A BAD TIME TO SNARL TRAFFIC APPROACHING ELMIRA
FAISAL ALI AFTER A LOT OF effort and a lot of work, the Heidelberg Community Centre is at last holding its grand opening this Saturday for the community. “I think everybody in Heidelberg is thrilled that it’s there and are eager to see it open and see what’s going to be taking place,” said Bev Baechler, a township employee with the recreation department, and a committee member of the Heidelberg Recreation Association that spearheaded the project. The air is sure to be jubilant as the rec. association is planning for fun and festive activities alongside the official ribbon-cutting. There will be face painting, a cake cutting, games on the playground for the kids, beverages and tours of the facility which Baechler hopes will be a real community hub for the village. “It’s just a gathering place that we can again have our fun days that we used to have. All the families come out and enjoy the day, getting to see their neighbours again after the summer recess. Just a gathering place that people can come and have programs there,” said Baechler. A four-vehicle collision occurred Tuesday evening along Arthur Street near Scotch Line Road south of Elmira, resulting in minor injuries to one of the drivers. Traffic was backed up both southbound and northbound. A second, smaller incident was reported an hour later when another vehicle collided with a stationary car in traffic, causing only minor damage. Wellesley approves drainage improvements at Manser Road and Schummer Line FAISAL ALI NINE PROPERTY OWNERS WILL pony up an average of $25,000 apiece for their share of municipal drain work approved last week by Wellesley councillors. The rural property owners in the area of Manser Road and Schummer Line had requested the work be done, however, knowing they’d be responsible for the lion’s share of the cost.
The drainage work is projected to cost $326,000, and the majority ($227,000) to be levied back to the nine benefitting property owners, based on frontage. The township and region are responsible for construction along the roadways, with Wellesley facing a $31,000 tab for work along Schummer Line and the Region of Waterloo responsible for $76,000 along Manser Road,
which is a regional roadway. At the August 29 meeting, staff recommended the project go ahead in response to a petition by some of the property owners, who had requested back in 2012 for the township to install new drainage for their farmlands. Lead project engineer John Kuntze explained that the properties had been in need of proper drain outlets for years to replace
defunct drainage that only covered some of the farmland. He noted that some of the property owners were having to dump the water drained from their fields into the roadside, rather than having an actual outlet. “The expression I use is (the Ontario Drainage Act) allows for the construction of a communal drainage system on private DRAINAGE | 5
