Provincial Minister of Infrastructure Monte McNaughton was joined by area Conservative MPPs and Wellesley council members for the November 8 ceremony at Bridge 26, located on Nafziger Road, north of Henry Street.

“It’s amazing to see when communities come together to do projects like this,” said McNaughton. “It really takes everyone, from the staff to contractors, to council, to the people living here to get projects like this done.”

Originally estimated to cost $1.2 million, the project eventually came in under budget at $900,000,

with the Ministry of Infrastructure providing $400,000. The new bridge completely replaces the original structure built around 1932. The new span is expected to last a minimum of 75 years.

“This is money well spent,” said McNaughton.

“This is an important step in opening Ontario for business; important infrastructure that connects communities and allows products to get to market.”

The bridge was the sole access for 18 homes, Wellesley Brand Apple Products, a farm operation and an active cemetery. A walking bridge and a temporary bypass bridge were both installed during construction to accommodate those affected by the bridge closure.

Volunteers out Saturday, going door-to-door in the townships for WCS food drive FAISAL ALI IF THE SNOWFALL WE’VE seen in the past week isn’t enough, the large group of volunteers taking part in this weekend’s food drive should remind you that the Christmas season is here – and that it’s the season of giving.

On Saturday, the Kiwanis Club of Elmira, along with a significant number of service clubs and volunteers across the townships, will be asking residents to lend support to the annual Christmas Goodwill food drive.

Run each year to support the Woolwich Community Services food bank over the winter season, the drive brings tens of thousands of pounds of food and supplies from across the Woolwich and northern half of Wellesley townships for those in need. This year’s drive is set for Saturday (November 17), and the Kiwanis Club is asking people to support the cause.

“They don’t have to come out,” points out Jim Stewart, Kiwanis member and past president.

“Everybody, if they could just give a little bit of non-

perishable food to the food drive. ... We canvas such a large area and a number of homes that a little bit from a lot of people turns out to be a tremendous amount of food for a lot of families.

“That’s the key to it,” he added. “It’s door-to-door, and that I’ve always felt was the most effective way, if you can, to run a food drive.”

Flyers were dropped off at eligible homes ahead of time, and this Saturday, volunteers will be going door-to-door to pick up FOOD DRIVE | 4

Still operating, Elmira’s library one of 125 built in Canada with Carnegie grants VERONICA REINER PART-TIME PHILANTHROPIST, FULLTIME ROBBER baron, Andrew Carnegie lived in a world far removed from Elmira, but there’s a little piece of him to be found there to this very day: just look up over the door when heading into the library.

Born into workingclass family in Scotland in 1835, Carnegie would go on to make a fortune in the U.S. steel industry through monopolistic tactics, corruption, and union-busting typical of the oligarchs of his day.

He’s remembered these days for this philanthropy in later years, most notably for funding libraries, which

he believed were the key to public education – he refused workers’ requests for raises, arguing they were better off with public libraries, for instance.

In his lifetime, Andrew Carnegie donated $56 million to build 2,509 libraries throughout the world. A typical Carnegie grant was about $10,000 – approximately $650,000 in today’s dollars. These funds contributed significantly to the development of small communities around the world, providing much needed services, as well as many spectacular buildings for which many towns and cities are known. Of the 125 Carnegie libraries in Canada, 111

were built in Ontario. In total, Andrew Carnegie spent $2,556,600 on the construction of libraries in Canada.

Though he had plenty of money to share in later years, his life didn’t start that way. Carnegie’s was a real rags-to-riches tale.

“He grew up in Scotland and into poverty,” explained Susan Burke, education coordinator for the Waterloo North branch of Architectural Conservancy Ontario (ACO). “His father was a linen weaver, and they were all doing it by hand at that point. Things started to go downhill; they didn’t seem to have any future there, so they rolled the dice and emigrated to the

States. Carnegie was put to work. He was a bobbin boy in the linen trade.”

He went on to become a telegrapher and later invested in bridges, railroads and oil derricks.

However, his real fortune was acquired through his co-founding of a steel business, appropriately titled Carnegie Steel Company, in Pittsburgh.

A combination of low wages, efficient organization and technological infrastructure contributed to a massive profit for the business. Carnegie later sold the company to J.P Morgan for $303,450,000 in 1901, making him the CARNEGIE | 6

THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS ARE generally thought of as a cheery time to celebrate family and exchange presents or sentiments. But for some, these months can be a painful reminder of loved ones they have lost. That’s where the educational session Anything But Merry comes in.

The session will be hosted this month for the first time in Elmira by the Bereaved Families of Ontario – Midwestern Region (BFO-MR) in conjunction with Woolwich Community Services. The group’s executive director, Jaime Bickerton, said this time of year can be incredibly tough for those who are grieving.

“The loss can feel more pronounced,” said Bickerton. “It can be an overwhelming time of emotions and unrealistic expectations that can make this time of year extremely difficult to manage.”

The hour-long session gives tips that attendees can take home with them to make dealing with the loss a little bit easier to manage. The advice includes setting boundaries for oneself so that they are not taking on more than is manageable. For example, setting up an escape plan for family gatherings or holiday events they are attending just in case the event starts to feel overwhelming.

“A big one is just being okay with letting go of some of the traditions that you may have participated

in, in the past,” explained Bickerton. “Recognizing that – especially if it’s the first Christmas after a death – that it’s going to be a little bit different, and that’s okay. And another one is around creating new traditions too, specifically around remembering your loved one who has died.”

Bickerton noted that the purpose of the sessions is more education-based, rather than specifically a support group. That said, attendees are welcome to share their stories and challenges.

Anything But Merry is not only new for the Elmira location but to a variety of other areas this year as well. The group expanded the reach of this event in response to demand.

“We usually would see anywhere between 10 and 20 people attend in previous years,” said Bickerton. “So for us, that really demonstrates that it’s a need. It’s something that people are looking for. So we were happy to be able to host it in more communities.”

There will also be sessions hosted in Cambridge, Waterloo, Guelph and Fergus, with volunteers delivering the presentations.

Woolwich Community Services partners with other mental health associations to offer up their meeting rooms when needed.

“It was a collaborative effort involving many individuals and organizations,” said Nowak.

“Bridge 26 was initially a narrow two-lane concrete structure. Now the bridge is wide enough to accommodate two-way vehicular traffic and pedestrian travel.”

The project had its origins in a 2014 bridge inspection that identified that the Nafziger Bridge needed to be replaced within one to five years.

Another inspection in 2016 confirmed that there were significant structural problems with the bridge, including abutments that

The new bridge completely replaced a structure built about 1932. were on the verge of failure. There were also no sidewalks, and it did not adequately allow for twoway traffic.

In studying the bridge, officials determined that the best course of action would be the complete removal of the existing span and abutments with the replacement of a new rigid-framed concrete structure.

Township staff worked with other agencies, including the Grand River Conservation Authority and the federal Depart-

ment of Fisheries and Oceans, to move forward with the construction.

Staff also reviewed a cultural heritage evaluation report of the bridge and found no significant parts of the bridge needed to be replicated. After a public consultation meeting, the final design for the project was decided.

Construction got underway in mid-July, at which point the Wellesley pond was drained to allow the work to be done. Despite a three-week weather delay, the bridge was finished in

October.

“Staff continued to work diligently with community organizations like the Apple Butter and Cheese Festival so that the impact of the project did not significantly disrupt the scheduled events,” said Nowak.

“August was obviously pretty rainy so that delayed it by a little bit, but this project is on time and under budget,” said McNaughton. “That’s good news for the community here and for taxpayers across Ontario.”

This year, the Kiwanis Club hopes to collect 20,000 lbs of food and donations, in line with last year’s haul. Though run under the Kiwanis banner, the effort will see the participation of 200 volunteers, and involve the support of groups like the EDSS First Robotics Team, the St. Jacobs Lions and the Breslau Air Cadets.

It’s a huge difference from where the food drive was 17 years ago, which started off as a smaller effort within just the town of Elmira.

“It’s gone right through the whole township,” said Stewart, of the food drive.

Food and supplies collected will go towards the WCS Christmas Goodwill hamper program, which provides holiday essentials to low-income residents in the community.

“We also ask, if possible, that when they’re grabbing stuff from their cupboards, due to the large scope of how much food we get and our tight timeline of pulling together all these hampers, checking the expiry dates on items would greatly appreciated,” said Tina Reed, coordinator of community supports at the WCS. “Because we can’t do that at all beforehand. So that saves people having to open their Christmas hampers and have to throw out things.”

“Please check those doggone little dates – you know how small they are,” added Stewart.

The food drive will begin Saturday at 9 a.m., and run over the course of the day.

More crossing guards for safety Speeding, inattentive drivers have prompted Woolwich to add a second crossing guard at two school zones in the township.

Council last week approved plans for the additions at Conestogo Public School and Elmira’s John Mahood PS based on staff’s concerns about the safety of children crossing to the schools.

“Sometimes a change in traffic patterns, student volume, school crossing design or an increase in driver error makes it difficult and dangerous for

one crossing guard to handle a school crossing on their own,” said clerk Val Hummel in a report to councillors.

At Conestogo PS, a new traffic island installed by the Region of Waterloo as part of the reconstruction of Sawmill Road has proven to be a hazard. The pedestrian refuge essentially cuts the crossing into two segments, with drivers often failing to heed the guard’s signals, she explained.

“Crossing guards at the Conestogo school crossing have historically reported regular conflicts with traffic due to drivers not obeying the directions of the guard. However, it was manageable until a pedestrian refuge island was

installed at the school crossing in 2017.”

The township has asked the region to remove the pedestrian island.

At John Mahood, traffic volumes and speeding on First Street are the issue.

“Historically, the crossing guard serving this location has reported frequent incidents where motorists do not stop at the intersection or slowly roll through it.

This location requires extreme vigilance due to the high vehicle volumes and types of vehicles, and it has reached the point where one crossing guard is no longer sufficient.”

The additional guards, who work one hour per day split into 30-minute shifts, are expected to cost the township

$2,400 for the remainder of this year and $5,000 in the 2019 budget.

“It’s driver behaviour – we cannot correct it. It’s way too big of a problem,” said Hummel of the root cause of the safety moves.

Woolwich OKs ombuds service Having first signed on to a regional ombudsman service in 2016, Woolwich has extended the contract by another two years.

The Waterloo Area Municipal Ombuds Office began operation on Sept. 1, 2016 and provides service to the region, the

cities of Cambridge and Waterloo and the townships Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich.

Meeting last week, councillors agreed to extend the contract with Agree Inc. through to May 31, 2020.

Since the service first began, the township has received six applicable inquiries or complaints. Three were handled in the early resolution stage, while three went to the ombudsman.

Fees for services under the agreement will increase the intake and early resolution consultant to $94.32 per hour from $90 and the conflict management professional/ ombudsman services to $288.20 per

hour from $275.

To date, the township has spent about $5,000 on the service.

Finding a home A campaign to end chronic homelessness in the region kicks off today (Nov. 15) as part of National Housing Day celebrations.

The ALL IN 2020 campaign to find homes for people who have been homeless the longest and have the most complex needs is a joint partnership between Wellbeing Waterloo Region and the Homelessness Housing Umbrella Group (HHUG).

‘Tis the season ... for collisions on the road; check conditions THOUGH STILL FALL, WINTRY weather has already made an appearance, bringing icy roads with it. With that in mind, police officials are reminding drivers that a change of driving habits is in order, as collisions are likely to increase.

More than 50 per cent of collisions occur on the straight sections of open road. This means that you are more likely to get in a crash at a non-intersection, implying that the crash does not require a second vehicle. In such cases, the blame on a single-vehicle crash most often lies with the driver, police say.

Wild and domestic animals, inattentive/ distracted drivers and excessive speeds are the three leading causes of collisions. Along with failing to yield right-ofway, following too closely and losing control receive honourable mention. Most reportable-collisions are credited to one of those six causes and all but one put the blame squarely on a driver.

It would be fair to say that winter driving is a perishable skill given that November sees the most vehicle collisions followed by a steady decrease until spring. The spike in crashes in June follows a similar pattern in that it marks a drastic change in season and a drastic change in driving habits.

Police see a correlation between an increased number of collisions and a transition period, going from a weekday mindset to a weekend mindset and viceversa.

Collisions most notably increase toward 5 p.m. with a second smaller increase occurring around and at 8 a.m. These numbers align proportionally with traffic volumes and daylight hours, where commuter traffic and the dusk/dawn being the most obvious contributor.

Conversely, 3 a.m. and the early hours of the morning see very few crashes, showing the connection between traffic volumes and collisions numbers.

More than 70 per cent of reported collisions occur on clear days with very few occurring during freezing rain, drifting snow and fog. While this may seem contrary to popular belief, during extreme weather events drivers will typically drive slower therefore damages in crashes will be less and anything below $2,000 in damages is nonreportable. Conversely, the high speeds driven on clear days and the overconfidence of good visibility and control will see clear-day collisions amount to greater damages.

6:00 PM | Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a fatal collision involving a single vehicle on Wellington Road 18, near Lake Belwood. Police report that a driver exited his vehicle on the side of the road and was attempting to cross the highway when he was struck by a passing motorist. OPP, Centre Wellington Fire Rescue and Guelph Wellington Paramedics responded to the scene. A 78-year-old Stoney Creek man was transported to local hospital with life-threatening injuries but was pronounced dead by hospital medical staff. The cause of the collision is currently being investigated by OPP Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) and the roadway will remain closed until further notice. The Wellington County OPP ask anyone that may have witnessed this collision to call 1-888-310-1122.

4:00 PM | Waterloo Regional Police, in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, conducted a joint initiative related to deer hunting in Ontario. Spot check areas were set up throughout the region and several hunters checked to ensure compliance. As a result of the effort, two men were charged with hunting related offences at a Woolwich location near Line 86 and Halm Road. Officials remind hunters to educate themselves on provincial laws and regulations prior to participating in a hunt.

This week, in fact, the charitable organization is making its annual push for gift-filled shoeboxes that will soon be shipped off to points around the globe in an effort to spread holiday cheer.

“The idea is to bring a special Christmas present to children in these na-

tions that may have never received anything like that before,” said local organizer Gail Martin.

The campaign collects various items such as hygiene products, school supplies, and small toys that are put in a shoebox parcel. The box is then sent overseas to youngsters in developing nations. November 12-18 is go-time, says Martin, noting the kids who receive the parcels often live in war zones or in poor conditions such that they would not otherwise have the chance to get a gift.

wealthiest American for the next few years.

He certainly wasn’t totally selfish with his funds, however, dedicating the next 18 years of his life towards philanthropic works, with a particular focus on education. His motto: “A man who dies rich dies disgraced.”

“When he made all this money, he turned to how he could help other people,” said Burke. “He felt as if anybody who was personally rich had an obligation to distribute wealth to the improvement of mankind.”

The “Andrew Carnegie Dictum” was straightforward, separating life into three distinct sections: spend the first third of one’s life gaining as much education as possible, followed by the second third of your life making as much money as possible. The final third was to be spent giving it all towards worthwhile causes. His massive contribution towards public libraries certainly helped with the first third of his dictum.

Eight Carnegie libraries were built in the Waterloo Region, with three still functioning currently as libraries – Elmira, New Hamburg, and Hespeler.

Now part of the Region of Waterloo Library system, the Elmira building opened in 1913 after receiving a $7,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation.

Though not as grandiose as some, the Elmira building bears the hallmarks of the classic architectural style Carnegie promoted along with the functionality of “open stacks” that allowed the public to browse through the books themselves rather than keeping the books out of reach, accessible only through the librarians.

His approach had a tremendous impact not just on libraries but on the communities themselves.

His legacy was the subject of a free lecture last week in Kitchener sponsored by the ACO. Erin Smith, a heritage planner with the

city of Brampton, spoke about the ways the libraries have been retrofitted, their unique design, and the broader timeline of architecture and library development. She focussed particularly on the entire period of Carnegie’s grant program from 1903-1923.

She says that before the Carnegie libraries were constructed around the beginning of the 20th century, there was no set precedent for what a library should look like or how it should work.

“Ontario libraries before really lacked the physical structure,” said Smith.

“Earlier there were just libraries in people’s homes, or in existing businesses or other buildings that were already in the city.

There were personal library collections. After that, there became mechanical institutes and provided more access to more people, but they were simply put wherever they could find space.

For example, the one in Waterloo was the town hall.

“It was a transition in establishing a new physical structure for the library. So offering a model answering how a library should look and how it should function. Previous to that, there wasn’t a consensus as to what they should look like and how they should operate.”

The libraries were inspired by beautiful beaux-arts architecture, which drew on principles of French neoclassicism but also incorporated Renaissance and Gothic elements. The structures also included modern materials such as iron and glass.

“It was taught in Paris at the school of BeauxArts,” explained Burke.

“So they’re very much reflecting back on the classical period. They made a big deal of the entry, so usually, there was a very handsome doorway. Steps leading up to the doorway, and then pillars or plasters around the entry and that triangular piece that looks like it’s being held up by the columns that turn it into a little house

of worship. Frequently, the name Carnegie is on it somewhere. His name is quite familiar to people – people that go to libraries.”

Smith, who previously hosted a lecture on Carnegie libraries for Doors Open Waterloo Region, notes that generally it’s the older generation that is more familiar with the work of Carnegie.

“I find it interesting because when I speak to my friends about it – many of them are in their twenties, they might remember Carnegie libraries, but they’re also of the age where they were probably going to the mid20th-century buildings, including the Waterloo Public Library and Kitchener Public Library.

“The older crowd knows more about it. The younger group is definitely interested in learning more, but they don’t necessarily know who Carnegie was.”

Though examples of Carnegie libraries still exist, some have been repurposed for other uses or even demolished.

Among the latter group was the region’s grandest example, the Berlin library, which was demolished in 1962 after being replaced by the much less captivating building now home to the main branch

of the Kitchener Public Library.

“In the mid-20th century, there were these paradigm shifts in architecture when we really wanted to demolish what was old and create a new structure,” explained Smith. “So there was this push for massive library structures we saw in Waterloo – the Waterloo Public Library, and the Kitchener Public Library.

“So they were built in that time period when we were shifting away from the Carnegie library. That’s when a lot of them were demolished; that’s when

Such losses help make the surviving Carnegie libraries of greater historical significance.

“I think the reason behind the fact that many of them are still existing, they remind us of our community’s commitment to having public access to information,” said Smith.

“The buildings themselves do an outstanding job of reflecting what our early 20th century notions of what a library form and function were. So I think

that they have an impact on us, whether we directly interact with them or not.”

The Elmira location at 65 Arthur St. South was officially opened on Dec. 26, 1913.

“In September 1904, a committee was appointed to circulate a petition asking the Village of Elmira to assume responsibility for the Elmira Public Library, which was operated by the former Elmira Mechanics’ Institute Board,” said Charlotte Woodley, a Region of Waterloo archivist.

“In the face of declining revenues, this was the obvious step to take, as provincial legislation provided a municipal levy to support a library.

The village approved of this by a vote of 100-64.

Elmira council passed bylaw 181 on Jan. 17, 1905, ‘establishing a Public Library in the Village of Elmira.’ The library was handed over to the village with a deficit of $53.”

By 1910, the library had grown too large for the two rooms it rented. It was at that point the Elmira Public Library submitted a request to Andrew Carnegie for a grant to build a new facility.

He first offered them $5,000 in response; however, the experienced architect W.A. Mahoney strongly advised that the board apply to Carnegie for a more substantial grant. Subsequently, they received a letter from Carnegie offering $7,000.

“In September 1912, Mahoney provided the Elmira Public Library Board with a set of plans for the proposed building, and a copy of the specifications,” said Woodley. “He was so confident that Carnegie would approve the plans with few or no changes that he urged the board to call for tenders at once.

In January 1913, Emanuel Martin was awarded the contract for the library building at the cost of $6,000.”

Construction of the building began in the spring of 1913, and the fruits of that labour are still enjoyed today.

It’s a project that has been run by numerous organizations throughout the country, with the local Lions taking on the challenge this year.

“We are collecting socks, warm new and gently used socks, but we will take mitts and hats. Anything to keep them warm. And we are donating them to oneRoof,” explained Walker.

The donations will go towards oneRoof, a Kitchener-based organization with a focus on supporting homeless and at-risk youth in the Waterloo Region, typically between the ages of 12 and 25.

“For us, it’s fantastic.

Our agency relies quite heavily on community donations,” said Sandy Dietrich-Bell, CEO for oneRoof in Kitchener.

“We don’t receive federal or provincial funding, so when a group steps up and donates to us – whether it be hats and mitts, or socks, or hygiene products, anything like that – it certainly helps our bottom line and enables us to

The organization offers clothing at its drop-in location, as well as meals, showers, laundry facilities and hygiene products to those in need. More advanced services, like health care and mental health services are also offered at select times.

“So we’re always looking for clothing that’s suitable to that age range (12-25), and certainly with the winter months approaching, hats and mitts and socks go a long way in helping to keep folks warm,” Dietrich-Bell added.

“Our club has taken on this for November as our service project. One of the most needed items, but least donated, for the homeless are socks,” said Walker. “If your feet are warm, then the rest of you

stays warm. Put some socks and a hat on, and you’re a little bit warmer. Keep the body heat in.”

This will be the first Toasty Toes campaign the Woolwich Lions have run, notes Walker.

“We’re always looking for new service projects, something you haven’t done over and over again.

And we had seen another Lions Club was collecting socks, so I had to check that: ‘Oh what are you doing with the socks? Oh that sounds like a great idea for our own area!’ And here we go, getting socks.

And mitts and hats.”

Donations can be made at Lions Hall in Elmira, 40 South St. W., on November 26 between 6 and 8:30 p.m. The public can also drop of donations at the Window Box flower store in downtown Elmira (8 Arthur St. S.) during regular business hours.

The final day to donate is November 26.

Amazon deal a warning about corporate welfare ANY ILLUSION THAT ONLINE retail giant Amazon would build a second headquarters (dubbed HQ2) in Toronto – or anywhere in Canada, for that matter – was surely shattered this week when it was revealed the chosen locations will fork out at least US$2 billion in direct subsidies to the company.

New York state will provided $1.525 billion in direct incentives to Amazon, one of the biggest and most profitable companies on the planet, to abet the gentrification of a New York City neighbourhood in exchange for 25,000 jobs. Likewise, Virginia offered up $573 million for the same promise of 25,000 jobs in the area of Washington, D.C. Canadian locations have neither the cash nor the legal latitude for that kind wasteful corporate welfare. Still, that didn’t stop many from getting into the bidding war – essentially a race to the bottom – to entice Amazon to choose them as the Seattle-based company sought a spot for a second headquarters.

If pretty much every case of corporate welfare is any example, the benefits will be few and the “incidental” harm – critics in the two “winning” communities are already decrying the potential destruction of working-class neighbourhoods and potential housing shortages, for instance – will be much more than claimed.

But if political life is a perpetual election cycle, the one thing politicians relish is the doling out money – grants, loans, subsidies – and the photo ops that accompany such announcements.

The history of corporate welfare is replete with unpaid loans, bankruptcies, undelivered jobs and shuttered factories despite assurances to the contrary.

Given that all levels of government and a variety of ministries and departments are involved, it’s hard to get a handle on just how much money is doled out as corporate welfare. It’s made worse by the fact that officials try to hide what they’re doing: what we do know almost always comes through Access to Information requests. Documents redacted as a matter of course, with the transfer of your money to wealthy corporations treated in the same way as military secrets.

Still, some estimates put the national corporate welfare bill at some $16 billion a year, or almost double the cost of social welfare costs. And without any documentable benefits.

What would perhaps make the corporate welfare payments more palatable is a realistic cost-benefit analysis: if an investment makes sense – i.e. pays back every dollar to the taxpayers directly, and then some – then it should be considered. If not, then take a pass. That applies to everything from massive, decades-long support for the likes of Bombardier and Pratt and Whitney to ersatz economic development efforts in Woolwich and the region. In almost every case, the decisions are bad ones, which, as we know, is pretty much business as usual for politicians and bureaucrats Political gain and an eagerness to channel public money into private hands aside – and that’s a big cultural change to reverse, as milking taxpayers is the norm – ending corporate welfare wouldn’t be that difficult.

Broader research tells us the any benefits of corporate welfare are, at best, fleeting and rarely successful in attracting high-skilled, high-paying jobs. The money disappears down a sinkhole, with little lasting effect. But as long as politicians are allowed to control the money, they’ll keep on wasting it to benefit only themselves and a few well-heeled friends.

What went wrong in Eastern Europe?

WORLD AFFAIRS I FIRST MET VIKTOR Orban, the not-quite-dictator of Hungary, in 1989 in Budapest – and the man who introduced us was none other than George Soros.

Orban was then a firebrand student leader, antiCommunist and keen for Hungary to join the West.

Soros, a Hungarian refugee who became an American billionaire, was devoting his time and money to finding and subsiding young Eastern Europeans who would lead their countries into the European Union and a liberal democratic future.

But Orban is now the prime minister of an ‘illiberal’ Hungarian government that controls the mass media and regards the EU as the enemy. In last April’s election, he portrayed Soros as the Jewish evil genius who, with the EU’s help, was planning to flood Hungary with Muslim refugees and destroy the country’s culture and identity.

That’s ridiculous, but Orban won almost half the votes and more than twothirds of the seats in parliament. Poland, a far bigger country, now also has a farright, ‘illiberal’ government that is ultra-nationalist and hostile to the EU (although both countries depend heavily on EU subsidies).

The extremists are not yet in power in other Eastern European countries, but similar trends are visible in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania.

The dreams and hopes that drove the anti-Communist revolutions of 1989 are not yet dead, but they are definitely fading. What went wrong?

These countries are among the most ethnically homogenous in the world (due to the Holocaust and the widespread ‘ethnic cleansing’ that followed both world wars). They have admitted almost no refugees, yet their politics is dominated by the fear of being swamped by them.

It’s beyond bizarre, but Bulgarian political philosopher Ivan Krastev has a persuasive explanation for it. He points out that the question “isn’t so much

where the nationalism has come from, but where it’s been hiding all these years.” His answer is that it was hiding in plain sight.

During the 1970s and 1980s the nationalists who wanted independence from Soviet rule formed a close alliance with the pro-Western activists who wanted a liberal, democratic future.

From Poland to Bulgaria the liberals and the nationalists worked together, and even after the overthrow of the Communists in 1989 they continued to believe (or at least hope) that democracy could accommodate them both.

Maybe it could have, but the nationalist wars that destroyed the former Yugoslav federation in the 1990s put an end to the partnership. As Krastev says, the violence there persuaded liberals that “nationalism was the very heart of darkness, and that flirting with it could only be sinful.”

So the liberals broke their alliances with the nationalists, and for a while the nationalists went very quiet. Nobody, not even Polish or Hungarian nationalists, wanted to be seen in the same light as

monsters like Serbia’s Slobodan Milosevic.

But nationalism was the most powerful political force in Eastern Europe throughout the 20th century, and it wasn’t going to just fade away. It reemerged in the early 21st century, shorn of its liberal associations with tolerance and diversity, as a major political force in the region – and the driver behind it was what Krastev calls “demographic panic.”

After 1989 many people in Eastern Europe not only aspired to emulate the prosperous liberal democracies of Western Europe, they actually wanted to live in them, and when their countries joined the EU they acquired the right to free movement. If Poles thought that life would be better in England, for example, they could just move there and find work – and a million of them did.

Since 1989, 27 per cent of Latvia’s population has emigrated to Western Europe, and Bulgaria has lost 21 per cent. Hungary is not so hard hit, but it has lost three per cent of its popuDYER | 10

Ever has it been so, but perhaps never as openly divisive as we’re seeing today, in large part due to technology that makes rifts more visible.

Just as nationalism and patriotism have been debased beyond what those words meant in the war years we just marked with Remembrance Day, tribalism has become increasingly prevalent in our societal divisions.

Where nationalism could once be seen as a collective “us,” it’s now more closely associated with the demonizing of “them,” such as in cases of ethnic groups – white nationalism being a prime example just now.

Patriotism was long ago adopted by militaristic scoundrels, and is used by the worst kinds of authoritarians to stifle dissent.

Tribalism has become more complicated in a

digital world where we can go beyond geographic boundaries to identify with groups from the ordinary – cat fanciers, for instance – to the worse kind of racism and bigotry.

If as individuals we feel we have more in common with likeminded people and choose to silo ourselves with our preferred groups, that’s increasingly manageable in a depersonalized world. That becomes a problem when we start tuning out others who aren’t “us” in favour of maintaining our own version of reality.

That doesn’t require the extremes of, say, neoNazis to be a problem, however.

Our focus on self – an issue that goes beyond traditional notions of individualism – has seen us become one more intent on self-esteem and selfimage over a collectivist sense of ourselves as part of a societal whole.

This manifests in forms as commonplace as endless selfies – narcissism being normalized – to movements that look to stifle debate in the name

ments, including advances in civil rights, women’s liberation, the sexual revolution and anti-war protests. In the following decade came more focus on self-actualization and the self-help movement it spawned, leading to a departure from the previous generations’ loyalty to institutions such as the church and government.

In the course of a couple of generations, we’ve undone centuries of efforts to create a society based on the common good. Much of the we’reall-in-this-together ideals that came out of the Great Depression and the Second World War, for instance, has been replaced by relentless individualism.

Rapid urbanization whereby we no longer rely on family, friends and the broader community – indeed, we may not even know our neighbours – makes us forget just how interdependent we really are. A consumer-based society, pushed by marketing, focuses on individual pleasure. This comes at a cost to the collective ‘us,’

especially when discussing matters of financing the common good: taxes are seen as taking money away from ‘my’ enjoyment. Increasingly, we’re encouraged to give rein to our natural tendency to look after number one.

Couple that with an individual’s capacity to seek immediate gratification, and long-term planning for our collective future becomes even more difficult.

Our self-absorption and distance from traditional forms of community – nationalism in the shared values sense – makes it easier for others to use nationalism in the ethnic or racial form as a way to gain power and influence.

It’s what’s happening with the massively dysfunctional U.S. system, but also the formula at play in Russia, China, Hungary and Poland, among other countries with authoritarian/neo-fascist movements.

The worst-of-humanity kind of nationalism gave us both the First World War and the second, as leaders not named Trump

attempted to convey at ceremonies in France marking the 100th anniversary of the armistice.

It’s the kind that’s creeping into politics, as a certain base kind of populace is courted by those seeking to gain or hold onto power.

Many of us are oblivious to such machinations, focussed on our own lives and/or blinded by wilful partisanship/ignorance.

We’re easily distracted by bread and circuses, especially those that feed into our own interests and biases. It’s all about shortterm gratification.

To alter our current path, we’ll need some longer-term, biggerpicture thinking – i.e. just the opposite of what the propaganda model feeds us today. Such thinking is not just for issues such as climate change, though we’re not prepared to tackle even that issue, despite the consequences.

No, it’s all about living for today. But long-term planning is crucial for a host of issues clearly KANNON | 10

of protecting snowflakes from becoming butthurt by world views that don’t match their own, in the parlance of such discussions. At the extremes, our sense of self and efforts to craft our own reality lead to the villainization of others – the “them” in the equation.

That kind of binary thinking is dangerous, but perhaps an inevitable result of what began with the Boomers of the Me Generation – though an icon of 1960s, JFK’s message of “Ask not what your country can do for you ...” was already something of an anachronism rolling into the next decade.

The look-at-me aspect of social media is blamed largely on the millennial generation (those born roughly between 1980 and 2000), but the technology has in many ways simply indulged the indulgence that goes back to the Baby Boomers.

That group wrote the book on self-indulgence, though it was more along the lines of cultural shifts.

As housing prices have grown, the rate of home ownership, or the share of households that own the home in which they live (67.8% in 2016), remains near where it was before the 2008 financial crisis (68.4% in 2006). However, this drop is more pronounced given that the home ownership rate had been climbing steadily from around 60% in 1971 to 69% in 2011.

lation to Western Europe in the past ten years – and almost all the emigrants are young, leaving behind an aging population with a low birth rate.

This is the real source of the demographic panic, but it finds its political expression in a paranoid fear that the country’s dwindling population will be overrun by immigrants with a radically different culture, particularly refugees. It doesn’t matter that there are virtually no immigrants in Hungary, and that it’s about the last place a refugee would want to go.

In these matters, perception is all.

The anti-immigrant hysteria is almost universal in Eastern Europe, and it will bring more illiberal nationalist regimes to power before it is finished.

The remedy, if there is one, is for the liberals to acknowledge the nationalists’ concerns and rebuild the old alliances with them without pandering to the panic.

That’s not easy to do, but it’s what every Western European democracy has actually been doing for generations. Although they’re not doing too well with it at the moment themselves.

part of today’s political reality, encompassing all levels: long-term resource consumption, human migration, transportation demands, retirement and pensions and the like. Our failure to do so has led to rampant consumerism, environmental crises, unchecked immigration, urban sprawl, financial speculation and a host of other ills that plague our economic, political and social systems.

That we’ve been reduced to the short-term interests of the most affluent gives lie to the notion that our system of government – our democracy – is based on the consent of the governed.

Government policies that run contrary to the public

interest – an increasing proportion of its actions – surely are the opposite of what we’d consent to if we were paying attention.

Who is responsible for that? Certainly those who’ve benefited have fostered an unending propaganda campaign that’s been every bit as effective in sweeping aside citizenship as the corporate marketing has been in turning us into consumers. We’ve happily abdicated power and responsibility for the comforts of our lives, buying into whatever version of nationalism and tribalism is being served by those with no regard for anything more than themselves.

Continuing their winner-takes-all performance from the week prior, the Jacks rolled over the Delhi Travellers 13-1 at the Wellesley arena on Friday. The following night, the Jacks braved the snowy trek to Paris, where they went on to leave the home out in the cold by a score of 4-0.

The wins gave the thirdplace Jacks (11-2-1-3) a much needed boost as they try to catch up to the top two teams of the league, Tavistock (15-2) and New Hamburg (15-4-0-1), while putting some crucial distance ahead of the receding fourth-place contenders, the Norwich Merchants (11-7).

Of the two games, the matchup against the Travellers presented the lowest hurdle for the Jacks, as the home side all but stole the show yet again from eighth-place Delhi squad (2-17).

The Jacks put up five on the board in the first frame alone, with the first goal coming just 23 seconds in off the stick of Alex Uttley.

Uttley potted the team’s

second goal minutes later, followed by Zachary Lyons with two more, and then James Ranson, who netted the team’s fifth in the last five seconds of the period.

Ranson put another one on the board halfway through the second, this time with Uttley lending an assist. Robert Colton followed up to make it 7-0 for the Jacks a few minutes later, followed again by Uttley with his third of the match.

The Travellers potted their lone goal of the match 14 minutes into the second – an unassisted marker from Mattson Demarest, but Wellesley’s Brendan Baker quickly responded with a marker of his own, making the score 9-1 by the end of the second.

The final 20 minutes of play saw the Jacks add four more to the board before the buzzer, the first coming from defenseman Peter Cascagnette, four minutes in. Jordan Hoekstra followed with the team’s first power-play marker of the match; Zach Ribeiro made it an even 12, and rounding out the scoring was Warren Gorman with the game’s second and final power play marker as things were winding down.

THEY SAY THAT EVERY outdoorsman firmly believes two things. The first is that the fish that got away was a world record and the second is the he or she can build a fire better than the next person.

I was reminded of this the other day when I watched my friend’s pitiful attempt at building a fire. Sure, the fire he was tending was going, but the flames were hardly clearing the top of the little metal chimney stove the water pot was seated on.

So I did what any experienced outdoorsman would do – I started fixing his pitiful fire when he was not looking. I did this by adding bits of birch bark and sticks that were probably much dryer than the ones he had used.

How do I know they were dryer? You could just tell.

As a result, the fire he had been tending to for the last five minutes really took hold and, had we been GALEA | 13

New season underway for Woolwich Sun Rays Local hockey team provides accommodations and opportunities for everyone to play Canada’s game VERONICA REINER AT 24, JORDYN COOPER is finally getting the opportunity to participate in her favourite sport after learning about the Woolwich Sun Rays, who played their first hockey game of the season earlier this month.

“I grew up watching it; my brother played since he was a little kid,” said Coo-

per. “So being able to play hockey now... it’s always been a little dream for me to be able to play something that I was never able to because there weren’t any teams in my area.”

Cooper has cerebral palsy, which adversely affects the development of movement and posture.

Growing up in the LondonExeter area, there were no

special hockey teams in which Cooper could participate. That’s where the Elmira team comes in.

The Woolwich Sun Rays is a special hockey team for people with developmental delays. Cooper was always a huge fan of hockey – she has a friend who volunteered with the Elmira Sugar Kings, and made sure to visit plenty of their

away games.

So she was delighted to hear about her chance to play the sport she was such a fan of watching.

“I heard about them a few seasons ago; I had friends that played with the Woolwich Sun Rays,” said Cooper. “So I came out to watch. At the time, it was too late to register to join. I was watching, and I was so

interested; I knew I wanted to play.

“So last season I was finally able to play. It was so fun to be out there with everyone else instead of just watching.”

The Woolwich Sun Rays accept players of nearly all ages, from six to 60. Teams are formed based on skills and ability, not age. Volunteers and coaches help the

roster learn and develop at their own pace. Staff also make accommodations to hockey gear based on each player’s needs.

“I actually have a velcropiece attached to my glove, it’s sewn on, and it attaches on to my elbow pad, which basically helps it stay on,” explained Cooper. “They SUN RAYS | 12

make special adjustments based on people’s needs.”

The team just wrapped up their first game on November 3 against the Cambridge Blades. The final score was 8-8. Winning or losing is not particularly important to the players in this game, according to team president Julie Jamieson.

“It’s more about the opportunity and the sense of participating in a game that is loved across the country,” she said. “The players are usually really glad that we can use their skills and abilities in a game situation.”

It also does not neces-

sarily operate in the same format as a typical hockey game. There are volunteers out on the ice to help players who may need it.

There’s no overtime if a game ends in a tie.

“Sometimes, depending on how the game is played, the ref plays a pretty significant part to make sure things remain quite equal,” added Jamieson.

The team practices once a week on Saturdays at 11 a.m. Cooper noted her skating ability had improved during her time playing hockey with the Sun Rays.

“I’ve improved a lot,” said Cooper. “My skating has become much better since I’ve started. I’m just faster, my

balance is better, and I’m able to stop much easier.”

The Woolwich Sun Rays were formed in 2015, beginning about a dozen players, but that number has increased with each season, notes Jamieson.

“We’re so grateful for the support of the community, especially the volunteers and the coaching staff,” said Jamieson. “We’re really grateful that we have such a good roster; they really make all the difference for the players.”

Two outta three ain’t bad, at least where Kings’ week is concerned Elmira follows close wins over Listowel and Brampton with losing struggle Tuesday night against Kitchener FAISAL ALI FACING THE MIDWESTERN CONFERENCE’S best and worst, the Elmira Sugar Kings skated away with a pair of victories before coming up short against a Kitchener squad that’s had their number so far this season.

On the road November 9 in Listowel, the Kings squeaked past the firstplace Cyclones 3-2 in overtime. Two days later on home ice, they posted a 4-2 win over the last-place Brampton Bombers. But Tuesday night, a short jaunt down the highway to Kitchener saw the team fall 4-1, the fourth straight loss to the Dutchmen.

Starting last Friday on the road, the Kings faced the Listowel Cyclones, eking out a narrow 3-2 victory settled in overtime.

Elmira drew first blood, the goal coming off the stick of Jonah Burley, assisted by Jeremey Goodwin and Hunter Dubecki, at 6:19. Listowel was able to knot things up, however, on a short-handed play, making it 1-1 with less than three minutes to go in the first frame.

It would take almost another full period of play for the tie to be broken, as Kurtis Goodwin (Zack Cameron, Burley) took advantage of a power play to get the go-ahead goal at 16:47. It was the middle period’s only scoring play.

The situation was reversed in the third, as Listowel scored the frame’s lone goal well past the midway point, forcing the an eventual overtime situation.

Scoring remained elusive through the first

The Sugar Kings got off to a slow start at last Sunday’s home game Nov. 11 against the Brampton Bombers, but ultimately pulled through with a 4-2 win. overtime, but K. Shots were 31-25 for Elmira, which performed just well enough to take the win from the conference-leading Cyclones (142-0-2).

On Sunday, the Kings were back home to welcome the Brampton Bombers. But what ought to have been an easier go of it against last-place team in Midwestern Conference (3-15-2) proved to be a protracted slog as Brampton took the lead and played the Kings tight well into the third.

with a lightning fast reply 20 seconds later to make it 3-2, which is where things would stay for nine more minutes before Brody Waters (McMahon, J. Goodwin) sealed the deal on the Kings’ third power-play chance of the night.

The outcome wasn’t as nail-biting as the Listowel game, but it was a tight affair given the difference in the standings between the Cyclones and the Bombers.

There was no victory to be had – tight, hard-fought or otherwise – as the Kings returned to the ice Tuesday night to take on the Dutchmen in Kitchener.

Elmira’s had a rough time of it against Kitchener this season, and this time was no exception.

The Dutchmen opened the scoring at 4:06 and added another five minutes later, the only goals of the frame ... and that would prove to be enough.

There were still 40 minutes to play, however, and Kitchener kept coming, going up 3-0 at 16:29 of the middle stanza before Elmira finally got on the board less than two minutes later. The goal that made it 3-1 was a power play marker from Anthony Azzano (Cameron, Jakson Kirk).

There would be no more scoring until the last minute of the game when, with the Elmira net empty for the extra attacker, the Dutchmen put the game away.

After a busy three-game stretch, the Kings have been taking a breather before the lone game of the week Sunday night against the Brantford 99ers. The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the WMC.

they got (31-16). Though giving up five power plays, the Jacks’ defenders were perfect, while the team capitalized on one of its four changes with the man advantage.

Koby Seiling (Uttley, Hoekstra) opened the scoring 11:28 into the first with the lone goal of the frame.

Star shooter Uttley potted the next two points, 3:30 (Shaun Pickering, Hoekstra) and 6:50 (Pickering, Tyler Schwindt) into the second.

The score was 3-0 by the final stanza, and Ribeiro (Danny Ranson, Warren Gorman) added one more on the power play to make it four at 16:41.

With another two wins under their belt, the Jacks

will be hoping to recreate the magic as they take on back-to-back visitors at the Wellesley arena this weekend. On Friday, they’ll welcome the seventh-place Ayr Centennials for a 7:30 p.m. matchup. The following night, however, will be the most challenging game of the week as Jacks welcome the first-place New Hamburg Firebirds for a rematch, again at 7:30 p.m.

New Hamburg has definitely been the stronger team this season so far, but the Jacks have proven to be near indomitable at home.

The Wellesley team fell in their first two matches on the road against the Firebirds, but then came back to stomp their rivals 4-2 just last week in their first meeting on Wellesley ice.

FAISAL ALI SPORTS LOVES A GOOD underdog story, and for the Waterloo County Secondary School Athletics Association football series this season, those underdogs were the EDSS Lancers. Battling it out in the blistering cold last Saturday at the WCSSAA finals in Cambridge, the EDSS senior football team was ultimately tackled by the five-time defending champs of the county,

Jacob Hespeler Secondary School.

The final score saw the EDSS contingent falling in a 37-7 decision. The temperature had dipped into the negatives, and a light snowfall dotted the field, but a sizable number of fans had come out to watch, blankets and thermoses in tow.

Despite the loss, the game was a significant milestone for EDSS. It was the first time the EDSS team had made it to

the WCSSAA finals since football was brought back to the school 13 years ago.

But despite a stellar season, including a riveting semifinal match against Waterloo Collegiate Institute that saw the Lancers scrape by with a 7-6 difference on a Hail Mary pass in the final few seconds of the game, the Lancers couldn’t best their Cambridge rivals in the finals.

The loss essentially cuts the Lancers’ chances

of making it to Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association (CWOSSA) regionals, as only the finalist was guaranteed to qualify. Short of a wildcard draw, the Lancers will have to sit the regionals out until they can return to the field next year.

With a strong showing in this year’s WCSSAA, the Lancers will no doubt be hoping to carry the momentum through into next year’s season.

GALEA: There’s only one right way to build a fire: my way FROM | 11

in a survival situation, the pasta with creamy Alfredo mushroom sauce which we were cooking would have been even warmer and probably would have saved our lives ’til dinner.

Unfortunately, before I could make it even better, he returned and went back to wrecking the fire.

A lot of people who do not understand fires – basically everyone but me – would have wondered how you can tell a fire is wrecked. Well, he wrecked this one by poking a stick at it and fanning the flames incorrectly.

Oh sure, the fire survived these amateurish attempts,

and even kept us warm, but only because of the work I had previously done to encourage it.

This is a small miracle though. Only a rank amateur would have used the poking stick my buddy was using. And the way he fanned it was OK for midAugust but certainly not robust enough for early November. Trust me.

The sad part was he was not open to criticism so he’ll probably never learn the correct way – also known as “my way” – to build a fire.

This leads me to another point. My buddy is one of those purists who gathers dry kindling, bark, twigs

and the like. Then he relies on flint and steel to create a spark which he coddles until it smokes and breaks into a tiny, delicate flame.

All this is cute, but not really required if you bring enough lighter fluid and a lighter.

I know it is the romantic thing to be able to create a fire with nothing more than bark, dry pine needles, kindling and small pieces of strategically placed fire wood and flint and steel, but I’m also pretty sure that primitive peoples would have gladly traded all those things in for a lighter, blow torch or a propane stove had they been available. They were,

after all, a practical people.

The best fire maker I ever met routinely used a gallon of unleaded gasoline to “get things going.” I have never gone that far, but only because I look silly without eyebrows.

The point I am making here is that everyone has a different way to build a fire. And, sometimes, if you want to keep peace in the outdoors you have to sit back and watch another person make a roaring one in a way that’s completely wrong.

I did this on that day, while I was thinking about that world record smallmouth bass I lost last summer.

Woodland’s sports teams have a good fall session Volleyball and basketball squads now heading to regionals with an eye on making it to the provincials FAISAL ALI SPORTS TEAMS AT WOODLAND Christian High School had a stellar start to the year, with a number of them qualifying for the Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association (CWOSSA) championships this week.

On Wednesday, the Breslau school hosted the junior and senior ‘A’ boys CWOSSA championships, inviting eight other teams from seven schools to compete.

Though scores were unavailable prior to print time for the volleyball championships, junior team coach Jamie Wright said he was feeling confident. Speaking before the games, Wright said his team’s play was reason for optimism.

“It’s been going very well.

The boys have made excellent progress through the season. We knew coming into the season that we had a team that had a lot of opportunity to grow and to improve,” said Wright.

The junior team ranked second over the regular season in the Waterloo Country Secondary School Athletics Association (WCSSAA), just behind Resurrection Catholic Secondary School.

The senior team also claimed the second-place spot over the WCSSAA regular season. Like the junior team, the seniors competed yesterday in the CWOSSA

regionals; but unlike the younger team, a good showing yesterday could mean a spot at the provincials.

Finally, the Woodland girls’ senior basketball team will be playing at the upcoming CWOSSA ‘A’ regionals tomorrow. Like the senior boys’ volleyball team, the girls will be battling for a chance to represent Woodland at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincials.

Assistant coach Matt Hazenberg attributed the girls’ success in part to a change of the school’s basketball team.

“A few years ago, there was a revamp of the basketball program. We got some community coaches to come in and help out with our school’s program, starting from the ground up with the junior girls,” said Hazenberg.

Still, the coach definitely does not discount the oldfashioned grit and determination of the Woodland team.

“The girls have done really, really well. They’ve been practicing hard, so they’re really looking to CWOSSA this weekend, because they want another shot at getting a medal this year at OFSAA,” he said.

The girls’ senior basketball CWOSSA championships will be held tomorrow (Friday) at Kincardine District Secondary School.

The senior girls’ basketball team at Woodland Christian High School had an exceptional regular season, and will be competing at the CWOSSA championship games Friday in Kincardine.

But the Ford government’s decision to delay a second increase in the minimum wage to $15 an hour from $14 has earned the support of local businesses and even some minimum wage earners in the region as well.

Proponents have argued that businesses need time to absorb the cost of 2018’s hike, when the minimum wage was raised to $14 from $11.60 – a 21 per cent increase in the span of a single year. Under the previous Liberal government’s plan, the minimum wage was proposed to be raised by another dollar as of Jan. 1, 2019; the new Progressive Conservative administration has put that one hold.

Promising corn harvest compromised by mould

ONTARIO’S AGRICULTURAL INSURANCE ORGANIZATION, Agricorp, has received 1,300 calls reporting mouldy corn.

It’s turning into a huge problem for farmers and has many on edge.

The mould is Gibberella ear rot, which can produce a mycotoxin called Deoxynivalenol (DON).

At low levels it’s not considered toxic to livestock.

But about one-quarter of this year’s corn harvest – which was predicted to be a record for yield – is coming in at levels much higher. In many cases, elevators won’t accept it because it can’t be used by end users.

ROBERTS: What nature giveth, nature can take away as bountiful harvest faces some risks FROM | 15

and availability of feed, DON is leaving corn producers anxious about if and how they’ll sell their crop.

“We are facing one of the most severe outbreaks of DON in corn that we have ever seen,” says Grain Farmers of Ontario chair Markus Haerle, a producer from eastern Ontario. “We consider this issue at a catastrophic level at this point and it is only getting worse. We have made this issue our top priority.”

Haerle says the fallout from the toxin is creating huge questions in the farm community about cash

flow and revenue loss, markets, crop insurance and testing protocols.

Marie Versteeg, manager of the executive board and committees for the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario, says DON’s severity is being felt across the entire farm sector.

“In Ontario, it means that this year, Ontario’s farmers, processors, and insurers aren’t seeing many positives, although yields generally have been good and not all crops are affected by DON,” she says.

Indeed, crops were doing well through September and October, and

yields were promising.

Rain came at the right time … but ultimately, dampness prevailed.

And it’s that dampness that contributes to mouldy conditions, says Dale Cowan, senior agronomist wth AGRIS and Wanstead co-ops.

Agronomically, dampness is measured in hours of leaf wetness, the amount of time corn plant leaves under the canopy are damp. Elongated wetness due to excessive fog, dew and precipitation creates an environment for mould growth, he explains.

Ontario is the most affected province. But a

cross-Canada survey by Alltech’s mycotoxin management team showed that while corn silage from Alberta and Saskatchewan had levels of mycotoxins lower than Ontario and British Columbia, the two prairie provinces had increased risk from mycotoxins in barley silage.

Ontario is now trying to determine how to manage DON-infected harvested corn. Research is underway with ethanol producers to determine if it can ultimately be used for ethanol processing. Industry officials are unsure the distillers dry grains that are a by-product of ethanol production will be

usable for animal feed.

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture is concerned about how this outbreak could affect producers’ physical health. In his weekly bulletin, president Keith Currie urges producers to be safe when handling DON-infected corn. “Inhaling the fungiderived poison can have serious health implications, restricting airways and proper lung function,” he says.

Currie says to prevent exposure, use protective gloves and eye protection, wear a mask and only work in well-ventilated areas. The greatest risks of exposure can occur in

semi-enclosed places like grain bins and the areas around operating combines and loading wagons.

Agronomist Cowan says the most effective offence against these toxins is a good defence. It’s too late for this growing season, but for next year he suggests approaches such as multiple hybrids in each field, and uniform planting depth for uniform emergence.

“Stakeholders need to get together to develop a better risk management strategy to reduce incidence and severity of ear molds establishing in the first place, and later, escalating,” he notes.

LABOUR: Government takes “open for business” approach to wages and working conditions FROM | 15

wage freeze, the government’s Making Ontario Open for Business Act nullifies most of the employee gains set out in the Liberals’ Fair Workplaces Better Jobs Act (Bill 148), including emergency leave provisions, workplace scheduling, on-call and notification periods, among others.

The wage issue is the most prevalent, however.

“For the most part, I don’t think everybody was adamantly opposed to a change in minimum wage,” suggested Art Sinclair, vice-president of the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce. “It was just the speed and the increase that was the overall concern we certainly heard from our members over the last two years.”

The point was echoed by Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Mike Harris, who said holding the minimum wage at $14 until 2020 would allow businesses to “catch up” to the sudden increase.

“We’ve been consulting with small businesses, medium sized businesses, large employers all across the province,” said Harris.

“And after hearing from employers, when we’re talking about a [21 per cent] increase in minimum wage in a very short time period, it was directly impacting employers to be able to continue providing good jobs for employees. There were a lot of businesses that were closing. There were a lot of people that were getting laid off due to the increase in minimum wage.”

The province will be holding the minimum wage at $14 until October 2020, after which it would

be indexed to inflation.

“What that does is it will still provide an increase in minimum wage, but it will also allow for employers to be able to meet those specific employment demands,” said Harris.

However, the current $14 an hour wage and even the former target of $15 both still fall short of a living wage in Waterloo Region, estimated at $16.10 an hour. The living wage, defined as the rate a fulltime worker needs to earn to cover basic expenses, is calculated yearly based on the Canadian Living Wage Framework.

While the PC government’s minimum wage falls short, Harris noted that the government’s intent was to tackle the cost of living itself, and spur on more business and better job opportunities. By repealing the Green Energy Act, and blocking initiatives like cap-and-trade and a federal carbon tax, Harris said the provincial government was lowering the cost of living for Ontarians by decreasing taxation.

“Between being able to tie things to inflation, between the cost of consumer goods going down and the availability of employment – creating good jobs for people. And we’re not just talking about minimumwage jobs, we’re talking about people that are going to be able to move away from a minimum wage job that may not have been available to them previously.

“This all translates into that living wage,” he added.

For some workers, the prospect of not seeing a one dollar increase in the

minimum wage was a secondary concern to the cost of living.

“I wouldn’t say it makes much difference,” said a minimum-wage earner at a local eatery who did not wish to be identified.

“If wages were increased, everything like groceries or rent would increase.”

Samantha Martin, an employee of another local establishment earning $14.75 an hour, questioned the impact of the one-dollar increase. She expected her wage would be increased after a three month probation period at work, but noted she still lives paycheque to paycheque.

“But I’m already going to be making that in three months. So does it benefit me? No, not really,” said Martin of the $15 target.

Even if the minimum wage hike increased her own wages, she was dubious about the benefit to her, especially if she was bumped into a higher tax bracket.

“They need to lower the cost of living, and then they can talk about raising the minimum wage.”

A third employee spoken to at another business said the change from $11.60 to $14 this year was already substantial enough. The employee noted that the change happened around the time she returned to work from maternity leave.

“To me, it’s quite the increase already,” she said.

Harris noted that the Progressive Conservative government was looking to move Ontarians away from a “minimum-wage economy” through their policies, by focusing on creating job opportunities.

It’s a strategy that could pay off in the long haul, but

asked about those people currently making $14 and perhaps struggling to get by – those who could benefit from even the meager $1 an hour increase – Harris pointed to the cost living decreases the government was pushing.

“I think we’ve already shown leadership with that being able to decrease the provincial portion of the income tax will help make up some of that difference for Ontarians,” said Harris. “So we are taking steps to make sure that we help respect the people that are working minimum wage, but we want to see them move forward with their careers.”

Whether the PC government’s direction will benefit minimum-wage workers, and the province as a whole, will be determined with time and data.

In the meantime, as the minimum wage holds for another two years, those hoping to see their wages rise will have to bargain with their employers, or seek new employment opportunities.

Those in the townships hoping to do the latter can find support through Woolwich Community Services, for instance.

“What Woolwich Community Services does is offer a variety of options to those seeking employment,” said Leigh-Anne Quinn, community resource coordinator at WCS. “We have a job board that lists local jobs, we have computers that are available for the general public to use when job searching, and we provide free faxing and photocopying services for job purposes.”

Professional coaching is

also available by drop-in or appointment, while the WCS’s services are open to anyone, including those already employed.

“We have a career work coach from Conestoga

College’s employment program into our office once every two weeks for job seekers who are looking for additional assistance writing resumes and cover letters,” said Quinn.

Chances are your family Christmas gathering won’t get this crazy Fugitives and off-beat neighbours bring the laughs in Theatre Wellesley’s In-Laws, Outlaws and Other People (That Should be Shot) VERONICA REINER WITH HOLIDAY PLANNING IN full swing, chances are any family dynamics you may anticipate – or even dread – will pale in comparison to what unfolds in Theatre Wellesley’s latest production.

A dysfunctional holidaythemed comedy, In-Laws, Outlaws and Other People (That Should be Shot) makes rather merry with the kind of off-kilter family members everyone makes fun of for their quirks and strange behaviours, especially during holiday gettogethers.

The play is set at a Christmas Eve dinner in a modest, upper-middleclass home in snowy Brooklyn. The excitement begins when two bumbling crooks that have just robbed a bank, Tony and Vinny, use a ruse to gain entrance into the house and spend the evening holding the uncontrollable Douglas family hostage.

The unmanageable situation gets worse with an ever-growing list of family members and neighbours who keep dropping by.

The botched robbery of a neighbourhood liquor store by the high-strung Tony (played by Dave McNorgan) and his goofy sidekick Vinnie (Nathan Martin) is just the beginning, as things go downhill faster than any toboggan to be found under the tree.

“With that, there comes

a number of comedic moments,” explained producer Rhonda Caldwell of the crooks’ efforts to avoid police detection. “It’s a little bit of a Christmas story. But, you know, people fall on hard times, people make bad choices – how do we support each other through those things? It could be family, or it could be people that botched up the robbery.”

The Douglas family is determined to have an enjoyable family Christmas dinner regardless of the chaotic circumstances.

“The family just sort of rolls with the punches,” said Caldwell. “So it’s like ‘hold it! This is our family gathering. We still need to eat dinner. Oh wait, we still need to eat dessert.

It’s Christmas, of course we have to have dessert.’

And then it’s like, ‘What’s dessert without coffee?’

They want to go on and do Christmas as they usually do.”

“By the end, it’s like ‘who is holding who hostage?’” said McNorgan with a laugh.

The tone is a light and family-friendly treatment of the script by Steve Franco. It’s all about the laughs.

“It is probably one of the funniest productions that Theatre Wellesley has put on so far,” added Jamie Russell, who plays Bunny.

“It’s also probably one of the largest casts we’ve had.

The cast is a mix of experienced actors and newcomers. Allan Strong, who plays the dad, has been

with Theatre Wellesley since its inception over two decades ago, while this production is a first for Dorisa Martinello, who plays Aunt Rose.

“They made me an 83-year-old lady with blue

hair, and a Jersey accent,” said Martinello with a laugh. “I didn’t pick that – they picked me for that; they told me what to do!

You audition, they look at your character and say ‘you’ll fit.’”

The casting process for Theatre Wellesley is unique in that aspiring actors do not target their specific role. Instead, they are called in to read a script, then their character is chosen by a panel based on the audition and the script.

“You act out different scenes, and then they tell you who you are later,” said Martin.

Theatre Wellesley is very much about encouraging people to come out and enjoy the experience, so newcomers are always welcome.

“I think the one greatest thing with Theatre Wellesley is that we always want everyone to have fun,” said Russell. “We always encourage new people to come out whether that’s to be onstage or help backstage, we’re always encouraging people from the community to come out and do that.”

“We always tell ourselves that we want to put on good theatre, and we want to have fun while we’re doing it,” added McNorgan.

The Theatre Wellesley production of In-Laws, Outlaws and Other People (Who Should Be Shot) runs November 22 and 23 at 8 p.m. and November 24 and 25 at 2 p.m. at the Wellesley Community Centre.

Loved mother of Lester and Martha, Maurice and Susannah, all of RR 6, Mount Forest, Naomi and Paul Martin, Ruth and Floyd Martin, all of RR 3, Mount Forest, Robert and Lena of RR 6, Mount Forest, Emma and Willard Martin of Holstein, Phares and Mary of RR 6, Mount Forest, and Paul and Shirley of RR 1, Elmira.

Also survived by 47 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren. Sister of Lucinda (Mrs. Lester Brubacher) of RR 2, Elmira, and Adeline and Angus Bauman of RR1, Linwood. Sisterin-law of Ada (Mrs. Elmer Weber), Lydia (Mrs. Edwin Weber), Mary (Mrs. Henry Weber), and Leonard and Gladys Martin. Predeceased by her parents Henry and Lydia Ann (Weber) Weber, four brothers, one sister, one sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law, one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.

Annie was an excellent baker and gardener and for many years went to the Waterloo market with her goods. She enjoyed her many friends at Chartwell and valued the activities they shared. People like Wayne Martin, recently recognized for his extensive volunteerism at the Field of Dreams affordable housing project in Elmira.

The founder of Way-Mar Inc., a home renovation contractor based in Wallenstein, Martin has lent thousands of hours to the construction of affordable housing in Elmira since retiring from the business.

A volunteer of 25 years with Elmira District Community Living (EDCL), which provides housing and support services for people with intellectual disabilities in the community, Martin received a modest dedication on October 30 at the fourth and latest phase of the Field Dreams housing project in Elmira.

“I served on the [EDCL] board first,” explained Martin at the construction site at the new building, which will be the first at the Field of Dreams to also have elevator access.

under the spell of odors, even if we arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fully aware of it.â&#x20AC;? In a recent study, researchers demonstrated that sniffing a romantic partnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shirt can lower levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the backstory here?

A. The human olfactory system can detect over 1 trillion different odors, but our sense of smell is perhaps our most underrated ability, says Carl Engelking in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Strange Science,â&#x20AC;? a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Discoverâ&#x20AC;? magazine special issue. Interestingly, we

experience scent signals different than our other senses: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rather than proceeding directly to the thalamus â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the seat of consciousness â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like other sensory signals, scent information travels to part of the brain associated with emotions and memories,â&#x20AC;? meaning that most of it is experienced subconsciously.

In this study involving 96 opposite-sex couples, men were given a shirt to wear for 24 hours and told to avoid anything that could interfere with their natural scent. The women were given three shirts to sniff â&#x20AC;&#x201D; their loverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, a strangerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and one never worn. Afterward, they took a stressinducing test and provided a saliva sample to monitor their cortisol levels. Those

women who had unknowingly sniffed their partnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scent had lower stress levels throughout the test, and those who correctly identified their partnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shirts had even lower counts.

his volunteerism, Martin has donated thousands of in-kind dollars to the housing project, helping to keep the entire project affordable for the local not-for-profit – and for the tenants who live there.

“I’m not sure whether or not we would have accomplished what we’ve accomplished without Wayne’s contribution,” said Greg Bechard, executive director of EDCL and its partner organization, the Elmira Development Support Corporation, which operates the housing.

A contractor will typically charge a minimum fee of 10 per cent of the total cost of a housing project for overseeing construction, notes Bechard. And at $1 million per house for the four homes at the Field of Dreams housing complex, Bechard estimates Martin would have personally saved the organization $400,000 in costs through his volunteerism – at minimum – just on the Field of Dreams project alone.

“We would have had to fundraise another $400,000, and I don’t know whether that would have been possible in this community,” says Bechard. “And then I don’t know whether or not as a group we would have been prepared to

undertake the project because the debt load would not have made sense.”

But beyond just making Elmira a more hospitable place for those with intellectual disabilities, Martin’s contributions may have helped spur on similar projects in other communities across Canada.

The Field of Dreams homes have gained considerable attention in recent years for the innovative approach taken towards affordable housing. Last year, for instance, the Field of Dreams project in Elmira was one of only a handful of affordable housing projects to be featured in the federal government’s 2017 Canadian National Housing Strategy.

At the core of the Field of Dreams housing is the “good neighbour” concept, where people with intellectual disabilities live independently alongside neighbours who can help provide support and a sense of community The Elmira project has even inspired other groups across the country to follow a similar path, says Bechard.

“What’s happened in Elmira has offered hope and inspiration for other groups trying to figure how they can address the need for safe, affordable housing in their communities. So if you look at it in that context, without Wayne it’s quite possible

that none of this would have ever happened,” said Bechard.

“I have the greatest respect for [Wayne]. He’s one of a kind. I’ve never met anybody like him.

His sense of responsibility to his fellow man is unequaled.”

For Martin, who is currently overseeing the housing project’s fourth building, the reward for all his hard work is seeing the tenants enjoying their new homes.

“Well, that’s a little difficult to describe. It’s a very good feeling,” said Martin. “So that’s really what gives me satisfaction, to see these people being able to live on their own, more than what they had ever lived before. Whether it’s because their parents are unable to care for them anymore, or whether it’s just to help them develop to their full potential – it’s just a very rewarding experience to see it actually happen.”

While the housing is under construction, Bechard notes that the organization is also looking for good neighbour tenants to fill a vacancy at the Field of Dreams.

CHEF’S TABLE: Time for something heartier

1-1/2 lb pork shoulder, trimmed and cut into cubes 1 onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 Tbsp. minced fresh gingerroot 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. salt Pinch of pepper 1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth 1 Tbsp. jerk paste (or to taste)

2 Tbsp. chopped fresh coriander 3 green onions, sliced

Place red pepper and squash in slow-cooker.

In large non-stick skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Cook pork, in batches, until browned, about 5 minutes.

Place in slow-cooker.

Add onion, garlic and ginger to skillet and cook

until lightly softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir flour, salt and pepper into onion mixture.

In medium bowl, whisk broth and jerk paste until smooth; stir into skillet and bring to simmer. Pour over pork and vegetables.

Cover and cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours or until pork and vegetables are tender.

Sprinkle with coriander and green onions.

Wayne Martin was recognized at a modest dedication ceremony for the fourth Field of Dreams apartment building now under construction in Elmira. A plaque built into the side of the building lists Martin simply as a “Field of Dreams Builder.”

Emmanuel Evangelical Missionary Church is serving as the official collection centre for Operation Christmas Child in the Elmira area. “It could be almost anything,” said Martin, on potential gift ideas. “We recommend toiletry items like maybe a toothbrush, soap or a washcloth, that kind of thing. You could fit some smaller items of clothing in the shoebox.

She recommended packing hard candies instead of chocolate, as chocolate tends to melt on the journey overseas. Another idea is to leave a handwritten note in the shoebox for the child to read.

“Sometimes people write back,” said Martin.

“So it’s a way of finding out how your shoebox was received and learn a little bit about the family that has benefitted from it.”

Operation Christmas Child provides gifts for children up to age 14 in locations around the world, including the likes of Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Sierra Leone. Giftgivers have the option to target their shoebox towards a specific age range and gender.

“So if you’re shopping with your children and you want to teach them the meaning of the holidays and how good it is to give, they can actually go and pick out a gift for a child their age,” said Martin.

Those interested can use their own shoebox or pick one up at Emmanuel Evangelical Missionary Church.

Organizers are currently in the midst of the collection week, which runs from November 12-18.
