Marcus Shantz named new president of Conrad Grebel University College

The college last week announced the selection of Shantz as its eighth president effective Oct. 1.

“I went to school at Conrad Grebel. I’ve been on the board there. It was a plea-

sure to be asked to serve there – it’s very special for me,” said Shantz of the new position.

“It’s going to be a whole new world. Or at least a world I haven’t been part of for a while.”

Shantz said his name arose when the college was discussing candidates, the idea coming as something of a surprise to him.

“I was nominated for the role. That’s how it was formally: my name came up at the selection com-

mittee, and I agreed to let my name stand. I’m happy how it came out.”

The college has had an interim president (Jim Pankratz) since last October following the five-year tenure of Susan Schultz Huxman.

Better housing, transportation options key to keeping older residents in Woolwich, says report STEVE KANNON THE ABILITY TO STAY in the community as they age, with access to necessary services, tops the priority list of older residents, according to a new report from the Age-Friendly Woolwich Advisory Committee.

The group presented its findings this week to township councillors, who accepted the report but weren’t ready for a wholesale embrace of its recommendations. Housing, transportation and access to services are the top priorities for Woolwich’s seniors, though many of these issues aren’t within the control or budgetary reach of the municipality.

Still, the committee would like the township to adopt what it calls an agefriendly lens for future decisions, from planning and development to the offering of recreation services.

“The goal is to make Woolwich a great place to grow old,” committee member Linda Snyder told councillors meeting Tuesday night.

To that end, the committee sees a future in which older residents are supported to age in place in their community by having access to personal care, health services, mental health services, nutritious meals and food related support, community dining, homemaking services, exercise programs, home maintenance and adaptation, yard work services, transportation services, day programs, hospice and end of life support and caregiver support.

It’s a wide scope.

4. There are opportunities for seniors to participate in leisure, social, cultural and spiritual activities with people of all ages and cultures.

5. Older people are treated with respect and are included in civic life.

6. There are opportunities for employment and volunteerism that cater to older persons’ interests and abilities 7. Age-friendly communication and information is available.

8. Community support and health is tailored to older persons’ needs. aspect, Cathy Harrington, executive director of Community Care Concepts and a member of the group’s steering committee, said the aging population and need for services is already outstripping the supply.

“The demands are increasing at a much greater pace than we can keep up with,” she said.

In polling seniors about what they’d like to see – via group sessions, public meetings and online, for instance – there’s a particular need for housing and transportation options, she added. Moreover, people want to live within easy access, perhaps walking distance, of amenities such as shopping and services such as medical care.

“People wanted access to more,” she said of the responses garnered by the committee.

Fueled by a real sense of belonging to a community, with ties to family, friends and neighbours, people want to stay in the township, said Snyder.

The wish-list of requirements to do that seemed a little daunting to council, however.

Coun. Patrick Merlihan took a cautionary approach to the recommendations, asking the delegates about the group’s expectations of council’s role.

“What are your assumptions about what the township can do? Did you have assumptions ... going into this [process] about what comes next?”

His reservations were shared by Coun. Mark Bauman, who was careful to note council accepting the report wasn’t necessarily an endorsement of its recommendations, joking that they shouldn’t get the impression that “anything you ask for, you will receive.”

“This year, we have had 20 blocks come in with red and white tulips in honour of Canada,” said Petrie. “ It has been a compiled as a quilt and it will go to the Mennonite Central Committee’s New Hamburg

New Hamburg Relief Sale turns tasty treats and item auctions into MCC’s good work overseas LIZ BEVAN AFTER HALF A CENTURY, the New Hamburg Relief Sale has become a staple, and much anticipated part of the Mennonite Central Committee’s fundraising efforts for its international work.

On May 26 and 27, the New Hamburg Fairgrounds will be teeming with volunteers and buyers looking for their next tasty treat, quilt or piece of furniture, and the money is all going to a good cause.

Rick Cober Bauman, executive director of MCC Ontario, says this year’s focus is on the famine that has been officially declared in South Sudan and Nigeria. It isn’t just about giving those suffering a box of food, however. MCC is also focusing on the systemic issues that may have caused the famines.

“We are hoping that the message around all of our work, including the relief

sale, could be that we are active in responding to the famine in Nigeria and South Sudan and interestingly enough, it is partly an emergency food response, but it is also a peace building response,” he said. “A lot of the time it isn’t because of insufficient rain, or because of growing techniques, it is really because violence makes communities so unstable that people can’t or don’t plant crops because they may not be there to harvest them, or they believe that crops will get damaged or destroyed.

All of those things hugely contribute to food insecurity and eventually famine.”

The sale will have plenty of vendors and auctions – something for everyone, says Cober Bauman.

In selecting a new president, the college’s board of governors cited Shantz’s civic leadership abilities, including his time as board chair of The Centre In The Square and Silver Lake Mennonite Camp, and his board experience with Ten Thousand Villages and Conrad Grebel itself. He has also held leadership roles at Rockway Mennonite Church and Mennonite World Conference.

“Marcus is a strong supporter of the college’s unique identity and mission,” said Fred Redekop, board of governors chair, in a statement. “His business and administrative experience and his background in law have equipped him to lead strategically, fiscally, and creatively into the next decade. Marcus has a remarkable capacity for insightful inquiry and for developing collaborative partnerships.

He will provide strong leadership as the next president of Conrad Grebel

University College.”

The new job will see him helping to set the overall course for the college.

“You’re responsible for what happens at the college – the day-to-day stuff and the overall governance and direction,” said Shantz.

With that in mind, the focus is to provide support for the students, to foster the community that is Conrad Grebel, he said, noting students face much different circumstances than was the case even in the early 1990s when he

was a student there.

“Students today have challenges that we don’t even understand. When I was a student, we talked about how the Baby Boomers had it so easy, but, really, my generation had it easy compared to what students go through today.”

With his new job starting in October, Shantz is currently busy with the transition at Mercedes Corp., the St. Jacobs-based property management company.

“There’s a lot of work to be done. But no one is irreplaceable.”

Event encourages women to take to the skies Held at Breslau flight centre, Girls CAN Fly! promotes an increase in the number of female pilots ALI WILSON A CELEBRATION OF WOMEN in aviation hoping to ignite hopes of pursuing careers in aviation took place over the weekend at the Region of Waterloo International Airport.

Going into its sixth year, the annual Girls CAN Fly! event is held to encourage young women to become involved in the aviation industry.

“The event was established to promote the aviation industry to girls and young women to give them an opportunity to learn and talk to women in the industry. The women-to-men ratio in the aviation industry has improved over the last few years, but there is still a huge opportunity for women to get involved. And with the shortage of pilots right now, this is a prime

opportunity to do that,” said Caroline Rose of the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre.

Some 240 girls and young women took advantage of the free flights, a 30-min airplane ride or 20-min helicopter ride, toured the flight centre and met industry representatives.

Nanette Jozwiak lends her services each year with the event.

“I volunteer for these events because it is so inspiring to have young girls come, the energy is phenomenal, and I just love it,” said Jozwiak. “I think for young girls to see role models and to see that they can actually do this, you know that this is actually something they can do this for a career I think is really good and it is really good exposure for them.”

A retired Air Canada pilot

originally from Galt, Jozwiak was the company’s ninth female pilot.

“When I joined the airline, we were one per cent – females were one per cent of Air Canada. I was the ninth female pilot for Air Canada, now we have probably over 200 women that fly for Air Canada. So there are more and more women getting involved in aviation and I think it is due to events like this – it is really good for them,” said Jozwiak.

Her career in aviation began as a hobby, and from there lead her to fly medical evacuation flights, Purolator, City Express out of Toronto Island Airport and finally to her position at Air Canada in 1986.

“I just was so enthralled with, from young up really, I was amazed at how those big airplanes could

get up in the air and how they could stay there and fly, so my dad would bring me to this airport to the air shows. After my first flight I was hooked, and from that flight on that’s what I did,” said Jozwiak. “I knew that flying was what I wanted to do, once I got into that airplane there was no holding me back anymore.”

For Jozwiak, who says she didn’t have this opportunity when she learned to fly, it is really rewarding to see the young girls so excited to want to learn everything about flying.

Natalie Groves is one of those girls. Like Jozwiak she has had an interest in flying from a young age.

The 11-year-old from Lester B. Pearson Public School attended the event with her dad Scott after he received correspondence from the flight club about the day to

promote women in aviation.

Groves says she is happy to be at the age where she can still day dream about her future, without having to make firm plans, but that this event has been an amazing opportunity to speak with women in the industry and learn more about pursuing it either professionally or recreationally.

“I am debating over it, I am still not at that age yet where you have to figure out what you want to be. All of dad’s friends keep asking me if I’m going to be a pilot.

I’m not too sure, just walking around seeing what I like,” said Groves. “I am really enjoying it (the event), just kind of walking around looking at things, we keep discovering things and I’m like pulling him everywhere around.”

One of the many industry representatives present at the event was Julie Beverstein from Porter Airlines.

Twelve per cent of Porter’s flight operators are female, double what you would find in Canada, Beverstien said.

“We try to promote the company to be very female friendly, we do that by promoting a really good work/ life balance so that people can be mothers and still follow their passion in aviation.”

Her second time attending the event, Beverstien said it is important to do grass-root events like this to begin cultivating the next generation of aviators.

“We really believe that if we engage with young girls now that they will consider aviation as a career maybe in 15-20 years,” said Beverstien.

Spreading the gravel around Woolwich will spend $173,000 this year to upgrade 17.2 kilometres of gravel roads in the township, representing 14.4 per cent of the total gravel road inventory.

Meeting this week, councillors awarded a contract to Joe Kerr Ltd. to supply and place some 15,243 tonnes of gravel at a cost of $11.15 per tonne, up significantly from $8.79 last year.

The price increase reflects higher gravel and, particularly, haulage costs.

Roads slated for sections of new gravel include Tilman Road, Weisenburg Road, Tribe Road, Wollis Road, Zuber Road and Maryhill Road.

Drawing up a plan for Barnswallow Barnswallow Drive in Elmira will remain as pockmarked as the surface of the moon, but the township is at least thinking about ways to improve it, bringing on the engineering firm GHD to design a future reconstruction project.

Councillors this week awarded a contract for $129,000 to the firm. It will look at options for rebuilding the road between Church and First streets.

Approving the tender award, Coun.

Patrick Merlihan noted there’s still not enough money in the budget to do the actual work, which remains

tentatively scheduled for next year.

Costs are estimated at $3 million, with some $600,000 needed from senior governments.

Director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley said he remains “optimistic” that grant requests will provide the funding necessary for the project to proceed.

On-farm business to continue A neighbour’s complaint about an on-farm business has been dismissed by the Ontario Municipal Board, allowing for the operation to continue under conditions set by Woolwich Township.

Mark Demandt brought the matter to the quasi-judicial planning authority

after Woolwich council’s decision in December to let Aden Brubacher continue to operate a metal fabricating shop on his 100-acre farm at 1220 Halm Rd. Granted permission in 2010 to operate the business, Brubacher subsequently exceeded the maximum size of the operation’s footprint, added a spray-painting booth without proper clearances and shifted to a non-farmrelated business. Caught out, he then requested a zone change from the township to legalize the operation.

At the time, Demandt insisted the operation was better suited for an industrial area, citing residents’ concerns about truck traffic, speeding and the safety of pedestrians, particularly children walking to a nearby parochial school.

In a May 12 decision, however, OMB member Sharyn Vincent dismissed Demandt’s appeal, upholding Woolwich’s position.

Scheifele is athlete of the year Kitchener native Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets got the nod Tuesday night as the winner of the 19th Annual Athlete of the Year Award, selected by the Kitchener Sports Association.

He edged out a number of local athletes, including Elmira’s Garrett Rank.

In listing Scheifele’s 2016 accomplishments, the organization pointed out that he ended the NHL season with a plus-16, was on the winning team

Canada roster at the World Championships in Russia, and played on team North America in the World Cup of Hockey in Toronto.

In 2016 Rank competed in the Canadian Open, was hired as a full-time NHL referee, won the Canadian Men’s Mid- Amateur golf tournament for the third year in a row and was asked to join the national amateur golf team to represent Canada.

Ken Brooks, co-founder of the event, credits Rank’s national success for his nomination this year.

This year’s other nominees included Alec Elliot for swimming, Darryl Fitzgerald for lawn bowling, Alyssa Lagonia for soccer, Jamal Murray for basketball, Dhane Smith for lacrosse and Kevin Sorley for sledge hockey.

Hot Toronto real estate market having a spillover effect in the region LIZ BEVAN SKYROCKETING PRICES IN URBAN centres such as Toronto have homebuyers looking elsewhere to get into the market.

With the average residential prices in the Greater Toronto Area reaching a whopping $873,631 in the first quarter of 2017, buyers are heading out of the city to find more reasonably priced homes. As a result, average prices in centres surrounding the GTA are also increasing, as is demand.

In this area, the average price of all residential homes in April increased by 39.7 per cent to $512,656 compared to April 2016.

Detached homes sold for an average price of $594,453 an increase of 40.1 per cent.

James Craig, president

of the Kitchener Waterloo Real Estate Association, says houses have been flying off the shelves in Waterloo Region, and prices are going up.

“I think one of the biggest things that we have seen is that we are listing just as many homes as we have historically, but the biggest piece that has changed is the demand from people wanting to buy,” he said. “We are listing just as many homes as we normally are, it is just we are seeing the same sort of trends with aggressive offers, selling over asking prices, and lots of Toronto agents and buyers coming to the market.”

He says if the demand is there, residential home prices will continue to increase, and availability would decrease. While they don’t track how many

buyers are coming to the region from the GTA, he has definitely seen a trend.

What happens in the GTA trickles down into this area’s market.

“We are definitely seeing a major shift since July of last year when we saw this trend start and it just continues. I think it really depends on the demand, to be honest with you. If the demand still continues in those markets, and would push those buyers out of the Toronto market, then we will continue to see this happening,” said Craig. “I think that going forward, we are going to have to keep a close eye on what is happening in Toronto.

In Vancouver, new real estate taxes have been added to homes, targeting foreign buyers and vacant housing – believed to be part of the reason average home prices were reaching unaffordable levels for the average consumer.

Demand has dropped since the changes were made.

Similar taxes have been added to homes in the GTA, but Craig says there are more exemptions, separating the Toronto area from the changes seen in Vancouver. In Vancouver, average home prices dropped from $1,094,936

in 2016 to $969,900 in 2017 after the new taxes were introduced.

“If you become a citizen within four years, if you are student and can prove a post-secondary institution, there is an exemption.

If you are coming to work with a contract, there is an exemption. I think that is what is different,” he said.

“I think the focus is on a tax for foreign buyers and that works in conjunction with the tax that the municipalities now have the power to put on vacant lands and vacant properties. I think those two things combined are more to the point, and not as general as what happened in Vancouver. Another thing about the Vancouver taxes is that it only covered the lower mainland. It only covered a specific geographical location.”

Strong showing for two local teams that competed at robotics competition in St. Louis ALI WILSON TWO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL robotics teams found themselves among the final group of competitors at an international event last month in St. Louis, their creations taking on the best from some 33 countries.

Team 4917 and Sir Lancerbot from Elmira District Secondary School and Team 4678, CyberCavs, from Woodland Christian High School made the trek to St. Louis for the FIRST Robotics Competition Championship.

The international high school robotics competition, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition facilitates the opportunity for students and mentors to put team built robots to the test.

The season begins with teams being briefed on the year’s challenge. Teams are then given a total of six weeks to build a robot, from there the road to worlds begins with a regional and provincial competition that qualifies teams for the championships in St. Louis.

“It is an incredible amount of work in a short period of time: designing, building, making all of the revisions on the robot. Even from the first time you compete to the final time you compete, there are significant changes that hap-

WCHS has competed at worlds the past three years, last year winning their division.

The CyberCavs, consisting of 37 kids and eight mentors, came short in their division finals. Van Pelt said despite the shortcoming from last year, they were extremely proud of the inclusion they were able to provide students and the position they were able to reach.

“We were really happy with this year,” said van Pelt. “Most people tend to think of it as simply robotics and programming, but there is so many other aspects to it in terms of public relations, social media, fundraising, developing a business program. One of the strengths of our team this year was scouting and strategy so kids can get involved in a variety of different ways which just makes it a fantastic program that includes more kids. So it has been a really exciting year.”

Similar to the WCHS, Sir Lancerbot was beat out in their division finals.

“We worked every bit as hard as last year and we came this close and didn’t make it, so it was a pretty sweet feeling I think for the team to actually get there,” said Ron Fletcher, computer engineering technology at EDSS and lead coach for the team. “For me it was a great reward, but it was also a great teaching moment, your hard work paying off over the year. So to make finals we were ecstatic to say the least.”

Two of the 25 EDSS members had been to worlds four years ago in St. Louis, for the rest of the team it was a completely new experience.

A first-time team member Carson Cass, a Grade 12 student, moved schools to be a part of the team after watching the regional competition last year in Waterloo.

“Last year I went to the competition in Waterloo and it was so energetic and big, I don’t know the energy was good enough that I was interested in joining this year,” he explained.

Cass said the experience of attending worlds in his first year on the team was nothing like he could have imagined.

“Worlds in St. Louis was a whole new level, it was huge,” said Cass. “The event went very well. We made it to the finals in our field so we were just one step away from making it to the best of the best, the last game.”

Mentors from various businesses help the students with each facet of the experience, from the fundraising and marketing to the coding and physical build of the robot.

“People think ‘oh kids got together to build a robot’ and probably its more accurate to say a community got together and mentored these guys to build an amazing robot and that I think with this community you can’t really quantify that,” said Fletcher. “This is a community that invests and we are lucky to be here for sure, I would say it makes a difference for sure.”

The season cost for teams to make it to Worlds is between $40,000 and $60,000 to build robots, travel to the competitions, and cover the registration for the events themselves.

“The financial commitment is substantial and we get a lot of support from businesses to make this happen,” said Fletcher.

The presentation of Kitchener-Conestoga’s top 150 citizens will take place on Aug. 1 at Castle Kilbride in Baden where the 150 nominees will receive a token of their contribution to the constituency.

“We have gone out and gotten a nice coin specifically made with this honour in mind and Canada 150. We would like to think that this is going to be a special opportunity to just say thanks,” said Harris. “A lot of folks, they don’t expect this recognition, but

we think it is important to do so, especially on Canada’s 150th birthday.”

Harris wants to encourage as many nominations as possible before the big day in August. So far, he says they have received upwards of 100 forms.

“It will be something a little bit different that our usual quilt shows,” said Petrie.

For Petrie, one of the biggest draws is going to be Audrey Vrooman at the quilt trunk show, held at St. James Lutheran Church.

Vrooman’s displays will take visitors through her transition from a traditional quilter, to something a bit more modern.

“She started out as a traditional quilter, but now she is very into modern quilting. She goes to con-

ferences all over with her modern quilts and she is a long arm quilter,” she said.

“That means that she uses a big machine, about 14 feet long, and then you have your machine that goes along on the rod so you can cover a lot of territory a lot faster than hand quilting.

Hand quilting is a long process, so today more and more quilters are moving to the long arm machines.

They can do pretty intricate patterns and it is done a lot of faster, usually in a few hours.”

Events will run from May

23 to 26, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on May 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Jacobs Schoolhouse Theatre, St. James Lutheran Church, The Village Silos, St. Jacobs Mennonite Church and Quilt Essentials on King Street. Some events are free, while others charge a small admission price.

Age-friendly plan needs to jibe with dollars and sense NO ONE WILL DISAGREE with the idea of making Woolwich a more welcoming place for seniors. Ditto for the concept of helping older residents stay in their homes longer.

It’s with that mindset that the township can accept the findings of the Age-Friendly Woolwich Advisory Committee. Accept, mind you. Not adopt.

Some of what’s including in the Age-Friendly Community Plan discussed this week by Woolwich council amounts to motherhood issues: talking points and platitudes with which no one disagrees. Where things get iffy, however, are with recommendations that are clearly beyond the township’s purview and/or involve increases in spending that simply can’t be justified.

On the topic of greater flexibility in housing, for example, some of that is already underway from a planning perspective, including greater latitude for so-called granny flats and the in-law suites. Greater accessibility has been mandated by the province. But changes to housing designs and amenities will be led primarily by the market: If there’s a demand, developers and builders will meet it. Given the shifting demographics, that’s likely to be the case.

The report highlights the aging population. Between the 2001 and 2011 census, for instance, the percentage of township residents 65 years of age or older grew to 15.1 per cent from 14 per cent. The Region of Waterloo’s growth forecast predicts the population of those over the age of 55 will hit 31.3 per cent within the next 15 years. Rural areas of the region are likely to age at a faster rate.

An aging population presents many challenges to government services, from federal health care and income assistance right through to municipal programming. Into that environment, it makes sense that residents will need a greater range of services and access to them. Smaller communities such as Woolwich just aren’t equipped for that, nor is it likely they’ll ever be.

Much as newcomers to the country end up in larger urban centres because they are a huge draw on social services, seniors will find disadvantages to staying in small communities. It’s not feasible for Woolwich to have the full range of offerings – from medical care to shopping amenities – that can be found in, say, Kitchener, which itself doesn’t have the resources of Toronto.

Where the report identifies input from residents about being able to walk to a grocery store, by way of example, that’s just not going to happen in places like Conestogo or Maryhill – the government isn’t going to get into the supermarket business. Delivery services, on the other hand, may become a more workable option as the market matures.

The report talks extensively about transportation.

That is a challenge for those without a private vehicle.

The public transit that does exist is underused and costly, so adding to the service to make it more useful to seniors isn’t a real option. Services such as Kiwanis Transit and the volunteer drivers arranged by agencies such as Community Care Concepts are already oversubscribed, but there is a limit on both subsidies and volunteerism.

By all means, solicit feedback about future needs, but resulting recommendations have to be tempered by the reality of what can actually be done, and how much money (i.e. almost none) is available for such things.

You know it’s not business as usual in the U.S. when the cross-border traffic starts flowing the other way.

All the posturing shows we live in preposterous times WORLD AFFAIRS All the talk of special prosecutors and the like will not bring the man to book. The soap opera will continue and no amount of dysfunction in the White House will make it stop until early 2019 at best.

Even though a great deal of damage will have been done by then.

Some of the damage will only affect the United States. Donald Trump doesn’t often violate the Constitution, but he breaks all the unwritten rules that regulate the behaviour of public officials: don’t use your office to enrich yourself, don’t give plum jobs to your relatives, don’t fire the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation because he’s leading an investigation into possibly treasonous behaviour among your close associates.

However, these are domestic American problems, and the American republic will survive them. In four years, or at most eight, Trump will be gone, and

more-or-less normal service will resume. But the same recklessness, brought to bear on foreign affairs, may have far bigger consequences.

Most of the concern at the moment is focused on Northeast Asia where Trump’s scarcely veiled threat to “do something” about North Korea could escalate a long-standing problem into a “major, major conflict.” But most other major players in the Northeast Asian game are grownups who do not want a nuclear war in their region, so the risk of a calamity there is much smaller than it looks.

The Middle East is more frightening than north east Asia in this context, for half the countries of the regions are already at war one way or another, none of the regimes really feels secure – and Trump has already launched a missile strike against the Syrian regime.

He justified it as retaliation for the alleged use of poison gas by the Assad regime – an allegation that has not been conclusively proved – but most people in the region take it as a sign that he is joining the

Sunni side of a region-wide Sunni-Shia war.

This alignment didn’t start with Trump, of course. For more than half a century the United States has seen Saudi Arabia, the effective leader of the Sunni bloc, as its most important ally in the Middle East, and for the past forty years it has regarded Iran as the root of all evil in the region.

Iran is the leader of the Shia bloc. In fact, it is the only big and powerful Shia country. Trump has already expressed hostility towards Iran, and his intentions to abandon the treaty that President Obama signed to contain Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions for the next ten years. And on Friday, Trump is making his first foreign visit – to Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the defacto ruler of Saudi Arabia and leader of the Sunni bloc.

Although Prince Mohammed is almost forty years younger than Donald Trump, the two men share several striking characteristics. The Saudi Arabian leader (his father, King Salman, is 81 and not fully functional) is not as igno-

rant as Trump, but the two men are almost twins in temperament. The Prince is just as vain as Trump, just as impulsive, and just as likely to start a fight he can’t finish.

Prince Mohammed’s escalation of Saudi Arabian support for the al Qaedalinked faction in the Syrian civil war two years ago was the direct cause for the Russian intervention that ultimately saved the Assad regime. His military intervention in Yemen, trying to put the Saudi Arabianimposed president back into power has led only to an unwinnable war and a looming famine in the country. And he’s up for fighting Iran too.

In an interview broadcast this month on Saudi TV he said: “we will not wait until the battle is in Saudi Arabia. We will work so the battle is in Iran.” Why? Because, according to the Prince, Iran’s leaders are planning to seize Islam’s most sacred city, Mecca, in the heart of Saudi Arabia, and establish their rule over the world’s billion and a half Muslims.

Making changes to established neighbourhoods always raises some hackles EDITOR'S NOTES Plans for this Roger Moore are anything but Saintly.

No, not the British actor who played Simon Templar (The Saint) and, later, James Bond. In this case, the area around Roger and Moore streets in Waterloo, where some of the residents aren’t chuffed about plans for a large development that would change the character of their neighbourhood.

Lands currently occupied by ODC Tooling & Molds and some adjacent properties owned by the company – six single-family houses and a triplex – would be cleared in favour of a mix of townhouses, stacked townhouses and apartment buildings up to six storeys high. The proposal also features a mix of commercial and office space.

To do that, Ontario Die Company Ltd. is looking for a zone change to permit medium-density de-

velopment in what is currently a low-density area, mostly older, single-family homes.

Residents worry that adding 300 units – expected to offer up 630 bedrooms – would create congestion, traffic woes and densities unsuitable for the area.

Caroline Armstrong, a senior who lives on Moore Street across from the plant, is part of a group organizing against the development.

“I moved from Toronto to get away from all of that,” she says.

“When I go to Toronto, it’s always getting worse. I really don’t miss that. I’m always so glad to get home to my little Waterloo ... but it’s not so little now,” Armstrong adds.

With development in the area, particularly on nearby Union Street, there have already been changes in the neighbourhood, not all for the better, she says. Even some of the smaller projects have created problems, particularly during the construction phase.

benefit to the established residents.

That’s where the pursuit of dollars – the reason for development – and a provincially-imposed mandate increased densities and infilling of so-called brown-field sites conspire against residents of many a neighbourhood.

In theory, this is the kind of mixed-use development – combining residential, commercial and retail uses within walking distance of each other – that is now touted as the standard to combat the suburban sprawl that has shaped the way we live for the past five or six decades.

The description of socalled compact communities puts me in mind of Europe, where densities are higher and people live within an easy walk or bike ride of most of the amenities of daily living. Because most communities developed before the advent of the automobile, they’re very much people-centric as opposed to the carcentered towns and cities of North America. A development like this – or any

other project – is not going to change that, so traffic and parking (this proposal calls for 325 parking spaces in total, essentially just one for every unit) will be a problem. And likely worse than claimed, as officials continue to overestimate how many people will opt for alternatives over having a car.

This is not Europe, where people actually do walk and cycle as a means of transportation, not just recreation. Public transit is convenient and well used. In short, the antithesis of how we do things here. Living there, you can quite easily do without a car.

Trouble is, that ideal isn’t likely to translate here, the land of vinyl siding, asphalt and big-box retail.

In all the talk of more human-scale communities, there’s no mention of aesthetics. For me, that’s the make-it-or-break-it part of the equation: our ugly built environments foster neither pride of place nor a desire to be out on foot, interacting with the place where we live something to enjoy

in its own right. It’s going to take a monumental effort at creating something better to get us out of the suburban model: Shifting from our box of a house to our box of a car to the box where we shop and the box where we work.

The insides may be nice and comfortable, as we shut out the world and the others who happen to live in the same town, but the shared spaces are not conducive to creating the kind of community envisioned by proponents of a liveable city.

When urban advocacy pioneer Jane Jacobs, for instance, argued that people make the city, she was countering the orthodoxy of pseudo-utopian planning that saw the destruction of inner cities in favour of ugly, soul-crushing concrete highrises that quickly became worse than slums, ultimately torn down as a massively expensive – and not just in monetary terms – failed experiment.

build proposed, she and her neighbours are more than a little worried.

They’ll be looking for an explanation about how simple logistics of issues such as traffic and parking will be addressed – the information provided so far isn’t reassuring.

“That’s an incredible amount of people to add to the area – there’s already a problem with parking.

Where are they going to go?” asks Armstrong. “I think the density is bad enough, but the traffic on the street will be a real problem.”

Her concerns, and those of her neighbours, are not unexpected. They arise with pretty much every new development of any size, in every community. There are legitimate worries about increasing densities and how they’ll fit into the existing neighbourhood. Once built – and developer-driven growth almost always proceeds, whether by legal force or complicit officials – the problems are rarely as bad as the worst-case scenario, but the project almost never provides

This is paranoid nonsense. Only one tenth of the world’s Muslims are Shia. The only three Muslim countries (out of 50) where they are the majority are Iran, Iraq and tiny Bahrain.

Iran sends troops to help the beleaguered, Shiadominated Assad regime in Syria, and money and weapons to the (Shia) Hezbollah movement in Lebanon. AFTER A SUTHERLAND CUP win, Elmira Sugar Kings’ head coach Ty Canal decided to step down from the team’s coaching staff on a high note.

The Junior B hockey club announced the change to their coaching staff on May 12, but there will still be a familiar face behind the bench in Trent Brown, an assistant coach under Canal.

To spend more time with his young family, Canal is stepping aside after his first full season at the helm of the Sugar Kings.

He says the team and the organization gave him a great season, making his job easy.

“It has been great. They are definitely a topnotch organization. They care about the players and when that happens, results kick in and that has happened,” said Canal. “They just want to see the players succeed and when you can get everyone on the same page, like we did this year, you can go far and watch the player raise the trophy.

That is the end goal every year, and everyone has that mentality. It is easy to work with them. They make things easy. On my side, I just had to worry about coaching. You just have to worry about the players.”

Brown has taken over the head coaching role, and Canal says it was a natural fit for his assistant to be-

come his replacement.

“He will do a good job.

He is committed, he has been there a while now and he puts in the time and effort. He knows all the players and knows hockey, right? He is there for the right reasons and he wants to see the guys move on and wants the players to improve and develop in the right way and he will put them on the right road,” said Canal.

Brown says he plans on keeping the same kind of strategy that helped the team have a winning season.

“It is exciting and I am really looking forward to the opportunity and the challenge. It will be something new and something different, but at the same time, I will be taking the same approach that the team has taken in the past.

Our expectation is to compete and to put ourselves in a position to win every game,” he said.

With Sutherland Cup in hand, and the 2016-2017 behind him, Brown says he is already looking at next year’s recruits. The long postseason has the club at a disadvantage, however.

“As the last team standing, everybody else has already done their exit interviews and meetings with their players over a month ago, so we are kind of late to the parade,” he said, adding his eyes are already looking ahead. “There is an array of things that you

Waterlogged fields put a damper on season starts ALI WILSON All the rain earlier in the month may have been good for the grass, but not for those teams waiting to play on it, as sports fields in Wellesley and Woolwich are only now becoming usable.

The wet conditions made the turf unusable and, even when the rain stopped, delayed attempts to get equipment out on the fields to prepare them for soccer and baseball teams.

Brad Voisin, Wellesley’s director of recreation, said although this isn’t the worst year they have had, the rain put an end to use of the fields that began earlier in the spring.

“We had the sports fields all ready to go to let the kids get out and start practicing, and then we got all of that rain and they just got so soft we couldn’t keep equipment on them – we would have just damaged them if we had of let people on,” said Voisin of the conditions early in May. In April and May of 2016, the area received 124.6 mm of rainfall. This year, the region saw 183.4mm of rain-

fall within April and the first week of May alone.

Drier conditions had most of the fields in the township ready this week.

“We just needed a dry spell and we are good to go,” said Voisin. “We have one diamond in Wellesley that will open at the end of next week. We are putting up some new light standards and we weren’t able to get a crane on the diamond.”

That work was expected to be completed this week, however.

Delays were also the order of the day in Woolwich.

Ann McArthur, the township’s director of recreation and facilities, says soccer and ball teams lost approximately 120 hours of play and practice times in the first two weeks of May, with soccer having to cancel all scheduled events and ball teams losing around nine days of playing time.

“Unfortunately the rain has impacted all of the township’s sports field.

All fields were closed from May 1-8,” said McArthur.

Fields in Woolwich are now slowly being opened as officials are waiting for turf to dry and staff to get

on the field with equipment.

“It is always a difficult and very quick transition from winter to spring sports dependant on how much snow is received, how quickly it melts and how the extent of warm weather to dry the fields.

I would suggest that the extent of the wet weather this spring was greater than most years and has delayed our operations.

Often a field looks ready to play on but the moisture limits access to fields with equipment required to do maintenance.”

McArthur said which has set maintenance and turf contractor were delayed about two weeks.

mitted to teaching and, over the years, I have found that people learn better from practical demonstrations than from theory.

If the undivided attention I got from everyone on the river was any indication, this proved correct.

I had them from the word splash!

How good was the demonstration?

Well, how many teachers do you know who get multi-minute standing ovations?

Normally, I would have ended the lesson there.

But, as I made it to shore with ice-cold water dripping from the brim of my hat and rising inside my waders, I could see that those in the front row had a thirst for learning.

And, frankly, experienced teachers like me love it when

our lessons inspire our students to ask questions they have never asked before.

The first one was, “How can an angler get so completely soaked when wading in eight inches of water?”

Or “It appeared that you levitated for a full three seconds after you breached the surface, what caused that?”

Even as I was digging deep into my waders to

ensure I did not unintentionally go over limit with errant fish that might have scurried in, the questions kept coming.

“Your expensive cell phone isn’t waterproof. Why does it still work?” asked one perceptive student.

It was then that I referred her to the question about why abrupt levitation takes place.

Shortly, thereafter, I extended the lesson by be-

ing the only angler in that stretch of water to catch a trout. Not to brag, but the skill I demonstrated in doing so, caused many of the more serious anglers to mumble vows to take up golf or some other activity that might normally offer a better chance of catching a fish than the technique I just used.

And, again, the fact that I caught one caused them to ask more questions such

as, “Is it common for fish to suffer from severe mental disabilities?”

The point here is I gave back to the outdoors community yet again. And while I am quite happy to do so, I think it would be nice to see other veteran anglers and hunters make an effort to do the same every now and again.

I suspect the owners of our local golf courses would agree.

Three Woolwich players part of team’s silver win Waterloo Wildfire skate to a second-place finish at the Eastern Canada Ringette Championships LIZ BEVAN Three girls from Woolwich are the proud owners of silver medals after a second-place finish at the 2017 Eastern Canada Ringette Championships as Team Ontario.

Brianna Jacobi, Rachel Bettke and Maddy Camm are part of the Waterloo Wildfire U14AA Ringette team. After winning the gold medal at provincials in Nepean back in March, they put their game to the test against eastern Canada’s best on Easter weekend. There was plenty of tight play, with many games going down to the final buzzer.

They won four games in a row, then beat Quebec in the semifinals before losing in the gold medal game against New Brunswick 2.

Each province sends their gold medal and silver medal teams to Easterns.

The Wildfire faced off against Quebec 2 in Game 1 of the championships, and Carole Schwartz, a team parent, says it took the girls a while to get into the game, getting a slow start to the tournament.

“It was pretty obvious they hadn’t been in a highpressure game environment for a while, but we managed to win 2-1 with the last goal at only three seconds left,” she said. “At least they got to start with a win, but it wasn’t a pretty win.”

Game 2 was against Prince Edward Island 1, and the girls played much better. The final score was 4-2.

“They found their legs and they found each other,” said Schwartz.

Nova Scotia 2 didn’t put up much of a fight in Game 3, with the Wildfire pulling off a 13-0 win.

“Everything was going right for us in that game. It was a good lesson though, to learn how to pull back

Game 4 was against the best team in the tournament. The only game New Brunswick 2 had lost in their regular season was the gold medal game. They put up a fight against the Wildfire.

“We were down 4-2 with about six minutes left and we ended up winning 5-4.

They were very composed and they are a pretty good team for pushing each other. Even if there is only one minute left on the clock, it isn’t over,” said Schwartz.

The semi-final game came down to overtime, with the Wildfire winning 4-3.

“We pulled our goalie with four minutes left and scored twice to tie it up,” relayed Schwartz.“It was so exciting. Then we scored after ten minutes of overtime. That showed that no matter where we were at in the game, we could pull off the win.”

The final was against previous opponents New Brunswick 2. Schwartz says although the game ended

in a loss, the girls played a clean, fast game with very few whistles.

“The first period was pretty even. There was four minutes left in the game and it was 4-3. They would score one, we would score one, they would score one, we would score one,” she said. “Second period, we ran out of steam. Then they ended up getting an empty net goal with about three minutes left, and we lost 5-3.”

For the girls, the silver medal was bittersweet.

They were happy they had made it that far, but it meant the end of the 20162017 ringette season.

“They all huddled at centred ice and just had a cool down talk. Some of the girls don’t get to make it there more than once or at all, so the fact that they were so successful and that was the only game they lost, it is a huge accomplishment,” said Schwartz.“I think they were a little sad that their season was coming to an end, and that some of the girls, they wouldn’t get to play with again.”

This season proved to be a wild ride for Kings

IT WAS A VERY long season for the Elmira Sugar Kings, but absolutely no one on the team had any complaints about that. A strong season was capped by 27 playoff games that led to the ultimate prize: the Sutherland Cup, awarded to the best Junior B team in the province.

The team finished the regular season in second place in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Midwestern Conference with 77 points from 38 wins and only 11 losses. They didn’t make it to the Cherrey Cup this year despite taking out the Guelph Hurricanes and the Kitchener Dutchmen, followed by a disappointing final series loss against the Listowel Cyclones in Game 6, but the year wasn’t over yet.

The season continued after the Kings earned themselves the wildcard spot in the league-wide Sutherland Cup series. The team made it through the semi-finals in six games against threetime cup winners the Caledonia Corvairs, before moving on to dominate the London Nationals.

victory. They won the first three games of the series (3-2, 2-0, 4-1) before coming up just short of a series sweep in Game 4, losing 6-4.

Former head coach Ty Canal says the win only happened because the team banded together after the tough Cherrey Cup loss to Listowel. It wasn’t all smooth sailing.

“It is not often that you get a second chance at the ultimate goal. The first practice after that loss was tough,” he said. “Any time you lose it isn’t easy and that was the mood. We had a talk with them, though and by that second practice, everybody had flipped a switch. It was good hockey to watch.”

For Canal, however, it isn’t just about the big win at the end. It was about seeing the players just get better and better on the ice.

“Defensive play was huge for us. We worked on that all throughout the regular season … and when things are tight and you have a one-goal game, or if we are taking too many penalties, that could end the season,” he said. “They really stepped up and really focused on that, and I think we elevated from there. We want to be tough to play against. Those

things from a coaching standpoint, watching the players develop, it is just fun to be there.”

For Kings’ forward Jake Brown, the 2016-2017 season marked the fourth time he has won the Sutherland Cup, having played his first three years of Junior hockey with Caledonia as the Corvairs rattled off three consecutive cup wins.

Along with three other players on the Kings, it was also Brown’s last year of junior hockey. Brown, goalie Jonathan Reinhart and Joshua Slegers have committed to the University of Windsor Lancers. Quinten Bruce is also be moving on next year, having aged out of Junior.

Mitch Hoelscher will be spending next season with the Ottawa 67s. He was drafted 56th overall in the 2016 OHL Priority Draft and was called up six times this season.

Canal has stepped down from the team, with assistant coach Trent Brown taking over the role of head coach. Canal says a team like the Sugar Kings is hard to find.

“You can get a team that is really close and they all want to play for each other, but that is hard to find.

These guys are all friends,” he said.

LIZ BEVAN After sitting empty for nearly a decade, the old store on the southwest corner of St. Charles Street and Maryhill Road in Maryhill is getting a facelift.

New owners Tara and George Kanellis are weeks away from opening Maryhill Market and have renovations in full swing from the floor to the ceiling.

George’s family has been in the restaurant business for decades. His father founded Kitchener’s Golf Steak House and Seafood, but Tara is the mastermind behind the project.

“I have worked at Golf’s with George for 24 years, and now my kids will be in high school and it is something that I have always wanted to do,” she said, adding that the new market will be fulfilling a need in the community. “We don’t have much around here in the way of that. It is at least 15 minutes or more for something like milk or toilet paper.”

The pair are planning to have fresh fruits and vegetables from local growers, some coolers for pop and ice cream, a delicatessen counter with to-go sandwiches and anything else you might find in a corner store like milk and sugar.

There are also plans for an outdoor patio on the St. Charles Street side of the building.

And that’s just wrong.

In a country like ours, with a booming wine industry, the inability of both airlines and wineries to match meals or snacks with Canadian wine sends conflicting messages to domestic and foreign travellers alike who are told Canadian wines can run with the pack.

For ages, Canada’s two major airlines have said domestic wineries just can’t provide the required volume. More on this later.

But you may remember that excuse as the same one the LCBO used to give about why its Ontario wine selection was so limited.

Then, however, the LCBO woke up to the fact that customers wanted more Ontario wine options, as part of the growing interest in local products. OK, it said, maybe it could, after all, make an effort to carry some smaller quantities.

ROBERTS: Wineries doing their part to provide

enough stock if the airlines opt to go Canadian FROM | 18

the Ontario market.

That’s a lot of wine. It’s still not enough to make Ontario wineries happy.

They think the LCBO could be doing more to promote their products. But it’s better than before.

Volume is certainly not the problem it once was, before vineyard owners here started transitioning from the table grapes they’d grown for decades, to vinifera wine-quality grapes. With help from the province, new acreage sprung up in three Ontario regions that have turned out to be ideal for growing such grapes – Niagara, Prince Edward County, and southwestern Ontario.

The transition is not totally complete, but it’s no longer a next-year story.

Most grape growers in Ontario now produce grapes for local wineries, or have wineries themselves.

That’s led to the establishment of more than 200 wineries, a top-notch, highstandards program called

Vintners’ Quality Alliance and a proud and influential commodity group called the Grape Growers of Ontario. Its 450-500 members grow around 17,000 acres of vinifera grapes, with a farm gate value of $95-$100 million a year.

And naturally, they think you should drink Ontario wine not only on the ground, but in the air, too. Why let the likes of Air Canada serve you ordinary French wine?

“Demand better quality!” grape growers’ CEO Debbie Zimmerman told 40 members of the Eastern Canada Farm Writers’ Association gathered for their annual meeting last week at the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre.

I agree. Consumers have to push back, or very little changes.

Zimmerman claims that now, Ontario wineries could indeed address airlines’ volume demand.

One way is to offer international-Canadian blended wines, perhaps as a first step towards serving higher

quality Canadian wines that are not blends.

I suppose the thinking is that if Canadian airlines are reluctant to budge from serving non-Canadian wines anyway, blends offer at least a modicum of Canadian content.

This approach will make some Canadian wine aficionados shudder. By definition, blends don’t meet VQA standards for quality. And when it comes to promoting respect for Canadian wine, the present blended offerings won’t get us to where we want to be.

But there’s nothing to say that going into the future, the present offerings are the only options for meeting airlines’ needs. It sounds like a challenge to wineries to come up with tailored, quality selections that are sustainable and affordable.

After all, stuffed into our seats in economy class, we don’t expect the cream of the crop. But likewise, don’t serve us dreck, either domestic or imported. It’s insulting.

While digging down to re-lay the floor, contractors found some history beneath the old floor in artifacts and old newspapers from the 1930s with war headlines and advertisements for what are now vintage cars and clothing.

“We found some little tools and stuff. It used to be a blacksmith shop,” shared Tara. “Then the whole floor was filled. We had to dig up the hardwood and we saw just a couple papers and we were pretty excited, then we ripped up more of the floor and the whole place was filled. They are just so interesting, when you see how much a house cost, or how much a car was. It is the Globe and Mail mostly.

We took them home and read them. A lot of things were the same though, it was surprising.”

The plan is to open in about a month if things keep progressing the way they have. The Kanellises have only owned the building since the end of March.

“We have just been at it, doing renovations, going, going, going, and we are hoping to be open in about five weeks, and we are hoping to do a grand opening in July,” said Tara.

While renovating the Maryhill Market, the Kanellises found hundreds of old newspapers from the 1930s.

LIZ BEVAN Two local girls will be taking a journey from Canaan to Egypt, singing in Drayton Entertainment’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

On stage since 1972, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has delighted audiences with the story of Joseph, his jealous brothers, his adventures through Egypt and

of course, his coat of many colours. The original play was written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Now, Drayton Entertainment is putting on its own production of the popular musical on stage at the Drayton Festival Theatre, directed by Max Reimer. Elmira’s Reece Hodgson and Ava Schmalz will be singing in the Children’s Chorus from May 17 to June 4 after auditioning back in Janu-

ary. They will be joined by Greta Ofner of St. Clements and Rebecca Perry of St. Jacobs.

Reece Hodgson “It feels great. I was really excited,” said Schmalz, adding that the audition song is her favourite in the show. “About two weeks before the audition, we had to learn the

song Close Every Door To Me, and we had to sing one line from the song. I was nervous.”

Ava Schmalz Hodgson says rehearsals were quick, only lasting four days.

“My first rehearsal was on Thursday and my last rehearsal was on Sunday and the first show was on

Wednesday,” she said.

The show starts in Canaan where Joseph’s brothers are jealous that he is their father Jacob’s favourite, and when Jacob gives Joseph a colourful, well-tailored coat, their jealousy becomes too much.

From there, Joseph is sold into slavery and works his way up through society, and it is only an adventure from there.

The Children’s Chorus is featured on nearly all of

the 18 songs in the show, singing alongside the main characters and the show’s narrator.

Schmalz has some theatre experience working with the Elmira Community Theatre in Sleepy Hollow and Wizard of Oz at the River Run Centre in Guelph, but for both girls, this is the first time they have ever done a show of this magnitude.

“It was really exciting because I have never been in a professional play before,” said Hodgson. “I like the song called Benjamin’s Calypso.”

“I have been in two plays before,” added Schmalz, “But, this one is professional theatre. The other ones were community theatre.”

They were both looking forward to opening night on May 17, encouraging everyone to come and see the two Elmirans on stage in Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.

“I am excited to just see everyone with their costumes on and with all the props ready” said Schmalz.

“I am excited to see the audience too.”

Hodgson says it is a great show, and audiences are going to love it “It is a really, really good play. I have watched it through from backstage and stuff. The cast is really close, everyone is like family,” she said. “It really brings the play together and it is just really cool.”

Jamie McKight will be playing the role of Joseph, with Wayne Berwick as Jacob. Danielle Wade will be singing the part of the Narrator.

Kathy Duncan is retiring as branch manager of the Elmira Bank of Montreal after 25 years with the company. The branch is hosting an open house on May 25 for Duncan.

LIZ BEVAN AFTER 25 YEARS WITH the Bank of Montreal, and nine years at the Elmira branch, manager Kathy Duncan is embarking on a new phase in her life.

She will be retiring as branch manager at the end of May, and the bank is inviting the community to come and share in her celebration next week with an open house on May 25.

“I think it will bring back

memories, it will help me to say thank you for all of the years that people have been a part of my life. I am just looking forward to reconnecting and saying thank you,” she said from her office at the Elmira BMO branch.

She lives in Conestogo, so she won’t be too far away, but there are still plenty of things she will miss when she no longer has to go to work in Elmira.

“There are a lot of things

I am going to miss, but I would say the staff, for sure. A lot of them have a lot of tenure and they tend to stay here and build something,” she said. “The customers are amazing.

It is just such a wonderful community. I live in Conestogo, so I am part of the community, so I’ll still be a part of the community.

I won’t be off in Kitchener somewhere. The customers are great.”

special connection to the customers and the staff she works so closely with.

“We are very connected to our customers because we live in the community.

Things that happen to them, we feel the impact so strongly and it is just about being a good citizen, and be there in each other’s lives,” she shared.

“I have had a tragedy in my life where the people in this branch and the community just pulled

together and I just felt so supported and loved. You just want to give that back to people.”

The branch has been involved in many different charitable programs, including participating in the Kate’s Kause playground project, and donating sledges to the Woolwich Thrashers sledge hockey team for those with physical disabilities.

SPRING IS FINALLY KICKING into to gear, and the store is definitely showing signs of the season. The local rhubarb and asparagus are fresh from the market.

In our garden, the asparagus I planted last year are poking up above the soil now. It’ll be tender and crisp, just the way it should be – if only there was more of it! It does make a nice addition to one of the favourite breakfast menu items in our house, the humble omelette. It’s quick, simple and delish!

As chef you know that there are criteria for a good omelette: local free range eggs are a must, as are fresh vegetables, seasoning and a nice pan.

Q. If every penny counts, how many of them could you drop into a wine glass filled to the brim with water before spillage occurs?

A. Most people will say a

coin or two, but amazingly you can drop in at least 10 pennies without spilling a drop, points out Richard Wiseman in his book â&#x20AC;&#x153;101 Bets You Will Always Win.â&#x20AC;?

The secret here is that the water molecules cling firmly togetherâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;known as surface tension. The droppedin pennies merely stretch out the surface of the water as it rises and forms a dome

along the rim. But add too many pennies and the surface tension wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be strong enough to hold, so the water overflows.

But notice that if you add detergent to the water, the surface tension will be much lower and far fewer pennies can be put in the glass before spillage takes place.

As for her retirement, Duncan has already made some plans, spending time with family and doing outreach work, but she still isn’t sure what she is going to do with all of her spare time.

“The day after I retire though, we are going on a mini mission trip for a week to Omaha, Nebraska.

We are just going to be doing some work with the Aboriginal community there doing a vacation bible school. We leave the next day. It is for about ten days and I am going with my daughter, so I am really

excited about that. She just finished college, so it is perfect timing. Then, when I get back, I won’t have to worry about coming back to work,” she said, adding that there are a few things she hasn’t had the time for while working. “I love gardening and I have just never had enough time to dig in, or really get the garden the way I like to have them.

I am really looking forward to that. I mostly plant flowers, but maybe that I have more time now, I will get some vegetables.”

The open house will take place at the Elmira BMO branch on May 25, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Springy Egg Omelette 3 fresh large eggs 1/4 cup cream 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil Salt and pepper to season 3 stalks of blanched asparagus 3 Tbsp. goat cheese 3 cherry tomatoes, sliced in half 1 tsp. of chopped chives Salt and pepper to taste

In a bowl, whisk together eggs and cream, season with salt and pepper.

Preheat a pan until hot, then add vegetable oil. You know the pan is hot enough when there are ripples in the oil. If the pan is smoking, it is too hot.

Add the whipped eggs,

stir the eggs around with a rubber spatula until they begin to cook through.

Turn heat down to low.

Do not allow the eggs to brown. You want them to just cook through.

If you are able to flip the egg mix, do so.

Place the asparagus, cherry tomato and goat cheese on top of the egg and sprinkle on the chives and salt and pepper. Put a lid on top, turn off the burner and let the eggs finish cooking .

Fold the omelette in half and slide onto a plate.

The sale starts off on May 26 at 5 p.m. with quilt auction seat sales and at 5:30 p.m., the quilt preview opens, with the plant and flower tent, the food vendors and the craft tent open as well. At 6 p.m., there is a barbecue dinner and at 7 p.m., the indoor auction and silent auction begin.

On May 27, the events start up at 6:45 a.m. with registration for the Run 4 Relief. At 7 a.m. the pancake breakfast will be served, and the tents will be open.

The quilt auction opens at 8:30 a.m. and at 10 a.m., the outdoor auction starts, with patio furniture, sporting goods, hardware and more for sale. At 11 a.m. the children’s auction begins.

“It is a fun day. A great day to be exposed to your broader community with a huge range of people from the Mennonite community, those who are selling papusas and spring rolls and there is a real range of food that people don’t always associate with the classic Mennonite offerings,” said Cober Bauman. “This is a festival-like day, but you can be sure that it has been run very leanly so that proceeds are all channeled to our relief, peace building and resource development work, with a specific focus on responding to hunger issues.”
