Tales from the head of the class Legendary Lancers chronicles the achievements of 49 notable EDSS graduates and staff members FAISAL ALI ELMIRA DISTRICT SECONDARY SCHOOL has a long history as a small school with a big impact. That was the thinking behind the Legendary Lancers, a book by author Nancy Silcox, on some of the movers and shakers to have passed through the modest halls of the Elmira school.

The book is being launched at an event this Sunday, and will be sold at the EDSS front desk afterwards.

“These are stories of people who have gone to a smaller high school and have been successful,” said EDSS principal Paul Morgan.

“It’s an opportunity to highlight how what you learn in four or five years in high school can make a difference and can set you up for success down the road. They’re really fascinating stories.”

Each profile is only a few pages long, he notes, and could be read in a single sitting.

EDCL event celebrates staff, volunteers and residents FAISAL ALI

WOOLWICH HAS MUCH TO boast about when it comes to being a supportive and inclusive community. It’s a status that’s been not so much won but, rather, hard earned by the tireless efforts of many individuals and collectives.

That community spirit was on full display Tuesday as the Elmira District Community Living (EDCL) took an evening to recognize the dedication of its staff and volunteers, without whom none of its work would have been possible.

For more than 50 years, EDCL has been supporting those in the community with intellectual disabilities, not only live their lives but thrive, too.

Today, the organization says it supports over 130 people through supportive homes, residences, independent assisted-living programs and more. Of course, none of that would have been possible without the staff and volunteers.

Almost 200 staff and volunteers were recognized, including employees at the Reid Woods residence, which is home to 11 individuals, eight of whom are in a wheelchair.

Family of the current and former residents took to the stage to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff.

Some noted how the staff were there again and again for their loved ones even in their final moments, foregoing their weekends and vacations to give them company.

Besides the people working and volunteering, Janine Haid and Mark Allison received special recognition for their role as trailblazers with the Community Ambassador award.

Haid and Allison are residents of the EDCL’s Snowgoose Apartments, which offer independent living for each tenant. The two were recognized Tuesday for their involvement and work in the community; for being out in the public sphere and showing themselves as valued members of society.

“I think the idea was that Community Ambassador [award] is showing the community that there is a place for everyone in the community. And Mark and Janine have volunteered at many, many places and jobs and always felt welcome where they worked,” explained Donna Haid, president of EDCL and Janine’s mother.

He works in the kitchen at The Crossroads restaurant two full days a week, at Sanyo in Elmira once a week and has been working at Trylon on Monday afternoons for the past 10 years. He also works for Food Basics. Janine Haid, meanwhile, has been volunteering at the Elmira Day Care for 20 years; she is also a volunteer at the church she attends.

“I think the point of all that is simply to say he’s involved in the community,” said Bob Allison, Mark’s father. People know Mark because he’s out and frequently engaged with the members of the community, adds Bob, and not just sitting at home.

“I’m well known because I’m Mark’s father, not because I’ve done anything very much in my own life.

So that’s what I mean by ambassador, I guess,” he said, to which Mark’s mother Kathy laughs.

Janine Haid said she was “happy and excited, and a little bit nervous” to be winning an award. Especially because she was planning on giving a speech in front of the hundreds of onlookers, which she did to a rousing applause.

John Bruder, one of the

final speakers of the night, talked about his late brother Paul who was supported by the EDCL. He lived at Reid Wood Assisted Living Centre. Bruder noted the stark difference of his brother’s treatment before and after coming to live at the Elmira residence.

Not only was Paul’s life saved moving to Reid Woods, he said, it was enriched.

The first local cases of influenza have officially been reported in Waterloo Region.

Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, fatigue and muscle or joint aches are all symptoms of influenza, although it can cause more severe illness than just the common cold.

Spread from person to person directly by coughing or sneezing, or indirectly through contaminated

surfaces, the flu is at its peak between November and April. The infectious period for influenza can last two to five days, up to seven in young children, after the onset of symptoms.

Region of Waterloo Public Health advises anyone experiencing symptoms of respiratory illness to stay home until symptoms begin to lessen, cover coughing, frequently wash hands and to not visit persons in hospitals, retirement or long-term care homes.

However, the most at risk people for influenzarelated complications are adults and children with underlying health conditions, compromised immune systems, healthy pregnant women, residents of care homes and facilities, people over the age of 65 and children under 5.

According to Public Health, the best protection for persons over the age of six months in the influenza

immunization – offered free to anyone that lives, works or attends school in Ontario. It is reported that the vaccine can prevent influenza illness in 50-80 per cent of healthy children and adults. However, frequently washing hands and disinfecting touched surfaces are everyday ways to prevent getting sick.

Flu vaccine is available through pharmacies, primary health care providers, walk-in clinics and Public Health’s family flu clinics through Ontario’s universal influenza immunization

program.

“It is the perfect time to be getting flu vaccine now when our activity is still relatively low because it does take a couple of weeks for the body to build up that immune response to the vaccine, so it is optimal for people to be thinking about it and be vaccinated,” said Kristy Wright, manager of infectious disease, tuberculosis control & emergency preparedness with the Public Health department.

School programs bridge the gap to teach young kids the history that makes Remembrance Day so important ALI WILSON HAVING NO FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCE with war, or even a living relative who took part in the historic battles, today’s school kids may find it difficult to appreciate the significance of Remembrance Day. With that in mind, teachers across the townships have developed various initiatives, including the use of art and song, to bridge the disconnect for youth.

That was apparent at John Mahood Public School in Elmira.

Students from kindergarten through to Grade 6 had their art and poems on display in the gymnasium during a Remembrance Day ceremony last week.

The ceremony opened with local Scouting representatives carrying the flag into the gym. Students then heard trumpeting from Uwe Claussen of the Fergus Brass Band and in turn shared their rendition of Song of Peace, led by teacher Dave Nunn.

“It is a two-part song, so there are English words and Latin words. Its key message is centred on how we are so lucky to live in a peaceful country and making sure that we continue to embrace a peaceful kind of approach,” Nunn explained.

Students from Grades 1 through to 6 had been practicing the song in both English and Latin, with the Latin translation being ‘grant us peace.’

“One of the things that we have talked about in class and we have talked about in the assembly was how we are so fortunate to live in a society where the children get to enjoy the freedom to come to school, the freedom to be taken care of medically.

Universal health care and education are fundamental principles of our country, and Remembrance Day is a chance for us to be grateful to people who have protected those principles,” he said.

teacher Claire Campbell, it was important to find a common ground in bridging the gap for students, from something that had happened many years ago to understanding that that was the framework for the society we have today and allowing us to live the life we enjoy here.

“It’s tough because it isn’t their grandparents, their aunts, their uncles – there is a few generations [since]. So our job as teachers is to make sure that we can teach these kids and show them and tell them about what happened during the wars and why,” Campbell explained.

For Campbell, that involved having her pupils participate in the Royal Canadian Legion poster contest. Students got to show what they thought about Remembrance Day using different symbols such as poppies and soldiers, and appropriate colours to symbolize peace, war and hurt expressed through posters or poems.

“We read different books and we talked about why people would go to war, the reality that many lives were lost and the reason that they fought was for our freedom,” she explained. “So the big message was that we want to remember these people because they gave their lives for us.”

Nunn added, the terminology for who soldiers were was a driving force in bridging that connect for youth, who he proudly said embraced and respectfully commemorated the day.

“It is interesting because we use words like soldiers and nurses, pilots and people in the navy and we use terms like this but really we just need to think of these people as fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters and that is more obvious and that is language that children can connect to,” he said. “So that is what I have been trying to incorporate into POSTER | 5

Price jump for Conestogo pumper fire truck Woolwich has to come up with another $70,000 for a new fire truck after the company building the pumper/tanker went into receivership.

The amount represents most of the deposit paid by the township.

Meeting last week, councillors voted to cancel a contract with Arnprior Fire Trucks, awarding the work to Dependable Emergency Vehicles, which agreed to honour its bid from the tendering process.

The township had paid a deposit of almost $87,000 to Arnprior. None of that money will be refunded, but Woolwich will be getting about $22,000 worth of equipment built so far, chief administrative officer David Brenneman reported.

With the manufactured body factored into the price, the township’s net payment to Dependable will be just over $560,000 for the pumper/tanker that will go the Conestogo station.

WRDSB eyes Naxolone kits

The Waterloo Region District School

Board is considering placing Naloxone kits in all schools with Grade 7 students and up. The board is looking into the costs for the kits themselves, which are used to temporarily reverse the affects of opioid overdose from drugs such as fentanyl and oxycodone, as well as the added training needed to use them.

The school board also agreed to develop an opioid crisis policy that would include measures for prevention and education.

The government of Ontario has stated that the province is in the midst of an “opioid crisis”, and has pledged millions of dollars to fight of the phenomenon.

In Waterloo Region, the number of deaths due to opioids has more than

doubled between 2005 and 2016 to 50, according to statistics by Public Health Ontario. Emergency department visits, however, have shot up more significantly, from a rate of 16 per 100,000 people to 41 per 100,000 over the same period.

10:35 AM | A transport truck and a car were involved in a collision at the intersection of Arthur and First streets in Elmira. The driver of the truck, a Hanover man, was found to have disobeyed a red light. The Elmira woman who was driving the car was not hurt, but there was considerable damage done to her vehicle.

9:30 AM |Wellington County OPP responded to a report of a serious single-vehicle collision involving a cement mixer on Wellington Road 10, south of Moorefield. The driver suffered serious injuries and air ambulance responded to transport the victim. The investigation forced the temporary closure of the road between Concession 5 and Selinger Road.

Rabies bait drop for Elmira

The forecast calls for a chance of rain or snow Thursday, but there may be more than precipitation falling from the sky in the Elmira area. Responding to a potential rabies case, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is

planning to drop rabies vaccine bait over a 40 square kilometre area.

The ministry is waiting to see if the case tests positive, at which time a helicopter will be dispatched to start dropping the bait packets, the MNRF said in a release this week.

The khaki-green coloured bait being distributed by the helicopter is made of wax-fat with an attractant flavour (vanilla-sugar). A label with a toll-free telephone number (1-888-574-6656) and “Do not eat” are located on the exterior of the bait and a plastic package containing the liquid rabies vaccine is embedded in the centre. If found, the bait should not be touched, but left for

raccoons, skunks and foxes to consume, the ministry advises.

1:30 AM | Members of the Wellington County OPP were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) check on Wellington Road 21, Inverhaugh, when the driver of a Chrysler sedan entered the checkpoint. While speaking with the occupants, officers detected the odour of fresh marijuana and suspected that they were in the possession of a controlled substance. The occupants were arrested and the search incident to arrest revealed both cannabis marijuana and methamphetamine. Further investigation revealed that his driver’s licence was suspended. As a result, a 52-year-old Elmira woman and 46-year-old Kitchener man were charged with ‘possessing methamphetamine contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.’ The Kitchener man was also charged with ‘driving while suspended.’ They are both scheduled to appear in a Guelph courtroom on December 15.

Canadian Mental Health Association extends support group help to Elmira In partnership with WCS, three groups – depression/anxiety, addictions and family/friends – now holding meetings at WMC ALI WILSON The Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington’s Self Help Services is partnering with Woolwich Community Services to provide increased mental health and addictions support in Elmira.

Introducing three new peer support groups that will cover depression and anxiety, addictions and supporting a family member living with mental health or addictions issues, this is the first time CMHA Waterloo Wellington has offered peer groups in the region’s township.

“Having these groups

run in Elmira allows easier access for those who would use public transportation to attend the same groups in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

Many K-W groups can run in the evenings, and local public transportation does not run late enough,” said Tina Reed, coordinator of community support at WCS. “We are excited to be able host these groups at Woolwich Community Services.”

The groups came about as a result of community interest, through both individual members and organizations within the area who reached out to CMHA Waterloo-Wellington.

“Peer support groups are an opportunity for people to come together and realize that they are not alone in experiencing issues like depression, anxiety, addiction or for caring for a loved one with mental health and addiction issues,” said Keely Phillips, manager of self help services with CMHA Waterloo Wellington.

“Typically our rural areas have not had the same resources. We know that a lot of folks in Elmira, although they might be interested in attending a peer support group, say in Kitchener or Guelph, transportation issues or the fact that a lot of our

groups in the city are offered during the day, have made it difficult. This is one way to be able to better meet the community’s needs.”

The first of the three new offerings is a depression and anxiety group that meets weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7- 8:30 p.m., facilitated by peers participants share experiences, information and provide mutual support to promote and maintain optimal health.

“We have the depression and anxiety peer support group, which is for people who identify as having lived experience of having depression or anxiety,” said Phillips.

“People come together they share their experiences in a safe way and they also share coping tools to be able to provide each other with hope groups are facilitated by staff and a volunteer.”

The second meets every second Wednesday, starting this week, from 7-8:30

p.m. The addictions group is for people struggling to break the cycle of addiction, those who have a difficult time recognizing triggers through peer-led discussions on how to create safe and healthy chances.

“The addictions peer support group is similar to the depression and anxiety group, so people who identify as having lived experience of an addiction – any addiction – and that group also has some content pieces too it, as well, in terms of helping people learn some new skills around dealing with substance use or behaviour addictions,” she explained.

Beginning next Wednesday, November 22 from 7-8:30 p.m. and alternating with the addictions group, is the supporting the supporter group. This peer-led group is for people who are supporting a family member or friend living with mental health or addiction issues – dis-

cussing mental health, how best to be supportive while considering personal boundaries, community resources and self-care.

“We know that caregivers can feel isolated in their experience as well and for them being able to connect with other people going through similar things, they are able to share strategies and be able to express what they are going through with people who are understanding because they have been there,” she said.

All groups are held at the WMC in Elmira, 5 Memorial Ave., and are walk-in style, Phillips explained, meaning there is no need to register beforehand nor do people have to provide a lot of information on arrival to participate.

As Canada’s largest CMHA, the Waterloo Wellington chapter serves all ages, providing those with addictions, mental health or development needs with full-care systems.

– and just learn a ton about what the school’s all about.”

The book profiles 49 individuals, mostly EDSS alumni but a few teachers as well, who went on from their time at the rural school to make a difference, whether that’s locally, in Waterloo or Ontario, or even on the international stage.

“Probably the most well known internationally is Malcolm Gladwell,” said Morgan.

Gladwell, the internationally renowned author of New York Times bestsellers The Tipping Point and Blink, as well as other works, had his beginnings right here in Elmira.

“There were a couple of stories that really were interesting with Malcolm,” said Legendary Lancers author Nancy Silcox. One involved the author back in his halcyon days at EDSS organizing a protest after learning that the school’s beloved principal was being transferred, as principals often are.

“And so Malcolm and his buddies decided they were going to arrange a protest march. They hired about

three or four busses that were packed with Elmira kids and it went down to the education centre – the Waterloo Region education centre – and they had foghorns and they had noise-makers and there were about 300 kids there and they marched around education centre, calling on the board chair to come out and talk to them,” she chuckled.

The whole affair became front-page news for The Record, showing early on the young author’s penchant for the limelight. But Malcolm Gladwell is only the most famous of the lot.

“We have an airline pilot, we have professional singers, we have dramatic arts people, we have other authors, we have local business people,” said Morgan. There’s Paul Straus, the president of Home Hardware Stores Ltd.; Garrett Rank, the NHL referee and professional golf player.

Silcox adds a few other names to the list.

“You’ve got Ken Seiling, of course, the [Waterloo] regional chair. You’ve got Paul Frey who was a world class opera singer. You’ve got Roger Martin who was the dean of the Rotman

School of Economics.

The book mostly focuses on the students, but there are a few well-known teachers as well that made the cut.

“Bill Exley ... I had more stories about Mr. Exley than any other person. He retired a couple years ago but he is very famous,” said Silcox. “Gord Davis, drama teacher, was responsible for the years that EDSS was pretty much the top drama school in Ontario.

“I want people also to have a lot of fun reading these stories. There’s a lot of humour in it. Malcolm’s story about the walk on the education centre is only one. There’s a lot of funny, funny stories. It’s not heavy – the stories are about three or four pages long, there are 50 of them.

It’s reading that you can pick up and put down,” said Silcox.

To bring the Legendary Lancers into fruition, Morgan met with Silcox shortly before EDSS celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2014.

A frequent author of historical biographies, Silcox wrote her first book

in 2009 titled Roads of the Heart. The book was a collection of profiles on people born and raised in the WaterlooWilmot area she described as having “gone the road less travelled” in their lives.

She produced a few more full-length biographies, including of local midwife Elsie Cressman.

Before Legendary Lancers, she wrote biographical collections for other schools, including Waterloo Oxford, where she was a teacher, St. Mary’s and Eastwood.

“I decided that that was it. I was done, I had other things I wanted to do,” said Silcox about after she wrote her Eastwood book.

“And then I thought, you know there’s so many really, really exceptional people that went to Elmira District Secondary School, including Malcolm Gladwell, who is only one of many people who have become world-class individuals, and so I gave in and I did one last one.”

So, about three-anda-half years ago, Silcox

began working on the collection that would become Legendary Lancers.

Principal Morgan organized a committee of EDSS retirees to brainstorm people for Silcox to interview for her book.

After the writing was complete, Silcox returned her manuscript to EDSS where a class of Grade 12 students edited and organized the work. The book was sent to a professional production company for some final tweaks, and is now ready for its debut at the book launch November 19.

Silcox says she is hoping the book will inspire residents to cherish the local school’s strong tradition of academics.

“Elmira has always had an amazing reputation for scholarship, for excellent teaching, and people need to be really proud when they read the book.

The book isn’t about the school, but the school is in the background,” she said.

Silcox notes just how valuable growing up in the townships and attending EDSS was to the people

she profiled.

“They all appreciated the feeling of living in Elmira as kids and feeling safe. I mean they were ready to leave once they graduated from high school, right? But everyone of them said it was a place where we all felt we could be safe and grow healthily and it was a good surrounding,” said Silcox.

The book launch is being held at EDSS Sunday at 2 p.m. Silcox will be there, as well as a number of other EDSS alumni.

Anyone interested in attending is asked to contact the school ahead of time to confirm. Otherwise, those hoping to pick up a copy of Legendary Lancers after the date need only head to the EDSS front desk where they will be on sale for $40.

Silcox notes that all the money from the book sales go back to EDSS for further programming.

“I don’t take a penny,” she said.

“Why do I do this? I don’t know, fun. I’m a retired teacher. I feel strongly about education, and so all the sales of the book will go back to the school for a scholarship or for whatever they need the money for.”

Mass shootings a daily occurrence to the south ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER SHOOTING. The details are still sketchy, but a shooter in northern California killed four and wounded 10 others in a seemingly random incident Tuesday.

The one-a-day remark isn’t hyperbole, as there have already been more than 300 mass shootings in the U.S. so far this year. In 2016, by year’s end there were 483 mass shootings, defined by the FBI as involving three or more victims.

In the past couple of months, the U.S. has seen two of the top 10 deadliest shootings in its modern history.

On October 1, 58 people were killed and more than 500 wounded when a gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. And just last week, 26 people were killed when a man opened fire in a small church in the rural Texas town of Sutherland Springs.

The mass shootings grab the headlines, but gun violence happens routinely each day in the States. According to the Brady Campaign, a gun-control organization, each year an average of 108,476 people in America are shot in murders, assaults, suicides and suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, or by police intervention. Of those, 32,514 die – 11,294 are murdered, 19,992 people kill themselves, 561 people are killed unintentionally, 414 are killed by police intervention, and 254 die but intent is not known.

That works out to 297 shootings each day, of which 89 people die from the gun violence.

Still, Americans can easily get their hands on all kinds of weapons, including the assault rifles. And any attempt at a rationale discussion about gun control is immediately shut down by corporately owned politicians.

Stand your ground. Open carry. Second Amendment.

The gun debate is incomprehensible to many of us in this country. Controls and bans seem self-evident, but are a no-go in the U.S. of A. While each mass shooting brings gun-control advocates out, it also fuels the sale of even more guns – with no irony, many think it’ll make them safe, while others fear that there might actually be a crackdown on their ability to buy that assault rifle with the grenade-launcher attachment. Experience shows that no such thing will happen.

Despite the outpouring of emotion that followed the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting, for instance, and despite polls and surveys showing the overwhelming majority of Americans supporting tighter restrictions on gun ownership, nothing has been done. If the death of 6- and 7-year-old children doesn’t generate action, nothing will.

With every incident, some people call for further restrictions on gun ownership. On the other side of the argument, gun advocates, led by the National Rifle Association (NRA) make excuses and argue for greater access to guns, saying armed civilians could have gunned down such criminals before their killing sprees continued. Some even push for heavily armed schools and churches.

The latter arguments are commonplace in the U.S., where Second Amendment – the right to keep and bear arms – issues abound. In Canada, the notion seems ridiculous: having more guns at hand increases the risk.

It would be far more likely for someone to see red, snap and use a readily available gun than it would be for someone to be faced with a murderer on a shooting rampage.

Today’s another day. Expect more of the same.

The Middle East: there are not enough wars yet WORLD AFFAIRS “When all the Arabs and the Israelis agree on one thing, people should pay attention. We should stop this Iranian takeover,” said Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu last month. So we’re paying attention now, and we even know where the next war will start: Lebanon.

That seems unfair, as Lebanon’s last civil war lasted 15 years, killed around 200,000 people (out of a population of only four million), and only ended in 1990. Couldn’t they hold this one somewhere else? Unfortunately, no. All the other venues are taken.

Iraq is still fully booked.

The fight against ISIS is almost over, but the struggle between the Arabs and the Kurds has only just got started again. It never really stops for long.

Bashar al-Assad’s forces, the Russians, and Shia volunteers from Iran and Lebanon are winning the war in Syria, but it will be

at least another year before they suppress all rebel resistance.

Yemen’s airspace is too congested, with Saudi, Emirati, Kuwaiti, Jordanian and Egyptian planes bombing the living daylights out of the Houthi rebels who hold most of the country (and anybody else who happens to be nearby).

No real room for another war there.

Both Saudi Arabia and Israel want to take Iran down a peg or two, and their efforts to get the United States to do it for them have not yet succeeded.

Trump is not opposed in principle, but his current obsession is North Korea’s Kim Jong-un.

So the war will have to be in Lebanon, at least at the start. The big Shia militia that controls southern Lebanon, Hezbollah, is closely allied to Shia Iran, and it’s a permanent nuisance along Israel’s northern border, so it’s a suitable place to start rolling back Iran’s influence in the region.

Lebanon is a particularly good choice from Saudi Arabia’s point of view because it’s the Israelis who would have to do the actual

fighting there. (Saudi Arabia does not share a border with Lebanon.) But if Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman is really serious about curbing Iran’s power, his own troops are eventually going to have to take on the job of cleansing Syria of Iranian influence.

You only have to say that sentence aloud to realize that this project is going to end in tears for the Saudis, the Israelis and (if they get sucked into it) the Americans. There is no way that the inexperienced Saudi army is going to drive battle-hardened Hezbollah and Iranian militia troops out of Syria.

Actually, there is no way that the Israeli army is going to drive Hezbollah out of southern Lebanon either. In Israel’s last war with the organization in 2006, Hezbollah’s troops fought the Israeli army to a standstill in southern Lebanon. The Israeli air force smashed up Lebanon’s infrastructure, but Israel ended up accepting a ceasefire with Hezbollah and withdrawing its troops in a hurry.

Sunni Arab leaders and Israel’s prime minister

have talked themselves into the paranoid delusion that Iran has a grand plan to establish its domination over the whole region and must be stopped by force of arms.

First Iran established close links with the Shia political parties and militias that now dominate Iraq. Then it crossed Iraqi territory to save the Shia ruler of Syria from a revolt by the Sunni majority in that country. Next was distant Yemen, where the Shia tribes of the north, the Houthi, overran most of the country with Iranian help. And now the Shia militia Hezbollah has gained a powerful position in the government of Lebanon.

If the Sunnis don’t stop the Iranians now, they’ll all be enslaved. Or something of that sort.

Nonsense. It was George W. Bush who overthrew the centuries-long rule of the Sunni minority in Iraq on the lying pretext that Saddam Hussein was developing ‘weapons of mass destruction.’ The Shias took power in Iraq in a free election, and as the only ShiaDYER | 10

Partisan bickering trumps public good, common sense in U.S. political systems EDITOR'S NOTES The Roy Moore saga playing out in the U.S. is symptomatic of all that is wrong with politics, a cancer not contained to the country south of us.

Moore is the would-be senator from Alabama facing accusations of child molestation and an unsavoury fixation on high school girls when he was in his 30s and a district attorney in the state. Later, he was the chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, an elected position from which he was removed twice for ethics violations.

Despite all of that, he won the primary runoff to become the Republican candidate in a special election next month.

He’s been accused by at least five women of preying on teenage girls in the timeframe when a woman says Moore molested her.

She was 14, Moore was 32.

While some Republicans, including Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell,

have called on Moore to step aside, he has thus far refused. The struggle highlights the abysmal partisanship at play in American politics, not just between Republicans and Democrats but within the Republican party itself, where the hard-right faction owned outright by a few very wealthy people are trying to take over.

For many Republicans, the prospect of losing the seat is worse than having a sexual predator in their caucus.

The party currently holds a 52-48 advantage in the Senate. Losing an Alabama seat would shrink a majority that’s already had problems with major policy issues such as overturning Obamacare. A brand tainted by Donald Trump may have trouble in next year’s midterm elections despite all of the unethical gerrymandering of voting districts that’s been carried out by state representatives owned by the same Koch family-led oligarchs.

in direct opposition to their own best interests. There’s the obvious stuff – the socalled grassroots organization that was created and funded by the billionaire Koch family, which has been working for decades to undermine the public good for its own benefit.

Then there’s the underlying issue of corporatism and consumerism-trumpscitizenship, far more difficult to get on the agenda, let alone resolve.

The problems in the U.S., and to a lesser extent in Canada, are complex.

Partisan bickering and sloganeering won’t help.

Apparently, that’s the best we can do. That’s why we have pundits yelling on TV, ersatz politicians using homey platitudes, and issues reduce to the lowest common denominator.

The crazy-making rhetoric never seems to subside, even after the seemingly-constant election cycle. Such is the polarization in the circus tent that is U.S. politics.

If voters are so polarized that they can’t see the obvious – they’ve truly drunk deeply of the KoolAid – then Americans can

never have a rationale debate about how to move forward.

Of course, that assumes real change is actually a possibility. Keeping the public occupied with mindless partisanship, petty bickering and, above all, pop-culture distractions – hello, Donald, tweeter-inchief – works out just fine for those who are happy with the status quo: the real power elites who have no interest in changing a good thing.

Powerful corporate interests spend billions to influence public policy, from fighting public health care to quashing environmental controls. Their efforts pay off. Need proof? Look at what’s happened after the financial services industry brought the economy to its knees: There have been no real reforms and we’ve seen a return to business as usual – huge profits, big bonuses – even as unemployment remains high, personal debt soars and small businesses struggle.

Look, too, at Trump’s cabinet appointees, all largely unqualified and all working against the public inter-

est in the departments they oversee, from education to the environment.

And who’s footing the bill for the massive debt?

Not the elite – they’ll get tax cuts – but the average taxpayer, including the diehard supporters of those creating the mess in the first place.

Some Americans are aware of this, as indicated by the fact Bernie Sanders continues to top polls as the favourite politician in the country. Typically, he’s the only one with more than 50 per cent approval.

He is the only one speaking the truth to power. The rest are owned by power. It’s for that reason that he’s been portrayed as a marginal player – often by the corporate media – despite a large base of supporters.

For all Trump’s anti-establishment diatribes, he is every bit as beholden to the status quo as the rest. His demagoguery appeals to some – and some of what he says actually makes sense – in much the same way as Sanders’ democratic socialism appeals to others KANNON | 10

rent Republican push for tax breaks to the wealthy and tax increases to the poor and middle class – make for entertaining viewing here. Unfortunately, it’s more amusement than it is the thoughtful political philosophy of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Yet like the accident on the side of the highway, we can’t help but gawk.

As Canadians, we have the luxury of watching at a distance. The sniping between Republicans and Democrats goes on 24 hours a day, every day. It’s fodder for everyone from news channels through the most ardent thanksObama-for-every-evil blog.

What’s playing out next door could be a version of our future. Dumb. Partisan.

Bereft of policies. And the opposite of an engaged citizenry, despite the populist trappings.

Yes, Americans are angry. And scared. They have every right to be, given the state of their economy. But the anger is directed at the wrong targets. Supporters of the Tea Party movement who vote for fringe candidates such as Moore do so

There is absolutely no evidence that the Houthis in Yemen are getting any material assistance from

A great many people will die for nothing if the fullscale Sunni-Shia war that Saudi Arabia (and Netanyahu) currently envisage actually gets going. To the Editor, SATURDAYS ARE NORMALLY A busy day for my family, and last Saturday was no exception. After taking my daughter to an early morning dive class while my husband took our son to hockey, I was left with an open window of time to get some errands done. This is how I found myself to be at a shop on Arthur Street.

Being aware that it was Remembrance Day, I was aware of the time. I happened to be on the phone with my husband discussing supplies we needed when we realized it was 10:59 a.m. and hung up

the phone. As I stood there waiting for a moment of silence to come over the PA system, nothing happened.

The day continued on. I took a moment for myself and continued on with my shopping. As I spotted an employee and stopped to enquire why nothing was done, I got the deer in the headlights look with the response, “we forgot!”

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we do not forget!

Any other time and day we can continue with our lives but for this one moment let us remember those who fought and died for us, and feel blessed we have not had to experience those kinds of wars in recent times.

Despite a depleted lineup, Elmira squad looks good in besting Stratford and Brampton; busy weekend awaits

ONE OF THE CARDINAL rules of deer hunting is this: the minute you have used the tags available to you, you’ll see a better animal walk by, invariably within easy range. And that #@$%! animal will present you with several unimaginably perfect shot opportunities, too.

Don’t get upset with me.

I don’t make up the rules.

This happened to me yesterday. Since it is our firearms season here, I went for a walk on some property where gun hunting is not permitted. I did this intentionally so I would not interfere with any deer hunts currently in progress.

And, since I had already used my tag on a nice 7-point buck in the early archery season, I took along my camera rather than a bow or firearm. I wasn’t looking for deer. All I wanted was some fresh air and a few photos of the wood in autumn.

To make a long story short, I saw a really nice 9-point buck accompanying a doe through a screen of saplings and undergrowth about 60 yards away. So I hid behind a big tree and watched them.

DON’T CALL IT A comeback just yet, but with a pair of wins over the weekend the Elmira Sugar Kings are starting to look like defending Sutherland Cup champions.

Despite being plagued by a slew of injuries and suspensions, the team skated to a 5-4 victory in Stratford before returning home to double up on Brampton 6-3.

With only 13 regulars in the lineup the Kings prevailed in a tough battle Friday night at the Allman Arena in Stratford, edging the second-place Warriors 5-4.

“I thought it was great.

It was a real team win. It didn’t matter who was out of lineup, all that mattered was who we had,” said head coach Trent Brown. “We just competed for a full 60, which was great to see.”

Those out for Friday night’s game included Zach Cameron, Niki Molson, suspended Matt MacKay and injured, Tyler Beauparlant, Kurtis Goodwin and Karson Massey.

“Anytime you are faced with any adversity like we were on Friday, it is good to see guys rise to the occasion and come out the other side with two points,” Brown said. “Those guys working together, sticking with the game plan and executing it is evidence of

the team coming together and buying in.”

The Warriors’ Curtis Abbott put the Kings behind the 8 ball early, scoring just a minute in.

Elmira’s Jeremey Goodwin from Ethan Skinner, Ethan Wiseman evened it up at 7:04, while Stratford answered back shortly after with another to bring the score to 2-1 for the home team.

However, before the end of the first, Wiseman scored on the power play, from Goodwin and Skinner.

The Kings took the lead for the first time when captain Jeff Jordan scored his eleventh of the season.

It was a power play marker from Skinner and Tyler Biles at 6:43 of the second.

Just a couple of minutes later, however, Stratford knotted the score at 3-3, also on the power play.

That’s how the middle frame would end, remaining tied until midway through the third period, when the home team regained the lead.

With just over two minutes to go, the Kings took advantage of a power play when Wiseman scored his second of the game, assisted by Skinner and Goodwin. Tied at 4-4, the two teams looked destined for overtime until Elmira took a too-many-men-

buck bee-lined towards me and posed broadside, unaware and completely still at 15 yards while I took a dozen photos. Then, he just walked off without a care in the world.

It was, of course, the nicest buck I have seen all year. And I now have photos that will haunt me.

This is, to me, the bittersweet part of deer hunting.

Just before you pull the trigger or launch an arrow at a deer, a thought occurs somewhere in the back of your mind that says you’ll

see a better deer some time after you affix your tag on the one you are shooting at.

I generally give it about 30 seconds.

The exception to this rule comes if you pass up on a decent deer. In that case you’ll never see another one for the rest of the season. Again, don’t get mad at me; I don’t make up the rules.

Look, I am not at all unhappy with the buck I took this year. It was a mature, big-bodied animal and the meat is delicious.

But, I will admit, yesterday that buck had me

second guessing my decision to fill my tag early.

Because of that decision, I missed my chance at this bruiser.

This might sound crazy, but if someone came out with a theory that suggests big deer can tell when a person doesn’t have a tag, I wouldn’t call it nonsense.

That deer did everything but waltz around me.

The only positive outcome of this experience is I am now rooting for that deer. I’m hoping that this buck will make it through the rifle season and what is left of the bow season and

avoid predators, disease, starvation and cars too. My reasons are not entirely selfless, however.

You see, I am hoping to meet this same buck next bow season – and, hopefully, he’ll have grown even better antlers by then. In the early bow season, he’ll be more wary and not as reckless as he was. But, if all goes as planned, I will, hopefully, place my tag on him and I’ll definitely be happy.

And, you can be sure, sometime immediately after that, I’ll see a bigger one.

Special teams were a big factor, despite Elmira’s struggles this season. The Kings scored on three of their five power play opportunities, allowing Stratford one goal on six penalty kills.

“We have been practising a lot and going over different options – we want to give the guys a skeleton, an outline of what to use and then it is up to them to make the right decisions and create those opportunities. We want them to use their skill and their vision and their abilities in the zone to give us a true man advantage and utilize that advantage to their ability,” Brown explained of their recent success. “So it is nice to see that come together and it is a shot of confidence for those guys as well.”

Jacks bounce back to post pair of wins over the weekend Victories over New Hamburg and Burford boost Wellesley in the standings, but team faces bigger challenge this weekend STEVE KANNON THE WELLESLEY APPLEJACKS CAME away with their third four-point weekend of the season, defeating New Hamburg Saturday at home before heading to Burford Sunday night for a win over the Bulldogs.

Despite missing some regulars – captain Spencer Brick and leading scorer Shaun Pickering among them – Wellesley’s Jack of all trades, Kyle Soper, stepped up to lead the team in the first of what would be a productive pair of games. Goalie Ryan Porter also played a key role as the Jacks blanked the Firebirds 4-0.

“He is having a really good season ,” said head coach Brad Gerber. “Kyle Soper is definitely one of our leaders and he did a great job for our team on Saturday night, but that’s what we expect from him and that’s what we have been getting from him – he is a big part of our team, for sure. A real leader.”

Halfway through the first, after a bit of a late start, Reade MacInnis got

Wellesley goalie Porter stopped all 39 shots that were tossed his way during the game, giving him his third shutout of the season.

“He did make some really, really good saves when the score was still 2-0 and the game was still within reach for them. That is what we expect from Ryan.

He is a third-year player and he has been playing well for us all season,” Gerber said. “Ryan did a great job in controlling his rebounds and there wasn’t much there for him either.

I think it was a team effort, the defence played well

and Ryan played well.”

All in all though, the game was evidence of the team finding its flow.

“That was one of our better games of playing that patient game and waiting for opportunities. And when our opportunities arose we did capitalize and score goals,” said Gerber of the game. “Obviously there is always something to look at that we can get better at, but there was a lot of positives as well. I thought that we had a pretty good all-round team game Saturday night.”

The following evening saw the Jacks travel to Burford to take on the Bulldogs.

Burford opened up scoring with what would be their only goal of the game five minutes into the frame.

Wellesley’s Liam Hartman (Brady Gerber and Nathan Schlupp) tied it up at 12:05. With just 30 seconds left in the opening period, Alex Uttley extended the lead to 2-1, with Tomas Azzano picking up an assist.

Uttley got his second of the match, shorthanded, unassisted, with just over four minutes to go in the frame. The Jacks went to the room up 4-1.

Mercier capped the scoring with an unassisted goal at 19:32 of the third period, securing the Jacks their ninth win of the season.

“It is a very tough league and for some reason we do have Burford’s number – they gave Woodstock a real tough game the day before, so going into Sunday night’s game we knew we were going to have to play good hockey to win,” said Gerber of the game.

“I thought all of the guys stepped up very well again and it was a good team vic-

Despite having some of his regulars out for the weekend, the coach praised the other players for stepping up in their absence.

“Our other leaders have to step up and be leaders; they have to be our best players,” said Gerber. “It also gives a chance for our young players to get some more ice time that they normally wouldn’t get. So this is their time to step up and show us what they have got as well. Sometimes it can turn out to be a good situation; with some of the veterans out, it gives everyone else a chance to really step up and shine.”

Among those who helped fill in the lines, was 16-year-old defensemen Ethan Januszkiewicz.

“He did a tremendous job. He is only 16 years old and is so composed for a young defenseman – to play at the junior level and be that composed, [I’m] very happy with the way that he played,” he said, noting the success fellow 16-year-old Nolan Hislop had with the team offensively. “It is a good sign for the future. These young guys come into the lineup and they play so well and fit in so well with the rest of the guys.”

Looking forward, the Jacks (9-7-0-1) have a tough weekend ahead of them with a game at home against Paris (11-7-0-1) Friday night, and first-place Ayr (16-3) the following night again at home.

“We’ve got a big weekend coming up. We made up some ground this weekend in the standings – we are a few points behind Paris now with some games in hand,” said Gerber. “Without being said, it’s an important game.

It’s a team we have to beat, a team that is ahead of us, and I am sure the guys will be focused. I think that we are all excited for next weekend’s games.”

Elmira shop owner finds she enjoys being her own boss

Tech advances help fight food fraud

Employee buys the business she worked for, changes name to L.A. Beauty Boutique FAISAL ALI IT’S NOT EVERY DAY that an employee at a clothing store succeeds her boss to become the new owner after only a few years, but that is just such the story for entrepreneur Lori-Anne Dronick. Taking the reins of the former FB and Me fashion shop in downtown Elmira, the new owner is hosting a grand opening this Saturday for her enterprise, L.A. Beauty Boutique.

Dronick did not imagine taking a liking to the expanded pressures of running her own business, but she’s had ample time to grow into the role. Even before she officially took over the business on July 1, Dronick had a good deal of preparation with her former employer, Tami Runstedler, who “groomed” her for the role in the last year, though Dronick did not know it at the time.

“I was kind of just thinking that I wanted my own place, but I just kept saying to myself, ‘I’m not really ready, I don’t know,’” explains Dronick. But when Runstedler approached her to say she was selling the business, and offered Dronick the first opportunity to take over, Dronick decided to finally go for it.

She bought the store along with the stock as is, which allowed her to hit the ground running.

“I just kept it open be-

cause I pretty much bought the stock and everything, and then I’ve just been doing little tweaks here and there when I can. Making it more like me, I guess,” she says of the transition.

The store focuses on carrying a range of women’s clothing that span situations from weddings to business to casual.

“We try to carry a lot of Canadian brands made in Canada. We try to stick with that,” she says. “And age group is pretty much like anywhere from mid20s up to like 70-, 80-yearolds. So it’s a big, wide range.”

Dronick explains that what originally attracted her to the store was the distinct style available at FB and Me, something she’s hoping will continue to bring in new customers.

“I guess what brought me here was, when I go to the mall I find every store pretty much has the exact same thing. Whereas when I came here, it was something different. And then when I wore it, I would always get a ton of compliments. I hear that from customers all the time, too,” she says.

Alongside the merchandise, Dronick inherited a loyal customer-base from FB and Me, as well as the previous store’s reputation in the community, which Dronick is looking to continue.

“We’re very honest with

customers, and I guess a lot of people respect that too. We’re not just trying to make a sale, so we end up making relationships with our customers. Maybe it’s because it’s a smaller town you can do that,” she says.

“But if something doesn’t look good or whatever, we will say, ‘Like no,’” she laughs. “’Go back in the dressing room and try something else on.’”

EVIDENCE IS GROWING THAT we simply can’t trust some business and industry players to be honest and to label food properly.

Fortunately, advances in technology are getting better at exposing fraud, in the same way the sports sector is continually improving its ability to nail cheaters who use performance-enhancing drugs.

One of the biggest developments in this area comes from the University of Guelph, where researchers have created a portable, handheld device that can read DNA and positively identify species in the field.

At the Building Canada sesquicentennial lecture series in Guelph last week, Dr. Amanda Naaum, senior research scientist with the new University of Guelph spin-off company TRU-ID, demonstrated how the portable device she’s working with can give users a yesor-no reading for samples of species whose DNA sequences have been recorded in the University’s Barcode Of Life Database (BOLD).

The database contains the barcodes or gene sequences for 500,000 species. It’s been assembled over the past 15 years as part of an international

ROBERTS: Mislabelling, intentional or otherwise, is a growing problem in need of a solution FROM | 21

effort to barcode all species on the planet, led by the groundbreaking research and development of Guelph’s Prof. Paul Hebert.

In 2003, Hebert proposed DNA barcoding as a way to identify species. It uses a very short genetic sequence from a standard part of the genome, the way a supermarket scanner distinguishes products using the black stripes of the Universal Product Code.

Currently, fish are the focus of Naaum’s work.

She’s helping retailers and distributors try to prevent mislabelling, which is rampant in the sector. In fact, Naaum’s colleague, Prof. Bob Hanner, says research by the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario at the university shows about one-quarter of all fish is mislabeled.

It was Hanner and his team who likewise found high levels of meat mislabelling in store products they analyzed in the lab this fall, which we covered here in an earlier column.

Naaum says onsite analysis with portable technology like the BioMeme two3 molecular diagnostic device she’s using holds great promise. With just one swab from a sample (fish, in this case), she can collect enough cells to run an analysis onsite, using a smart phone app as an interface.

The app contains species-specific test information. Naaum designs tests that search for a specific region of DNA – an even smaller portion of the DNA

barcode – that is unique to the target species. It generates fluorescence if that species is present, using sequences from BOLD as a reference.

If that DNA is absent, no fluorescence is generated.

That means the sample is not a match.

In this way, samples can be rapidly screened to determine if they are the species that they are supposed to be, or if they contain certain contaminant species, all in under two hours.

These tests can be easily

run by non-experts using simple kits that have all of the materials and instructions for identifying a specific species of fish from DNA extraction to interpret results.

“DNA sequencing in the lab is powerful, but doesn’t provide actionable information in real time,” says Hanner. “While more limited in its scope of application, the handheld platform addresses this challenge to meet the needs of industry and regulators.”

Naaum says food retail-

ers could use the device onsite in their distribution warehouses to make sure the food shipments they get in are authentic, before they’re packaged for the public. Or, in the case of fish, inspectors could take it dockside to test if labelling is accurate, before imports get repackaged and shipped widely.

TRU-ID is also expanding onsite testing for meat, natural health products and spices, other areas where mislabelling have been found.

FASHION: Having taken over the store, she’s been busy making personal touches FROM | 21

Still sharing the premises is Shelley Cassel and Shelley’s Salon. People, both men and women, can still come and get their tonsorial needs taken care of by the expert hairdresser, who is situated within the clothing store.

“We’re a team,” says Cassel. “Yes, I’d say we’re definitely a team. We have to be.

Her customers and my customers use the front door and it works well because my clients when they’re here shop and browse.”

She notes there’s a natu-

ral synergy between the salon and the clothing store which works out quite well for both their businesses.

“They think haircuts cost $400 – their husbands,” she says of her customers.

“Because they get their hair done and then they come and buy clothes,” adds Cassel as both women laugh.

Cassel will also be at the grand opening, with a collection of hair products available as prizes to those who come by.

Clothing, hairdressing; and now make-up artistry will be on offer, as Dronick is bringing her expertise

as a make-up artist to the store. Formerly a part-time venture of hers when she was not working at the store, her make-up business is being incorporated as a new feature right into L.A. Beauty Boutique’s retinue of goods and services, with a brand-new make-up room in the works.

“I’m busy almost every weekend doing weddings and stuff like that, so I needed something instead of doing it out of my house,” explains Dronick about her make-up business.

“So now she’s going to bring her make-up here,

which I think is a good fit for all of us too,” adds Cassel.

Dronick says she offers a variety of make-up services, from bridal to parties to holidays, to even Halloween special-effects. She also teaches lessons in applying make-up.

But clothing is still front and center at the L.A. Beauty Boutique, and Dronick is still learning the ropes of running her own business.

“So far, so good, yes. No complaints no [stress],” she says. “I’m not stressed, like that’s what a lot of people think ... and I’m like ‘no’,

this is like the one thing in my life I’ve actually been the most comfortable and relaxed [with]. So it’s good. It’s a great feeling.”

Dronick admits that she did not expect to enjoy owning her own business.

“I didn’t think I would like it, to be honest. I think that’s why I pushed it off for so long, but it’s actually going very well and I really like it.”

The grand opening of L.A. Beauty Boutique is this Saturday (November 18) during regular store hours.

A show that’ll put the country in Christmas Naomi Bristow, the yodelin’ cowgirl, brings her holiday show to the Commercial Tavern on Sunday afternoon

Christmas is the best time of the year for Naomi Bristow, who’s busy touring her holiday show just now, making a stop at Maryhill’s Commercial Tavern Sunday, where she’ll be accompanied by guitarist Joe Howe.

STEVE KANNON THOUGH NOT DESTINED TO stick around, there was snow on the ground as last week rolled into this. Perhaps in response, lights started to glow on more houses. Stores, already decked out, have upped the quota of Christmas songs in the mix. There’s no doubt the season is getting into full swing.

Music being a big part of the yuletide festivities, there are concerts aplenty.

On Sunday afternoon, Naomi Bristow will be sharing her abundant enthusiasm for the holiday season when she brings

her Homespun Christmas show to the Commercial Tavern in Maryhill.

The young singer will be performing some traditional stuff, some Christmas favourites and some gospel tunes. And, of course, there’ll be yodelling in her signature style.

“I’m going to do some standards. And some gospel, which fits with the season,” she said. “And I’ll be doing a duet with Paul Weber – I always love performing with Paul when I’m there.”

She’ll be accompanied

by Joe Howe on guitar.

“Christmas is my favourite time of year, and I’ll

make sure everyone knows it,” she laughed of the holiday zeal she’ll be serving up to the audience.

The Maryhill show is one of a dozen or so stops she’ll be making on the run-up to Christmas.

The performances draw on her 2015 album Yodelin’ Christmas, which includes classics like O Holy Night, and country songs like The Christmas Shoes and A Christmas Letter, along with a duet with Whisperin’ Bill Anderson doing his song Po Folks Christmas.

“Probably my favourite Christmas song is The Christmas Shoes, and I

like it from the kid’s view, which is how I do it.”

Bristow will also sing her Christmas version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, which has become popular on YouTube.

The show will feature Bristow’s distinctive yodelling style of singing, which sounds polished beyond her years. That perhaps comes from starting out so young – she released her first album (Cowboy Sweetheart) in 2008 at the tender age of 11. People took note, her performances winning her accolades and awards, including twice being named the Western Music

Association’s “Youth Yodeler of the Year.”

Now a second-year college student, she continues to juggle music and school.

“It has been difficult, but I’ve made it work,” she said, joking that it’s been a little bit easier of late given that Ontario’s colleges have been shut down by a labour dispute.

Bristow makes her first return to the Maryhill venue after a two-year absence; her last show there also a Christmas concert.

Already pumped up for the holiday season, she’s looking forward to the Christmas shows, which

will be followed by some family merrymaking at Christmas.

After the shows are done, she’ll be enjoying some downtime at the family farm in Beeton.

“I have a big family, and we have the whole family out at the farm,” she said.

“My mom and I really decorate the place – it’s a complete conversion to Christmas.”

A Homespun Christmas makes it way to the Commercial Tavern in Maryhill November 19 at 3 p.m.

Eccentric characters abound, providing plenty of laughs in Daddy’s Girl Theatre Wellesley staging another production of a Gary Ray Stapp play, quirky bits and all, with shows starting tonight FAISAL ALI AN ANGEL, A SHIRTLESS man, and the ghost of a lady living in a picture frame all walk into a diner and ... No, that’s not the start to strange joke, but rather the premise of an even more bizarre production being staged by Theatre Wellesley this weekend.

Daddy’s Girl is another of playwright Gary Ray Stapp’s quirky, yet heartwarming stories to be brought to life by Theatre Wellesley. It follows on the popularity of last year’s Stapp play, The Trouble with Cats. Laughs will be had and tears shed, say the cast, as this year’s play boasts the same collection of Stapp’s signature comedic stylings.

Bernard is the curmudgeonly but well-meaning owner of Maudie’s Diner, around which the story, and all the characters, center. Twenty-five years ago, Bernard lost his wife Maude, who passed away, as well as his daughter, who was given up for adoption.

“Bernard, he comes across as a bit of a grouch, but I think everyone learns along the way why he’s been grouchy for 25 years,” said Dave McNorgan, who is playing the lead char-

acter. “He’s lamenting his long-lost daughter that he gave up for adoption after his wife died.”

“It is now 25 years and, sort of, the universe is coming together and he is really hoping to find his daughter,” explains Rhonda Caldwell, producer and cast member.

With the help of his deceased wife, who has taken up residence in a picture frame, the patrons of his diner, and a little divine intervention in the form of a scurrilous angel named Michael, Bernard must seek out his daughter and, maybe, find his happiness along the way. Though not without first jumping through a few hoops, navigating several cases of mistaken identity, and contending with the quirky people who frequent his establishment.

“Oh my gosh, our characters in the diner!” said Caldwell.

Fighting for Bernard’s affections is the endlessly frustrated Darlynn, played by producer Judy Johnson Betsy, who routinely finds herself unable to attract the despondent diner owner’s attention. Betsy, the clumsy waitress played

by Jamie Russell, routinely runs amuck of her boss, and is also secretly pine over by another of the cast, the ordinarily articulate yet painfully shy Walter, played by Grant Chapman.

Visiting the diner, there’s Big Earle Ella, a “bikerchick” played by Karen Reger, and her daughter Lizzie, an aspiring singer played by Mary Crawford, who is looking for a venue to break out into the big leagues. Lizzie is ordinarily the shy type, but when she throws off her glasses she becomes the star-act entertainer inside.

The 40 hectare property is currently developed with a 316 square metre maintenance shop / office, 509 square metre storage shed, 238 square metre seed and chemical storage shed, 297 square metre equipment storage shed, livestock barn and a single detached dwelling. The property has operated as a custom farming operation for the past 23 years.

The applicant is requesting a site specific zoning amendment to the Agricultural zone for the following: 1. To recognize the existing custom farming operation, being a farm related service for hire, providing support with specific agricultural operations like planting, harvesting, pest and weed control, crop delivery, agricultural technology applications, farm/crop management consulting and similar farming operations to help the farm owner meet their farming objectives, as a farm related business: • to permit an expansion of the existing shop to a maximum of 825 square metres; • to allow associated farm uses such as the storage of fertilizer, seed grains, insecticides and pesticides; and • to permit truck, trailer and farm machinery parking ahead of the farm shed; • all within a defined area of operation of approximately 1.2 hectares.

Shannon Nash, daughter of David and Holly Teahen of Elmira, wife to Kyle and mother of Hudson and Jack, received her Doctorate in History from the University of Toronto on November 9th, 2017.

Her studies focussed on the perception and reality of Al Qaeda sleepers as a threat to American national security.

Shannon plans to continue her writing and teaching.

on completing a PhD in Theology from the University of Manchester Congratulations as well to his loving wife Laurie and family for their support through a long study journey which involved many trips across the pond. Graham is continuing his pastoral duties at Bethel Evangelical Missionary Church in New Dundee.

Aberle, Ruth Eleanor Died unexpectedly on Saturday, November 11, 2017, surrounded by her loving family at Grand River Hospital, Kitchener. Ruth Aberle, in her 89th year, of Elmira, was formerly of RR 1, West Montrose. Predeceased by her beloved husband Bill Aberle (2005) with whom she shared 53 years of marriage. Devoted and loving mother of Larry and Kathryn of Kitchener, John and Linda of Mildmay, Diane and Steve Watts of Paris, Janet and Peter Bingeman of Petersburg, David and Amber of Guelph, and Stephen of Elmira.

Cherished grandmother of 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Sister of Bill (Fran) Grosz of Palmerston. Sister-in-law of Murray (Darlene) Aberle of Elmira and Chuck Dillon of Port Elgin. Also survived by her nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Ananias and Mary (Stroh) Grosz of Floradale, daughter-in-law Jan Dingwall, and sister-in-law Marie Dillon. Ruth was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Elmira.

She was a longtime member of “Club 42”, Winterbourne Women’s Institute, Tops, Farm Safety, 4H, Elmira Fall Fair, and Elmira Seniors. Her interests included knitting, reading, gardening, and canning. She loved animals – especially cats. She always welcomed visits from young and old. Visitation for relatives and friends was held on Wednesday, November 15 and will be held on Thursday, November 16 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira. A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 27 Mill St., Elmira, with Rev. Richard Frey officiating. Interment in Memory Gardens, Breslau.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or K-W Humane Society would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy. The family extend a sincere thank you to the caring staff at Chartwell, Elmira, and to the compassionate caring team at Grand River Hospital Emergency Department and ICU.

Family service took place on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, then to Martins Mennonite Meeting House for burial and public service.

FAISAL ALI OVER THE COURSE OF the summer, Rev. Scott Sinclair of Elmira’s Gale Presbyterian Church took a spiritual journey – a pilgrimage – along the Camino De Santiago De Compestela in northern Spain. He’s back, and on Saturday he will be sharing his experiences and insights at his church.

The presentation is being hosted as a fundraiser, along with a dinner of Spanish and Mexican delicacies, and a silent auction of some 100 items donated by businesses and community members. The money is being raised in part for an in-house celebration of Gale Presbyterian’s 150th anniversary in 2018.

“But the bulk of the money raised at this event will go to a ministry that

the Presbyterian Church has out in British Columbia: the Cariboo House Ministry,” said Sinclair.

“We’ve been associated with them for many years, sending out some clothing and winter gear for them every year, but this year they were very damaged and affected by the forest fires. And so they need some assistance and some help and fire relief, and so the bulk of the money from this event is going to go towards that mission.”

The presentation itself will focus on Sinclair’s pilgrimage across northern Spain though, replete with stories and photographs and a core of moral truth.

“It’s a pilgrimage, a spiritual pilgrimage that has been established since the 9th century, and it’s getting a fair bit of a resurgence,

a fair bit of popularity in the last few decades,” explained Sinclair about the journey. The path cut through a variety of landscapes, he said, from mountainous regions to plains and prairies; and every 20 to 30 kilometers or so were the towns and cities that travellers would sojourn in along the Camino.

This was the second time Sinclair had attempted the Camino after he suffered an injury back in 2008 during his first trip. He managed to complete the walk that time around, despite the injury. Unfortunately, Sinclair suffered another injury this time around that limited his ability to fully travel along the Camino.

“I sustained an injury at about the 500-km mark, so it became much more

of a spiritual exercise for me,” he said, though he made use of a rented car to keep up with his party and to travel to other sites unreachable by foot.

“I still wanted to make a spiritual if not a physical, [pilgrimage] out of this. So I stayed there; I did a lot of meditation, and a lot visiting to holy and relic sites and things like that, so I still feel like my Camino was worthwhile.”

However, while his journey was twice hampered by injury, Sinclair says there’s a lesson in it that he hopes to impart during his presentation Saturday.

“What I hope to get across on Saturday is kind of that. We in our spiritual lives can embark upon grandiose and interesting things, and they might not turn out the way we want them to. But we can still

Church has been bringing the nativity scene to life for 22 years, with performance set for next weekend ALI WILSON Emphasizing the reason for the season, St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Perth East (North Easthope) is welcoming all to their 22nd annual nativity re-creation, Journey to Bethlehem.

For the past 21 years the church has hosted the nativity re-creation with live farm animals at the Bethlehem stable, aka the church’s red shed, on the last Friday and Saturday evening in November.

Journey started as a onenight performance gift to the community, the cast and crew of up to 50 people put on a show for anywhere from 150 on the Friday evening to 200 on Saturday night.

Karen Pilecki, who is working with the committee as the director this year has been the Angel Gabriel in the re-creation since its beginning.

“It is just fun, and for me it’s my start to the Christmas season. I’m not ready for Christmas until Journey has happened,” said Pilecki.

gift, and it’s something that brings the whole community together. Whether you belong to the Mennonite church, a Lutheran church, a Catholic church, the Christmas story is the Christmas story and we all celebrate the same gift,” she said. “We have all been given the gift, we are celebrating the gift together.”

This year, because of their pastor’s work at other churches within the community, the Journey to Bethlehem will include not only members of the St. James congregation, but also volunteers from two other churches, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Wellesley and Zion Lutheran St. Agatha.

“The Christmas story, it is what it is. The reading from the Bible, it is what it is. The hymns are what they are,” she said. “It is a way, I think, for the community who comes and as well as our church community, our church family, to be involved with other churches. Elmira musician Jeff Poolton shifts into Christmas mode with Songs of the Season ALI WILSON After a yearlong break, local Elmira musician Jeff Poolton is back with his eleventh annual charity Christmas concert, Songs of the Season.

The show features selections from his holiday album, The Gifts of Christmas, which was recorded after a nudge from his father a number of years ago and has since solidified his connection to the genre.

Influenced by things like The Tea Party and Led Zeppelin, his style can be described as having a Middle Eastern feel to it, apropos to the subject matter.

“The response has been huge to the Christmas album, in particular, so one of the other perks to the Songs of the Season concert is that it gives me a chance to showcase my versions of traditional Christmas songs,” he said.

What ultimately brought about a change was how unsafe it had become to have a foreign object on the field, with the likelihood that an idly lying glove could alter the outcome of a game due to an injury or error.

Rule #3.10 states: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Members of the offensive team shall carry all gloves and other equipment off the field and to the dugout while their team is at bat.

A. Typically, big animals run (swim, fly) faster than small ones. Plotting the measured top speeds of land animals versus their weights yields a smooth curve, with speeds systematically increasing from teeny mites all the way up through rabbits and goats.

The animal simply tires out before its big lumbering body gets up to â&#x20AC;&#x153;fullâ&#x20AC;? speed (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nature Ecology & Evolutionâ&#x20AC;?).

Applying Hirtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s equation to extinct animals, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estimated that a 6,000 kg Tyrannosaurus would top out at a brisk 17 mph!

The church uses the red shed on the church property as the Bethlehem stable to bring the biblical story of Christâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birth to the community. Having a shed in that location for more than 100 years, still sporting the iron rings where horses were tied during church services

on the inside, provides an atmosphere to transport observers back in time as they watch from planks supported by straw bales. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It makes the manger, the stable, the Christmas story kind of come alive,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The venue is perfect. We love it, we love the fact that we have this red shed with the wood beams that we put candles in, its hay bale and plank seating is there. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have animals â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we really hope that the donkey brays at some point during the performance because it just should, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just all

a part of it. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a part of seeing the community all together in a celebration of the same thing.â&#x20AC;?

SEASONAL SONGS: He’s no stranger to performing for a cause FROM | 31

to send the youth of St. George’s Anglican Church to a conference called CLAY (Canadian Lutheran and Anglican Youth), which looks to let youth explore their faith in unique and exciting ways.

“It is a big conference that happens every two years where kids across the country gather somewhere in Canada. Basically they call it a pilgrimage

to wherever they are going, and then they have this huge conference with talks and music and all kinds of activities that are geared towards inspiring youth and their faith,” he explained.

Having been held in BC in 2014 and PEI in 2016, the conference is heading to Ontario, specifically Thunder Bay, for 2018.

Emceed by his brother, Reverend Paul Poolton, the evening is a mix of solo

performances, audience participation and a little bit of choir performances from St. Georges of Forest Hill.

“People really enjoy the overall feeling – it is a way to get ready for Christmas,” he said. “I have always seen it as the kickoff for a lot of people for the Christmas season, so we just try to have a setting where people can sit and enjoy a Christmas concert and on occasion when they seem to need to have a bit of a

stretch we stand them up and get them to sing something.”

Although the concert is free to attend, Poolton says they pass around the hat for a free-will offering to help generate funds for the cause.

Songs of the Season will be happening next Saturday, November 25, started at 7:30 p.m. at St. George’s of Forest Hill Anglican Church in Kitchener, a save the date can be found through a Facebook event on www.facebook.com/JeffPooltonMusic.

The people met along the path, pilgrims and travel-

lers from all over the world, was just a bonus. “Each of them has their fascinating stories, their interesting personalities; it’s just a tremendous experience.”

All in, Hibma estimates he walked close to 1,000 km over those 35 days.

Hibma, Sinclair and third member of their group, Turner, will be

at the Gale Presbytarian Church November 18 to share their stories and impart their gained wisdom.

The event starts with a supper at 5:30 p.m., followed by a presentation at 7 p.m. To join in is $15 for those 16 years of age and up, or $30 per family, while youth 15 and under get in by voluntary donation.

Crème Brûlée 2 cups 35% cream 1 vanilla bean 5 egg yolks 1/2 cup sugar Extra sugar for sprinkling Your favourite fresh berries

In small pot, bring cream to a scalding point. This means tiny bubbles start to form around the pot.

Remove from heat.

Split vanilla bean in half and scrape out the seeds.

Place in the warm cream as well as the bean shell.

Cover the pot with a lid and allow to steep for about 20 minutes, then remove bean from cream.

In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until the mix is light yellow

and ribbons form.

Whisk in about 4 oz of the cream mixture at a time to the egg mix. This tempering of the eggs will avoid the eggs cooking too fast.

Pour into china ramekins or small tea cups. In a baking pan add water about 3” deep. Then add the cups into the water.

Place in oven at 325 F for approximately 25 minutes. The middle will jiggle slightly but the outside will be firm. Allow to cool.

Place in fridge until ready.

Place 1-1/2 Tbsp. of sugar on top of ramekins. Light a torch on low and slowly caramelized the sugar until browned. It helps to do the browning in small circles.

Garnish with fresh berries and serve.

A crafty character, E.L. is out to get her hands on the recipe to Bernard’s secret sauce. The only other person with the recipe, besides Bernard, is his daughter, hidden in a locket he had given her all those years ago, and E.L. hopes to use the secret to impersonate the long-lost daughter, and make herself the heir to his fortune. Alex, played Kevin Wakem, meanwhile is the smooth-talker with a longline of ex-girlfriends, of which E.L. is one.

Finally, thrown into the febrile mix is the benevolent, if mischievous, angel

Michael, played by Ted Shier.

“The thing about Michael is only Bernard can see Michael,” said Caldwell.

“So Michael is actually there to help with this divine intervention, to help them find their daughter, but he’s only going to do it with a sense of humor.

He’s not going to make it easy.” Michael appears first in a brilliant white suit to Bernard, and then in the guise of an inconspicuous homeless man, sprinkling a bit of the fantastical into the story.

It’s a play with plenty of quirk and chemistry, and plenty of heart.

“You’re going to laugh

and you’re going to cry.

These people are very talented and it’s a wellwritten show,” said director Smerchinski confidently about the play.

Daddy’s Girl is running over four days with four showings at the Wellesley Community Centre, starting this evening (Thursday) at 8 p.m., followed by a show tomorrow at the same time.
