T

here was no warm send-off for Woolwich councillors Tuesday night. Their decision to approve a gravel pit application saw to that.

Meeting for the last time as a committee of the whole – a final council meeting will be held Nov. 23 – councillors gave conditional approval for a new pit at 125 Peel St., Winterbourne, despite pleas from a dozen delegates to defer or defeat the application. A full public gallery jeered the decision, a 3-1 vote, with only Coun. Murray Martin opposed.

The vote went ahead despite a staff recommendation the issue be deferred to the next session of council, when the newly-elected politicians could deal with the application in context of two much larger pits proposed for the area.

or many of us, there is more joy in the act of giving a Christmas present than of receiving one. The Wellesley and District Lions Club is offering the chance to both give and receive this festive season at their Christmas Tyme Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony on Dec. 10.

Visitors can enjoy Christmas carols and a live nativity as they meander through the village of Wellesley and, for just $5, can purchase a bulb on the Tree of Light, all proceeds going to Meals on Wheels and the Community Action Program for Children.

“It’s a good way to start your Christmas celebrations and donate to the needy at the same time,” said event cocoordinator and Lions Club member Marilyn Bisch. “It

This is the 20th year for the annual tradition enjoyed by young and old alike.

This year’s event includes story time with Santa for preschoolers, the parade, a live nativity scene and carol singing.

The day’s events kick off with preschool story time with Santa at the Pfeifer Gallery between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. Kids under six will get free treat bags and photos with Santa. Cookies and hot apple cider will be provided during the ceremony courtesy of Wellesley Apple Products and the Lions Club.

A live nativity play, complete with sheep, goats and even a camel, will be presented beside Wellesley pond at 6:30 and again at

7:20 p.m. The parade starts at 6:45, and the lighting of the tree will happen at approximately 7:30 p.m.

This year the honour of flipping the switch that lights the tree goes to Jim Green, a prominent citizen who has contributed to baseball programs in Wellesley and the wider community. Following the switch-flipping will be a round of Christmas carols.

“I think I was asked because last year I retired from my position as chairman of the Don Green Memorial Ball Tournament,” explained Green. “I am very honoured to have been invited to do the tree lighting.”

The tree lighting is a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels and the Community Action Program for Children.

Bulbs can be purchased at a dozen businesses in the

village, and donations can be made up to Dec. 31. Additionally, along the parade route, non-perishable food donations can be made to the Wilmot Family Resource Centre.

“I’m hoping everyone will find it in their hearts to donate,” said Bisch. “These are two very worthwhile programs which do a lot of good for the families and seniors in our community.”

The Wellesley and District Lions Club meet the first and third Tuesday of each month at the Pondview Retirement Complex. Lions are a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs.

For many families in the region who may be able to get by day-to-day without making use of the services the organization provides, WCS’ Kelly Christie says that Christmas can pose an

extra financial burden.

“Christmas is very, very expensive but it’s also a very celebrated holiday,” said Christie. “When Christmas comes they don’t want their kids to do without, that’s when they’ll come and ask us for the help.”

Dissatisfied with the service provided, Woolwich has terminated its turf-maintenance contracts with Dundee Nursery and Landscaping. Acting on a report from recreation and facilities director Larry Devitt, council voted this week to make the changes effective immediately.

The work involves looking after the township’s properties in Elmira and St. Jacobs, as well as its cemeteries. The company was awarded a three-year contract in April 2009, but there have been problems since that time. After numerous attempts to correct the problems, the situation has not improved, said Devitt.

“Staff feel ample opportunities were provided to the contractor to address the shortcomings. The response was abysmal,” reads his report.

A new contract will be tendered, a four-year term coinciding with the term of council. As well, a fourth coverage area, Breslau, will be added to the list, adding another 26 acres to the mix, for a total of 113 acres.

The jump to $410 an hour from $350 matches rates set by the Ministry of Transportation.

Fees will be levied in cases where firefighters respond to a false alarm, an outdoor fire where no burn permit was issued and to insurance claims following response to a motor-vehicle collision, among others.

Wellesley councillors passed the amendment to the township’s fees and charges bylaw Tuesday night.

The problem is more widespread than most people care to admit, says the coordinator of the family violence prevention program offered through Woolwich Community Services in Elmira.

Gravel pit vote emotional one for Ward 3 councillor Steve Kannon

n the end, Coun. Murray Martin did what he said he would: sided with his constituents by voting against the Kuntz Topsoil, Sand and Gravel application for a new pit in Winterbourne.

As councillors discussed the zone change application Tuesday night, Martin used the platform to send a parting message to Ward 3 residents who voted for change in last month’s

municipal election, largely on the basis of the gravel pit debate.

His voice at times shaking with emotion, he said he would support the residents’ stance against the pit despite thinking the applicant would run a responsible operation.

“I know I’ve still got some arrows in me from you people, but I’ve consistently said that I would respect the people’s wishes.

That means that when

you elected me, and you voiced your opinion, I would support you,” he said just prior to the vote that followed more than two hours of sometimes rancorous public input.

“It’s a matter of integrity for me. I’m going to keep my word to the people, because that means a lot to me.

Because only based on what I’ve committed to people, I’m not going to support it.”

The application was

Earlier, he dismissed

claims that council should defer a decision on the gravel pit to the next council, arguing some of the incoming councillors had in effect prejudged the issue.

“I would suggest that if you pass it on to the new council, they have a conflict, because they already have made a decision without seeing any of the background, without seeing any of the studies – they used it (the gravel issue) for political gain.”

Although this week’s vote favoured the project, the application will still be reviewed by the new council, which will be swornin Dec. 7. The two most contentious gravel pits – Capital Paving’s bid in West Montrose and the Hunder Developments application near Conestogo – have yet to be decided on. Those decisions will fall squarely on a council that will have four newcomers at the table.

Mark Bauman argued the township has promised the applicant, Kuntz Topsoil, Sand and Gravel Ltd., that it would make a decision before the end of the current council’s term.

“It’s an issue of integrity,” he said, drawing the ire of those in the gallery.

The decision may be moot, however, as it could still be reconsidered by the new council, which will be sworn-in Dec. 7.

This week’s zonechange approval was conditional, with outstanding issues such as well-water monitoring figures having to be completed before the deal is finalized. That’s not likely until next spring. Between now and then, at any rate, a new council has the right to review the decision.

In that light, mayorelect Todd Cowan, who attended the meeting Tuesday night, said in an interview the township is not handcuffed by the decision.

While not necessarily opposed to the project

or other gravel pits, he said council is charged with protecting residents and will review the applications accordingly.

“We got a mandate for change – that’s what we’re going to deliver on.”

Those words will be music to the ears of residents who repeatedly reminded councillors the Oct. 25 election was a vote against gravel pits.

“Although legally you may have the right to make decisions concerning this aggregate application, morally you do not. I think the vote (Oct. 25) was a non-confidence vote by the electorate in this council’s ability to represent the interests of the constituents of this township on issues of aggregate,” said West Montrose resident Lynne Hare, expressing a common sentiment.

Many of those out Tuesday night, and expected back next week, will have similar messages for the next council, where four of the five spaces will be filled by newcomers.

As with the two other large pits – Capital Paving in West Montrose

and Hunder Developments near Conestogo – residents have serious concerns about traffic, safety, noise, water pollution and the landscape. They’re expected to continue to hammer home that point, likely all the way to an Ontario Municipal Board hearing in every case.

There, the arguments will be like those of Winterbourne resident Jan Huissoon, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo, who called into question the noise studies submitted by the applicant. His calculations show the berms and other noiseattenuation measures proposed for the site will be inadequate.

Noting that an “amphitheatre effect” exists in the area – noise would travel upwards to homes on the high ground surrounding the low-lying pit – he said the quiet rural neighbourhoods will be adversely affected.

“We’re not not going to be seriously impacted,” he said, dismissing claims the pit would have no unacceptable social impacts on neighbours.

He called on councillors to explain what happens if the operation is far noisier than expected. “What happens then? What’s our recourse?”

For Conestogo resident Bill Norrish, the project is going ahead for the benefit of one person at the expense of hundreds of others who’ll pay both financially and through diminished quality of life. That, he said, is enough to warrant turning down the application.

“There’ll be a decline in real estate values ... $8 million in our community lost so that one individual can come in and make a profit,” he said, adding the township will lose more money than it collects from the operation.

With an expected haul of 840,000 metric tonnes of gravel expected over the entire life of the pit, Woolwich’s share, at $0.06 per tonne, would amount to $50,000.

That’s the same figure the township has pledged toward paving a stretch of Jigs Hollow Road from the entrance to the operation to Northfield Drive.

Even with increased

property taxes moving to an industrial class from the current agricultural zoning, the revenues to the township wouldn’t cover the wear-and-tear on roadways, finance director Richard Petherick said in a later interview.

In approving the Kuntz application, council did impose a number of restrictions on the operation, most notably a sunset clause: the pit is to close within 15 years.

That item proved most contentious, with the applicant opposed and two of the councillors looking to ease the restrictions.

David Sisco, a planner with IBI Group representing Kuntz Topsoil, Sand and Gravel, argued against the clause, noting his client had agreed to all other concessions, including shortening the hours of operation.

Of some 6,100 gravel pits and quarries in the province, only one has a sunset clause imposed on it – why impose such measures on the Winterbourne operation? he asked.

With a licence to remove up to 150,000 tonnes

a year, Kuntz could play out the 840,000 tonnes of aggregate in less than six years, but the rate of extraction will depend on market demand, said Sisco, maintaining resources should not be left in the ground if not all of it is sold within 15 years.

His argument resonated with Bauman, who looked for alternatives to ensure the pit would be decommissioned in a timely manner. He worried the clause might not stand up at an Ontario Municipal Board appeal.

But director of planning and engineering Dan Kennaley, calling it “legal, appropriate and necessary,” said the sunset clause is defensible. Furthermore, he would be unable to support the zone change application without the cause, adding the impacts would be unacceptable otherwise.

This week’s raucous session is not the last residents have heard of this issue. The next step comes Tuesday night when councillors meet for the last time: the decisions made Nov. 16 have to be formally ratified.

New Elmira subdivision wins approval

Winding down term, council gives nod to OP and zone changes for Lunor Group project Steve Kannon In one of its final acts, Woolwich’s current council has given the green light to a large subdivision that will reshape the northwest section of Elmira.

The Official Plan and zone changes approved Tuesday pave the way for up to 1,400 residential units on what is currently farmland north of Church Street West.

Work on the Lunor Group project could get underway as soon as next spring.

The decision came with some hurdles, however, as two councillors voted against it, largely on the basis of

a staff recommendation the matter should be handled by the new council coming into office next month.

Council did have to defer a decision on proposed cost-sharing agreements for the extension of Barnswallow Drive and a piece of land that might one day house a new fire station. Unable to make decisions on spending in excess of $50,000 as they wind down their term, councillors had to remove those items from the agreement.

The issue of road improvements was a deal-breaker for Coun.

Murray Martin, who said he was concerned about the subdivision’s

impact on traffic, estimating it would put a minimum of 2,000 more cars on the road.

There are already concerns in Elmira about the volume of traffic and about speeding as drivers look for ways to avoid Arthur Street while getting through town. In fact, the township is investigating traffic calming measures on roads, including Barnswallow Drive, he noted.

“What are we going to do with 2,000 more cars? How are we going to deal with them in Elmira? What about at the roundabout (in St. Jacobs)? We have to build roads to carry more traffic before we

fill it up with houses,” Martin said of the subdivision.

With those questions unanswered, he voted against the changes, saying the next council should deal with the issues.

Coun. Sandy Shantz, too, opted for deferral, joining Martin in voting ‘no.’

While recognizing that removing the township’s portion, including the Barnswallow extension, is problematic, Coun. Mark Bauman said he expects the developer will cooperate with the new council when the issue is dealt with at a later date.

The overall design

of the subdivision currently calls for the redevelopment of two existing farm properties on the north side of Church Street, adjacent to the Elmira Farm Service site. A four-acre portion at the rear of that property would in fact be included in the plan.

The bulk of the 180acre development will take place on two farms purchased in 2005. The deal involves five property owners.

A 93-acre farm at 90 Church St. W., known as Riverbend, is the proposed site of 464 to 826 units of mixed housing types and a commercial block fronting on Church Street. To the

WCS is asking that anyone who wishes to drop off supplies for the hampers to do so at their office at 73 Arthur St. S. in Elmira before Dec. 12.

They are also taking requests now from families who will want to make use of the program.

To qualify, families must live within Woolwich Township or the north part of Wellesley where WCS provides services, and they have to qualify as low-income. For that, WCS will use the Statistics Canada cutoff as a guide and request an income statement as proof. For a family of four, for example, the cutoff is $501.44 per week.

Families who qualify for the program make

a wish list of items for their family, and WCS staff will do their best to fill those requests.

To help reach that goal, WCS has set up Christmas-wish trees at the Home Hardware locations in Elmira, St. Jacobs and Linwood as well as the Crossroads Restaurant.

The trees have tags on them with items that have already been requested by families.

Members of the public can purchase the items

on the tag and donate them back to the WCS, knowing that the item will go to someone who really wants it.

On Dec. 12, WCS will occupy Lions Hall in Elmira to fill all the Christmas hampers that families have requested. The hampers will be ready for pick up by Dec. 16.

The entire process is anonymous, and each family is identified by a number rather than their name.

Businesses and families can also sponsor a family if they choose. Simply let WCS know the amount your organization or family wants to spend, and they will match you up with a family gift hamper and use your donations to sponsor that particular family.

Some 130 volunteers working over the course of 10 hours produced 1,418 apple pies last weekend in support of Elmira’s Gale Presbyterian Church. The pies are to be sold to raise money for the building fund.

Organizers hope to see $10,000 once expenses are paid. More than 1,100 pies were sold before the first apple was peeled. There are still some available however, for $10 apiece. They’re currently stored in a freezer at the church.

ntario Chapter 18 of the Red Knights motorcycle club recently donated $300 to St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener following their annual “fall colours ride” up to Haliburton and the Algonquin Park area in September. Club president Bob Brown and past-president John Scheeringa presented

the cheque to the hospital on Nov. 4.

“We do several rides in a year, that’s just one of them,” said Brown.

“They’re mainly to go out with fellow firefighters; the fall colours ride was to see the leaves.”

This was the second year for their ride up to Haliburton, and the first where they raised funds for charity.

Brown said that several

members of the club had to use the services at St. Mary’s in the past year, so they wanted to help give back.

They gathered donations from several local businesses and held a raffle during their ride weekend from Sept. 1719. The club also met up with several other Red Knight members from across Ontario. The money will go towards the purchase of a new

Brown, 49, has been riding a motorcycle since he was 16, and has been a resident of Elmira for his entire life. He has also been a volunteer at the Elmira fire station since about 1990. He said riding in a car is nothing compared to riding on the open road with a big group of motorcyclists.

“It’s a nice way to see the country; it’s different than being in a car.

You get to experience things that you wouldn’t normally experience in a car, like the smells and the temperature and everything. Just being with a bunch of people, it makes it more interesting too.”

The club consists of about 30 members spread out across Elmira, Ayr, Alma, Beechville and Kitchener, among others, and is a part of the larger international organization of the Red Knights, a motorcycle club for firefighters to get together with their motorcycles.

It includes about 300 chapters worldwide and some 9,000 members.

Police traced the horse to an address on Arthur Street North.

I don’t think I could give a tip as I am sort of a beginner myself; I just started playing last year. I guess I would say to just hit low and hard, and to try hard.

How do you think you'll do at the finals this weekend?

It’s going to be a challenge for sure, but it will be a lot of fun under the lights at St. Davids.

Instead, the transit authority will introduce the service gradually, expanding as ridership numbers warrant such a move.

the agency responsible for the provincial transit service. “It’s the first stage of the plan, and we have plans for further development down the road.”

McCuaig expects two trains to depart between 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. from the Via Rail station on Victoria Street North in downtown Kitchener. The trains are expected to return between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

“There was a similar service in the '90s to Guelph and it was cancelled because of low ridership numbers, but I think what we’re going to see this time is that there is a lot of pent-up demand,”

said Kathleen Wynne, Minister of Transportation. “Not just from those communities where there will be stations, but from the communities surrounding those areas, so Woolwich will fall into that.”

Trains will take just under two hours to travel the 100 kilometres to Toronto’s Union Station, their speed constrained by restrictions on the privatelyowned tracks. Each train will consist of 12 cars with room for as many as 1,400 riders.

And for transit officials, this announcement is exactly that, an introductory step.

“What we’re doing at this point is launching the first step of service and then subject to the ridership we experience and subject to the availability of funding, we will be looking

at how we can provide more service in the future,” said McCuaig.

“We do have an approved plan for a station in Breslau, but we don’t have a specific plan to construct that at this point in time.”

A Greenhouse Road, Breslau location has been tapped as the site for a park-and-ride train station. The project would have seen the

construction of a small station and parking for 700 cars (with room for an additional 350) on land running along the existing CN/GoderichExeter Railway tracks running south of Hwy. 7.

In Wilmot Township, a layover facility is also on hold. Instead, trains will park overnight in west Kitchener rather than at a permanent fa-

cility.

Only time will tell if and when an expansion will go ahead. But looking at the numbers that they have already tallied, planners are optimistic that the service will be well received.

More emphasis on residents in gravel debates

dds are this wasn’t how the departing Woolwich councillors planned to leave office. But by opting to deal with the Kuntz gravel pit application, they courted the displeasure on display in council chambers Tuesday night.

Deferring the problem to the next council would have been the easy thing to do. It might even have been the proper thing to do, given that the new council will have to deal with this and other gravel pit issues.

And, as many of the residents who spoke at this week’s meeting noted, the recent municipal election was in essence a referendum on gravel pits.

At any rate, council did vote on the zone change application. And it did give its approval, drawing public disapproval in return.

Residents have every right to be concerned, which is the reason behind the many snide comments and

even more vitriolic statements that came from the crowd as councillors deliberated the issue.

Yes, the township did impose far more conditions on this pit than has been the case in the past, here and elsewhere. A sunset clause is particularly helpful, a rare definitive endpoint we hope stands up.

This pit is much smaller in scale than two others proposed for the area. Those will prove even more contentious when they finally appear before council to be judged.

It’s with those in mind that residents are uneasy, perhaps seeing this week’s decision as opening the floodgates.

Of course, the Kuntz application will have to be reviewed by the new council, which may or may not reverse the decision. If it does go ahead, it behooves the township to provide strict monitoring of the

It’s on that point, however, that the imbalance of power between municipalities, where gravel pits are often imposed, and the provincial agencies that ultimately make the rulings without regards to the consequences.

Municipalities try to block or at least temper gravel pits. The province steamrolls over local rights and concerns, leaving communities to deal with all the negative impacts.

pits is likely to lead to a hearing before the OMB, which has a track record of ignoring local decisions in favour of developers.

The poor provincial record of respecting local wishes is magnified in the case of gravel pits, where the Aggregate Resources Act is practically a cudgel, and the Ministry of Natural Resources seen as a defender of operators, not Ontarians.

Of course, we do need gravel, and it does have to come from somewhere. Because of its geography, this stretch of the province is rife with aggregate, as witnessed by the numerous pits already in operation.

If every application for an extraction licence was turned down, we’d have to find alternative sources for an essential material.

Clearly, then, we need to find some balance. Hint: it doesn’t involve residential areas.

Burma is not ready for its "Mandela moment" P

eople love historical analogies, so it’s easy to think of Aung San Suu Kyi’s release from house arrest last weekend as Burma’s “Mandela moment.” When Nelson Mandela was freed from 27 years of imprisonment in 1990, it marked the start of a process that saw the negotiated end of the apartheid regime and genuinely free elections in only four years. Maybe that sort of thing will now happen in Burma too.

That would be nice, but it would be unwise to bet the farm on it. “The Lady,” as everybody in Burma calls her, has the same combination of saintly forbearance and tough political realism that enabled Nelson Mandela to lead the transition to democracy so successfully in South Africa, but her situation is very different.

Mandela emerged from prison to assume the leadership of a powerful, disciplined mass movement, whereas Suu Kyi must start by picking up the pieces of a party that has split and lost focus during her seven years of house arrest. Its leaders are almost all elderly men, and there is no younger generation of leaders in sight.

South Africa was utterly isolated politically, and its economy was crumbling under the impact of sanctions.

The Burmese regime has diplomatic relations with its trading partners in Southeast Asia and a very powerful supporter in China. Burmese living standards are dramatically lower than those in neighbouring countries due to 40 years of corrupt and incompetent military rule, but the economy is growing.

And the most important difference: when South Africa’s President F.W. de Klerk freed Mandela in 1990, he al-

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER ready knew that the apartheid regime was doomed. He wanted to negotiate a non-violent transition to a democratic system that would preserve a place for South Africa’s white minority, and Mandela was the best negotiating partner he could hope for.

The regime that has just released Aung San Suu Kyi, by contrast, does not think it has lost, and a transition to a genuinely democratic system is the last thing on its mind. It has just finished an elaborate charade of elections (nine-tenths of the candidates were government-backed) under a new constitution (one-quarter of the parliamentary seats are reserved for the armed forces). It already has all the democracy it wants.

Why did Burma’s military rulers even bother to construct a pseudo-democratic facade like this? After all, their power really rests on their willingness, demonstrated again only three years ago, to kill unarmed civilian protesters in the streets. They don’t care about being loved, so long as they are feared.

But they are as concerned about preserving the country’s independence as any other Burmese, and that makes it desirable to end Western sanctions against the regime. They are hugely dependent on China as an investor and a market for their raw materials, and that is not a comfortable position for any Burmese to be in.

“When China spits, Burma swims,”

says the old proverb. If Aung Sang Suu Kyi can persuade the Western powers to end sanctions against Burma – and she has already hinted that she will help – then the regime can use better relations with the West to counterbalance China’s overweening influence in the country.

Obviously, the regime is betting that it can use “The Lady” in ending sanctions without risking its own hold on power, and perhaps it is right. She faces a hard task in rebuilding her party, which split over the question of whether to participate in the recent bogus election. Even if she succeeds, the generals can always arrest her again and lock her away for as many years as they like. Who would stop them? But they could still lose their bet.

The citation for Aung San Suu Kyi’s Nobel Prize in 1991 called her a shining example of “the power of the powerless,” and that power is real. It could be seen in the adoring crowds who came out to see her when she was freed: after seven years of invisibility, her appeal to two generations of Burmese who have lived under the boots of the military regime all their lives is undimmed.

Like Nelson Mandela in apartheid South Africa, or Vaclav Havel in Communist Czechoslovakia, or Mohandas Gandhi in colonial India, she is a realist about power and fear. “People have been saying I know nothing of Burmese politics,” she said when she was first drawn into politics during the non-violent protest movement of 1988. “The trouble is, I know too much.” And the 1988 protests were duly drowned in blood.

Figures from U.S.-based Zipcar, for instance, show 90 per cent of those who joined drove 8,800 kilometres or less per year. That, the group says, adds up to more than 121 million litres of crude oil left in the ground.

Think of it as a bridge to a future where there are fewer cars on the road at any given time, a future all municipalities are pushing for.

A future that’s at the heart of the region’s misguided light rail transit plan. We have neither the density nor the desire to forego our cars – they’re just too convenient. Obviously, carsharing works better in higher density centres – places where you can more easily do without a car of your own – but it is catching on in the region.

Starting with a couple of vehicles in 1998, Grand River CarShare now has a dozen in K-W and Cambridge.

An expansion into Hamilton last year added three more to the fleet, with demand already prompting the need for one or two more, says Piggott.

With 400 members at this point, the organization is not having a huge impact on the region’s traffic.

But it’s growing. Adding another 40 or 60 members in Elmira – enough to support two or three cars there – would be another step. A small one, but, more importantly, an example of how low-cost, incremental growth can be beneficial in transportation policy.

It was especially interesting, after our recent municipal election, to listen to resident after resident objecting to the zoning amendment and then to have council vote 3-to-1 in favor of the zone change.

I must congratulate Murray Martin for maintaining his commitment to do the “right thing” and vote against the zoning amendment.

I did some research, after listening to all the resident’s objections, and discovered in the Municipal Act (Ontario), “Section 224. It is the role of council, (a) to represent the public and to consider the well-being and interests of the municipality”.

I fail to see how council applied Section 224a after listening to all the residents’ objections.

Davies Snyder sees this community-wide initiative as a keystone project, an opportunity to achieve a number of goals. These include understanding current strengths, identifying emerging strengths, and bringing businesses and residents together to talk about what successful economic development looks like now and in the future.

“The focus groups are going to provide the township with a very accurate and real picture of the challenges they deal with,” she said. “They can tell us what they see as Woolwich’s strengths, what they see as opportunities,

and things like that. They will give us information on the types of initiatives and projects that would help strengthen their business and be more successful.”

A stakeholder committee consisting of representatives from all economic sectors in the township has been formed and will meet during the course of the project to provide input and direction.

The group is made up of a number of volunteers from the community and various industries.

“I am so thrilled with the group of people who have volunteered to be a part of it. The diversity gives me a lot of hope that what we develop will really suit

Woolwich because so many people are involved.”

The exciting aspect of this project, said Davies Snyder, is the opportunity for community residents to talk to township staff in a way they haven’t before, allowing staff to gain a better understanding of the wants and needs of residents in real time.

“The people in the groups will be seeing things that we don’t, because they are in the business,” she explained.

“They are the eyes and ears on the ground. They are the people that are involved in the economy and what we are trying to do is develop a structure that will support them.”

Although response has been good, Davies Snyder admits the township could still use more participants to ensure they get the best results.

Livestock project gives window into the future I

t’s pretty clear we’re headed towards a world of more livestock, not less. Trends show that as nations develop, their appetite for animal protein increases. And there’s no question developing nations have a growing middle class that can afford more animal protein.

Developed nations (such as ours) ignore this trend at their peril, and everyone else’s. We know a lot about animal agriculture – genetics, feed, welfare, health, marketing, processing – and we can be helpful in making sure livestock production grows in an effective, efficient way that combines environmental sensitivities, the animal’s needs, and local demand.

For example, the University of Guelph, already recognized as a global leader in detecting and controlling infectious disease, opened a new pathobiology and animal health laboratory building earlier this fall. The $62-million, four-storey, 126,000-square-foot hub is designed to investigate diseases and solve animal and public health problems. Guelph is regularly called on to address international incidents, or rise to challenges that leave others behind.

Many other less glamourous but vital challenges exist as well, such as issues involving soil, feed and water sources for livestock. If any of these fundamentals go awry,

Canadians know livestock. And we know people everywhere look to Canada for advice and direction for their herds.

That expertise is what gives pertinence and credence to a proposed Livestock Hall of Excellence at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. The hall project, unveiled last week as the Royal was winding down for another year, stands to offer up a great location for dairy and beef producers as well as international visitors to view – and buy – the finest in Canadian genetics.

The cattle-buying exercise at the Royal is wide open, although not well understood by members of the public … even though it happens right under their nose. It’s not discernible because Toronto is such an ethnic melting pot. At the Royal, seeing a livestock owner speaking at a stall with someone from another culture is not unusual.

And maybe that trait helps make cattle-buying visitors feel comfortable at the Royal. Sure, it’s the championship animals that make them flock here. But something keeps them coming back. Amidst the Royal’s normal bustle, it hosted 4,200 cattle buyers from 65 countries last year (this year’s figures aren’t in yet). That’s more cattle buyers than the entire population of Elora. I guess the hot apple dumplings, dog sport shows and authentic Canadian leather belts from Hide And Seek are only part of the draw.

Anyway, these visitors are expanding their herds, which is why they attend. So why not help them do it with Canadian stock? That’s what the new hall of excellence will promote, with the space and flexibility to accommodate the Royal’s beef and dairy shows, along

with new communication technology such as webcasting to promote the shows to an even wider audience: those who can’t attend.

Organizers say it will remove the competition between livestock and horse shows, and give the livestock shows a chance to be promoted equally … although you have to wonder how they’ll make livestock shows pack ’em in likes horses do.

Maybe they’ll promote championship cattle as a prelude to the way the world will eat.

In any event, organizers are committed to the project. They’re on a fundraising mission for it now.

Says agricultural marketer Len Kahn of Guelph, who’s helping promote the project: “The new hall will help the Royal consolidate its position as one of the truly great international cattle showcases.”

That should draw a crowd.

“The bar means that he has done something above and beyond that,” said Chuck Myers, who is responsible for the awards recognition for North Waterloo, and forwards all nominations to the council for voting. “He’s already received the Silver Acorn, and this bar would justify a second.”

Brian Soehner has dedicated more than 40 years of his life to the organization, and last week he was recognized for that service with a bar for the Silver Acorn award he won back in 1997.

“It was certainly a very high honour that I don’t deserve,” Soehner said with a laugh. “Only a few people get it in Canada per year, and it was incredible.”

At the ceremony Nov. 10, Soehner was caught completely by surprise. The Venturers group that he leads in Elmira is currently preparing a Santa Clause parade float, and Soehner was not dressed for an awards presentation.

“We were painting, so I didn’t even have my uniform on.

I was prepared to get paint on me, not win an award,” he said.

The Silver Acorn is one of the highest awards given to Scout leaders. It is a nationally-recognized award that re signifies the recipient has made MORE ACCOLADES Elmira Scouting’s Brian an outstanding Soehner was surprised with a new award last week.

He began as a Cub back in the 1960s and moved up through the Scouts system throughout the 1970s and the 1980s, culminating as the president of the region for three years from 1998 to 2001. He had 11 territories under his jurisdiction, from Tobermory and Goderich, over to Stratford, and even as far as Orangeville and Collingwood.

“It was a lot to handle,” he said.

He is now the leader of Elmira’s Venturer troop, as well as the commissioner of the board of directors for the 1st Elmira Scout troop. For more than 20 years, Soehner has been involved as a member with the “Friends of Killarney Park” volunteer support group for Killarney Provincial Park, and he currently serves as the president of that group as well. He originally took a group of Venturers there in 1978, and has returned every year since.

“The current Venturer company has developed a strong association with Killarney, partially as a result of Brian’s influence, and has completed several volunteer projects including building portage bridges in the interior,” said Myers.

During his years with Elmira Scouting, Soehner has taken members to seven world Scout jamborees, as well as 10 Canadian and provincial jam-

ting borees.

He not only arranged to be the leader and to accompany the youth, but he actively promoted the jamborees and helped arrange and participate in the fund raising, said Myers.

This isn’t Soehner’s first Scouting award, either. Aside from the Silver Acorn that was awarded to him in 1997, Soehner was also the recipient of The Medal of Merit back in 1982, which recognizes especially good service to Scouting.

“He’s got an interest in the kids and their welfare, and no one would stick around in what is a sometimes thankless and low-paying job for that length of time if they weren’t enjoying it and get-

somesome thing out of it,” explained Ron Cressman, the former leader of the Rover troop in Elmira who is also on the executive of the 1st Elmira Scout troop, and has also been involved in Scouting off and on for about 30 years.

“He’s certainly ‘Mr. Scout Scouting’ in Elmira. He’s been around forever,” Cressman laughed.

For Soehner, though, it isn’t about the accolades and the awards. For him it always comes back to the kids, and making sure that Scouting in Elmira is on solid footing. He says Scouting saw a steep decline in the late ‘90s, but that it is once again on the rise.

A fine balance needed when souping up your day S

ometimes cooking is all about taking just a few ingredients and treating them with care. A great chef once said that soup is actually one of the hardest dishes to make: every bite or sip really tastes the same, and so the flavours must be somewhat addictive to enjoy eating hot spoonful after hot spoonful.

There is a fine balance that must be created between these few ingredients, a balance between the salt in the dish, the sweetness of the vegetables and the ‘punch’ created by the addition of herbs and spices.

We also talk about ‘roundness’ or ‘mouth-feel:’ that creaminess created by the addition of cream or butter as well as by pureeing a soup. In today’s soup, we have used coconut milk instead of cream.

In this week’s surprisingly vegan seasonal soup we start with a fresh vegetable stock.

Place all ingredients in a pot; cover with cold water (about 8-10 cups); Bring to a boil, then turn down to a simmer; Simmer for 30 minutes and then strain into a container; use immediately or cool and refrigerate for up to three days or freeze. (Feel free to add additional vegetable scraps that you may have in your fridge.)

Vegetable Stock >>2 large onions, rough chopped >>2 carrots, peeled and rough chopped >>2 celery, rough chopped >>1 leek, rough chopped >>a few mushrooms >>1 tomato, chopped >>1 bay leaf

Roast Butternut Squash >>4-5 cups of largely chopped peeled butternut squash

>>1-1/2 tbsp olive oil good pinch of kosher salt Heat oven to 425°F; Place squash on a baking tray; toss with olive oil and salt; roast for 30-45 minutes or until edges begin to brown.

Next, put the soup together:

>>handful of fresh herb sprigs such as parsley, thyme and rosemary

>>1 tsp whole peppercorns

>>2 tbsp olive oil >>1 large onion, finely chopped >>1 clove garlic, minced >>1/4 cup dry white wine >>4-5 cups roasted squash >>8 cups fresh vegetable stock >>1 can coconut milk >>Salt and pepper, to taste

Preparing for Santa’s big day

Heat oil in soup pot over medium heat and add onions and cook until softened. Add minced garlic and cook 1-2 minutes more; Deglaze with white wine, simmer for 1-2 minutes to burn off alcohol; Add squash and vegetable stock.

Bring to a boil and simmer 10-15 minutes; Add coconut milk; Ladle into blender, in batches, and blend until smooth. Add enough water to achieve desired consistency; Reheat in clean pot; Salt and pepper to taste.

Notes: Add salt as you go, a little salt with each addition to the pot creates a flavourful finished product.

Finished soup should be thick and creamy tasting. When blending the soup, do not add all of the liquid at first. You can add liquid to pureed soup but you cannot take it away.

It’s recovered so much, in fact, that the lowest level of Scouting – Beavers – has too many children and not enough parents to lead, he says.

“We’ve got a fantastic group of Cub leaders and Scout leaders and Venturer leaders,

but we’re just short at the bottom end, and of course it’s the bottom end we need to protect because if the Beavers have fun they will stay with it all the way up to Venturers.”

His dedication to the Scouting movement is certainly one of the reasons why he was awarded a bar for the Silver Acorn. Just last month, four of his Venturers were also awarded for their work and dedication. And much of the credit lies with Soehner, an Elmira-native who has seen hundreds – if not thousands – of young boys make their way through the ranks of the 1st Elmira troop.

“I was a Cub and a Scout for seven years, and I’ve been a leader for over 40 years,” said Soehner as he reflects on his lifetime with the organization.

“Elmira Scouting is going to be 100 years old in 2012, so I guess I’ve been involved for about half of it,” he laughed.

And although the season is just nearing its halfway point, head coach Geoff Haddaway concedes that many games from this point forward will have a playoff feel to them as teams jockey for position in the standings.

The junior squad finished the regular season with an outstanding 10-2 record, but due to the high level of basketball in the region this year that record was only good for fifth in their division behind Bluevale Collegiate who finished 12-0, Jacob Hespeler at 11-1, and Preston High school and Waterloo-Oxford, who also finished at 10-2. WaterlooOxford beat EDSS earlier in the season and Preston beat Waterloo-Oxford, which meant EDSS finished fifth in the standings.

Following the junior squad’s 33-0 victory over Galt Collegiate, and the senior Lancers’ 43-23 win over Southwood on Tuesday afternoon in front of a cold but happy crowd at EDSS, they moved on to play for the championship at St. David Catholic school in Waterloo on Friday.

The juniors kick off at 5 p.m. and the seniors play at 7 p.m.

“It’s been a while since Elmira has had a chance to play for a championship,” said junior coach Dave Munroe following Tuesday’s victory. “The guys are excited to play under the lights at St. David’s.”

The juniors finished with a 2-5 record, but have been hot throughout their first two games of the playoffs and will be playing against a much tougher team from Eastwood

Of whistlers, bucks and bows

O

ver the last few days on lakes all around here, the goldeneye ducks have arrived. Duck hunters like me know them as whistlers, because of the whistling sound that their wings make as the fly by – at least, that’s the common reason given. Personally, I think it has more to do with the sound that hunters make when these fast moving birds buzz the decoys and cause scalding hot coffee to be spilled.

In either case, the nickname is absolutely appropriate. Whistlers have a way of getting your attention.

Whistlers, buffleheads, hooded mergansers, blacks and big flocks of mallards are among the last ducks we’ll see before winter sets in. And, if I’m any example at all, the cold-weather clothing industry owes them big time.

Because of these birds, I have invested in enough heavy hunting clothing to comfortably endure another ice age. This is important, since almost all lateseason hunting is on big water.

But it also gives the ducks a decided advantage. After all, it’s hard to swing a shotgun when you look like the Michelin Tire Man. The whistlers, I’m certain, know this.

Okay, enough of this charade.

It’s the day after the rifle season for deer and I’m not talking about it at all. This means, as every deer hunter out there knows, I didn’t fill a tag. If I did, we wouldn’t be talking about ducks, right?

I’ll admit it. It was a lousy rifle season for me. Don’t get me wrong; I saw a couple of great bucks. But it’s hard getting a shot at them when you are driving by at 80 kilometres an hour and your rifle is in the gun locker at home. So I still have this tag.

The truth is that my rifle season this year went to hell in a hand basket for a whole lot of

reasons I’d rather not discuss.

And, as a result, I didn’t hunt nearly as much as I normally do.

The good part is that the archery season is upon us and the rut is on. So I’m thinking that there is still time to make things right.

For those who don’t know, the rut is when bucks decide that they should stop loafing, eating and acting rational. In place of their normal, wary lifestyle, they lose all caution and dignity, fight, and do their best to breed.

It’s the whitetail equivalent of spring break – only I believe they can remember it when it’s over.

The point is that they’re on the hunt for receptive does, which means that, like most males in this position, they’re not paying attention to the world around them. In past years, I’ve had bucks in rutting mode just about walk within touching distance, nose to the ground and oblivious that I was even there. I’m hoping for a replay this year.

So sometime today, I’ll go out, find a likely spot to set up a stand and get back into regular hunting mode. Hey, the pressures are fading, the woods are empty, the bucks are cruising and virtually anything can happen.

But sometime during that hunt, as I sit there in a tree stand not far from the lake, I’ll be startled by whistlers as they pass high overhead. Only this time, I’ll try not to spill my coffee. After all, even a rutting buck would pay attention to that kind of whistle.

Long layoff not overly evident as team clicks for easy 6-1 win; team in St. George Saturday

T

he Wellesley Apple Jacks emerged from their 11-day layoff to post an impressive 6-1 victory over the lowly Port Dover Sailors last Sunday night.

The Jacks – who last saw action in their 4-3 overtime victory over Hagersville back on Nov. 3 – scored six unanswered goals and went 3 for 6 on the powerplay in their return to the ice.

“We played pretty well considering we hadn’t played since the third,” said head coach Kevin Fitzpatrick. “We had a lot of energy, and we played at a fast and hard pace, but we showed a lot of rust too.”

Fortunately the Jacks shook off that rust against a Pt. Dover team that came into the game with an ugly 0-12-1 record. The Sailors showed some jump early, though, as they scored the first goal of the game just 2:53 into the first on a bit of a lucky bounce.

“The first goal was actually scored from centre ice,” explained Fitzpatrick. “It was going wide, and I don’t know what it hit, but it bounced and it bounced again and changed directions two different times. It must have hit a rut or something because it was going three feet wide.”

The Jacks didn’t let that early goal affect them, though, potting two in rapid succession to erase the bad goal. Stephen Lewtas scored his fifth of the year at 8:21 on the powerplay, from Corey Way and Michael Forster.

Just 21 seconds later, Way gave the Jacks the lead for good with his eighth of the year at 8:42 from Forster and Shawn Fitzpatrick.

“We went out and scored a couple quick goals and controlled much of the play,” said coach Fitzpatrick, whose team held a 40-27 shot advantage by the end of the game.

Their strong play continued into the second with three more unan-

swered goals; Spencer Aspden at 7:05 from Eric Parr, Forster from Way and Fitzpatrick at 13:29 on the powerplay, and Parr with an unassisted goal at 19:12.

In the third, Josh Herd closed out the scoring on the powerplay from Parr and Rob Hinschberger at 13:48.

The last five minutes of the game, however, got rough as referees assessed 28 minutes of penalties to both teams, including a game misconduct to Lewtas for fighting, and the Sailors’ Kyle Jansen for abuse of official at 14:55.

“It’s kind of frustrating, we had the game in hand with about five minutes to go and they drew us into some bad penalties, which really hasn’t happened all year,” explained Fitzpatrick, whose team has been shorthanded 77 times this year, the third-fewest in the league.

The win was the Jacks eighth of the year, already surpassing last seasons total of seven. They are also only two points behind their total for last year. Fitzpatrick says that the enormous turnover from last year’s squad – including 15 new players – has changed the culture of the dressing room and led to better results on the ice and in the standings.

“We’ve got good leadership, and this team really has fun. You can see it in the dressing room before the games and after the games. It’s a different team," said the coach.

“Last year’s team, with all the problems we had, we never were healthy. The only luck we had was bad luck all year. It wasn’t that they weren’t working, it was just one of those years.”

The Jacks will make the drive down to St. George tonight (Saturday) to take on the Dukes at 7:30, and their next home game is next Saturday, Nov. 27, in a rematch against the Sailors. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

The second period was even more lopsided than the first, as Guelph outshot the Kings 18-8 in the frame. Pfeffer tied the game at two with his fourth goal of the season at 4:31 from Brady Campbell and Baleshta, but Guelph retook the lead with only 2:36 remaining in the period, going back into the room up 3-2.

Yet it seems that all season the third has been the Kings’ best period, and it was again versus Guelph.

Campbell scored a quick goal to start the frame, just 4:01 in, to tie it up at three and shifted the momentum of the game in Elmira’s favour.

Baleshta put the Kings ahead with the team’s third powerplay goal of the night at 6:37 from Colton Wolfe-Sabo, and captain Josh Woolley iced the game at 16:55 with his fourth of the season from Brennon Pearce and Jarred Parent.

thought we played better, and that’s pretty motivating,” noted Haddaway. “Guelph came into our rink and handed it to us (a 5-2 loss back on Sept. 19), so here was chance for us to get some redemption for that game.”

The next night the Kings played a rare match against the Stoney Creek Warriors, their first time the two have met since the formation of the GOJHL back in 2007.

The Kings held the advantage throughout most of the game, outshooting the Warriors 39-28, but couldn’t crack goaltender Matt Sagrott as they fell 2-1.

That isn’t to say the Kings didn’t get their chances in the offensive zone. On the second shift of the game newly-acquired forward Ryan Clarkson had a glorious chance to put the home team ahead, but

the puck sat on the goal line and the Warrior keeper managed to fall on it in time.

“I think if that goes in, it’s a game that we probably win,” said Haddaway. Other players had chances through the game as well. Altogether, the team had six breakaways against the Warriors’ goaltender, but couldn’t beat him.

Several shots went wide, and others were relatively easy saves. Woolley had consecutive shorthanded breakaways at one point in the game, but couldn’t convert either.

“If you get six breakaways in a hockey game, I would say you have to win the vast majority of the hockey games,” explained Haddaway. “We didn’t capitalize on those chances, and if you play with fire long enough, you’re going to get burned.”

Despite their recent slump, Haddaway is confident that the life they showed against Guelph, and their strong play against the Warriors is an indication that they’re going to break out and resume their winning ways.

The coach is also happy with the play of forward Ryan Clarkson, who the Kings acquired from Kitchener last week. He has four points in three games with the Kings, and should help their offence as they head towards the playoffs. The 19-year-old had 27 goals for the Dutchmen last season as a rookie, and six thus far this season.

“We like our team, but if we can add to it and make it better, we will,” Haddaway said of the team’s acquisition. “We have great chemistry in our room, however we also have a mandate to get better and put the best team on the ice that we can. We’re very excited to have him, he’s fit exceptionally well in the dressing room.”

The Kings have another tough weekend ahead of them as they play three games in three nights. After a Friday night match in Owen Sounds, the team returns home Saturday to take on the Waterloo Siskins at 7 p.m., then face the Cambridge Winter Hawks Sunday at the WMC, also at 7 p.m.

But a hardfought 21-7 win over K i t c h e n e r- Wa t e rl o o Collegiate last Wednesday, followed by their relatively easy victory over Southwood on Tuesday, has the team’s confidence riding high.

“The last three weeks we’ve played some awesome football,” said senior head coach Steve Karn, who attributed their overall success this season to the team being more dedicated to showing up for practice than ever before.

The senior squad will play against Jacob Hespeler, who finished just ahead of the Lancers in the standings. For Karn, who has been with the program since it began six years ago, it is sweet to finally make it to the championship game.

“It will be the first time Elmira has played for a B championship.

The fifth-year guys who have been a part of the program since it started are excited too.”

Overall they had a tournament record of 17-3, he said.

“We knew we had a strong team coming into the year, but unfortunately we ran into some injury problems in the middle of the season, so that kind of affected our league record,” noted Carter, saying that their lower placement in the standings meant they had to play some tougher teams in the playoffs.

The senior girls won their qualifying round matchup against Southwood on Nov. 9, 40-25, but lost in the quarterfinals last Thursday to Waterloo Collegiate, 65-37.

The team did manage to qualify for CWOSSA this weekend though, thanks to their win over Southwood, and it is the second year for many of the girls at the championship.

“Last year that we qualified, we weren’t expecting to have a lot of success, we were just introducing most of the girls to CWOSSA and just getting their feet wet,” explained Carter. “We’re hoping to have a little more success this year.”

CWOSSA games start Friday and continue Saturday at Jacob Hespeler in Cambridge.

“We had such a great league this year; there were so many good teams,” said coach Dale Roberts.

In the playoffs, the juniors beat Glenview Park 53-20 to move past the WCSSAA playoff qualifiers, but stumbled in the quarterfinals. The team lost to Waterloo-Oxford 51-33 Nov. 11, eliminating them from any chance of competing in CWOSSA this weekend.

“It’s good for girl’s basketball and the quality of the ball was impressive, but

we had to be that one notch out,” said Roberts.

Nine of the 13 players on the team were Grade 10s, meaning they will move on to senior ball next season.

Roberts, however, isn’t too concerned.

“The four Grade 9s we had on the team improved all season and they should be back, and the word from the feeder schools is that there are some stars out there, so hopefully we will be OK.” The senior girls finished up a rather disappointing season at 6-6, and head coach Brian Carter says that inju-

TOWNSHIP SIGN BY-LAW 67-92 The Township of Woolwich Enforcement staff would like to remind you of the Township’s Sign By-law to control and regulate signs in the Township.

1. An accessory sign (a sign advertising the business at the property) may be placed on your own property.

SPARE CROSSING GUARDS URGENTLY NEEDED IN ELMIRA The Township of Woolwich requires people to occasionally fill in as spare Crossing Guards at the four supervised school crossings in Elmira. Spare guards work on an as-needed basis to cover school crossings during absences of the regular Crossing Guard. Spares usually get advance notice of requests and may decline work if they are not available to cover. All training and equipment is provided. Ideal candidates are responsible and community-minded with a flexible schedule and their own transportation. The rate of pay is $9.94 per 30-minute shift. INFORMATION ABOUT THE DISCHARGE OF FIREARMS IN THE TOWNSHIP OF WOOLWICH Township of Woolwich By-law No. 108-2004 regulates the discharge of guns or other firearms, including air-guns, spring-guns, cross-bows, long-bows or any other weapon within the Township.

• All hunters must carry written permission of the property owner.

• No recreational hunting is permitted within 200 metres (656 feet) of a residential settlement boundary!

FINE OF $300 FOR PARKING IN A DESIGNATED ACCESSIBLE PARKING SPACE WITHOUT MTO PERMIT TAKE NOTICE that the Township of Woolwich monitors designated accessible parking spaces to ensure that they are used by vehicles displaying an Accessible Parking Permit (APP) issued by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). The individual to whom the permit is issued must be using the vehicle and the permit must be visibly displayed on the dashboard or sun visor when the vehicle is parked in the designated accessible parking space. The permit holder may use the permit in any vehicle in which they are travelling. There is no fee for an APP. The fine for parking a vehicle in an accessible parking space without an MTO permit is $300.

Textisms may seem hip, streamlined, clever, but they’re hardly new, says David Crystal in A Little Book of Language.

This surprises people, but such forms as “u” for “you” and “gr8” for “great” weren’t just created for mobile phones but were actually used over 200 years ago! They were called “rebuses” (pronounced “reebuses”) and were a popular kind of puzzle. Queen Victoria used to play rebus games. So did Lewis Carroll.

Grace passed away peacefully at 11:45 pm, on Sunday, October 31, 2010 at the age of 11, on Halloween, her favourite day.

Grace is survived by her loving parents, Julie and John and her cherished sister Hannah, beloved grandparents Norm and Cathy Murphy (nee Brown) and Opa and Oma, Bill and Irene Wynen (nee Vandenhoff) all of Cambridge as well as many well loved cousins, Aunts and Uncles.

Grace made many friends while attending preschool at The Children’s Place in Conestogo. She attended Conestogo Public School, grade 6. Grace enjoyed dance and musical theatre at Encore Dance in Elmira and was looking forward to being a part of the Royal City Musical Productions performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Those who knew Grace knew her great spirit, passion for life and compassion for others. She delighted in her friends and relationships with other people. She was with us briefly, but she left her mark on all who she met.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Grace with her family during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Thursday, November 18, 2010 from 7-9 p.m and Friday, November 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church, 173 Lourdes Street West, Waterloo on Saturday, November 20 at 10am, the Rev. Cornelius J. O’Mahoney as Celebrant. Cremation has taken place.
