Currently I am a transfer illustration student at OCADU. Previously I was studying at the School of the Art Insitute of Chicago in fashion and painting and drawing. Having both a background in fine art and design, I hope to maintain a good balance between the two fields, and make Cadmium beneficial to students from both faculties.

Our first issue of the 2010-2011 school year will kick off with a mini issue sampling student work from the summer, as well as ongoing upcoming events happening in the school and art community. Check out our new style section, as well as “Interview with an OCADU alumni,” this issue featuring an interview with Dave Kang, a graduate of OCADU’s illustration pragram in 2006. OCAD Problem? Come see the Ombuds…
The Ontario College of Art and Design Student Union have a Part Time In-House Lawyer. The lawyer will provide legal advice and assistance to both the Student Union and to our individual members. If you are an OCAD student, you are eligible to meet with the lawyer to discuss any personal legal issue, ranging from family law matters through landlord and tenant, employment or debt problems to criminal charges, as well as accident claims, immigration applications and other dealings with the government, and corporate, commercial or intellectual property issues.
OCAD Open Mic and Festivus Potluck
The Student Union Project Grant applications for OCAD students are now available.
The Office of the Ombuds is a safe place to talk over problems or conflicts you are having at OCAD. If you feel you have been treated unfairly and are not sure what to do, or if you need information or advice about an OCAD policy or procedure, the Ombuds can listen to your concerns and assist you in finding resolutions. All meetings held in the Office are dealt with in the strictest confidence unless the student involved gives permission for her or his name to be released. The Ombuds is an impartial advocate for fairness and works as an independent arm of the University. The current Ombuds is Jody Nyasha Warner. Students are responsible for being aware of relevant policies, procedures and deadlines at OCAD. This information can be found on the OCAD website in the Student section. Every year the Office of the Ombuds prepares an Annual Report for the OCAD community to share information about issues of fair process on campus. The 2008/2009 Annual Report is titled Planting Seeds, Growing Change.

Interview with an ocadu alumni By: Michelle Lin
For the first issue of Cadmium for the 2010-2011 school year, I had the opportunity to interview Dave Kang, an Illustration major, who received his Bachleor of Design in 2006. Since then, he has gone on to becoming a successful illustrator in both Canada, and abroad. Who was your most memorable teacher at OCAD? Wow, this one is tough. At the moment I remember Bob Berger the most. What was your favourite class? In 2nd year, second semester, there was an illustration class. I don’t remember the exact name of it but it was great because it was very technical. What is something OCAD has taught you that has helped you in your artistic career? That idea is only real if you can make it happen. Anybody can talk. When you are an artist, you take pride in your paintings talking ability not your mouth.

How did you start out your career after graduation? I always wanted to be a concept artist for games and films. Most of the instructors knew that by the end of my second year. I did my thesis on concept art and I was lucky enough to be prepared when an opportunity knocked on my door. What would you say is your biggest artistic achievement to date? Becoming a senior concept artist on a multi-million dollar game project in one year after being hired. What are you doing presently? I'm a full time freelancer, happily busy working on diverse projects in States and Canada. What are your plans for the future? I'm looking forward to establish an outsourcing art house by the end of 2012. What is the most important thing you think all illustration students should know? Be real. If you feel like your focus on art is your personal feelings and flavors then you become a fine artist. Illustrators are self driven slaves. It is your job to get the job done in one way or another. It's not about how much talent you have. It's about how you use your talent. Any last words? If you find yourself sketching fun things when you are stressed out from painting, you are in a good place to start your journey. Hey, have fun!

The Social Network: A Movie Review By: Mike Harris
What was to be my first ever solo movie night was conveniently disrupted by a friend keen to see the same film with just enough time permitting before screening to meet up. Unfortunately, the contact was not made through social media.

Having heard such rave reviews about this film, it was only a matter of time before I made it to theaters to see what all the hype was about - by myself or not.
Prof talking about grades “I dont like giving 69” In the girls washroom... “I hate tucking my shirt into my pants. It takes up like two more minutes of my time.” “It’s part of my job description to drink with clients.” - Prof in class Group of elementary students (maybe grade 2 or 3?) on a field trip passing by OCAD.... kid #1 to kid #2 - “you know, those sticks are just there for now to hold it up until they’re done building it, they can’t hold it up forever Prof: “Do you know why we make you guys do a Thesis? Student: “Because you hate us?” Prof says “you have to rub it really good, to get all the stuff out” *Someone’s phone rings with a Power Rangers ringtone* Girl: “Did you hear that??? Power Rangers!” Boy: “What’s a Power Ranger? All I know is Voltron.” Prof during critique: “This is a school for art and design, and they have trash cans that are THIS ugly?! It just blows my mind”. Prof then proceeds to move the garbage bin outside the classroom. prof on remembering tenebrism: ‘...I dont know why I automatically think of vibrations’ (awkward silence, awkward laugh)

Fuck you I have a job! By Merrill Liu
That was a commonly heard phrase in my home for the summer of 2k10 (my brother convinced me this sounded much cooler than the full two thousand and ten), I was 18 and had my first job. I worked as an art assistant doing manual labour at a firm for a few weeks of the summer and earned $12 an hour. My parents were not always around. Me being the oldest, I was the third parent, as my two younger siblings grew older we began parenting each other. My sister and I were always in constant battle shaming each other’s frivolous purchases. But this summer my weapon of words have been “Fuck you I have a job! I’ll just make more tomorrow!” My mother was convinced having a job would teach me the value of money. Well it sort of did…unfortunately if anything it made me more annoying in my shamings “$36 for a top? That’s like 3 hours of work! Do you have 3 hours of work?! Oh wait, I make like $96 a day, I could totally afford that! BAM!” Here’s to turning a rite of adulthood into immaturity.
Regardless of how arguably accurate an account the script may be, it was extremely well written (credit Aaron Sorkin) and directed with a cast so befitting of the characters they are supposed to enact, one feels as though this was a docudrama of sorts. The brains behind the social media site themselves have labelled the sequences of events highlighted in the film as a dramatization of history. This is not surprising considering the portrayal of the various Facebook cofounders. What resonated most to me about this film was the underlying story of a forward-thinking, dare-I-say genius, with a monumental idea which would revolutionize the way we communicate and interact forever. The Social Network exceeded all expectations I had prior to watching, and is deserving of all critical acclaim its received. This is the best movie I’ve seen in a long time, and hands down the most compelling film of the year so far.
