also, if that biologist has a colleague who knows anything about fish, I think I’d ask why trout only start rising after you have tangled your fly line in a tree? Or why trophy fish ignore expert techniques

and years of accumulated knowledge fall every time for a rookie who has just made a ridiculously sloppy cast to a place where fish shouldn’t be?

I think all of these are fair questions that require more research from fish and game biologists.

And, come to think of it, it wouldn’t hurt to enlist a few psychiatric experts to figure out why hunters and anglers put themselves through this too.

Kings eliminate Stratford in six to advance to Cherrey Cup final Win on home ice punched Elmira’s ticket to a rematch FAISAL ALI THE SUGAR KINGS NOW face the Listowel Cyclones for the Cherrey Cup after defeating the Stratford Warriors to advance to the third round of the GOJHL playoffs.

After Stratford evened the series at 2-2 last week, the Kings bounced back to take the next two matches, eliminating the Warriors in six games. The Cyclones needed seven games to get past the Waterloo Siskins on Monday night.

Elmira will be looking to stay hot, building on victories of 4-2 and 3-2 that followed the 6-3 loss March 21 that essentially made it a best-of-three series.

“I think as a team, we’ve definitely been playing a lot better these last two, three weeks specifically,” said Elmira head coach Trent Brown. “I think we’re doing what it takes to win, but we’re also executing on a lot of other details of the game.”

Going into the March 21 game at the WMC, the Kings were up 2-1 in the best-of-seven series against Stratford. It was a good place to be for the Kings, as the Warriors had dominated the

regular season in secondplace, ahead of the thirdplace Sugar Kings.

The first-period that evening belonged to the Kings, who went up 2-0 on goals by Zack Cameron (Tyler Beauparlant, Braydon Munn) and Matt MacKay (Mason McMahon, Ty Biles).

The tide started to turn in the second, however, as Stratford tied up the score before the halfway point.

The Kings were briefly back in front 3-2 a couple of minutes later when Ethan Skinner capitalized on a power-play opportunity, assisted by Marcel Berube and Ryan Takamatsu. But that would be it for Elmira’s scoring, while Stratford kept on rolling.

Before the buzzer sounded, the Warriors had notched another pair to take a 4-3 lead into the intermission.

It was a one-goal game for most of the final stanza, right up until the final minutes of the game. At 17:24 the Warriors made it 5-3, prompting the Kings to pull netminder Tyler Mazzocato in favour of an extra skater.

The conventional gambit didn’t work, however, as Stratford found the empty net to make it a 6-3 final.

Heading back to Stratford, the Kings knew game five March 23 would be a crucial win.

Skinner (Jeremey Goodwin, Takamatsu) drew first blood at 3:08. It was a good start, but the Warriors responded with a power play marker with just over two minutes to go and then went up 2-1 on a buzzer-beater that clocked in at 19:59.

The Kings were down but certainly not out, as the only scoring for the remainder of the match came from the visitors.

At 6:35 of the second, Berube knotted things up, with Skinner picking up the assist. Ethan Wiseman (Cameron) then came in with the game-winning goal at 17:45.

It was 3-2 as the players entered the final stanza and nobody was leaving anything to chance. The trenches were dug, the lines were holding, and there were few prime chances on either side. The only puck to find the back of a net was early on, at 5:20, from Wiseman (Jeff Jordan). It was a tight affair, but the Kings won out in the end by holding on for KINGS | 12

The Region, in cooperation with the Townships of North Dumfries and Wellesley is developing a comprehensive backflow prevention program to protect the municipal water supply from contamination caused by backflow. Regional By-Law 14-03 came into force in October 2014 and specifies that all water users connected to the municipal water supply system in Wellesley and North Dumfries must have a device installed near the water meter to prevent backflow.

Residential properties two stories or less (excluding basements) and not connected to another supply source or sprinklers are exempt from having to install a backflow device.

Industrial, commercial and larger residential properties will be required to have backflow prevention devices installed within the next 2-3 years. The type of device required will vary based on the risks posed by a certain property. The Region will be assessing all properties to determine risk, and owners will have 12 months to install a device after receiving notification from the Region.

Returning up 3-2 in the series, the Kings looked to finish off the Warriors in front of a home crowd on Sunday.

Skating out onto the ice, the Kings were greeted by the roar of crowd almost 1,000 strong. And perhaps it was the energy in the building or the chanting of “Go Kings, Go!” that did it, but the Kings pulled through with a win: 3-2, in overtime.

Until that point, neither team had won a home game in the series, so when Stratford potted the first goal just two minutes in, it seemed likely the Kings were heading for another defeat. The squad, however, dug in their heels and fought back, though it was not until the second frame that they had a chance to respond.

Kurtis Goodwin, from Spencer Comelli, knotted things up at 2:17. His goal was followed just over a minute

later by another from Wiseman, a power play marker with assists from Takamatsu and the elder Goodwin brother, Jeremey. The Kings were up now 2-1 as they headed into second intermission.

Less than a minute into the third, the Warriors shot right out of the gate with an unassisted power play marker by forward Sean Ross. The game was now in a dead heat at 2-2, and both teams were fighting it out for the deciding goal before the buzzer went again. But it never came.

That meant the game would be settled in overtime.

But it was no drawn-out affair, as Skinner needed just 99 seconds to end the game ... and Stratford’s playoff hopes.

“It was amazing. Everyone just hopped off (the bench),” said Kurtis Goodwin right after the game. “I didn’t even see it go in. I just saw the ref put his hand out and everyone jumped up. It was awesome. Everybody

was screaming, having fun.

The best feeling.”

About the series-winning goal, Skinner commended his teammates for getting the puck to him.

“I was just trying to get the puck to the net,” said Skinner. “I got a good pass in the slot.”

After the celebration, the Kings had to shift gears, getting ready to face the Listowel Cyclones in a Cherrey Cup final rematch, looking to ride the wave of victories thus far in the playoffs.

“I think we’re just clicking at the right time,” said Skinner. “We had a couple of low spots in the middle of the season but right now everyone is firing on all cylinders and everyone’s working for each other, so we’re going to try and keep that up over the next series.”

The Kings head to Listowel Friday for an 8 p.m. start. Game two of the series is back in Elmira on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Kindred Credit Union seeking new CEO as incumbent to retire Having brought about growth and seeing a bright future, Brent Zorgdrager says it’s time for someone else to take the helm, noting it’s a good time for socially conscious organizations FAISAL ALI PEACE, JUSTICE AND SHARED prosperity are not ideas one would typically associate with any banking organization, but for Kindred Credit Union, it’s precisely at the core of what it does. It’s those same values that drew Brent Zorgdrager to the organization, first as a customer, later as a volunteer on the board of directors and, eventually, as an employee who became CEO. And after nine years in the senior positions, Zorgdrager has decided to pass over the reins of responsibility to new hands, confident he’s leaving a thriving and honest organization behind as he does.

“I’ve had a multifaceted relationship,” notes Zorgdrager. “It’s been long, it’s been on different sides of the table: from customer to volunteer to another kind of volunteer, and then crossing from the board side to management. So it’s been a delight; it also means it’s not a decision I made flippantly.”

Zorgdrager truly believes in the modus operandi of Kindred and the work that it does. On the surface, Kindred Credit Union operates just like a bank, offering all the same services that the traditional big banks offer.

The one major exception, however, is that at a credit union, every member of

the bank is also a part owner. A percentage of Kindred’s profits are shared with its members, meaning profits stay local rather than accumulating in a few select bank accounts, while members also have the option to choose the direction of the company.

It’s that economic parity and that equality, says Zorgdrager, that really makes the credit union an attractive alternative to the standard banking system “Don’t you want to be part of a financial system where you have a say? As a member, you have a vote.

You know how much the CEO is paid. He’s not paid a whole year’s average salary by 9:05 the first day of January,” he asks, referencing the findings of a Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives report on the highest paid CEOs in Canada.

The credit model is a fairly old idea, with Kindred itself being founded 50 years ago. At the time, the impetus for a locally owned and funded bank came from communities that couldn’t get access to regular banking services like today, he explains. But while it’s an old idea, in today’s climate, as wage disparity grows and wealth increasingly becomes concentrated in fewer hands, the model is more relevant than ever.

The biggest challenge facing credit unions today might just be a lack of awareness: people simply don’t know what credit unions are, and that’s something Zorgdrager has been trying to change.

During his time at Kin-

dred, Zorgdrager has managed a growing company which, in turn, has allowed the organization to provide better service to the community. It was a conscious decision by the company, explains Zorgdrager, to focus on growth and the membership.

“Why is that important?

“And now it was time to add some volume, to pay for that investment of additional capabilities.”

In 2016, Zorgdrager presided over Kindred’s name change from the Mennonite Savings and Credit Union. It was an important decision, he explains, to open up Kindred to the wider community, as a lot of people perceived the credit union to be exclusive to the Mennonite community.

“We wanted to grow more quickly. And the biggest [obstacle] that we had encountered in the last six years or seven years at that time was people saying, ‘We love what you do. Your products are amazing, the way you look at finance is

Now, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) has added a new villain to the list of those it says should show more love for rural Ontario: urbanites.

Prior to the provincial budget being announced, the federation announced results of a survey it did with more than 1,000 urban Ontarians (in the Greater Toronto Area), which it says shows rural Ontario doesn’t measure up in the eyes of its urban counterparts.

For example, the survey respondents said they wouldn’t want to live in rural Ontario because they perceive that it lacks good paying jobs, access to health care and amenities.

An overwhelming number of respondents also said they believe the quality of rural schools is inferior to urban Ontario schools.

But it wasn’t all dreary.

In fact, nine out of 10 respondents said they believe the agri-food sector

ROBERTS: Urbanites have the wrong picture of rural living, which has an impact on policy FROM | 13

is capable of creating more jobs. Although they don’t like job availability in rural Ontario now, they think brighter days are ahead.

And they may be right, given the latest Canadian agricultural outlook report, released Tuesday.

The report says Canadian farmers are forecast to see record farm income levels when all the dollars are counted from 2017, and near-record levels in 2018.

Net cash income is forecast to reach a record level in 2017 and remain high in

2018.

At the same time, continued growth in asset values is expected to raise the average farm net worth to $3.16 million.

Does that sound like a sector that’s worthy of government investment?

No question about that.

But there’s a disconnect between people’s perception of rural Ontario, and reality of a prosperous farm economy. The OFA says its survey results illustrate the challenges facing rural Ontario and the opportunities that can be realized with the right investments.

“As OFA advocates for Ontario agriculture, food and rural communities in the lead up to the provincial election, we are asking government to understand the needs and prospects of agri-food and rural communities,” it says. “We are looking for a budget commitment that will spread economic investments around Ontario to produce prosperity in rural and urban areas.”

Ultimately, rural Ontario’s applause for the March budget was muted.

But there’s still a lot of time before the June election

for the Liberals to roll out some farm-specific goodies. And clearly, famers are asking for them.

The Liberals are up against a wall. The Conservatives are more popular in rural Ontario. And now, predictably, Conservative leader Doug Ford is promising on the campaign trail that if he becomes premier, he’ll appoint an MP who’s a farmer as agriculture, food and rural affairs minister.

The OFA has a roadmap for any candidate who wants to champion more public investment outside of urban areas. It’s created

a campaign called Producing Prosperity in Ontario, calling for “distributed investment across rural Ontario” which it says will provide “immediate and ongoing economic and social benefits.”

The federation says investment in small communities improves the physical and social infrastructure in rural Ontario, opening up new opportunities for working and living in communities all across the province.

“This is good for rural Ontario and alleviates the stresses in our urban com-

munities,” it says.

I’m sure that’s true. But this upbeat culture really needs to be sold to urban Ontario. Urbanites have a vision of their poor rural cousins struggling in an environment where the schools are inferior, hospitals are limited, jobs are second-rate and amenities are non-existent.

This isn’t the rural Ontario I know and you know.

But how will the province justify investing outside urban areas if its urban citizens think it’s throwing money away on what they believe is a lost cause.

Even in the city, you can tap into the maple harvest ALI WILSON TAKING SUGAR BUSH TOURS on festival day, or even just driving out to Elmira, you’ll see stretches of maple trees suitable for harvesting the sap that’s boiled down into syrup.

But tapping into the sticky goodness is not just for rural residents thanks to the Urban Sugaring Project.

The Guelph-based cooperative allow for people with few maple trees to contribute to a greater pool of sap, and later reap the benefits with a share of the resultant maple syrup.

Organizer John Dennis spearheaded the project three years ago through Transition Guelph. After two successful seasons in

that city, he expanded into Waterloo Region.

With the help of the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival’s grant disbursement program, Dennis now has around 20 taps running throughout the area. Participants fork over $10 to rent a tapping kit, and another $10 deposit and are on their way to becoming personal maple syrup producers.

Dennis explained the idea behind the project is, consistent with Transition Guelph’s mandate.

“We are about giving people skills and the tools to be able to do these projects,” he said.

People with a few mature maples on their property may think there’s oodles of maple syrup to be had,

but it takes 40 litres of sap to produce just one litre of maple syrup. And that’s if the tree is one of the better varieties such as the sugar maple. A Norway maple, a popular choice for residential builders that’s common to the area, requires about 70 litres of sap to get that one litre of syrup due to its lower sugar content.

“What happens is the tapping is not that hard, simply you go to a tree and you drill a hole and you put a spigot into it and you collect the sap into a bucket.

Then, you have to take it and boil it down. Now the ratios are quite high, so typically with the sugar maple we are looking at 40 to 1 so for every 40 litres of sap you’re collecting, you

John Dennis launched the Guelph-based cooperative three years ago. get one litre of syrup, so 39 litres have to be boiled off,” he said. “It’s energy intensive, it is actually a little bit of a science and a little bit of magic to get it to the right density.”

Cue the co-operative program. Dennis collects the sap from the Waterloo Region and Guelph, where he has about 120 taps running throughout the season, supplemented by ten of his own, boils it down on his personal wood-burning boilers and divvies the syrup up at the end of the season to all who contributed.

While it’s considerable work for little reward, eating syrup from one’s own backyard tree provides a similar feeling to those who grow their own vegetables – a carrot, for instance, tastes that much better when it’s the product of your own labour.

“People love the idea of having maple syrup, putting it on their pancakes or waffles and looking out and going, ‘Hey that came from my tree!’ That’s a really strong connection that people like,” he explained.

“I think that’s true when

people grow food in their gardens – they love the idea that they are eating a carrot from their backyard.”

Beyond the fascination though of producing something usually for rural homeowners, Dennis says it is so rewarding to make something of what would otherwise be a totally untapped resource.

“The estimate is in Guelph there 3,000-4,000 maple trees. In the greater Waterloo area there are 5,000-6,000 maple trees; the vast majority of those go untapped. So it is this great resource and it’s not being utilized,” he said. “People like maple syrup. They like the idea of especially of having their own maple syrup from their own place, so we are giving people the tools and the opportunity to tap the tree and see what that’s like.”

While the sap is still flowing, participants will happily be seeing their hard work rewarded over the next few months.

Kindred still maintains its strong roots in its Mennonite tradition, with a focus on promoting peace and community well-

being, but he explains that the organization wanted to be inclusive of the larger community.

With the company on new and firm footing, Zorgdrager will be leaving Kindred in a bright place.

He still has a year left in his position as CEO while

the board searches for a replacement. He plans to take some time deciding what he wants to do next, and how best to serve his community. More than anything else, it’s his principles of peace and justice and individual dignity that will guide the way.

A work of fiction based on a whole lot of fact Floradale Mennonite Church to stage playwright Barb Draper’s Family Ties Through Thick and Thin April 13-15 ALI WILSON UNIVERSAL ISSUES SUCH AS losing an elderly parent and the ramifications to the family are something to which many people can relate. They’re also prime material for a local playwright whose work will be staged next month by Floradale Mennonite Church.

The church will be presenting a dinner theatre show, Family Ties Through Thick and Thin: The Story of a Family Losing the Older Generation, with proceeds from the free-will offering going towards Woolwich Community Services and Global Church Sharing Fund of Mennonite World Conference.

Over the last 11 years, the church has presented three original plays every three years with local themes, each having a dinner offered before the evening performances.

Playwright Barb Draper had previously drawn on local experiences for inspiration, and this effort is no different.

After a chance encounter, she found out that families often struggle when settling their parents’ estates. From that, came the idea for a play about the challenges a family can have when the older generation passes away.

The production follows a family of four children who have just lost their 89 yearold father, showing how each copes with the loss.

Though the subject matter is serious, the play is intended to have more than a few humorous moments for the audience to enjoy.

“It has to do with a father passing away. There are three daughters and a son that have to deal with his death. There is always family dynamics, and every child deals with it differently,” explained Rita Bauman, who is producing the play as well as acting as the spouse of one of the children.

Bauman noted that with the age of the father, meaning elder children, is not only the dynamic at play. There are also the relationships with older grandchildren, making the story one that people of many demographics can relate to.

This is Draper’s fourth play for the

group, following productions of What Shall we do with the Family Farm?, Those Shoes of Peace and Mom, It’s Time to Sell the House. The writer will also be acting as one of the leads in the play, as well as directing.

“She is very talented,” said Bauman of Draper.

Although some of the cast members have been in

each of the plays, there are always some fresh faces for the audience as well. Playing the four children of the Snyder family are Sherri Martin-Carmen, Mary Frey

Martin, Roy Draper and Barb Draper.

Not only does the dinner theatre provide an outing, but it’s also for a good cause. This year’s free-will offering from the performance will go to Woolwich Community Services as well as the Global Church Sharing Fund of Mennonite World Conference.

“We wanted to do something local and something abroad,” explained Bauman, noting that between everyone involved these were their top recipients.

Family Ties through Thick and Thin: The Story of a Family Losing the Older Generation will be running April 13-15 at Floradale Mennonite Church.

Dinner theatre tickets are available for Friday and Saturday evenings, with a matinee performance Sunday at 2:30 p.m. While a free-will offering will be taken for the play, there is a $20 charge for dinner for those wanting that option. The 1.6 hectare portion owned by 1066626 Ontario Ltd. is designated as Industrial/ Commercial Area and zoned Stockyards Industrial Commercial Area (C-8) and contains a golf centre. The 1.2-hectare portion owned by Marhome Farms Ltd. is designated Rural and Restricted Land Use Area and zoned Agricultural (A) and contains a farm. Both properties have sitespecific zoning regulations pertaining to the Temporary Use By-law.

The purpose of the application is to extend the Temporary Use By-law for an additional three year period to allow 1066626 Ontario Ltd. to use the 1.2 hectare parcel owned by Marhome Farms Ltd. for a driving range, while Marhome Farms Ltd. uses the 1.6 hectare parcel owned by 1066626 Ontario Ltd. for crop farming.

ZONE CHANGE APPLICATION 5/2018 Martin’s Family Fruit Farm (1420 Lobsinger Line) The subject lands, described as Part Lots 19 and 20 GCT, are owned by Martin’s Family Fruit Farm and located at 1420 Lobsinger Line (see Map 2). The 41.3 hectare parcel is designated Rural Land Use Area and is zoned Agricultural (A) with site-specific zoning regulations and a Temporary Use Bylaw. The property contains two permanent dwellings and an apple / fruit processing operation along with a mobile home.

This notice will be of interest to any person or organization that is considering selling food and/or merchandise in Elmira on Festival Day. Please be advised that any person or organization not already regulated by the Festival Committee, or is not an established business and member of the Downtown Elmira BIA, must have a Salesperson License from the Township of Woolwich to sell food or goods at the Maple Syrup Festival. Vendor licensing will be enforced.

Why this is necessary?

The Elmira Maple Syrup Festival Committee works diligently each year to create the best and safest Festival possible for both vendors and visitors. In recent years, the number of unlicensed vendors setting up in the downtown core and surrounding areas of Elmira has increased. Pedestrian traffic at the festival has been negatively impacted, and vendors, agencies and community members have raised safety concerns about unregulated food and goods. The Maple Syrup Festival is working with the Township of Woolwich to implement changes to improve the safety of the Maple Syrup Festival for all involved.

Vendor Licensing Will be Enforced: On Festival Day, Enforcement Services Staff will inspect third-party vendors in the downtown core and surrounding areas to ensure they have licenses from the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival Committee or the Township of Woolwich. Unlicensed third-party vendors and vendors without the proper Electrical Inspection Certification, Public Health Approval, or Fire Inspections will be fined if they do not cease operating immediately. The fine to operate on municipal or private property without proper licensing is $350 under the Township’s Licensing By-law 47-2013.

How This Helps Our Community: The Township will use revenue from licensing fees to cover the cost of advertising and enforcement; any remaining revenue will be donated back to the Festival Committee for disbursement to local charities.

Regulation of vendors will ensure fairness among all vendors, will protect the public’s health and safety, and should help to improve pedestrian traffic flow patterns.

Paul Weber, owner of the Commercial Tavern, has very graciously offered his establishment for the event every year. This year sixty-five baskets were received for the silent auction, and 25 door prizes were also donated.

It was a fun time for a great cause with donations going to the Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Foundation.

(Isaac), great-grandfather of Matthew, Sylvia, Austin, Alexandrea â&#x20AC;&#x153;Alleyâ&#x20AC;?, Alyssa, Addison, Morgan, Hannah, and Carson, and great-greatgrandfather of Paolo. Gerry was the oldest of 12 children of the late Arthur and Violet Hargreaves. He served his country during WWII where he met his Sylvia, the love of his life. He brought his family to Canada in 1957 for new and better opportunities.

Gerry enjoyed the peacefulness of nature, gardening, long walks, and above all spending time with his loved ones. At Gerryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held in the Brampton Cemetery at a later date.

Lemon just the right thing for a spring treat

FAISAL ALI A PAIR OF NOVELS set in the post-apocalyptic nearfuture in which most of humanity has been killed off hardly sounds uplifting, but the late Michael PurvesSmith had a hopeful outlook in mind while penning Rocky Mountain Locust.

It was with a sense of optimism that he turned much of his time to pressing issues such as the environment, which in turn served to inspire others to do the same. When PurvesSmith succumbed earlier this year to a sudden bout of cancer, there was a twinge of life imitating art in his passing. Just as the character in his novel sought to create a better world for posterity in the face of so much death, Purves-Smith too, in death, has undoubtedly passed along such a legacy.

“He leaves big footsteps behind,” says young Kitchener resident, Niara van Gaalen, of her friend and mentor. “Big footprints. He was an amazing person as an environmentalist and as a musician, and I’m both of those things as well.”

The void Purves-Smith left in his passing is something that van Gaalen is helping to fill. At just 17 years of age, van Gaalen could certainly be described as an environmental activist. Just this month, she successfully petitioned the Canadian federal gov-

It’s a significant undertaking for one so young, and van Gaalen credits Purves-Smith for helping spark that drive and passion in her.

To get a petition into parliament, it requires the sponsorship of an MP, as well as a minimum of 500 signatures within 120 days, criteria van Gaalen was able to solicit. From there the

MP that sponsored it, Raj Saini, will be able to table the petition, after which the government has 45 days to provide a response.

“The petition asks the government to create a new financial security. It’s similar in concept to a war bond in that it allows the general public to invest money in a crisis for a critical cause,” explains van Gaalen.

“The money would go to two important goals: protecting 90 per cent of

Canada’s land and aquatic area as a permanent natural reserve and a move to zerocarbon, hopefully by 2024.

That’s the goal.”

It’s an ambitious target at that, but van Gaalen believes Canada is positioned uniquely, in both temperament and ability, to tackle it. For one, while protecting 90 per cent of Canada’s geography from exploitation and destruction may seem a massive constraint, most of the country’s popula-

“The idea is not to prevent people from going on that land, it would just protect it so that wildlife would be safe on that land,” says van Gaalen.

I made these Lemon Cheesecake Mousse Cups for the seniors’ dinners that I do and many people raved about them. I am sure a few people turned up their noses... but at least they did so quietly and did not create a fuss.

I garnished them with fresh fruit and finely grated chocolate. Just a simple lemon slice and a sprig of mint would be lovely, too. Now, if you are feeling industrious you can make a lemon pie filling from scratch. It would be much better than a boxed filling.

Q. How did WCopyfind, software typically used to detect plagiarism, help illuminate inspiration for some of William Shakespeareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plays?

A. Of course, researcher

Dennis McCarthy and English professor June Schlueter are not suggesting that William Shakespeare plagiarized, writes Michael Blanding in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;New York Times,â&#x20AC;? but rather that the Bard read and was inspired by an unpublished manuscript (â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Brief Discourse of Rebellion and Rebelsâ&#x20AC;?) written in the late 1500s by George North, a minor figure in the court of

Queen Elizabeth.

Combining WCopyfind and literary analysis, McCarthy and Schlueter conclude that Shakespeare likely consulted Northâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s manuscript to write 11 plays, including â&#x20AC;&#x153;King Lear,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Macbeth,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Richard IIIâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Henry V.â&#x20AC;?

Their focus was common words and phrases: For example, in the manuscriptâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dedication, North urged those who see themselves as ugly to strive to be inwardly beautiful, using words like â&#x20AC;&#x153;proportion,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;glass,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;feature,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;deformedâ&#x20AC;? and others. In the opening soliloquy of Richard III, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the hunchback tyrant uses the same words in virtually the same order to come to the opposite conclusion: that since he is outwardly ugly, he will act the villain he appears to be.â&#x20AC;?

Says McCarthy, â&#x20AC;&#x153;People donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realize how rare these words really are.â&#x20AC;?

Further, Shakespeare uses the same words as North in scenes about similar themes: North uses six terms for dogs, including â&#x20AC;&#x153;trundletail,â&#x20AC;? to argue that â&#x20AC;&#x153;just as dogs exist in a natural hierarchy, so do humans.

Shakespeare uses essentially the same list of dogs to make similar points in â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;King Learâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Macbeth.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? Searching the database Early English Books Online (1473-1700), McCarthy found that â&#x20AC;&#x153;trundle-tailâ&#x20AC;? appears in only one other work before 1623.

obviously, like a giant national park but this would simply expand on our national park system as we already have it. And it should be extensively researched so that we understand the nature of this land and wildlife systems that comprise it.”

Moving to net-zero carbon emissions in just six years, meanwhile, is another extraordinary ask, van Gaalen admits.

“However, if we want to stop catastrophic global warming, we really need to

move to renewable sources of energy as soon as possible. And really this hasn’t been done as proactively as it should have been and so now is the time to act quite drastically in my opinion because there’s no other way we’re going to prevent the catastrophic consequences of climate change.”

It’s not just a matter of asking, ‘can we do it?’ Rather, more and more, the important question becomes ‘how can it be done?’ “[Michael] was more pessimistic than I,” says van Gaalen. “But he did have

hope. He did believe. He did believe it was possible for us to combat climate change.”

Van Gaalen recalls the lengthy discussions and arguments they would have: about the environment, about art; about any number of topics. Purves-Smith was also something of a second music teacher to her.

Van Gaalen started taking lessons from his wife, Shannon, when she was about 8; and Purves-Smith, himself a university music instructor, was often called out of his study to provide the accompaniment.

“As a lot of people said at his funeral, I wasn’t the only person he mentored.

For so many people, students – and not just music students – but for a lot of people he showed them that if they really wanted to do something, it was possible,” recalls van Gaalen.

“He was there for so many people and I think that his legacy of supporting people and their projects, and helping with their creative ideas and trying to make the world a greater, more beautiful place. I think that is his greatest legacy.”

Blind runner not daunted by 500km ultramarathon FAISAL ALI FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL months, local resident Rhonda-Marie Parke will be preparing for the Vol-State “ultramarathon.” It’s a massive challenge for anyone: a 500km trek through the heart of America over a period of four to ten days.

But that challenge is made even more profound, when, like Parke, you have to do it with just eight per cent of your vision.

More than that, Parke says she wants to attempt the marathon without the help of a guide, on whom she typically relies to provide direction while running.

“It’s not my first longdistance run,” explains Parke, saying she had previously run the 900km Bruce Trail in 2014, for example.

“So that’s great,” she says of her previous runs. “You take this thing that you want to do, that you want to show the world that you can do. And, ‘hey all you

other disabled athletes, step up and try and make the world accountable for helping to create this space.’”

However, while Parke can run a massive marathon with the help of guides, manoeuvring in the public space can still be a challenge.

“My frustration is that I can do something like that – maybe not easily, because who can run 900km easily?

– but I still struggle to get to the grocery store. I can’t get to the gym to do the treadmill run without thinking about how many obstacles are between my front door and the bus stop.”

In that way, through her solo run, Parke is hoping to raise the question: what does it mean for a society to be universally accessible? How can we be sure to accommodate everyone equally? What can we do to ensure that regardless of a person’s disability, she or he can participate in society, be it in playing sports, heading to the grocery

store, or anything else that we take for granted?

Parke encourages people with disabilities to advocate, stridently, for themselves and their needs. And she encourages everyone else to ask themselves what they can do to help.

Parke is legally blind, and has had to grapple with that condition all her life.

Her retinas, she explains, lack cones, which are the elements we rely on in brightly lit areas. By contrast our rods assist in lowlight conditions, such as at night, but without providing colours and clarity.

“Basically that means I don’t have any daytime vision,” says Parke.

“So think about if you get up in the middle of the night and it’s dark and you have to make your way to kitchen to get a glass of water, you’re fine. You walk down the hall, down the stairs, you don’t trip on anything, you make it to the kitchen. You turn the light on: now you’re in cone vision.

“You have your water and turn the light back off before heading back to your room. But now you can’t find the stairs, you can’t find the railing, you trip on the shoes that are in the way, you might step on the cat. All those things, because your rod vision is so very slow to acclimatize to light perception and the difference between light and dark.”

In preparation for the Vol-State marathon in July, Parke is planning to attempt a 100km solo run later today. Weather permitting, she will begin in Kitchener in the evening (when her vision is at its peak), and follow a loop that will lead her through Elmira, Maryhill and West Montrose.

Parke is also raising money to help her get to the Vol-State run; after covering expenses, she plans to donate the rest. Those interested in donating can do so through the www. youcaring.com funding page.

Through her run, Rhonda-Marie Parke is hoping to raise awareness of the day-to-day struggles faced by people with disabilities.

Lemon Cheesecake Mousse Cups 1 pkg. lemon pie filling 1/2 cup extra water Crumbs: 1 1/2 cups graham crumbs 1/3 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup melted butter 1 – 250gr light cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup icing sugar 2 cups whipping cream

Prepare lemon pie filling as directed on package, and add an extra 1/2 cup of water.

Cook as directed and cool completely.

Mix graham crumbs, brown sugar and melted butter. Set aside.

Whip cream cheese and icing sugar until light.

In another bowl, beat cream until soft peaks form.

In a large bowl, gently mix the cooled lemon pie filling, the cream cheese mixture and the whipped cream.

Now you are ready to assemble the mousse cups.

I put the mousse into a

large pastry bag and piped it into individual cups.

Put about 1 Tbsp. of graham crumb mixture in the bottom of each cup. Fill with lemon mousse and top with another Tbsp. of crumbs.

Garnish with additional whipped cream and fresh fruit or lemon slices and mint.

Serves 10-12 people.

Despite wet spate earlier on, maple trees in good shape for sap season

[FAISAL ALI / THE OBSERVER] WET CONDITIONS THAT INCLUDED significant flooding this winter had experts concerned about the health of the region’s maple trees, but conditions improved as the season went on.

To produce maple syrup, the most commonly tapped tree in southwestern Ontario is the aptly named sugar maple, though soft maple and red maple are also widely put to use in these parts.

Designated as Canada’s national tree, the sugar maple survives in shade or sunlight and on a variety of flat and sloped locations, but their ideal environment is in deep, moist and well-drained soil.

Following the mass flooding in February, the “well-drained” aspect of the ideal conditions looked rather dicey, especially when snow-cover is ideal for sap flow. However, soil moisture started looking better in March.

“There may be some flooding right now, which is not always ideal for sugar maples. Soft maple and silver maple can handle it, but sugar maples don’t like too much rain, so hopefully we will see some good drainage happening and get it back to normal,” explained expert Todd Leuty from Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. “It was a bit questionable about a

month or so ago, but there is good soil moisture so the trees shouldn’t be under any stress, all in all, despite the flooding even up until recently.”

However, now partway through the season, production yield has seemingly overcome the potential water threat.

Those concerns behind producers, Leuty is hoping for another successful season.

“All in all, I think the sugar maples should be in pretty good shape,” he said, noting the successful production seasons the past two years. “Not often you get three good ones in a row, but we can always hope. Fingers crossed!”
