ouncillors in Wellesley Township lent their ears to another group of impassioned Schweitzer Crescent residents this week, this time present at the meeting to proclaim their support of the development of the Bast Bush Trail, as the debate surrounding the proposed location heated up even further.

On Sept 7, some 20 residents of Schweitzer Crescent in Wellesley Village appeared at council to express their dissatisfaction with the possible placement of a new trail, which was in the development stages by the Wellesley Trail Association (WTA). After a petition was presented and a public meeting held the following evening, the WTA announced that they would rework their plan for the route of the new trail.

The Elmira Bio Fuel Citizen’s Committee has been holding weekly strategy meetings at the Woolwich Memorial Centre. On Wednesday night, more than 80 people showed up to hear Bio-En Power Inc. president Chuck Martin’s take on the proposal.

Opponents also vented their concerns about potential truck traffic and odour problems related to the project.

For some in attendance Wednesday night, the whole issue is reminiscent of past battles over development, including the King/86 power centre and the Tim Hortons restaurant in St. Jacobs.

“It seems to me that we have made a very strong statement that we are anti-development,” said Frey Building Contractors president Bert Frey.

“As a business owner, do I want to be in a place that is resistant to change and development? If that’s the case, I will need to think about relocating and taking about 70 jobs with me.”

While not making any decisions about changes to the Bio-En plan, Martin agreed to look over the traffic studies from this past year to help determine the impact of the facility on township roads.

The spirit of cooperation was welcomed by the residents’ committee.

“I don’t think this is a dead-end,” said opposition group leader Dan Holt, “I don’t think that we can’t work together on it, in a cooperative way.”

Bio-En plans to create electricity by converting organic waste into methane to power a generator. Materials such as livestock manure, food waste, used cooking oils and other fats will be fed into anaerobic digester, creating the fuel for the process. The $12-million facility would generate 2.8 megawatts of renewable electricity – enough to power 2,200 homes – and 3.4 mW of heat.

During his presentation he emphasized that the maximum annual output of a plant of this magnitude is 70,000 metric tonnes per year, adding up to an average of 7.5 trucks to be traveling to and from the site each day.

Awards honours Elmira man’s efforts on behalf of the food bank Steve Kannon

raised this week for his past efforts on behalf of the food bank, Dustin Martin is looking ahead to the future of the Halloween food drive he started seven years ago.

Now a student at the University of Waterloo, the Elmira man is eager to keep the CANS project growing, as it has done since he was a 12-year-old with a helpful idea. Citizens Always Need Supper began as a chance for five or six kids who felt as though they were a bit too old to be trick-or-treating

to still go out into the community and do something fun. That goal changed from good times to giving back, and the number of participants grew from six to some 130 kids and adults who took part last year. More than 5,000 pounds of food was collected.

In recognition of the work he put into the project, Martin was presented with the 2009 Outstanding Organization Donor Award from the Food Bank of Waterloo Region and Woolwich Community Services at Tuesday night’s township council meeting.

While gratified by the award, Martin said his goal now is to keep the momentum going.

Away at school in British Columbia last year, he turned over the project to his friend Colton Bauman.

Both older now, they’re searching out some younger kids to take over.

“This year I’ll be helping out with Colton Bauman,” he said of next month’s CANS drive, adding “but we’ll be looking for our replacements to carry on.”

The first pitch will be to the Woodside Bible Fellow-

ship youth group, which has been a big part of the food drive for the last few years, he said.

“It’s kind of become a Woodside youth event. We’ll be taking [the idea] to the youth group – it just makes sense.”

The project may have started out small, with Martin and a few friends, but it’s reached the point where he believes it can take on a life of its own. It’s a youth project, and it needs younger kids to keep it going.

“I’ve been impressed every year – we haven’t slowed down at all,” said Martin.

he last weekend in September is a favourite time of year, and the busiest for many people in the Township of Wellesley. This Saturday (Sept. 25) is the annual Wellesley Apple Butter and Cheese Festival.

The ABC Festival, now running for over a quarter of a century, was formed by members of the Board of Trade and was based on

a combination of the structure of both the Elmira Syrup Festival and the New Hamburg Quilt Auction.

Mixing in a bit of their local flavour, the festival is run solely by volunteers as a way to promote the Wellesley and its major businesses.

“It’s amazing the effect that the ABC Fest has on people,” said event chairman Bob Reid. “People who no longer live in Wellesley will come back to help out

or just to visit. It’s a great reunion for those people who have moved away, or a place to meet new people if you’re new to the area. There is something for everyone.”

Each year the Board of Trade runs a pancake and sausage breakfast, while the Lions Club puts on a chicken barbecue, the Optimists are planning to run a booth with schnitzel on a bun, and the Lutheran churches will be selling apple dumplings.

Mennonite churches will be selling apple fritters, and the ladies slo-pitch will sell sausage on a bun.

Other attractions at the festival include a horseshoe tournament, ongoing street entertainment, and a quilt auction, to name a few.

Wellesley council has approved the extension of the contact of Nancy Maitland, the curator and archivist for the Wellesley Township Heritage and Historical Society, until the end of 2011.

The contract, which was set to expire at the end of October, also increases the number of hours she is paid for each month to 15 from 10. The salary is estimated to be about $4,500, which will be covered from the interest that is accumulating in the Taylor estate fund. If the interest fails to cover those costs, the remainder will be taken from the historical society’s bank account.

The importance of Maitland was made clear by society chair Ron Hackett, who requested the extension of the contract. He stated that people from as far away as Michigan and Florida seek information regarding their families that have originated in Wellesley Township.

> Woolwich defers pay hike decision Facing an election next month, Woolwich council this week deferred a decision on a consultant’s report calling for massive pay hikes for councillors.

Compiled by Listowel-based Ward and Uptigrove Human Resources Solutions, the study says each of the ward councillors should get a 47-per-cent increase to $17,300, while the mayor deserves 25 per cent more, bringing the pay to $29,500.

In a split vote, councillors Mark Bauman and Murray Martin opposed, council agreed to put off a decision until budget deliberations, likely in January.

> Hogweed noxious Giant hogweed, the subject of eradication efforts in the townships over the last few years, is now officially persona non grata in Ontario. Earlier this month, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs announced that it would be amending its Weed Control Act to include giant hogweed as a noxious weed.

The designation is designed to increase awareness of the plant, and to assure its impact will be minimized.

Giant hogweed is a phototoxic plant, meaning its sap can cause severe skin inflammations when exposed to sunlight or UV rays.

Grocery shopping without the paying

a kayak were stolen from the riverbank at the back of a residential property on Herrgott Road near Wallenstein. The canoes were red and the kayak was yellow.

All three boats measured 17 feet in length. The items were valued at $1,745 in total. The investigation is ongoing.

on Blue Heron Court in Elmira called police from his grandfather’s home after his stove caught fire. The boy was making popcorn when the oil in the pan ignited. He ran to the nearby home to call 911.

When firefighters arrived, the fire had been put out. There was little fire damage, but the home was clouded with smoke.

There were no injuries.

The complainant noticed that many members had reported individual clubs missing over the past three weeks. The complainant looked on the website Kijiji and found a number of golf clubs for sale which matched the description of the ones missing. When he matched up the email address given on the website with a profile on Facebook, he discovered the seller to be a member of the CGCC as well. Police are continuing the investigation.

said he believed they were left by the curb with the garbage when he had removed them.

SEPTEMBER 22 > 8:24 AM | An Elmira man

called police after witnessing a grey station wagon slide into the ditch and strike a stop sign at the corner of Church Street and Eldale Road, west of Elmira. The driver of the vehicle then left the scene without reporting the incident.

The man was unable to obtain the vehicle’s license plate, but noted that the vehicle is now damaged on the front passenger side bumper.

The Region of Waterloo was notified about the damaged stop sign.

Aggressor mountain bike was brought into Division 3A after being locked up in front of the Woolwich Township office for more than a week. When police checked the serial number, it was found to have been reported stolen in Peel Region in May. Regional police are working on returning the bike to its owner.

Author reads from One Book selection during Elmira stop James Jackson

he literary tour by Terry Fallis, author of this year’s One Book, One Community selection, made a stop in Elmira Wednesday afternoon. He was at EDSS to answer questions and read excerpts from The Best Laid Plans.

Speaking to some 60 people in the high school’s cafeteria, Fallis also discussed his motivation for writing the book and, his inspiration for the characters.

“Write what you know,” he said, explaining his motivation for writing a book on political satire in Canada – a tough sell, he admits.

Fallis graduated from McMaster University in 1983 with his bachelor degree in engineering, and promptly

was self-published in 2007, winning the 2008 Stephen Leacock Award for humour.

The One Book, One Community program began in 2002 in an effort to promote reading in Waterloo Region, to celebrate and promote Canadian authors and b o o k s and to build a sense of community through the shared experience of reading. Past winners include Jane Urquhart for her book The Stone Carvers, Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon for The 100-Mile Diet, and Lawrence Hill for The Book of Negroes.

“The building was cool to start with,” said Quarry creative director Jay Fournier, who was instrumental in the building’s new look.

“You could tell that underneath all the things that had been added over the years that it just had cool bones and a history and a lot of wear and tear that was kind of beautiful.”

Quarry, established in 1973 as an advertising agency, had called the seven-story Allen Square building in Waterloo home for more than 20 years. The firm made the decision to relocate to the heart of St. Jacobs when its current lease expired and they faced a substantial increase in rent costs.

ing had been divided into retail units – the company breathed new life into a facility that at one time was used to manufacture felt, glue and even Olympia ice resurfacers.

“The history of manufacturing here was

neat. It felt cool to be the first business of our kind in the building,” continued Fournier.

“There were scars and dents and smashes in the floor. It shows that it had once been used to make tangible things – something that we like

to be reminded of when our business doesn’t make necessarily tangible items. We stripped it back to reveal some of that good stuff and we didn’t make any attempts to try and hide it.”

Now that the dust has settled, members of staff at Quarry are unpacking their new offices and getting acquainted with the restaurants, shops and flavour of St. Jacobs.

Fournier said that despite initial apprehension from surrounding business owners, the organization seems to be finding their place quite nicely.

“We feel a lot of privilege to be the next people to occupy this old space. With this design, we wanted to do right by the building and right by the town.

There are a lot of great residents and a lot of great businesses and we are happy to be a part of it.”

Quarry now has offices in St. Jacobs, Toronto, Raleigh, NC, and San Jose, CA.

proper curbing and brick sidewalks, buying equipment for the fire department, renovating the community centre with a new kitchen and air conditioning, renovating the arena and installing new flooring in the dressing room.

Event organizers are hoping for the weather to cooperate, as the antique car and tractor display parade is typically one of the more popular attractions each year, drawing more than 100 vehicles for visitors to watch.

Also, while outside, visitors can check out the regatta of remote-control boats which will run all day on the Wellesley pond, or children’s performer Erick Traplin, who takes the stage at 9:30 a.m.

“We have seen him quite a bit with our grandchildren and he always puts on quite a show,” said Reid.

This year, alongside the traditional fare will be a bit of friendly competition. The three Wellesley Idol finalists were whittled down from six at the Wellesley Fall Fair on Sept. 14. Jessie Elgood, Emma Bender and Maggie Wong will be performing for the title at the ABC Fest, alongside the winner of the People’s Choice Award, voted on at the fair. The competition to decide who’ll claim top spot takes place at the stage by the post office at 1 p.m.

Glasgow Street bridge to close again for repairs Woolwich council approves $267,000 contract to rebuild deck of old steel structure Steve Kannon

losed last year for a couple of months due to emergency repairs, the Glasgow Street bridge in Conestogo will be out of commission for another eight weeks or so starting in mid-October.

The closure will allow for medium-term rehabilitation of the 124-year-old structure.

Some of the stringers will be replaced, a new deck is to be installed using laminated wood, a waterproofing treatment will be applied, followed by a new tar-

and-chip surface.

Meeting Tuesday night, Woolwich councillors awarded a $267,000 contract to Looby Builders of Dublin, Ont. to carry out the work, expected to get underway Oct. 12.

Dan Kennaley, the township’s director of engineering and planning, said the project would take about two months to complete, with the bridge reopening by mid-December.

While the bridge would be structurally sound at that point, the final work – including the waterproofing and re-

“They [the trail’s opposition group] went to council as an alliance of homeowners on our street but they didn’t actually invite most of the residents on our street,” said Schweitzer Crescent resident Jeff Ohlhausen.

“They are forming a ‘homeowners’ alliance’ and speaking on our behalf without asking the homeowners first.”

Tuesday night’s meeting saw a presentation from Molesworth Street resident Jillian Koehle, who reiterated and elaborated on some of the points brought up at the previous meeting.

“The neighbourhood consists of a lot of young families with young children, and the presence of a trail brings up a lot of concerns for us,” she explained. “There are concerns regarding increased traffic and parking, dogs off leashes, drug paraphernalia, cigarette butts, alcohol and even further – possible rapes to female trail users and possible child abduction.”

Neighbour Paul Zepf echoed Koehle’s assessment, describing in detail his thoughts on the additional potential dangers that might arise.

“The question is not ‘are trails good for Wellesley?” he noted, “It is ‘Is this trail, at this time, at this location good for the community or the common good?’”

Ohlhausen expressed that his understanding of the trails, and what he believed to be the understanding of the majority of the township, was just the opposite; that the addition of a walking trail to the area would bring tourism and assist with the building of a strong, healthy community.

“I find it hard to listen to scare tactics about trails as though there is some kind of trail epidemic breaking out across North America where crime is going to run rampant,” he said.

“This is a classic example of a limited few trying to impose their will on the many. This trail plan existed before they [the opposing parties] bought their homes. If you made the mistake of not understanding that, I am sorry for you but you need to do your homework.”

Ultimately, councillors decided to withhold comment until a report can be prepared by township staff.

A new collector road – Millennium Boulevard – proposed for the site could end up encouraging drivers to use Glasgow Street as a bypass for Northfield Drive, Kennaley suggested. That would see more traffic than advisable putting stress on the single-lane bridge.

Noting drivers would find a way to use the route despite such measures, Coun. Mark Bauman suggested Glasgow Street could

be made a one-way road southbound, an idea Kennaley said he’d add to the list while exploring the options.

The bridge is already carrying far more traffic than was intended when it was built in 1886. While the structure has been deemed historically significant, it has no official designation under the Ontario Heritage Act.

hree stretches of Crowsfoot Road will be repaved this fall as Woolwich looks to put off a major reconstruction of the route. The work would bring the poor spots back up to the standard of the rest of the road, which is in good condition for the most part.

“It fits in with the principle of keeping the good roads good,” director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley said at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Agreeing with his assessment, councillors voted to award a $233,000 contract to The Murray Group to carry out the work. The company submitted the lowest of six bids.

The three sections of Crowsfoot Road between Sawmill and Maryhill roads are more prone to wear, largely because there tends to be more water on the road at those locations, he explained.

In backing the plan, Coun. Mark Bauman suggested the township look at creating what $ 25.99 Prime Rib he called maintenance Steaksanshoulders – perhaps

other 18 inches of pavement on the outside of each lane. That would provide additional protection to the edge of the pavement, away from the traffic, while allowing some room for cyclists.

The work, to be completed by the end of October, would have no impact on the Crowsfoot Corner; the intersection is home to an unorthodox convergence of Crowsfoot Road, Katherine Street and Sawmill Road. It’s been under scrutiny because of the number of collisions there, including a 2002 fatality that prompted a Region of Waterloo investigation.

More recently, the region examined the

intersection during a study of the cumulative impact of three gravel pits that would see trucks passing through Crowsfoot Corner. While the region determined no changes would be necessary to accommodate potentially thousands of truck passes each year, the township has reservations about the findings, said Kennaley.

“We aren’t convinced that there aren’t some improvements that could be made to that intersection,” he said in a later interview.

“If there were already concerns prior to the gravel pits, doesn’t the additional traffic from the gravel pits put this over the threshold for improvements?”

Time for Harper to move on from gun registry

M

ost Canadians will be forgiven for wondering what all the fuss was about following this week’s vote on the long-gun registry.

The Conservative government appears hell bent on scrapping the program, but can’t express a rational opinion why they want to do so.

Stephen Harper has had the gun registry in his sights since his days in opposition. Upon becoming prime minister in 2006, he quickly set about angling for its demise. Why? The best we can fathom is that it’s based on libertarian ideology.

There is a natural revulsion, of course, over how the registry came to exist in the first place. The idea was fine – at least to most Canadians – but the execution was anything but. Originally slated to cost about $2 million, the program sucked in more than $1 billion before it was even operational. It was expected to be a

break-even proposition, but operating costs are now $4 million annually. But getting rid of it now would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

The wasteful program should have been scrapped years ago, before taxpayers were gouged for its creation.

But we have it now, and it’s arguably been of some use – murders with long guns dropped to 34 in 2008 from 61 in 1995 when the registry was introduced – and police organizations are in support of it.

Legitimate gun owners, particularly those in rural areas, have chafed at the imposition of yet another layer of paperwork and expense.

Those feelings are not without merit.

There are already measures in place to monitor gun ownership. And, in typical government fashion, the registry has been another bureaucratic headache for citizens who complain

Still, with the program in place, the best option is to make it as useful as possible. The goal, and the only reason to support the registry, is to make us safer … or at least to feel that way.

Urban Canadians are increasingly worried about crime. Violence is a particular bogeyman. With every incident, particularly the horrific shooting sprees that seem to occur more often these days, there are more calls for further restrictions on gun ownership, a perfectly understandable reaction.

On the other side of the argument, gun advocates will argue for greater access to guns, saying armed civilians could have gunned down such criminals before their killing sprees continued.

The latter arguments are commonplace in the U.S., where second amendment – the right to keep and bear arms – issues abound. In Canada, the notion seems ridiculous: having more guns at hand increases the risk. It would be far more likely for someone to see red, snap and use a readily available gun than it would be for someone to be faced with a murderer on a shooting rampage.

While Canada and the U.S. have comparable rates of homicides without guns (1.79 per 100,000 versus 1.35), the American firearm homicide rate is five times Canada’s (3.8 versus. 0.69 per 100.000); the U.S. handgun homicide rate is seven times Canada’s (2.83 versus 0.39 per 100,000).

The registry, while a fiasco to begin with, is clearly no reason to diminish real and effective gun controls.

It’s time for Harper to move on to far more pressing issues.

Pope uses dubious arguments to bolster attack on secularism

T

he best defence is a good offense. A less worldly pope, making a state visit to Britain as the revelations about Catholic priests and bishops abusing the children in their care spread across Europe, might have been reduced to shame and silence. But Benedict XVI knows about the uses of power – he was the late Pope John Paul II’s chief enforcer – and he immediately launched an attack on all the people he sees as the church’s enemies.

Speaking in Scotland last week, he condemned “aggressive forms of secularism” and the threat of “atheist extremism.” Never mind the hundreds or thousands of priests who raped little boys (and occasionally little girls).

The real threat is the people who don’t believe in God, and therefore have no morals. He even equated atheists with Nazis.

That was rich coming from a man whose predecessor, Pope Pius XII, personally negotiated a treaty with the Nazis in 1933 that was advantageous for German Catholics, and did not publicly condemn Hitler’s extermination of the Jews although he was well informed about it. But Benedict’s tactics worked very well, because all that the media could talk about after his Scottish speech was whether non-believers can be trusted to behave morally.

“As we reflect on the sobering lessons of atheist extremism of the 20th century,” said the itinerant pope, “let us never forget how the exclusion of God, religion and virtue from public life leads ultimately to a truncated vision of man and of society and thus a reductive

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER vision of a person and his destiny.” God, religion and virtue on one side; Nazis and Communists and a selfish, hedonistic wasteland of sex and secularism on the other.

Set the terms of the argument and you are already halfway to winning it. That is Benedict’s game, and it is played by many other leaders of every religion.

Only the fear of God makes people behave morally. Without that fear of divine punishment, they would act out every evil fantasy that popped into their minds. So stick with us.

It’s an easy allegation to make, and almost impossible to test – or so those who make it believe. But actually, it has been tested, at least for the Christian parts of the world, and guess what? Religion does not make people behave better. It makes them behave worse.

We’re not talking about suicide bombers and other religious extremists here.

We’re talking about ordinary people committing ordinary acts of violence, everyday thefts, and run-of-the-mill sex crimes. The more religious a particular society or region is, the more of that sort of stuff happens.

As researcher Gregory Paul puts it: “In general, higher rates of belief in and worship of a creator correlate with higher rates of homicide, juvenile and

early adult mortality, venereal disease, teen pregnancy, and abortion.” Whereas according to Pope Benedict’s argument, the United States, one of the world’s most religious countries, should be a crime-free paradise, while secular Sweden should be a vortex of crime and violence.

Direct observation suggests otherwise. So do Paul’s two articles, “CrossNational Correlations of Quantifiable Societal Health with Popular Religiosity and Secularism in the Prosperous Democracies: A First Look,” published in the Journal of Religion & Society in 2005, and “The Chronic Dependence of Popular Religiosity upon Dysfunctional Psychosociological Conditions,” published in Evolutionary Psychology Journal in 2009.

Even within the United States, Paul reported, “the strongly theistic, anti-evolution South and Midwest” have “markedly worse homicide, mortality, sexually transmitted disease, youth pregnancy, marital and related problems than the North-East, where societal conditions, secularization and acceptance of evolution approach European norms.”

There’s a chicken-and-egg question here, because what Paul’s research actually shows is that people are more religious in societies where socioeconomic conditions are poor. There is more crime and anti-social behaviour in such societies, but are people behaving badly because they are religious, or just because they are poor, ill-educated and desperate?

An ideal time to restore legitimacy in government W

e’re in the midst of a municipal election campaign. I can’t blame you if you haven’t taken much notice – it’s not obvious.

In Waterloo Region, you wouldn’t know we’re to head to the polls in just a month’s time. Nobody seems particularly interested about the electoral races in the cities. The indifference is more noticeable out here in the townships, especially in Wellesley, where there won’t even be an election.

It’s a different story, however, in Toronto. That’s because it’s more like party politics there, complete with the kind of drama we associate with federal and provincial elections.

The big story is the ascension of Rob Ford, touted as a straighttalking right-wing councillor, as the frontrunner to replace the left-wing David Miller. A large council, divided along party and ideological lines, looking over a multi-billion dollar budget – larger, in fact, than that of some provinces – makes Toronto’s race all that more energetic.

There are some parallels to the political jockeying going on in the U.S., where the news is filled with the latest goings-on of the Tea Party movement. Call it a backlash against those who think they know better than the public.

In the U.S., of course, there’s a longstanding anti-intellectual, anti-elite attitude, one played like a fiddle by the likes of Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck.

From the Editor Steve Kannon Such populist, anti-elitist politics have been a mainstay in the U.S. for more than a century, emerging strongly in their current form since the early 1970s. In Canada, the implementation is much newer, emerging with Preston Manning and the Reform movement.

To the south, the template was really set during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, hardly a bastion of brainy thought. His aw-shucks, down-home appeal covered an attack on public institutions and a drive to promote individualism over the collective good. The educated, socially involved products of the 1960s were portrayed as out-of-touch idealists looking to spend taxpayers’ money while enjoying cushy government jobs.

Some of those same arguments – right versus left – are clearly on display in Toronto’s mayoral race.

Call it a backlash against politicians who spend too much time and money on ineffective goals. Ford is talking a good of-the-people game.

He’s pushing all the right buttons: taxes, immigration, public sector unions. Clearly, he’s in tune with the disgruntled citizenry and those still reeling from the economic down-

Hundreds of millions of religious people are neither poor nor ignorant, but the bottom of the pecking order is where religion has its strongest grip in any society. Raise that bottom level, as countries with good social welfare systems do, and religious belief will gradually decline.

Besides, it’s not really secularism per se that horrifies Pope Benedict and his minions. Cardinal Kasper, his top official for relations with the Church of England, gave the game away in an interview last week with the German magazine Focus, condemning England as “a secular, pluralistic country. When you land at Heathrow, you sometimes think you

might have landed in a Third World country.”

Kasper was promptly removed from the list of high church officials travelling with the pope, but the Vatican spokesman, Monsignor Oliver Lahl, defended his remarks: “All he was saying is that when you arrive in Britain today it is like arriving in Islamabad, Mumbai and Kinshasa all at the same time.”

It’s the diversity, tolerance and necessary secularism of modern multicultural societies that religious leaders of every stripe really can’t stand.

Such societies have to be secular to accommodate all the different strands of belief and disbelief that must live alongside one another in peace, whereas the pope and his friends still long for the humble, homogeneous peasant societies where everybody believed, and believed the same thing.

The public reaction is obvious.

Politicians such as Ford are playing into it. Given tough times, blame those who got us there in the first place – and those who make easy targets. The financial high-rollers who gambled with our money and economic system make an easy antielitist target. As do those who failed to rein in the mess, the overseers who were often complicit in the whole affair.

Instead of sweeping programs and platitudes, politicians looking to succeed in this climate strip things down to the core concerns, going back to basics with platforms angry voters can relate to.

We don’t see that kind of electioneering here. The campaigns are dull, the populace disinterested.

Well, mostly so. In Woolwich, there’s a good chance issues such as the biogas facility planned for Elmira and gravel pits near West Montrose and Conestogo may galvanize some residents. At the regional level, plans for light rail transit have many of us concerned about the potential for massive waste.

Still, nobody seems overly keyed up, at least not yet. It’s all been fairly boring. And boring suits the incumbents just fine, in keeping with the adage that we don’t vote politicians in, we vote ‘em out.

That’s not to say there won’t be change. There’s a feel of it in the air.

It goes beyond anger over a particular issue or two. Rather, it seems to

be part of simmering dissatisfaction with the status quo. Again, that goes back to the uncertainty in the economy.

Maybe it’s a response to the managerial, bureaucratic way of doing things, the model adopted by all the councils in the region.

Perhaps it’s time for some policydriven agendas, for something that will inject interest into municipal politics. Maybe then we’ll get some politicians prepared to define the real priorities and to make the adjustments – i.e. cuts – needed to bring soaring property taxes under control while delivering on those basic quality of life issues most of us are concerned with.

That would help restore legitimacy of government in general.

There’s been a gradual erosion of the overall respect for democratic and active government because our politicians have lobbed up too many easy targets. Every time they fall down on the job – and there are many ‘every times’ – they provide ammunition to those who would see the entire system pulled down.

That’s why a back-to-basics approach appeals to so many of us: intrinsically, we know government is getting too big, too wasteful and too unaccountable. Leaders who actually get us back on track – as opposed to talking the talk simply to get elected – will be doing us a much larger favour than simply providing good government for the next four years.

Intimidation is not an appropriate response To the Editor,  I read the Observer the week an editorial cartoon appeared that resulted in several letters the following week. Two days after seeing the cartoon, I would have had trouble remembering what the subject was.

I did not think it was an attack or character assassination or offensive.

The responses to the cartoon I did find troubling, however. The offense that was perceived seemed exponential to what was drawn.

Not long ago a teacher was subject to harassment that resulted in libel charges against their accuser. I fully supported the libel action as it was

the right thing to do. The overreaction to this cartoon is the polar opposite.

A message has been sent that if you do something school staff find offensive you could be subject to a campaign that would intimidate most people.

“I shudder to think” that questioning the parenting of the Observer staff seemed an acceptable response to a cartoon.

As my wife is a teacher I regretfully have requested not to have my name published. I do not want her affected by my opinion.

What are we teaching our children?

To the Editor,  In response to a cartoon that appeared in a previous edition of the paper (Observer, Sept. 11/10), a letter writer asks readers to think about the values we’re passing on to our children. This is an excellent proposition.

When our children are faced with a situation in which someone says something to which they object, do

we encourage our children to respond with angry words and hostility? Or do we teach our children that each person is entitled to his or her own opinion, and that sometimes people are going to disagree?

I choose to teach my children that they can stand by their convictions without hurling insults and making assumptions.

ver the past year, the federal ecoENERGY program has helped thousands of Canadians in making the switch to green technology. For a period of time, Canadians were eligible to have their home evaluated for its energy efficiency and then receive grants from the government in order to upgrade their home to become more sustainable. Despite the cancellation of new registration to the program in June, however, more than 300,000 Canadian homeowners are still eligible for $8,750 in grant money.

For companies such as Elmira-based NextEnergy, there’s a push on now to remind the public the grant programs are still in effect until at least Mar. 31, 2011. There’s still time to make the switch to greener options.

are still eligible to get $8,750 when installing a NextEnergy geothermal system and for those of you who want to get an audit done now you can still get $4,375 from the provincial government.”

The Home Energy Retrofit Program (Ontario Grant) provides $4,375 when you replace your existing heating/air conditioning system with a geothermal system.

Strauss mentioned that those looking to access the government grants

should schedule their appointment at the earliest possible date since it may be difficult to book an appointment as the program nears the end date.

By ending pre-retrofit evaluation bookings now, providers of the program are confident that all eligible homeowners who previously entered the program by scheduling or completing a pre-retrofit evaluation will still have the opportunity to apply for

and receive a grant.

For Strauss, it’s important for consumers to understand the specifics of the changes to the offer by the government, and his concern grew when he looked at the sales of affiliated dealers of green energy products, Earth FX Energy Inc. and Bostech Mechanical. Soup king salutes “sacred” traits of local food T

he Campbell Company of Canada, one of the country’s biggest packaged food companies, has some surprising news for consumers – that is, whenever possible, choose fresh.

Campbell president Philip Donne told 150 or so guests gathered for the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre open house earlier this week that local food is no longer a trend, it’s a shift, and Campbell’s knows it.

More and more, he said, consumers are taking a local food view. They want to know where their food came from, how it was grown and what it contains. Closer is better, less is more and natural is in.

So if you’re a food giant such as Campbell’s, you need to become part of the shift, even though you sell millions of cans of soup a day. You’re not a mom and pop shop, and everyone knows it. You must take a different tack to get people to see whatever local-food qualities you possess.

Campbell’s already has a few points in its favour, the biggest being that it produces soup. Soup has a special folksy place in our lives. It may indeed be the ultimate local food – what other single food can potentially contain more local ingredients? What other food do we turn to when the chips are down because it’s so affordable, or in the case of chicken soup, when we’re sick? It’s a true part of our culture.

And so is Campbell’s. It’s been in Canada for 80 years and has carved out a niche in most Canadian kitch-

Food For Thought Owen Roberts ens. Despite the company’s mega-size, its products and our relationship with them have kept the connection with Canadians extremely personal.

The company recognizes the value in that, especially the trust factor, and has been repositioning itself to be a healthy choice.

To do so has meant hacking away at sodium content. One reason consumers gravitate towards local food, or at least the concept of it, is that they believe it’s healthier than its processed counterpart. And when society started recognizing the dangers of too much salt, packaged soup surfaced as a big problem. Reasons exist as to why companies use salt – some amount is needed for taste and preservation. But in many cases, it was way over the top, and sodium reduction has become a major focus for Campbell’s (in fact, it has been for seven years).

This approach underlines the corporate shift to perhaps not compete with local food, but rather to support its feel-good principles. In fact, Donne even goes one step further, and urges consumers to look favourably on local food and the farmers who grow it.

“As a packaged food company, we

say buy fresh whenever you can,” he says. “But when that’s not possible because of convenience or the season, we hope you’ll pick us.”

Donne’s not under the illusion that consumers will consider Campbell’s local. But he says the company can heighten the attributes its products possess that consumers associate with local food, especially health benefits. “We have to make sure our food is as full of active ingredients as possible,” he says.

As well, there’s a sense of community and social responsibility around local food. In response, Campbell’s

has embarked on a hunger alleviation program, teaming up with Food Banks Canada on programs that raise awareness, and others that actually put the company’s products on food bank shelves.

Donne thinks the local food movement has still not reached its crescendo, though, and won’t until consumers truly recognize the value of Canadian farmers.

“In the next 10 years, farmers should get rock star status for what they do,” he says. “Food’s not amusement ... food is sacred.”

“I think there is reluctance in general – people are hesitant to spend money on capital investments overall,” explained Jim Bolger, owner of Earth FX Energy Inc. “But in addition, we have been finding there is a misconception that there is no grant available when in fact it was just the federal portion.

There is still a great opportunity to save money.”

The intention of these grants is to offer homeowners a hand up, not a hand out, he explains. For green energy companies, the government grants were helpful in enticing customers to

install geothermal energy systems, but they assure that even without government assistance, switching to the new system is advisable for financial and environmental reasons.

“Even without the grants, when you consider the prices of oil, propane and electric heating, there is still a very strong business case for geothermal if you are looking to replace your old system or build new,” noted Bolger. “Long story short, you don’t need the grants to get a return on investment with geothermal.”

Longtime organizer of Elmira’s Terry Fox Run was motivated by son’s battle with the disease

udy Bieman has always led a busy life. She has raised five children, driven 18-wheelers since 1982, often to as far away as the Northwest Territories, and she even runs an accounting business out of her home.

And for the past 14 years, she has also been the head organizer of the Terry Fox Run in Elmira. Recently, however, she decided this year would be her last.

“I’m tired,” she said while sitting at the dining room table of her Linwood home, the wall behind her covered in family portraits. “I’ll be 65 in July, and I want to drop some of the things I’m doing because it’s too much.”

Bieman has been instrumental in organizing the run each year. Unlike runners, who can just show up and register the day of the race, she spends months of preparation behind the scenes. Sponsors need to be found, flyers need to be distributed, and donations need to be collected.

“It does take up a fair amount of time,” she said with a laugh, “I have it down to a fine art though.”

Bieman relies not only on her training as an accountant to make sure every year goes smoothly, but on a small army of volunteers as well. Her children Ron, Cathy, Mark, and Todd all help out on the big day, and her husband, Leon-

“Everything is volunteer, everything is donated. We don’t have a budget, period. It’s great that everyone can help; it makes for a better day.”

Originally from St. Clements, Bieman settled in Linwood in 1991 after spending a year in Edmonton. Her involvement with the Terry Fox Run began in 1996, the year her life changed forever; the year she lost her son Jeff to cancer.

Jeff had visited a doctor

in December 1994, which led to the discovery of what was thought to be a cyst. But when he became ill in January and ended up in hospital, doctors told him that he had testicular cancer.

“It was devastating, as you can imagine,” said Bieman.

“But doctors said it had a high cure rate, 75 to 80 per cent.”

Jeff underwent chemotherapy, but when the cancer spread to his bowel, the treatments were stepped up.

They removed one tumor and tried to shrink the other with

chemo.

That summer, after performing more tests, doctors found the cancer had spread to his lungs. Jeff endured more chemotherapy until Christmas, and by then he had gone into remission.

The disease returned, however, and with a vengeance.

“By January [1996] it was back, and he died in March.”

Despite her busy schedule, which included running a business that Jeff and her daughter Cathy had started to deliver vegetables, meat and

cheese to Northern Ontario, she decided she wanted to volunteer for the Terry Fox Run after Jeff ’s battle with cancer.

“It’s been gratifying because it feels like you’re doing something to help,” she said. “I’m hoping nobody has to go through what we’ve gone through. It’s always in your mind. Even now.”

Judy may be retiring from the run, but she knows it is in good hands. Kathy Bowman has been a volunteer for several years, and each year her husband and her four kids help with the run as well.

“We help out because we’ve had so many family members either succumb to cancer, or fight the fight and win it,” Bowman explained. “This year it means a lot because we have a cousin who just went through her second battle with a dangerous cancer and she won again.”

For Bieman, it was very important that someone as capable as Bowman took over the planning of the run before she would retire.

“It was always the thing that kind of held me back,” she explained. “But when she [Kathy] volunteered, I thought that was great. She’s very enthusiastic, and I think it needed some changes, some new blood. I’m sure she’ll have lots of good ideas.”

Judy has grown frustrated over the years with the way the Woolwich council has been unwilling to support the event, refusing to shut down South Field Drive and New Jerusalem Road, where the run takes place in Elmira. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For years Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve tried to get the road closed, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always refused. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not sure why,â&#x20AC;? she said, citing the fact that the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the only land crossing to the entire island â&#x20AC;&#x201C; was the site of a run this year.

Her days as the head organizer of the run may be over, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t count on Bieman staying away for very long. She intends to continue to help with the finances on the day of the run and in the days following it, to ensure all the money gets handled properly. She is a part-time accountant, after all.

Together with other volunteers around the region, Bieman has helped to raise nearly $160,000 for cancer research. This year alone, the run featured 42 participants and raised $12,801, with more donations to come in the next few days.

Nothing like the praiseworthy, braise-worthy taste of local T

his past Sunday we had the honour and pleasure to be part of an event that showcases the very best of what our area has to offer. Taste Local! Taste Fresh! is an annual event that pairs up farmers with chef ’s in an effort to showcase how amazing the food is that surrounds us.

Jody, I, and the team at Entertaining Elements had the privilege to be paired up with Charles Quality Meats, the best butchers in town who specialize in lamb and beef. Tony, one of Charles’ sons, was with us all day and I learned quite a few things as we served our beef dish to more than 500 people.

Charles Quality Meats is in St. Agatha, and they are one of the few remaining butchers who literally do everything on the farm. They grow their own special feed for the animals (which makes their lamb taste incredible), they have their own abat-

They have a special breed of cattle: they are a cross between a Limousine cow and Black Angus, which produces really meaty, yet well marbled cuts.

Upon seeing them, we remarked how long they were, with a flat back and chocolate brown coat.

The beef is remarkably juicy and rich tasting.

We were given blade roasts, and that meant one

thing: braising. Braising is a combination cooking method where you brown the meat really well at the start, and then simmer it slowly in just enough liquid to cover. At the end all we had to do was pull it apart with a fork. We served the braised beef on sourdough bread from Golden Hearth Bakery and topped it with some lightly pickled vegetables.

In a large, heavy pot (we used a fantastic Le Creuset from Entertaining Elements – the Julia Child kind), heat oil over medium high heat; Generously salt and pepper the meat on both sides, and then add to the hot oil; let brown until the surface is really crusty and dark; turn over and brown other side. Depending on the size of your pot, you will do this in batches, because the meat should not be touching; Once beef is all brown, remove and add onions to pot; cover and cook over low heat until golden; Add carrots and cook for a few minutes before adding wine; scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot; Return beef to pot, add stock just to cover and then add tomatoes; Bring to a simmer, cover, and then cook in a 325°F oven for 3 hours; Remove and then ‘pull’ meat apart using two forks.

Enjoy this beef on its own, in a bun, with mashed potatoes etc., but be sure to serve with some pickles!

Football season is back!

he boys of fall kicked off another season at EDSS on Wednesday afternoon, as both the junior and senior football teams were in action against Resurrection Catholic Secondary School.

The junior team played a close game, and managed to come away with a 15-13 win.

Coach Dave Munroe, who is new to the school’s football program this year, is looking forward to the season ahead.

“It’s nice to get the first win under our belt,” he said after Wednesday’s game, which the Lancers won by scoring a safety in the last minute of play. “With three new coaches, and this as my first year here, it’s sometimes hit-and-miss, but it’s been great.”

the pads before take to the field. That’s where the veteran leadership of the older players is critical.

“The Grade 10s have done a great job stepping up and showing them the ropes,” Munroe said. “Even in the last two weeks they’ve come leaps-and-bounds from the start of the year.”

The senior boys’ team, however, wasn’t as successful in their game. They fell 28-7 to Resurrection, the three-time defending WCSSA champs.

Coach Steve Karn remains optimistic they can put the early-season loss behind them. With this year’s squad, he feels that they can compete against any team in the league thanks to the amount of veteran experience the team boasts.

“We’ve got the biggest group of seniors returning ever. The level of experience on both sides of the football is going to be good,” he said.

The team also features many

members of the junior team that went all the way to the league championship two years ago, but lost.

“They’re hungry,” Karn said.

He admits that last year’s team was smaller than he would have liked, and that they got pushed around by a lot of teams, causing them to lose some close games. He doesn’t see that happening again this year.

“Defensively we’re strong and fast. We’re not going to get pushed around as much as we did last year.”

He also says this year’s players are willing to work harder to achieve success.

“Last year we had trouble getting players out to practice, but this year we’ve had 40 to 44 guys out every night. I think they know that we have some talent and want to win.”

Both teams suit up next against Waterloo Collegiate Institute on Sept. 30. Kickoff is 1 p.m. for the juniors, and 3 p.m. for seniors.

Geese are the ones behind Bill C-391 flip-flop Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea I think we can all see that they love it too. All you need to do is look at your local waterfronts and parks to see that they are thriving in this environment that makes it a little harder to bring new waterfowlers into the fields.

Look, those politicians supporting the ban of the long gun registry – the ones with no appreciable lawns – have always cried that it doesn’t stop crime. After all, criminals, they rightly suggest, do not register firearms. Instead, proponents of the scrapping of the registry frequently assert that it just hassles hapless duck hunters and rural folks – the very people who would typically hunt geese. As you can see, there are wheels within wheels here.

I’ve looked at the facts and I like to believe that I’m being objective about this. For instance, even though some police chiefs say the registry is helpful when an officer comes to the door (because the officer can check to see if there is a gun in the residence), this doesn’t make any sense to me. After all, a good cop should always make the assumption that he or she is walking into a potentially dangerous situation and criminals don’t register their firearms anyhow.

Honestly, if I and other sportsmen truly believed that the long gun registry was a vital tool for policing, I know we’d be the first to support our cops. I, for one, have nothing but the greatest respect for the job they do and how tough it must be.

Geese, on the other hand, couldn’t care less. They don’t mind the untold millions that taxpayers put into the registry – money that those of us opposing the registry say would have been better used hiring more cops, dealing with the root causes of crime, fixing the backlogged court

systems and creating more social programs that provide alternatives to a life of crime.

Sure, it had to be geese. I mean to think that the registry is effective in doing anything else but causing inconvenience and making potential criminals out of duck hunters, all because some resented it and never went through the registration process, is nothing but bird-brained.

Need more proof ? Well, the other day I saw a bumper sticker that said, “Honk if you support the long gun registry.” Enough said.

A silver lining on the season

f there is any single, mysterious entity behind the cancellation of Bill C-391 – the bill to repeal the long gun registry – it must be geese.

Believe me, I do not arrive at this conclusion lightly.

No sir, I am betting that Canada geese, which must outnumber registered voters by a margin of 60 to one now, probably put pressure on all those Liberal and New Democratic MPs who flipped-flopped on their previous support of the proposed legislation.

I suspect they got to these stalwarts with the typical goose threat: “Do what we ask or your lawn gets it.” I know that sends chills down my spine.

If so, who can blame these wavering politicians – the ones who previously supported the bill wholeheartedly – from having a change of heart?

Why geese, you ask? Well, I think we need to look at motive. I mean, who else benefits from a continuation of the long gun registry. Okay, ducks but we all know that they aren’t nearly as organized as the geese. Yes, only a goose has the intestinal fortitude, and the intestines to make good on the threat.

Let’s face it, the firearms registry, adds another hurdle in the path of any new hunter who wants to do battle with geese. It’s not a prohibitive hurdle, by any means – just another inch or two on the bar. But, combined with all the other hurdles to new hunters, it’s getting to be a fairly lofty leap. And geese love it.

fter a promising preseason start, the puck has dropped on another year for the Wellesley Applejacks.

“We’re really excited.

The players are optimistic, and so is the coaching staff,” said head coach Kevin Fitzpatrick.

The Jacks concluded their exhibition schedule with a 3-2 win over the St. George Dukes Sept. 16 to finish exhibition play with a 3-1 record. The team opened its season the following night with a 3-1 road loss to the Tavistock Braves.

Fitzpatrick said a case of opening-night jitters, combined with scheduling conflicts that have prevented the team from having any practices in more than a week-and-

a-half, contributed to their opening-night loss to the Braves.

“We haven’t even had a chance to work on line combinations or breakouts or anything,”

he said. “Once we get a few practices under our belts and get to know each other better, we’ll be a lot better.”

After a disappointing end to last season

in which the Jacks finished with a record of 7-23-6 and missed the playoffs, the squad has 14 new faces this time out. For Fitzpatrick, this year’s team is go-

ing to have to work hard just to become comfortable with each other, let alone play against the opposition.

He also says the strength of this year’s team is the players’ willingness to skate hard every shift and their excellent work ethic, a work ethic that failed to materialize against the Braves, however.

“In Tavistock we played very hard in spurts, and that’s the real disappointment: we didn’t skate well in the first and third period.”

The Braves got on the board late in the first period with a goal from Devin Berg, and at the 5:24 mark of the second period they added another on the power play from Nic Quehl.

at 11:20, assisted by Corey Way and Geoff Parr.

But the Braves put it away with just under three minutes left in the second period on a goal by Charlie Rowland. Both teams were held off the score sheet in the third period, and the Jacks were outshot 30-22 overall.

Fitzpatrick said he is confident the team can rebound from their opening night loss.

“We played very nervously. We were uptight all night. I just think with that first game, players didn’t know what to expect […] that’s why we play all [35] games.”

The Jacks next game is tomorrow (Sunday) in Port Dover, where they take on the Sailors at 2 p.m. Their home opener is Oct. 9 against the Burford Bulldogs.

Woolwich Sledge Hockey kicks off its season Katie Edmonds

owever easy the Sugar Kings may make it look, a person’s first step out onto the ice on a pair of skates is often a nerve-wracking experience. For those attending the Woolwich Sledge Hockey season opener and “Try Sledge” event at the Woolwich Memorial Centre, that familiar feeling may come rushing back.

This afternoon (Saturday) Woolwich Sledge Hockey hosts its second annual season opener, an event that will include a demonstration of sledge hockey with a beginner level game at 4 p.m. in the Jim McLeod Arena. Also on tap is a high-level exhibition game between the 2009 Ontario Sledge Hockey League champions, the Windsor Ice Bullets, and the 2010/11 Canadian Women’s Sledge Hockey team.

Following the games, The Ontario ParaSport Ready, Willing and Able program staff and Woolwich Sledge Hockey volunteers will be available to provide sledges, helmets, gloves and sticks to anyone who would like to try out the challenging sport.

“So many people who come out or have seen it played say ‘I would like to try that,’” said the organization’s head coach, Keith Metzger.

“It’s a different feeling, and this is the time when able bodied players can come out and try it.”

For those unfamiliar with the term, sledge hockey is a sport that was designed to allow participants who have a physical disability to play hockey. It is a fastpaced, highly physical sport played by athletes with a physical disability in the lower part of the body; including amputees, people with spina bifida, cerebral palsy and other physical impairments. The game is very similar to traditional ice hockey, except the players sit and are strapped onto custom-made aluminum frame sledges with two blades and a runner. The players use two sticks, each with a blade at one end and picks at the opposite end. The picks are used to propel players along the ice and the blade end is used for stick handling, passing and shooting. The games consist of three 15-minute stop-time periods.

“The biggest challenge with sledge hockey is the balance,” explained Metzger. “To balance on a sled takes a lot of core strength and concentration. A lot of people are surprised at just how tough it is when they try it for the first time.”

The McLeod ice pad will be open at 6 p.m. for anyone who would like to try a sledge. Following the trial, a draw for an Atlanta Thrashers jersey will wrap up the evening at 7 p.m.

f the league decided to scrap the second period and move straight to the third, that might be just fine with the Sugar Kings.

Last weekend the Kings were outscored 6-0 and outshot 29-22 in the second periods of their two games, a 4-3 overtime win against the Stratford Cullitons on Sept. 17 and their 5-2 loss to the Guelph Hurricanes on Sunday.

Elmira got off to a quick start in their first road game of the season against Stratford, with Brad Kraus scoring 89 seconds into the game on the power play.

Shane Smith scored with 26 seconds left in the frame.

“I think we just went out and played our game and established our identity,” said head coach Geoff Haddaway of his team’s strong start.

The second period was scoreless until the 15:04 mark when Stratford’s Chett Binning scored a short-handed goal after a shot was blocked at the point, leading to a two-on-one the other way. Stratford followed it up with two more quick goals at 17:27 and 19:05 from Mitch McCrank and Tyler Masson.

Early in the third, however, the Kings rallied. After a couple of hard shifts to start the period, Devon Wagner tied it up at 3:10, assisted by Zach Salomon, with a shot from a bad angle that found its

way to the back of the net.

“We started off the third period pretty strongly and Devon got rewarded for hard work by all of our players,” said Haddaway.

The game went into overtime, with Kraus ending it just over a minute into the extra frame with his second goal of the game, a perfect shot into the top corner and nearly identical to his goal in the first.

“It was a goal-scorer’s goal,” said Haddaway. “Brad’s got such an incredible release, that even though goalies know its coming, he can often beat them.”

The Kings were forced to play most of the game without their captain, Josh Woolley, who received a game misconduct for checking from behind with under a minute left in the first period. In goal, Nick Horrigan picked up his second win of the season, stopping 37 of 40 shots.

On Sunday, the Kings second-period troubles returned, with a different outcome, however.

Prior to the game, the Kings paid tribute to three team directors who passed away during the summer, Bob Waters, Don Nearingburgh, and Joe Beer, and their families were

welcomed to stand at centre-ice for a moment of silence.

After skating to a scoreless draw in the first period – a period dominated by the Kings as they outshot Guelph 15-8 – it was Guelph who broke through with three unanswered goals in the second, two of them on the power play, by Matt Hill, Brandon Stewart, and Jake Weidner.

Haddaway, howev-

er, doesn’t think the period was as bad as it might appear on the score sheet.

A combination of bad penalties by Elmira, and good puck movement by the Hurricanes, led to the goals.

The home team took seven penalties in the frame, including one for unsportsmanlike conduct as well as a 10-minute misconduct for inciting an opponent.

“We took a couple penalties that we’re going to have to avoid taking, and a good team like Guelph has a lot of firepower.”

Haddaway suggested

his players need to play on the edge to be effective, but that players need to learn to control their emotions a little better in those tense situations.

At one point the Kings had three players in the box, and the crowd began to shout their displeasure with the referees.

“It’s easy for me on the bench to say 'calm down and show discipline' – there’s no question that is something we have to work on,” he said.

In the third period, Guelph’s Erik Belanger knocked home a loose puck on what initially appeared to be a broken play at 1:22, and Mark Bell made it 5-0 by scoring shorthanded at 13:17.

That makes it two games in a row that Elmira has surrendered a short-handed goal, a point that Haddaway says isn’t a cause for concern – yet.

Kids’ basketball program gearing up for a new season James Jackson

T

he Woolwich Cougars basketball team is making a call for anyone interested in playing some hoops this fall. All practices are on Saturdays, and open to boys and girls from Grades 1 to 9.

The program has been in place since 2007, started by Paul

McGinley, a retired teacher who has taught in the Waterloo Region District School Board system for about 31 years, and coached high school basketball throughout his career.

He is also a referee with the K-W Basketball Officials.

As a coach, he noticed over the years a lack of opportunities for young

basketball players in the community, which is why he started the program.

“Maybe I can fill a niche here in the community and give them a little better skill set,” he says.

The aim of the program - which draws on students from Woolwich and Wellesley Townships, as well as

Wilmot - is to promote both individual skills and teamwork, to generate a greater understanding of the game, to develop fair play and sportsmanship, and to create and overall fun learning experience.

The players are divided into three divisions based on their grade level, and combine boys and girls. Novice for

Grades 1 to 3, Atom for Grades 4 to 6, and Bantam for Grades 7 to 9.

This is the first year that children entering Grade 1 have been welcome to attend, and the number of divisions has been expanded from two to three.

McGinley says he is excited about this years program, but admits he has one major opponent

in this area - hockey.

“We’re always competing with hockey. It’s the number one love here, and I knew that coming in. I have people say they’re not sure if they can commit to the program because they hadn’t gotten their hockey schedule yet,” he says with a laugh.

In pre-season action, the senior team won their opening tournament in Kincardine last weekend, and the junior team placed second in a tournament in Guelph.

The regular season starts on Tuesday, Sept. 28 against Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute, and EDSS will also

host its 8th annual girls basketball tournament on Friday Oct. 1st and Saturday Oct. 2nd.

Admission is free, and the community is welcome to come and cheer on the teams.

Both teams will also be taking part in a tournament in Cambridge today and tomorrow.

Haddaway said Smith, who played for the University of Guelph last year, will compete with Nick Horrigan

“We’re going to let that body of work determine who becomes our number-one goalie […] and the only way that happens is if they

push each other and both get to play.”

Local TV host finds national audience Elmira native Chad Bisch leads the charge on ‘Burn My Mortgage,’ which debuts nationally next month on the W network A NEW HOME After being chosen to host the new reality TV show ‘Burn My Mortgage,’ Chad Bisch has become more savvy when making payments on his own Waterloo home.

lmira-born Chad Bisch is getting used to seeing his face in unexpected places: billboards, posters on the side of the city bus, he once even stepped through the doors of a Quebec hotel to see himself as a life-sized cutout.

The TV personality, in his third season as host of Roger’s TV show ‘Grand River Living’ is a bit of a local celebrity. And now he may be catapulted to a whole new level of fame when his new reality TV show titled ‘Burn My Mortgage’ premiers in early October on the W network, a national specialty network with some six million subscribers.

“It’s a little nerve-wracking, but it’s mostly exciting,” said the 37-year-old Wilfrid Laurier University graduate. “This is something I have known that I wanted to do for as long

as I can remember.”

‘Burn My Mortgage’ is touted as a fun, light-hearted yet challenging show designed to show families how to effectively manage their money, and pay down their mortgage.

“This show is not about people who have huge debts.

It’s a bit like ‘home finance’ meets The Amazing Race,” he explained. “It’s about people who think they are doing the right thing. They have a mortgage and they are making payments on that mortgage, but we show them how to trim down their spending and see a huge impact in the long run.”

Bisch was contacted via Facebook earlier this year and asked to come in for an audition, where he wowed the casting crew; he spent his summer weekends filming all 13 episodes for the upcoming season.

“I think the main reason that they cast me was because they liked that I was from a small town, and that I could relate to people,” explained Bisch. “I grew up in Elmira, in a middle class environment and can relate to people of the middle class who are facing the same things my family did.”

When he began filming the show, Bisch was no mortgage authority himself.

“I have a mortgage,” he said with a laugh. “But I wouldn’t call myself an expert.”

At the outset of filming, Bisch was making set, weekly payments towards his mortgage. By the third week of filming, he had taken some of the advice that he was giving out and starting putting aside an extra $100 per week. By the time the filming wrapped, he had doubled the amount of money saved; simply by being aware of his finances

and tracking where he spent his money.

“I started to look at my habits and began to realize where I could cut back,” he said. “So many people don’t realize all the little things that they spend money on, and that they can see a big difference by just putting aside small change.”

In the first episode, premiering Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. on the W Network, parents Roman and Christine share their dream of a mortgage-free future where they can give their kids the financial leg-up their own parents afforded them. In order to do that, this family has to take a closer look at their ‘wants’ and determine which they actually need.

as well as continuing to host GRL. During his nine years with Rogers, he has contributed as a reporter for the station’s former newsmagazine show, Plugged IN! and produced his own segment, Outta Boundz. He has also hosted Reel Shorts, participated as a back up host of Rogers Daytime, and a fill-in analyst for Kitchener Rangers Hockey on Rogers TV. He will have completed filming of 100 episodes of Grand River by Christmas.

For Bisch’s mother Marg, who has lived in Elmira her whole life but doesn’t subscribe to Rogers TV, the new show will provide her a chance to see what all the fuss is about.

“Next week I am going to be on Canada AM to talk about Burn My Mortgage and my mum watches that one,” he said with a laugh. “To her, now I have really made it.”

In cartoons and advertising, bees are almost invariably depicted as male, says May Berenbaum in The Earwig’s Tail: A Modern Bestiary of Multi-legged Legends.

Donald Duck faced off in a dozen cartoon episodes against Spike the Bee, and Jerry Seinfeld was voice for Barry B. Benson, a male bee who in “The Bee Movie” announces his intention to sue New York residents for theft of his honey. Spokesbees from the Wheat Honey’s Buffalo Bee of the 1950s to today’s Honey Nut Cheerios Bee are unmistakenly male, with guy voices and dress and even pointy cowboy boots.
