INTRODUCTION Welcome to Oxford! We’re the full time officers from your students’ union and we’re really excited to be among the first to welcome you to the university. Together, with hundreds of students, we’ve created this guide to help you make the most of your time in Oxford.

find out more about YOUR students’ union... We’re a charity that works to represent the views of over 17,000 students. All Brookes students are automatically members, and it doesn’t cost you a penny! Being a member brings a whole host of benefits, such as the opportunity to join one of our fantastic societies. Andy Pedersen President

Oxford is a city built for students; a city laced with history; a city that will keep throwing surprises at you throughout your time at Brookes. Whatever your tastes, whatever your interests, Oxford will have something for you. With this guide, you’ll be placed to explore the city. It includes a custom tourist map, highlighting some of the landmarks and unique aspects of Oxford, which, if you’re new to the city, we suggest you check out. It also includes recommendations of where to eat, drink, shop and go out, with many of these reviewed by your fellow Brookes students. Of course, with a city like Oxford, there is always something new happening, so make sure you get out there and find that thing you’ll remember long after your time at Brookes.

Elections... The Union is led by a team of four full-time officers, and a team of portfolio officers, who are elected by the student body. The officer team are supported by a team of permanent staff. Helen Reid Vice President (Academic Experience)

Your full-time officers

4

Being an officer is a fantastic experience - you become a trustee of the charity, form part of the leadership team and become directors of the trading company. There aren’t many jobs that offer such a wealth of experience. Any student can run for election. You can either take a year out (a sabbatical) from your studies, or you can run in your graduating year. If you’re interested in finding out more about the elections process, visit brookesunion.org.uk/elections, or come and speak to an officer. If you don’t fancy running in the elections this time, don’t forget to vote for the person you’d like to represent you.

Liam Corbally Vice President (Welfare)

From here on in, the guide will be introduced by VP Societies Development, Elena. We all hope to meet you really soon. If there is anything that Brookes Union can do to help you settle in to Oxford, do get in touch with us. We’re here to help.

From,

There are loads of ways that you can get involved with the Union: you could get involved with a society, join the safety bus volunteer team or become a student representative. We also run a range of events called Brookes Union Presents throughout the year. Our Advice Service is there to help during your University journey.

INFORMATION ON THE DIFFERENT AREAS There are some distinct areas of Oxford. Throughout this guide we have listed the three main areas where students tend to go out. You’ll quickly find your own favourite haunts and regular shopping areas but while the city is new to you, why not let us show you around.

East Oxford

Centre of town

The most diverse part of the city, it has an abundance of cafés and restaurants serving food from around the world. If you’re looking for live music it’s a good place to explore, with a wide variety of pubs and bars. The area is at the cheaper end of the city and is popular with students who choose to rent.

At the heart of the city centre is Carfax Tower. It stands at the intersection of Queen Street, which leads on to the High Street, and Cornmarket Street, which becomes St Aldates. This is the busiest part of town and the majority of shops are along these four roads. Both the Carfax Tower and the University Church of St Mary are located in the centre of town, and feature towers that can be scaled for a unique view out over the city skyline. The city centre features the Covered Market, which has been in existence for over 200 years and offers a sensory tapestry of smells, colours, sounds and experiences, not to be matched anywhere else in the city. Many of Oxford University’s 38 colleges are also scattered across the city centre. Broad Street is home to one of the oldest, Balliol, and has the Sheldonian Theatre, designed by Sir Christopher Wren. You can find some of the most famous sights of Oxford on or around Broad Street, with the Bodleian Library behind the theatre and the Bridge of Sighs on New College Lane.

Starting at St Clements, and encompassing the Cowley and Iffley Road, East Oxford is packed with places to go out.

It’s also home to Headington, where the Gipsy Lane campus is. There are several small supermarkets, including The Co-operative and Sainsbury’s, along the London Road, as well as plenty of places to eat and drink.

Jericho

Slightly away from the city centre lies Jericho. A hub of cafés, restaurants, bars and pubs line Little Clarendon and Walton Street, and are tucked away in the back streets. There are lots of independent shops, from a beatnik bookstore (the Albion) to a retro clothes store (Uncle Sam’s). Behind Walton Street is Port Meadow, a good place to go if you want to escape the bustle of the city.

Definitely check out the Oxford colleges. It’s only around £1 for students and that includes a guide/leaflet. – Lily Jane

SITES TO SEE & THINGS TO DO Introduction from ELENA: Oxford is a great city - famous worldwide - but its beauty doesn’t only come from its buildings but also from the amazing stories behind them. One of the things that I like the most about Oxford is that there is always something to do! From all the touristy stuff to the nightlife, and of course the amazing societies and Union events that we have all year round. If you want to know more about what the city has to offer have a look through this booklet to see what our student favourites are.

Tourist Attractions 1 Christ Church www.chch.ox.ac.uk Famous as the setting for many scenes from the Harry Potter films, it is the most visited of the Oxford Colleges. Its grounds run along the river and it has a meadow with deer, making it a great location for a picnic. The college itself features a Picture Gallery, with an outstanding collection of Old Master paintings and drawings.

For Harry Potter fans, Christ Church College. – Zoe-Maria Osborn

5 The Covered Market Tucked away in the market are delicatessens, butchers, fishmongers, jewellers, cobblers and clothes shops. It has been trading for more than 200 years.

The Natural History Museum is renowned for its stunning neo-Gothic architecture. It holds more than 5 million specimens, including dodo and dinosaur skeletons from Oxfordshire. It is adjoined to the Pitt Rivers Museum, which displays archaeological and anthropological collections from around the world, including African masks and Inuit costumes from North America. Admission is free and it’s open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 4.30pm, and Monday from 12pm to 4.30pm. 7 Punting www.oxfordpunting.co.uk

Support the local traders in the covered market. All the butchers there have something or other on offer and it’s usually much less fatty/gristly than the ‘cheaper’ supermarket stuff. – Josh Wood

10

In the summer, Oxford’s rivers become packed with punters. You can also hire out small rowing boats and kayaks. For information on how to punt and where you can hire punts, visit: www.dailyinfo. co.uk/guide/punting.html 8 Port Meadow More than 400 acres of common land is right by the city centre. You can walk along the river to The

Perch and The Trout, both wonderful riverside pubs that have great pub gardens. 9 Sheldonian Theatre www.ox.ac.uk/subsite/ sheldonian_theatre/ sheldonian_theatre Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the theatre is a great concert hall, but is also worth visiting simply for its stunning architectural design. 10 Boswells www.boswells.co.uk Established in 1738, Boswells is believed to be the oldest family owned department store in the world, and is rumoured to have supplied Captain Cook with luggage for his expeditions to the Southern Hemisphere. Renowned in Oxford for selling almost everything a student could need , it’s definitely worth a visit for some ‘historic’ retail therapy.

If you’re in the city centre, visit Boswells. Great for Christmas shopping and a 20% discount for Brookes students! – Jonas Whyte

OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS

The Press

Oxford University Press (OUP) is a department of the University of Oxford and has been printing

books since 1478—just two years after William Caxton brought the first printing press to England. During a rich and varied history, OUP has expanded from its roots in fifteenth century religious commentaries to a global output today of more than six-thousand titles each year. Today, OUP is the largest University Press in the world, and publishes dictionaries, English language teaching materials, children’s books, journals, scholarly monographs, higher education textbooks, and schoolbooks. Publishing across a range of markets and in a variety of formats, the Press’s activity is

unified by one overarching mission statement: to further the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.

The OUP Bookshop

Since 1872 the Oxford University Press Bookshop has provided a unique showroom and retail presence on the iconic High Street in Oxford city centre. Now the longest-established bookseller in Oxford, The Bookshop has four floors exclusively dedicated to OUP’s publishing. The Bookshop stocks more than 45,000 titles,

with thousands more available from our UK and global warehouses, and through the Print on Demand programme which produces digitallyarchived reprints of thousands of books that would be otherwise unavailable. The Bookshop is no ordinary bookseller—it is a thriving and yet peaceful place to discover the hidden depths of one of the world’s most influential publishers.

WHERE TO GO SHOPPING Introduction from ELENA: In Oxford you can find all sorts of shops and there are so many that we could probably have a whole guide just for shopping. That’s why instead, we are giving you an idea of which areas of the city are good for which type of shops. Then it’s up to you to go and find out for yourself. However, look out for our money-saving tips to make sure that you don’t race through your student loan. TOP TIP: Don’t forget to ask about, and look out for, the student discounts and always carry your NUS Extra card with you! Trust me, you will be thankful for those extra couple of pounds you’ll be saving ;)

City Centre Shopping The City Centre has all of the high street shops that you could wish for. It also boasts two shopping centres; the Westgate Centre (westgateoxford.co.uk) and the Clarendon Centre (www.clarendoncentre. co.uk). There are some major bookshops in the centre, including Blackwell’s and Waterstone’s. Dotted in between the shops are all of the expected fast-food outlets, as well as plenty of cafés and pubs, so it’s easy to find refreshment and a break from the bustle. Set a short walk away from the core of shopping activity are areas such as Gloucester Green and The Castle Quarter, which offer their own unique

32

shopping experiences and opportunities to take a breather.

East Oxford Shopping Cowley Road has a very unique character and a diverse culture and the shops are reflective of this. From wholefood shops, Eastern and Continental food shops, to jewellers, bike shops and boutiques. The Truck Store is Oxford’s independent music hub, which often features impromptu, intimate acoustic sessions by artists playing at the nearby O2 Academy Oxford. Beyond the Cowley Road, in Cowley Centre, is a third shopping centre, Templars Square (www. templarssquare.com),

which hosts many of the shops you would expect in a shopping centre, such as Boots and Carphone Warehouse, alongside an independent greengrocer and Wilkinson. There is also a retail centre, the Templars Shopping Park (www. templarsshoppingpark.com), across the road, which is home to TK Maxx, Halfords, JD Sports, and more. Headington is a fairly functional shopping area, featuring mostly supermarkets and cafés. It has more than its fair share of charity shops and an increasing number of boutiques. Headington Homewares and A-Z Household Goods are both located in the centre of Headington and, between them, you can buy pretty much anything you might need for your house.

SHOPPING Tips from students Use Quidco for cashback deals, vouchercodes. co.uk for offers in store or online and inOxford. com for 50% off vouchers for many restaurants. Get coffee cards, boots/ superdrug cards and always ask if the shop offers a student discount. – Ditte Poulsen

Plan your meals and make shopping lists before you go – sounds boring but saves money. – Emily Melville

Wednesday market in Gloucester Green for cheap fruit and veg. – Emma Paterson

Your freezer space is your friend. If you’re a meat eater, all of the shops tend to have buy two for £X on larger packages of chicken and mince. Get some freezer bags and split the packages up into meal-size portions. (Also, if you like chicken and don’t mind dealing with bones, thighs tend to be cheaper and sold in larger packages.) Frozen vegetables are tasty, and are generally only a pound or two for a large bag that will last you for a while. – Ariana Morrow

Make the most of the freshers student lock ins! 20% off Topshop, River Island etc!!! – Maddie Roberts

Go to the supermarkets a couple of hours before they close as they always reduce a lot of stuff & you can get some really good deals. – Elizabeth Alice Clarkson

Don’t presume that just because it’s good quality it has to be expensive! Throw dinner parties with friends and split the bill per person. Get some nice meat and make it the star attraction but bulk it out with top quality veg, like the Italians do. It’s a brilliant way to socialise cheaply as well! – Josh Wood

not JUST FOR FIRST YEARS!

If you would like to stay in a Hall of Residence as 2nd or 3rd year student, the Accommodation Bureau can help you. You can book a room from February onwards (though rooms go quickly so don’t leave it too late to book), details of available halls, prices and contract lengths will be on our website www.brookes.ac.uk/ halls4all.

48

Living in halls is ideal after your first year. You get to benefit from all of the convenience of being in a hall, you have the option to live with your friends, you will be separate from first year students, you can take part in hall social events, meet new friends and you still get your BROOKESbus pass. You also don’t need any guarantors, and there’s no arguments about paying bills. There’s no need to sign up to a costly private rental contract, and you don’t need to be pressured into deciding where you want to live, and who you want to live with until after the Christmas

break, once you’ve had time to settle in to university life. Pop into the Accommodation Bureau, or look on our website in February to see where you can live next year. We also have shared housing available for groups and individuals if that is what you prefer (www.brookes. ac.uk/students/ accommodation/ shared-housingvacancies/).

brookesunion.org.uk | fb.com/BrookesUnion | @BrookesUnion

Do I need insurance in my first year? Good news; you may already have basic cover in place in your halls of residence arranged by your accommodation provider. This student room insurance focuses on covering some of the items in your room for theft, fire and flood risk. Laptops, tablets, phones and any other gadgets are not covered outside of your room under this cover. Most students have an average of three gadgets and with a total value of nearly £3,000, you may wish to consider taking out additional cover, to protect these valuable companions as they travel with you throughout your first year.

tablet or laptop is an essential tool for coursework. What would you do without them? You can insure just one gadget or more with our new policy, which evolves with you throughout university to make sure your changing needs are met during term time, when you go back home to visit friends and family, holidays abroad and even when you graduate. To find out more, visit: www.endsleigh.co.uk/gadget

We all rely on gadgets so much that losing or damaging them can be stressful. Your phone is a vital link with friends and family and your brookesunion.org.uk | fb.com/BrookesUnion | @BrookesUnion
