INTRODUCTION Welcome to Oxford! We’re the full time officers from your students’ union and we’re really excited to be among the first to welcome you to the University. Together, with thousands of students, we’ve created this guide to help you make the most of your time in Oxford. Oxford is a city built for students; a city laced with history; a city that will keep throwing surprises at you throughout your time at Brookes. Whatever your tastes, whatever your interests, Oxford will have something for you. With this guide, you’ll be placed to explore the city. It includes a custom tourist map, highlighting some of the landmarks and unique aspects of Oxford, which, if you’re new to the city, we suggest you check out. It also includes recommendations of where to eat, drink, shop and go out, with many of these reviewed by your fellow Brookes students. Of course, with a city like Oxford, there is always something new happening, so make sure you get out there and find that thing you’ll remember long after your time at Brookes.

Andy Pedersen President

Rachel Rimmer Vice President (Academic Experience)

From here on in, the guide will be introduced by VP Student Experience, Will Crisp. We all hope to meet you really soon. If there is anything that Brookes Union can do to help you settle in to Oxford, do get in touch with us. We’re here to help.

INFORMATION ON THE DIFFERENT AREAS There are some distinct areas of Oxford. Throughout this guide we have listed the three main areas where students tend to go out. You’ll quickly find your own favourite haunts and regular shopping areas but while the city is new to you, why not let us show you around.

Centre of town

At the heart of the city centre is Carfax Tower. It stands at the intersection of Queen Street, which leads on to the High Street, and Cornmarket Street, which becomes St Aldates. This is the busiest part of town and the majority of shops are along these four roads. Both the Carfax Tower and the University Church of St Mary are located in the centre of town, and feature towers that can be scaled for a unique view out over the city skyline. The city centre features the Covered Market, which has been in existence for over 200 years and offers a sensory tapestry of smells, colours, sounds and experiences, not to be matched anywhere else in the city. Many of Oxford University’s 38 colleges are also scattered across the city centre. Broad Street is home to one of the oldest, Balliol, and has the Sheldonian Theatre, designed by Sir Christopher Wren. You can find some of the most famous sights of Oxford on or around Broad Street, with the Bodleian Library behind the theatre and the Bridge of Sighs on New College Lane.

6

brookesunion.org.uk | fb.com/BrookesUnion | @BrookesUnion

East Oxford

Starting at St Clements, and encompassing the Cowley and Iffley Road, East Oxford is packed with places to go out. The most diverse part of the city, it has an abundance of cafés and restaurants serving food from around the world. If you’re looking for live music it’s a good place to explore, with a wide variety of pubs and bars. The area is at the cheaper end of the city and is popular with students who choose to rent. It’s also home to Headington, where the Gipsy Lane campus is. There are several small supermarkets, including The Co-operative and Sainsbury’s, along the London Road, as well as plenty of places to eat and drink.

Jericho

Slightly away from the city centre lies Jericho. A hub of cafés, restaurants, bars and pubs line Little Clarendon and Walton Street, and are tucked away in the back streets. There are lots of independent shops, from a beatnik bookstore (the Albion) to a retro clothes store (Uncle Sam’s). Behind Walton Street is Port Meadow, a good place to go if you want to escape the bustle of the city.

Definitely check out the Oxford colleges. It’s only around £1 for students and that includes a guide/leaflet. – Lily Jane

clubbing guide for freshers The man, the myth, the legend. Clubber Steve brings you his guide on clubbing in Oxford: Hello there, my name is Steven Mayes AKA Clubber Steve. I have just graduated from Oxford Brookes, having studied History there for the past three years. In my time at university, it was safe to say that I went out a lot! As a result, I gained a lot of knowledge of the club scene in Oxford. You might say I’m very experienced in that field. This is my definitive guide to the clubs of Oxford.

Lava Lava is the biggest club in Oxford by a long way with three main rooms all playing different music. The main room upstairs plays traditional club and chart club tunes, the cheese room downstairs (as you’d expect) plays 90’s cheese throughout the night and the room at the back of the club plays R’n’B all night. Therefore, there is music suited for everyone. Monday is Brookes’ night but you can also go on Fridays and Saturdays if you choose to do so.

wahoo Wahoo, as the name suggests, is a very fun place to go with two floors both playing traditional clubbing tunes all night. The staff at Wahoo are some of the best around and Wahoo is the home of Brookes’ most famous student night, Fuzzy Ducks. This night happens on a Wednesday and is where the sports teams go, so if you see yourself as a person who will join a sports team, then no doubt you will end up in Wahoo.

Fairly expensive drinks, but a good atmosphere

JUNCTION Junction is a medium-sized club with one main floor, a couple of bars and a recently renovated VIP area with LED lighting. Junction’s main night is Kandy@Junction on Fridays. As this is junction’s main night, other nights are very busy. I would recommend going on a Friday for the best experience.

WHERE TO GO SHOPPING Introduction from WILl: The city is packed full of shops. Many offer student discount, so make sure you’ve purchased and picked up your NUS Extra card. Of course, everyone has their own favourite shops and we could produce a whole guide dedicated to shopping. There’s no way we can list everything for everyone here. Instead, we’re giving an idea of which areas of the city are good for which type of shops. Students have also given us their top money-saving tips, so see below to make sure you don’t race through your student loan.

City Centre Shopping The City Centre has all of the high street shops that you could wish for. It also boasts two shopping centres; the Westgate Centre (westgateoxford.co.uk) and the Clarendon Centre (www.clarendoncentre. co.uk). There are some major bookshops in the centre, including Blackwell’s and Waterstone’s. Dotted in between the shops are all of the expected fast-food outlets, as well as plenty of cafés and pubs, so it’s easy to find refreshment and a break from the bustle. Set a short walk away from the core of shopping activity are areas such as Gloucester Green and The Castle Quarter, which

32

offer their own unique shopping experiences and opportunities to take a breather.

East Oxford Shopping Cowley Road has a very unique character and a diverse culture and the shops are reflective of this. From wholefood shops, Eastern and Continental food shops, to jewellers, bike shops and boutiques. The Truck Store is Oxford’s independent music hub, which often features impromptu, intimate acoustic sessions by artists playing at the nearby O2 Academy Oxford. Beyond the Cowley Road, in Cowley Centre, is a third shopping centre, Templars Square (www. templarssquare.com),

which hosts many of the shops you would expect in a shopping centre, such as Boots and Carphone Warehouse, alongside an independent greengrocer and Wilkinson. There is also a retail centre, the Templars Shopping Park (www. templarsshoppingpark.com), across the road, which is home to TK Maxx, Halfords, JD Sports, and more. Headington is a fairly functional shopping area, featuring mostly supermarkets and cafés. It has more than its fair share of charity shops and an increasing number of boutiques. Headington Hardwares and A-Z Household Goods are both located in the centre of Headington and, between them, you can buy pretty much anything you might need for your house.

SHOPPING Tips from students Use Quidco for cashback deals, vouchercodes. co.uk for offers in store or online and inOxford. com for 50% off vouchers for many restaurants. Get coffee cards, boots/ superdrug cards and always ask if the shop offers a student discount. – Ditte Poulsen

Plan your meals and make shopping lists before you go – sounds boring but saves money. – Emily Melville

Wednesday market in Gloucester Green for cheap fruit and veg. – Emma Paterson

Your freezer space is your friend. If you’re a meat eater, all of the shops tend to have buy two for £X on larger packages of chicken and mince. Get some freezer bags and split the packages up into meal-size portions. (Also, if you like chicken and don’t mind dealing with bones, thighs tend to be cheaper and sold in larger packages.) Frozen vegetables are tasty, and are generally only a pound or two for a large bag that will last you for a while. – Ariana Morrow

Make the most of the freshers student lock ins! 20% off Topshop, River Island etc!!! – Maddie Roberts

Go to the supermarkets a couple of hours before they close as they always reduce a lot of stuff & you can get some really good deals. – Elizabeth Alice Clarkson

Don’t presume that just because it’s good quality it has to be expensive! Throw dinner parties with friends and split the bill per person. Get some nice meat and make it the star attraction but bulk it out with top quality veg, like the Italians do. It’s a brilliant way to socialise cheaply as well! – Josh Wood

Not only will the popular service that runs through Thame and Wheatley benefit from an improved Saturday timetable but two more brand-new buses recently went into use on the route. The new timetable means that buses will be running every 20 minutes throughout the week from Monday to Saturday and with an hourly service on Sundays. The Saturday service currently runs on a half-hourly frequency.

42

As well as their distinctive two-tone blue colour scheme, the buses are fitted out to a high standard inside, with comfortable E-leather seating, free Wi-Fi and electrical power sockets, together with audio-visual displays to announce the bus stops along the route or to display messages.

“Not only do we offer a frequent service between Aylesbury and Oxford through the week but there are also journeys in the early hours of the morning back from Oxford to Aylesbury on Saturday and Sunday mornings for those who have enjoyed a night out in Oxford.”

Arriva’s Regional Publicity Manager, Richard Lewis, said “We are delighted to offer an improved service to our customers on Saturdays and to have made a further big investment in new buses for the route.

Full details of the Sapphire 280 service can be found online at arrivasapphire. co.uk or by calling 0344 800 4411.

STAYING SAFe Introduction: Thames Valley Police work alongside Oxford Brookes University and Students’ Union to provide protection and crime prevention advice to students. Please read the enclosed information providing contact details and helpful advice to keep yourself and your belongings safe.

Bicycle safety Please read the following crime prevention / reduction actions and advice as it will assist police and partners to reduce the risk of crime and prevent members of the public from becoming victims: • Get a good bike lock; look for the Sold Secure logo on approved locks. • Always lock your bike at home even when it is in your garage. • When out and about, lock your bike up in a secure location at a bike rack or lamp post. • Always lock your bike even if you’re only leaving it for a couple of minutes. • Make the locked bike difficult to manoeuvre; keep any gaps between the lock and bike frame small. • If you have quick release wheels, lock them up too. • Remove lights from the bike and take them with you.

• Identify and register your bike with schemes such as Immobilise or Bike Register.

WELFARE Introduction: Oxford is generally a safe place to live but, as with anywhere, you need to make sure you keep yourself safe and know what services are available if you need them. When you go out make sure you know how you’re getting home, whether that means having the number for a licensed taxi firm, or knowing which bus you need to get. If you ever get stuck or lost, then you can call our Safety Bus number (0771 444 5050). It’s out 9pm to 4am every day except Sundays (as long as volunteers are available).

The Union is also the place to contact if you’re having financial trouble, such as not getting your student loan on time, or you’re worried about something with your course. Once you are moving into private rented accommodation, the Union Advice Centre can also help you to understand and check contracts, and much more. If you’re unsure who’s best to contact for any welfare issues, you can always give the Advice Centre a ring and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Money matters

Student Union Advice is here to provide advice and assistance on a whole range of issues. You can talk to us about:

University matters

44

We can give you advice on applying for mitigating circumstances if you are having personal or health problems that are affecting your study, if you want to appeal against a decision the University has made, raise a complaint about the University or you are facing disciplinary action.

We offer advice on student finance, help with problems concerning student loans or grants, give you advice about debts that you are struggling to pay, budgeting worries you may have and advise on banking services and income tax issues.

Housing matters Renting a house? We can give you advice on what you need to know before you rent and check your tenancy contract with you before you sign it to help you avoid signing up to something that could be unfair or costly. We can advise on problems

with landlords, neighbours or fellow tenants, on disrepair and on recovering your deposit.

General matters We can help to check whether you could be entitled to any welfare benefits, give you advice on employment problems, consumer issues and lots more. If you are not sure whether we are the right place to come to just get in touch and if we can’t help we will probably know who can. You can get advice by calling in to see us in the John Henry Brookes, phoning us on 01865 484470 or email us at su.advice@brookes.ac.uk.

not JUST FOR FIRST YEARS!

If you would like to stay in a Hall of Residence as 2nd or 3rd year student, the Accommodation Bureau can help you. You can book a room from February onwards (though rooms go quickly so don’t leave it too late to book), details of available halls, prices and contract lengths will be on our website www.brookes.ac.uk/ halls4all.

48

Living in halls is ideal after your first year. You get to benefit from all of the convenience of being in a hall, you have the option to live with your friends, you will be separate from first year students, you can take part in hall social events, meet new friends and you still get your BROOKESbus pass. You also don’t need any guarantors, and there’s no arguments about paying bills. There’s no need to sign up to a costly private rental contract, and you don’t need to be pressured into deciding where you want to live, and who you want to live with until after the Christmas

break, once you’ve had time to settle in to university life. Pop into the Accommodation Bureau, or look on our website in February to see where you can live next year. We also have shared housing available for groups and individuals if that is what you prefer (www.brookes. ac.uk/students/ accommodation/ shared-housingvacancies/).

Do I need insurance in my first year? Good news; you may already have basic cover in place in your halls of residence arranged by your accommodation provider. This student room insurance focuses on covering some of the items in your room for theft, fire and flood risk. Laptops, tablets, phones and any other gadgets are not covered outside of your room under this cover. Most students have an average of three gadgets and with a total value of nearly ÂŁ3,000, you may wish to consider taking out additional cover, to protect these valuable companions as they travel with you throughout your first year.

tablet or laptop is an essential tool for coursework. What would you do without them? You can insure just one gadget or more with our new policy, which evolves with you throughout university to make sure your changing needs are met during term time, when you go back home to visit friends and family, holidays abroad and even when you graduate. To find out more, visit: www.endsleigh.co.uk/gadget

We all rely on gadgets so much that losing or damaging them can be stressful. Your phone is a vital link with friends and family and your brookesunion.org.uk | fb.com/BrookesUnion | @BrookesUnion

religion & belief Oxford Brookes Chaplaincy: Space to Be

Welcome events

Life at university can be overwhelming. The Chaplaincy is a safe space in the midst of chaos where you can take time out to sit with your thoughts, with a friend, or with a cuppa and just be. Whether you’re struggling, celebrating, or just want to pass the time of day, the chaplains are available to listen and to talk. We can offer help and advice, or talk about what faith means to you. As a team we aim to provide spiritual encouragement and pastoral care, and a wide range of opportunities. We regularly meet for worship, prayer and meditation, discussion, films, a craft community, and much more. You can find us in the Chaplaincy Room in the Helena Kennedy Student Centre, Headington Hill. Visit the Chaplaincy website at www.brookes.ac.uk/ student/services/chaplaincy/ for more information about who we are, what we do, and what’s on this semester.

Your Spiritual Life at University Workshop for new students, on Monday 15th September at 11am in the Careers Training Room, JHBB, Gipsy Lane. Welcome Lunch Open to all, on Monday 15th September from 2–4pm in the Chaplaincy, Helena Kennedy Student Centre, Headington Hill. Freshers’ Fair The Chaplaincy will have a stall at the Fair, and the chaplaincy room will be open for tea, coffee and time out.

Worship An ecumenical communion service is celebrated on Tuesdays, Catholic Mass is celebrated on Thursdays, both at 12:15pm and followed by lunch.

Where can I pray? There are facilities across all campuses for Muslim students. In Headington the Quiet Room in the Chaplaincy is available to you, or there are prayer and washing facilities on the

ground floor of the Sinclair building, behind Galaxy Café. At Harcourt Hill there is a prayer room with washing facilities at the entrance to the chapel building. At Wheatley the prayer room is S101, next to the tennis courts. Anyone is welcome to use the Quiet Room in the Chaplaincy for prayer, meditation or time out. The Chapel at Harcourt Hill is also open to all.

How do I find a worshipping community in Oxford? The chaplains can help you to find a faith community that you can call home. Oxford has a wide range of traditions represented across all faiths and you are certain to find somewhere that is right for you. Whoever you are, whatever you believe, the Chaplaincy is your space. We invite you to come along and make yourself at home. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits are available for you. Come and be a part of the community.
