ith just a week to go in the nomination period, things are finally starting to heat up in Woolwich: for the first time in more than a decade, there are races in every ward.

The latest entrants are Julie-Anne Herteis in Ward 1 and Eric Schwindt in Ward 2.

Herteis joins incumbent Ruby Weber and newcomer Jim David in the battle for the two Elmira seats up for grabs Oct. 25.

“I heard the call for change and decided it was time to stand up and do something,” said Herteis of what prompted her to enter the race. “I think we need a fresh start.”

Elmira has seen significant growth in its population, with many young families settling into the new subdivisions, and it’s time for council to be more active in shaping the future of the community, she said.

Council needs to discuss issues and policies in more detail to determine which course is best for the residents and the future of the township, she explained.

If elected, she would take a consultative approach, asking people for their input and advocating on their behalf, at the council table but also at the regional level and beyond. That would include working to take advantage of Woolwich’s proximity to the so-called technology triangle.

For David, the emergence of another candidate to make it a race in Ward 1 is precisely why he got involved in the first place.

“I just wanted an election, more than anything. To make sure [candidates] don’t get there on a free pass,” said the 52-year-old Elmira man, the first candidate to file papers for next month’s municipal election.

WARD 1 role for council as the guardian of the public interest. On issues such as gravel pits and the proposed biogas plant in Elmira, for instance, councillors should first and foremost stand up for their constituents’ needs, he said.

“The rights of the residents have to be protected at all costs.”

This is the first run at political office for David, who has lived in town for 15 years with his wife Kim Dixon and two children. He’s an employee at Emerson EGS Electrical Group plant in Elmira.

WARD 2 cumbent Mark Bauman, acclaimed to the position in the last election, faces a challenge from Eric Schwindt.

Schwindt, 38, is running on a platform of fiscal responsibility and a more robust, outgoing council. The goal is to be more assertive in favour of the residents, he said, noting council has been too passive, with much of its agenda dictated by staff.

“Staff tends to lead– that’s the wrong way around.”

He sees a stronger role for councillors as a voice for Woolwich at Water-

loo Region and Queen’s Park. On the issue of light rail transit, for example, he said the region is ready to bet too much money on a single project when there are other priorities.

“We need to watch our finances. We are in a new reality today, and need to manage our finances accordingly. As citizens and taxpayers of Woolwich, we need our township to use our tax dollars more efficiently.

And that responsibility lies with council.”

Locally, the township has spent a considerable amount of money on capital projects, perhaps too much at once. Now, the key is to manage those facilities wisely, to make sure operating and program expenses don’t get out of hand, said Schwindt.

“Sometimes less is more in government,” he said. “We shouldn’t be trying to do things if we really don’t need them.”

Stephanie and three daughters on a farm north of Elmira. He currently serves as president of the Waterloo County Pork Producers Association, secretary of the Ontario Pork Industry Council and director on the Ontario Swine Health Advisory Board.

Other newcomers to the municipal election scene include Maryhill’s Bonnie Bryant, who’s running against longtime incumbent Murray Martin in Ward 3, and mayoral candidate Todd Cowan, who’s challenging incumbent Bill Strauss and former councillor Pat McLean.

Each of the first-time candidates has pointed to a feeling of change in the air, citing feedback from other residents in the township.

“The overwhelming response is that we need to have an election to get new voices heard,” said Schwindt.

“It’s nice to hear people are open to change right now.”

Flashing lights to enhance stop signs at Elmira intersection Steve Kannon

troublesome intersection in Elmira, the scene of several accidents, is about to get flashing lights to go with the stop signs some drivers seem to have difficulty obeying.

The signs on Union Street will be augmented where the road meets South Field Drive.

Woolwich’s engineering department has in fact already made improvements, increasing the size of

the stop signs, adding so-called tiger tail indicators on the posts and painting “stop ahead” warning on the pavement leading to the intersection. Still, that hasn’t done the trick, director of engineering and planning

Turning lemons into lemonade

> Feds pledge $265M for transit

Recognizing cancer touches everyone, young Elmira girl pours herself into fundraising

ifty cents can’t buy very much these days, but it can get you a cool glass of lemonade at the end of Jordyn Davis’ driveway.

But she isn’t saving up for a new bike or a new backpack for school. She is donating all the money she makes to help children with cancer.

“I don’t want to keep the money,” she said adamantly. “It’s for a very good cause.”

The seven-year-old Elmira resident – she’ll be eight in October – has been selling lemonade at the end of her driveway for the past two weeks, and has created quite a buzz around town.

She raised more than $70 in the first two days alone, including the $5 from her own piggy-bank to add to the collection.

“Everyone has been touched by cancer,” she said, adding that she just wants to help kids who are sick feel better. Jordyn lost two great-grandparents to cancer, and her grandmother is battling the disease

right now.

“Some people ask me if I know any kids with cancer, and I say no, luckily.”

Next Friday, Jordyn and her mother, Carey, will head down to the cancer clinic at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener to donate the money.

“We asked to meet the kids,” said Carey, “but their immune systems are so poor, we decided to just go to the foundation for a picture and present them with a cheque.”

They’re not sure what the hospital will do with the money, but the important thing is that they have it.

“She wants it to go to children’s cancer,” Carey explained. “Whether it goes to funding or research, I don’t think she really cares one way or another.”

Jordyn was inspired to start fundraising when she heard about a friend who had a similar idea. She initially tried to sell what she calls “knick knacks” – balloons, stickers, and pictures she drew herself – but quickly decided that

And with the recent spell of hot weather, the switch was right on the money.

“A lot of people have been giving more than just 50 cents,” says Carey. “One of the mothers I do daycare for gave $20. People are really generous when they know it’s for a good cause.”

So far, they have raised $133.12, but Jordyn hasn’t done it all on her own. Her friend Adriane Uttley has been helping her pour the lemonade, and another friend, Katie Carreon, helped make the signs.

Jordyn is preparing to

head into Grade 3 and her two favourite classes – gym, and recess – but as her fundraising efforts for this summer wind down she is already making plans to do it all again next year, but for a different cause that is much closer to home.

She is going to donate all of her money next summer to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, because her father Rob passed away on Mar. 12, 2009 after suffering a heart attack.

“I’m really proud of her,” Carey said with a smile.

“She took this all upon herself.”

Woolwich to push province for biogas meeting Public needs information, a chance to provide input, say councillors Steve Kannon

aying the community is still confused about plans for a biogas plant in Elmira, Woolwich councillors will press the provincial government to convene a public meeting about the issue.

been hearing repeatedly from residents eager for information about the status of the project. Some still expect the municipality will be part of the decision-making process, unaware previous Official Plan and zoning bylaw issues at the site are no longer relevant: the

province is the sole judge of alternative energy projects.

Given that confusion, a detailed explanation is in order, said Coun. Mark Bauman, noting residents need more information, an opportunity to provide input and the chance to have their questions answered.

“The public is entitled to another public meeting.”

The company behind the proposals, Bio-En Power Inc., has already met Ministry of the Environment requirements to hold two public meetings, however, noted

Prime Minster Stephen Harper’s visit to Waterloo Region Thursday included a pledge of up to $265 million for rapid transit projects. The promise to fund one-third of eligible costs up to the specified maximum follows Ontario’s contribution of $300 million.

“We are pleased that the Federal government recognizes the importance of the Region’s rapid transit project, and has made this funding commitment to the initial phase of the project,” said regional Chair Ken Seiling.

With the funding in place, the region now plans to move forward with the planning of the project’s scope, design details, cost and Regional funding options. The region wants to spend $710 million building a light rail transit link between Conestogo Mall in Waterloo and Fairview Park in Kitchener. Another $80 million would provide rapid buses in Cambridge.

The $565 million in senior government money likely derails the LRT plan, however, as the region would still have time to come ups with several hundred million dollars of its own to proceed.

> Wellesley rec. rates up 3% Wellesley Council this week approved a three-per-cent increase on all recreation facility rental fees for the 2010/ 2011 season to cover increased costs associated with the HST. In a report prepared for council, director of recreation Brad Voisin indicated that, “facility rental rates are the key source of income for our recreation department. These rates must be adjusted yearly to reflect inflation, user group demand, and area competition.”

Maryhill man faces charges for uttering threats >>4:00 PM | A child’s red, fivespeed, Northland bicycle was found at a storm drainage pond near Crane Crescent and Kingfisher Drive in Elmira. It is being held at Division 3A for pickup by its rightful owner.

AUGUST 26 >>4:30 PM | A wallet was taken

from a vehicle that had been entered unlawfully sometime overnight on Church Street in Elmira. Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy in relation to the incident and are still looking out for a 15-yearold boy who is believed to be involved as well. Police believe that these two youths are suspects in a number of recent thefts and break-ins to autos in the downtown Elmira area.

woman from Wellesley Township and her nine-month-old daughter were involved in a single-vehicle collision while westbound on Lawson Line in Wellesley Township. The vehicle, a Chevrolet, left the roadway and rolled over in the south ditch, damaging a small wire fence at a farmer’s field. Minor injuries were incurred as a result of the collision and both victims sought medical treatment.

Both were later released from hospital. The cause of the collision is currently under investigation. No charges have

been laid at this time.

When police arrived they found a father and son taking the material and asked them to return it to the site. No charges were laid but the men were given a warning.

Kitchener woman driving a Pontiac was unable to stop in time and collided with a 55-year-old Cambridge man in a Dodge when he slowed to turn right at the intersection of King and Weber streets south of St. Jacobs. There was moderate damage to both vehicles and the female driver suffered minor injuries. The Kitchener resident was charged with ‘careless driving’ and the Cambridge man was charged with ‘fail to surrender license.’

spotted an older, black Dodge Ram being driven erratically between Bloomingdale and Conestogo on Sawmill Road.

The car was estimated to be driving in excess of 150 km/h and was seen swerving back and forth into the shoulder of the road, then into the lane of oncoming traffic. The driver went through a red light, and then later stopped at a green light. The male driver then pulled into the parking lot of an Arthur Street store in Elmira, re-entered his vehicle and continued driving, this time with his headlights off. Police intercepted the 21-year-old Kitchener man as he pulled into the parking lot at the Elmira Tim Hortons, where he proceeded to walk quickly into the store. Police arrested the young driver and

No signal lights for Wellesley intersection

fter an analysis of the intersection of Nafziger Road and Queens Bush Road in Wellesley Township, the Region of Waterloo has decided that a signal light is not warranted at the intersection.

Bob Henderson, the region’s manager of transportation engineering, delivered the report to councillors Tuesday night in response to Mayor Ross Kelterborn’s request

earlier this year for an analysis of the intersection. The region studied traffic volumes at the intersection on May 27, basing the decision on traffic flows that day.

The intersection currently has stop signs only on north and southbound Nafziger Road.

For an intersection to be considered suitable for the installation of an all-way stop, the total traffic of volume entering that intersec-

tion must exceed 500 vehicles per hour. At the intersection of Nafziger and Queens Bush Road, the total traffic volume was only 480 vehicles per hour, said Henderson, making a signal at the intersection unwarranted.

The region also cited in their report that allway stops have been shown effective at limiting collisions at intersections that experience a minimum of 12 collisions over three years. A review of the intersection

of Nafziger Road and Queens Bush Road, however, showed only two angle collisions in the past three years.

Henderson also detailed the danger of installing lights where they are not required.

“We have a very extensive collision database where we can track this information and make reliable conclusions,” Henderson said. “We looked at 47 intersections where we installed signals, we looked at collisions

before and after [the signals were installed], there was a 70-per-cent increase in collisions after the signals were installed.”

He said that the region must balance not only the flow of traffic, but the safety of everyone on the road as well.

“Most pedestrian collisions in our region occur at signalized intersections,” he explained.

“Of all our pedestrian collisions, approximately 58 per cent occur at signalized intersec-

new stretch of sidewalk is planned for the west side of Elmira’s Barnswallow Drive, from approximately Kingfisher Drive to past Pheasant Drive, as part of $64,000 in concrete work approved this week by Woolwich council.

and replacement work is slated for some 16 spots in Elmira, 15 in Winterbourne, three in Conestogo and a pair in St. Jacobs.

Meeting Tuesday night, councillors awarded a tender to Sousa Concrete to carry out the work this year, despite receiving only one official tender (a second, more expensive bid was re-

ceived, but rejected because it failed to include a tender deposit.)

The single tender was a point of concern for Coun. Mark Bauman, who initially suggested the work be deferred, perhaps re-tendered next spring.

Coun. Murray Martin added that the work involved many small repairs scattered across the township – the cost seemed fair given that the company would have to move its equipment many times in the course of the project.

Henderson agreed, saying he had received some complaints as well, but added that the region will continue to monitor the intersection. If there is a rise in the number of collisions, the region will reinvestigate the issue.

“Near-misses happen everywhere,” he said, “they don’t just happen at this intersection.”

The military made her and the other musicians feel very safe – they were given clear instructions on what to do if there was any danger, she said.

And there were some frightening moments: the base came under attack several times during their time there.

“It’s pretty scary.

Sirens go off, you have to put on your full gear, and you have to lie on your stomach on the ground until the siren goes off again to tell you everything is OK.” Sanderson spent her

time performing four shows at several Canadian bases, including Kandahar and Kabul, as well as touring the base, visiting the market and spending time at a school for Afghan boys.

The men and women serving over there really offered an eyeopening experience for her, as well.

“They just want to show you pictures of their kids and their family,” she said.

When Sanderson told friends and family that she was heading to Afghanistan, the mother of three says she got a mixed response.

“Everyone was very supportive and appreciative that I would be willing to do something like that, but then there was also the total opposite, saying ‘what are you doing, you have three kids and a family, why would you risk your

desert, dust and dirt with barely a blade of grass to be seen."

The treatment of women in Afghan society also struck her, considering she has two young daughters at home.

“They [women] aren’t allowed to go to school. We were also told that in most areas women are unable to even seek medical care on their own – they must have the approval of a husband or father.

Needless to say, it was actually emotional seeing my own two girls and being so grateful for the opportunities that lie ahead of them simply because of where we live.”

Sanderson said she can still hear the choppers and the planes when she tries to sleep at night, despite only being there for less than two weeks.

“I didn’t go into this trip as an advocate for the war, and I don’t totally understand it, but I don’t need to. It’s easy to turn a blind eye. I watch the news in the morning, I finish my coffee, and I turn the television off and go on with my day. It was very interesting to go over there, where it doesn’t shut off.”

fter touring the world and performing with superstars like Keith Urban, George Strait, and Brooks and Dunn, Giselle Sanderson admits that her recent tour in Afghanistan was possibly the best experience.

“The level of gratitude is unmatched really,” she said. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt so appreciated for what we do for entertaining anybody as I did over there.”

On Aug. 26, Sanderson, a West Montrose native, returned home to Elmira from a 10-day trip to Afghanistan, having entertained the troops with fellow country music singer Beverly Mahood.

The Canadian Forces contacted Mahood and asked if she wanted to perform for the troops, and Mahood invited Sanderson along too.

The two have performed together for years as part of the country trio Lace and throughout their own solo careers.

“To me, it’s a real opportunity to do something good with your craft. There is a real need for a morale-

six months, so when we get there it’s a tiny piece of regular life to them. They just want to talk about their home life, and once you befriend them they share some pretty personal stories.”

The opportunity to travel to Afghanistan and play for the troops is one that Sanderson would never forego.

She said she would return if the opportunity presented itself again.

That said, it was an amazing feeling for her when the plane landed in Trenton after their 16-hour return flight.

“Just to see how lush and green the landscape looked – something so simple that I take for granted daily.

At this point, the township is almost as much in the dark as the public. Woolwich has provided comments and suggestions about the plant, which would convert organic waste into electricity, but those documents were returned by the MOE. All those wishing to comment will have to wait until the ministry deems Bio-En’s application to be complete.

At that point, the documents will be posted on the Environmental Registry website, and the public will have 60 days to comment, he explained.

In an earlier interview, Bio-En president Chuck Martin said the company has been providing the ministry with additional information and documents.

He believes the process is done, but the MOE has yet to officially state the application is complete.

All the misinformation floating around, even about the process itself, is reason enough

for the MOE to call for another public meeting, said Coun. Sandy Shantz – “there needs to be a little more discussion.”

Both the previous meetings were public information sessions – open houses, rather than formal presentations with a chance for the public to have its say and ask questions.

The latter kind of meeting is what council is calling for now.

Bio-En plans to create electricity by converting organic waste into methane to power a generator. Materials such as livestock manure, food waste, used cooking oils and other fats will be fed into anaerobic digester, creating the fuel for the process. The $12-million facility would generate 2.8 megawatts of renewable electricity – enough to power 2,200 homes – and 3.4 mW of heat.

Under the province’s new Green Energy Act, municipalities are no longer involved in the approval process for alternative energy projects. Rather, the decision will be made at Queen’s Park.

More candidates means more interest in election

T

he race is on in Woolwich. New candidates entering the fray this week ensure there will be an election contested in all three wards, as well as for the mayor’s position.

That’s great news. Still, the more, the merrier. Would-be candidates have until next Friday to join in on the fun. The more people involved, the more ideas get floated out for the public to consider. Greater choice may also encourage a higher turnout – participation rates for municipal elections are notoriously poor.

In that vein, chances are fairly good Woolwich will see more than 27 per cent of eligible voters out at the polls, which was the figure last time out in 2006. Due to a lively debate over what would become the Woolwich Memorial Centre, turnout in Ward 1 was 36 per cent. Given that there are many issues at play just now – gravel pits and a proposed biogas plant, for

instance – it’s reasonable to expect more people to take an interest in the upcoming election.

Throw in concerns about the current economic climate and there’s a definite buzz going around. Nothing like a federal election campaign, of course, but certainly more palpable than at any time in the last decade.

We’d even venture to say there’s a feeling of change in the air.

That may be why more candidates have opted to come forward. And why we could – and should – see more join in.

Typically, incumbents do have an advantage. They’re given points for their experience. They’ve got name recognition. Low voter turnout numbers can indicate a lack of major concerns on the part of the electorate.

There are, however, issues evoking some passion in Woolwich residents just now.

The most visible of those are a biogas-fuelled electrical generation plant in Elmira and a series of gravel pits proposed for sites near Conestogo, West Montrose and Winterbourne. There are simmering issues in Breslau, where residents have long felt a certain disconnect from an Elmira-centered administration. And there are lingering issues over the township’s recent building spree.

All of this should translate into more focus on the Oct. 25 election.

The fact that every seat is being contested means these and other issues will be discussed, in open forums and around the kitchen table.

Residents will have a chance to ask questions and to reflect on what they want to hear – the candidates who best reflect the general mood have the best shot.

of the first things council should consider is increasing the number of councillors. Although any change would have to wait another four years for the next election, the move would serve to boost the amount of discussion and dissent. That can’t help but change the dynamics of council meetings.

Governing in the township tends to be more managerial than political. That has its advantages – look no farther than the petty squabbling of senior governments – but it tends to put bureaucracy ahead of the democratic ethos.

An across-the-board electoral race in Woolwich is a good first step. It’s a different story in Wellesley Township, however, where only the five incumbents have filed papers so far.

There, the call for candidates really needs to be heeded, if only to make the whole thing more interesting.

Muslim backlash to play role in U.S. election T

he great journalist H.L. Mencken once said that nobody ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American public – but I may be about to prove him wrong.

Three or four months ago, I started betting various friends that the Democrats would lose control of both houses of the U.S. Congress in the mid-term elections this November. I was way ahead of the opinion curve, so I got lots of takers. But now, when the general opinion has shifted in that direction, I begin to think I was wrong. And it all has to do with the “Ground Zero mosque.”

If you have been paying attention and are fully sentient, you will know that it is not actually a mosque. If the sponsors can raise the money (which remains to be seen), it would contain a prayer room, but also a restaurant, a 500-seat theatre, basketball courts and a swimming pool that would be open to all. It would not have a minaret, but there would be a memorial to the 3,000 people (including 300 Muslims) who died in the 9/11 attacks.

And it is not, of course, at Ground Zero. It is two blocks up and around the corner, invisible from where the World Trade Center once stood. Not that there’s any reason for it to hide around the corner: there’s nothing wrong with an Islamic cultural centre.

It should also be pointed out that the Pussy Cat Lounge, an upmarket strip club, is closer to the site and not invisible at all.

So should we ask whether those on the right wing of the Republican Party who started this business about a mosque at Ground Zero intended to exploit the latent Islamophobia of the

International Affairs GWYNNE DYER American public? You might as well ask if the Pope is a Catholic. This is a “wedge issue,” deliberately concocted to drive the dimmer elements of the Republican Party into supporting the right wing’s other positions as well.

I hear you protesting that the Republican Party doesn’t have a left wing anymore, so how can it have a right wing? But everything is relative in politics, and the real contest this autumn is not being held in November.

Most Congressional districts have been gerrymandered to the point where they are safe seats for one party or the other, so the real contest is in the primary (which chooses the party’s candidate) in any given district.

Senate seats cannot be gerrymandered in the same way, but there are also bitter primary struggles between “left” and “right” Republicans in many of them. Republican senator John McCain, the former presidential candidate, survived the Arizona primary last week only by shifting sharply right on many issues, including climate change and immigration. Other moderate Republican senators are doing the same, but they may not be so lucky.

The “Ground Zero mosque” campaign was begun by players like Fox News and Mark Williams, organizer of the Tea Party Express, who warned that “The mosque would be for the worship of the terrorists’ monkey

god.” (It’s really hard to tell Muslims and Hindus apart, especially if you’re really stupid.) But the campaign works for the hard right because a large proportion of the U.S. population is anti-Muslim.

Exactly how large nobody knows, but we may safely assume that the 24 per cent of Americans who believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim are not thinking: “Good. When Americans elected a black, Muslim president, we showed how tolerant the country is.” They are thinking: “Oh my God, there’s a black Muslim terrorist in the White House. America is doomed.”

Let us assume, therefore, that the proportion of Americans who fear and hate Muslims (in most cases without ever having met one) is somewhere between that 24 per cent and the 61 per cent, according to a recent Time Magazine poll, who oppose the “Ground Zero mosque.”

How excited should we get about this? Not very. You would probably get a similar figure if you asked people in almost any Muslim country whether they see contemporary Americans as a new generation of “crusaders.”

They aren’t, any more than Muslims are terrorists, but the Muslim Middle East has a rather one-sided view of the Crusades.

After five centuries when the Middle East and North Africa had been mostly Christian, Islam conquered the whole region in the 7th and 8th centuries.

Now's not the time to rock the public sector boat L

et the union bashing begin.

With its hardline stance against the province’s plan to freeze public sector wages, the Canadian Auto Workers union is clearly out of step with public sentiment … and reality.

They’ve certainly learned nothing from the backlash that followed the ill-considered bailout of GM and Chrysler.

Secret negotiations that begin early last month ground to a halt when unions walked out. Apparently they’re not prepared to take ‘no’ for an answer, unlike Ontario taxpayers.

In last spring’s budget and in subsequent talks, Premier Dalton McGuinty argued staffing costs, governments’ largest expense at 55 per cent of program costs, have to be brought under control to tackle deficits.

That’s especially true if the goal is to maintain programs and avoid large tax increases, in which case something’s gotta give. That something is the civil service salaries.

The restraint advocated by both the federal and provincial budgets finds a receptive audience: most of us have no problem seeing government workers as overpaid and underworked.

Fair or not, that’s the perception.

And it’s what politicians are counting on to keep the public onside.

Unions representing some 710,000 government workers are naturally not eager to go down the restraint

Having bought union peace by reversing many of the cuts executed in the Mike Harris Era, McGuinty is finding out just how much goodwill that bought him: none. Public sector wage increases have been outstripping private sector gains – and the ability to pay for government spending – over the years. Now, with a $19-billion deficit and a weak economy, those who prospered while others suffered are showing no inclination to help. It’s for that reason that McGuinty has no choice but to impose the wage freezes, inflicting hard penalties on those who fail to do what’s right.

This is not a tirade against government workers. We want services, so we need people to provide them.

People paid a decent living wage. The trick will be to decide what services we really need – hint, fewer than we’re spending money on right now – and what constitutes “decent.”

Even those who support the bu-

reaucracy unconditionally should take heed of the new economic climate, however. Failure to change the public’s perception about how government is run will undermine the legitimacy of the entire system.

That in turn paves the way for the election of politicians eager to make Harris look like Bob Rae. The numbers speak for themselves.

But they get plenty of help from the likes of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. Between the time the Liberals took power in 2003 and the end of the last fiscal year in March, program spending grew to $104 billion from $64 billion. That 62-per-cent jump clearly outpaced both inflation and the population growth in the province. As the CTF points out, even just keeping pace with those increases – a big jump in spending nonetheless – would have left Ontario without a deficit.

Clearly, that kind of spending growth isn’t sustainable. Mild changes today, including rollbacks of wages now more than 30 per cent higher than comparable private-sector levels, will eliminate the need for painful cuts later.

The same should be true of municipal governments. While the Liberals asked municipalities to follow their lead on wage freezes, they didn’t make that binding. The result? Well, just look at the City of Waterloo’s

decision this week to give firefighters a 4.2-per-cent increase over two years – twice the rate of the forecasted inflation rate. That’s far too high.

And not the zero per cent McGuinty suggested.

The Premier would be well advised to legislate freezes down to the local level. Municipalities should also be made to follow provincial plans to reduce the size of the public service by five per cent over the next two years, largely through attrition, which counters arguments the government shouldn’t be laying off workers while unemployment levels remain high.

I may be taking a somewhat strident tone on this issue, but it’s nothing compared to the vitriol to be found on public forums. Set off by the union position, the blogosphere is ripe with calls for Reaganesque mass firings. We’re growing increasingly dissatisfied with the status quo; without some relief, the explosion could be far more damaging to public sector workers. Worse still would be the damage done to our liberal democratic ideas about how government should be organized and how it should function.

For the sake of government programs – and for their own hides – public sector unions are best advised to mind the gap … before somebody less friendly minds it for them.

Councillor explains tax comments

There’s no excuse for overworking horses

To the Editor,  There have been two letters printed in this paper recently accusing me of being arrogant about how the township maintains tax revenues. I did not say that if property values go down that we would maintain revenues by increasing taxes. I would not say that because that is not how the tax system works.

When Mr. Haywood made the argument that the township would lose millions in tax revenues if property values in West Montrose are allowed to drop, I tried to tell him, and the audience, that property values have no bearing on tax revenues and he immediately jumped to the conclusion that we would simply increase taxes. In fact it was Mr. Haywood who made the statement that “we would simply increase taxes.” I tried to explain how the tax system works but was not allowed time to explain it so everyone went away from the meeting assuming that Mr. Haywood made an accurate statement.

Woolwich, like any other municipality, determines how much revenue is needed from the tax levy in any particular year through the budgeting process. When all projected costs for the year are calculated and all revenues from grants and fees deducted, the balance is raised through taxes. I am disappointed and often fuming by the end of my journeys, having seen almost without exception, that horses being used for transportation are not being given reasonable consideration in this blistering hot weather. They are more often being run as hard as in any weather, with sweat and white salt dripping off of them.

During moderate exercise in hot, humid weather, a horse can reach dangerous temperatures within 17 minutes. Horses feel the heat and its dangerous effects up to 10 times more than we do. Their larger muscle mass creates higher temperatures when worked. Their sweat does not cool them as efficiently as ours does, and most of it is lost by dripping from their bod-

hen driving down township roads and looking out over the fields ripe with new crops and bountiful harvests, it is not often that we think about the systems in place, such as underground drainage, that make those harvests possible. But drainage and piping systems were the hot topics Tuesday in Heidelberg at the grand opening of the Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS) plant, soon to employ around 50 local workers.

ADS is the world’s largest producer of corrugated polyethylene pipe, and it’s Heidelberg facility is the newest of the 48 plants

that produce a full line of single and dual wall corrugated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe.

Food grown close to home is close enough H

ave you seen the new grocery store advertising promotion called Grown Close To Home?

I have, and I like it. It’s clever. In the store, it’s remarkably simple, distinguished by bold signage emphasizing the words Grown and Home, while minimizing Close and To. My mind’s eye tends to turn these words over and read Home Grown, which may be the campaign creator’s intent. If so, it’s effective at making you think whatever you’re buying is homegrown, whatever that means.

I think this is an attempt to capitalize on consumers’ zeal for local food, without actually using the L word.

And that’s good business. Local food has taken on a life of its own. Farmers’ Markets Ontario says 14 new markets opened in the province this year, and while hard numbers aren’t in yet, shopper traffic appears to be up. Nothing says local food like farmers’ markets.

I’ve said before that I support local food. I question some of the claims, including the implication

But there’s definitely a perception that local food is better, and right now, as fresh fruit and vegetables are coming off close-to-home fields and the taste is incredible, it’s tough to refute the suggestion that local is better.

Close to home is close enough for anyone who believes local food is better food. After all, close is a matter of interpretation. I don’t know the dividing line between close, and local; it’s probably in our minds rather than on the harsh lines of a map. If you live in Elmira, local probably means Woolwich and Wellesley townships. So, is Grey-Bruce “close”?

closer than major fruit and vegetable growing regions in the U.S., for example, but if you told someone you lived “close” to Goderich or Bradford or Jordan Station, they’d get the wrong picture.

From a buzz perspective, local is the new organic. And interpretation is something that’s dogged the organic sector for years. The definition of organic was vague and unofficial, meaning consumers were never assured true organic techniques were used to grow whatever was being sold as organic. Eventually, the sector realized this was limiting its potential and got together with Ottawa to create standards. That was a milestone.

The sector took another step forward earlier this week when the federal government announced it was dedicating about $4 million for what it calls efficient and profitable organic food production practice research. The announcement was made at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, which has worked hard to establish itself as Canada’s go-to institution for organic production.

According to Ottawa, research will focus on soil fertility, grain cropping, greenhouse production and food processing. Whatever new knowledge is created could be useful to the conventional sector too.

As well, says Ottawa, researchers will help develop a recognizable, high-quality brand to help establish Canada as a leader in organic production and help farmers expand their businesses. This will certainly help promote standards across the industry.

Research is also beginning at the University of Guelph and elsewhere to deepen the understanding of local food. It would be great to see it treated with the same gravity as the organic sector. Local food has a much larger reach and affects more farmers and consumers. It deserves a more thorough look, and I’m sure farmers who are local, close to home to even far away would agree. Efforts to keep the local food momentum going are vital, not only for their bottom line but for generating interest in agriculture overall.

wila Lebold got out of bed one day this week and vacuumed her home, top to bottom. Then later that afternoon, she played a game of badminton with her son Joseph.

To some, this may seem like the events of an ordinary summer day, but for Lebold, a mother of two who has suffered from multiple sclerosis for the past 20 years, it was an extraordinary feat.

Lebold, who teaches kindergarten at Conestogo Public School, attributes her newfound energy and abilities to a surgical treatment which she received while in India last month. The treatment, which is officially known as “chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency” (CCSVI), is based on the theory that the disease could be the result of narrowed veins in the chest and neck blocking the drainage of blood. “The whole experience was amazing,” Lebold said. “Back in June, my health and my mobility were declining. I wasn’t using a wheelchair but I would hold heavily onto my husband’s arm as we walked. I held heavily onto my sons. After the procedure, my son came to my side and positioned himself so I could hold onto his arm, but I didn’t need his help. I was walking on my own.”

in Waterloo Region, connected with Lou Dietrich, president of Liberation Gateway, which helps arrange overseas visits for people seeking the treatment.

She travelled to India for two weeks in August to be a part of the experimental research.

“Every single one of us had some kind of improvement,” she said. “I am able to walk up and down the stairs, and I can balance better than I could before. One woman had improved speech, another had less back pain.

It’s not a cure, and I can’t guarantee that anyone will be able to leave their wheelchair behind or anything like that, but it sure has seemed to help.”

Zamboni’s treatment has been championed as a medical breakthrough by some patients looking for a way to alleviate

their symptoms, but this week a group of leading Canadian medical experts has advised the federal government against funding clinical trials for the controversial new therapy.

“I don’t expect to see the procedure available in Canada anytime soon,” said Lebold. “I am not going to fight the government on this issue. I feel like that would be barking up the wrong tree. Our government is trying to do everything properly – making sure they dot all their I’s and cross all their T’s. The procedure is still young and research is still being done to see if it really can work. I am excited to be a part of the process.”

Bring the brine for a perfect BBQ Sunday dinner From The Chef's Table Kirstie Herbstreit & Jody o'Malley

N

othing is more Sunday dinner delicious than a whole roasted chicken. A roasted chicken seems to make everyone happy: dark meat for those who prefer the thighs and drumsticks, and white meat for those who like the lean boneless cut. More often than not though, we have dry, overcooked white meat, because the dark meat takes longer to cook on a whole bird. There is, however, a solution.

I am lucky enough to have in-laws who enjoy cooking, company and Sunday dinners with families. My father-in-law and I ‘talk shop’ from the time I arrive to when I leave, and so on this past Sunday I immediately opened the barbeque to find two whole beautiful chickens, roasting away. Of course, I ask: “What did you do to the chicken?” And then I get the ‘solution’.

“I brined them, of course”.

The obvious solution to overcooked dry white meat on whole birds, such as chicken and turkey and with pork is to brine it. Brining is a quick step that involves immersing meat in a salt water solution. The salt actually changes the shape of the meat proteins to allow them to hold more juice than un-brined meat or poultry. An overcooked brined roasted chicken will actually be moister than a perfectly cooked un-brined bird. Not only that, brining is a great way to impart delicious flavour by adding whatever extras you like to a brine.

Here is a basic brine recipe that can be used for pork, turkey or chicken:

Basic Brine

Mix together all of the ingredients (except chickens); Rub chickens well all over with the seasoning mixture; Place chickens in a pan on one side of the BBQ; turn the other side of the BBQ on and maintain a temperature of 375 degrees (i.e. cook indirectly); Roast for about 1 hour and 20 minutes, or until the thigh registers 170°F; Rest for 15 minutes, covered with foil, before carving. While this may conjure up an amusing picture of discomfort, this is not the case at all when working with the type of detoxification program that I outline for a patient.

Certainly there are numerous over-the-counter products that claim their product will completely ‘cleanse your body of all toxins.’ As with all products, the good, the questionable and the bad can sit side by side. Just as with all natural products, you want to make sure that the product has an NHP (Natural Health Product) number which denotes its status of Canadian government approval. This ensures that regulated third-party testing has been carried out on the product and that it is safe for the recommended use.

Do ask the person selling you the product if it has undergone clinical trials relating to the health concerns you have. Do your own research, too.

Contacting the company directly is a good way to provide yourself with specific information that you need to decide if this product it right for you. These simple ways help to ensure that you are taking a product that is safe for its recommended use.

What are the benefits of performing a cleanse?

fter decades of operation and countless matches, the Elmira Curling Club is getting a muchneeded facelift.

Work began last week to replace the cooling pipes and sand used to make the ice at the club, all of which has been in place since the club was first built back in 1965.

“We initially received a Trillium Grant to replace the brine chiller and compressor,” said club president Brian Rainville, “but after we had problems with the pipes, we thought we might as well replace it all.”

The foundation of the curling ice can be either sand or concrete – the latter being more expensive – and a brine mixture is pumped beneath the foundation through a series of pipes to form the 45-metre length of ice.

The total cost of the renovation is about $45,000. It involved the arduous task of removing the old sand – about 45 cubic yards of it – and more than 7,000 metres of pipe, all done with the help of about 20 volunteers.

The club recently replaced the coolant pump and other electrical equipment as well.

trip to the Canada 55+ Games in Brockville, Ont. last week proved to be fruitful for Lynne Martin.

The Winterbourne resident won a bronze medal in the 100- metre freestyle swim, and finished fourth in the 50-metre LYNNE MARTIN freestyle sprint.

“It totally blew me away that I did a bronze,” she admits. “I had no intention of it. I was only going for my personal best. I just focused on ‘you get there and back four times, and see how you make out.’”

Martin, 65, was competing in her sixth Canada 55+ Games, which began back in 1996. The games are a nationwide program designed to promote wellness among Canadians 55 years of age and older. They bring together amateur competitors from every province and territory in activities ranging from swimming and track-and-field to snooker and darts. This year the games featured over 1,500 competitors, including a 97-year-old javelin thrower.

Competitors have to qualify for the Canada 55+ Games by winning at regional or provincial games. Martin qualified with a time of 2:34 in the 100m freestyle in the regional games in Kitchener this year – then promptly shaved 23 seconds off her time to finish at 2:11 at the Canada Games to win bronze.

“I must have had a fire lit under my butt or something,” she said, joking about her improvement.

Martin has spent her entire life in the pool – “since I was old enough to jump in puddles” – and spent several years teaching swimming instructions at the Elmira pool.

She first decided to compete in the games for her 60th birthday, and didn’t know what to expect. “I had no idea what the competition was like. I had no idea what I was up against, and my first time out I won four golds.”

The Wellesley Emeralds ladies’ slo-pitch team won their fourth consecutive league championship last weekend.

After finishing fourth in a league of seven teams, the Emeralds began by defeating Newton 15-5 on Aug 27.

Saturday morning, Wellesley faced off against the first place team, the Millbank Chums, but the Emeralds lost 6-4.

The Emeralds faced Millbank again in the finals, this time having to defeat them twice in order to win. Wellesley won the first game of the final round with a convincing 24-3 romp. It was down to one game, winner takes all.

A tight game saw Wellesley come out on top, 18-14. Beanzie Brenner pitched all six games on Saturday while Dana Macdonald and Katie Reid both had grand slam home runs.

Just call me Robin ... and spread the word I

n case you haven’t heard, about two weeks ago while shooting my bow at a target 20 yards away, I centrepunched the bull’s eye. Then, I drew another arrow and did it again – only this time I put an arrow right down the spine of the first one, splitting it perfectly. Archers call this a Robin Hood. I call it something to talk about for the next 10, maybe 20, years.

Most of us don’t experience these shots too often – they’re just like a hole in one, except that we really did put a hole in one. Because of the rarity of these events, we generally lack the proper etiquette and social skills to introduce this incredible achievement to the world.

For instance, one guy at the archery club had the nerve to actually call a group of us over to his truck.

There he pulled out the arrows he had just Robin-Hooded seven years ago. Between you and me this was a crass attempt that lacked finesse and dignity.

Therefore, as a public service to

Not-So-Great Outdoorsman Steve Galea those who might, through sheer number of arrows shot, find themselves in the enviable position of having achieved a Robin Hood, I will detail how I handled this situation.

10:01 a.m.: Shot a bull’s eye.

Thought to myself, “Darn, no one saw that.”

10:05 a.m.: Still waiting for someone to walk by and ask how my shooting is going. Have decided not to shoot another arrow so as not to ruin it.

10:10 a.m.: Since no one is coming and I have no cell coverage. I shoot another arrow.

10:11 a.m.: I think, “No way” as I look downrange.

10:12 a.m.: “Way,” I counter.

10:13 a.m.: “No way,” I reply.

10:14 to 10:26 a.m.: The debate continues.

10:27 a.m.: I rush inside and gather the family for the momentous news.

In hindsight, making them dress up in their Sunday best was probably a bit much.

10:39 a.m.: I slowly walk them over to the target as I begin to tell “The Greatest Story Ever Told.”

10:40 a.m.: Behold! The Robin Hood!

10:41 a.m.: They nod and walk back towards the house, grumbling with obvious enthusiasm. I sense they now view me as less than a God but more than a man. My wife complains that I will now have to spend $20 on two new arrows.

10:42 a.m.: I drag them back out for the family photos as we pose, individually and as a group, with dad’s Robin Hood.

10:57 a.m.: After finally getting a good photo, I release them from their duties, challenging them to spread the good news.

11:00 a.m.: I call the local news-

“It’s all a completely new system within the last three years,” said head ice-maker Lavern Brubacher, noting the environmental efforts taken to ensure the new ice was as environmentally friendly as possible.

The new construction employed recycled plastics, and a local resident hauled away the old sand for use on his farm.

Rainville and Brubacher also praised the efforts of club members and other volunteers who donated their time to help remove all the old sand by hand and, later, helped put down the new pipes.

“We didn’t have the number of volunteers defined. We’re very pleased with the people who came out. It’s been a lot of fun and brought us closer together,” said

The project has seen some delays, but Brubacher feels the ice should be ready by the end of the month.

While the games have grown in popularity over the past 15 years – there were only about 350 participants at the first event – Martin said many seniors are still reluctant to participate.

“Most people have the idea they can’t do it. I know one fellow that’s been swimming two miles a day at the Elmira pool, and he says ‘oh, I’m not good enough,’ and I say ‘you’ll blow them away.’”

Games chairman David Dargie said the government has not done enough to promote the games.

“The federal government does not have a sport and recreation for life policy, and they really need to do that,” he explained. “The

provinces are all over the map when it comes to funding. It ranges from zero dollars to $500,000.”

The games are not about winning and losing for Dargie; they represent the wonder of sport.

“We’ve got hockey players that are gliding up and down the ice and play so well, and [when] they take off their helmets, you realize they are 55plus. It’s really inspiring.”

For Martin, it’s more about the fun and meeting new people than the final medal count.

“I don’t flaunt it. I’m one of these people who are crazy about the water. People look at me like ‘you swim in the winter time too?’ But that’s just me – it’s fun!”

Calendar a revealing look at old-timers hockey W

hen 36-year-old Jocelyn Clarke was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, the members of her father’s old-timer hockey team, The Waterloo Aging Bulls, felt compelled to help – they wanted to ease the financial burden of her disease.

“Somebody sent us photos called ‘The Real Men,’ I think it was a calendar from Sweden with guys doing various sporting activities like ice fishing, and these guys were all naked,” explains Kevin Catton, one of the original members of the hockey club.

“One guy on the team sent it to his friend and she said ‘you should do this, but on skates’ and that was about the time when Ron’s daughter

was diagnosed. The light bulbs went off, and we thought ‘why not?’”

The calendar project became known as ‘The Real Men of Old-Timer Hockey’ and got underway in April with the help of Zelia Bester and Mark Booth, two local photographers who have donated their time and equipment to shoot the photos.

The calendar features members of the hockey club in strategically posed seminude scenes on the ice, akin to the British calendar girls featuring mature women in risqué poses.

“There’s a lot of humour in it – it’s not just naked hockey players,” said Catton. “If you have any humorous bone in your body, you’ll get a kick out of the scenes in this calendar.”

Half of all the money raised is to be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society, and the other half is to be kept with the team treasurer for the Clarke family to use as they need it to cover living expenses and any medical costs associated with Jocelyn’s cancer treatment.

“It kind of blew me away that they were putting in so much effort, it became a ton of work,” said Ron Clarke, Jocelyn’s father.

“I think if they knew the challenges in front of them, they might not have done it,” he added with a laugh.

Jocelyn has a rare form of cancer known as Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma. It started in her lungs and spread to her lymph nodes and into her spine. She also had two brain tu-

mours, one of which has been successfully removed by doctors, but her prognosis is not good.

“I think this calendar will be a great success. Sadly, I think it will go a long way beyond my daughter because of her condition,” said Clarke. “I think that this project may out-live her, [but] I hope not.”

The 2011 calendars are expected to be ready by next week, and are going to be available on the team’s website, www.waterlooagingbulls.com.

The team is also organizing several events to sell the calendars at as well, including a Kitchener Rangers game in November.

A chance to win big by losing big I

n just six weeks, Elmira’s Linda Robertson underwent a physical transformation.

She committed herself to a fitness plan, stuck with it, and then reaped the benefits when the compliments on her new physique began to pour in from her friends and family and coworkers.

“I had to go out and buy new pants!” she said with a laugh. “My old ones were too big for me, I couldn’t believe it.”

Last May, Robertson, alongside four of her coworkers at Programmed Insurance Brokers, signed up for The Biggest Winner, a six-week fitness and nutrition

program at Pinacle Health and Fitness in Elmira where teams of participants compete against each other to lose the most weight.

Their team, the Skinny Minnies, took home the top prize of $1,500 cash.

Robertson won the prize for the greatest individual accomplishment, losing 13.95 per cent of her total body mass.

Now, members of staff at Pinacle are getting ready to host their second body transformation challenge, and Robertson is encouraging anyone who is eager to get in shape to sign up.

“I wanted to lose the weight, but I didn’t have the motivation to do it by myself,” she explained.

“Being a part of a team is what really made me stick to it, and it was actually a lot of fun.”

The program consists of a nutrition plan, as well as exercise challenges, or ‘boot camps,’ that happen twice per week. The exercise challenges are made up of a number of different workouts that include everything from aerobic exercise to working with the punching bag to pushing a gigantic tire across the Pinacle parking lot.

“The idea of having a defined start date and a set end date is good for keeping people motivated,” said Pinacle owner Barney Kuntze.

To level the playing field and ensure that participants who begin the challenge at a higher weight do not have an unfair advantage over smaller competitors, progress is measured by percentage of body mass lost, rather than pounds. Between Pinacle’s Elmira and Milverton locations, more than 1,220 pounds were lost collectively. Robertson’s team lost 10 per cent of their total body mass to be crowned the winners.

“A lot of people do the challenge for something bigger than themselves,” explained Kuntze. “Some are doing it for their kids or their grandkids. They want to be in good physical shape so they can be there for the important people in their lives.”

And nearly all the participants credited their team for their ultimate success.

The job, she admits, is a lot like herding kittens: trying to contain the chaos.

The end product is all about laughs. While the performance will strike home more fully with those who’ve read or seen Shakespeare – and how many of us escaped high

school without at least a few of the classics? – that kind of familiarity isn’t necessary.

“It stands on its own,” said Deckert, noting that so many excerpts from Shakespeare have made it into common expressions, becoming part of the lexicon.

hakespeare wrote comedies, although perhaps not this outlandish. And he didn’t intend his tragedies to leave people rolling in the aisles.

But the Elmira Theatre Company’s latest production isn’t your usual take on the Bard of Avon – for that, you’ll have to head down the road a bit to Stratford. While drawing on his canon, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) throws in a healthy dollop of Monty Python and Mel Brooks.

The play – also known as The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (abridged) –manages to compress all 37 of the Bard’s comedies and tragedies into a two-hour romp through the Shakespearean universe.

Given the breadth of the work covered, the on-stage time is by necessity an exercise in organized mayhem. Jumping from play to play – each work is announced – the actors have to move at a torrid pace to cram them all in. Rapid costume changes see three men in tights donning a variety of wigs and hats, grabbing props as they’re needed.

“They’re sweating when they’re done. They’re constantly running, and getting changed quickly for the next scene,” said director Deb Deckert of the pace kept by her cast, Doug McDonald, Mike Grant and Gerard Gouthro.

The manic atmosphere and the large amount of improvisation – there is audience participation – makes this production a foray into somewhat unchartered water for ETC. “It’s quite different from anything we’ve done before – it’s more than breaking the fourth wall. The guys are out there in the audience – it takes a lot of improv skills. As a

For those whose school days left them a bit overwhelmed by Shakespeare, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) provides some comic relief. Not a big fan of a certain play? A fresh take and rapid-fire treatment eliminates that issue.

The play starts with a Romeo and Juliet that’s more farce – men in tights in drag – than star-crossed.

Later, Othello is done in rap. The histories – the tales of English kings such as Henry V and Richard III – are covered as a football game, the crown acting as the ball.

Hamlet dominates the second act. The abridged version of the Danish prince’s life deemed so interesting it’s immediately followed by a version at double speed. Then backwards.

Cheeky, yes. But even Shakespeare would likely appreciate the staging, Deckert suggested. Much better than the endless dissecting of his works that goes on in school English classes.

“Shakespeare would be rolling over in his grave if he saw how his [work] is being treated. They’re plays: they’re meant to be performed on stage,” she said.

The Elmira Theatre Company production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) runs Sept. 10-12 and Sept. 16-19. Robert Brubacher – Zone Change 10/2010 The Township has received a Zone Change application from RBA Planning Consultants Ltd. on behalf of Robert Brubacher for the property located at 7021 Sideroad 5 West and described as German Company Tract Part Lot 125, RP58R-9005 Part 4 (see Map 1). The property is designated Rural Land Use in the Township Official Plan and is zoned Agricultural (A). The 22.8 hectare property contains a single family dwelling, beef feed lot and a 330 square metre On-Farm Business for fertilizer blending / packaging with an office building.

The purpose of the application is to amend the Agricultural zoning with a site-specific provision to expand the fertilizer operation and permit the use as a Farm Related Use. The proposed operation will function in a 5,731 square metre (0.6 ha) area of operation on the property. The applicant is proposing the construction of a 1,367 square metre warehouse in addition to the existing 71.4 square metre office, 330 square metre warehouse and associated elevators.

Peacefully went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Chateau Gardens, Elmira in her 99th year. Beloved wife of the late Urias S. Bauman (1986). Loving mother of Mahlon and Edna, Irene and Mervin Snyder, all of Elmira, Abner and Rosalie of Prospect Heights, Illinois, Leona and Mike Bastiaansen of Embro, and Nyle and Kathy of Elmira. Fondly remembered by her 11 grandchildren and 19 great-granchildren.

Predeceased by one son Elmer (1966), her parents Aaron and Lovina (Martin) Hoffman, four brothers and one sister. Katie was a faithful member of Wallenstein Bible Chapel. Relatives and friends will be received at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be conducted at Wallenstein Bible Chapel on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 2 p.m. followed by interment in the Hawkesville Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Conestoga Bible Camp or Chateau Gardens Auxiliary would be appreciated by the family.
