INTRODUCTION Welcome to Oxford! We’re your full time student officers from Brookes Union and we’re really excited to be among the first to welcome you to the University. As recent students ourselves, we have experienced 15 years of Oxford student life between us. We’re in a great position to tell you what life here is like, and we know you won’t be disappointed. Oxford is a city built for students; a city laced with history; a city that will keep throwing surprises at you throughout your time at Brookes. Whatever your tastes, whatever your interests, Oxford will have something for you. With this guide, you’ll be well placed to explore the city. It includes a custom tourist map, highlighting some of the landmarks and unique aspects of Oxford, which, if you’re new to the city, we suggest you check out. It also includes recommendations of where to eat, drink, shop and go out, with many of these reviewed by your fellow Brookes students. Of course, with a city like Oxford, there is always something new happening, so make sure you get out there and find that thing you’ll remember long after your time at Brookes. From here on in, the guide will be introduced by VP Student Experience, Paul McCormack. We all hope to meet you really soon. If there is anything that Brookes Union can do to help you settle in to Oxford, do get in touch with us. We’re here to help.

INFORMATION ON THE DIFFERENT AREAS There are some distinct areas of Oxford. Here we have listed the three main areas where students tend to go out. You’ll quickly find your own favourite haunts and regular shopping areas but while the city is new to you, why not let us show you around.

The City centre features the Covered Market, which can be accessed at the intersection of Cornmarket and the High Street. The Covered Market has been in existence for over 200 years and offers a sensory tapestry of smells, colours, sounds and experiences, not to be matched anywhere else in the city.

At the heart of the city centre is Carfax Tower. It stands at the intersection of Queen Street, which leads on to the High Street, and Cornmarket Street, which becomes St Aldates. This is the busiest part of town and the majority of shops are along these four roads. Both the Carfax Tower and the University Church of St Mary are located in the centre of town, and feature towers that can be scaled for a unique view out over the city skyline.

Many of Oxford University’s 38 colleges are scattered across the city centre. Broad Street is home to one of the oldest, Balliol, and has the Sheldonian Theatre, designed by Sir Christopher Wren. You can find some of the most famous sights of Oxford on or around Broad Street, with the Bodleian Library behind the theatre and the Bridge of Sighs on New College Lane.

Definitely check out the Oxford colleges. It’s only around £1 for students and that includes a guide/leaflet.

SITES TO SEE & THINGS TO DO Introduction from Paul: Oxford is famous worldwide for its history. It’s got a great mix of things to do, whether it’s visiting a 17th century building, enjoying a punt down the river, or going ice-skating. If you’re new to Oxford, you might feel a bit like a tourist. If you’re keen to get out and about and see the sights, take a look at our illustrated map of some of the key tourist attractions. There’s also loads to do within the Union, with more than 60 clubs and societies to choose from, so don’t miss our Freshers’ Fair on the 17th & 18th September, where you can find out more about what we have to offer.

Tourist Attractions 1 Christ Church www.chch.ox.ac.uk Famous as the setting for many scenes from the Harry Potter films, it is the most visited of the Oxford Colleges. Its grounds run along the river and it has a meadow with deer; a great location for a picnic. The college itself features a Picture Gallery, with an outstanding collection of Old Master paintings and drawings.

For Harry Potter fans, Christ Church College. – Zoe-Maria Osborn, Student

2 The Botanic Garden www.botanic-garden.ox.ac. uk The Botanic Garden has the most diverse collection of plants in the world. Entry is free for Brookes students. 3 Bodleian Library Approximately 11 million volumes are held in the

library’s incredible structure. It’s open all week and for information on taking a tour visit www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/ whats-on/take-a-tour-of-thebodleian During Oxford University’s holidays, Brookes students can also apply for a library card to use its resources. 4 Ashmolean www.ashmolean.org The art and archaeology museum charts the creations of humankind from the Neolithic era to the present day, and holds the world’s largest collection of Raphael drawings. It has a café and rooftop restaurant with terrace.

It is adjoined to the Pitt Rivers Museum, which displays archaeological and anthropological collections from around the world, including African masks and Inuit costumes from North America. Admission is free and it’s open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 4.30pm, and Monday from 12pm to 4.30pm. 8 Punting www.oxfordpunting.co.uk

In the summer, Oxford’s rivers become packed with punters. You can also hire out small rowing boats and kayaks. For information on how to punt and where you can hire punts, visit www.dailyinfo.co.uk/guide/ punting.html 9 Port Meadow More than 400 acres of common land is right by the city centre. You can walk along the river to The Perch and The Trout, both wonderful riverside pubs, which have great pub gardens.

Wren, the theatre is a great concert hall, but is also worth visiting simply for its stunning architectural design. Modern Art Oxford www.modernartoxford.org. uk The visual art gallery is internationally recognised for the quality of its exhibitions. It has a shop and café. Admission is free and it’s open Tuesday to Wednesday 10am to 5pm, Thursday to Saturday 10am to 7pm, and Sunday 12pm to 5pm. It’s located in the centre of town on Pembroke Street.

WHERE TO GO SHOPPING Introduction from Paul: The city is packed full of shops. Many offer a student discount, so make sure you’ve purchased and picked up your NUS Extra card. Of course, everyone has their own favourite shops and we could produce a whole guide dedicated to shopping. There’s no way we can list everything for everyone here. Instead, we’re giving an idea of which areas of the city are good for which type of shops. Students have also given us their top money-saving tips, so see below to make sure you don’t race through your student loan.

City Centre Shopping

shopping experiences and opportunities to take a breather.

The City Centre has all of the high street shops that you could wish for. It also boasts two shopping centres; The Westgate Centre (westgateoxford.co.uk) and The Clarendon Centre (www.clarendoncentre. co.uk). There are some major bookshops in the centre, including Blackwell’s and Waterstone’s. Dotted in between the shops are all of the expected fast-food outlets, as well as plenty of cafés and pubs, so it’s easy to find refreshment and a break from the bustle.

East Oxford Shopping

Set a short walk away from the core of shopping activity are areas such as Gloucester Green and The Castle Quarter, which offer their own unique

The Cowley Road has a very unique character and a diverse culture and the shops are reflective of this. From wholefood shops, Eastern and Continental food shops, and a People’s Supermarket, to jewellers, bike shops and boutiques. The Truck Store is Oxford’s independent music hub, which often features impromptu, intimate acoustic sessions by artists playing at the nearby O2 Academy Oxford. Beyond the Cowley Road, in Cowley Centre, is a third shopping centre, Templars Square (www.

templarssquare.com), which hosts many of the shops you would expect in a shopping centre, such as Boots and Carphone Warehouse, alongside an independent greengrocer and Wilkinson. There is also a retail centre, The John Allen Centre, across the road, which is home to TK Maxx, Halfords, JD Sports, and more. Headington is a fairly functional shopping area, featuring mostly supermarkets and cafes. It has more than its fair share of charity shops and an increasing number of boutiques. Headington Hardwares and A-Z Household Goods are both located in the centre of Headington and between them, you can buy pretty much anything you might need for your house.

SHOPPING Tips from students Use Quidco for cashback deals, vouchercodes. co.uk for offers in store or online and inoxford. com for 50% off vouchers for many restaurants. Get coffee cards, boots/ superdrug cards and always ask if the shop offers a student discount. – Ditte Poulsen

Plan your meals and make shopping lists before you go- sounds boring but saves money. – Emily Melville

Wednesday market in Gloucester Green for cheap fruit and veg. – Emma Paterson

Your freezer space is your friend. If you’re a meat eater, all of the shops tend to have buy two for £X on larger packages of chicken and mince. Get some freezer bags and split the packages up into meal-size portions. (Also, if you like chicken and don’t mind dealing with bones, thighs tend to be cheaper and sold in larger packages.) Frozen vegetables are tasty, and are generally only a pound or two for a large bag that will last you for a while.

– Jayson Quayle

– Ariana Morrow

Don’t presume that just because it’s good quality it has to be expensive! Throw dinner parties with friends and split the bill per person. Get some nice meat and make it the star attraction but bulk it out with top quality veg, like the Italians do. It’s a brilliant way to socialise cheaply as well! – Josh Wood

26

Try the Peoples Supermarket in Cowley for cheap food, especially the odd shaped fruit and veg that you can have a giggle about. The Squirrels are in the Gipsy Lane campus foyer on Friday lunchtimes. You can buy some stuff (herbs/spices etc) there for cheap.

Go to the supermarkets a couple of hours before they close as they always reduce a lot of stuff & you can get some really good deals. – Elizabeth Alice Clarkson

Make the most of the freshers student lock ins! 20% off Topshop, River Island etc!!! – Maddie Roberts

We have a history so long that even the highlights are extensive... Edward IV was king when the first book was published in Oxford in 1478. It then took over a hundred years to appoint an official printer to the university: Joseph Barnes got the job in 1585, three years before the Spanish Armada threatened the realm under Elizabeth I. Under Charles I, in 1633, the Delegates of the Press, who still supervise our publishing today, were established, and the University chancellor William Laud, later to cause so much bother during the Civil Wars, obtained a great charter in 1636 which gave the university the right to ‘print all manner of books’. In 1669, a few years after Charles II’s restoration, John Fell, Dean of Christ Church, set up the first university-owned print shop in the Sheldonian Theatre. 1830 was the year that George IV died and William IV became king, and the year OUP moved to its current headquarters on Walton Street. The Bookshop on the High Street in Oxford opened in 1872 , in property previously leased to Joseph Barnes, just two years after Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India, and Charles Dickens, whose novels in the Oxford World’s Classics series continue to delight readers to this day, had died. Twelve years later, in 1884, the first part of what we now call the Oxford English Dictionary was published, and another twelve years after that we opened our first office outside the UK, in New York. Before the outbreak of the Great War in 1914 OUP had expanded globally with offices in Toronto, Melbourne, Cape Town, and throughout India. During this war, we acquired the Dictionary of National Biography, and our Music Department was founded in 1923. The Berlin Wall came down in 1989, and, equally momentously for the Press, we ceased to print books at our Printing House in Oxford (this now houses the Group IT department of the global organization). In the same year, the twenty-volume second edition of the OED was published. The Bookshop expanded to take in 117 High Street in 1996, just before the turn of the millennium saw the launch of OED online. In 2004, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography was issued in 60 volumes, simultaneously becoming available online to hundreds of thousands of subscribers, students, and public library members worldwide. As your life in Oxford begins in 2013, global publishing is changing, but it’s changed a lot already in the 535 years we’ve been around, so we can’t wait to see where the future takes us...

Visit us at The Bookshop on the High Street to see our full range of publishing. Discounts are available with your Brookes Student ID. To discover even more about the history of OUP, arrange a Museum Tour for you and your friends. Available from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Please book in advance by calling 01865 556767 or emailing martin.maw@oup.com. The Museum is located at our headquarters at Great Clarendon Street (in Jericho), Oxford OX2 6DP. Ask for directions when you book your spot. Jericho is a vibrant area of town you will be sure to love.

GETTING AROUND Introduction from Paul: Oxford is a really well connected city. You can get around easily on foot or bike and there’s a Brookes bus that connects all of the campuses. Oxford County Council has recently launched a bike sharing scheme and the University is now selling refurbished bikes. If you fancy a day out, the Oxford Tube and X90 buses to London leave regularly from Headington stops.

Buses: If you are living in halls, you will be entitled to a free Brookes Key, which is the Brookes Bus pass. Your pass will give you unlimited travel on the Brookes buses, which travel between the main Brookes campuses, as well as in to the centre of the city. There are other excellent bus links around the city, into London, and to local towns and cities. Gloucester Green Bus Station The main bus station in Oxford, situated in the heart of the city centre. Buses leave from here to London and the airports, as well as more local destinations, such as Blenheim Palace (S3) and Bicester Village (S5, X5). Coaches to London The Oxford Tube and X90 are both regular coach

28

services between Oxford and London. Their routes start and finish at Gloucester Green Bus Station but both also stop in town and in Headington, including the stops outside the main Gipsy Lane Campus.

Bike hire scheme The recently launched, County Council led ‘Oxonbike’ project aims to reduce the number of short car journeys made around Oxford. Users can pick up the bikes for short-term hire in Headington – including travel between university sites. Bikes will be located at: • Thornhill Park and Ride • Oxford Brookes’ Gipsy Lane site (work on this site is in progress and will be completed shortly) • The John Radcliffe Hospital

• London Road • University of Oxford Old Road campus • Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre • Churchill Hospital. www.grandscheme.co.uk/ oxford

Brookes Bike Doctor scheme Bike Doctor sessions are free for both students and staff, and take place at each campus during semester time. If the Bike Doctor finds something that needs fixing on your bike, you will only be charged for parts. Additionally there is a weekly session at the Centre for Sport, Gipsy Lane, for bikes in desperate need of a “health check”. www.brookes.ac.uk/cyclists

WELFARE Introduction: Oxford is generally a safe place to live but, as with anywhere, you need to make sure you keep yourself safe and know what services are available if you need them. When you go out make sure you know how you’re getting home, whether it be having the number for a licensed taxi firm, or knowing which bus you need to get. If you ever get stuck or lost, then you can call our Safety Bus number (0771 444 5050). It’s out 9pm to

4am every day except Sundays (as long as volunteers are available). The Union is also the place to contact if you’re having financial trouble, such as not getting your student loan on time, or you’re worried about something with your course. Once you are moving into private rented accommodation, Union Advice can help you to understand and check contracts, and much more. If you’re unsure who’s best to contact for any welfare issues, you can always give the Advice Centre a ring and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Money matters

Student Union Advice is here to provide advice and assistance on a whole range of issues. You can talk to us about:

University matters

32

We can give you advice on applying for mitigating circumstances if you are having personal or health problems that are affecting your study, if you want to appeal against a decision the University has made, raise a complaint about the University or you are facing disciplinary action.

We offer advice on student finance, help with problems concerning student loans or grants, give you advice about debts that you are struggling to pay, budgeting worries you may have and advise on banking services and income tax issues.

Housing matters Renting a house? We can give you advice on what you need to know before you rent and check your tenancy contract with you before you sign it to help you avoid signing up to something that could be unfair or costly. We

can advise on problems with landlords, neighbours or fellow tenants, on disrepair and on recovering your deposit.

General matters We can help to check whether you could be entitled to any welfare benefits, give you advice on employment problems, consumer issues and lots more. If you are not sure whether we are the right place to come to just get in touch and if we can’t help we will probably know who can. You can get advice by calling in to see us in the Helena Kennedy Building, phoning us on 01865 484470 or email us at su.advice@brookes. ac.uk.

Do I need insurance in my first year? It’s really easy to forget about insurance when moving to university. Especially if like most students, you’re more focused on other things, such as piling things into the back of the car and juggling about 300 course books and folders. By the end of the term most students have realised the absolute necessity of insurance, learning harsh lessons from friends and acquaintances who have suffered because they forgot to take out a policy. Insurance is a way of adequately preparing for whatever university throws at you, whilst realising that sometimes, things do go wrong.

arranged by your accommodation provider. The student room insurance provided for you focuses on covering some of the items in your room for theft, fire and flood risk. Laptops, tablets and phones are not covered outside of your room so you may wish to consider taking out additional cover to protect these essentials. RELIGION Oxford Brookes Chaplaincy: Space to Be Life at university can be overwhelming. The Chaplaincy is a safe space in the midst of chaos where you can take time out to sit with your thoughts, with a friend, or with a cuppa and just be. Whether you’re struggling, celebrating, or just want to pass the time of day, the chaplains are available to listen and to talk. We can offer help and advice, or talk about what faith means to you. As a team we aim to provide spiritual encouragement and pastoral care, and a wide range of opportunities. We regularly meet for worship, prayer and meditation, discussion, films, a craft community, and much more. You can find us in the Chaplaincy Room in the Helena Kennedy Student Centre. Visit the Chaplaincy website at www.brookes.ac.uk/ student/services/chaplaincy/ for more information about who we are, what we do, and what’s on this semester.

Welcome events Your Spiritual Life at University Workshop for new students, on Monday 16th September at 1pm in BG01, Buckley Building. Welcome Lunch Open to all, on Monday 16th September from 2–4pm in the Chaplaincy, Helena Kennedy Student Centre, Headington Hill. Freshers’ Fair The Chaplaincy will have a stall at the Fair, and the chaplaincy room will be open for tea, coffee and time out.

Worship An ecumenical communion service is celebrated on Tuesdays, Catholic Mass is celebreated on Thursdays, both at 12:15pm and followed by lunch.

Where can I pray? There are facilities across all campuses for Muslim students. In Headington the Quiet Room in the Chaplaincy is available to you, or there are prayer and washing facilities on the

ground floor of the Sinclair building, behind Galaxy Café. At Harcourt Hill there is a prayer room with washing facilities at the entrance to the chapel building. At Wheatley the prayer room is S101, next to the tennis courts. Anyone is welcome to use the Quiet Room in the Chaplaincy for prayer, meditation or time out. The Chapel at Harcourt Hill is also open to all.

How do I find a worshipping community in Oxford? The chaplains can help you to find a faith community that you can call home. Oxford has a wide range of traditions represented across all faiths and you are certain to find somewhere that is right for you. Whoever you are, whatever you believe, the Chaplaincy is your space. We invite you to come along and make yourself at home. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits are available for you. Come and be a part of the community.
