We describe OCAD University as the university of the imagination, for imagination is the catalyst that can change the world in effective ways, enabling you to create works of art that transform hearts and minds; become leaders in design thinking and practice; invent technologies; and drive entrepreneurship; be willing to take calculated risks; and serve as a resource to your communities. You have a dynamic path before you. OCAD University represents the largest, the most significant and the most comprehensive art and design programs in Canada. Your learning will be rooted in studio experience, in making, and in learning the processes of art and design, coupled with a rigorous engagement with history, an exposure to contemporary thought, strategic thinking and to the science and business logic behind art and design. OCAD University faculty is deeply committed to helping you to achieve a standard of excellence, so please engage with your learning with all your might. We are a small university - you will find a sense of camaraderie and community here as well as a dedicated and passionate staff, terrific student services and a creative OCAD Student Union. Please be an active community member. OCAD University is situated in the midst of the art, design and media communities of downtown Toronto, right next to the Art Gallery of Ontario, where you are welcomed as OCAD U students. I urge you to explore the culture that bubbles around you, and feel free to visit me during my regular office hours. Dr. Sara Diamond, OCAD University President

FOOD SHARE PROGRAM or Good Food Box (GFB) is offered between September - May. The GFB runs like a large buying club. You pay $13 - $34 for a box of mixed produce. Contents change with each delivery as Food Share’s crops grow seasonally. GFB delivers the boxes to our office and our coordinator ensures that you, the customer, pick up your box the day of delivery. GBF chooses Ontario-grown products whenever possible because we care about where and how our food is produced. GFB supports local farmers, which is significantly less destructive to our environment when we consider the ecological footprint and costs associated with food importation. In this program, customers pay the cost of the food itself, while distribution overheads are subsidized.

HOW TO ORDER We will have a table set up in the lobby every tuesday between 10-4. Sales are made in cash when you place your order. Pick ups are in the Studnet Union office, 12-4, on the following thursday from placing your order. www.ocadsu.org/calendar Good Food Box $18 Family-sized selection of affordable fresh fruit and vegetables, with an emphasis on seasonal produce. Small Food Box $13 A smaller version of the GFB. Wellness Box $13 A week’s worth of fruits and vegetables washed and cut-up for you.

Organic Box $34 Certified organic, generally harvested in Ontario. The higher price is for the production costs that come from producing food organically. Small Organic Box $24 The same great tasting certified organic produce, in a smaller quantity. Fruit Box $13 Just fresh fruit, the best in season.

Cadmium is the University paper, which offers OCAD U students an opportunity to have their voices heard and their creativity displayed to the community. It is the platform to confront and raise awareness of issues, new happenings and opportunities, as well as a method to connect and share your thoughts about student life. This year we are trying a new format for the paper, moving from six issues a year to one zine a month. Editing Cadmium could be the perfect job for you or a small group of friends! Becoming Cadmium’s editor in chief for the month means you will be responsible for the creation and presentation of the zine’s content. Spill your passion. Get creative! Tell the world what you want to say. Each issue will be made from one double sided 11x17 black and white photocopy, zine style! Each edition includes at least one article, one comic/joke, one recipe, one creative/visual submission and an additive to the Cadmium Continuing Story; each month’s edition will have a new ‘chapter’ written by the month’s editor. Issues will be released on the first of the month. check out our past issues at ocadsu.org/cadmium. If you would like to get involved or become one of the monthly editors, get in touch with us at cadmium@ocadsu.org

GRANTS The SU offers money to fund your projects! Every fall the Student Union requests grant proposals from OCAD U Students. Our Grant Committee reviews all submissions and decides how to allocate funding. In the past, we have funded group exhibitions, student publications and student group activities. Mid autumn we provide a workshop for students to learn effective grant writing techniques from external artists and curators. Applying for grants is a critical process to familiarize yourself with before graduating from OCAD U.

GRANT PERIOD Grant applications open November annually, with the Grant deadline in December. January grant recipients are notified and have until the start of summer to successfully use their grant. If applicants do not meet the grant conditions they will be requested to return all funding. No late applicants are considered. The decision of the Grants Committee is final. The SU offers a workshop in November that has detailed training on “How to Write a Grant. We strongly recommend all interested applicants attend this workshop.

FIRST GENERATION PROGRAMS (FG) is designed to address the needs of students whose parents/guardians have not attended university or college. Transition programs introduce students to the OCAD U learning environment, and through supplemental instruction during the year, we support students enrolled in specific academic courses that pose a high degree of difficulty. Simultaneously, involvement with the Student Mentor Program sees upper-year FG students guide new FG students through their first year. We additionally offer longer-term support to individual FG students who are vulnerable or at-risk, a process which begins in our Academic Success Sessions. Finally, a range of events geared towards developing alternative learning sites empowering students and self-directed learners fosters a culture of learning among the FG student population at OCAD University. OCAD U Student/Alumni Job Board has been operational since Winter 2006. It is a highly successful bridge between OCAD U students, alumni, and the external community. Career Services offers this and several other services to enhance the educational experience of our students. Though employers would not think to ask an electrician or carpenter to work for nothing, they often take for granted that artists and designers will do just about anything - including building complete web sites or branding products - solely for the purposes of ‘enhancing their portfolios’. We all need to eat and pay for housing. Artists and designers are highly skilled, and valued contributors to healthy economies and we want you to treat yourselves with the respect that you and your work deserves. No unpaid positions will be found on the job board - only those which will fill your pockets and enhance your life will be found there. http://academic.OCAD U.ca/jobboard/

Remember to take care of yourself (food/sleep). Working in the studio all day can be exhausting. No one wants to loose a hand, If you need to take a little nap, there’s a couch in the SU office.

Tips Eat well. Eating well balanced meals consisting of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean meats/ alternatives will give your body AND mind the fuel you need to last throughout the day. Limit foods and beverages high in calories, fat, sugar or salt, and make water your thirst quencher. Get Active. Virtually any form of exercise and physical activity can act as a stress reliever in addition to being great for your overall health. Canada’s Physical Activity Guide recommends 30-60 minutes of moderate exercise everyday for adults. Meditate. Meditation instills a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits both your emotional well-being and your overall health. Yoga is a great exercise that combines both the mind and body to help you relax and manage stress and anxiety.

Rest. Sleep is the time when your brain/body recharge. Getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night will help improve the quality of your waking hours. The quality and quantity of sleep you get affects your mood, energy level, concentration and overall functioning. create. Journal/Get Musical/ Artistic Participate in activities that you enjoy doing. These help provide a distraction from the stresses of everyday life. Connect/Seek Counsel. When you’re stressed and irritable, your instinct may be to wrap yourself in a cocoon. Instead, reach out to family and friends and make social connections. Therapy or talking to a professional may be a good idea if stress leaves you feeling overwhelmed or trapped, if you worry excessively, or if you have trouble carrying out daily routines or meeting responsibilities at work, home or school.

Waste Disposal Improving on our sustainable practices on campus, Campus Services & Security and IT Services have established the Recycling Zone (located near room 240 at 100 McCaul). In this one convenient location you will be able to responsibly dispose of electronics as well as printer cartridges, cell phones, and common household batteries throughout the year. Leaving garbage in the hallways is not only irresponsible but also poses a safety concern. If you have large items that cannot fit in these designated containers please email work.order.requests@ocadu.ca to ensure your item will be properly disposed in a timely fashion. Recyclable materials paper, plastic bottles, metal cans and Styrofoam, can be co-mingled. This not only increases the volume of materials recycled but also eliminates the possibility that recyclable material will not be rejected by OCAD University’s contracted waste disposal company. Hazardous Waste including batteries, are removed from our campus on a regular basis. Please note that only hazardous waste generated by OCAD University studios are accepted. To schedule a pickup of these items, please email work.order.request@ocadu.ca If you have any comments, questions or concerns regarding sustainable practices on our campus please contact either Minesh Mandoda x212 or Lancelot Straun x617. Thanks for considering our campus environment and helping to promote sustainability at the University.
